Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft produces high launch and low spin with a unique feel.

Check out the low launch, low spin Tour AD VF HERE

Introduction

Graphite Design is a no-nonsense company.  Every year, they release one or two new shafts with relatively modest fanfare (we reviewed the excellent Tour AD TP earlier this year).  If you need giant social media campaigns, there are shaft companies that give you that.  If you just want solid performance, check out GD.

tour ad iz 6

Appropriate for this time of year, the Graphite Design AD IZ sports an orange and matte black color scheme .  This look is the inverse of one of their most successful models, the Tour AD DI .

Graphically, Graphite Design always plays it straight: simple branding below the handle with a shift in the base color.  This is an all-business look for the serious player, and it’s immediately recognizable as Graphite Design.

tour ad iz 6

On paper, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is similar to the Tour AD DI .  The company’s website  describes the AD IZ as being Firm+ in the tip, Medium in the middle, and Firm in the butt.  The AD DI has the same Medium mid section, but the tip is Stiff (half a notch firmer than the AD IZ) and the butt is Medium (a whole notch softer).

That similarity transfers over to the real world.  The tip is extremely stable in both shafts.

What’s different is that the AD IZ doesn’t kick the way the AD DI does; it feels like the energy flows from the handle to the club head .  This is slightly unusual – it’s more common for a shaft to have that distinct bend point – but it’s a great feel once you get used to it.

Performance

What struck me during my testing of the Tour AD IZ was the consistency .  In my first few swings, I struggled with the feel simply because it’s different than what I’ve been gaming.  However, that smooth, whip-crack feel was the same swing after swing, so I was able to get locked in with it quickly.

Once I was dialed in, I saw exactly the ball flight that Graphite Design describes: high launch and low spin .  With the stable tip, I was able to swing hard without a fear of “losing” the shaft.  On the other hand, the feel was so smooth that I could swing easily and still feel it working.  Whether swinging hard or soft, I was able to control the ball flight and maintain near-optimal distance.

The Tour AD IZ is available in a wide range of weights and flexes .  The lightest is 40 grams, available in Lite/Senior and Regular flex.  It’s also important to note that the 40 gram version has a very different profile – a soft tip with medium mid and butt sections.  Every flex from Senior to X is available at 50 grams, with the 50-X being a first for Graphite Design.  The 60 gram model has Regular, Stiff, and X versions.  Only big swingers – Stiff and X – need apply for the 70 or 80 gram models.

tour ad iz 6

The Tour AD IZ enhances the Graphite Design line-up by adding a unique feel that still has the consistency that players of all levels want.  If you’re looking to get your drives “Into the Zone” of high launch and low spin, the AD IZ is definitely worth a look.

I had a GD Purple Ice in a driver and felt it was the best shaft I’ve ever used. Great kick at the correct point and consistent ball flight. Tried a GD YS 6 afterward and it was not satisfying. This sounds similar in feel, so I’d be game to try it.

' src=

Just got the iz 6x , I have played a Mitsubishi blue board 62 stiff in my last 5 drivers. Never really believed a shaft could add a noticeable amount of distance. This one is an easy 10 to 15 yards farther and accurate. I did not get fitted but I borrowed 5 different shafts and just liked the feel of this one. It’s still the player and the swing, but when I swing easy, man it goes. Tp 7 handicap

' src=

Tour AD IZ vs DI for Driver and 3 wood? Swing speed is close to yours.

' src=

If you’re asking which I would play, I’d choose the DI. If you’re asking for a recommendation for yourself, I would say to go work with a fitter.

' src=

What is the loft of your driver you tested with Tour AD IZ?

9 degree PING G400.

' src=

Hi Matt, Why would you choose the DI over the IZ? Feel or just better performance?

The two are connected. The feel of the DI is more comfortable for me, so it performs a bit more consistently. Or perhaps more accurately, I perform more consistently with it.

' src=

I’m in the process of researching shafts to put into my new 3 wood. How would compare the IZ to the Atmos Red Tour Spec in terms of feel and performance?

