About the 80s

7 Best Tom Cruise Movies of the 80s

Born in Syracuse, NY on July 3, 1962, Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most popular actors and producers, receiving numerous accolades for his work, including three Golden Globe Award and three nominations for Academy Awards.

He has a net worth of $570 million as of 2020 and is one of the highest paid actors in the world. He’s also one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time, with films grossing over $4 billion in North America and over $10.1 billion around the world.

Tom Cruise in the Early 80s

Tom Cruise’s early career started when moving to New York City with his mother and step father to pursue an acting career. He first found a job as a busboy and later went to Los Angeles to try out for television roles, where he landed a contract with CAA and started acting in films. His first film was Endless Love (1981) where he appeared in a bit part, followed by a major supporting role as Billy in Taps .

In 1983, he was made part of the ensemble cast of The Outsiders before starring in All the Right Moves and Risky Business which was described as “A Generation X classic, and a career-maker for Tom Cruise.” It was then in 1986 where he landed the major role of playing Maverick in Top Gun, where his career really took off.

Top Tom Cruise Films of the 80s

1. top gun (1986).

Directed by Tony Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer in association with Paramount Pictures, Tom Cruise played Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchel, a young naval pilot working off the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, along with his best friend and Radar Intercept Officer, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). Together, they are given the opportunity to train at the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, CA.

After being released, Top Gun first had mixed reviews from critics, but most loved the action scenes, effects, aerial stunts and acting performances from Cruise and Kelly McGillis (Charlotte). Despite its mixed reviews, the film had grossed $356 million in the US with a budget of just $15 million. It maintained its popularity throughout the 80s and also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin.

Fun fact: a sequel, Top Gun: Maverick will be released on July 2, 2021, after being postponed twice due to COVID-19.

2. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

Directed by Oliver Stone and based on an eponymous 1976 autobiography by Ron Kovic, Born on the Fourth of July is a biographical war drama film about the life of Kovic (Cruise) over a 20-year period. The story covers his childhood, military service and paralysis during the Vietnam War and then his transition to anti-war activism.

After the film’s release, it was praised by critics for its story, including Tom Cruise’s acting and Stone’s direction. While they initially had a $14 million budget, it ended up costing $17.8 million after reshoots when Al Pacino (who would have played Kovic) and producer Bregman left.

Despite going over budget, the movie was largely successful at the box office as it grossed over $161 million worldwide, making it the tenth highest-grossing film of 1989. The film also won four Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

3. Rain Man (1988)

Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass, Rain Man is about an abrasive, selfish young wheeler-dealer named Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) who discovers his estranged father died and left his multi-million dollar home to his other son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Raymond is an autistic savant of whom Charlie didn’t even know. The only items left for Charlie were his father’s beloved vintage car and rosebushes. Valeria Golino also stars alongside Tom Cruise as Charlie’s girlfriend Susanna.

Rain Man was the highest grossing film in 1988, winning four Oscars at the 61st Academy Awards in March 1989, including Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading role for Hoffman, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. The film crew had also received an additional four nominations. The movie also won the Golden Bear at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival.

4. Risky Business (1983)

Written and directed by Paul Brickman and starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay, Risky Business is about a once young, smart, innocent boy, Joel (Cruise) who lives with his wealthy parents in Chicago’s North Shore of Glencoe.

His future means everything to him, but his friend, Miles, steps in and calls a prostitute on his behalf. Turns out, she happened to be a trans woman, who Joel paid for her to leave. But before she did, she gave Joel the number of another prostitute, Lana, who Joel also called and invited over.

She was a gorgeous young blonde who fooled around with him the rest of the night and asked him for $300 the following morning for her services. He didn’t have the money on hand, so he went to the bank, leaving the prostitute in his home, where she stole his mother’s expensive Steuben glass egg.

The film had a great presentation for themes including loss of innocence, coming of age, capitalism and materialism, grossing over $63 million with just a $6.2 million budget.

5. The Color of Money (1986)

Directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Richard Price in association with Touchstone Pictures, The Color of Money is a drama film based on the 1984 novel by Walter Tevis. The movie features the continued story of a pool hustler and stake horse Edward “Fast Eddie” Felson, who decides to introduce a student to his game of scamming others in pool halls.

He meets talented, green Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise) and proposes a partnership. When Fast Eddie leads Vince through various pool halls and teaches him the tricks of scamming, he eventually grows frustrated with Vincent’s showboat antics which leads to a major argument and fallout between the two. But Eddie soon takes up playing again and takes on Vincent as an opponent.

