Day 1 - Lisbon Lisbon Living

Arrive in the capital and get to know your new friends at the hotel in one of Lisbon’s most exciting neighborhoods.

After a welcome dinner with the group highlighted by stunning rooftop views, the evening is yours. Wander along narrow cobblestone streets and as you meander your way back, stop at any of the tiny bars nestled amongst the labyrinth of vibrant, red-roofed homes.

If you’re lucky, you can catch a Fado show as well—the beautiful, melancholy music echoes from barrooms and taverns across the nation. Just don’t let it bring you down; after all, you’re in Portugal.

FullSizeRender 324.jpg

Day 2 - Lisbon Oh Azulejos

Start the day with breakfast at the hotel to get the gears in that right-brain cranking; we're getting into the arts this morning.

By now, you've undoubtedly come across the colorfully complex tiles that line homes, shops, subway stations, and just about any other type of wall the Portuguese can find. Known as azulejos, these tiles have been kicking around this stretch of land since the 13th century when the Arabs invaded. With the rest of the crew, you're going to paint like a local and try your hand at some azulejo art.

The afternoon's free to wander the hills, and then you'll trade dinner for something a bit more fun as you explore the city's character and charm with a food and wine walking tour through one of Lisbon's trendiest neighborhoods.

FullSizeRender 163_edited.jpg

Day 3 - Lisbon  / Sintra High class

Today, we’re hopping on the train to Sintra. In the cool mountain air, you’ll set out on tuk-tuks and twist between homes, shops, palaces, and castles that date to the Middle Ages.

After checking out the Romanticist architecture of the Pena Palace from a mountaintop viewpoint, we’re heading into the stone spectacle of Quinta da Regaleira, arguably Sintra’s most impressive palace. Wander the gardens and then twist down into the Initiation Well to explore the spine-tinglingly spectacular underground grottos.

You’ll have lunch with friends before heading back to Lisbon. The evening is yours to explore the artsy enclave of Alfama; no one will judge you if you set out for more wine.

FTLO_Portugal_29 (1).jpg

  Day 4 - Lisbon Unwind

After a day twisting up and down Sintra’s hills, it’s time to unwind—the day is yours to chill out or head off exploring with friends.

If you decide to stay in the city, consider hopping in a cab to the north of town and checking out the National Tile Museum. Housed in an ancient convent that was restored after being reduced to rubble in the earthquake of 1755, this colorful stop has numerous exhibits showcasing azulejo, or the traditional tile work found all over Portugal.

If you’re in the mood for a beach day, head to the Cais do Sodré train station and take the short ride to the resort town of Cascais for an afternoon in the sand.

FullSizeRender 320.jpg

Day 5 - Lisbon / Evora Back in time

After breakfast, it’s time to get cooking. Rich, crumbly custard tarts are on the menu. A specialty in the region, these savory pastries, known locally as pastéis de nata, are smooth on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Then, it’s time to head out on the road toward Evora. The inland city is older than the Portuguese capital and is also a UNESCO Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon walking back in time on a guided tour of streets and alleys once inhabited by the Celts, Romans, Moors, and Visigoths. You’ll even stroll through the hauntingly beautiful Chapel of Bones, a 16th-century skeletal structure built by Franciscan monks.

After your deep dive into ancient times, head to a group dinner, and if you’ve still got the energy, follow it up with some fun and bar-hopping.

  Day 6 -  Evora  / Algarve beachbound

Fuel up on breakfast at the hotel in Evora before driving south to the Algarve, Portugal’s most spectacular beach region.

It’s a bit of a hike and this is Portugal after all, so we’ll pop off at a vineyard on the way down, and you can pop into some more of that famous Portuguese wine if you so desire (and if you feel up to it after a night at the bars).

We’ll get down to the Algarve by mid-afternoon, where you’ll check into your digs by the beach. Take the afternoon to soak up the sun or hop into the dazzling blue sea as it laps at the shore.

FullSizeRender 306.jpg

Day 7 - Algarve to the sea

Get out on the water and start exploring!  The endlessly beautiful coast of the Algarve is made up of jagged limestone walls and staggering caves chiseled by the sea. You’ll explore it all on a private, day-long boating adventure.

Lunch will be prepared on board, so the day truly belongs to you. Lounge with friends, swim through the balmy waters, and explore the remarkable rocky coast of Southern Portugal.

In the evening, we’ll all meet up for one final night of fun at our farewell dinner.

FullSizeRender 162_edited.jpg

Day 8 - Algarve farewell

Today is our last day in Portugal. We’ll share one final breakfast together before we all go our separate ways.

