I booked the trip from a website by putting all my trust in the company. It was only a general search and to my surprise, this is my best decision ever. Being a solo female I was very upset at first. I loved the way these people help the tourists. The teams stayed in touch with me and guided me about everything (even the excursions which were not a part of my trip plan). My entire trip was very well planned according to the things I loved. Thank you so much for making the trip so memorable for me

Explore Vietnam is the best place to book your trip if you want a hassle-free tour with lots of interesting things to do. There is no need to worry about transportation, food, and activities. The prices are very reasonable with excellent service. The schedule was very good as we explored every place conveniently. We got a chance to visit many places in one tour because of the planning of the company. The tour guide had broad knowledge and good English language skills. It was an amazing experience with a lot of fun, adventure, and very interesting details about every place

I have visited Vietnam quite a few times but this time it was different and more fun. I booked the trip to have a hassle-free experience without the need to book transport and other arrangements but I got a lot more than that. This amazing team made my trip a package of adventure and entertainment. They helped me witness a completely different side of Hanoi. The information about places, war history, and legends associated with the places are some extraordinary things to know. The best part of my trip was the interaction with local life which is not easy to …  Read more »

Being a journalist, I wanted to explore the historical and religious side of Vietnam. The tour guide had vast knowledge of every place. The entire trip was very comfortable. The tour vehicle picked me up from the hotel and took me to the city center first. After that, we visited One Pillar Pagoda, the Ethnological Museum, the Temple of literature, HoanKiem Lake, and many other places. Short stops in rural areas and villages were very interesting. Loved interacting with the locals and learning about their daily chores. There are many small workshops where people make pottery, handicrafts, and other items …  Read more »

I have one word for the services and travel plan “Amazing”. The day out was filled with activities and adventure. The tour guide was excellent with unlimited knowledge about the places and their history. We had an enjoyable and lovely day while exploring the countryside. It was a great combination of physical activity and learning. Food breaks are filled with delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Many locals have small food stalls where they serve food prepared with fresh ingredients and sea foods. The tour guide also shared information about the places which were not included in the trip and we visited them …  Read more »

This is the best website to get the most well-planned tour of the city and attractions. There are many incredible places to explore with cultural importance and rich history. The tour company picked us up from the accommodation. My wife and I had a private tour filled with adventures. We enjoyed cycling through the country side. It was the most memorable and romantic experience. I recommend the tour company because the team is very honest. They recommend the best places according to the preferences of the visitors. We tried delicious local Vietnamese foods and desserts made with fresh ingredients from …  Read more »

The tour guide knew a lot about every place we visited. He also shared very interesting stories and legends which were associated with the places. A comfortable pair of shoes is a must. There are many places to explore by walking especially the HoanKiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. These spectacular places made our day excellent and memorable. These wonderful people made our Hanoi trip the most memorable trip of our life. It was an incredible experience filled with a lot of fun and adventure. Everything was very well planned. They gave us an overview of the entire trip and we loved everything in it. Many stops included information on historical background. Vietnamese food is available everywhere so enjoyed many local snacks and cuisines. The tour guide gave me information about the cooking classes in a couple of places. This is considered the heart of Vietnam's 1,000 year-old capital. Worldwide, food lovers refer to this area as heaven because of the variety of street foods and their complex flavors, ranging from small snacks to main dishes and sweet desserts. There are many family-owned restaurants that have been run for generations, and their special recipes and secret ways to cook delicious, authentic Hanoian food cannot be found anywhere else. This area is also home to a beloved holy attraction — Hoan Kiem Lake (Sword Lake). This is a source of deep pride for all Hanoians and the starting point for measuring any distance. There is a traditional food market in the area as well. We experience the freshness of ingredients provided to the nearby restaurants early morning.

Best things to do and see in Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital of Vietman and one of the most visited cities in all of Asia. Its century-old architecture is possibly what attracts the most attention, as is the Vietnamese culture, influenced by Chinese, French and other Southeast Asian countries. The Old Town of the city is the point on which the city revolves, being somewhat chaotic at the same time that we can find with certain order the stores to be distributed by trades in its narrow streets. In addition, you will find a large number of small temples scattered throughout the city that are worth visiting. If you decide to do a free walking tour in Hanoi with a local guide you will be able to know the essential places, as well as the most emblematic places of the city. You should visit the Ho Chi Ming Mausoleum and the Hanoi Presidential Palace as first options. Other points of interest that are worthwhile are the Ho Chi Ming House, the War Museum, the Single Pillar Pagoda, the Old Quarter, the Dong Xuan Market, Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Pagoda of Tran Quoc Pen, the French colonial quarter or move on to see the largest mosaic in the world. All free tours in Hanoi have the opinions of travelers who have lived the experience of visiting with the local guide. You can complement the information of each tour with the assessments about the route and what each local guide has provided. Other cities worth visiting are Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Siem Reap or Taipei City.