The film won an Academy Awards for Best Actor, National Board of review Awards for Top Ten Films and National Board of Review Awards for Best Actor. It also grossed $52.3 million with a budget of $13.8 million.

6. All the Right Moves (1983)

Directed by Michael Chapman, All the Right Moves is a sports drama about Stefan Djordjevic (Tom Cruise), who is the star player of his high school football team who’s hoping his talents will earn him a scholarship and move him out of his small hometown of Ampipe, PA. But a heated argument between him and his coach (Craig T. Nelson) gets him booted from the football team, and he’s blacklisted from college recruiters. So Stefan must fight for the chance to live out his dream and escape from a dead-end future.

While the film wasn’t nominated nor won any awards, it did gross over $17 million at the box office with a budget of $5.6 million.

7. Legend (1985)

Directed by Ridley Scott, Legend is an epic dark fantasy adventure story , revolving around Jack, a pure being who must stop the Lord of Darkness, who plans to cover the world in darkness forever. Most describe this film as a dark fairy tale and return to more original and even disturbing fables originating from the ancient times oral tradition.

This movie was not a commercial success when it was first released, but it did win the British Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography in 1985 for cinematographer Alex Thomson. It was also nominated for a number of other awards, including:

  • Oscar for Best Makeup
  • Academy of Science Fiction
  • Fantasy & Horror Films Saturn Award for Best Makeup
  • BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup Artist
  • Best Special Visual Effects
  • DVD Exclusive awards
  • Young Artist Awards

But despite all the nominations, the film only grossed $23.5 million with a $24.5 million budget.

Tom Cruise’s Films with Minor Roles

1. the outsiders (1983).

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Outsiders is based on the 1967 novel by S. E. Hinton, where Jo Ellen Misakian and her students inspired Coppola to make the film at Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno, CA. It had various up-and-coming stars, including C. Thomas Howell (who won a Young Artist Award), Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swazy, Ralph Maccio, and Diane Lane. The film also inspired the Brat Pack genre of the 80s, where a rivalry between two gangs, the poor Greasers and rich Socs heats up when one gang member kills a member of the other. While Cruise didn’t have a strong role, it helped him to land the starring role as Joel in Risky Business.

The movie received mostly positive reviews from movie critics, mostly for the acting performances, specifically Macchio being singled out for praise. The movie grossed $33.7 million at the box office with only a $10 million budget.

2. Taps (1981)

Directed by Harold Becker, Taps is a 1981 drama starring George C. Scott and Timothy Hutton about a group of military school students who decide to take over their school and save it from closing. While it was Sean Penn’s first film role and Cruise’s second, Cruise only had a supporting role, playing David Shawn.

But it was this film, along with another film, Endless Love that gave him the opportunity to star as Joel in Risky Business, where he would have his big break.

With a budget of only $14 million, the movie grossed almost $36 million at the box office.

3. Endless Love (1981)

Endless Love is another 80s romance drama directed by Franco Zeffirelli, starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. Tom Cruise had a minor role as Billy. The movie was also based on the 1979 novel, written by Scott Spencer.

The story is about a love-obsessed couple where a 15-year-old girl is thwarted by her parents’ disapproval of her relationship. So she burns down her family’s home and is committed to a psychiatric hospital.

While the movie was unfavorably compared to the book, which featured the dangers of obsessive love as well as receiving poor reviews, its theme song became a #1 hit on Billboard Hot 100. The song also received an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nomination for “Best Original Song” in addition to five Grammy Award nominations.

Tom Cruise’s Less Successful Films

1. cocktail (1988).

Directed by Donaldson and written by Heywood Gould, this 80s rom com was based on Gould’s novel. The Cocktail is about a young business student living in NYC, Brian Flanagan (Cruise) whose dream is to go into marketing. But he learns how to bartend to pay for college and make ends meet, where he meets his veteran boss, Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown). Working together, they show off special tricks and charisma while bringing in large tips and crowds – until they have a falling out. Flanagan ended up moving to Jamaica to raise money to open his own bar, where he fell in love with the beautiful artist Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue).

Despite its success in the box office, grossing over $171.5 million, the film had horrible reviews from critics. One had said, “There are no surprises in Cocktail, a shallow, dramatically inert romance that squanders Tom Cruise’s talents in what amounts to a naive barkeep’s banal fantasy.”

