The first time I snorkeled at Molokini Crater, I was eight years old and I was blown away by both the fish (beautiful!) and the slide off the boat (the stuff an eight year old’s dreams are made of).

Since then I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips and tours to find the best Molokini snorkeling tour experiences. And I’ve found some great ones.

Molokini crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is home to a marine life sanctuary as well as a bird sanctuary. The crater is thought to have been formed from a volcanic eruption 230,000 years ago. The island crater is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving as the crater has crystal clear water and great visibility as well as a large and varied fish population.

Want to jump right into the recommendations without reading the whole thing? We’ve got you covered with some of the best Molokini snorkeling tours: – Our absolute favorite tour departing from Wailea – Jump aboard a power raft from Kihei – This Molokini Catamaran tour from Ma’alaea Harbor in Central Maui is wonderful. Save 10% with our Promo Code! – A larger boat from Ma’alaea but a really family-friendly experience Plus we have more listed below!

Molokini Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Are snorkeling tours worth it.

We love snorkeling tours and think they are definitely worth it for a few reasons:

  • Get instructions and head out with an experienced guide: this is helpful and important whether you are new to snorkeling or you’ve done it a few times. A great guide can help make the experience even better and they can help you learn precautions that will keep you safe in the ocean.
  • Keep the reef safe: when snorkeling from the shore, it is easy to inadvertently damage coral and rock if you’re not careful. The coral is delicate and has been growing for thousands of years. It’s important to keep it safe!
  • Have a great time on the water: getting a view of Maui from the water is such a different perspective. Relaxing on a boat and getting to enjoy a few hours on the water with a knowledgeable guide talking story gives you memories you can take home.

Note: the only way to visit Molokini Crater is with a snorkeling tour. You cannot get there from the shore. Molokini Crater is a highlight of a trip to Maui (check out the other 32 things on our list of best things to do on Maui ).

What is the best time of day to snorkel Molokini Crater?

Normally, you’ll find that it’s best to snorkel Molokini Crater in the morning. Most tours leave in the morning in hopes of finding the calmest waters. In the afternoon, the tradewinds can kick up and the ocean conditions get rougher.

If you’re headed to Maui, make sure you review our ultimate Maui Guide . It has nearly everything you need to know to help you plan your trip. And it’s all free.

How long is the boat ride from Kihei to Molokini?

The great thing about leaving on a snorkeling trip from Kihei or Wailea is the ride to Molokini is really quick. From Wailea, the ride is around 15 minutes and from Kihei the ride is around 20 minutes!

Compared to a 45-minute ride from Ma’alaea Harbor, leaving from Kihei or Wailea is fast and efficient.

There’s a good chance you’ll need a car when you’re on Maui. We love to get ours with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . National carriers and no prepayment — it’s a winner!

Where do Molokini snorkeling tours depart from?

Molokini snorkeling tours depart from three different locations on Maui: Ma’alaea Harbor, Kihei Small Boat Ramp, and Maluaka Beach in Wailea.

Ma’alaea Harbor is in central Maui and is the furthest away from Molokini Crater but the most number of boats leave from there.

Kihei Small Boat Ramp and Maluaka Beach in Wailea are closer to Molokini Crater and are much more convenient for anyone staying in South Maui, but fewer boats leave from there.

We give you options for snorkeling tours departing from each location.

Is Turtle Town the same as Molokini Crater?

Many Molokini Crater snorkeling tours add a second stop on their trip at Turtle Town. But Turtle Town is not the same as Molokini Crater. Turtle Town is a snorkeling spot famous for turtle sightings that is located off the coast near Makena Landing . This stop is a nice compliment to Molokini Crater as you won’t see any sea turtles in the crater — but you will see fish, eels, and if you’re lucky, an octopus.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Two great options leave from the Kihei Small Boat Harbor. And both are small boats — get ready for an adventure on a power raft.

Redline Rafting

Redline Rafting’s two-hour tour feels like an express ride in the best possible way. Jump on the raft and you’ll be out to the crater in 20 quick minutes. Once there you’ll have plenty of time to snorkel in the crater with your small group (the raft only holds 11 passengers!).

Their five-hour tour includes a little more excitement. Not only do you snorkel in Molokini Crater but you are also able to head to the back wall of the crater (weather permitting), which is an adventure. And you’ll spend some time at Turtle Town as well before having lunch and heading back to Kihei.

