A Cruise Career Success Story: Victor Mancilla

For Escoffier graduate, Victor Mancilla, living near the bustling Panama Canal 15 years ago and watching majestic cruise ships float by sparked his dream to eventually work on one. “At the time, I went to architectural school, but my passion was always about food.”* Victor says.

He seized the first entry-level opportunity he could get with Celebrity Cruises but really had his sights set on an executive chef position—even though he was told it was a “highly competitive” position. But with his unwavering focus and willingness to take on new responsibilities, he managed to secure this high-ranking position in just four years. He became the official Executive Chef for a few ships in the Galapagos.

“Imagine 16 kitchens, more than 12 restaurants, a 24-hour operation, 22 bars, and 375 crew members,” Victor says. “I remember saying, I don’t know how I’m going to make it for the next two years, but it ended up being the best culinary team in the fleet. And that team was the best ship of the year for two consecutive years.”*

Meanwhile, Victor pursued an online Culinary Arts diploma at Escoffier, while working full-time as an executive chef, simply to refine his skill set and “get better” at the culinary fundamentals.

“[Attending Escoffier] was such a rich experience—so helpful for my ego. It brought me back to reality since I was living a dream…I was living in a paradise,” Victor says. “I don’t regret a single cent that I paid…Because it gave me a vision.”*

“I’ve visited more than 250 cities and that’s the beauty of the cruise ship industry. I lived in Turkey for more than five years. I spent years in New Zealand. I had the privilege to be in the Galapagos, which is one of the most luxurious destinations in the world, for months.”* Victor Mancilla, Escoffier Culinary Arts Graduate

From there, Victor continued to expand his career and jumped to managing 900 crew members in Asia, with his promotion to Food & Beverage Director , requiring him to know the ins and outs of every restaurant on the cruise ship. Even though it was a challenging position to take on, especially during the pandemic, he wouldn’t change it for the world.

Although he’s not out at sea anymore, Victor is still overseeing cruise ship operations as the Corporate Executive Chef at COLUMBIA signature, located in Germany. He lives there with his wife (who he serendipitously met on a cruise ship) and two children. He also runs a Chef Academy for Spanish-speaking children and has authored a collection of ten cookbooks for children.

Explore Various Cruise Ship Job Positions

Now that you know which “archetype” is best suited for cruise ship life, let’s take a peek at some of the most common hospitality and food & beverage positions on cruise ships.

Hotel manager standing in a banquet hall holding onto a tablet

Food and Beverage Managers

Wearing multiple hats, food and beverage managers usually oversee all aspects of the operations side. This may include monitoring food budgets, inventory, quality control, and even guest satisfaction.

Food and beverage managers are typically highly-analytical—spending most of their time evaluating numbers in spreadsheets.

Dining Room Managers

If you think of an orchestra, dining room managers can be viewed as the “conductors” of a cruise ship restaurant. They usually address the flow of traffic, wait times, and any guest concerns, while taking immediate care of any staff needs.

Executive Chef

Along with conceptualizing cruise ship menus, an executive chef usually manages all aspects of food service on a cruise ship. This may include hiring and overseeing all kitchen staff, as well as maintaining food quality control.

Bar Managers

What’s a cruise experience without the endless flow of cocktails ? Bar managers can expect to stay relatively busy on cruise ships, with the responsibility of crafting compelling cocktail menus. On top of educating staff on how to create specialty spirits, bar managers usually oversee alcohol costs and revenue.

Working closely with the dining room managers, the maître d’ interacts with guests and also closely monitors overall dining satisfaction—ensuring that it’s up to par with specified standards. On top of being the “face of the restaurant,” they typically work behind the scenes as well—accommodating any restaurant staff requests.

Hotel Managers

Dedicated to creating a seamless guest experience, hotel managers on cruise ships work to ensure that the entire staff is leading with class and professionalism. Along with directly interacting with passengers on a daily basis, a hotel manager may oversee all fiscal operations, communicating closely with the captain of the cruise ship. They’re also typically responsible for training and hiring skilled staff members who are committed to “wowing” guests.

Chief Cabin Stewards

Housekeeping is one of the largest departments on cruise ships and the chief cabin steward is responsible for managing this sector. With demands to maintain a level of cleanliness 24/7, the chief cabin steward usually must be meticulous and set high standards for the housekeeping staff.

Event Managers

In addition to lounging and enjoying indulging in various cuisines, cruise ship guests will often engage in daily events, such as movie nights, salsa dancing, speakeasy parties, corporate events, and even weddings! Event managers strive to plan these types of events that keep guests entertained, which may require great attention to detail and organization.

Consider a Hospitality or Culinary Education

Restaurant chef sits at a table with a laptop and is writing in a notebook

As you can see, there’s a vast range of hospitality and foodservice jobs you can explore on cruise ships! Although there’s no set educational path for these occupations, obtaining a culinary arts or hospitality degree may help you: a) stand out on your resume b) garner the applicable skill set to prosper c) rise in the ranks and get promoted more quickly.

Escoffier’s Hospitality & Restaurant Operations Management online degree program can help you prepare for several hospitality-focused positions on a cruise ship—with a curriculum focused on hospitality from a business perspective. Students also explore how to cultivate world-class guest experiences, train and manage hospitality employees, utilize technology to enhance business operations, craft menus, prepare for events, and more.

