Amble Marina

Amble Northumberland

The ‘friendliest port’.

Amble prides itself on being the ‘friendliest port in England’, and its annual puffin festival, brightly coloured beach huts and the wooden retail pods of Amble Harbour Village are just a few of its quirks. Whether you are looking for a fun day out to explore with your family or a relaxing trip for your retirement , Amble has so much to offer. A short walk through the clinking halyard of Amble’s award-winning marina will take you to the harbour’s wooden pods, which sell everything from cheese to charm bracelets, as well as its sea-front pathway where sweet treats and salty fish and chips are en-route. The Northumberland Seafood Centre located at the Amble Harbour Village sources and sells local seafood . They also have a lobster hatchery with an interactive and informative visitor centre. Boutique ice cream makers and Golden Fork winner for best speciality food , Spurelli sits on the waterfront, along with exquisite seafood restaurant The Old Boathouse. The Fish Shack is another of the harbour’s highlights, where you can savour fresh fish in a rustic wooden hut beneath a fish net and fairy light-strewn ceiling. Watersports enthusiasts should head for the Coquet Shorebase Trust , which offers a cascade of aquatic fun, from sailing and kayaking to power boating and raft building. Clockwatching isn’t something we would usually recommend, but a time check with the Amble Sundial against the largest gnomon or indicator in Europe is not to be missed.  Adorably clumsy puffins, lolloping seals and an array of other wildlife and seabirds dwell on Amble’s coastline and the Puffin Cruise that sails from Amble harbour is not to be missed. Hop on board to spot the 36,000-bird colony nesting on Coquet Island , an RSPB seabird sanctuary a mile off the coast. Head into Amble’s small town centre for a High Street crammed with cosy cafes , restaurants and traditional pubs perfect for tasting local tipples . The mouth-watering scent of the local butchers can be enjoyed as you wander along the highstreet, as well as the sweet smell of sticky pastries from the bakers. Amble shops are perfect for finding that local Northumbrian gift to take home for a friend or a keepsake of your stay in Northumberland. Lace up your walking shoes to enjoy a walk (Approximately 6 mile circular walk) from Amble to Warkworth and visit Warkworth Castle and Hermitage, once home to the Percy family who also owned nearby Alnwick Castle . The fascinating cross-shaped keep, first built over 600 years ago remains largely intact. If you are travelling to Amble by car there are several car parks making parking in Amble easy. For visiting Amble Harbour village head to the car park on Turner Street. For a car free day Arriva buses operate regular services to and from Amble.

Amble Guide

Your guide to amble.

The Town of Amble is situated on the Northumberland coast, it is at the mouth of the River Coquet, just a mile from Warkworth. Amble was built on a point of land that sticks out from the main run of the coast, so offers excellent views of the coastline. The old spelling for Amble is thought to be Annebelle, meaning Anna's Promontory. Amble and the surrounding area has been populated for many centuries. Ancient British foundations have been found here, as well as Roman coins, signifying occupation during different periods of time.

Amble is commonly known as 'the friendliest port' and gained the nickname in the 1930's when Amble Council sent the RMS Mauretania a message on it's last voyage to the the wreckers yard 'Still the finest ship on the seas' and they replied with greetings 'to the last and friendliest port in England'. The Town is now a popular place for holidays with it's pleasant harbour, marina, proximity to beautiful beaches and many facilities it's easy to see why.

Click Here for our interactive Town Centre Map showing all the attractions and town amenities, as well as parking, travel information and recommended viewing points.