Check out our video of our snorkeling trip with Redline Rafting:

Makena Coast Charters

Also aboard a raft, Makena Coast Charters offers two tours.

During their two-hour tour , it’s similar to the Redline Rafting two-hour tour. This is an express route for people who are excited to get in the water at Molokini Crater. After a 20 minute ride to the crater, you’ll get an hour or more to explore the water.

Their four-hour tour loops in a stop at Turtle Town. You’ll first get roughly an hour to snorkel at Molokini Crater followed by another hour of snorkeling at Turtle Town. After snorkeling you’ll enjoy a meal and beverage service before they return you back to the small boat harbor.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Wailea

I don’t like to play favorites because all of the tours on this list are excellent, but we love the sunrise snorkel with Kai Kanani. While it is a very early departure, you get to spend some time in the crater before anyone else gets there. After snorkeling in the crater, you head to Turtle Town.

Kai Kanani leaves right from Maluaka Beach (which is stunning), but you should expect to get a little wet during the beach loading. Once you’re on board, you’re off on a luxurious adventure. The crew is fantastic and you’re treated to breakfast, hot drinks, and a beautiful catamaran.

If you’re not an early riser, they also have a mid-morning snorkel which is also fantastic. The same tour just a few hours later.

In case it’s not clear, we just love this tour and so do our kids. Check out our experience with them (and our stay at the Grand Wailea).

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Ma’alaea

A trip to Ma’alaea is a further drive from South Maui and it takes longer to get to Molokini Crater on the boat, but it’s a great option for people who like a larger boat (no rafts!), or need an easier accessible boat (no beach loading).

Sail Maui – 10% OFF!

We’ve done several Sail Maui tours and we’ve had an excellent time every time. Their Molokini Snorkeling tour is no exception. Leave for the 4.5 hour tour from Ma’alaea Harbor aboard their Paragon II boat. While the boat ride to Molokini is longer from Ma’alaea, they make use of it by offering you a delightful breakfast. After snorkeling at Molokini Crater, enjoy lunch on your ride back to Ma’alaea.

This is a great option for passengers of all ages as the boat is comfortable and getting onboard from the harbor is easy.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Fair Winds II

Family fun is the focus on the Four Winds Molokini Crater tour . It’s the largest boat on this list, but they have some specific amenities that can make going with a larger group totally worth it. Note: their boat capacity is 149 people but they advertise that they keep their tours smaller than that to ensure comfortability.

On their Molokini snorkeling tour, you’ll get to snorkel Molokini Crater but kids are front and center on the tour. There is a waterslide (that even adults enjoy), a glass-bottom viewing room, cookies, temporary tattoos, and more. In the glass bottom room, a few kids or adults can take a peek at what’s underwater, without actually having to get into the water.

Best Snorkeling Tours in Kihei and South Maui ( that aren’t to Molokini Crater )

While we love snorkeling to Molokini Crater, sticking closer to shore is also a great option. We have two suggestions for snorkeling tours that don’t include a boat, but still have great snorkeling.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Maui SUP and Snorkel Adventures

Get in some morning exercise along with a snorkeling tour on an SUP adventure and snorkeling tour . This two-hour tour is private and includes both your SUP rental as well as your snorkeling gear. Head out from Makena Landing (near Turtle Town) and paddle the scenic coastline. As it’s a private tour, it can be geared to your personal activity level so you can go as fast (or as slow) as you want on the SUP. If you haven’t tried SUP yet, your guide will give you a lesson and help you navigate the new skill as you head out onto the water.

Maui Snorkel Tours

This is a unique guided snorkeling tour. They offer shore-based tours , meaning no boats are involved at all. You’ll head out in a very small group with a guide (or a private tour) after a briefing on land about marine biology and how to snorkel.

Why is a shore-based excursion so great? On a tour boat, there’s no one available to give you 1:1 guidance for how to properly snorkel. With a guide, they are taking you step by step through how to snorkel, where to snorkel, and equipping you with the knowledge that you can use on future shore snorkeling trips.

Once you’ve mastered your snorkeling skills, you may feel comfortable enjoying some of the other best snorkeling spots on Maui .

Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. As one of only a few partially-submerged volcanic cones of its kind in the world, it offers sights and experiences that you probably didn’t even know you were missing.

We’ve been diving Molokini for 30 years and never grow tired of its clear blue water and incredible sea life. Come see why many consider Molokini the best snorkeling Maui has to offer.

Olowalu is one of the most amazing spots to explore marine life among all the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy crystal-clear blue waters, a decorated coastline, impressive coral reef formations, and an abundance of Hawaiian ocean marine life.

Venture through calm waters with your family and friends, enjoying all the beauty of the Pacific. Be an eye witness to a myriad of tropical fish, colorful seabeds, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, and more. Olowalu is an adventure worth seeking; a perfect ocean activity from beginner to novice.

Turtle Town

Turtle Town is considered one of the best Maui diving locations, offering a rare glimpse into the world of the Hawaiian green sea turtle. These gentle creatures have been honored and loved by Hawaiians for centuries and you’ll be given the chance to share their home with them as you snorkel Turtle Town.

This is an opportunity that few people will ever have and will likely be one of your most memorable experiences in Maui. Snorkel with and closely observe the Hawaiian green sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is on the West Side of Maui and best reached by boat, explore one of the most unique and protected bays in Hawaii. Home to a host of tropical fish, Octopus, Eels, and the Hawaiian green sea turtles, Coral Gardens does not disappoint.

The natural reef formations are incredibly beautiful, vibrant in color, and bustling with ocean marine life. The clear and shallow waters reflect gorgeous Hawaiian sunlight, making for amazing visibility, and ideal conditions for snorkeling in Maui.

Coral Reef Initiative

No other vessel on Maui offers as much. 360-degree panoramic viewing, warm showers, and a super water slide are a few of the amenities.

Pride of Maui is the largest and most stable catamaran on Maui. Her sprawling deck boasts unobstructed panoramic views.

The last two years presented many challenges and learning opportunities. Everyone was forced to slow down, revisit priorities and take stock of what’s important.

We made significant operational changes with a limited guest capacity of 50%. We were afforded the opportunity to improve our onboard amenities and refine the guest experience. We’ve listened to our guests and our repeat Ohana, who welcome the limited capacity and appreciate the upgraded service.

We recognize that capacity limits allow for more attentive and personalized service, with the added benefit of greater room to roam our spacious vessel comfortably at a relaxed pace.

On behalf of our crew and employees, we thank our repeat Ohana for your support and look forward to serving you soon.

Fish of all kinds will swim by, busily conducting their beautiful business. While you’re exploring, you may see parrotfish, black triggerfish, and longnose butterflyfish. BOAT AMENITIES

Two water slides.

As if your Molokini snorkeling tour couldn’t get any more fun, Calypso sports two exciting water slides. One zips you straight up and off the bow with a thrilling drop. The other is a bit calmer, but still quite fun. The whole family can go up and down, and around and around all day. Slide, shout, splash, swim, climb stairs, and do it again. Why not? You’re on vacation!

EASY OCEAN ACCESS!

Almost every place you look, Calypso has created a path straight to the place you want to be – the ocean! 11 individual dive stairs lead you right to the water, and each has its own handrail for a convenient entry and exit. The rear dive step is particularly cool. It’s lowered directly into the sea, which is quite similar to boats visiting the Great Barrier Reef! You’re going to love it.

LARGE SHADY CABIN!

We understand you want to work on your tan, but there’s a good chance you’ll need a break from the island sun at some point. No worries! Calypso’s got you covered – literally! The shady main cabin gets plenty of airflow, and will provide all the respite you need. You’ll find comfortable chairs, tables to accommodate groups of all sizes, and – of course – the tasty food and drink counter.

SNORKELING INSTRUCTION!

Our crew members are advanced ocean explorers, and they will explain the snorkel equipment they provide. You will be outfitted with a snorkel set that fits to your face and feet, and you will learn what to expect on your first float above the reef. Feel free to ask questions throughout your Molokini snorkeling tour. When you are ready to hop in, go for it!

GUEST SAFETY!

First and foremost, we focus on safety. Calypso is a United States Coast Guard certified passenger vessel. We take care to abide by all the USCG applicable rules and regulations, and we carry all the necessary safety equipment that is required. We also provide safety instructions and information about the snorkel sites and the boat.

