Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Torres del Paine hikes: Multi-day hikes   |  Day trips

What is Torres del Paine famous for?

Torres del Paine is probably the most famous national park in Patagonia. It’s located in Chile, at the border with Argentina, at the very southern tip of South America. The closest town to visit it is Puerto Natales.

Torres del Paine’s proximity to Antarctica means cold or cool weather all year round , snow-capped mountains, grandiose glaciers, turquoise mountain lakes, great hiking routes and photo opps.

The park’s most famous view is the 3 fingers-shaped granite mountain with a lake in front, called Cuernos del Paine . Many hikers climb to get a glimpse of this unique view at the Base of Torres hike; but the other hiking routes and multi-day routes are also heavily frequented in the park, especially during the Southern summer, which peaks in Jan-Feb.

Torres del Paine is of course on our list of best National Parks in South America .

Base of Torres hike Cuernos del Paine

Besides Cuernos del Paine, other breath-taking lookouts are accessible by car or with a short walk, such as:

  • Glacier Grey
  • Lake Sarmiento
  • Salto Grande waterfall
  • Milodon Cave, which is a lesser-visited landmark, outside of Torres del Paine NP

Check out the hiking routes and other points of interest on the official Torres del Paine map (in Spanish).

What does Torres del Paine mean in English?

Torres del Paine is a mixed Spanish and Tehuelche name, meaning Blue Towers. “ Torres ” means ‘towers’ in Spanish, while “ paine ” is ‘blue’ in the indigenous language. The blue might refer to the shades that the rocks take in a certain light; or to the numerous blues throughout the whole area: the sky, the mountain, and the lakes.

How to get from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine?

The Park is located under 2 hours driving from the town of Puerto Natales. The most popular way of getting there is by bus, or as part of a tour. Bear in mind that, just like accommodation, bus options are limited in the low season (Apr-Nov), as fewer people visit Torres del Paine.

The cheapest way to do Puerto Natales–Torres del Paine is by bus. It’s also the most common among hikers, who then carry on onto the W trek, the O circuit, or the day-hike to Cuernos del Paine.

Several bus companies link Puerto Natales to the two entrances of the park ( Laguna Amarga and Pudeto/Sarmiento ) twice a day: early morning and early afternoon. When I was there in March 2022, buses left Puerto Natales bus station at 7 am and 2:30 pm.

Torres del Paine entrance

The bus trip takes 1 hour 45 mins and costs 6000 CLP (7.5 USD) one way. Tickets can be bought the day before, or on the spot; but in the high season (Jan-Feb) it’s worth buying the ticket the day before , just to be on the safe side.

At Laguna Amarga, entrance tickets are checked. Then there’s a possibility to hop on a shuttle bus that transfers hikers to the trailhead at Las Torres . In March 2022, this bus cost 3000 CLP (4 USD) one way.

The shuttle bus back –from the trail end at Las Torres to the Laguna Amarga entrance– is timed according to the departure time of the buses back to Puerto Natales, early afternoon and in the evening.

Austral beer calafate ale

By transfer

If you’d rather explore Torres del Paine in an organized tour, you will start directly in Puerto Natales. So no need to worry about getting to the National Park. See tours below.

Renting a car could be a good option if you’re not interested in neither the W trek nor O circuit (since they are multi-day hikes), but you’d still like to go around and see the sights at your own rhythm. In that case, we recommend renting a car from rentalcars.com  in Puerto Natales.

How many days should you spend in Torres del Paine?

The answer depends on your interests, your physical ability and how much time you have on your hands (or rather, in your feet). It’s important to know that Torres del Paine is all about trekking and nature; these landscapes can be reached mostly through ascents and descents on rocky terrain .

Torres del Paine offers both multi-day hikes and day hikes. So it’s possible to spend just one day there , for example with a day tour (see section below ). These allow to see the most beautiful parts of the park, accessible either by car or with a short hike.

But those who’d like to dive longer into this wild nature should spend at least 4–5 days on the W trek, or 7–8 days on the O circuit.

O circuit Torres del Paine Chile

Multi-day hikes in Torres del Paine

These trails give you more time to experience the beautiful wildlife, observe local flora, enjoy the sounds of the wilderness. You’ll stock up on that unique energy that we only get when we spend days in nature.

There are 2 different hiking routes : the W trek takes 4 to 5 days (depending on your walking speed); the O circuit takes 7 to 8 days. You’ll be staying on campsites, either in your own tent or renting one, or in huts along the way.

The W trek and the O circuit are among the best multi-day hikes in Patagonia .