Losin It

2. Losin’ It (1983)

This American-Canadian film was directed by Chris Hanson and involves four teenagers trying to lose their virginity. Losin’ It takes place in 1950s Los Angeles where the group is on their way to Tijuana, Mexico. Dave, Spider and Woody (Cruise) are there to lose their virginity while Wendell came to buy fireworks. They pick up a young woman named Kathy, who tags along because she wants a quick divorce from her husband. But they quickly find themselves in a series of adventures and troubles south of the border.

This film received a ton of negative reviews from critics and has a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes according to 10 reviews.

In an era where most actors can no longer sell movies by their name alone, only a few Hollywood personas have enough charisma and on-screen presence to draw in an audience by themselves. Though there's still a handful, none have stood the test of time like Tom Cruise . Of course, stars don't happen overnight. There is a certain formula to becoming a Hollywood Icon. Cruise spent most of the 80s perfecting it; going from small thankless roles in Endless Love to supporting roles in quality films like The Outsiders and finally leading hit films like Top Gun .

While it's easy to write him off as another pretty-faced actor, Cruise is far more calculated than some notice. In the 80s he gained audience trust, making a point of being in crowd-pleasing four-quadrant films while still working with respected directors like Martin Scorsese , Oliver Stone , and Francis Ford Coppola . This cemented Cruise as a serious Thespian and box office draw. By the end of the 80s, there were no longer merely movies with Tom Cruise but Tom Cruise movies. Audiences knew any movie starring Mr. Top Gun himself would be good whether that was true or not. That's the true testament to Cruise's '80s legacy.

12 'Losing It' (1982)

Directed by curtis hanson.

Cruise's reluctant first leading role as a teen who goes to Tiawana with his friends to lose his virginity was so lackluster even he didn't want to star in it, only agreeing to participate after being convinced by his agent.

This underwhelming movie fails to deliver on the Porkies -like raunch or the outrageous comedy delivered in its first fifteen minutes. That said, it does highlight Cruise and Cheers alumni Shelly Long's immense talent with their surprising ability to emote depth and have fun chemistry, even in a movie as bare as this.

WATCH ON APPLE TV

11 'Cocktails' (1988)

Directed by: roger donaldson.

In what's essentially Top Gun with a bartender, a selfish hot-shot bartender changes after being humbled by life. While not remembered fondly these days, this hit was the eighth highest-grossing film of 1988 and helped introduce Middle America to the rise in trendy bar culture.

As strange as it sounds, some films are entertaining purely for their nostalgic nature. Cocktail features lots of 80s hits, big hair, greed, and cheesy dialogue that Cruise and the rest of the cast committed to no matter how mellow dramatic making this a fun time capsule. While fans may have fun laughing at this film, there are exciting moments between Brian and his frienemy Doug where fans can see the smart and edgy drama it was aiming to be.

Cocktail (1988)

10 'Legend' (1982)

Directed by ridley scott.

Ridley Scott's dream-like fantasy about a vagabond who attempts to rescue a princess was a box office failure and one of Cruises' rare badly reviewed performances. However, it's recently been lauded for Ridly's breathtaking cinematography with many confused about how something filmed in a studio in the 80s can look so good.

While having the campiness of a 80s kids' movie, Legend did what most fantasy films of the day would not: take fantasy seriously. There are a lot of subtexts about the duality of people; nightmarishly creepy creatures including Tim Curry as Satan, and an uncharistically imperfect fair maiden. The set design and costuming are also taken seriously, feeling more like Lord of the Rings than the typical 80s childs-fair. This has led some to call Legend an imperfect masterpiece.

9 'Endless Love' (1981)

Directed by: franco zeffirelli.

Tom Cruises' first feature , about a teen girl whose parents forced her to break up with her boyfriend, was controversial because it depicted real teens having sex as well as the director twisting a teenage Brook Shields toe during a sex scene to get the reaction he wanted.

This movie starts like a sweet teen romance , but the tone dramatically shifts as the mother gains a crush on her daughter's boyfriend and these teen's unceremonious split causes him to become obsessed. What's interesting is the film views this as youthful love instead of disturbing like the novel and critics of the time. This makes this film and its protagonist unintentionally creepy and fascinating.

Endless Love

8 'all the right moves' (1983), directed by michael chapman.

Tom Cruise's first leading dramatic role may have come and gone, but fans cite this gem as being the first sign that Cruise had bigger aspirations than being another Hollywood pretty boy. It also shows how Cruise would be instrumental behind the scenes of his films, with him convincing the director to remove one of the nude scenes after Lea Thompson threatened to quit.

