Yoga is an ancient practice that has managed to stretch and om into modern society quite elegantly. The word “yoga” is Sanskrit for “ yoking ”, which represents the idea of union, as in the union of body and mind . If you’re looking for a chance to expand your mind, challenge your body, or just to wear those cute new yoga pants, yoga adventure trips are for you!

At GoAbroad, we want to fill the needs of all meaningful travelers—not just the ones seeking far-out, thrilling, and high-adrenaline type of adventures. There's something to be said about adventures of the soul, of the mind, of your overall well being. Slow travel is where it's at, and if you're anything like us, you know that participating in yoga adventures abroad this coming year is high on our to-do list!

Best Places for Yoga Retreats Abroad

What to think about before choosing yoga retreats

Do you even lift, brah? What color are your yoga pants? Do they match your heart chakra? Even if you’re flexible, there are some things you should consider when choosing the perfect adventure yoga retreat.

How experienced are you? Some yoga retreats abroad cater specifically to beginners, while others turn up the heat for hardcore yogis. Make sure to check out the details in the programs to see if it’s an appropriate level for you.

You should also think about the style of yoga offered . If you’re looking for yoga retreats for beginners, Hatha is a great choice, because it focuses on the basics. Vinyasa is all about the flow, and things tend to get hot. Yin is super chill and all about finding your zen. It’s perfect for someone looking to lean deep into the meditative aspect of yoga.

And of course, where in the world do you wanna be? If you’re already into the idea of international yoga retreats, you’re obvs into yoga + travel. But under what conditions? It’s your adventure, so you should be picky! Want to be secluded ? Or do you want access to other activities and culture? Do you need all inclusive yoga retreats, or are you willing to go out on your own for meals? All of these culminate into making the best decision for your dream yogi retreat.

Work out, chill out, get in touch with your inner self. No matter which destination you choose, you’re going to have the time of your life. So grab your mat and light some incense, because we’re about to breakdown five of the best yoga retreat destinations abroad.

5 best destinations for yoga retreat vacations

1. costa rica.

Best Places for Yoga Retreats Abroad

International yoga retreats are perfect for people who want to explore another culture while doing something meaningful for themselves. If you’re looking for the best yoga retreat destinations out there, Costa Rica may be just the spot. You’ll find the perfect balance of vibrance and tranquility. You can spend time in a secluded yogi haven to connect with some serenity, than take a trip to the bustling streets in the city to experience culture, people, and some amazing food.

Costa Rica has affordable yoga retreats, and is ideal for the adventurous yogis out there that want to try something a little outside typical yoga retreats abroad. With access to the beach and the jungle, you can spend your time off the mat exploring the country. Or, you can sign up for language classes to practice your Spanish. When you sign up for the yoga travel duo in Costa Rica, it’ll be nothing but buena onda (good vibes).

3. Argentina

Best Places for Yoga Retreats Abroad

South American countries are popular destinations for yoga. Travel to Argentina for a chance to explore the world and your mind. Yoga adventure trips in Argentina are unique because you can balance the calming practice on the mat with a spicy off the mat adventure. Try countering the cool, quiet mental state of your yogi mind with a fiery tango lesson. It’s not a stretch to say Argentina is the perfect place for an amazing yoga adventure. Travel never felt so good! Yoganna love Argentina for the variety it has to offer. It has some of the most diverse landscapes in the world (lookin’ at you, Patagonia ), so if you plan to stick around post-savasana, you’ll have plenty of extreme exploring options.

4. Thailand

Best Places for Yoga Retreats Abroad

Yoga is pretty magical: it helps people find themselves, and connect with their emotional, physical, and mental state. The only thing that can make the practice more special is by doing it in another country, and Thailand provides the whole package. International yoga retreats in Thailand open up the door to yourself. And yes, we know that sounds cheesy, because it is, in the best ways possible. Challenge yourself off the mat by signing up for a Thai kickboxing class, or explore the jungle on multi-day trek. Volunteering with elephants will cure any emotional ailment, but you better ground your practice with with guided meditation by Buddhist monks for good measure. It’s really the ultimate adventure yoga retreat.

5. Indonesia

Best Places for Yoga Retreats Abroad

Indonesia is another hot spot for yoga retreats abroad and for good reason. It’s ridiculously picturesque, with glowing beaches and lush jungles, the food is to die for, and the sun seems to be smiling down on the country. Just stepping off the plane guarantees you will be feeling 90% zen. But if you want to do a little more than lie on the beach for days (although, that would be pretty fantastic), yoga adventure trips in Indonesia are a great option. Go suring, do some yoga, explore Bali, and let the zen wash over you like waves. Let go of all your worries and stress, and just breathe .

Travel and Yoga: Better Than Peas and Carrots

Female backpacker arms wide on dirt road with yoga mat. Here’s why travel and yoga are the perfect combo.

We all know that adventure travel is great for your mental health . BUT, there is no denying that international trips come with stressors. Tickets to purchase, planes (trains or automobiles) to catch, maps to navigate, foreign languages to stumble through, social norms to uphold—all while fighting jet lag?! Fortunately, there’s hope: yoga can actually help you travel smarter. Read on to learn why travel and yoga are the best combo since peas and carrots.

Yoga: It Fits In Your Suitcase

Whether it’s sore shoulders from heavy backpacks or tired feet from walking countless steps exploring a new city, traveling comes with a unique set of aches and pains. Adding daily yoga stretches to your itinerary will help your body recover after sitting on an airplane for seven hours (or after a long day of climbing the magnificent Rock Fortress of Sigiriya !).

Traveling Light

One of the reasons yoga is so amazing (and there are many !) is because it requires no special equipment. YOU are the machine! This makes it one of the most travel-friendly workouts. And while fitness experts say that missing workouts on vacation won’t hurt your fitness goals , even light exercise—like a quick yoga sesh in the Mayan Riviera —can help you keep your tone while adventuring abroad.