Glass-Bottom Windows!

Once the boat stops, you can take advantage of one of the rarest amenities of any boat in Maui. Descend beneath the lower deck into Calypso’s glass-bottom viewing room. Four panels of large aquarium-style glass transform the ocean into, well, an aquarium! There is space to sit, relax, and really take in the lovely coralline views. Bring the younger kids so they can see what their older siblings are discovering outside the boat.

COMFORTABLE SEATING!

4,000 square feet of comfortable, intimate and covered seating is found on three separate decks. There are tables for most every seat. Each deck is outfitted with speakers, so no matter where you’d care to sit, you will be able to hear the narration, safety information, and jokes from captain and crew. For the best tan and the best views, go up to the top deck. When you return to your seat after your ocean adventure, no worries – every chair was made to get wet and still feel cozy.

FLOTATION DEVICES!

Should you care to spend your water time strictly on the surface, Calypso’s got all kinds of ways to float you. Included in your Molokini snorkeling tour are pool noodles, float belts, boogie boards, and life vests of all sizes. Wetsuits can help you float, too, and they are available to rent. For the whippersnappers, we’ve got kickboards complete with viewing windows! These boards are so comfy, kids have been known to nap on them while checking out the fishes.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!

Imagine yourself happily spent after snorkeling Maui’s blue waters and exploring the huge boat you’ve been riding. You’ve made friends with the fun, responsive, and dynamic captain and crew. You and your family are relaxing in the shady cabin when out of the blue, your favorite crew member brings around a delightful surprise – cookies! We can tell you from tasty experience that biting into a chocolate chip cookie is a fantastic way to end an incredible day at sea. And take heart – we have plenty to go around!

TWO FRESHWATER SHOWERS!

Once your Molokini and Turtle Town snorkeling sessions are complete, and you’re pau playing in the sea, it’s super nice to rinse off all the salt. “Pau” means “finished” in Hawaiian, and Calypso has two freshwater showers available for you to use. The shower water is warm, too!

2ND DECK JUMP PLATFORM!

Are you a daredevil, or do you want to be? On Calypso’s high second deck, the “leap of faith” awaits. Do you think you’re ready to take the leap?

THREE RESTROOMS!

Calypso is equipped with three restrooms – known as “marine heads” once you’re aboard any boat. The heads are located on the lower, main deck for your convenience.

UNDERWATER WORLD

There is always something to see

The North Pacific Humpback Whales travel from Alaska to Maui's oceans every winter. On a Maui snorkel trip or a Maui Whale Watching Tour, whales are seen yearly between December and March. The peak season is January-February, when guests can see the whales in abundance in Maui's waters. These majestic ocean creatures travel to Maui's oceans for breeding and birthing their young calves. During peak season, it's common to see baby Humpback Whales frolicking and playing on the ocean surface as they learn skills and grow vital for their upcoming trip back to Alaskan waters.

The Island of Maui is home to over five species of sea turtles, including the Hawksbill, Leatherback, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, and Hawaiian green sea turtles. When snorkeling in Maui and visiting beaches and shorelines, the Hawaiian green sea turtles are the most common turtles to see. Known as honu in the ancient Hawaiian language, these turtles are endemic to Hawaiian waters. They're currently considered a threatened species and protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973.

In the ancient Hawaiian language, all dolphins are called Nai'a . Although over 13 species of dolphins are found in Hawaiian waters, the most commonly seen on a Maui boat charter are the Hawaiian spinner, spotted, bottlenose, and rough-toothed dolphins. They are even found swimming with nearby humpback whales during the Winter season. The Hawaiian spinner dolphins are particularly unique and quickly spotted because they are small, fast, and love jumping, playing, and spinning in Maui's oceans. Sightings are not guaranteed*

On Maui, there's a wide variety of large deepwater and tropical fish to see in their natural habitat. When snorkeling in Maui, the most commonly seen marine life includes Hawaiian sea turtles and an abundance of colorful reef fish. Frequently sighted fish are yellow tang, raccoon butterflyfish, trumpetfish, Moorish idol, rainbow butterflyfish, triggerfish, and the famous Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Maui snorkelers may also see the wrasse fish cleaning Hawaiian green sea turtles' shells and more marine reef animals like sea cucumbers, sea stars, octopus, eels, and manta rays.