This hidden gem looks at the grim outlook of teens from small mining towns in the 80s. The setting and characters suck the audience into this dreary small town, so audiences can feel their angst or fear about escaping. Cruise gives a heartbreaking performance as an aspiring football player who desires more from life than working in the coal mine. While the movie is not perfect, Cruise's acting prowess and the movie's surprisingly realistic look at small town life make this film a diamond in the ruff.

RENT ON APPLE TV

7 'The Outsiders'

Directed by francis ford coppola.

Believe it or not, this cult hit would never exist without a school librarian writing Francis Ford Coppola with a signed petition by the children in her school asking him to make a movie out of the classic novel. Coppola's film adaptation, about a gang of greasers, also stars up-and-comers like Cruise, Matt Dillon , Emilio Estevez , and Diane Lane , with many considering it the first Brat-Pack film.

The Outsiders could have been and probably should have been a standard teen drama. However, in typical Coppola fashion, he tries to make an art film with odd pacing, interesting camera shots, and quiet, reflective moments. To his credit, this makes the movie stand out all these years later and brings depth to these characters and the film.

The Outsiders

6 'the color of money', directed by martin scorsese.

It's Ironic, this movie is about a pool hustler going back to pick up what he left behind in life since acting legend Paul Newman developed this sequel, even picking Cruise and Martin Scorsese so he could play a character he left behind and finally nab that elusive Best Actor Oscar.

Similar to The Hustler before it the layered and complicated characters are what make this film so interesting. Everyone is morally gray as Scorsese slowly reveals what motivates and drives these personalities. This leads to an interesting power shift between the exploitive Eddie and the naive Vincent, who goes from being hustled to the hustler.

The Color of Money

5 'taps' (1981), directed by harold becker.

Apparently, Tom Cruises' onscreen intensity is nothing new with him showing it in spades as a crazed machine gun-wielding cadet who helps his classmates take over their military school.

It's safe to say Taps makes Lord Of The Flies look like child's play. The cast may be younger, but they have an intense presence and delivery of actors twice their age as their characters are forced to grow up overnight. The film has children wielding machine guns and grenades like water guns, warning of the dangers of military schools preparing kids for war over making good decisions.

WATCH ON HULU

4 'Top Gun' (1987)

Directed by tony scott.

If Risky Business put Cruise on the map, then this film about an arrogant pilot in a prestigious naval academy made him a full-blown star. His maverick is so admirably arrogant that 40 years later, fans would rush to theaters to see him back on the big screen in Top Gun Maverick resuscitating a sluggish post-pandemic box office.

This quintessential 80s action flick took Cruise to new heights with its crowd-pleasing nature. From real-life plane sequences for action junkies to comedy, even Romance, this film has something for everyone, making it hard for anyone to feel left out. While Valkilmers hesitancy to make the film because of its silly dialogue is understandable, Top Gun wouldn't be the same without it. More importantly, it has Cruise being the magnetic action star fans would come to love.

3 'Born On The Fourth Of July' (1989)

Directed by oliver stone.

Despite Cruise starring mostly in action flicks these days, he was once known for searching for challenging roles to prove himself, like in this drama film about a disillusioned Vietnam War vet. Ironically, Oliver Stone originally could not see the clean-cut Top Gun playing a gritty dramatic role. However, the idea of seeing America's golden-boy morph into a wild-shelved veteran helping drive the point of the movie home convinced him otherwise.

Cruise proves he's more than just a pretty face and stunts in his transformative and career-changing performance from Suburban Boy next door to an angry handicapped war veteran. While most films focus on the insanity of the Vietnam War, this film focuses on its aftermath and how many veterans felt lost and unappreciated. While in most hero journeys, the protagonist finds himself, by the end of the movie, neither the viewer nor the hero recognizes who he is, leaving the audience shaken.

Born on the Fourth of July

WATCH ON NETFLIX

2 'Risky Business' (1983)

Directed by: paul brickman.

Every Hollywood icon has that first film and performance that puts them on the map. For Cruise, it was this teen comedy about a high school virgin who starts a brothel while his parents are away. Believe it or not, Cruise's stellar performance helped this movie become the tenth-highest-grossing film of 1983 stateside.

It's easy to see why this film turned Cruise into a star , with his character being the avatar for what every teenage boy wishes he could do when his parents are away. Relatable scenes like a school-weary Joel dancing in the house alone in his underwear endeared him to fans because of how relatable it was. However, this is no average teen flick. It aims to be high art. The director has several unconventional story beats and stylistic choices that make everything feel surreal and meaningful, elevating it far above the other raunchy 80s teen comedies.

