WORLD’S MOST FASCINATING BIRD RESERVE

The history of Bharatpur dates back to 5th century BC, when the Matsya kingdom flourished here. The Matsyas were allies of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata war. Legends say that the origin of the name Bharatpur is traced to Bharat, younger brother of Lord Ram. Laxman, the other brother, was given the most prestigious position as that of the family deity of the ruling family of Bharatpur. His name also appears in the state seals and coat-of-arms. In the early 18th century, Maharaja Suraj Mal captured the fort of Bharatpur by vanquishing Khemkaran, the rival chieftain and laid the foundation for Bharatpur. The valiant Maharaja was very keen to expand the cities and is credited with building the numerous forts and palaces that dot the kingdom, including the Pleasure Palace Complex at Deeg. Bharatpur is also home to one of the world's best-known bird watching destinations, Keoladeo Ghana National Park (KNP). 250 years ago, the then ruler built embankments that allowed flooding of this land, turning it into a marsh. Named after the dense jungle that surrounded an old Shiva Temple, this 29 square kilometre man-made wetland is renowned for migratory birds – ducks, geese, waders, raptors, flycatchers and more. In winter, avid birders and ornithologists flock to the park to observe and study the feathered beauties. With more than 370 recorded species, KNP used to also host the Siberian crane. It is a World Heritage Site.

BHARATPUR PALACE AND MUSEUM

Located within the premises of the Bharatpur Palace is Kamra Khas, a museum that contains a vast number of antiques, over 581 stone sculptures, 861 local art and craft wares and ancient scriptures that depict the art and culture typical of Bharatpur. The palace itself was built in stages by various Maharajas and is a fine fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The various apartments in the palace have a variety of richly patterned floor tiles decorated with exquisite designs.

GANGA MANDIR

The Ganga Mandir, which resides in the heart of the city of Bharatpur is one of the most beautiful temples in Rajasthan. In it lies the magnificent deity of Ganga Maharaj made of pristine white marble. Maharaja Balwant Singh started constructing this temple in the mid-19th century. However, he had a very unique request that required all the affluent inhabitants of the city to donate one month’s pay to help towards the temple’s creation.

LAXMAN MANDIR

This temple is dedicated to Laxman, brother of Lord Rama, and is famous for its typical Rajasthani style of architecture and beautiful pink stonework. Visitors will enjoy the intricate carvings of flowers and birds on doorways, ceilings, pillars, walls and arches.

Every year, thousands of migratory waterfowl birds such as green sandpiper and cranes visit the park during winter. It was created in mid 18th century as a small reservoir located 5 kilometres to the southeast of Bharatpur. The construction of the Ajan Bund (dam) and the subsequent flooding of this natural depression led to one of the world’s most fascinating and spectacular bird reserves. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is considered to be one of the richest bird areas in the world today.

LOHAGARH FORT

True to its name, Lohagarh Fort has withstood many attacks by the British, but was ultimately captured by Arthur Wellesley. Where Lohagarh Fort differs from others is that it is not flamboyant, but radiates an aura of rugged strength. The fort is surrounded by a moat which used to be filled with water to keep enemies out. Interesting monuments inside the fort are Kothi Khas, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal and Kishori Mahal. Raja Suraj Mal built Jawahar Bhurj and Fateh Bhurj to commemorate victories over the Mughals and the British.

Deeg is a beautiful garden town situated north of Bharatpur. It has many embellished palaces that add to the beauty of the place. Known for its forts, palaces, gardens and fountains, the highlight of Deeg is an impressive fort surrounded by moats and gateways. It was built by Raja Suraj Mal and stands over a slightly elevated point. Although the interiors are almost in ruins, the watch tower containing a gun still maintains watch over the city.

BAND BARETHA

Band Baretha is an old wildlife reserve of the rulers of Bharatpur, currently under the administration of the Forest Department. The construction of the dam on Kakund River was started by Maharaj Jaswant Singh in 1866 AD and completed by Maharaj Ram Singh in 1897 AD. The palace inside the reserve was built by Maharaj Kishan Singh and is the private property of the Bharatpur royal family. Band Baretha is a bird watcher’s paradise because of over 200 species of birds, including the elusive Black Bittern.