Walking Tour Hanoi

The old quarter Hanoi was established since 11th century with the long history of more than one thousand years. This used to be a very bustle and busy trading center, gathered skilled and talent craftsmen and businessmen trading in crowded shops closely together among dense streets. Since then each street in the old quarter sold each type of goods and to make the trading more convenient, both the sellers and the buyers call the street as the name of goods sold in it. The old quarter Hanoi is also known as the trading quarter, the 36- streets , in which the old quarter was the most common name and still very popular till nowadays.

Today, some streets in 36-street quarter are still grouped by what they sell, with names to match, such as Bat Su (china bowls), Cha Ca (roasted fish), Hang Bac (jewelry), Hang Dau (shoes and sandals), Hang Gai (silks), Hang Luoc (combs), Hang Duong (candies and dried fruits), and Hang Buom (bamboo products).

You are now be able to choose a cyclo trip or electric buggy to explore this historic old quarter Hanoi, however the best way to really experience Hanoi old quarter is on foot . Wander around and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood, explore the winding lanes and stop for coffee at local café or taste some local street food if you wish, stop for a chat; local people are busy but friendly if you take time to connect.

Refer to our walking tour route suggested below to start planning your old quarter Hanoi trip, you can start at a place in old quarter if your hotel is nearby, or if you stay far away, I suggest you start the walking tour from the Temple of Literature, so you can extend your tour not to cover the old quarter.

Walking times vary depending on your clip and your interest in the details, but generally, allow a few hours. Try to study the map discreetly and know your next turn before arriving at an intersection. Just a short time in the old quarter will have you distinguishing a Chinese temple or community house from a tube house or more French-influenced construction.

Photographers will want to set out early and catch the dynamic colors of the morning sun, which set off the rich yellowed plaster of older buildings and make the colors of produce in the markets more vibrant.

9.    Lan Ong street

One of the most interesting parts of the Old Quarter, Lan Ong Street is still home to a large enclave of ethnic Chinese who sell the herbs and medicines of old from small storefronts that date back to the origins of the quarter. Here you’ll find picturesque little interiors with walls lined in massive dark-wood cabinets with tiny drawers and buckets and bins all around, with the most curious assortment of dried goods you’ll ever see. The buildings all along this short stretch are originals dating back as far as the 17th century. Look for the busy elementary school at no. 40 Lan Ong, which was once the communal house of the area’s Chinese population. Just across from the converted communal house and all along the length of the street, look for low roofs and narrow entries, especially those with tile roofs covered in moss, as these are original Chinese homes.

10.  Hang Duong street.

Hang Duong Street (Sugar St.) is lined with traditional constructions, foremost of which is the communal house on the left as you go north at no. 38 Hang Duong St. It has a stunning banyan tree in the courtyard and a dark, alluring charm to its smoky interior. Note: Hang Duong is a pedestrian area on weekend nights and becomes a busy little market for tourist trinkets and local goods.

A short detour off of Hang Duong is the 13th-century Thanh Ha Communal House, just a short walk east on Ngo Gach Street (Brick St.).

Goods being sold there are very diverse, ranging from electronic household appliances, silk, clothes to fresh food like chicken, meat, vegetable. Specially, the market is a venue of Hanoi’s night gastronomy with numbers of street-food stalls.

12.  Old East Gate (O Quang Chuong)

The only surviving gate of the citadel of Thang Long, O Quan Chuong not only brings beauty in architecture but also represents Hanoi ancient history. The only remaining old city gate of Hanoi, O Quan Chuong not only inscribed the mark of the Thang Long capital but also a proof of struggle of the indomitable people in the fight against foreign invaders.

13.  Hang Buom street

Hang Buom (Sail St.) once adjacent to a small tributary of the To Lich River, which brought goods to the city, Hang Buom was where local merchant vessels came to refit their ships. Look for the many colonial buildings and traditional Vietnamese houses, as well as a communal house at no. 22 Hang Buom.

At no. 76 Hang Buom St., located the Bach Ma Temple . Built in A.D. 1010, the temple is dedicated to the White Horse of legend, which, it is said, helped the early king of the Viet people, Ly, decide where and how to defend his city. The temple interior is a grand courtyard of massive red pillars and large Buddhist statuary and altars.

14.  Ma May street

Ma May is the beginning of the busiest budget tourist areas of the Old Quarter. In and among Internet cafes and tourist restaurants (often one and the same), you’ll find good examples of traditional and colonial buildings. The Huong Tuong Communal House is at no. 64 Ma May, and one of the most interesting sights in the city can be found at no. 87 Ma May – Heritage House Hanoi , a refurbished and restored traditional house. Here, for a fee of just 10,000 VND, a young docent dressed in a traditional flowing ao dai gown will take you on an informative tour of the building and can explain important details about life in the Old Quarter in centuries past.