Getting There

By far the easiest way to visit Amble is by car. It is approximately 15 miles from Morpeth and 9 miles from Alnwick, right on the coast. There is free public parking in the area just before the harbour and Pay and Display parking at the harbour itself. All parking is clearly marked on our interactive map of Amble. Postcode for your SatNav: NE65 0DQ

Amble is a stop on the Arriva "Newcastle - Morpeth - Amble - Alnwick - The Coast - Berwick" which is the service between Newcastle and Berwick on their X18 route (see link below for more information). Amble's Attractions and Things To Do Many of the things to do in Amble are based in the very thing that almost completely surrounds it - water. Watersports, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing are all extremely popular. There are certainly excellent facilities available including the Marina, Harbour, Angling Centre and many clubs. The Coquet Island is just a mile off the coast and is an RSPB designated site of special scientific interest. It is also home to some 35,000 nesting birds in summer and a seal colony over 600 strong. the wildlife run daily throughout the summer and leave from the harbour.

Restaurants, Pubs and Cafes - Eating Out In Amble

As you would expect from a fishing Town, one of the main reasons to come to Amble for food is the fresh seafood. The Fish and Chip shops all offer some of the tastiest fish you'll find anywhere on the coast and there's even an Italian restaurant that celebrates the local Seafood. It's not all about the fish though, there are some excellent examples of other types of cuisine on offer including a Boutique Icecream parlour and an excellent Chinese Takeaway, how's that for variety! Whatever kind of food you like and whatever your budget,

Amble has something to offer. Explore your guide to Places to Eat and Drink in Amble...

Accommodation Amble has an excellent choice when it comes to accommodation. There are family run B&B's and a large number of self catering properties. For a complete listing of places to stay visit our Accommodation in Amble Page .

Food Shopping and Supermarkets

Amble offers a good range of small shops including a Tesco express, Heron and Co-op. There are also two independent butchers and two bakers, all of which are located on Queen Street. Being a Harbour Town it would also be a crime not to have fresh fish shops, of which there are two, located around the harbour. There is an excellent Sunday market held here throughout the year, granted it is much larger in the summer months, but there is always a core of traders there. The meat and fresh fish are fantastic, as would be expected.

Amble's Amenities

There is a Tourist Information Centre located near the harbour and is well signposted from outside of the Town. The Centre is open in the busy season, generally from Easter through to the end of October and is closed in winter. Just next to the Tourist Information Centre you will also find public toilets. Amble's Parish Church is St Cuthbert's and is located in the centre of Amble on Church Street.

Amble is a sleepy coastal town on Britain’s north Northumberland coast. It is famed for its breathtaking scenery, wildlife, small fishing boats, independent shops and history.

Understand [ edit ]

During the 19th century, Amble developed as a port serving the coal mines of neighbouring Northumbrian villages. Fishing also played its part in the economy of the town, and many locals are still related to the original fishing families, although the fleet is now much reduced.

Nowadays, visitors hire boats out of the harbour for fishing expeditions or take a Puffin Cruise to see the famous Roseate terns, puffins and seals on RSPB-maintained Coquet Island, about a mile offshore. The town is also home to a beautiful Marina which welcomes visitors from all around the UK, as well as from across the North Sea.

Amble is a haven for bird watchers, walkers, cyclists and those seeking a breath of fresh air. The town is a stone’s throw from medieval castles, nature reserves, long golden beaches and is gateway to the majestic hills of Coquetdale, historic town of Alnwick and all the wide open splendour Northumberland can offer.

The town is family and dog friendly, and if the weather is inclement, there is a large indoor play centre for children. There is a luxury swimming pool, sauna and gym facilities at The Granary Leisure Complex and a funfair and indoor amusement arcade.

Also known as "Amble By The Sea" and "The Friendliest Port" there are plenty of comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation, cosy holiday cottages, good quality restaurants, and welcoming bars and cafés.

Get in [ edit ]

Amble is easily reached by car and lies on the A1068 Coastal Route, approximately 10 miles north of Morpeth and 10 miles south of Alnwick. The nearest train station is at Alnmouth, around 20 mins away. The Marina can even accommodate your yacht.

