The view of the Perth skyline from across the Swan River, in Western Australia at sunset

A western adventure awaits you on a tour from Perth.

Australia's largest state may seem daunting, but starting your trip from Western Australia's capital city of Perth can put you on track for the journey of a lifetime. Head south to Margaret River for some fantastic seaside wines, continue North to Australia's less famous Ningaloo Reef  with its pristine beaches and turquoise waters or stop in at Broome where you'll find camels and red earth as you've never seen it.

How can I get to Western Australia?

There are several ways to get to Western Australia including flying, catching public transport, and self-driving, with the most time-efficient one being different depending on where you're traveling from.

There are over 10 public airports you can fly into in Western Australia but the most popular one is Perth Airport. From there, it's easy to organise transportation to your final destination of either Margaret River or further inland.

When is the best time to visit Western Australia?

There's no one 'best time' to visit Western Australia as each season promises unique activities and breathtaking scenery.

The most popular time to visit is during the summer season (December, January, and February) as it coincides with Australia's school holidays and the weather is warm and sunny.

If you're wanting a holiday without the crowds, the months of March-May and September-October are the best times to visit as the weather is still reasonably warm and enjoyable, especially if you're spending long periods of time outside.

What are the best places to visit in Western Australia?

Western Australia is full of stunning landscapes and special natural attractions so it's hard to fit them all into one list but we'll give it a go. Here are our picks on the best places to visit in Western Australia:

  • Rottnest Island
  • The Bungle Bungles
  • Ningaloo Reef

What should I pack for a tour in Western Australia?

Our Western Australian tours are all about action and adventure so there is no need to bring any fancy clothes. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the water and the white sand of the Margaret River region and Ningaloo Reef.

Bring a good pair of walking shoes so you can explore the national parks comfortably. A light jumper is useful if you are going to be out on the water for lengthy periods of time.

What kind of animals live in Western Australia?

There are plenty of animals to spot during your travels around Western Australia including 141 of Australia's 207 mammal species (25 of which are only found in WA).

Around 400 reptile species, and roughly 1,600 marine species.

Tick them off the list below as you go:

  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Whale sharks
  • Australian sea lions

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Best Perth Tours & Day Trips

Sitting pretty on the banks of the Swan River, Perth lures travellers in search of pleasant weather, endless sandy beaches and a laid-back lifestyle. Western Australia ’s vibrant capital is incredibly remote (nearly 3 hours flight to Adelaide, the closest Aussie city) yet at the same time incredibly well connected (hello direct flights from London). But whether you are travelling from Melbourne or Milan, it’s hard not to be charmed by Perth and its sunny vibe.

Perth Day Tours & Trips

Spend a few days exploring this easy going and beautiful city, then discover Western Australia’s true beauty by travelling to the spectacular and remote destinations further afield. Head south to uncover wine country, towering Karri forests and pristine beaches lapped by crystal-clear water. Or take a trip north through the wild and dramatic landscapes of the Pilbara and the Kimberley. Whichever direction you choose, you are sure to have an unforgettable experience as you journey through some of the most spectacular scenery Australia has to offer.

From Perth there are plenty of day trips that take you to the stunning attractions just on the city’s doorstep. Meet the iconic and highly photogenic quokkas on a day trip to Rottnest , an idyllic car free island just 45 minutes off the WA coast. Or get some unusual photos of the Martian-like landscape of the Pinnacles on our Perth Tours . Wine lovers will relish a chance to taste some of Margaret River ’s world-class drops on a day trip from Perth, or head to the nearby Swan Valley on our half-day tour.

Multi-Day Trips from Perth, Western Australia

To explore the white sandy beaches, ancient Karri forests and lush countryside of the South West , join our 6 Day Esperance & Margaret River Camping Tour . You’ll sample the premier wines of the world class wine region of Margaret River, walk amongst the canopies of giant tingle trees, and spot kangaroos on the snow-white beaches of Cape Le Grand National Park. At night, bed down in swags to sleep under the stars and count satellites as they whizz by. To extend the journey to South Australia , pick our 10 Day Perth to Adelaide Tour and keep going all the way across the Nullarbor.