15.  Luong Ngoc Quyen

A venue of snack food-stalls with a variety of traditional cakes like Banh Day, Banh Gio or Banh Chin Tang May. At this criss-cross, there are crowd in summer and winter alike sitting and drinking beer. You may take a break and join them for a local beer or snacks.

16.  Hang Bac

You’re in the heart of the backpacker area. Hang Bac means “Silver Street,” and you still can find some silver (and gold) jewelry makers and sellers. You’ll find good shopping and lots of goods and services in this area.

This street also located the Golden Bell theater at no. 72 Hang Bac, which was the stronghold of troops who laid siege to the French after the August Revolution in 1945.

17.  Hoan Kiem late & Ngoc Son temple

It would be great to take a small tour around the lake side and take some photos or watching the green water surface of it. And pay a visit to Ngoc Son temple on the north end of the lake. Cross the red Bridge of the Rising Sun to reach the temple. From this most prominent point in the city. The walking tour ends from here, you can now take a seat at a lakeside cafe, enjoy an ice scream or watch a show of water puppet…

Although there are still some old streets we haven’t looked at like Hang Ngang, Hang Dao or Hang Ma Street.., you are suggested to save them for the night trip because Hanoi’s night is most wonderful on those streets, when the busy trading stores giving their seats to street-food stalls and souvenirs stalls, adorned by twinkling red lanterns on Hang Ma Street…

Vietnam tore two families apart. This fast-paced narrative explores why.

In “Diplomats at War,” Charles Trueheart delves into the story of his father and godfather — diplomats and friends who parted ways after a fateful policy decision.

One afternoon in the summer of 2019, Rufus Phillips , 89, a Vietnam hand and legendary former CIA officer, was casting six decades back to recall how the quagmire had begun. We sat in a modest apartment on a low floor of a tall building in Northern Virginia, surrounded by art and books, bounty of his years in Asia.

“We faced more turning points in Vietnam than you could count, but that was a point of no return,” he said of the assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his shadowy brother Ngo Dinh Nhu in a 1963 coup coyly blessed by the Kennedy administration. To Phillips, the toll of that moment was clear: U.S. officials, even the most enlightened ones who had come to Saigon in hopes of doing good, would never find a stable course to anything approximating democracy, let alone a military victory.

Phillips is among the Saigon staffers who play small but significant roles in Charles Trueheart’s book “ Diplomats at War .” The two men at the heart of the book — the diplomats of the title — are Frederick “Fritz” Nolting, John F. Kennedy’s ambassador in Vietnam from 1961 to 1963, and Nolting’s No. 2, William Trueheart. In the final months of the Diem regime, as the noose tightened, Nolting and Trueheart, Virginian gentlemen of the Foreign Service and friends since their graduate school days studying epistemology in Charlottesville, parted ways.

“Diplomats” reprises a drama first depicted 52 years ago in David Halberstam’s “The Best and the Brightest,” but what makes this telling so enthralling is that Trueheart is the author’s father and Nolting his godfather. The question of what caused the two men to fall out — was it a policy breach, a personal betrayal or both? — drives the son’s quest and the fast-paced narrative. For the rest of their lives, Nolting and the elder Trueheart exchanged nary a word. (Nolting died in 1989, Trueheart in 1992.) In Trueheart’s family, the rupture would become taboo — roped off by his father as “the business with Fritz.” To Nolting, it remained an unforgivable sin. And to the son and godson, on the cusp of adulthood, the break engendered a “lifetime of stewing about the whole thing.”

Trueheart the son, a former Paris bureau chief for The Washington Post and longtime director of the American Library in Paris, has written a “work of memory hiding inside a work of history” — a tricky endeavor. To be sure, moments of awkward ice-dancing arise: Trueheart père morphs from “William Trueheart” to “Bill” to “my father” and, only occasionally, “Daddy.” But the son has achieved something rare in the annals of diplomatic history, mining family letters, federal archives and oral history to craft a tale both riveting and revelatory, a brisk drama that toggles between Saigon and Washington to offer an inside tour of the secret diplomacy — the cajoling and conniving — as the coup fuse burned.

It was Nolting who in 1961 — when the Geneva Accords still restricted the number of U.S. military personnel to 685 — wrote his old friend encouraging him to “get some realism into the heads of some over-idealistic Americans who seem to think the Communists won’t swallow up an infant democracy tenderized a la Rousseau.” But from the first, Trueheart pushed the harder line and would eventually side with those back in Washington who had lost faith in the Diem regime.