This trail circles around Torres del Paine National Park in the shape of the letter “O”. Hence the name. It’s the most comprehensive trail in the park ; but due to its length, the most challenging one as well. As I said, it takes 7 to 8 days, depending on your walking speed.

Glacier Grey view hike from Los Perros campsite

Half of the route runs on the same trail as the W trek (see below), and that’s the part that gets busy in some periods. Comparatively, the part which doesn’t follow the W trek is more remote, less frequented, and gives a backcountry hiking experience .

The route is well marked and there’s a clear goal of which campsite you need to reach each day. So it’s absolutely possible to do this hike without a guide.

This 5-day hike forms the shape of a “W” and runs partially on the O circuit’s route. It’s more trafficked compared to the O circuit; but it also offers the most stunning views in the park . Fast hikers can finish the trek in 4 days as well.

The advantage of this route is that, since it’s considerably shorter, your backpack should be lighter . And that’s not a detail to your back and your legs.

W trek Torres del Paine Chile

The route is well marked and there’s a clear goal which campsite you need to reach each day. So there again, it’s absolutely possible to do this hike without a guide.

Torres del Paine landscape

Day trips to Torres del Paine starting from Puerto Natales

If you only have one day to experience Torres del Paine, you can opt for the day-hike to Cuernos del Paine lookout , which requires a good physical condition as it involves a 1.5-hour ascent. Another option is to go on an organised day tour to see all the beautiful views which are accessible by car.

Day-hike to Cuernos del Paine / Base of Torres

This 1-day hike goes from Las Torres trailhead to Cuernos del Paine or Base of Torres, the most iconic view in Torres del Paine National Park, the 3-finger granite rocks. It’s a challenging hike with a 1.5-hour ascent at the end but with an extremely rewarding view. Many hikers climb up at night in order to see the towers in the golden sunrise light.

Landscape during the Base of Torres hike

The best way to do this hike is to stay in a camping (Central or Chileno) or a hotel at Las Torres the day before, and either climb up to catch the sunrise or climb up later to enjoy the view during the day.

Day-tour in Torres del Paine National Park

Apart from pure hiking trips, there are picturesque Torres del Paine tours from Puerto Natales with hotel pickup. With the comfort of a vehicle, you will explore the area and see a diverse range of natural phenomena, wading also into lesser-visited parts of the national park.

How many days do you need in Puerto Natales?

Although Puerto Natales itself is hidden in the shade of both Torres del Paine and the more southern town of Punta Arenas, it’s a lovely, typical Patagonian town . It has more charm than the small settlement of Cerro Castillo , at the Northern entrance.

It’s located on the Last Hope Sound, on the shore of Almirante Montt lake, with a view of snow-capped fjords right across the port. It’s worth spending here 1-2 days before and/or after your hike (at least to rest from the effort!).

Puerto Natales port

The town is also a good place to buy camping/hiking equipment; repair your tent (if it broke, like ours did); take out some cash (that’s very important as ATM’s in Patagonia are almost non-existent); and indulge in fresh, locally-sourced fish dinner.

Where to stay in Puerto Natales

Since there are no hotels in Torres del Paine (only campsites), most people stay at least 1 night in Puerto Natales. Especially before hiking, it’s best to have a hearty breakfast that will give you the energy you need for the trek.

Bear in mind that options in Puerto Natales hotels are limited in the low season (Apr-Nov) as fewer people visit Torres del Paine.

We recommend the below hotels/hostels, as they are comfortable, clean, relaxed, have good reviews, and all include breakfast, free Wi-Fi and a private bathroom:

★ Budget option : Hostal El Sendero – a hostel near the bus station. It has a very friendly owner and offers a hearty breakfast.

★★ Mid-range option 1 : Hotel Vendaval – a hotel labelled as sustainable, with almost a 360° view of Puerto Natales and its harbour. It’s situated in the town centre, 2.1 km from the bus station, and offers a large buffet-style breakfast.

★★ Mid-range option 2 : Hostal Boutique Factoria Patagonia – this hotel with a modern look is also labelled as sustainable. Right in the town centre, it provides a buffet-style breakfast too.

★★★ High-range option : Hotel Costaustralis – a chateau-style designer hotel, labelled as sustainable, featuring a wine cellar, bar, and restaurant with a typical Patagonian gastronomical menu. It has a buffet-style breakfast and a stunning panoramic view on the Andes mountain range.