I have a full review of the ATMOS Tour Spec line here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-atmos-shaft-review/

' src=

Did you tip the shaft at all? In the past I have been an DI 7x, and 8x tipped more. I’m looking for a little more stability with less work. Would the IZ be a perfect in-between going in the 6tx and 7tx

I did not tip it, installed it straight in.

' src=

I’m playing the AD IZ5 X at 46″ in a Mizuno driver and think it’s the best shaft I’ve hit in a long time. It is very accurate, consistent, long, and great feeling. A real winner!

' src=

Im getting fitted for a new driver next week. His previous recommendation for my previous driver was the Tour AD MJ but I will try out the DI this time out. Unfortunately they do not the new IZ available for testing. If the DI is recommended how do I go about choosing between the DI and the IZ as they both have similar characteristics?

I’m not trying to be funny or rude, but if the DI is recommended by your fitter, get the DI. Don’t overthink it.

' src=

Matt, does this feel and launch similar to the PX Evenflow black? Thanks…Ed

In my opinion, the EvenFlow Black has a feel that’s substantially different than the AD IZ. Launch will depend on how the individual mixes with each shaft.

Any plan on testing Tour AD VR?

Yes, we have a couple coming in shortly.

Hey Matt, which driver head did you use for this test?

Ping G400 Max.

How did the AD IZ shaft perform in the Ping G400 max

That’s the head I used in this review.

How would you say this compares to the VR? Thanks Matt.

Which of the two shafts you would choose to play in a 2 sim dhy iron (more pentrating flight and low spin) and 4 sim dhy iron (higher flight and more mid spin?)

What two shafts am I choosing between?

sorry the text was incomplete. I am not able to have a fitting in the country i live and i would like suggestion which shaft you would reccomend between AD DI and AD IZ to play with the SIM DHY #2 and #4 irons. I currently play AD DI 65 grams Stiff regular in the driver and TGI 80 stiff in the irons. Thank you!

I have only tested the AD IZ hybrid shaft. I would suggest that if you’re comfortable with the IZ in your driver, try that in your hybrids, too.

' src=

You answer are never to the point you should test more . Or don’t answer.

' src=

Angelo Morgan you illiterate Muppet. You should beat it with that idiotic comment.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have a tendency to over draw the driver. I’m currently using the GD Tour AD DI 7 Stiff in my Driver. Do you think the GD Tour AD IZ 7 Stiff would help straighten out the drives? Or would you have a recommendation to try? Barry.

It’s possible, but not a guarantee. I always recommend getting a fitting rather than buy-and-try because you’ll get to see the results before you spend the money.

' src=

Hello is this the closest to the YS in the Tour AD range? Thank you and stay safe

I don’t have enough experience with the YS to say for certain.

' src=

Hi Matt, looking to pair up a woods shaft to my irons modus 120s – would the IZ be a good match in terms of feel? Cheers

That combo might work for you, but I wouldn’t say those two shafts are similar in feel to me.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft

Graphite Design is a company that should not be overlooked if you are in the market for a new shaft for your driver or woods.

While the company doesn’t have the market share that companies like Aldila and Mitsubishi do, their shafts are steadily gaining in popularity.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is a perfect example of why their shafts are gaining more attention.

This is a shaft that is said to deliver high launch and low spin – a great combination for moderate swing speeds players. So does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ deliver? Let’s find out.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Overview

We’re not huge fans of the orange and matte black color scheme of this shaft. The colors make it look like this is a Halloween-themed shaft.

But once we got past the looks, we were treated with a very fluid feel. “Fluid” is the best adjective to describe the activity of the shaft.

There is a very subtle kick. In fact, unless you really load up on it, it’s easy to miss any distinct kick point.

Instead, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ flexes smoothly and easily transfers energy down the shaft and into the ball. The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was built to have a softer midsection than the butt.

And unless you opt for the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ in its lightest weight class (40g), the tip section is very stiff.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 4 has a soft tip section. Overall, this isn’t your typical graphite shaft.