The locals also know Kaman as Kamaban. This old town is located at the north of Bharatpur and is a part of the Brij area where Lord Krishna spent his early years. It is a place of pilgrimage and is annually visited by a large number of Vaishnavs in the month of Bhadhva as a part of the Banyatara. The ruins of a temple / mosque consisting of 84 pillars named Chaurasi Khamba are the main attraction.

BRAJ HOLI FESTIVAL

The Braj festival in Rajasthan is held every year for two days in the Shukla Paksha of the Phalgun month, a few days prior to Holi. This festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna who is believed to have spent a considerable amount of time in a region called Braj in Rajasthan. This festival not only replicates the spirit of Holi but also impersonates the timeless love of Radha and Krishna. The highlight of this festival is the Raslila dance performed with great zest and unity. The entire town is painted and no one is spared from being splashed with colours.

9. Dholpur Palace

The beautiful Dholpur Palace, also popular as Raj Niwas Palace, is one of the top locations to visit in Bharatpur. It was constructed of red sandstone in the early nineteenth century. The complicated architecture gives the structure depth and purpose and makes it attractive.

It’s a one-of-a-kind experience to walk through the red sandstone hallways. You can spend an hour here to pass the time during your visit to Bharatpur. The Dholpur Palace is magnificent in the evening when the setting sun imparts a magical character.

10. Gopal Bhawan

Gopal Bhavan was built in 1760 and is an elegantly crafted structure. At the building’s entrance, there is a lovely garden. Gopal Sagar is located in the back of the building and is bordered by two small mandapas, Sawan and Bhadon. A raised terrace with a marble arch sits in front of the garden.

The Jat king Maharaja Surajmal brought this arch from the Mughals as a battle symbol and set it on a pedestal. Gopal Bhavan has a banquet facility on its premises. A rare collection of antiques, souvenirs, and Victorian furniture may be found in this area. A little submerged tank surrounded by lovely fountains can be seen from the top of the room.

11. Band Bartha

The Bandh Baretha Wildlife Reserve is an old wildlife reserve. It is 65 kilometers away from the city of Bharatpur. In this reserve, tourists can see panthers, chitals, sambars, blue bulls, wild boars, and brocks, among other amazing animal species. Apart from that, over 200 different bird species are available in the wildlife reserve.

In this reserve, there is a dam built across the river Kakund. Maharaja Jaswant Singh initiated the construction of this place in 1866. However, during Maharaja Ram Singh’s reign, the dam’s construction was completed in 1897-1888. The reserve also features a historic place belonging to the Bharatpur royal family.

12. Chabad Devi Temple

Chabad Devi Temple is a beautiful tourist attraction in Bharatpur. The temple manifests the region’s local customs, traditions, culture, and history. The place is rarely crowded; thus, you can immerse yourself in isolation while regaining its vitality. It’s a fantastic experience to visit the temple early in the morning.

13. Seetharama Temple

The Seetharama Temple is modest but beautiful. It’s a lovely spot to recharge your energies with some therapeutic quiet. This temple, located deep within the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a delightful site near nature’s richness.

The only things that may interrupt your meditations in the shrine are the sounds of birds and monkeys. Nearby, there is another temple devoted to Lord Shiva. According to legend, the lingam in the temple came from the soil 300 years ago, making it a particularly sacred location.

Even though few people are familiar with the Kaman subdivision of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, religious people, particularly Vaishnavas, consider it a spiritually significant location. Lord Krishna spent his boyhood at Braj Bhoomi, and some of Kaman appears to be from there. Because of the abundance of tulsi plants in Kaman, it is also known as Aadi Vrindavan.

A particular forest journey is held in the month of Bhadon, where Vaishnavas from around the country participate. During the rainy season, a fair named Parikrama Mela is also held in the Eagle Palace here.

1. winter festival.

Places to Visit in Bharatpur, Chitwan

1. meghauli.