If you decide to pack a yoga mat, you can find affordable travel mats that fit in your carry-on. You’ll want one that’s lightweight but also durable (so you don’t lose that strong grip!). Odds are, you won’t even need to pack a mat—most accommodations offer yoga classes and can provide mats for you.

Book one of our all-inclusive yoga adventures and experience the perfect combination of travel and yoga with your own mat and instructor!

Say “Bye, Bye” to Jet Lag

In case you haven’t heard, regular yoga practice can actually enhance your quality of sleep , (especially Hatha yoga and Yoga Nidra). But did you know that travel and yoga work together to combat that pesky little phenomenon called jet lag?

What Is “Jet Lag”?

Jet lag is when your circadian rhythm doesn’t match the local time zone. (Say what?!) In other words, you’ve just flown to France and your body thinks it’s 2 am but the local time is 10 am. Seasoned travelers will tell you to tough it out and make yourself stay awake those extra eight hours so your body gets synced up with the local time zone. As you can imagine, eight hours feels like a looooooonnnggggg time when you’re going on 36 hours without sleep!

Yoga to the Rescue!

Never fear! Dropping into a few yoga stretches can help your body sync right up, especially if you already have a yoga routine established at home. Active poses stimulate blood flow through your body and release cortisol , giving you a natural boost of energy, while gentle poses can prep your body for sleep (not that you’ll need any help with that on your first night abroad!). Travel and yoga never felt so good!

Make Culture Shock Less… Shocking

Let’s be honest: international travel—while invigorating and important for emotional growth—can also be lonely. Culture shock , which usually happens on longer trips, is the feeling of being at odds with your host culture. It builds slowly from a series of small inconveniences or events that cause you to feel disconnected and want to withdraw from social situations.

Did Someone Say, “Instant Friends”?!

Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate culture shock, including journaling, staying active, and making friends with locals. As you’ve probably noticed from your own yoga journey, yoga is a natural community-builder. What once started as a Hindu tradition in India has now become the daily practice of millions across the globe. When you put travel and yoga together, you have an instant connection to millions of people around the world! Making friends never looked so easy.

You’ll never travel alone with our group adventure packages (friends are included!).

Keep Your Cool (Just Breathe!)

When it comes to travel, there’s a lot of unknowns. Sure, we can buy tickets, plan our itineraries, and book eco-friendly accommodations, but inevitably, something goes awry. There’s a long line at the currency exchange counter in the airport; you miss the bus for the hotel; the hotel loses your reservation and the only receptionist who speaks English is on leave. (You get the picture!)

A certain amount of international travel requires letting go and—you guessed it—taking a BIG. DEEP. BREATH. “Ahhhhhh!” Fortunately for you, this isn’t your first rodeo. You’ve been meditating, doing breathwork, and rocking those stress-relieving sun salutations in the months leading up to this big trip. You got this!

Have we convinced you yet? Experience the magical synergy of travel and yoga by booking your next trip with The Travel Yogi. Our consciously crafted, culturally immersive itineraries take you deep into the local scene and off the beaten path. Find your perfect yoga adventure today .

The word “ yoga ” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” which means to unify. A growing number of yogis have taken this pursuit to a new level by joining immersive yoga retreats that offer a deeper connection with nature, the self, and the collective consciousness. Whether you practice daily or it’s your first time on the mat, embarking on a yoga retreat can allow you to focus on your well-being in a remote or natural setting. Studies have linked yoga to reduced stress, and committing to a structured program with daily classes can help you reap those benefits—while also enjoying the stunning surroundings of your chosen destination.

Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far to have an incredible wellness vacation . From the Rocky Mountains to the lush islands of Hawaii , there are countless places to enjoy a yoga retreat in North America. These programs range in length, price, and style—from intensives at rustic wilderness lodges to luxury wellness resorts with spa amenities. Whether you’re looking to deepen your yoga practice or have a transformational wellness journey, these are the best yoga retreats in the United States and Canada.

Feathered Pipe Ranch — Helena, Montana

Feathered Pipe Ranch has been hosting yoga retreats in Montana since 1975 and draws top wellness experts from around the world. It’s easy to see why—the sprawling retreat center in the Rocky Mountains is surrounded by nearly a million acres of national forest, creating a spectacular setting for reflection and growth. While its retreats range in focus, from yoga to Ayurveda to shamanism, they all share Feathered Pipe Foundation’s mission of offering inclusive experiences that preserve cultural traditions and encourage mindfulness. Private and shared lodging options range from Western-style chalets to glamping tents and yurts, and rates include nutritious meals (including vegan and gluten-free options) and access to amenities like saunas and a hot tub. Between classes, grab a canoe to explore the property’s spring-fed lake, hit the hiking trails, and keep an eye out for roving wildlife, including herds of elk and deer that call this alpine paradise home.

Sagrada Wellness — Santa Margarita, California

Set on 45 acres between Los Angeles and San Francisco , Sagrada Wellness offers all-inclusive yoga retreats that immerse guests in the beauty of California’s Central Coast. The eco-conscious sanctuary was founded and designed by architect Scott Currie and his wife, Eva Inglizian, an acupuncturist. The duo has been leading yoga retreats for nearly 20 years, and their wellness center near San Luis Obispo encapsulates their passions for design, holistic health, and nature. Accommodations range from private rooms with expansive patios overlooking the Santa Margarita Mountains to two-bedroom cottages with additional features like full kitchens and outdoor patios with fireplaces. Between yoga classes, indulge in homemade meals that use the seasonal bounty, take a dip in the saltwater pool or hot tub, or unwind with a glass of wine. With Highway 1 right at the Sagrada’s doorstep, it’s ideal for those looking to pair their California yoga retreat with a scenic road trip.