“Our program is meant to get a student prepared for an entry-level position in the hospitality industry, that could lead to a management position.”* Jason Goldman, Escoffier Lead Chef Instructor

Now, if a culinary-centric job on a cruise ship sounds more appealing, such as an executive chef position, you may want to consider a Culinary Arts program, such as the degree and diploma options that Escoffier offers. With more of an emphasis on contemporary culinary techniques, students can explore a variety of topics, such as cooking methods, bake shop staples, commercial food service operations, world cuisines, farm-to-table philosophy, and more.

At the end of the day, which program you choose will likely depend on the cruise ship occupation that interests you the most and if it’s more geared toward hospitality or culinary arts.

Refine Your Skill Set To Work On A Cruise Ship

As we mentioned before, if you exude great communication and customer service skills, stepping into a hospitality job on a cruise ship could be in your wheelhouse.

But if you don’t have any experience in hospitality, how can you begin to foster the necessary skills it might take to start? This is where education and work experience comes in! At Escoffier, students can begin to develop soft and hard skills from day one, just by immersing themselves in the curriculum. On top of this, students must complete one to two externships in order to graduate. These placements can help provide real-world experience and training you can list on your resume.

For example, you might secure an externship on a cruise ship or in a hotel to “get a taste” of what to expect. An externship is also an invaluable opportunity to forge industry connections, which can plant seeds for your future career.

“The externship class allows students–even those with no prior experience–to get their foot in the door. Once they gain that valuable experience, it is easier for them to determine which path they want to take with their careers.”* Maria Davenport, Hospitality & Restaurant Operations Management Instructor

How to Apply for Cruise Ship Jobs

Unlike other jobs where you can apply directly, cruise ships usually partner with agencies that do the hiring for them. So finding a recruiting agency that works with cruise ships can be a great first step. In tandem with this, Escoffier students can also work with Career Services to prepare for the job search, by utilizing one-on-one career coaching and a slew of readiness tools to bolster confidence!

While you begin this stage in the process, you’ll also want to consider exactly how long you’ll want to work on a cruise ship, as placements will vary—meaning you could work on a cruise ship for a week (short-term contract) or several months (long-term contract). Depending on your preferences, look into cruise ships that offer your desired duration, then look into agencies that specifically represent those cruise lines.

Male and female managers discussing upcoming banquet while looking at tablet

Before accepting a job position, you’ll probably also want to consider the type of employment and pay structure that suits you the most. For example, permanent employees might be able to access “contract perks” like longer stints at home, time off preferences, and ongoing healthcare, versus non-permanent employees.

It’s also important to note that some cruise ship positions are salaried, while others are not paid, but you may receive complimentary room and board, plus the occasional gratuity. These are just a few aspects of the job to consider before signing a cruise ship contract.

“The power of working on a cruise ship is that it gives you that confidence. If you put me in a competition right now, I’m not afraid of that. I have to create 18,000 meals a day and design 6,000 recipes in six months.”* Victor Mancilla, Online Culinary Arts Graduate, Corporate Executive Chef

So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey of a lifetime and join the ranks of dreamers who have turned their passion for travel into a fulfilling career, let’s set sail and discover how to get a job on a cruise ship!

Understanding the Cruise Ship Industry

The cruise ship industry is a thriving and dynamic sector that offers a wide range of employment opportunities. Understanding the industry will not only help you choose the right cruise line for your career aspirations but also provide valuable insights into the job requirements and expectations.

Cruise ships are like floating cities, with various departments and functions working together to provide unforgettable experiences to guests. From hospitality and entertainment to engineering and operations, there are diverse roles available onboard.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that cruise lines operate on a seasonal basis, with ships following specific itineraries around the world. Depending on their cruise schedule, ships may have peak seasons and off-peak seasons. It’s crucial to consider this when searching for job opportunities, as some roles may be more readily available during certain times of the year.

Each cruise line offers a unique experience and caters to a different demographic. Some focus on luxury and high-end experiences, while others offer family-friendly voyages or specialize in adventure and expedition cruises. Researching and understanding the various cruise lines will help you identify the ones that align with your interests and skills.

Another factor to consider is the size of the cruise ship. From small yachts to enormous floating resorts, each ship has its advantages and disadvantages. Larger vessels often offer a wider range of amenities and activities, while smaller ships can provide a more intimate experience and the opportunity to visit lesser-known ports.

When it comes to working on a cruise ship, it’s important to note that the industry operates 24/7. This means that employees work on a rotating schedule and are typically assigned to different shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The ability to adapt to a changing work routine and maintain a high level of professionalism is a key requirement for a successful career in the cruise ship industry.

Lastly, it’s crucial to understand that working on a cruise ship is not just about the job itself. Living and working in a confined space with a diverse group of colleagues from around the world can be both challenging and rewarding. Excellent communication skills, teamwork, and a positive attitude are essential to thrive in this unique work environment.

By understanding the cruise ship industry, you can tailor your job search and identify the cruise lines and positions that best suit your skills, interests, and career goals. So, let’s set sail and explore the different cruise lines and job opportunities that await you in the next section!

Identifying the Right Cruise Line for You

With a plethora of cruise lines to choose from, each offering its own unique experience, it’s important to carefully consider and identify the right cruise line for your career goals and personal preferences. Researching and understanding the different cruise lines will help you make an informed decision and increase your chances of securing a job that aligns with your interests and skills.