It just doesn’t feel exactly like a graphite shaft. But that wasn’t a bad thing for our testers. After a few swings, they grew to enjoy the unique feel of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ.

Why is the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ So Popular?

It should be noted that the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ comes in a variety of weights and flexes.

This is one of the things that makes it so popular: there is a version of this shaft for pretty much every kind of golfer.

How Does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Perform?

So does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ live up to the promise of high launch and low spin? Yes and no.

The launch angles were really good. They fluctuated between 14 and 15 degrees. More importantly, it was very easy to achieve those launch angles. However, we were expecting lower spin rates.

During our testing, we couldn’t work the spin rates lower than 2100 RPMs.

This isn’t terribly high spin for a graphite shaft, but so much had been made about how muted the spin of this shaft was that we were a bit let down.

Still, this allowed for better workability. Our better testers were able to affect draws and fades and attack doglegs strategically.

Plus, the mid spin rates made it easier to control rollout. Distance was not a problem. After three swings, our testers were averaging a carry distance of 261.5 yards.

This was very impressive considering that our testing party consists of moderate and fast swingers. The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was also pleasingly consistent.

On all but severe mis-hits, we were getting tight shot dispersion. In fact, our offline divergence never crept into double digits (yards).

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Lite/senior stiff is for anyone swinging their driver slower than 70 MPH.

Regular, stiff and stiff/regular would be a good choice for swing speeds in the 75-85 MPH range. Stiff and extra stiff are for 86-95 MPH swingers. Tour extra stiff is for 95+ MPH swingers.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The 40g weight class is for sub 70 MPH swingers.

The 50g class is for 75-85 MPH swingers. The 60g class is for 86-90 MPH swingers. The 70g class is for 91-100 MPH swing speed players. The 80g class is for 100+ MPH swingers.

Why is it So Good?

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft1

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is a good shaft because it doesn’t waste an iota of your swing speed.

You can feel it working but it never feels “jerky” or out of control. Instead, you get a smooth transition of energy from the butt to the club head.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ First Impressions

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft2

Our first impression of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was that it had a very unique feel.

After testing dozens of graphite wood shafts, you sort of get tunnel-visioned. You think that all graphite shafts are supposed to feel a certain way.

But the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ has a more controlled feel than most graphite shafts.

Key Features & Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ utilizes a carbon fiber prepreg in the stiff section to enhance stability.

In terms of performance, this feature makes the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ incredibly consistent.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Driver Review

Out of the box, we had the ability to work the ball or shoot it more or less straight.

It’s a great shaft to keep you on the fairway or aggressively attack doglegs.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Fairway Wood Review

With our woods, we were comfortable able to avoid hitting the ball too thick. It maintained its fluid feel off the deck.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Pros & Cons

  • Tight dispersion
  • Easy to get the hang of
  • Many weight classes
  • Mediocre spin rates

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft

Overall Score: 96/100

Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Which is Better?

Golf is a game of precision that requires deliberate effort. While every golf accessory significantly influences game performance, shafts rank very high.

They come in different sizes, types, and styles, but the purpose remains the same: allowing players to strike the ball effectively and control ball flight more.

With the wide range of golf shaft options, you need an informed decision to make the right choice.

Graphite Designs shafts are often recommended because of their quality materials, efficient ball control, and excellent feel.

Hence, we’ll compare two of its designs: Tour AD DI and IZ, establishing their similarities and differences to enable you to choose the better one.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Overview

Graphite Design is a reputable organization that produces a wide range of shafts for golfers.

The company is one of the front-runners of shaft technology in the industry.

Every year, the brand introduces new designs that offer distinct attributes. The Tour AD shaft lineup is expanding significantly to satisfy both new and experienced golfers.

The Tour AD DI is an earlier shaft design by the brand. The latest release is the Tour AD IZ which features a sleek finish and stealthy appearance.

While some professionals think both shafts have similar specifications and performance, Graphite Designs claim they have different features, but the latest design is not a direct replacement of the former.

According to the brand, the Tour AD IZ lies between the lower launching Tour AD TP and higher launching DI, courtesy of its slightly stiffer tip and midsection and softer butt section.