If you prefer to stick around to explore a bit on your own (which we recommend!), the hotel will be happy to store your bags.

If you're after more European fun beyond Portugal, head to Northern Spain and the Basque Country for amazing cuisine or to Sardinia for golden beach vibes!

Best of Central Europe

I though the Intrepid tour was fantastic. The group leader did a great job in looking after us and providing us with good orientation in all the countries we visited. The only point that could be improved, was in relation to accommodation. In Prague, five people were placed in the one hotel with one bathroom and toilet. This is not really ideal, however, when we raised this issue, our group leader went out of his way to provide an alternate accommodation for my husband and I. I felt that this was really good and we were very pleased with the outcome. The other tour participants were great and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in a great holiday. Thank you Zsolt.

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days Tour

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

We had a fabulous trip with ChooseBalkans and would highly recommend them for your next trip to the region. And, we highly recommend you visit Albania: lots of fresh and delicious food, beautiful places to visit, and ancient and contemporary history to learn about. Sirma has been responsive and proactively communicative the entire time we worked with them. They put together a wonderful, affordable, and personalized tour for us on quite short notice (because of our schedule) and found us a top-notch tour guide, Gerion. They combined several of their pre-packaged tours based on our requests, and organized a 10-day trip from Tirana to Athens that included 6 UNESCO sites, three countries, three opportunities to hike, time to explore towns and cities, recommendations of where to eat (we are vegetarians, and yes, there was plenty for us to eat in the Balkans!), and more. ChooseBalkans and Gerion arranged the travel, tour, and hotel logistics and regularly asked if there was anything else we needed. The name of the company is our final comment - Choose Balkans!

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Hey guys it was just perfect! Everything! From organization to beautiful places that we visited. I was all around the world but Albania is something else. Wine, sea, food, local people, history, cities - perfection! The places where we stayed were beautiful and clean and tour guide was lovely, talkative and kind. Recommendation to everybody!

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past Tour

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

10-Day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour Tour

10-Day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour

Nick was a terrific guide, the very best. He really knows Ireland and gave us great information, fun stories and he was a highlight all by himself. There were small glitches with a couple of hotels, and it was a big disappointment for me to miss the sheep herding demonstration which was supposed to be the first Wed but got moved to Tues without any of us knowing. I had a cold and missed that ONE late afternoon outing (thinking the others were going to see a couple of villages) which I would never have done, had I known. Ireland is lovely and we hit so many highlights, it was a great experience overall. In hindsight I might have done better on a tour with more hikes and less bus but that is hindsight,

Premium Turkey in Depth Tour

Premium Turkey in Depth

This trip has totally exceeded my expectations. This has been mainly due to Ugur our tour leader who was also our guide. His leadership and knowledge has been extraordinary and we had an absolute ball. We learned so much about Turkey, its history, its people and culture including its delicious cuisine. The ancient places we visited and and the history of them was passed on to us by Ugur in an easy to understand way that encouraged us to find out more and ask questions. The accommodation was mainly in the old town, close to the sights and of exceptional quality. Another highlight was our day boat trip to the Kekova Sunken City that provided us with the opportunity to relax and have a swim in the turquoise water. All in all a great trip that gives you an exceptional advertiser for going and see more of Turkey.

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP Tour

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP

I have just completed the 7 countries in 14 days tour with Victor Tours. There was a great mix of being shown the important tourist spots and giving you some free time to explore for yourself. The tour guide Theodor was a breath of fresh air. He was inciteful, helpful and knowledgeable during the tour. He answered all questions honestly, especially around some sensitive subjects. We had breakfast at all the hotels that was substantial. The accommodation, because we moved around ranged from tremendous to very good. Not one hotel was lacking. It has given me an improved understanding and knowledge of the area, their problems both past and present. The tour gives you a great start on all the 7 countries and if you want to explore them more you then have a starting point. My favorite countries were Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia, which I will be exploring further. Alexander and his team, from Victor Tours was tremendous in his assistance both before the tour and during it. There were no 'hick ups' at all. I would recommend Victor Tours and this particular tour to anyone who want to travel to these countries. Thanks again Alexander and Theodor for the great memories.

Great Bike Tour of the Baltics (fully guided from Vilnius to Tallinn 2024) Tour

Great Bike Tour of the Baltics (fully guided from Vilnius to Tallinn 2024)

Although the "biking" was not on my bucket list (was talked into the trip by our brother/sister-in-law), but we had a very great time! Mindaugas was a great guide, and our driver was also great. The hotels were fine, the food was excellent, and the biking was better than I'd expected! Our fellow companions were delightful. The history and tours of the Baltic countries was wonderful. It would have been nice to have had a microphone hook-up during our guided walking tours in order to hear all the information. It would have been nice to be able to buy t-shirts (Mindaugas wore a few) that displayed a map of the tour. I think it would have been nice if we could have ordered them before or after the trip. Is it possible to do so now? Otherwise, I'd never done anything like this before, and may do it again at some point.