Arctic Hive — Wiseman, Alaska

If marveling at the northern lights between sun salutations sounds appealing, head to Arctic Hive , a retreat center in Alaska’s Brooks Range. Made up of four off-grid guest cabins and two geodesic domes nestled between two protected wilderness areas—Gates of the Arctic National Park and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge—the facility offers a truly remote wellness getaway for all. In fact, many of their guests have never stepped foot in a yoga studio, says owner Mollie Busby, who built the property by hand with her husband Sean. The center only hosts one retreat at a time for just six to 10 guests, which creates a highly intimate atmosphere. Since the property sits directly under an aurora oval, September through April is the most popular time to visit. Many retreats incorporate outdoor adventure activities, such as hiking, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing. Guests can also look forward to learning about one of the world’s most beautiful and fragile ecosystems.

Art of Living Retreat Center — Boone, North Carolina

The forested Blue Ridge Mountains serve as a serene backdrop for the Art of Living Retreat Center , a 380-acre property offering day and overnight wellness adventures. The center is known for its robust programming and skilled visiting practitioners who offer targeted retreats that address specific issues—from loneliness to chronic stress—through movement, creativity, and mindfulness exercises. Founded by spiritual teacher Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the entire premise of the Art of Living Center is based on the principles of living in a stress-free and violent-free society. And, at times, the property can feel like its own utopian community, complete with a meditation hall for up to 3,700 people and on-campus lodging that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. While a natural fit for team-building retreats, it’s also an ideal destination for solo travelers. Off the mat, you’ll find a pottery studio, natural hiking trails, and an award-winning Ayurvedic spa.

Theodore Roosevelt visited the estate in northern Maine to learn about the wonders of the nearby Mount Katahdin and the wildlife in Baxter State Park with former owner William Sewall. And now, his great-granddaughter, Donna Davidge, is continuing the tradition with yoga retreats that connect guests with nature. Retreats are customizable—guests can stay for a few days or several weeks. Daily meditation and a variety of yoga classes (including stand-up paddleboard yoga) are included in the rate, as are three vegetarian and alcohol-free meals per day. As a four-season destination, guests can hike, kayak, or go horseback riding in the summer and enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter. The charming rooms make you feel like you're staying at an old family lodge. Opt for one with a deep-soaking tub to kick your post-practice relaxation up a notch.

The 125yearold Castle Hot Springs in Arizonas Bradshaw Mountains

Castle Hot Springs — Morristown, Arizona

Renowned for its geothermal pools, Castle Hot Springs is a true adults-only oasis in Arizona ’s Sonoran Desert and Bradshaw Mountains. The resort dates back to 1896 and has a longstanding history as a respite for notable families, including the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers. More than a century later, the property’s mineral-rich waters still draw wellness lovers—and activities including yoga classes, e-mountain biking, a via ferrata course, and guided meditation sessions give guests plenty to do beyond soaking. The resort offers three-night yoga retreats multiple times a year, which are all-inclusive of farm-to-table meals, activities, gratuities, and lodging in one of the 30 bungalows and cabins. Delve into the asanas of hatha yoga, the foundations of pranayama breathwork, and the sutras for a deeper understanding of the practice. Then, refuel with nourishing meals featuring local ingredients (the property grows 500 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and florals) and hit the hot springs to soothe your sore muscles.

Nectar Yoga Retreat — British Columbia, Canada

One of the best yoga retreats in Canada lies on Bowen Island, a wild haven for nature lovers just a 20-minute ferry ride from Vancouver. Nectar Yoga Retreat is best known for its signature two-night Nectar Experience Package, which includes lodging, daily meditation and movement classes, and plant-based breakfasts made with locally sourced ingredients. Longer immersive retreats, workshops, and events are also offered throughout the year. Bed down in one of the minimalistic yet cozy A-frame cabins, or pamper yourself with a stay in a deluxe cottage with additional amenities like indoor and outdoor showers, Wi-Fi, and ultra-cozy window-side reading nooks. Classes are enjoyed in a dome surrounded by pine trees, ensuring that every upward dog is accompanied by stunning views of the surrounding 20 acres of woodlands. Between classes, kayak in the protected bays, climb Mount Gardner or explore the quaint town’s artisan shops and restaurants.

The Best Yoga Retreats in the US and Canada

Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort — Lanai, Hawaii

Surrounded by pine-covered mountains and tropical foliage, Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort , is ideal for wellness enthusiasts seeking a luxurious island haven with personalized programs. While not a traditional yoga retreat, the 5-star wellness resort in Hawaii offers a full calendar of all-inclusive activities, including yoga classes, sound baths, and floating meditations, giving guests the flexibility of planning their own wellness journey. Between classes, spa treatments in a private hale make it easy to be blissfully present. Opt for a Lomi Lomi massage, which draws on the Hawaiian traditions of bodywork and aromatherapy, or try a treatment tailored for couples or moms-to-be (the adults-only resort is ideal for honeymooners and expecting parents). Many of the 92 guest rooms face the Japanese-inspired onsen gardens, where you’ll find 10 heated tubs for post-practice soaking. The on-site restaurant, Sensei by Nobu, offers health-conscious dishes alongside Nobu classics and cocktails. Balance your zen with a dose of adrenaline at the Lanai Adventure Park’s treetop aerial course, or try equine therapy with a horseback ride through the surrounding wooded valleys.

Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health — Stockbridge, Massachusetts

With five schools and a sprawling campus in the Berkshires, Kripalu is one of the most well-known yoga retreats in the US. The 125-acre center in Stockbridge has been offering immersive wellness programs since the 1980s and was instrumental in the evolution of yoga in the West. Today, it’s renowned for its yoga teacher trainings and wellbeing retreats offered by visiting global thought leaders. The most popular option is the R&R (Rest & Renewal) retreat, which gives guests the freedom to create their own itinerary of movement classes, healing arts, and outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking (the property sits on a private lake and has miles of walking paths.) Another popular draw is the recurring Essential Kripalu Retreat based on the self-care teachings of the late kundalini yoga master Swami Kripalu. Overnight rates include three wholesome meals (including meat, fish, and vegan options) and accommodations that range from private hotel-style rooms to more budget-friendly dormitories.

Fairmont Banff Springs — Banff, Canada

Those looking to pair their mountain poses with dramatic snow-capped peaks should make a bee-line to Fairmont Banff Springs , a 135-year-old chateau-style resort in Canada’s first national park. Today, its daily outdoor and indoor yoga and exercise classes and 40,000-square-foot spa facilities allow guests (including those with kids in tow) to create their own wellness plans. Off the mat, you can sign up for forest and sound bathing sessions, golf, bike rides, and snow-shoeing adventures around the UNESCO-listed Banff National Park. Then, recover in the tranquil hydrotherapy pools, saunas, and steam rooms. The 739 guest rooms also encourage relaxation with their stunning mountain views and access to the “All Be Well” channel that provides guided yoga, mindfulness, and sleep-focused routines. A selection of 12 restaurants and bars offers plenty of dining options, but the charming town of Banff is only a few minutes away if you’re craving a change of scenery.

The intention for this practice is just... Amazing!!! Equilibrating oneself to give more to others... The e-mail was really inspiring and I only can thank you Adriene and your team (including Benji) for making this possible!

Kisses from Spain

Dear Adriene, whenever I look at the calendar there’s exactly the right practice that I need for the day. I just came back from an intensive trip so the travel sequence today was perfect! Even if I never met you, it feels like you are my best friend. All the best for you and your Mexico trip!! Take care, Sandra

Thanks sister! I was going to look for one of your videos to do today and this showed up as the last message sent. I've been traveling for months and this is just what I needed!

These sessions are so so Wonderful Thank You once again for all you do for all of us. Namaste

This travel practice was just right for me to do this morning as I prepare to travel with my three young children to Texas very soon. Thank you Adriene, I really benefit from working with your practice and beginning my day on such a positive and healthy note.

You are amazing! You should come to Panama too! You would love it and we would love to have you here ❤️

Thank you for another wonderful restorative practice! I travelled on a long flight yesterday and woke up completely stiff and exhausted. This was the perfect gift! 🙂 xx

Bendiciones,

Great session for Mom's day. Been doing YWA since New Year's and now I'm Ready 2 face my 65th bday in a couple of weeks! Thanks!

Happy 65th birthday, Tema!!

love love love Thank you from Scotland!

I just finished this lovely practice. I have not been travelling recently but feel like I have had a very long "bumpy road" of life journey. So doing this practice felt like starting an intention for establishing balance and self care. A wonderful way to enjoy mother's day. With a grateful heart, Namaste

Ps. Do you have any videos specifically for fibromyalgia? I would really appreciate one.

It's on the suggested videos for Adriene list, Stephanie. 🙂 But in the meantime, you might find the videos on the Gentle Yoga playlist helpful.

Congratulations on your fluency in Spanish! I hope to do the same.

Adriene, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you and your videos. This yoga for travel video was a lovely stretch - now for a little more today.

So grateful for this practice. It was just what I needed!

Hi Adriene!

Love your classes, I've actually done more consistent yoga with you than I've ever done in my life! I'm 56 years young and I'm on Day 10! Love your doggy Benji and your sense of humour, and of course your yoga instruction! I have a problem when I sit on my shins,, it hurts at the knees and I can't sit all the way back on my feet. I stick a pillow between my derriere and my legs and feet and that helps. I'm just wondering if this will improve over time and what I can do to help it along? Thanks Adriene...you rock! Hope you're enjoying Mexico! I was going to take a week's yogacation in Oaxaca but then there was an earthquake there a few months ago. Just wondering if everything is back to normal there. Anywho, safe travels and Namaste!

Hi Yve, congrats on starting your yoga journey! As for the shin/knee pain, the Hero Pose video and the Yoga for Sensitive Knees video might be helpful.

Thank you so much Adriene. Your home practice has helped me to get into the rhythm of a daily practice of yoga , which I have wanting to do for years. I was going to a wonderful class not far from where I live, however I have been struggling with my energy levels for the past 2 months and your practice has been just what I needed to be able to carry on with my yoga without having to get in my car , travel and so on. I have been able to conserve my energy this way.

<3 <3 <3

Your practices have had a very positive impact for me and I thank you for sharing with all of us. Namaste.

I am so grateful you found me...or I found you 😉 You inspire me. Thank you from the depths of my heart. I am listening...

Hello! This video really helped me when I was just having such a bad day emotionally. Adrienne I was wondering what are the best exercises for concentration and focus? I feel like I can't focus or meditate, it's even affected my intimate life. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, love Tânia

Hi Adriene. I've been wanting to write for ages, and have been writing and re-writing my message in my head for months. But today I take the plunge. I started dabbling in your videos about a year ago. I struggle with exercise and using it as a punishment and means to an end (losing weight)... your practices are able to take me out of that mindset completely and allow me to move mindfully, regaling in the fact that my body can, indeed, move.

Over the past few months I have started doing your at-home yoga several times a week. I believe this was a huge part in guiding me to a recent decision: I am going to take six months off work and go to an eating disorder treatment clinic, where I will immerse myself in becoming happy and healthy after 16 years of bulimia. I reassure myself that I'll have you there along with me for the hard days!