See why making the trip out to Australia’s Wild Wild West is truly worth it when you head up to explore the spectacular and unforgettable scenery of Western Australia’s northwest. Tours that head north of Perth journey into increasingly remote country, where the distances are unfathomable and the beauty indescribable until you have experienced it for yourself. Explore the Kalbarri National Park and see dolphins come right up to the shore on the 4 Day Monkey Mia Tour . Keep heading north to discover the underwater world of Ningaloo Reef , with the chance to swim with whale sharks, on the 7 Day Exmouth Tour . For the ultimate WA trip, the 10 Day Perth to Broome Tour will take you all the way to the northern pearling town and its famous Cable Beach.

Perth takes life in its stride. Perhaps more than in any other Australian state capital, the focus here is on taking things easy, taking them slow, and savouring the good times.

Happily, there’s plenty to savour – both in the city, day trips from Perth or even further into WA. Perth’s weather rarely deviates from delightful, a sublime Indian Ocean sunset is never too far off and Rottnest Island – just a 25-minute ferry ride from Fremantle – is home to quokkas. Don’t know what a quokka is? Google Image ‘quokka selfie’ for instant merriment.

As a city that owes its fortune mostly to mining and agriculture, Perth often feels midway between a big city and small country town. Only a handful of skyscrapers silhouette the city skyline; parks, waterways and beaches are ubiquitous; and it’s widely appreciated that some things just operate at their own pace. Meanwhile, the dining is superb, the atmosphere cosmopolitan and the arts and music scenes taking off big time. Perth makes the weekend feel like a weeklong affair.

GUIDED HOLIDAYS Perth & Western Australia

Guided holidays in perth & western australia.

0 trip found.

Being located on the stunning banks of the Swan River, and as capital of gorgeous Western Australia, a day trip to Perth is definitely something that should be on the top of your Australian to do list. It’s the world’s most isolated city, but don’t start thinking that means there’s not much going on in this lively town. Taking a day or more to tour this place will show that not only is it one of the friendliest places you’ll visit in Australia, but it’s also got some of the most incredible sites and activities.

It’s the world’s most isolated city, but don’t start thinking that means there’s not much going on in this lively town. Taking a day or more to tour this place will show that not only is it one of the friendliest places you’ll visit in Australia, but it’s also got some of the most incredible sites and activities. There’s the lush inner city Kings Park, the Swan Bell Tower, Fremantle’s bustling coffee and bar life, ‘The Cott’ or Cottesloe Beach (an incredible stretch of pristine, white sandy beach) plus a ton of other things to see.

If you’re after a day trip just outside Perth, you’ve also got a few different options. Just 3 hours south you’ve got the world class wineries of the Margaret River region. Then north there’s Nambung National Park, where you’ll find some of Australia’s most unique natural wonders, the Pinnacles; a unique expanse of mystical limestone pillars rising from the desert sand. Head east and you’ll find Wave Rock in Hyden, an incredible granite formation frozen in time and an epic National Geographic Magazine feature in 1967.

The Best Perth Tours 2024 Guide

' src=

Hi, I’m Wendy and have lived in Perth since 2000 when I moved here from London.

If you’re looking for a wonderful way to spend your time in Perth, then a tour of the city’s landmarks is the way to go. Not only will you get to see some of Perth’s most iconic sights, but you’ll also learn about its history and culture.

This is my list of the best tours in Perth – operators that I have worked with and tours I have taken.

This post may contain affiliate links (of companies I book through). This means I may receive a small commission if you book through them. You can read the disclaimer for more information.

Best Perth Wildlife Tours

For anyone visiting Perth , a wildlife tour is an absolute must, providing a memorable experience that is both educational and entertaining.

Mandurah Dolphin Cruise

Dolphin sightings are very likely (however, not guaranteed) on this dolphin cruise in Mandurah . Cruise along the canals and see the affluent homes on the water’s edge before heading out to the Peel Inlet and Mandurah Estuary.

We’ve been lucky enough to see dolphins on every cruise around Mandurah .

dolphins swimming in mandurah canals alongside luxury boat and houses

Whale Watching Cruise

This two-hour whale watching tour departs from Fremantle, Perth’s port. Onboard the 25m Steep Point, you will learn about the migration of whales and other interesting facts in the live commentary.