The Balkan Adventure Tour -12 days/11 nights from Skopje Tour

The Balkan Adventure Tour -12 days/11 nights from Skopje

We loved the hikes; only wished they could have been longer. We wish we didn't have to spend so much time driving, but we understand that there is no other way to see so many things in so few days. We would have liked to spend more time in Sarajevo. Don't schedule Nis for a Monday since the best sites are closed on Monday. Overall, it was a great introduction to the history and natural beauty of the Balkans, but be prepared for a lot of driving.

Central Europe Group Rail Tour (18-35)

I am so happy I took this trip! I love that there is a planned activity in each city but you also get free days to explore on your own or with new friends. Every city was stunning and I met some great people as well. The thing that made me want to leave a review the most was honesty our tour leader , Cristina was a delight and a perfect balance for our group. She made this trip more memorable then I could have imagined and had great tips for each city too!!!!! Truly an unforgettable experience I would highly recommend. I wish I did the whole Europe tour instead of just central Europe.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Europe

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!
A great fast-paced tour that was well led by our wonderful guide Ivan!

Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience you’d like to have and which destinations you’ll be visiting.

  • Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheit—while in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
  • Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.
  • Winter. A wonderful time to take a European tour is the winter. During this time of year, travelers can stroll through festive holiday markets, visit excellent museums, and settle in for tasty meals of seasonal specialties. To take the stress out of planning a winter trip, we even offer Europe trip packages specifically designed for visiting  Christmas markets .

One of the main benefits of joining our guided tours of Europe is having the opportunity to visit must-see sites with an expert leading the way. When you go guided with Go Ahead we’ll help you skip the long lines at popular landmarks. Here are some attractions you’ll get the opportunity to see on our group tours of Europe:

  • The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
  • The National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy
  • St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy
  • The Alhambra in Granada, Spain
  • The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain
  • La Sagrada Família church in Barcelona, Spain
  • The Acropolis in Athens, Greece
  • The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland
  • The Titanic Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • The Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary
  • Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria
  • The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway
  • Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark

We recommend you spend at least six days in Europe. While our most popular Europe tours run from 10–14 days, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one country or visit a handful of cities in neighboring countries.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europe’s Christmas Markets  and to experience countries’ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.

Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
  • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Europe’s best tours for active young adults

While do-it-yourself backpacking trips to Europe are still popular among young people, a significant number of college students and travelers in their 20s and early 30s opt to book guided youth tours. The perks of youth escorted tours are the same as other escorted tours. However, to attract cost conscious students and other young people, most youth tour companies make use of budget accommodations like campgrounds or hotels located outside city centers.

These youth-oriented trips are infused with a great sense of fun and camaraderie, and they are designed with the budget traveler in mind. Guided sightseeing excursions are balanced with ample free time to explore. Solo travelers are welcomed with singles share programs that match roommates of the same gender. Participants often come away from these tours with new friendships and future travel companions.

There are two tour operators catering to younger travelers: Contiki offers tours solely to people age 18-35, and Trafalgar reserves certain departures for travelers age 21-38.

Looking to explore the timeless landscapes of Europe? Want to explore the national parks of the U.S.? Or the exotic treasures of Asia and beyond? We offer an incredible array of active vacations worldwide. Discover your dream trip – The world’s most intriguing countries await you with many different itineraries to fit your travel needs.  Our world is full of incredible destinations, each with hundreds of different sights, sounds, tastes and smells which help form your own vacation experience.

You’ll be stunned by the pyramids in Egypt, breathless after climbing the Eiffel Tower in France and exhilarated after bungee jumping in Australia.

Tour inclusions vary, but most include all accommodations, most breakfasts and  some dinners, transportation during the trip, the services of experienced guides, and many attraction admissions, guided tours, and other excursions. Travelers have the option to select lower-priced tours with accommodations in campgrounds and other budget lodgings or pay more for tours that include stays in higher-end accommodations.

Europe trip destinations for young adults

If you’re a young adult looking for an adventure, Europe is your perfect destination. Europe has a rich history, beautiful architecture, and diverse cultures. It’s also very easy to travel around Europe with its well-connected transportation systems.

Europe comprises 44 countries, each with its unique culture, food, language, and architecture. From Prague’s stunning Gothic buildings to Amsterdam’s picturesque canals, there’s something for everyone in Europe.

