The large explosions caused many of the caves and rock formations to be created. In the 1960s, the government decided to declare the islands a national park .

Best Islas Marietas Tours

To get to the Marietas Islands it is a 1-hour long boat ride from Puerto Vallarta or a 20-minute boat ride from Punta Mita. On the way, you’ll be able to see dolphins, the famous blue-footed booby bird, and probably some humpback whales (early December to the end of March). If you plan on going on a Martietas Islands tour, we recommend the following:

• Plan in advance as tickets can sell out fast and access is not permitted on Mondays and Tuesdays.
• If you’re prone to seasickness, you may wish to take a dramamine before heading out.
• Remember to take towels, your swimsuit, and reef-friendly sunblock.
• Some companies charge a conservation fee of $50 pesos for the to CNANP (National Committee of Protected Natural Areas) and $50 pesos to Bahia Unida .

Islas Marietas Hidden Beach Tour

Playa Escondida, or the Marietas Island Hidden Beach tour, is only open from Wednesday to Sunday and has very limited access. The government only allows up to 115 people each day. Approximately 2000 people visit the islands every day, so you can imagine how coveted these Islas Marietas Hidden Beach tours are. You should also do this well ahead of time to ensure there are available tickets.

In order to reach Islas Marietas Hidden Beach, you’ll have to swim about 200 ft (~ 60 m). You will be provided with life vests and snorkel maks to enjoy the underwater view along the way. Groups are also kept small to maximize your experience. Discover great beaches and beautiful scenery amongst blue-footed boobies, dolphins, and other wildlife.

Marietas Islands is considered to be one of the best snorkeling locations in the area.

A profuse biodiversity which counts 115 fish and 92 species of birds living in the area, Marietas Islands was granted the title of National Park not so long ago, thanks to the work of a group of biologists led by Jacques Cousteau, originally started in the 60’.

Now a recognized UNESCO site, the islands were originally a military training zone, used by the mexican army as a bomb testing location.

Cousteau and his fellow scientists were the first to recognize the abundant biodiversity of the islands, their remarkable flora and fauna down and above the water.

Here you can swim in clear waters, relax on pristine beaches, and snorkel in natural coves. Marietas Islands are definitely a must see during your vacation in the Nayarit Riviera.

What to Expect

An intimate way to get to know one of the most famous treasures of the riviera Nayarit. From the comfort of the boat, you will be able to observe a great variety of seabirds, the most famous among them the blue footed booby, also frigate birds and seagulls to mention a few. Around them, the ocean teems with marine life; a great variety of fish find food and shelter between these volcanic rooks, moorish idols, damselfish, as well as surgeonfish, angelfish and puffers. Following the guidelines of the park rangers in place, 2 beaches can be visited at the islands, the only 2 places where the tourists have actually access onland: Hidden Beach and Playa Nopalera.

While the Hidden Beach requires prior reservation you can freely visit playa Nopalera depending on ocean conditions.

During the winter months, whale watching will be added to the regular schedule of the excursion.

An intimate adventure for a close group of friends

A family friendly excursion, perfect for those who don’t like the big crowds, this boat trip will fit a limited number of guests. Meeting point will be the dive center in Sayulita from where round transportation to the boat in Punta de Mita is provided.

After 3 hours spent in the ocean the group will be driven back to Sayulita for lunch.

El Parque Nacional Islas Marietas tiene un acceso super limitado y sólo 116 personas al día tienen permiso para visitar la Playa Escondida.

Porfa, revisa y confirma las siguientes condiciones antes de pedir checar disponibilidad:

– Hay un cargo extra de $1,700 MXN por persona. Esto se paga únicamente en efectivo, en pesos mexicanos el día del tour. Debe ser en efectivo porque se paga directamente a la persona que asegura los lugares en el Parque Nacional. Todos aceptan pesos mexicanos, no se aceptará ninguna otra moneda.

– No hay cancelaciones; una vez confirmado, ya no podemos cancelar.

– Los visitantes deben tener más de 12 años y menos de 59, y saber nadar bien. (Tenga en cuenta que el recorrido principal por las Islas Marietas está abierto a todas las edades y habilidades.)

– Es obligatorio el uso de casco y chaleco salvavidas.

– No se permite la entrada a mujeres embarazadas.

– No disponible los lunes y martes.

Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach)

Come Tour Marietas Island and Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach), also known as Playa del Amor (Love Beach). This destination is unique for its peculiar crater formation in the middle of the ocean. Tour Marietas Island and it will soon become a favorite destination when visiting  Riviera Nayarit . There are actually two separate tours from Punta Mita Mexico : one takes you to the islands and the other lets you visit the islands as well as swim into the famous hidden beach of Playa Escondida.

Marietas Island Tour

On the tour of Marietas Island you can visit the beaches that ring the exterior of the island, among them Playa La Nopalera with its incredibly crystalline waters and more colorful fish than you can imagine. Tours held from December through March might very well include sightings of humpback whales frolicking nearby—truly a unique experience! During this tour you’ll also be able to snorkel around the islands. We recommend it for the entire family. Keep in mind, though, it doesn’t include the access bracelet to the hidden beach of Playa Escondida/Playa del Amor.

Tour Marietas Island with access to Playa Escondida/Playa del Amor

This is everyone’s favorite tour! Access to Playa Escondida/Playa del Amor is restricted to 116 people per day, which means you’ll need prior reservations, especially during vacation season. To access hidden beach Playa Escondida you need to wear a life jacket and swim without fins to avoid damaging the coral. You get there by jumping off the boat a few meters from the entrance and swimming to the interior of the beach. It’s not recommended for children under 4 years of age. You can snorkel once you’re inside.

Length of Marietas Island Tour

The tour lasts approximately two hours plus transportation time from wherever you decide to take it.

Please note the National Park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