Your practices are so wonderful and remind me to be grateful for what my body does everyday, and you are so excellent at heading off toxic thoughts before they begin. I have thought many times (and shared this at therapy sessions with professionals who both know you too!) that your videos are perfectly geared for individuals who struggle with negative body image, poor self esteem, and eating disorders.

Your email culminating in that "if you take the time to get clear - it will manifest" has given me the positive reinforcement that I was craving for this recent huge decision to take a pause on everyday life and truly focus on being my best self.

Thank you so much for all that you do, that you share, for your light, wisdom and humour.

You are an incredible person. Know, that you reach so many and help shine light in some of the darkest places. I likely would not have gotten to this place without your regular affirmations and kind words to a world of people you may never meet.

Much love from Nova Scotia!

Wishing you all the best on your continued yoga and life journey, Jen! So proud of you for taking this step to care for yourself. Namaste.

Thank You once again for all you do for all of us. Namaste 😉

As a tour guide, this is just what I need to help me stretch and relax after a day of sitting on a coach, moving luggage and looking after my guests! Easily practiced in a hotel room with limited time. Thank you so much

Hi Adrienne Thank you , Good your back safe and looking well I will try this need to build the core up )

Thanks heaps for the yoga class. Namaste

I drove 5 hours home today after celebrating Mothers Day with my 89 year old AMAZING mother. I did this yoga practice upon returning and in doing so I have completed my 202nd consecutive day of Yoga with Adriene. Thank you for changing my life and allowing me to love myself again. When (not if,when) I get to 365 days I am going to book myself a Yoga retreat. Would LOVE to do it with you. Any plans for upcoming retreats????

Awesome, Christine!! As for future retreats, keep an eye on the Events page for all the latest information. 🙂

Truly beautiful and enriching

Hadn't been travelling anywhere, but really enjoyed this - a great start to the week. Thanks as always and to Benji for his closing comments 😉

WOW, this one is so deliciously prevalent in this time of unrest and welcomed with an open mind, body & soul. Thank you for all you do and simply for being you!

I will definitely be revisiting this practice time & time again, as it has left me feeling relaxed, centered and full.

Thankadankadoodleedoo, Lauren

Many thanks!! Traveled from the US West Coast to the East Coast yesterday. This. Was. Perfect. ☺

Muchas gracias, compañera! Thanks for that perfectly timed travel sequence. Just came of the plane after one whole day of travel. Cheers to syncronosity!

Adriene, I love your carefree and candid sense of humor! It reminds me not to take life to seriously. Thanks for sharing your practice with all of us.

Its difficult to do yoga on my own but when i have someone to lead and light my way on the mat, i realize that together, WE CAN DO THIS! Just like life. I wanted to start over on my yoga journey because i feel like i was lost in my routine practice by life circumstances. So now that i’m found IM COMMITTED to make up for the lost time and im looking forward to waking up to you everymorning and doing some yoga to start my day. I send my love, peace and blessings to you in Mexico.

Thank you for another beautiful moments having with you beautiful Adriene. Love to you and Benji

That was AMAZING, thank you so much Adriene. Just what was needed!

Good Morning! I have wanted to tell you just what happens at my home when the yoga mat is rolled out and your voice fills my living room. Zip, my 25 lb tuxedo feline looks at the screen, looks at me, and then takes his place at the end of the mat. My own personal Benji -cat

Thank you for all you do. Zip thanks you, and Benji, too!

GREAT SESSIONS!

Dearest Adriene ... I have only been traveling in my mind for the past weeks but this was a terrific practice for FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. We all travel from Dreamland to Awakeville and this was amazing. I am saving this practice for a weekly first-thing-in-the-morning [after my drink of water and brief dog walk with my newly adopted pooch, Namaste.] You deserve this Mexican retreat/escape/exploration. Keep being the adventurer and we will probably follow! ... Randy

Adriene, thank you for this most relevant practice as my father passed recently and caring for oneself so you can care for others is a balance that has been essential to my life. Can you recommend me practices that can keep me fit/balanced during the fasting month of Ramadan? Energy may not be there to complete more challenging practices, but I still want to maintain a daily practice. Thanks!

Hi Tabby, you might enjoy the Gentle Yoga playlist during this time of fasting. 🙂

I just came back for an exhausting trip and this is just what I needed. Thanks Adrien! oxox.

Thank you so much. At the moment I am in the hospital and am able to do the practice in a meeting room in the morning. Great start of the day <3

Adriene, Thanks so much for your videos! I love doing all the yoga moves and feels that this practice really helps my body. You are AWESOME and I tell everybody I know about you 🙂 Also, high five to Benji, he's too cute. -Clara

Ahhhhhhhh I so needed this. Perrrrfect! After driving 30 hours from Delray Beach Florida to Montreal, Quebec, my body and mind needed a fix and this practice did the job! Thank you sooo much ❤️

Do you think you will come to Montreal in a near future?

Amazing, I have just come home after a long ride, and after this session I feel like reborn 🙂

This practice was much needed after 3 days of road tripping!

Hi! I've been on a 17 day work stretch through the holiday season.. this means I don't have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with loved ones until post holidays (I work in the ski industry). Your yoga has helped me so much this month to be present, positive and to make my body feel good after being on my feet 10 hours a day. THANK YOU for all that you do!

I found a travel practice after a long and arduous trip from south to north up across Africa and into the United Kingdom. It has helped me get over my travel hangover and now I Look forward to spending time with my dear friends, the first trip since covid. Thank you Adriene. We will be practicing together on the mat.

Finding the right yoga mat is like reaching nirvana — once you do you’ll be in a state of bliss. Find one you can also travel with and that’s just icing on the cake. We tapped Mandy Ingber, yoga instructor and author of Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover to give us the scoop on what attributes you should look for in your next mat purchase. Ingber, who has been the yogi to several A-List celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale, suggested we make design, comfort, grip, and portability the standards we swear by, noting to pay special attention to things like a mat’s thickness, which if too clunky, can throw off your balance, and whether or not your mat feels like a Slip 'N Slide (not in a good way) or helps you stick your poses with no problems.