Many European cities are also very walkable, which makes exploring them even more enjoyable. Another advantage of traveling to Europe is that it’s relatively safe compared to other regions worldwide.

Pickpocketing can be a problem in some touristy areas. Still, if you take necessary precautions, such as keeping your valuables close to you and being aware of your surroundings, you should be fine. In addition to exploring famous landmarks and museums, you can have many other unique experiences while in Europe.

You can attend music festivals in Barcelona or watch street performers on the Charles Bridge in Prague. You can also try regional foods such as paella in Valencia or schnitzel in Vienna.

Europe is an ideal destination for young adults seeking adventure and cultural immersion. With so many countries and cities to choose from, there’s always somewhere new to discover and experience.

Importance of traveling for young adults

For many young adults, traveling is a crucial rite of passage and a chance to explore new cultures, meet new people, and learn about themselves. It’s an opportunity to leave their comfort zones and experience the world beyond their backyards. Here are some reasons why traveling is important for young adults.

Firstly, traveling enhances personal growth and development. It provides a chance to see things from a different perspective and learn about new cultures, languages, foods, customs, and ways of life.

Exposure to diverse backgrounds can broaden one’s worldview by challenging preconceived notions and stereotypes. Secondly, traveling can improve social skills by providing opportunities for young adults to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s fellow travelers or locals in the destinations they visit, interacting with new people not only helps individuals develop communication skills but also increases empathy towards others. Traveling can improve mental health by escaping daily stressors like work or school.

As individuals explore new cities or landscapes they may have never seen before; it opens up doors for adventure while reducing stress levels that come with daily routine activities. From seeing breathtaking views in Santorini or swimming in crystal clear waters in Turkey, every travel destination offers something unique to uplift one’s mood.

Traveling offers many benefits for young adults beyond just seeing new places or taking pictures for social media posts. It’s an opportunity for personal growth through exposure to different cultures while improving social skills by meeting diverse groups of people from around the globe leading to improved mental well-being that every individual deserves.

Factors to consider when choosing destinations (budget, interests, safety, etc.)

When it comes to planning a trip to Europe , there are several factors that young adults should consider before choosing a destination. Budget, interests, and safety are key factors that can make or break your experience abroad.

Budget is one of the most important considerations when planning a European trip. Young adults on a tight budget may want to consider more affordable destinations like Budapest or Ljubljana.

These cities offer plenty of attractions and activities at a fraction of the cost of some popular tourist destinations like Paris or London. When budgeting for your trip, consider the cost of transportation, accommodations, food and drink, and any sightseeing activities you plan.

Another important factor to consider is your interests. Are you interested in art and history?

Then Florence or Rome might be ideal destinations for you. If you’re into nightlife and partying, Amsterdam or Berlin could be more your style.

And if outdoor adventure is what you’re after, consider visiting places like Santorini or Stockholm , where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. Safety should always be a top priority when traveling abroad.

While most European countries are considered safe for tourists, it’s still important to research beforehand. Make sure you know which areas are safe to visit at night and how to stay safe while using public transportation.

It’s always wise to keep an eye on your belongings while out in public areas, as pickpocketing can, unfortunately, be common in certain cities. Considering these key factors when choosing a destination for your European adventure as a young adult can help ensure you have an unforgettable experience abroad without breaking the bank or compromising safety!

Florence, Italy

most visited tourist attractions in europe florence cathedral florence italy

Florence, Italy, is a must-visit destination for any young adult traveling to Europe . The city is famous for being the birthplace of the Renaissance and boasts some of the world’s most impressive art and architecture. Whether you’re an art history buff or just looking to soak up some Italian culture, Florence has something for everyone.

One of the top attractions in Florence is the Uffizi Gallery. This museum houses an extensive collection of Renaissance art, including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.

The galleries can get quite crowded during peak tourist season, so booking your tickets online in advance is best. If you need more time or are interested in waiting in line, consider taking a guided tour of the Uffizi to ensure you see all its highlights.

Another must-see attraction in Florence is the Duomo di Firenze (Florence Cathedral). This massive Gothic cathedral features stunning architecture and intricate details that will leave you breathless.

It’s possible to climb to the top of the dome for panoramic views of Florence – just be prepared for a steep climb up narrow staircases! If you’re interested in learning more about the cathedral’s history and design, consider taking a guided tour or visiting one of its museums.

Of course, only a trip to Florence would be complete with indulging in delicious Italian food. Be sure to try some traditional Tuscan dishes like ribollita (a bread soup), pappa al pomodoro (a tomato-based bread stew), or bistecca alla Fiorentina (a thick steak served rarely).