One of the first steps in identifying the right cruise line is to determine the type of experience you want to offer guests. Some cruise lines focus on luxury and extravagant amenities, while others provide a more casual and family-friendly atmosphere. Consider the type of travelers you enjoy interacting with and the type of environment you thrive in.

Another aspect to consider is the destinations visited by the cruise line. Are you drawn to the tropical Caribbean , the majestic Alaskan fjords, or the historic European ports? Different cruise lines have varying itineraries, so choosing one that aligns with your interests will not only enhance your experience but also provide you with more job opportunities in the destinations you prefer.

It’s also important to consider the size of the cruise line and its fleet. Larger cruise lines may have multiple ships, allowing for more job openings and opportunities for career advancement. However, smaller cruise lines may offer a more intimate work environment and a closer-knit community among crew members.

Furthermore, research the reputation and reviews of the cruise line. Online forums, travel websites, and social media platforms can provide valuable insights into the work culture, employee satisfaction, and guest feedback. Positive reviews and a strong company reputation are indicators of a cruise line that values its employees and provides a supportive work environment.

Lastly, take into consideration the amenities and facilities available on the ship. If you have a specific skill or talent, such as being a trained lifeguard, a certified yoga instructor, or a experienced bartender, look for cruise lines that offer activities or amenities that allow you to utilize those skills. This will not only make your work more enjoyable but also showcase your expertise and increase your chances of landing a job.

By identifying the right cruise line for you, you can focus your job search and tailor your applications to the companies that align with your career goals and preferences. So, let’s move on to the next section where we will delve into researching job opportunities on cruise ships!

Researching Job Opportunities on Cruise Ships

Once you have identified the cruise lines that align with your interests and preferences, it’s time to dive into researching specific job opportunities on those ships. With a multitude of roles available, ranging from hospitality and entertainment to technical and administrative positions, thorough research will help you narrow down the job options that best suit your skills and experience.

Begin your research by visiting the official websites of the cruise lines you are interested in. Navigate to their “Careers” or “Jobs” section, where you will find information about current job openings, job descriptions, and requirements. Pay close attention to the qualifications, experience, and certifications required for each role, as this will help you determine if you meet the criteria.

Consider attending career fairs or job expos that specialize in cruise ship opportunities. These events provide a chance to interact directly with cruise line representatives, ask questions, and gather valuable insights into the industry. Additionally, networking with current or former cruise ship employees can offer valuable advice and insider tips on job opportunities.

Another useful resource for researching cruise ship job opportunities is online job boards and recruitment websites that specifically cater to the cruise industry. Websites like CruiseJobFinder, All Cruise Jobs, and Cruise Ship Jobs list current vacancies and provide a platform for submitting applications online. Make sure to regularly check these websites for updates and new job postings.

Furthermore, consider joining online forums and communities that focus on working and living on cruise ships. These platforms are excellent for connecting with current and former cruise ship employees, exchanging tips, and learning about job openings. Platforms like Cruise Critic, Shipstips, and Crew Center are popular resources for obtaining firsthand information about working onboard.

As you research job opportunities, take note of the specific roles that catch your interest and align with your skills and experience. Create a list of potential positions and prioritize them based on your preferences and qualifications.

By thoroughly researching job opportunities on cruise ships, you will be well-prepared to submit targeted applications and increase your chances of securing a position that matches your interests and qualifications. In the next section, we will explore how to prepare an impressive resume and cover letter to stand out from the competition!

Preparing an Impressive Resume and Cover Letter

Your resume and cover letter are essential tools in applying for a job on a cruise ship. They provide a snapshot of your skills, experience, and qualifications, giving potential employers an insight into why you are the ideal candidate for the position. To make a strong impression and stand out from the competition, it’s important to craft an impressive resume and cover letter tailored to the cruise industry.

When preparing your resume, start by clearly highlighting your relevant experience, skills, and qualifications. Include any previous work experience in the hospitality industry, customer service roles, or positions that demonstrate teamwork and adaptability. Emphasize your language skills, as well as any certifications or training that are relevant to the role you are applying for, such as STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) certificates or specific technical skills.

As you present your experience, focus on achievements and notable accomplishments. Quantify your achievements whenever possible, using numbers and statistics to showcase the impact you made in previous roles. For example, instead of simply stating that you provided excellent customer service, mention that you consistently received positive feedback from guests and achieved high ratings in customer satisfaction surveys.

When writing your cover letter, address it to the specific hiring manager or HR representative mentioned in the job listing. Use the cover letter as an opportunity to introduce yourself, express your enthusiasm for the opportunity, and highlight your qualifications that make you a perfect fit for the specific cruise line and position you are applying for. Research the cruise line’s values, mission, and recent accomplishments to demonstrate your interest and alignment with their brand.

It’s crucial to customize your resume and cover letter for each application. Take the time to read and understand the job description, and tailor your application accordingly. Use keywords from the job posting to demonstrate that you have the specific skills and experience they are looking for.

Ensure that both your resume and cover letter are well-organized, concise, and free of grammatical errors or typos. Use bullet points, headings, and a clean and professional layout to enhance readability. Aim to keep your resume to one or two pages, focusing on the most relevant information for the position.

Lastly, proofread your resume and cover letter multiple times, and even consider asking a trusted friend or family member to review them for you. Attention to detail and professionalism are crucial when applying for a job on a cruise ship, so make sure your application materials are flawless.