Coral reefs are found only in 2% of the world's oceans, and some of the most incredible coral reef formations surround the Island of Maui. Not only do they protect Maui's coastline, but they also are home to a diverse network of tropical fish varieties and marine life. When snorkeling in Maui, it's important not to touch or step on the coral reef because it's incredibly fragile. Snorkelers will commonly see lobe coral (10-45 feet deep), cauliflower coral (10 feet deep and less), blue rice coral (found on reef floors), and finger coral (found in protected waters within 100 feet).

Molokini Crater

Snorkel molokini crater.

Maui Snorkeling

Maui boasts what is often considered the best snorkeling experience in Hawaii , and a significant contributor to this acclaim is the presence of the ancient Molokini Crater. This partially submerged volcanic formation, nestled in the Alalakeiki Channel between Maui and Kaho’olawe islands, adds a unique dimension to underwater exploration in the region.

The crater forms a small, crescent-shaped island that is a renowned spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Its unique crescent shape provides a sheltered bay, protecting the diverse marine life from strong currents and waves. As a result, it boasts some of the clearest water in Hawaii, with visibility often exceeding 150 feet. This makes it an ideal location for observing the stunning underwater world that thrives beneath its surface.

Maui Snorkeling offers an all-inclusive 5-Hour Morning Snorkeling Tour to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town that ensures you’ll have the best snorkeling experience in Maui . With this tour, you’ll snorkel at the Crater where the underwater environment is home to around 250 species of fish, many endemic to Hawaii. Alongside this, you can find a variety of invertebrates, coral species, and occasionally, larger marine animals such as manta rays, and monk seals.

If you want a less-crowded tour, another tour offered by Maui Snorkeling is the all-inclusive 3-Hour Afternoon Snorkeling Tour. Weather permitting, this tour visits Molokini Crater and operates from 1 PM – 4 PM.  You can explore the wonders of Molokini Crater snorkeling at your own pace, without feeling rushed or crowded, ensuring an unparalleled adventure!

The world has been raving about the Molokini Crater, and it’s time to find out why. This crescent-shaped dive spot isn’t just a mound of volcanic rock… it’s a real-life paradise …helping to explain why so many visitors crave Molokini snorkeling tours. The Crater’s existence is told in one of two ways. Scientists say the crater was formed from the shifting of Earth’s tectonic plates, causing volcanic eruptions underneath Maui. This eruption was so strong, it pushed volcanic rock about three miles southwest. Little did the people of Maui know that 230,000 years later, it would be one of the most beautiful scuba diving spots of all time.

molokini crater snorkeling tours

The second story of the crater’s existence is said to be a Hawaiian myth. There was once a prince, Mo’o, in love with two women: Molokini, and the goddess of fire, Pele. When the prince chose Molokini over Pele, Pele was enraged. To get revenge, she cut Molokini in half, the bottom forming what we know as Molokini Crater. The top half was said to form Pu’u Ola’i, the north end of Makena Beach.

You can choose which story to believe, but the Crater’s history doesn’t end there. As World War II approached, The United States needed a location to practice dropping bombs. The shape and length of Molokini was the perfect target, as it was structured similarly to a battleship. After turning the spot to ash, it was left untouched until 1975. Unexploded bombs were dropped by the U.S. Navy, and then again in 1984, destroying what was left of the ocean life and corals.

After years of protesting from the public to stop the destruction, the U.S. deemed the Molokini Crater and its 77 surrounding acres a Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary and Marine Life Conservation District. It is protected by both the United States Coast Guard and the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife , so only those with permission can administer tours. And if that wasn’t enough, dropping an anchor anywhere but the designated spot is prohibited.

Above water, the islet is a bird sanctuary, hosting nesting seabirds such as Bulwer’s Petrels, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, and the Great Frigatebirds. It’s worth noting that while the underwater portion of Molokini is accessible for recreational activities, access to the land is restricted to protect the sensitive bird habitat.

Parrot Fish

Now, Molokini Crater looks better than ever. Its turnaround has made it a popular tourist destination for boat rides, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Most of its ocean life has been restored, as the crater is home to hundreds of species of fish and coral… Good luck seeing the same fish twice! It even hosts some endangered fish, such as the Black Triggerfish and Parrotfish , to name a few. Its highest point is about 161 feet above sea level and the water shines a diamond blue, near perfect visibility.