You’ll also want to sample some gelato from one of Florence’s many artisanal gelaterias – my favorite is Gelateria dei Neri near Santa Croce. Whether you’re interested in art, history, or food (or all three!), Florence is a destination that shouldn’t be missed on your European adventure.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

Travel Tips for Young Adults

Transportation options (budget airlines, trains, buses, etc.).

There are many transportation options when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Depending on your budget and travel preferences, you might want to consider taking advantage of the following affordable means of transportation:

Firstly, budget airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet are excellent options for those who want to fly between European countries quickly and cheaply. With fares starting at just a few euros one way, it takes time to beat these airlines’ value.

However, it’s important to remember that budget airlines often charge extra baggage and seat selection fees. Additionally, be prepared for long lines at the airport and strict baggage weight restrictions.

Secondly, trains are another popular option among young travelers. The Eurail Pass is a great way to see multiple countries on one trip while enjoying an extensive European rail network.

With various types of passes available, from 3 days up to 3 months, you can customize your itinerary according to your needs. Moreover, train travel provides scenic views and is often more comfortable than flying.

Taking buses is another budget-friendly option when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Companies like Flixbus offer routes throughout many countries with prices starting at just a couple of euros per journey.

While buses may take longer than planes or trains, they can be more flexible with their schedules and sometimes have more direct routes between cities. No matter which mode of transportation you choose when exploring Europe as a young adult traveler, plenty of affordable options will help stretch your budget further without compromising on the quality of your travels!

Accommodation options (hostels, Airbnb, budget hotels, etc.)

Accommodation is one of the most significant expenses on any trip, and for young adults traveling on a budget, finding affordable accommodation options is crucial. Luckily, Europe offers various accommodation options suitable for all budgets and preferences. Here are some popular choices:

Hostels:  Hostels are an excellent option for young travelers who want to save money while meeting other travelers. Most hostels offer shared dorm rooms with bunk beds or private rooms with shared bathrooms.

Some hostels also have communal spaces such as kitchens and lounges where travelers can socialize and cook meals. Hostel prices vary depending on the location, but they’re generally more affordable than hotels.

Airbnb:  Airbnb is a popular alternative to traditional hotels, allowing travelers to rent apartments or rooms from locals. Airbnb properties are often cheaper than hotels, offering more space and privacy than hostels.

Additionally, staying in an apartment allows travelers to experience local life firsthand by living in neighborhoods rather than touristy areas. Budget Hotels: Budget hotels are also an option for young adults traveling on a budget.

These hotels offer clean, basic rooms with essential amenities such as a bed, bathroom, and Wi-Fi access. While budget hotels may not be as luxurious as higher-end options, they provide a comfortable stay at an affordable price.

When it comes to choosing accommodation in Europe, young adults traveling on a budget should first identify their priorities (privacy vs. socializing) and interests (touristy vs. local areas), then consider the available options (hostels vs. apartments, rentals vs. budget hotels). Whichever alternative one chooses, always confirm the location’s safety before booking any accommodations in unfamiliar places or neighborhoods.

Saving money while traveling (food, sightseeing, transportation, etc.)

When traveling as a young adult, money can be tight, and it’s important to be smart about your spending. Here are some tips on how to save money while traveling in Europe.

First up, food. Eating out can be expensive, especially in touristy areas.

One way to save money on food is by cooking for yourself. If you’re staying in a hostel or Airbnb, look for accommodations with kitchens to make your meals.

Another option is to grab groceries from a local supermarket or street market and picnic in a park or other scenic spot. Not only will this save you money, but it’s also a great way to enjoy the local culture and scenery.

Next up is sightseeing. Europe is full of amazing sights and attractions with an entry fee.

However, there are ways around these fees if you research beforehand. Many museums offer free entry on certain days or during specific hours.

Some cities also offer free walking tours led by locals who share their knowledge and insights about the city’s history and culture. Additionally, many churches are open to the public for free and are often filled with beautiful artwork and architecture.

Transportation can consume a big chunk of your budget if you must be more careful. While taxis may seem convenient, they’re often very expensive compared to public transportation options like buses and trains, which can easily take you around the city at an affordable cost (although buses may take longer than taxis as they do multiple stops).

If you plan and book tickets online in advance for trains or budget airlines between cities (or countries), you could save significantly more than purchasing same-day tickets from train stations/airports directly. By being strategic about food choices, sightseeing activities, and transportation methods, you can stretch your budget further while still having an incredible time exploring Europe!