Armed with all of this insider information, we tested 40 different mats during multiple yoga sessions, taking careful notes and paying special attention to attributes like excellent balance of cushion and support, great grip, and portable features that made them easy to transport. Check out our favorite yoga mats for travel below.

Best Overall

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

It has a cushy and supportive feel.

The rubber smell, though slight, was bothersome.

When it comes to thickness, consider the Aeromat Elite Yoga/Pilates Mat to be the “just right” porridge, chair, and bed that Goldilocks commandeered in the classic kid’s fairytale. There’s just enough material to support and cushion your body as you flow from pose to pose, but not so much that it gets in your way or inhibits your ability to make solid contact with the floor. It also boasts a textured finish that ensures a secure grip, especially when things get wet. We were able to work up a good sweat without our hands and feet sliding around during testing. The surface also has built-in mesh to help your mat retain its shape. And when you’re ready to pack up and go: sling one of 12 calming hues (think celeste, dusty rose, sea glass green, and chai) across your shoulder (a harness is included with purchase). It’s super lightweight — essential for any portable exercise equipment — so toting it around will be as easy as child’s pose.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Jade yoga jade voyager mat.

  • Design 3.9 /5
  • Comfort 3 /5

The great grip keeps hands and feet in place no matter the pose.

Sensitive to smells? This mat has a strong rubbery one that lingers.

There’s nothing worse than having to constantly flow in and out of a pose to wipe the water away from your sweaty hands or feet. The Jade Yoga Voyager solves for this in two ways: its opened-cell surface easily soaks up excess moisture while the textured natural rubber enhances grip. Also, weighing in at just over 1.5 pounds, this lightweight pick is the perfect on-the-go partner, whether you’re headed down the street or across the country for a wellness retreat . Plus it folds down to the size of a yoga block , which makes storing it in a shoulder bag or a suitcase that much easier. Even better: every time you make it to the mat, you’ll know you’re doing so with Mother Earth in mind because this eco-friendly mat not only does away with synthetic rubbers (that’s right no PVC or EVA), using the natural kind by extracting the latex sap from rubber trees, but the brand also plants a tree for every mat sold.

Best Portable

Nike training mat 2.0.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

A little longer than an average yoga mat, it can accommodate folks up to six feet tall while still being super easy to carry.

While the extra cushion is great for bony joints, it does make balancing poses extra challenging.

Nothing can put the kibosh on a Zen practice quicker or be more cumbersome than a yoga mat that constantly keeps unfurling while you’re on the way to your next class. Thankfully, the convenient, adjustable strap that comes with the Nike Training Mat 2.0 helps manage this issue, allowing us to wrap it around both ends of the neatly rolled mat and comfortably carry this cushy two-pounder without experiencing any shoulder discomfort. Even better, for yogis who do a myriad of floor workouts (think Pilates, stretching, core work, and more), this high-density foam mat stands in the gap, making it an extremely versatile and well-padded option. In fact, it was so cushioned that we thought it could double up as a sleeping pad for camping , but the downside is that it may be a challenging surface for balance exercises.

The Details: 71.26 x 24.02 x 0.32 inches | 2.08 pounds | PVB and foam

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

Best Lightweight

Lululemon the lightweight 5mm yoga mat.

  • Portability 4.9 /5

This mat offers a solid, firm grip without being sticky.

If you’re a heavy sweater, you may want to steer clear because it tends to get slippery.

Don’t let this thin, featherlike yoga mat — which is light enough to take anywhere you want to flow — fool you: it’s still supportive and cushy enough to handle every pose from camel to headstand. The hundreds of mini rectangular nubs covering the top of the mat’s surface will help guide your hand and foot grip so you can easily maintain your balance in each of these poses and beyond.

We found this mat very easy to roll out and roll up, and it was supremely lightweight to carry. One thing to note is that the closed cell design doesn’t allow for the absorption of sweat, which can make this mat extra slippery. However, the mat was easy to clean post practice — simply wipe it down with a damp cloth to keep dirt, stains, and bacteria at bay.

The Details: 26 x 71 x 19 inches | 3.3 pounds | Foam

Best for Hot Yoga

Jadeyoga travel yoga mat.

This lightweight mat, which comes in two sizes, is easy to carry, so you won’t have trouble toting it to and from yoga class.

For multi-hour practice days, this thin mat may lack sufficient support.

When it comes to hot yoga, you should expect to sweat. While this may be good for helping to cool down your body, major water works also leave you open to slipping and sliding across your mat, which is a definite no-no, no matter what the position. Luckily, the Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat helps keep you grounded, literally, thanks to its open cell construction, which absorbs moisture, combined with its micro ribbed surface that offers a supreme grip. After testing this mat, we loved it for its exceptional grip that was suitable even with our sweaty palms. We also thought it felt lightweight, easy to carry, and we think it would stay rolled up in transit due to its grippy texture. Feel good environmental bonus: for every mat sold, the company plants a tree.

Best for Beginners

Newme fitness instructional yoga mat.

Courtesy of Amazon

  • Design 4 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

If you routinely deal with sweaty palms, this moisture-wicking mat will help rein in that excess water.

This mat molds to your body, leaving an imprint that doesn’t instantly go away.

Being a beginner in a room full of established yogis can feel super intimidating, but newbies can practice with more confidence thanks to the NewMe Fitness Yoga Mat. Doubling as an asana crib sheet, this handy yoga mat has 70 printed pictures of poses (think crow, cow face, corpse, among others) with their corresponding names in both English and Sanskrit emblazoned across its expansive surface. So, whether you need a quick refresher mid-class or help decoding what move the teacher is asking you to perform (we’re talking about you Chaturanga Dandasana!), this mat has got your covered. We also thought this affordable mat had a great grip that kept our hands in place and felt just as grippy as mats twice the price. It was very easy to roll up and carry around as well.