Risky Business

1 rain man (1988), directed by barry levinson.

Most films can't make a scene of two men silently on an escalator a classic scene in cinema. However, this drama about a selfish businessman reuniting with his older brother he didn't know existed is just that immersive.

If one person can play lovable and arrogant , it's Cruise. He turns a movie about a selfish man kidnapping, mistreating, and exploiting his brother into hilarious and heartwarming. While Dustin Hoffman gives a career-high performance as an autistic shut-in, it's Cruise's self-absorbed and money-hungry character, Charlie, learning to care for someone else that goes through the most growth in one of his more underrated performances.

Tom Cruise Through the Years: His Megahit Movies, Headline-Making Marriages and More

Tom Cruise timeline

Bonafide movie star! Tom Cruise has defined pop culture for decades through his movies and marriages, so  Us Weekly  is taking a look back at the film icon’s career, personal life and more.

The actor was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in New York in July 1962. After becoming interested in acting as a child, he landed his first onscreen role in 1981’s  Endless Love .

Cruise went on to star in countless blockbusters and critically-acclaimed films, leading several franchises and earning more than one Academy Award nomination. Some of his notable work includes  Mission: Impossible ,  Top Gun ,  Risky Business  and  Jerry Maguire .

The  Rain Man  star also became known for doing his own stunts in his action movies. “He’s too old for this stuff ,”  Jack Reacher  author Lee Child told  The Times  in November 2019. “He’s 57. He needs to move on, transition to being a character actor. He could get another 20 years out of it. He is talented. He’s a terrific guy, very considerate, good fun.”

While Cruise carried on with his career as planned, he had less success in his personal life. He was married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001 and Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012.

The  Cocktail  star and Kidman adopted two children together : daughter Isabella and son Connor. “I’m very private about that,” the actress told Australia’s  Who  magazine in November 2018. “I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

The Oscar winner added at the time: “They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here. I think that’s so important because if that is taken away from a child, to sever that in any child, in any relationship, in any family — I believe it’s wrong. So that’s our job as a parent, to always offer unconditional love.”

Meanwhile, Cruise and Holmes welcomed a daughter in April 2006.

He later defended his rant in May 2021. “I said what I said,” he told Empire magazine, adding that he was only addressing “select people” who were violating safety measures. “There was a lot at stake at that point.”

The following month, the movie halted filming after at least one member of the production team tested positive for coronavirus.

  • Born July 3 , 1962 · Syracuse, New York, USA
  • Birth name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV
  • Height 5′ 7″ (1.70 m)
  • In 1976, if you had told fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student Thomas Cruise Mapother IV that one day in the not too distant future he would be Tom Cruise, one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, he would have probably grinned and told you that his ambition was to join the priesthood. Nonetheless, this sensitive, deeply religious youngster who was born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York, was destined to become one of the highest paid and most sought after actors in screen history. Tom is the only son (among four children) of nomadic parents, Mary Lee (Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, and he has German, Irish, and English ancestry. Young Tom spent his boyhood always on the move, and by the time he was 14 he had attended 15 different schools in the U.S. and Canada. He finally settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey with his mother and her new husband. While in high school, Tom wanted to become a priest but pretty soon he developed an interest in acting and abandoned his plans of becoming a priest, dropped out of school, and at age 18 headed for New York and a possible acting career. The next 15 years of his life are the stuff of legends. He made his film debut with a small part in Endless Love (1981) and from the outset exhibited an undeniable box office appeal to both male and female audiences. With handsome movie star looks and a charismatic smile, within 5 years Tom Cruise was starring in some of the top-grossing films of the 1980s including Top Gun (1986) ; The Color of Money (1986) , Rain Man (1988) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) . By the 1990s he was one of the highest-paid actors in the world earning an average 15 million dollars a picture in such blockbuster hits as Interview with the Vampire (1994) , Mission: Impossible (1996) and Jerry Maguire (1996) , for which he received an Academy Award Nomination for best actor. Tom Cruise's biggest franchise, Mission Impossible, has also earned a total of 3 billion dollars worldwide. Tom Cruise has also shown lots of interest in producing, with his biggest producer credits being the Mission Impossible franchise. In 1990 he renounced his devout Catholic beliefs and embraced The Church of Scientology claiming that Scientology teachings had cured him of the dyslexia that had plagued him all of his life. A kind and thoughtful man well known for his compassion and generosity, Tom Cruise is one of the best liked members of the movie community. He was married to actress Nicole Kidman until 2001. Thomas Cruise Mapother IV has indeed come a long way from the lonely wanderings of his youth to become one of the biggest movie stars ever. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Tom McDonough, Grant failor

It talked about many things that I strive for in my own life: loyalty, compassion, responsibility, the idea of looking back on your life and taking responsibility for everything you've ever done. I'm fascinated by the samurai and the samurai code - it's one of the main reasons I wanted to make The Last Samurai (2003) .