11 Things To Know Before Snorkeling In Hawaii’s Molokini Crater

  • Destinations
  • Outdoor Activities
  • United States

A crescent-shaped spit of land rising some 160 feet off the west coast of Maui, the landmass we know as Molokini isn’t much to look at — at first. While it’s rocky and rather barren above the ocean, beneath the surface it’s an entirely different story. A site of spectacular beauty awaits snorkelers thanks to the partially submerged crater and a volcanic eruption that occurred some 230,000 years ago.

Snorkeling in Molokini Crater was an absolute highlight of my visit to Maui — one that I hope you get to experience soon. Here’s what you should know before you go.

1. Molokini Is The Best Snorkeling Spot In Hawaii

Snorkeling in Molokini Crater — now a Marine Life Conservation District — is hugely popular for a reason. It is certainly the best spot to snorkel in Hawaii, and may just be the best in all of North America.

The crater itself is far from Maui’s busy beaches, and the crater’s sunken bowl protects wildlife from the open ocean, making it the perfect calm nook to see up to 250 varieties of fish, birds, and mammals, plus 38 varieties of coral. In the early morning, the visibility is amazing, and, on a good day, you can see up to 150 feet deep.

If that weren’t enough, during certain times of year, you can even see whales in the distance! During my February visit, I actually heard them “singing” to one another beneath the surface. Their soothing sounds remain one of my favorite travel memories.

2. Arrive Early

No one likes getting up early in the morning. But when it comes to snorkeling in Molokini, waking up early is essential, since the early morning is when the water is at its calmest and clearest. By the late morning, the water is choppy, and visibility is limited. If you have the choice between a 6 a.m. departure and a 10 a.m. departure, choose the earlier option. And if you see a steeply discounted afternoon tour, know that visibility will be quite limited.

To mitigate the pain of that early morning wake-up call, try to plan your Molokini Crater snorkeling excursion early in your trip, presuming you’ve flown west to Hawaii from North America. Your internal clock will already be used to waking up before dawn, local time.

3. Complimentary Breakfast

Speaking of early mornings, most boat tours boast of offering a complimentary breakfast. This usually consists of store-bought pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee, and pineapple-orange-guava juice. Some tours also offer quiche or breakfast sandwiches. The food is adequate, but not exactly exciting. The same can be said of the post-snorkel barbecue and booze on the longer tours.

The quality and variety vary by tour, and I think the best strategy is to go in with modest expectations and hope they’ll be exceeded. But since you really do work up an appetite while snorkeling, a hearty post-adventure brunch at a beachside cafe is a smart plan.

4. Depart From Makena If Possible

Most Molokini Crater snorkeling outfitters depart from Maalaea, but that’s not your only option. My personal preference is to depart from Makena with Kai Kanani . Makena is the closest community to the Molokini Crater. This means you get the shortest possible boat ride and you are (usually) the first to arrive, beating everyone else by at least 30 minutes.

Departing from Makena didn’t just mean a shorter boat ride — it also meant getting up ridiculously early, since my hotel was in Lahaina . But it was absolutely worth it. It was utterly magical to be alone with just my fellow boat mates as we explored the underwater world.

A super-early departure from Makena would also be a bonus for anyone with a very tight schedule. The trips from Maalaea usually clock in at about 6 hours, owing to the much longer boat ride, while the Makena trips typically last 3.5 hours and conclude before 10 a.m. However, the trade-off is that your social time on the boat is really limited.

5. Motion Sickness

Another benefit of the boat ride from Makena? If you are prone to seasickness, you will appreciate the short ride. The waters around Maui are rarely rough, but they aren’t exactly smooth! Even on the shorter trip, I felt a bit queasy and had to look at the horizon. (Though, as my husband points out, that isn’t exactly surprising given my history with boats. He didn’t feel a hint of nausea of any kind!)

If you do opt to depart from Maalaea, bring along some soothing ginger ale and a dose of anti-nausea medication. Many vessels advertise that they have their own special concoction of anti-seasickness juice. (Spoiler alert: It’s just lemon-lime soda with some freshly grated ginger mixed in.) Alas, my sensitive stomach didn’t appreciate that it was lukewarm, nor did I enjoy the texture of the ginger, so I was glad to have my usual standbys with me.