Chitwan National Park and the beautiful tourist city of Meghauli, surrounded by two major rivers, Rapti and Narayani, are the primary hubs for jungle safari in Nepal. Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge serves as the gateway to this adventure, initiating jungle safaris. Meghauli, situated 25 kilometers west from Bharatpur Chitrasen Municipality to Ward No. 27, holds significant importance in the development of eco-tourism. With four community forests, rare sightings of tigers, rhinoceroses, and deer, along with the construction of a rhino park, an animal rescue center, Tharu cultural museum, Pyara Jungle Camp, mountain and indigenous cultural experiences, and attractions like elephant rides, canoeing, machan stays, bird watching, and jeep safaris make it a major tourist destination.

Meghauli, renowned worldwide as the first location for elephant polo, offers easy accessibility through air, land, and water routes. Nearby attractions include Chitwan National Park, Golaghat, and Bhojbaba. Situated at an altitude ranging from sea level to 225 meters, Meghauli provides comfortable accommodations from homestays to well-equipped hotels.

2. Patihani

In Kamalpokhari, located in Bharatpur Metro Ward No. 22 along the Bharatpur-Kasara road, various enchanting species of lotus flowers provide tourists with abundant joy. Attractions such as the Gohi Breeding Center, Vikram Baba, Nikunj, and community forests are nearby. The establishment of well-equipped hotels in this area allows both domestic and international tourists to experience natural and cultural delights. An umbrella tower constructed in the tourism area, listed as the 100th destination by the Government of Nepal, adds further allure to the region. The construction of the umbrella street includes approximately 450 fiber umbrellas, and tourists can enjoy a 120-meter walk from the shade area. With viewpoints, selfie gates, restaurants, restrooms, parking, accommodations, and other services available, tourists experience delightful moments in the natural environment of this destination.

3. Devghat dham

Devghat Dham, situated 6 kilometers north of Bharatpur, at the confluence of Trishuli and Kaligandaki rivers, is a sacred place famous for its religious significance. Located at an elevation ranging from 200 meters to 575 meters above sea level, Devghat is considered an excellent area for peace and spiritual upliftment. In the direction of Chitwan and Tanahu districts, there are various religious sites such as the Gaushala Ashram, Chakreshwar Shila, Sita Cave, Vashisht Cave, Harihar Temple, Mahesh Sannyas Ashram, Ram Temple, Yagyashala, Kathstupa, Siddhi Ganesh, Gopidham, Suryakund, and Pashupatinath. Esteemed personalities like Vashishta Rishi, King Mani Mukund Sen, Pratap Shah, Lekhnath Paudyal, and Siddha Galeshwar Baba are believed to have attained enlightenment through meditation in this holy land, as mentioned in the Himalaya Mahatmya and Mahadev Shankar’s association with his companions in this region.

4. Gyaneshwar Block

Gyanaeshwar Block, located about 10 kilometers west of Bharatpur, encompasses four community forests – Gyanaeshwar , Seti Devi, Majhuwa, and Siddhiganesh. Situated by the banks of the Narayani River, this picturesque area provides tourists with clean and serene surroundings for entertainment. With activities like rafting, jungle walks, jeep drives, machan stays, picnic spots, and visits to the wildlife rescue center, where various species of protected animals like deer, monkeys, bears, wild boars, ostriches, and pythons, along with a small aviary showcasing local culture, are the main attractions. This area, also developing as an open aviary, offers rare opportunities to observe various species of wild animals like the one-horned rhinoceros, deer, peacocks, vultures, etc. Close to this, at the pilgrimage site of Shivaghat, stands the Shiv Temple established by King Mukund Sen of Palpa, where temples dedicated to Pashupatinath, Mahadev, and Sita-Ram are also present. Special celebrations, especially during Mahashivaratri, attract devotees to this place.

5. Twenty thousand lakes (Bish Hajari Taal)

Located 9 kilometers northeast from Bharatpur Chaubisakothi, Bis Hazar Tal (Twenty Thousand Ponds) was constructed due to the canal brought from Eastern Chitwan. Named after the numerous ponds created from the dam, most of which are more than twenty thousand feet deep, Bis Hazar Tal is listed as a World Ramsar Site, rich in biodiversity.

Jeep safaris from Sauraha’s Tikauli Community Forest or elephant rides through the Verandah Forest, observing rare wildlife such as elephants, endangered species, tigers, rhinoceroses, deer, monkeys, and various bird species make Bis Hazar Tal area a familiar tourist destination. The Bis Hazar Tal area, lying within the wildlife corridor in Barandabhar, is renowned for its vast species of trees. Various shaped ponds like Charbhai Tal, Betghari Tal, diverse species of flora and fauna, butterflies, crocodiles, and diverse wildlife are attractions here.