Let’s establish the differences between the two shaft designs.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Differences

Tour AD DI vs. IZ

Generally, both shaft designs are similar, but Tour AD IZ has a softer tip. It also has a bit higher balance point, which makes it slightly counterbalanced.

As such, it’ll play better in heavier retail heads, plus it will improve the overall ball feel.

It doesn’t kick as its predecessor does. It typically transfers energy from the handle to the golf club head.

Let’s differentiate between them using some factors as follows:

Flex is the amount of bend a golf club gives during a swing session. It directly affects the amount of bend a shaft will have.

The greater the flex, the more the shaft will bend, and vice versa.

The flex option is a significant difference between the two shaft designs.

Both avail different types of flex options. The AD DI features a stiff flex option, while the AD IZ has the Regular option.

Concerning flex, the AD DI will have less bend amount compared to the AD IZ.

If you have a slower swing speed, the flexible shafts will be your best choice, so you should choose the AD DI shaft design.

However, if you have a faster swing speed, stiffer shafts will fit you better. Hence, it would help if you chose the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ.

There’s no difference between both shafts’ launch angles. They both feature a high launch angle, meaning the shaft will assist the golfer in getting quality height on the ball right off impact.

If you’re looking to achieve more ball height, both will be a good deal for you, as whichever you choose won’t make any difference.

The spin attribute is another area where both shafts are the same. They feature the same low spin options, meaning you can keep the ball closer to the course surface.

If you want to achieve this, either shaft option will help you get that. However, if you wish for a higher spin option, you should explore other opportunities elsewhere.

Both shafts seem to exhibit a similar feel. The brand website claims the AD IZ is Firm in the butt, medium in the center, and Firm+ in the tip.

Their midsection is also similar.

Regarding appearance, the AD IZ design features a matte black and orange color scheme which is ideal for almost every season. The AD DI design is the inverse of this style.

The legal status of any golf accessory is another essential factor to consider before buying it.

The USGA has strict equipment rules every golf equipment piece must obey before being deemed legal.

Both shaft designs conform to all these rules, making them legal for use in any golf-level competition.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ

Both are fantastic golf shafts with similarities and differences, as established above. Realistically, there might not be a better one in all ramifications.

The better one will depend on what each golfer wants and their preference.

As discussed above, they differ in some factors, including flex, feel, and look, making them ideal for different target audiences.

Depending on the swing speed and preferences, players might choose differently. Tailor your wants to the strengths of each shaft design and choose the best one accordingly.

Yes, both are exceptional but they do feel a bit different from one another. In the same flex the IZ feels firmer and more one-piece. The DI definitely has a more noiceable/pronounced kick to it. I prefer the IZ

You can demo via ShaftShack which I did and it helped sort it out. I demo'd DI, IZ and TP in 6S. For whatever reason, the IZ felt looser to me than the DI when playing a round - not logical based on design, but, what I felt. TP didn't give me the launch I need, went DI and am pleased. Best bet is to try them out during a round especially as they are some cash money.

This is my experience too

IZ definitely feels more linear or one piece, DI for me felt very loose with a big kick to it. TP feels more like the IZ than the DI, but you still feel a small kick with the TP. It all comes down to how much load you put on the shaft and when your release is. The later your release the more you will feel each shaft kick. Ball flight from highest to lowest for me was IZ, DI, TP.

I load the shaft pretty good with an early release. The AD DI was pretty good for me. Wondering about the IZ.

What exactly are you looking for? The IZ will feel different than the DI. IZ will feel stiffer in the handle section and probably about the same in the mid section, DI will feel softer overall and best suited for smooth tempo swings.

Playing the Tensei Pro White now and it isn’t working out. The AD DI was good I thought and my fitter (seller) different. I hit many good drives with with the AD DI, but it could get loose.

If the DI was good but could get a bit loose, then I would take a look at maybe tipping the DI, or the AD TP.