By bus [ edit ]

Amble is served by the Arriva X18 from Newcastle upon Tyne , Alnmouth , Alnwick , Seahouses and Berwick-upon-Tweed . The bus runs about once per hour. An alternative route is the X20 service which is also every hour and runs from Newcastle via Ashington and Druridge Bay. Both of these serve Alnmouth station; if you are travelling by train to Alnmouth you can buy a "PlusBus" ticket which covers your journey to Amble.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The town is most accessible by foot, but pedal bike hire is available. Amble is home to two Sustrans cycle routes; the National Route 1 and the Coast and Castles cycle route.

There is also a car park in Coquet Street which is owned by Amble Marina. There is a pay and display car park at the Little Shore which is owned by Warkworth Harbour Commissioners.

Arriva buses operate an hourly service, north to Alnwick and beyond, south to Morpeth and Newcastle (X18). There is also a bus to Widdrington and Ashington (20).

Travelsure runs an hourly daytime service to Alnwick via Shilbottle (472).

Amble, Northumberland travel guide and Amble information

Photo of Amble

Visit Amble

Amble (aka amble-by-the-Sea) is a town situated on the mouth of the River Coquet in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, south of Alnmouth  in the county of Northumberland.

Historically an industrial town based around the coal export industrythat developed during the 19th century, Amble is now focussed predominantly on a much reduced fishing industry and tourism focussed around a new marina and the attractions of the nearby beaches and scenery.

Amble itself contains a good selection of traditional stone buildings, some bearing witness to the wealth the town enjoyed in the 19th century, with some earlier remains also visible such as the ruin of a 15th century manor house and part of an early brickworks. Visit the Amble Visitor Information Centre for details of the Town Trail that will ensure you see the highlights - and better appreciate them in the context of the history of the town

The town square is centred around a new, modernist sundial* and memorial gardens joins the two parts of the town - the seafront and the traditional village. There is also a variety of shops and pubs in the town.

*The sundial is said to have one of the biggest gnomon in Europe - until now I had no idea the 'blade' of a sundial was called a gnomon...

The coast around Amble offers scenic walks in both directions: towards Warkworth  and castle to the north-west and with views across to Coquet Island (a protected RSPB Nature Reserve) towards the south-east.

The coast here is well known for the wide range of birdlife it enjoys - bring your binoculars, and also visit the Northumberland Seabird Centre in the harbour to see 'live and direct' feeds of bird activity on Coquet Island, perhaps before taking one of the boat trips from the harbour to get a closer look.

You can find more local travel ideas in the Northumberland Coast guide and the Northumberland guide .

Where Is Amble Morpeth

Situated on the Northumberland coast, at the mouth of the River Croquet, Amble Morpeth is a popular Northeast seaside town. Technically it is just outside of the Northumberland Coast Area of National Beauty, but it is still a really pretty town with lots of nature.

Because it is one of the larger towns along the Northumberland coast it makes an excellent base for exploring this area of England.

Best Time Of Year To Visit

It’s England, so obviously the best time of year to visit weather wise is over the summer months (June – August). But it’s not the kind of British seaside town that completely closes down over winter months so you can visit at any time of year.

What To Do In Amble

Amble harbour village.

Despite being a working harbour, there’s plenty of less industrial parts to Amble harbour. In particular there’s the lovely Amble Harbour Village. Created in 2015, its 15 retail pods are brimming with all sorts of goodies from independent local businesses.

Amble Harbour Village

There’s everything from gin and cheese to trinkets and jewellery so it’s a great place to grab a couple of souvenirs. Opening times vary but most shops are open everyday from April to October at least between 11am – 3pm.

Lobster Hatchery

Within Amble Harbour Village you’ll also find the Northumberland Seafood Centre and Hatchery . Working to boost the local lobster population, the hatchery nurtures newborn larvae into juvenile lobsters which are released back into the sea.

It’s a little known statistic that female lobsters can carry up to 20,000 eggs under their bodies for over 9 months and after all that effort only one egg will survive to adulthood. Crazy huh?!