Staying safe while traveling

Safety should always be a top priority when traveling to a new place.

Europe is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, but it’s important to take precautions to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Firstly, research the destination and learn about any potential safety concerns.

This could include dangerous areas of the city, scams to watch out for, or risky activities to avoid. It’s also good to check government travel advisories before you go.

While in Europe, ensure you always keep your valuables safe. This includes keeping your passport and other important documents in a secure location – consider using a money belt or hidden pocket.

Be aware of your surroundings and monitor your belongings when in public places. In addition, it’s important to stay alert and aware when out at night or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Avoid walking alone late at night and stick to well-lit areas with plenty of people. Consider taking public transportation or calling a taxi to return to your hotel after dark.

Overall, staying safe while traveling in Europe is largely about using common sense and being prepared. By taking simple precautions and staying vigilant throughout your trip, you can have a fun and safe experience exploring this exciting continent!

Meeting locals and other young travelers

One of the best parts of traveling as a young adult is the opportunity to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s locals or other young travelers, there are plenty of ways to connect with people and make new friends during your Europe trip . Meeting locals can be a great way to learn about the culture of the places you’re visiting and get insider tips on things to do.

One of my favorite ways to connect with locals is through Couchsurfing. This website allows you to stay with local hosts for free and get a taste of living in their city.

It’s also a great way to meet other travelers since many hosts organize events or outings for their guests. If Couchsurfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to meet locals.

Joining a language exchange group or taking a cooking class can be fun to meet people who share your interests. Another option is conversing with people while exploring–whether at a cafe, museum, or park.

Of course, meeting other young travelers is also an important part of the experience. Many hostels organize social events like pub crawls or walking tours to help guests meet each other.

You can also join online travel communities like Couchsurfing or Meetup.com, which often have groups for young backpackers traveling through Europe. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself – chances are others are looking for new friends too!

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The 10 Best European Cities for Families, From a Toddler Mom on the Go

E mbarking on a European adventure with a toddler might seem like a tall order. But trust me, as a frequent traveler and a toddler mama, I’ve figured out how to turn Europe into quite the playground. I moved to Copenhagen after marrying a Dane, and since then, our son Aksel and I have taken Europe by storm, debunking the idea that parenting clips your travel wings.

“We see more families with young kids inquiring about Europe now,” said Charlie Neville, marketing director of JayWay Travel , specializing in custom European tours. “Millennials are [having babies] and love to travel to off-the-beaten-path European destinations , so it makes sense they want to bring their babies along.” Yet, as a baby-making millennial myself, I’ve encountered my share of raised eyebrows when we travel with Aksel. Sure, traveling with a kid sounds like a dream — but a diaper-laden one most people don’t want to take on.

But that’s why I continually try to prove the naysayers wrong, showing that some destinations make traveling with a little one fairly easy. I’ve explored tons of cities with our toddler, and have my go-to list of the 10 best cities for a family trip to Europe. The best destinations for a family trip to Europe have plenty to do for kids, but also have enough history and culture to keep adults equally excited.

Travel’s not over, baby — it’s just getting started.

Lausanne, Switzerland

 -kids in switzerland

There are plenty of outdoorsy areas for kids to run amok in Lausanne. Photo: Anna Nahabed /Shutterstock

Lausanne is an underrated Swiss city that captures the essence of Swiss tranquility. With stunning views over Lake Geneva and a backdrop as appealing to kids as adults, the hour-long train ride from Geneva might be the most scenic journey you’ll ever take. And the cheese is fabulous everywhere you go.

What To Do: Plunge into the world of sports at the Olympic Museum , where interactive fun meets educational insight, potentially sparking a budding athletic passion in any youngsters. The town is very outdoorsy, with lots of room to wander through Lausanne’s cobblestoned old town or breathe the fresh Swiss air at multiple lakeside parks , perfect for letting children romp and parents relax. To extend your exploration, consider taking a family boat ride to Evian or Montreux, mixing effortless travel with breathtaking scenery. And if you’re visiting in early winter, the Christmas markets are a must.

Where to stay: Overlooking Lake Geneva, Lausanne Palace feels like a fairytale that caters to adults and children. The hotel’s rooms offer grand views, and on-site babysitting services allow parents to explore the spa or enjoy a quiet meal while the baby is in good hands. It’s definitely a splurge, but it’s near attractions like the Olympic Museum and the gorgeous lakeside promenades.

Florence, Italy

family trip to europe - florence family

Photo: Ermolaev Alexander /Shuttertsock

Ah, Florence. It’s known for negronis and a rich cultural heritage ( and gorgeous parks ), but did you know it’s also a haven for traveling with children? Its compact layout is perfect for walking with a stroller, and every corner is steeped in history. And the Italian adore babies.