By preparing an impressive resume and cover letter that highlight your relevant skills and experiences, you will increase your chances of catching the attention of hiring managers and receiving an invitation for an interview. In the next section, we will discuss how to ace the job interview process and make a lasting impression!

Nailing the Job Interview

Securing a job interview is an exciting step toward realizing your dream of working on a cruise ship. To ensure you make a lasting impression and increase your chances of being offered a position, it’s important to be well-prepared and confident during the interview process. Here are some tips to help you nail your job interview:

1. Research the Company: Before your interview, thoroughly research the cruise line and familiarize yourself with its values, mission, and recent news or achievements. This will demonstrate your genuine interest in the company and allow you to align your answers with its goals and expectations.

2. Dress Professionally: Dress in a clean and professional manner for your interview, adhering to the cruise line’s dress code policies. Even though you may not be meeting in person, dressing professionally will help you feel more confident and leave a positive impression.

3. Practice Common Interview Questions: Prepare yourself by practicing responses to common interview questions such as “Tell me about yourself” or “How do you handle difficult guests?” Rehearsing your answers will help you feel more comfortable and articulate during the interview.

4. Showcase Your Skills and Experience: During the interview, emphasize your relevant skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the position. Provide specific examples of how you have demonstrated those skills in previous roles and highlight any accolades or achievements.

5. Demonstrate Adaptability and Enthusiasm: Working on a cruise ship requires adaptability and a positive attitude. Showcase your ability to handle a dynamic work environment, work well in a team, and maintain a positive mindset. Express your excitement for the opportunity to work on a cruise ship and explore new destinations.

6. Ask Thoughtful Questions: At the end of the interview, demonstrate your interest and engagement by asking thoughtful questions about the role, the cruise ship’s itinerary, or the company culture. This shows that you have done your research and are genuinely interested in the position.

7. Follow-up with a Thank You Note: After the interview, send a personalized thank you note to the interviewer, expressing your gratitude for their time and reiterating your interest in the position. This simple gesture can leave a positive impression and reinforce your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Remember, the interview is your chance to showcase your skills, personality, and enthusiasm for working on a cruise ship. By being well-prepared, confident, and professional, you can nail your job interview and increase your chances of securing the job. In the next section, we will discuss the certifications and training required to work on a cruise ship.

Obtaining the Required Certifications and Training

Working on a cruise ship often requires specific certifications and training to ensure the safety and well-being of both the crew and the passengers. Before joining a cruise ship, it’s essential to understand and fulfill the necessary requirements. This section will guide you through the process of obtaining the required certifications and training.

1. STCW Certifications: The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) sets the minimum training, certification, and watchkeeping standards for individuals working on ships. Depending on your role, you may need to obtain specific STCW certifications, such as Basic Safety Training, Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, and Basic First Aid. Research the requirements of your desired position and ensure that you complete the necessary STCW courses from accredited training centers.

2. Medical Certifications: Working on a cruise ship also requires medical fitness. Obtain a maritime medical certificate, which includes a general health assessment and verifies that you are physically capable of working at sea. This may involve a thorough medical examination, including a vision and hearing test, as well as drug and alcohol screenings.

3. Specific Job Training: Depending on the role you are applying for, there may be additional job-specific training required. For example, if you are applying for a position in the food and beverage department, you may need to complete food handling or bartending courses. If you are interested in entertainment roles, you may need training or experience in performing arts or specific activities such as dance or music.

4. Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is typically required for most positions on cruise ships, as it is the primary language used onboard. Some roles may also require proficiency in additional languages, depending on the cruise line and the destinations they visit. Ensure that you meet the language requirements of the position you are applying for.

It’s important to note that the cost of certifications and training is typically the responsibility of the individual. Research the associated costs, as well as the time commitments required, and plan accordingly. Some cruise lines may provide reimbursement for certain certifications after a specific period of employment.

Once you have obtained the necessary certifications and training, make sure to keep them up to date. Some certifications may have expiration dates and require periodic renewals.

By ensuring that you have the required certifications and training, you not only meet the cruise line’s standards but also enhance your own professional development and increase your chances of securing a job on a cruise ship. In the next section, we will explore the hiring process and contract negotiations involved in securing a position on a cruise ship.

Understanding the Hiring Process and Contract Negotiations

The hiring process for a job on a cruise ship typically involves multiple steps and can vary depending on the cruise line. Understanding the process and being prepared can help you navigate through it successfully. Here’s a breakdown of the typical hiring process and what to expect during contract negotiations:

1. Application Submission: Start by carefully reviewing the job posting and submitting a well-crafted resume and cover letter tailored to the position and cruise line. Some cruise lines may require you to apply through their official website or a designated recruitment platform.

2. Interview Stage: If your initial application is selected, you may be invited for an interview. This can be conducted via phone, video call, or in-person, depending on the cruise line’s preference. The interview may involve questions about your work experience, relevant skills, and your ability to adapt to a cruise ship environment.

3. Background Checks: Once you have successfully passed the interview stage, the cruise line will likely conduct a background check, which may include verifying your employment history, conducting reference checks, and running a criminal background check.

4. Medical Evaluation: To ensure the health and safety of everyone onboard, you will be required to undergo a thorough medical evaluation. This may involve a complete physical examination, drug and alcohol screening, and assessment of your medical fitness to work at sea.