7-days "W Trekk" discovering Torres del Paine National Park

As a solo female traveler, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience doing the W trek. This tour company handled everything and was incredibly responsive via WhatsApp and Tour Radar with any questions or concerns I may have had. If you’re thinking of booking through a company or going alone, I can tell you I met many people on the trail who were cautionary tails of those who tired to wing it and found out that they were without accommodation, reserved food, or transport to and from the welcome center. This was an awesome company to book with, I am so relieved and thankful that I went with a company instead of trying to do all the reservations alone! Highly recommend booking!

Amazing trip! Eve was on every detail of the trip and she even helped us to book the domestic flights needed for the trip. In my opinion El Calafate is a destination that everyone should visit in Argentina and the visit to Perito Moreno Glacier, the guide Paula was very knowledge and extremely experience and the full day to Torres del Paine is a great option if you don't have many days to stay inside the national park. The hotels selected by People Travel were incredible, specially Altiplanic Hotel at Puerto Natales, unspechless.

What people love about torres del paine national park tours.

4 Best Experiences In Chilean Patagonia

T here is more than just one Patagonia and I am not talking about the aptly named clothing brand. In the southernmost part of South America lies Patagonia. However, two countries proudly lay claim to it. After nearly going to war a handful of times over this strip of land where the Andes seemingly plunge into the ocean, Chile and Argentina now share this natural wonderland.

Upon finishing my teaching in Chile, I embarked on an epic trip south, zigzagging my way along the Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway, and beyond. My ultimate destination was Ushuia, Argentina, from where I would board an icebreaker ship to take me to Antarctica. However, along the way, the unique landscape of southern Chilean Patagonia captured my heart. Here I’ll share my top four experiences in this adventurer’s paradise.

1. Penguin Sanctuary

You might think, on my way to Antarctica, I wouldn’t need to see more penguins, but one can never see enough penguins as far as I’m concerned. About 22 miles northeast of Punta Arenas, Chile, Monumento Natural Isla Magdalena is a 2-hour public ferry ride away. Another option would be a tour on a speed boat to shave off an hour of the trip. However, the ride was as much a part of the adventure as the actual island. Keep your eyes open for other sea life and enjoy the beautiful scenery of islands and glaciers all around you.

Be sure to visit between the months of September and March when these endemic Magellanic penguins breed. During the other half of the year, no tours are offered because you won’t see the cuties. Once on the island, you’ll be surrounded by over 120,000 penguins. There is a set path that you will follow as you observe them in their natural habitat. Keep in mind that these are wild animals and you cannot touch or interact with them.

The island is uninhabited by humans and there are no accommodations. You will likely return on the ferry after about 1–2 hours of exploring. Be sure to dress for the weather. It can get quite cold and windy in the south. Make sure you have plenty of room on your camera for all the fun pictures you will take of these goofy little guys.

2. Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine

Named for the shape of the route you will hike among the unique towers at Parque Nacional Torres (“towers”) Del Paine, the W hike is the more difficult, yet shorter of the two hikes to see the main features of this park. These include: Base Torres Viewpoint, British Viewpoint, French Valley, and Grey Glacier and Lake.

The other hike is called the Circuit and will require a full week, while the W requires about 4–5 days. Both are well marked trails and there are maintained (yet not usually serviced) campgrounds and refugios (“rustic dwellings”) at strategic locations along the way.

If you are the adventurous sort, you can do these hikes on your own. Of course, this will mean that you need all your gear with you — pack, tent, sleeping bag, food, etc. Or, you could take one of the many tours available. These usually offer gear and food. There are also options to rent your gear in the nearby town of Puerto Natales.

If 4 days to a full week of strenuous backpacking is not your thing (wasn’t mine either), you can still enjoy the wonder that is Torres Del Paine. While not exactly the type of park you go to relax in nature (it’s very popular and heavily visited), you can still spend a full day taking it all in.

Surrounded by glacial lakes, small streams, guanacos (a small, deerlike creature native to South America), and nandus (a bird similar to an emu native to South America), there is plenty to see and explore against the backdrop of the towers. There are several other shorter trails to travel for all the postcard-worthy photos of the towers.

3. Puerto Natales

If you’re visiting Torres Del Paine, chances are you are doing so from the town of Puerto Natales, Chile. Often overlooked or skipped on the way south, Puerto Natales is a charming town with lots of character. It’s true that it is the main location from which to book tours, rent gear, and catch buses to Torres, but it has its own magical appeal.

Whether it’s a stop on your way south or a chance to recuperate after hiking the W, Puerto Natales is a welcome haven. Enjoy the easy, laid-back feel of this town while sipping on the handful of craft brews that locals swear are better because of the glacier water from which it is made (I don’t disagree). Be sure to try a Cerveza Austral made from a local berry called the calafate . Legend has it that if you taste one of these berries, you are sure to return. I’m sure the same is true for tasting this berry beer.