The luxurious vessel has five viewing decks, where you might spot humpbacks, the southern right, and maybe even the rare blue whale.

Swim with Dolphins

Depart from Rockingham, south of Perth, for a cruise around the small islands off the coast. If dolphins are spotted, which is pretty much guaranteed, you can get in the water with them. Snorkel equipment and wetsuits are included, along with a light lunch.

Children must be at least seven for this swimming with dolphins tour .

Best Perth Cruises

A cruise on the Swan River is a great choice, with something for everyone – whether you’re looking for a sightseeing cruise, wine cruise, or dinner cruise.

Fremantle Cruise

There’s nothing nicer than being out on the Swan River on a beautiful summer’s day. Why not combine it with a visit to Fremantle ? Captain Cook offers a cruise from Barrack Street Jetty in Elizabeth Quay to Fremantle, passing the Old Swan Brewery, Matilda Bay, and multi-million dollar houses. There’s also the option of a lunch cruise , which includes a buffet lunch on the way to Fremantle.

See this post on Swan River Cruises if you’d like more information.

view of a river and city skyline on a summer day

Perth Swan River Dinner Cruise

Enjoy a two and a half hour Perth dinner cruise along the Swan River with twilight views of the city skyline. Dinner is a buffet of hot and cold food, including prawns, roast beef, pasta, salads, and desserts.

Wine, beer, tea, coffee, and soft drink are provided.

Swan Valley Wine Tour

The Swan Valley, east of Perth, is home to over 40 world-class wineries. A scenic way to experience Western Australia’s oldest wine region is on a Swan Valley Wine Cruise.

Captain Cook Cruises offers a few options, including a return cruise with a grazing platter at Sandalfords Winery.

The best value , however, is the Afternoon in the Valley tour , which is nearly A$100 cheaper . The itinerary is slightly different, and it only includes a one-way cruise (by coach on the way there), but you still experience the Swan Valley.

Best Perth Tours for Families

Families looking to explore what Perth has to offer should consider tours of the Perth Mint, a day on Rottnest Island, and a Segway tour.

Rottnest Island

This beautiful island off the coast of Perth is a must-visit destination for visitors. Not only are the beaches stunning, the snorkelling excellent, and the walks scenic, but who can resist a selfie with a quokka?

If you want to know more about this island before booking your ferry , read this guide on things to do on Rottnest Island. It includes details on how to get there, the best places to stay, and what to do once you’re there.

the sandy beach and turquoise ocean at little parakeet bay with people sunbathing and sun tents on the beach

Perth Mint Gold Tour

If you’ve never seen gold being poured or are interested in coins, add a tour of Perth Mint to your itinerary.

During the one-hour tour, you will learn about the Australian gold rush, view the largest coin ever made, watch molten gold being poured, and touch a gold bar worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s an interesting tour providing insight into the Gold Rush era.

the limestone exterior of the historic perth mint with a path leading to the door

Perth Segway Tour

Explore the banks of the Swan River and Elizabeth Quay on this Perth Segway Tour, or take the Segway tour of Kings Park . It’s a fun way to see the sights.

tourists on a segway tour with yellow jackets standing on segways

Perth’s Best Walking Tours

Our favourite way to see a new place is on foot. A Perth walking tour can be a good idea if you want to learn more about the city, need help determining the best parts, or want to be part of a group.

Perth’s number one tour company since 2007, Two Feet & a Heartbeat, offers a range of tours to suit most interests. Choose from their Coffee, Culture, and Art Tour, Arcades and Laneways Tour, or the Eat, Drink, Walk Tour.

These tours are all highly-rated with Two Feet and a Heartbeat receiving a 5 star rating with over 1,100 reviews on TripAdvisor.

See if your dates are available as these walking tours get booked up fast.

Best Sightseeing Tours in Perth

Perth is easy to get around, especially with the free  cat buses . However, a tour is a good idea if you’re pushed for time or want some interesting local information.

Perth’s Hop On Hop Off Bus

A budget-friendly way to see Perth for first-timers is using the Hop On Hop Off bus . We use them in most cities we visit to get an overview of the place before we explore. Stops include Kings Park, the Bell Tower and Elizabeth Quay, Perth Mint, and Optus Stadium.