5. Contract Offer: If you successfully pass the background checks and medical evaluation, the cruise line may extend a contract offer. The contract will outline the terms and conditions of employment, including the duration of the contract, salary, benefits, job responsibilities, and other relevant details.

6. Contract Negotiations: It is essential to carefully review the terms of the contract and negotiate if necessary. Some aspects that can be negotiated include salary, vacation time, accommodation preferences, and specific job responsibilities. Keep in mind that negotiation is often limited, and some cruise lines may have set policies in place.

7. Signing the Contract: Once both parties have reached an agreement, you will be required to sign the contract, acknowledging your acceptance of the terms and conditions. It’s important to thoroughly read and understand the contract before signing it.

Upon signing the contract, you may be required to provide additional documentation, such as passports, visa information, and proof of certifications, depending on your nationality and the cruise line’s requirements.

It’s crucial to remember that working on a cruise ship involves long hours, dedication, and adapting to the shipboard lifestyle. Contracts typically run for several months, and some positions may have specific requirements regarding time off and vacation days.

By understanding the hiring process and being aware of contract negotiations, you can approach the application process confidently and ensure that the terms of employment align with your expectations. In the next section, we will discuss packing and preparing for life on a cruise ship.

Packing and Preparing for Life on a Cruise Ship

Preparing for life on a cruise ship involves more than just packing your bags. It requires careful planning and consideration of the unique challenges and lifestyle that come with living and working on a floating vessel. Here are some tips to help you pack and prepare for your adventure:

1. Follow Dress Code Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s dress code policies. Depending on your position, you may need to adhere to specific uniform standards. Pack appropriate attire, including formal wear for special events and professional outfits for work.

2. Essential Documents: Ensure that you have all the necessary documents, such as your passport, visas, and any required certifications or training certificates. Keep copies of important documents in a safe place, and consider storing digital versions as well.

3. Medications and Medical Supplies: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or require specific medications, ensure that you have an adequate supply to last throughout your contract. It’s also a good idea to pack a basic first aid kit with items such as band-aids, pain relievers, and motion sickness medication.

4. Personal Items: Consider the limited space available in your cabin and pack personal items that will make you feel at home. This could include photos of loved ones, favorite books, or small trinkets that bring you comfort.

5. Electronics and Entertainment: Bring any electronics you may need, such as a laptop, camera, or smartphone. Check if the cruise ship provides Wi-Fi access and if there are restrictions on the use of certain devices. Don’t forget to pack any chargers, adapters, or headphones.

6. Work Essentials: Depending on your role, you may need to bring specific tools or equipment. For example, musicians may need to bring their instruments, while technicians may need their own set of tools. Verify with the cruise line what will be provided and what you need to bring.

7. Personal Care Items: Bring toiletries and personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and grooming products. While the ship may have a store onboard, having your preferred brands and products can help you feel more comfortable.

8. Seasickness Prevention: Prepare for the possibility of seasickness. Pack over-the-counter remedies or consider alternative options, such as acupressure wristbands or ginger tablets. Consult with a healthcare professional for advice if you have severe motion sickness.

It’s important to pack efficiently and avoid overpacking, as space in your cabin will be limited. Consider the storage options available in your cabin and opt for travel-sized items when possible.

Lastly, mentally prepare yourself for life on a cruise ship. Understand that it can be a unique and challenging experience, with long hours and limited personal space. Embrace the opportunity to meet new people, explore new destinations, and develop your skills.

The Scat Cat Lounge paying homage to one of the most iconic voice actors, Scatman Crothers, will be pounding out jazz just off the atrium with cat-themed adornments to what’s promised to be an old-school jazz club.

Images and details of the new venue were posted Thursday to the Disney Parks Blog touting the addition as bringing “the groovy penthouse performance of ‘Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat’ into the real world for the first time.”

The Scat Cat Lounge is a new piano lounge themed to the 1970 Disney film

The piano, for instance, will sport paw prints from the wet paint scene from the movie while the carpeting will mirror ornate designs similar to those animated in the Parisian maison of Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, the owner of well-to-do Eva Gabor-voiced character Duchess and her kittens. Fans of the film will see their silhouettes at the entrance while the musical street feline Scat Cat’s signature horn will double as a door handle. Among the decorations will be hidden images of a certain mouse. Nope, not Mickey, but Roquefort.

As it’s adjacent to the Grand Hall, which is themed to the fictional Middle Eastern land of Agrabah from “Aladdin,” the colors and architecture will pull from a similar palate.

The drink menu will include special cocktails such as the Créme de la Créme Martini and a beverage called The Cat Drink.

Disney Cruise Line queues up old and new features for new ship Disney Treasure

The venue joins Disney Treasure spaces themed to iconic theme park rides and movies including “The Haunted Mansion,” “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “Jungle Cruise.”

Construction on the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel continues at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

The sister ship to Disney Wish that debuted in 2022 will begin sailing from Port Canaveral in December, taking on seven-night Caribbean itineraries.

A third ship in the Wish class, Disney Destiny, is due in 2025, and its home port and itineraries are expected to be revealed later this summer.

The three ships, along with the purchase of the unfinished Global Dream cruise ship that DCL acquired in 2023 and was renamed Disney Adventure, will grow the DCL fleet to eight vessels by the end of 2025.