6. Know What To Expect

In general, most tours include about 45 minutes of snorkeling at Molokini Crater and another 30 to 45 minutes of snorkeling at a spot famous for sea turtles. All snorkeling equipment is included, including flotation devices for those who prefer to bob instead of swim, plus a light breakfast, drinks, and snacks as detailed.

You should bring your own rash-guard shirt as well as reef-friendly sunscreen. Wetsuits, rash-guard shirts, and underwater cameras are usually available for rent.

The tour staff consists of the captain and some additional deckhands. There is usually an onboard naturalist (our amazing guide helped us spot a shy octopus!) and sometimes a lifeguard. Tipping after the tour is encouraged, and $5 to $10 per person per staff member is standard.

7. The Size Of The Boat Matters

Molokini Crater tours range from small affairs of about two dozen people on a catamaran to much larger, multideck boats. The largest boats, like those offered by Quicksilver , come with waterslides, glass-bottom viewing platforms, and freshwater showers.

In my opinion, this is one experience where size absolutely matters. I was thrilled to experience Molokini Crater snorkeling as part of a much smaller group. However, that’s just my preference. The larger boats do offer more activities and amenities and can be a good option for families or groups of friends.

The price of a Molokini Crater snorkeling tour can vary widely, from as low as $100 per person to $200 per person plus taxes and tips.

8. Arrive In Your Swimsuit

There are bathrooms onboard, but these aren’t really meant to be changing facilities. Arrive with your swimsuit on underneath your clothing, and have a spare outfit to change into once you’re back on dry land and waiting for a hot meal at the cafe.

9. Bring Your Own Towel

On most boats, you must bring your own towel. I recommend bringing two — one for the boat and one to sit on when you return to your car. Most hotels have beach towels they will happily lend to you, or you can pick one up at any of the ABC convenience stores.

Aerial view of Molokini Crater, Hawaii.

10. Beach Loading And Unloading

In some cases, tour boats practice beach loading and unloading. This means that the passengers must wade out into the surf and onto the steps of the boat. Beach loading means fewer piers have to be built among the fragile coral and, in general, it’s a good thing. But if you’re not expecting it, you might feel awkward getting out to the boat this way.

First, expect to get wet as you walk across the surf (another reason to keep a spare outfit and towel in your car!). Bring footwear that you can easily slip on and off and that you don’t mind getting wet, like a pair of flip-flops. Finally, bring all your belongings in one easy-to-carry bag, like a backpack or a sturdy tote. Pack your cell phone, keys, and other valuables into a waterproof bag and place it securely in your main bag — not your pocket! It’s helpful to have your hands free to keep your balance as you walk into the shallow water and to grip the rails once you board.

11. Spiritual Significance

Finally, remember that you are a guest of the people of Hawaii. Molokini is more than just a beautiful nature preserve. It figures heavily in the legends and spiritual beliefs of Hawaiians, as do the animals you’re privileged to see. Wearing reef-friendly sunscreen, making an effort to avoid any possible contact with marine animals, and choosing a tour operator that practices sustainability isn’t just demonstrating sound environmental stewardship — it demonstrates your respect for this sacred region.

Your Molokini Snorkel Adventure Awaits! One Snorkel Tour, Infinite Experiences!

  • What To Bring
  • Safety Tips

Maui Snorkel Charters trip out of Kihei boat ramp is hands down the best snorkel trip we’ve ever been on in over 25 years of coming to Maui.

Are you ready for an adventure that’ll make you smile for DAYS?

Every day on Maui is unique, offering dramatically different experiences depending on the time of year and daily ocean conditions. The best snorkeling spots change day to day – an insider secret that our regular customers have figured out! ( Ask about our multiple trip discount! )

We revel in the fact that no two days are alike, which is why we built a custom boat to accommodate changing conditions and offer a unique snorkel tour on every trip .

When you join our Molokini snorkel tour, we’ll take you to the spots with the best snorkeling that day. While other tours also go to Molokini, we’re the best option to for a customized group tour, taking you to all of the best spots around South Maui. You’ll get lots of personal attention from us, too, because we don’t overcrowd our boat.