Throughout it all, young Charlie is present, a preteen fixated on, in order of import: cars (the family Ford Fairlane; the Mercedes 220S, shipped in from London; the state cars, “flags flying”), expat would-be street gangs, Boy Scouts and judo lessons at the Cercle Sportif. Fifty years after the war, we are increasingly enlightened by an emerging literature that revisits the Vietnamese side. Not here. Charlie’s closest relationship with a Vietnamese person was with the family chauffeur. And yet, as witness and researcher, he has curiosity on his side.

In exploring what went wrong, the story centers on the fateful summer of 1963. Ambassador Nolting went on holiday. For six weeks, Trueheart ran the Embassy. The explosion that led to the friendship’s end — and in time, as Trueheart the son notes, “the demise of American prudence and clear thinking — came out of nowhere.” The Buddhists of South Vietnam staged an uprising, catching the Americans unaware. The regime cracked down, and the CIA, the State Department and the White House began to plot. Throughout it all, Trueheart, as the ambassador’s chargé d’affaires, made no effort to contact his absent boss. Nolting would forever insist he might have saved the day, had he been recalled.

Yet Nolting did himself no favors that summer, giving an interview to journalist Neil Sheehan in which he downplayed the monks’ complaints: “I have never seen any evidence of religious persecution.” The Buddhists sent a plea to JFK: “The Ambassador would probably want to be presented with nearly 6,000,000 corpses of Jews before being convinced of religious discrimination.” But the coup that followed was, indeed, an ugly affair: As Washington closed its eyes (“not stimulate, not thwart,” in Trueheart’s parsing of the CIA cables), the Ngo brothers imagined themselves gaining safe passage, only to end up “bound and gagged” by insurrectionist generals, “sprayed with machine gun bullets” and “stabbed for good measure.”

Trueheart expertly reprises the drama, but an undertow pervades. “I knew Bill Trueheart only as a son knows a father,” the author writes, “that is intimately, but not at all well.” We learn the contours — the father “worked seven days a week,” “he was more of a distant example” — but Bill Trueheart is felt more by his absence than his presence. Even years later, when the son asked for his father’s thoughts on the murders of the brothers Ngo, the reply seemed to him “rather bloodlessly analytical.”

In the end, it is not Nolting but the author’s father who stands as a cipher. “My father never spoke a meaningful word to me about the summer of 1963.” Author and reader wait to see and hear the fireworks of contretemps, but instead what we hear from the senior Trueheart, three times, is: “Mea culpa.” Trueheart’s son makes no excuses, leaving the record blank — “It would be so interesting to know in his own words what he was feeling” — and instead poses the essential questions: “I have to ask, here and throughout this tragic fracture: did these two close friends of twenty-five years never sit down together in the winter and spring of 1963 and speak frankly to one another? Air their doubts, test their analyses, explore their differences?” As it turns out, it is not the drama of father and son, but of matters of state, that takes on sharper, trenchant focus.

If Trueheart’s father remains remote, his mother, Phoebe, offers her son a proximate witness with an acerbic tongue and emotional intelligence. The diplomat’s wife, to be sure, played hostess. She oversaw seating charts and proffered cocktails at all hours, but as the screws tightened that summer, Phoebe also observed — and acted. We are grateful for the narrative ballast. “To look at me,” Phoebe wrote in a letter that summer, “I am the picture of calm and tranquility. Inside I am churned up. When I do sleep, I have horrible dreams of blood, soldiers, and little children torn apart. … The only time I sleep is when I’ve had lots to drink or taken Seconal.” In the rush to the coup, as the father recedes, or the record fades to black, we hear Phoebe tally the toll on her husband: “He is running on nerves.”

The coup, like all coups, did little to better the lives of the local populace. Rufus Phillips, who died in 2021, was one of the last Americans to see Diem alive. “Do you think there will be a coup?” Diem asked the American. “I looked him in the eye,” Phillips recounted. “I couldn’t lie to him. ‘I am afraid so, Mr. President.’ I felt like crying.” After Diem, there followed “a half-dozen nonviolent coups by fractious Vietnamese generals.” Above all, his removal ended hope for a settlement with Hanoi and, as Trueheart writes, “an off-ramp for the United States from the road to a wider war.” Nolting would remain bitter, and righteous, to the end. “The albatross of Diem’s murder,” he wrote years later, “still hangs heavy around our country’s neck, and especially around the neck of those who plotted his downfall.”

Andrew Meier is the author, most recently, of “Morgenthau: Power, Privilege, and the Rise of an American Dynasty” and is at work on a book about two friends — one American, one Vietnamese — caught in the crossfire of the Vietnam War’s secret counterintelligence battles.