Sitka and Juneau residents propose hard caps on cruise ships as tourism grows

tourism jobs in cruise ship

On June 18 a group of Sitka residents submitted a proposed cruise ship-limiting ballot measure to city officials for legal review.

Two days later, in Juneau, a different group of Alaskans submitted the last batch of signatures needed to put a different limit on the local ballot this fall.

With as many as 1.6 million cruise ship tourists expected to visit Southeast Alaska this year, a growing number of the region’s residents are seeking to put hard limits on the industry.

That comes even as Juneau prepares for a softer, voluntary limit that would be the first of its kind in Alaska.

In Sitka, it’s the third time that local residents have tried to put a limit on the ballot. Two prior attempts were rejected by the city’s attorney.

After those failures, organizers created a nonprofit, raised money, hired an attorney of their own, and are trying again with a new draft.

Klaudia Leccese is president of Small Town SOUL, the new nonprofit. She believes Sitka residents are fed up with overcrowding.

“I’m generally not much of a rabble-rouser. I’m a retired social worker,” she said.

This year, as many as 9,300 cruise ship passengers will visit Sitka on its busiest days, more than the town’s population of about 8,400. On 75 days, the number of tourists will be greater than half the population.

Sitka has only 14 miles of paved roads, and Leccese said the traffic caused by tour boats and tour buses has gotten out of hand. Lincoln Street, at the heart of downtown, is sometimes closed because the crowds are too large.

Tour buses run from one end of the town’s road network to the other, shuttling between the cruise ship dock and Fortress of the Bear, where animals live in captivity.

She said she and her husband frequently take their small boat down the coast for a getaway, but even there, they’re awoken by the wakes of passing tour boats.

“You go, wow, I think these wildlife and fishing charters are just a few too many,” she said.

The newly drafted Sitka proposal would limit the number of cruise ship passengers to 300,000 per year, with no more than 4,500 per day. Sitka is expected to see about 600,000 cruise tourists this year.

Small ships — those with fewer than 250 passengers — wouldn’t be included in the limit. That would protect locally run companies, including Alaskan Dream Cruises , which is based in Sitka.

Large ships wouldn’t be allowed before May 1 or after Sept. 30, and the city Assembly could shrink that window.

“Some businesses are uncomfortable with cruise ships starting in April,” Leccese said, because high school and college students — who make up much of the seasonal workforce — aren’t yet available.

Sitka officials are reviewing the proposed measure for legality and will respond by July 2, the city clerk’s office said. If the measure passes legal muster, backers would need to gather 334 signatures to place it on the local October ballot. To call a special election, 556 signatures would be needed.

In Juneau, a proposed ballot measure would install “ship-free Saturdays,” forbidding large ships from landing on that day.

Karla Hart, one of the measure’s backers, said supporters had needed 290 more signatures on their petitions after a preliminary review, and on Thursday, she drove to city hall to drop off 427 more.

If the signatures are certified, the initiative will be on Juneau’s Oct. 1 municipal ballot .

“We should be good to go,” Hart said.

In a world of high-speed living and remote jobs, earning money anywhere is possible. Travel isn’t cheap. It costs a lot of money, and working in an office does not leave much time for leisure. If you are on vacation and have seen all there is to be seen, you may look for something else to pass the time.

Remote jobs don’t have to be boring. In fact, many of them are great options for earning free or discounted travel. You just have to know how to choose which of these travel jobs is right for you.

tourism jobs in cruise ship

1. Blogging

Blogging while traveling is a great way to earn some money. Your office is wherever your laptop is, so you are never tied down to one place. This can help you travel the world with just a laptop and a bit of data, which you can always find in local cafes or restaurants . It’s even better if you do travel writing, so you can combine firsthand experience with creative writing that helps others plan their travels.

<p><span>The rise of Mukbang videos, where people eat insane amounts of food while sometimes conversing with the camera, is weirdly intriguing to many and simultaneously perplexing. While it attracts massive audiences, the fascination with watching someone devour excessive quantities of food remains a mystery. Moreover, this trend raises concerns about promoting unhealthy eating habits and overindulgence.</span></p>

2. Vlogging

Similar to blogging, video blogging, also called “ vlogging ,” is a visual form of content. You can write blogs for your website but also work as a freelancer for other people’s websites. When it comes to vlogging, however, people usually vlog for their own channels. It takes more time to succeed but can also be more rewarding monetarily. All you need is a smartphone with a nice camera, or if you want to be fancy, a laptop with some video editing software like Adobe PremierePro or DaVinci Resolve.

<p>Interestingly, it seems like millennials have a better understanding of technology. Gen Z grew up with tech, but millennials have more experience with the inner workings, like troubleshooting a computer or building an HTML code. I would think the opposite would be true, but tech has become too easy for Gen Z in some ways.</p>

3. Video Commercials

This one is both fun and rewarding. If you have a smartphone with a decent camera and invest in an excellent DJI drone, you can earn some nice money on your travels. Combine this with an investment in a decent laptop and a video editing course, and you have a recipe for success. When I was on vacation in Corfu , I discovered an opportunity with their beautiful beachfront Tavernas. I packed my drone, visited a few of them on foot, and offered them my services. I scored two jobs for filming a video ad and one logo redesign job, which made me a nice profit for less than a full day of work.