What To Do: Delight young minds at the Palazzo Vecchio’s children’s museum with interactive exhibits that breathe life into historical tales (that are equally captivating for adults). Along the whimsical paths of Boboli Gardens at the Uffizi Gallery, every fountain and statue invites childish imagination to run wild – and is a great place for kiddos to run wild, too. And don’t miss the Bardini Gardens , with a quieter pace and impromptu puppet shows.

Basing yourself around the family-friendly Oltrarno neighborhood is a good choice, with an artisan feel and plenty of stores showcasing traditional Florentine crafts. You’ll find plenty of quaint cafes to stop by for a gelato break (or a swift diaper change).

Where to stay: Sina Villa Medici is in Florence’s historical center and encapsulates the essence of Italian luxury and family-friendly convenience. After all, the Sina Hotels brand is still entirely family-owned and operated. Rooms are spacious, making them ideal for strollers and sprawled toys with extra room for modern comforts like in-room cribs. There’s a secure outdoor pool surrounded by lush gardens, so kids can splash about while adults indulge in some me-time at the spa or the hotel’s restaurants. It’s also close to many of Florence’s top family attractions, including the Palazzo Vecchio.

Tallinn, Estonia

old town tallinn - family trip to europe

Tallinn is another underrated capital that blends medieval charm with modern amenities. The city’s compact size makes it especially appealing for families with children, offering easy access to various activities. It somehow impeccably preserves its past while simultaneously looking forward.

What To Do : Visit Lennusadam (the Seaplane Harbour), where interactive maritime exhibits and a real submarine tour await eager explorers (and what toddler doesn’t love a submarine?) The Open Air Museum offers a glimpse into Estonian rural life with interactive reenactments. And at the expansive Kadriorg Park , you can let your kid run amok with hands-on learning at the Energy Discovery Centre , with more than 100 science-based activities.

Where to stay: Centrally located Kalev Spa Hotel is a play paradise for kids, and quite honestly, a relief for parents. The hotel has an on-site waterpark with slides and pools, perfect for entertaining children of all ages — and adults (those waterslides are something else). It’s also within easy walking distance of Tallinn’s charming Old Town.

Helsinki, Finland

helsinki - little girl playing in town

Photo: Ekaterina Pokrovsky /Shutterstock

Helsinki stands out as a Nordic haven, with a similar vibe in ways to some of Scandinavia’s heavy-metal-music-love and-black-coffee-drinking cities. But it has a leg up for families, with modern design and child-friendly spaces. The city is vibrant and approachable, with various public spaces inviting playful exploration and healthy surroundings that ensure fresh air everywhere you go.

What To Do : Start with a whirl at Linnanmäki Amusement Park , followed by a deep dive into the marine world at the Sea Life Aquarium . For a dose of history and scenic beauty, ferry over to the fortress island of Suomenlinna , a UNESCO site that doubles as a perfect picnic spot.

Back on the mainland, the Design District and family workshops at the Design Museum are an ideal creative outlet for little hands, and a great way to burn some energy. Helsinki’s cuisine is diverse and caters to all tastes, with many restaurants offering child-friendly options and high chairs.

Where to stay: The Hotel Maria has a family-oriented approach to Nordic hospitality, set amid Finland’s stunning landscapes. Parents will appreciate the ability to genuinely relax, especially if you book a spa suite with a steam room or sauna to use while the baby is napping in the provided crib. If you book a babysitter for the night, you don’t need to go far for fine dining, as the onsite restaurant Lilja and the more understated Garden Terrace are highly rated. Fortunately, the latter is low key enough to bring the kiddos along. There are also lots of pretty Airbnbs throughout Helsinki .

With actual Spanish spice, Barcelona bursts with life and sensory overload, from the fantastical creations of Gaudí to the bustling marketplaces and sandy beaches. The Mediterranean getaway fills your (tapas) plate for parents and kiddos alike.

What To Do : Families should be sure to explore the fantastical Park Güell , where unconventional architect Antoni Gaudí ‘s playful architectural styles will captivate young minds. The green expanse of Parc de la Ciutadella is home to the Barcelona Zoo, and Barceloneta Beach has plenty of child-friendly facilities. And if you’re feeling brave, consider getting lost in the Gothic Quarter (though you’ll probably want a baby carrier, rather than a stroller).