The Details: 68 x 24 x 0.2 inches | 2.6 pounds | PVC

Gaiam Premium Reversible Lunar Wave Yoga Mat

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

It features an antimicrobial, waterproof layer that is moisture-wicking and nonslip.

This mat is on the thin side, so if your knees or wrists need extra cushion and support, go with another pick.

The small raised nodes covering this mat’s dual-textured sides gives it a gummy feeling that offers greater traction for hands and feet to keep you steady so you don’t slip. The result: a tremendous grip that verges on almost feeling sticky at times. Don’t let those little nodes fool you, though; they are tiny enough that they won’t disturb those peaceful moments on the mat, not even while you’re letting the day’s work sink in during Savasana. Did we mention we are also moonstruck by the stunningly painted design of moons in its many forms? FYI: if you are a visually stimulated person, a mat with a cool design, like this one, can make your practice more pleasurable, says Ingber. A handy bonus: with this mat you also get access to an online library of yoga content .

The Details: 8 x 24 inches | 6 millimeters | PVC, latex-free

Best Reversible

Manduka yoga mat.

There’s an alignment stripe down the center of one side, which can help better guide beginner’s with hand, foot, and overall body placement.

The mat’s surface is closed-cell, which means it won’t absorb your sweat or any bacteria, so you’ll have to be diligent about wiping it down post flow.

We love that this eco-friendly Manduka mat is not only free from harsh chemical substances but makes you feel like you are getting two mats for the price of one, thanks to the dual-hued sides. Regardless of what mood leads your color choice that day (we are super keen on the lavender/fig combo), you can always count on the mat’s firm, textured surface to add stability through traction. This well-designed mat held up in a variety of classes — flow, power, and hot yoga — but we think yogis interested in a more restorative practice might do better with a more cushioned pick. Bonus points: it’s light and easy to roll and fold, which makes it a great portable option for yoga-based travel .

Best Budget

Amazon basics yoga mat.

Amazon

  • Grip 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

At half an inch inches thick, this cushy mat is a godsend for those with sensitive joints.

The thickness makes it slightly tricky to transport.

Shelling out big bucks for a mat can be super off-putting, especially if you’re a newbie and unsure if you’re ready to commit to getting downward-dog on the regular. Luckily this mat is very kind to your wallet—without you having to sacrifice on things that really count like durability, grip, and comfort. Those who spend lots of time pressing into their hands (think Crow or Wheel), will find the thick cushioned surface is gentler on wrists. We used it often for handstands against the wall and planks and never felt like we were slipping, even when sweaty. The ample cushioning also makes this a great choice for floor-based bodyweight moves (hello crunches!), too.

Other Travel Yoga Mats We Liked

These yoga mats didn’t make our main list, but they still scored well and had a few key standout features that placed them in a league of their own.

YogaAccessories 1/4-inch Deluxe Yoga Mat : At 74 inches long, this foam-based mat is longer than traditional ones, which tend to land around 68 inches, making it more amenable to those over six feet tall. It’s also extra thick, making kneeling poses like camel, low lunge, and cat/cow more manageable, especially for those with extra sensitivity in this area. That said, this 3.6-pound pick can be a little unruly when it comes to transporting it, making it less portable for travelers.

Lululemon The Mat 3mm : This barely-there option — it’s only 0.12 inches thick — is dual-sided, boasting one that’s sticky and nubby to keep you stable and grounded, while the other is smooth and cushioned for workouts that won’t leave you drenched (think a couple of quick stretches versus a full-on power flow). While we love that it comes in six gorgeous shades and has an antimicrobial layer that keeps mold and mildew at bay, we weren’t fans of how moisture marks remained long after we finished our last flow.

Blogilates Beginner Lightweight Yoga Mat: This mat — which is lightweight, easy to roll, and comes with its own carrying case — is the perfect companion for on-the-go flows. At 4mm thick, this thinner silhouette is great for those who who may need extra stability during a super active and balance-heavy practice (think: Power Vinyasa). As you flow from asana to asana across this 68-inch surface, you’ll be treated to a super grippy, textured surface (both top and bottom) that eliminates slippage. One drawback: hair and dirt are commonplace when using this mat.

For this article, we looked over results from two different yoga mat tests, in which we tried a total of 40 yoga mats. In the first round of testing we tried 19 mats from notable brands (think Manduka, Lululemon, and Jade) through three to five yoga classes per week over a four-week testing period. During this time, we assessed each yoga mat for its design, comfort, grip, and portability — all features that yoga instructor Mandy Ingber said can make or break a yoga practice. Testers continued putting these mats through their paces for an additional six months to collect long-term insights.

For our second test, we tried an additional 21 yoga mats during a yoga class, paying special attention to mat thickness, cushioning, support, and how easy they were to clean. After the class was over, we rolled and packed up the yoga mats, walking around the building, and going up and down stairs to take notes on how portable they were, if they stayed rolled up during transit, how lightweight or heavy they felt to carry, and how easy (or difficult) it was to reroll the mats and pack them up.

In the end, the standout mats put the kibosh on sweat (at least most of them), weren’t overly cushy but left our joints feeling happy, and offered a stellar grip when flowing through poses. Most of all, we felt they were portable enough to travel with.

Tips for Buying a Travel Yoga Mat

Don’t forget about weight.

Lugging around a super heavy mat can make any yoga feel less than Zen, especially if it saddles you with a heavy baggage fee at the airport. That’s why it’s wise to reach for more lightweight styles (think under 2.5 pounds) so you can easily transport it to your final destination.