4. Singing and Playing an Instrument

Singing or playing an instrument is another excellent way to earn some surprisingly good money. If you are a good singer and can play an instrument, you can always play in the city center or other popular spots. Many great talents have been discovered performing in public this way. You can also offer your skills to local restaurants or lounges if they are in need of live music or other entertainment.

<p>If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. <em>Pro tip</em>: You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.</p>

5. Haircuts for Tips

If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. Pro tip : You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.

<p><span>In a tabloid or on a gossip website, if a celebrity looks to be posing in a staged photo, they most certainly are. Stars view it as a cooperative effort that benefits all parties, and fans frequently aren’t aware that the “candid” photos were expertly staged before being made public.</span></p>

6. Exposure for Businesses

This travel job is for those with a well-developed online business. If you already have a travel blog , you can always ask restaurant owners, bar owners, hotels, and others who provide services in tourism if they would like to collaborate on a promotion on your website. The business will get exposure to your audience, and you can negotiate payment or exchanges for that promotion, like a one-night hotel stay or a free meal.

<p>This unique locale lets guests taste wine from three family-owned micro-wineries: Blacksmith Cellars, Sunset Cellars, and King Andrew Vineyard. Staff at the tasting room are wine producers and grape growers, providing expert knowledge on the local wines and the Suisun Valley wine region. The tasting list changes weekly. And guess what — you can bring picnics or snacks (but no outside drinks). Stop by La Barista Espresso for deli sandwiches on your way to the <a href="https://suisunvalleywinecoop.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Suisun Valley Wine Co-op</a>.</p><ul> <li><strong>Blacksmith Cellars:</strong> Founded in 2003, winemaker Matt Smith crafts complex wines, distinctive varietal-driven and blended wines.</li> <li><strong>Sunset Cellars:</strong> Starting in 1997 in the garage of the Inner Sunset neighborhood in <a href="https://wealthofgeeks.com/kid-friendly-things-to-do-in-san-francisco/">San Francisco</a>, Sunset Cellars has a minimalist winemaking style and respects the grower’s efforts in the vineyards.</li> <li><strong>King Andrew Vineyard:</strong> After growing grapes in their own vineyard, Roger King and his wife Carol brought their bottled wine from small lot production to the winery. The fresh and vibrant wines are bottled with limited intervention.</li> </ul><p>Reservations are not required, but they are recommended.</p>

7. Bartending

A good barista is always a much-needed part of the crew. If you know how to mix drinks or make a killer espresso, you can always offer your services to nightclubs or cafes and earn a decent wage, plus tips.

8. Temporary Tattoos or Hair Styling

Unlike the classic tattoo industry, where laws and regulations can tie up employment approval, temporary tattoos can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not fall under any laws and regulations. There is a low risk of infection with temporary tattoos or paints, unlike classic tattoos that are created by piercing the skin. Hair braiding or wrapping is popular at beach destinations and can also be done anytime, anywhere.

9. Working on a Cruise Ship

Working on a cruise ship is more permanent, but it still fits within the scope of travel jobs. There are numerous jobs that you can do on a cruise ship, and each of those offers some nice wages. Understandably, a captain makes much more than a cabin steward, but all employees receive benefits and gratuity. You can use the time between shifts to discover beautiful cities wherever you stop.

<p>Discussions about places to visit in Montenegro tend to begin with Kotor, and it is easy to see why. Kotor packs plenty into its relatively small borders, with a proud maritime history allied to modern cafes, restaurants, and bars, plus some of the most alluring churches in this part of the world. Stop for a romantic courtyard lunch at Pržun before taking the arduous walk up to the fortress walls, where the ultimate view of the Bay of Kotor awaits.</p>

Amsterdam to halve cruise ship numbers from 2026.

Amsterdam is set to halve the number of cruise ships as part of an ongoing effort to tackle overtourism and improve residents’ quality of life.

eCard

Starting from 2026, local authorities have announced only a maximum of 100 cruise ships will be able to dock annually, with plans to permanently relocate the cruise terminal outside of the city centre by 2035.

“We want Amsterdam to be clean, liveable and sustainable,” the council said on Thursday (27 June). “Sea cruises are polluting and cause crowds and emissions in the city.”

Amsterdam’s passenger terminal will also see its berths go down from two to one “immediately” while cruise ships will be required to use shore power from 2027.

According to the council, which has already implemented a series of measures to curb overtourism , the restrictions will create an economic loss for the city, as many cruise ships will likely call at other nearby ports such as Rotterdam.

“The restriction will cause the expenditure of sea cruise passengers and shipping companies in Amsterdam to decrease,” authorities added.

“The income of the municipality will also decrease because less tourist tax is collected and the municipality earns less as a shareholder of the port authority.”

Commenting on the announcement, a Clia spokesperson said: “Today’s announcement is a great example of the cruise industry’s long-standing partnership with the Port of Amsterdam and the direct outcome of our collaborative discussions on the relocation of the passenger terminal outside the city centre, which started back in 2016.

“Amsterdam is and will remain a popular cruise destination, and cruise tourism will continue delivering important economic benefits to the city – to the tune of around €105 million annually.

“That economic contribution is particularly significant when you consider that of the more than 21 million visitors to Amsterdam each year, only around 1% arrive by cruise ship.

“It’s not accurate to say it is unexpected – this is part of a collaborative process that’s been ongoing for some time.”