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's Relationship Timeline: A Look Back

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers met in 1985 before tying the knot in 1987.

ICYMI — or are just having a hard time remembering — Oscar-nominated actor Tom Cruise and actress Mimi Rogers dated in Cruise's  post-Cher  and pre- Nicole Kidman  days. The pair met in 1985 — although how, exactly, is up for debate — and married in 1987, marking a first for Cruise and the second marriage for Rogers. The pair later finalized their divorce in 1990.

During the course of their relationship, the  Risky Business  star and  The Rapture  starlet spoke highly of each other when giving interviews and confidently stepped out in public as each other's arm candy (not everyone can pull off T-shirts tucked into Bermuda shorts with ease). However, as with any couple, Cruise and Rogers had their ups and downs. Throw in the pressures of Hollywood, and it would eventually prove all too much for the actors.

Here's a look back at Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's relationship.

1985: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers first meet

In 1986, Cruise, then 23,  told  Rolling Stone  he'd met Rogers, then 29, "at a dinner party about a year ago" when he was developing the original  Top Gun .  However, the courtship wasn't  quite  as simple as a young Cruise introducing himself and asking to date Rogers. The actor said Rogers "was dating a friend" at the time.

"I thought she was extremely bright," Cruise recalled to the publication.

Rogers remembered things differently,  telling  Sun Sentinel   that she and Cruise had been introduced by mutual friends.

"I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other,'" Rogers told the newspaper. "And we said, 'Aw, what the heck. OK.'"

May 9, 1987: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers get married

The idea of marriage was introduced quickly, but given the magnitude of Cruise's stardom following the success of the blockbuster Top Gun  , the couple referred to their wedding by an ominous title: "The Project." Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist herself, is believed to have been one of Cruise's first links to the polarizing belief system.

In May 1987, Cruise and Rogers executed their, uh, project and tied the knot,  according to  People .  The Mighty Ducks  actor Emilio Estevez was Cruise's best man at the "very small, intimate and beautiful" event. Interestingly, nearly one year before Cruise and Rogers wed, he told  Rolling Stone,  "I don't know if I could get married."

Rogers spoke fondly of Cruise in their years together. "There's a lot of contentment and security (in marriage)," she  told  Chicago Tribune  in 1988. "I highly recommend it.''

December 9, 1989: Tom Cruise files for divorce from Mimi Rogers

According to Andrew Morton's  Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography , the actor filed for divorce on Dec. 9, 1989. Production on  Days of Thunder  (starring Cruise and his future wife, Kidman) began just two days later. In 1995, Cruise  described to  Vanity Fair  his reaction to meeting Kidman as "instant lust."

Morton cited a statement made by Cruise and Rogers to address the announcement of their split in January 1990: "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time."

Ironically, just days before news of Cruise and Rogers's split broke, the  Rain Man  star insisted that (despite tabloid conjecture) he "couldn't imagine being without" his then-wife. "Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot," he  revealed to  Rolling Stone  in 1990. "I think it's helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything. That's the best thing about life. Otherwise, you go through it pretty sad and lonely and angry." At the risk of laying it on too thick, Cruise added, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her."

February 1990: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers finalize divorce

After finalizing his divorce from Rogers in February 1990, Cruise and Kidman reportedly wed in December. The actor  told Barbara Walters  in 1992 that he and his ex hadn't spoken "in a couple of years," though he did "wish her well."

In 1993, the  Bosch  star spoke to  Playboy ,  per E! Online , and made some interesting comments about her ex. "Here's the real story," she reportedly told the publication. "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument." She also mentioned that her own instrument "needed tuning."

Rogers was candid about the trouble of being married to one of the most famous men in the world.

"You cease to be an individual," she  told  People  in 1995. "No matter what the article is, it's 'Tom Cruise's wife ...'" Rogers added that she was waiting for the moment when she didn't "have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore."

Though, in 2001, she  explained to  The Telegraph  that "stardom wasn't really a problem" in their marriage. "What did annoy me was the age thing," she added. "Every six months, [the press] seemed to add another year to my age. If we were still married, the press would have me in my 60s by now."