With tourist facilities such as resting places, towers, drinking water, restrooms, and information centers being built, tourists can explore a lakeside circuit from Seventeen Thousand Tal to Twenty Thousand Tal, Ratamate Tal, Eighteen Thousand Tal, Mayur Tal, Kingfisher Tal, South Kali Tal, Laxmi Tal, and up to Batuli Pokhari. Activities such as jungle walks, boating, jeep safaris, village tours, and cultural observations are available.

6. Narayani Beach Area

From Narayani Bridge to Gaurishankar Temple, the religious sites, Jor Kusum, Narayani River, and the marine sports held in Baluwa, along with Dialo Bangala and festival venues, are additional attractions here. The proposed Narayani Midway Model, including a water park by the Bhatatpuir metropolitan city, offers abundant entertainment to enthusiastic tourists. The suspension bridge constructed near the Bharatpur Metropolitan City Ward No. 3 office, the island, picnic spots, wildlife observation of various species including rhinoceroses, deer, and various birds, boating are the main attractions here. With easy access from Kathmandu-Pokhara by air, Muglin or Trivenidham by waterway, and roadways, Bharatpur and Narayangadh bazaars provide ample comfortable hotels for accommodation to tourists visiting this area.

7. Chowkidanda \ Kavilasgarhi

From Narayangadh Bazaar of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, around 18 kilometers east, at Bhorle, after approximately half an hour of uphill walk, one can reach Chaunkidanda, situated at an altitude of around 1,100 meters above sea level. Additionally, one can also reach Chaunkidanda via the middle of the Padmarga, which is about 6 kilometers from this route. This metropolitan city consists of 29 wards. Bharatpur Metropolitan City’s 29 wards are places where Laliguras, Sunakhari, and Sunagabha bloom. The metropolitan city is developing Chaunkidanda as a hill station. Chaunkidanda has been developed as a place to observe panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan ranges, the winding Narayani River, and the vast expanse of the Samathal plains. From this year onwards, adventurous sports like paragliding have also been initiated in Chaunkidanda. This adventurous sport has also contributed to increasing tourism activities in this area. Kabilasgadhi, an ancient historical site of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, is located 25 kilometers west from Chaunkidanda. The Bharatpur Bazaar area can be observed as a scenic place from Kabilasgadhi. This place is famous for the Gurung ethnic group’s traditional dance, Naach, and the Lop Unmukh Chepang settlement, where one can also observe the Chepang culture.

Similarly, along with major tourist destinations, Bharatpur Metropolitan City has other attractions such as Jagatpur, Rhinoceros Sanctuary, Batuli Pokhari, Kasara, Golaghat, and Bageshwari. Likewise, the metropolitan city includes Ganeshdham of Bharatpur 11, B.P. Shanti Nagar Forest, Ganzipur, Simari Town, Mahaboudha Stupa, Rhino Lake, Dhanagadi Temple, Chitwan Exhibition Center, Bakhana Multi-purpose Cooperative, Rani Pokhari, Prangarik Agricultural Production Cooperative, and the United Rapti River Community Forest Area.

Most travellers who post on this forum are independent travellers, not participants in group tours, so your responses may be limited.

You won’t find an Indian operator in that market. If you want a small group tour you need to look in your own country.

Ideally, speak with a bricks and mortar travel agent near you.

Day 05 Jaipur - Ranthambhore wild life ( Approx.04 hours drive)

Day 06 Ranthambhore - Morning & Evening jeep safari to hop tiger

Day 07 Ranthambhore - Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary- Fatehpur Sikri- Agra ( Approx. 06 hours' drive)

Day 08 Agra - Taj Mahal as well as other monuments visit. Take an overnight train to Varanasi

Day 09 Arrive Varanasi in morning, relax after visit Varanasi

Day 10 Varanasi visit

Day 11 Varanasi - Delhi- Home ( by connecting flight )

If you have more time can add Udaipur in beginning for couple of days.