Kremlin

Moscow : The first day is arrival day. You are welcome on board! Check in starts at 14:00 (2.00 PM), but you may arrive earlier or later on that day. If you order a transfer you will be met at the airport or train station by one of our drivers and taken by a comfortable car to the river port where you will board your cruise ship (transfer is OPTIONAL).

Over the next few days you will have a chance to explore Moscow and learn about its riveting history. You will be taken on a city tour where you will see Moscow's most interesting sights and learn about this amazing city's past and present. You will also have a chance to do some light shopping and there will be time to relax aboard the ship in the evenings. One of the highlights of your time in Moscow is a visit to Red Square  and the Kremlin . You will also visit one of the Kremlin's famous cathedrals. The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site had been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

Uglich : You will be taken to the walking city tour with visit to Kremlin , the Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood and the Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy, Uglich is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John´s Church rising up on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. It was founded in the 1010 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise and is one of the ancient Russian cities making up the Golden Ring . It was destroyed by the Tatars in the 13th and 14th centuries but then restored and rebuilt and by the 17th century it had become Russia's second largest city after Moscow and an important cultural and political center. Today, Yaroslavl retains many noteworthy monuments of its colorful past. Of special interest is the magnificent 13th century Spassky Monastery ensemble, a group of majestic 17th century cathedrals, an elegant rotunda and remnants of an ancient trading center. The churches of St. Nicholas and Elijah the Prophet have some of the Golden Ring's most impressive frescoes.

Goritsy : You'll tour the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery and Museum of Icons .

Goritsy is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake, Lake Onega and arrive on the island of Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

Fire breaks out on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, cruise ship loses power

tourism jobs in cruise ship

A fire broke out on Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship on Tuesday.

The ship also experienced a brief loss of power, according to Nathaniel Derrenbacher, a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group . The ship was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, at the time.

There were no injuries and the small fire – which was isolated to a crew area – was quickly extinguished. The ship’s backup power was activated immediately, and the main power systems were restored.

Derrenbacher did not have additional information on where the fire occurred or how long the power outage lasted.

The vessel’s itinerary was not impacted. Icon, the biggest cruise ship in the world , is currently sailing a week-long Western Caribbean cruise that departed from Miami, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The ship is scheduled to visit Cozumel on Wednesday.

The news comes after a fire occurred in the exhaust funnel of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Freedom ship in March, the second such fire on the vessel in less than two years.

These Cruise Ship Cabins Are the Best to Avoid Seasickness, According to a Captain

Looking to score the best room on your next cruise? This is it.

Heading out on your first cruise? Take this extremely helpful advice: Book a cabin in the center of the ship, especially if you're traveling through rocky waters.

While every room on a cruise is a great one — because it means you're setting sail — there are rooms that are better than others when it comes to avoiding seasickness.

"Cabins toward the center of the ship on lower decks are the best if you can get them," Captain Alessandro Genzo, who is celebrating his 20th year working on Princess cruise ships, told journalists aboard the Discovery Princess on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska.

As Genzo noted, this section of the ship tends to rock the least when the waters get rough. And really, he's the guy to trust. Before joining Princess, Genzo studied at one of the oldest nautical schools in Europe and served in the Italian Navy, so he knows the motion of the ocean all too well.

But he's not the only expert offering this sage advice. "The most coveted space on a cruise ship is midship, which is the middle of the ship going from the bow to the stern," Don Bucolo, the co-founder of Eat Sleep Cruise , shared with Travel + Leisure . "This is where travelers are less likely to feel the motion of the ocean. Thus, cruisers concerned about getting seasick should consider booking a cabin midship on a middle deck."

However, there is a major caveat to consider. "These tend to be the most expensive [cabins] and book up fast. That is why we always suggest booking at least six to eight months in advance to ensure the best cabin selection," Bucolo added.

There are, of course, some other factors to take into account, including any mobility issues that may make getting around a ship more difficult. In this case, Bucolo suggests picking a stateroom near an elevator so you can fully enjoy the experience.

And, if you're looking to get some serious shut-eye on this trip, Mark Trim, the founder of Complex Travel Group, says it's key to check the deck plans for your ship and stay as far away from the bars or entertainment center as possible.

"Our number one tip is to check the deck plan both below and, importantly, above your cabin. Is there a bar, theatre, or restaurant directly above? This could result in noise disturbances late into the night. The sound of a moving chair is extremely frustrating to hear in your cabin, as is any thundering bass from a nightclub or late-night venue," Trim said. "Looking at a 3D view of the cruise ship and locating any of these potential issues in advance is ideal."

Want a great view? Both experts suggest booking a room with a veranda or a balcony — especially if this is your first sailing.

"We suggest aft-facing verandas," Bucolo said. "These veranda balcony cabins tend to offer more interior space. But the big draw is the oversized balconies that face outwards, overlooking the back of the ship."

"We'd recommend that it's best to start with a balcony/veranda cabin for any new cruisers and then see how you feel about not having a window to open," Trim added. "An inside cabin can be great for some who don't mind not having a view, especially if you're doing a cruise where the sun may not set to avoid the sun coming in around the curtains." Travelers cruising to Antarctica or the Arctic Circle during their respective summer seasons may experience 24-hour sunlight.

Still not sure you've got the best room? As our experts stated, it could be a good idea for first-timers to book through a travel advisor who will likely know the schematics of every cruise ship like it's their own home and can ensure a smooth sail ahead.