The bend profile of the IZ is different than the DI, the TP is basically a tighter feeling DI. TP is stiff tip, firm mid, firm handle, where the DI is stiff tip, medium mid, soft/medium handle.

mokedaddy

I really love the feel of iz but I had to find a tx for it to work with my swing. Otherwise I was a huge of the gp. Like others have said you really need a smooth transition for the di to work. The tp is definitely my favorite 3 wood shaft of all time.

Tried the TP and it was not fit me. Maybe the AD DI is just for me..Hoping the IZ would be just a hair better to hit more fairways. Can’t hirt you buy one and sell it if I don’t like it.

I’ll be staying with the PXG ahead because it just feels so darn good.

Man the GD AD IZ is awesome! I do like it much better than the AD DI. Everyone perfectly described the loading of the IZ. It is more one piece and not such kick. I felt like I could control it a little better. Just felt really good paired up with PXG 0811x.

I came from a GD AD DI, then to a Tensei Pro White (PXG FIT) and now to the IZ. The Pro White I just couldn’t launch and the IZ is much better and feels very solid.

Glad I made the switch.... so far.

Stetson

Huge fan of the IZ, have had it for quite a while now. I have the DI in 3w, 3h and D.I.

IZ is much more of a one piece, launches higher but it is tighter and straighter. DI spins a ton so it balloons At times.

Yeah it took me awhile to get used to how high the iz launches but it’s fun to hit.

Ad di feels smoother

Ad iz is a touch more stout

I just picked up an IZ 6x today.. excited to get it locked and loaded. Happy to update in the next couple weeks.

Loving the IZ 6x in my TSI3. This thing just wants to go straight. Not sure if it’s the shaft, head or both but I’m loving it. FIR was about 60% before the new combo. These are my last 5 rounds with the IZ.

I am back in the IZ in my PXG Proto+. Been using the TP and the IZ has a higher launch and more carry. Getting 2 clubs more into greens at a course I always play. Even my partners noticed the difference. Bombing it yesterday. So glad I made the switch. Best round of driving the ball in years.

Now thinking about an IZ in my fairways because I hit them a little too low and sacrificing some yardage.

MerryTex

Picked up the IZ 6x for my SIM 2 Max and I'm not quite sold on it. I would rather be in an AD DI 6x. It definitely feels more stable and one-piece than the DI. I just like the way the DI loads and unloads for my swing.

Good stuff. Thanks. Just what I need in my fairways because I need more launch for sure.

I swear the AD IZ and the TSi heads are a great match.

Transitioning from a AD Di 6x to an IZ 6S - I turn 40 in a few months and my SS has consistently dipped year over year to where I am at now at about 103MPH. I just got back from a quick range session and I hit the IZ S. When I hit it straight, it felt good but I was noticing I lost quite a few quick to the left. This is concerning because I play the ball right to left. It could have been the poorly cleaned range balls or the swing/shaft combo. I need to test it more but I am very interested in shaftshack. Why didn’t I think of this years ago?

I’m a bit slower (and older), but found my miss the same with the IZ.  I was comparing DI-6 S and IZ-6 S, and expected the left miss wouldn’t be as severe with an assumed tighter version of the DI being the IZ.  I’m a left to right player, and found the DI leaning more right to left for me, and though the IZ would straighten that out a bit.  I only got more left side faster.  It was straighter by comparison, but exaggerated the left leaning miss.

I’m going to play a few holes today with my ball ProV1x instead of the range balls from yesterday. Curious to see if I get different results, if not I’m moving to the DI 6S to see if I get more similar results to my DI 6X.

  22. Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Which is Better?

The greater the flex, the more the shaft will bend, and vice versa. The flex option is a significant difference between the two shaft designs. Both avail different types of flex options. The AD DI features a stiff flex option, while the AD IZ has the Regular option. Concerning flex, the AD DI will have less bend amount compared to the AD IZ.

  23. GD Tour AD DI vs. Tour AD IZ

The IZ will feel different than the DI. IZ will feel stiffer in the handle section and probably about the same in the mid section, DI will feel softer overall and best suited for smooth tempo swings. Quote.