Other ways to enjoy this friendly town include checking out some of the local fare. Especially popular here is Patagonia lamb. This lamb is roasted over coals for about 4 hours and is to die for. There’s also a free walking tour that meets in the plaza and is a great way to explore and learn about the history of the town and surrounding areas.

Most of what you’ll do in Puerto Natales is relaxed and recouped. There’s a lovely river walk and beautiful sunsets. There’s plenty of souvenir shops and streets to stroll, all while in the picturesque Andes Mountains.

Pro Tip: Puerto Natales is either the starting point or ending point for the Navimag Ferry. This is a unique way to travel from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. Driving or bussing along the Carretera Austral can be difficult and long. Instead, you can do this stretch on a 4-day, 3-night ferry through the fjords of Patigonia. The passage includes all meals, room, and activities on board. I enjoyed this trip back to Puerto Montt and was awestruck by the beautiful scenery of fjords and glaciers along the way (you won’t see them from the road).

4. Balmaceda And Serrano Glaciers

Conveniently, this is another tour that leaves from Puerto Natales. A big part of exploring southern Patagonia is getting to view all the glaciers that exist there. On this tour, you will get up close and personal with two of the most famous glaciers in Patagonia.

Tours last anywhere from 4–7 hours and navigate toward the glaciers and Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. Along the way, you’ll admire the beautiful scenery of fjords, glaciers, a handful of cormorant colonies, and sea lions. The tour will stop at the park where you will have an hour or so to explore the base of the glaciers on foot along the many trails.

Back on the boat, the crew will be waiting for you with glasses of whiskey. The best part is that cooling these glasses of whiskey is real glacial ice. This was a true highlight for me. However, if you’re lucky enough to watch a glacier calve, this will be your highlight. You will be shocked by the sound it emits and the splash it makes.

There are seemingly endless adventures to have in Chilean southern Patagonia. Much of what you choose to do depends on how much time you have to explore this ninth region of Chile. Few people ever make it this far south, so congratulations on your journey!

Top airline flying to Torres del Paine

I do not read or speak in Spanish. Only English. When asking for help, the people spoke quickly in English and pointed a lot. I wish they would’ve spoken a little slower for me to understand. There was much confusion and hurried in their message and I was unclear as to where to go

Everything was as you would expect in coach - fine. Flight was close to on time.

It’s been some time since I saw the plane and the cabin that old and worn out.

No air in the middle rows. Had a hard time breathing. Was dying of heat.

I loved how polite the crew was even though some of them wasn't the best with English that they still done everything they could to help me with my needs food was amazing

Terrible They charged me 157$ for excess baggage even though my bags were within the normally accepted limits Flight was late. Service was poor. The snacks were really bad

Horrific checkin procedure with neither Delta nor Latam figuring out how to check me in. 4 hrs on customer support with both and both airlines pointing to each other who should do checking. I was not checked in until morning of flight, which for international flight is concerning.

It was a good experience, the flight was a little too long & the food was ok

We had 2 delayed LATAM flights in our trip. We were only given one coffee for 5 hours delay. Also when we were boarding the crew wanted to charge us for our allowed carry on luggage. I got a bit angry and they finally didn’t charge anything. Not flying with LATAM again.

the flight from Boston to Curitiba was on time actually 30 minutes earlier. latam was not able to unload the luggage for custom checkup in Sao Paulo ii took two and half hours . i missed the flight to Curitiba spend the night in hotel and then flying in the morning to Curitiba

Puerto Natales

The gateway to Torres del Paine …

The beautiful and remote Natales was founded in 1911 and inhabited primarily by Chileans from the city of Chiloé. Today, it is the transit city to Torres del Paine National Park, but also a destination on its own with various activities such as trekking, mountaineering and sport fishing.

Puerto Natales has a wonderful geography of uneven reliefs, valleys, fjords, archipelagos and the mysterious white of the ice fields. Other attractions are the Historical Museum, Plaza Arturo Prat and the Ether Aike Artisan Village.

Its airport, Teniente J. Gallardo, is located 6 kilometers from the city and only receives domestic flights. From Santiago, SKY, Latam and Jetsmart  airlines fly to the destination in approximately three hours.

The main shops are downtown: coffee shops, chocolate shops, restaurants and tourist agencies. Eberhard, Bulnes, Baquedano and Blanco Encalada streets are the busiest. It has a wide hotel network for all pockets.

In 2017, the city inaugurated the new Hospital “Dr. Augusto Essmann Burgos ”, located at Avenida España # 1650.

There are also exchange houses.