They are aiming to help both crabs and langoustine in the future. But for now at this popular Amble tourist attraction it’s just baby lobsters that you can see up close. They also sell an ever changing selection of locally caught fish and seafood if you fancy getting your cook on.

Croquet Island Puffins

One of the must things to do in Amble Northumberland, certainly between March and July is take a boat trip out to nearby Croquet Island. Just a mile off the Northumberland coast, this vibrant sanctuary is an important nesting site for puffins and other endangered seabirds.

Puffin Cruises Amble

For this reason you can’t actually step onto the island. But boat tours will take you around the perimeter where you can also see the resident seal colony. They run year round, weather pending, and you can find sailing times and availability here .

Spurreli Icecream

The absolute best icecream around for miles. You cannot visit Amble and not stuff your face with at least one double waffle cone of deliciousness during your stay. The flavours at Spurreli are ever rotating, but solid staples are rum and raisin, salted caramel and mint choc chip.

Spurreli Icecream Amble

Fish & Chips

Likewise you absolutely can’t visit the British seaside without getting some fish and chips. Now that would be a crime! There are of course various fish and chip shops in Amble Northumberland, but the best one is Harbour Fish Bar on Broomhill Street.

best fish and chips Amble

It makes for a seriously pleasant evening sat on one of the benches by the harbour tucking into a battered supper. Just watch out for the seagulls circling overhead and edging ever closer as you round off your last few chips.

Brewis Beer Co

A short walk out of town is one of the more up and coming things to do in Amble, Brewis taproom . Located on Croquet Enterprise industrial park, the surroundings aren’t much to look at. But the bar is lovely and craft beer brewed on site is seriously excellent.

Brewis taproom

They often have street food trucks on site with grub that’s a perfect pairing for the beer. You can find out the lowdown and opening hours over on their Instagram. The place has a really friendly vibe with both kids and dogs made to feel welcome. We really loved it here.

Sunday Market

Every Sunday from 10am – 4pm along the harbour front you’ll find a combination of fresh produce and homeware market stalls. It’s much more of a local affair than a tourist attraction with most people here to literally do their food shopping.

So if you’re staying in self catering accommodation and cooking you’ll be in your element. There’s fishmongers, butchers, bakers, and plenty of fresh fruit and veg. But if you do need a vacuum cleaner or a new set of towels you can pick them up too!

Queen Street Shopping

If you like your shopping, another item to add to your things to do in Amble Northumberland list is this. Queen Street in Amble prides itself on its independent shops which offer everything from flowers and books to electrical goods and haberdashery.

Queen Street Amble

Amble Links

At first glance it’s easy to overlook that Amble has a proper beach, but a short walk south along the coast will bring you to some beautiful wild sandy beaches. Some stretches of the Amble Links beaches also have rock pools exposed at low tide which are great for kids.

If you carry on a little further down the coast you’ll come to Low Hauxley beach. Where, if you catch the tide right, you may be able to see the remains of a 7000 year old submerged forest. This was part of Doggerland, a stretch of land that once connected Britain to Europe.

There’s also public car parks along the road if you’d prefer to drive.

Amble Links Beach

Northside Surf

This stand up paddle boarding and surf school has a reputation for being the friendliest around. They offer lessons all year round on several beautiful beaches & rivers along the Northumberland coast. The River Croquet route through Warkworth is particularly popular.

Amble Marina & Harbour

Having a wander along the harbour pier and Amble Marina is a great addition for your things to do in Amble Northumberland itinerary. There’s usually lots of seabirds and if you get lucky you might witness a fisherman landing his catch of the day.

Amble Harbour

There’s also the open grasslands of Amble Braid which is a very picturesque spot to enjoy a picnic while watching the wading birds and waterfowl in the Coquet Estuary.

If you fancy a bit of a further walk, the picturesque town of Walkworth is just half an hour or so away. From Amble Marina just follow the bank of the River Croquet. It’s not a big place, just a few shops and a few pubs. But there’s an impressive castle and a gorgeous beach too.