Consider stickiness

As far as yoga mats go, stickiness is equivalent to traction.  So if you’re looking to lower your risk of slipping and sliding all over the place, the stickier, the better (PVC yoga mats have a pretty high stickiness factor). Also handy for staying power: mats with a raised texture.

Plan for extra support

According to Ingber, thinner yoga mats make great travel companions, as they fold easily and usually weigh less. She also notes that barely there mats “will often leave you feeling every bit of the floor,” which is why shoring up your practice space with a towel or shirt to counter any pain points (think wrists or knees) or cushion more weight-bearing asanas is advisable.

Frequently Asked Questions

First determine what type of mat you have, as some are meant to be folded and others rolled. If the former, follow the creases if they are apparent, or simply fold it small enough to fit into the storage space you are aiming for. The latter? Roll it as tightly and evenly as possible. Ultimately, the key is to make it work for the type of luggage you are using, whether that be a backpack, a duffel bag, a tote bag, or something else.

When not traveling, consider rolling up your mat and placing it in a mat bag. This will help you keep the practice surface clean, crease-free, and for the most part unscathed, especially if you have a furry friend roaming around your home.

From Astura Yoga Mat Detox to TreeActiv Yoga Mat Spray to Moxe Yoga Mat Cleaner , there are no shortages of quality sprays lining shelves that can help eliminate sweat, stenches, and bacteria. You can also go the DIY route, mixing apple cider vinegar in a 1:4 ratio and adding a few drops of tea tree oil. No matter what route you choose, proper cleaning will help extend the life of your mat.

In the Yoga Capital of the World, This Wellness Retreat Honors Tradition

B efore The Beatles touched down in Rishikesh in 1968, most of the Western world had never heard of the Indian yoga and meditation capital. But for centuries, the most devout monks and yogis have been drawn to this secluded Himalayan spot along the Ganges River to start ashrams and develop new styles of yoga.

“It’s a seat of spiritual practice,” says Reema Saikia, senior yoga consultant and meditation teacher at Ananda in the Himalayas . “You cannot imagine how many spirituality seekers from around the world come to Rishikesh for yoga.”

The Beginnings of Yoga

Sanskrit for both “union” and “disciple,” there’s no way to put an exact start date or a founder on the practice of yoga, but Rishikesh is said to be its birthplace. Dating back more than 5,000 years, to its followers, it’s a traditional system rather than a form of exercise. “Yoga happens,” says Saikia. “It’s a state you arrive at. A wholesome feeling where your mind and body are aligned.”

Yoga can be found in ancient Hindu texts, and Rishikesh’s location, high in the Himalayas, considered close to heaven and along the sacred Ganges, adds to its spiritual importance. Over the centuries, India’s most devout have trekked here to meditate in its caves and spend their lives in its ashrams.

“Fifty years back, it was just holy men and mystics here,” says Saikia. “It was not a tourist site.” Now, there are myriad certified yoga schools where devotees from around the world come to get certified where the practice began.

But most parts of Rishikesh are still vegetarian, do not allow alcohol and shy away from over-consumerism. Those who grow up there are raised with yogic knowledge and are often called to ashram life.

In Bhutan, Luxury Hiking Adventures Have Replaced Spirituality

A spiritual center.

This spiritual town, discussed in folklore and sacred literature, has long been a pilgrimage site for Hindu worshippers. As the sun breaks over the mountains, it’s not uncommon to find people bathing in the rushing waters of the Ganges, cleansing themselves in worship to Shiva and Vishnu. On the weekends, monks flock to its boulders to sit and meditate to the soothing sounds.

Driving through town, you’ll dodge meandering cows and sadhu monks, spiritual people who have renounced the “worldly life” and practice monastic living, of which there are thousands in Rishikesh.

This yoga capital is also surrounded by one of India’s major pilgrimage sites, called Char-Dham. Consisting of four sacred Hindu places of worship — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — thousands come here to check these spiritual stops off their list. “These four Hindu pilgrimage sites are very, very important. People travel from all parts of the country to do this pilgrimage,” says Saikia.

Ananda in the Himalayas

Since 2000, Ananda in the Himalayas has arguably been India’s most lauded and luxurious wellness retreat. Sitting high above Rishikesh with sweeping views of the entire city and the snaking Ganges, it specializes in ancient Ayurvedic techniques. Here, celebrities and royalty have embarked on a multi-day wellness program ranging from weight management to yogic detox.

These can be life-changing holistic programs that aim to alter both body and mind. Ananda operates with the hope that guests will take these habits and practices and continue them in their everyday lives — especially yoga.

Yoga is among Ananda’s five main pillars, and guests can opt for a five to 21-day program dedicated to yoga . As the retreat says, this program’s goal is to “help you cultivate the ancient discipline of yogic practices to recharge yourself by enhancing clarity of thought. Every aspect of your mind, body and soul achieves a heightened sense of balance.”

Yoga at Ananda

A staff of seven dedicated yogis living in Rishikesh lead the daily yoga and meditation sessions. Each session is rooted in the yogic traditions of Rishikesh and Hatha yoga, a type of practice that supports balance.

But there are many other forms of yoga and meditation practiced in the domed open-air pavilion surrounded by trees and crying peacocks. There are private sessions that are a part of the individual programs, and there are also twice-daily complimentary group sessions.

Guests can choose from early morning sessions focused on energy activation or afternoon classes dedicated to deep breathing. Among the most beloved is Yoga Nidra. Essentially a guided meditation, this style of yoga involves lying still on a mat and slowly slipping into a type of conscious slumber where you balance between being alert and being asleep.

At the end of each session, Saikia leads guests in the gentle chanting of “Om.” And no matter which style you choose to practice, she says, “Yoga is designed to realize your true nature in spirit. It helps you know yourself. It’s all about centeredness.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