Molokini Crater may be the main attraction, but you’ll see so much more!  You’ll visit up to 5 snorkel sites, depending on conditions (the most of any snorkel tour on Maui !).

Your 4-hour adventure begins at 7:00 am (6:45 am check-in) – late enough to sleep in, but early enough to get back before the trade winds pick up in the afternoon. You’ll depart from the Kihei Boat Ramp, a 5-minute drive from most Wailea Resorts and within walking distance of many Kihei condos. This prime location allows shorter transit times to Molokini and the South Maui Coastline, which means you’ll spend less time getting places and more time snorkeling!

6:45 am – Check-In

When you arrive at 6:45 am, get settled in while our crew prepares your sanitized snorkel gear and wetsuit tops ensuring proper fit and comfort.

7:00 am – Explore Molokini

At 7:00 am sharp, we’ll depart for a 10-minute ride to Molokini while you learn about the important ecological role of Molokini and how to most effectively use your snorkel gear.

Whether it’s your first time snorkeling or your 100th, our crew covers everything you need to know for the best snorkel possible for that day.

Then the real fun begins. At Molokini, you’ll see plenty of beautiful fish, coral, shells, octopi, and a host of other interesting sea life. Our crew will be in the water with you the entire time not only to ensure your safety but also to point out some of the most overlooked marine life.

9:30 am – Adventure To More Snorkel Spots

The fun doesn’t stop after Molokini. Next, your captain will pick the best, secluded snorkel spots based on the day’s conditions.  If Maui’s really showing off, you might explore up to 7 sites, including Turtle Town, Blue Lagoon, and Pu’u Ola’i (Red Hill).

Keep your eyes out for special guest appearances along the way from dolphins and, between December and April, humpback whales!

11:00 am – Back to the Boat Ramp

To wrap up your Best Day Ever, we’ll sit back, relax, tell some “big fish” stories. You’ll be back at the Kihei Boat Ramp around 11:00 am, leaving your entire afternoon free for another Maui adventure.

Afternoon Tours

We don’t offer afternoon tours because of our commitment to always showing you the Best Day Ever! The trade winds pick up in the afternoon which makes the ocean rough… and we’ve found it’s just not as much fun with strong winds and water blowing in your face!

We make it super easy for you to get going on your adventure – all you have to do is wear a swimsuit and bring a towel!

We’ll supply:

  • Snorkel gear
  • Floatation devices
  • Sunscreen (reef-safe, of course!)
  • Individual storage area for any personal items

For your added comfort you may want to bring:

  • Cash to thank the crew
  • Change of clothes if you tend to get cold

Please do not bring spray on sunscreen as it is damaging to the reef and the boat.

We are family friendly! And it’s our priority to provide the best experience on the water despite age or physical limitations.

However, your safety comes first.

Our minimum excursion age is 5 years old and is not intended for pregnant women. Due to the adventurous nature of the ride, please use discretion if you have a back or neck injury or are recovering from a recent surgery.

Not Intended for guests who are:

  • Under 5 years old
  • Physically limited by back or neck injury
  • Recovering from a recent surgery

Please call with questions or concerns about your specific situation.

If you’re looking to go on a snorkeling adventure and want to see the most places in one trip, than look no further.

Snorkel Spots on the Molokini Tour

South Maui offers some of the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii, and we’ll make sure you see the best. With tons of locations to choose from, our captain will select the best for the day’s conditions to ensure you take home some incredible “fish stories.”

Molokini Crater is considered by many as the #1 “must-do” adventure on Maui, and is the first stop on the trip. The crater is home to more than 250 species of marine fish, some of which can be found nowhere else on Earth. We’ll spend enough time here to see multiple spots around the crater before moving on to other great locations.

Beyond Molokini, you’ll have a chance to explore places like Turtle Tow,n known for the high concentration of green sea turtles that like to hang out here. Pu’u Ola’i (Red Hill) off the coast of Makena State Park known for spotting eagle rays.

We get to show you so many more snorkel spots than you’ll see on other tours because of our Seafari™ approach. Just like an African Safari, we guide you through an area rich with beauty and wildlife during one snorkel ‘stop’. Our crew will be in the water with you, drifting from spot to spot, pointing out coral and other marine life along the way, as our boat floats along with you. Because you are not constantly swimming out to a snorkel spot and back to the boat, you get to see way more with less effort!