Where to stay: El Palace Hotel is a top choice for any traveler heading to Barcelona, but especially for families willing to splurge a bit while visiting the city. It’s in the chic Eixample district and close to major attractions. Many rooms connect, and hotel amenities great for kids include special children’s menus and safe garden areas for play. Cribs and babysitting services are available, and the upscale but still down-to-Earth ambiance is a great balanced for parents and children.

Dresden, Germany

family trip to europe - winter in dresden germany

Dresden may not be the first place you’d think of for a family trip to Europe, but the capital of Saxony is an excellent place for a relaxing family holiday. It mixes lush greenery with mid-century architecture entirely rebuilt post-WWII. It’s suitable for families looking for cultural immersion without the rush (or the prices) of larger European cities – and parents, the beer pours are quite generous.

What To Do : Adults and kids alike will love Zwinger Palace ‘s grand architecture and interactive exhibits. The city’s renowned puppet theater is one of the biggest in the world and an ideal place to catch a magical performance, blending entertainment with rich narratives that fascinate children. Also worth a visit is the innovative German Hygiene Museum , where exhibits on health and the human body are presented in an interactive format suitable for curious young minds.

Where to stay: Facing Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, Residenz am Zwinger has luxurious apartments and studios that feel high end but are still comfortable for families. Helpfully, rooms fully equipped kitchens and expansive terraces, which are a great place for an outdoor stroller nap. It’s an ideal choice if you’re staying for longer than a few days, as it allows for easy home cooking and units have laundry facilities. It feels like a home away from home — well, if your home was near significant sites like the world-famous Semper Opera House and the Green Vault , that is.

Porto, Portugal

Just like Port wine and blue cheese, Porto’s coastal allure pairs deliciously with its deep-seated history, creating one of the best cities for a family trip to Europe on the western side of the continent. From its famed port wine cellars to panoramic river views and intimate historical streets, Porto has plenty of opportunities for family-friendly cultural immersion.

What To Do : Start your day with the babies with a panoramic tram ride along the Douro River on the Passeio Alegre/No. 1 line, capturing the essence of Porto’s historic districts. Families may want to dive into Portugal’s maritime history at the World of Discoveries, a sort of interactive theater where families ride boats through the colorful exhibits. (Information is suitable for all ages and available in multiple languages, including English). And for an unscheduled afternoon, relax in in the Ribeira district, where the vibrant street life and inevitable people-watching will entertain parents and kids.

Where to stay: Village by Boa is a contemporary “apartment hotel” perfect for traveling with kiddos, especially if there are multiple in the pack as units have more room than your average hotel. It has family-friendly amenities, including spacious suites with kitchenettes for preparing toddler meals or midnight snacks. The hotel’s central location makes it easy to visit attractions like the Porto Wine Cellars or take scenic strolls along the Douro River.

Venice, Italy

Venice is chaotic , but in the most picturesque way. It’s best enjoyed in the quieter months of low season, without cars and bikes (and relentless fanny pack-clad cruise ship guests ). Don’t visit the “City of Water” in high season with a child, or your anxiety will skyrocket. Another tip: wear a BabyBjorn if your kiddo isn’t fully walking, as Venice, with all its staircase bridges, can be cumbersome with a stroller. However, Venice’s public transportation system is stroller-friendly, with most vaporetto (water taxi) stops equipped with ramps for easy access.

What To Do : Drift along the iconic canals on a vaporetto ride, giving your toddler a splashy perspective of Venice’s storied architecture. Explore the peaceful Lido for some beach time or discover the less-trodden charms of Cannaregio (one of the city’s northern neighborhoods) or the vibrant island of Burano, with its brightly colored houses. At the Giardini della Biennale (Biennale Gardens), interactive art installations make for a perfect family day. Leave plenty of time to stroll through local piazzas where the can kids mingle and play and parents can unwind with an Aperol spritz (after all, Venice is where the spritz cocktail was born).

Where to stay: Sina Centurion Palace on the city’s Grand Canal mixes Venetian Gothic allure with contemporary chic, with similar touches as its Florentine counterpart. The hotel has family-friendly offerings like spacious rooms, children’s meal options, and babysitting services. Unique to this location is a private dock, allowing families to hop on a gondola ride from the hotel’s doorstep (and without fighting crowds in the summers).

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam’s idyllic canals, vibrant street scenes, and forward-thinking architecture are a visual feast for everyone, including kids. Its landscape is interlaced with bike-friendly paths and bridges, creating an adventure for kids and a relaxed pace for parents to enjoy the more G-rated side of the city.

What To Do : Book tickets to the Van Gogh Museum with child-centric tours that turn art history into a vivid tale, as well as a museum-wide “treasure hunt .” On the family-focused canal boat tour, try to grab a window seat to offer kids a serene and engaging look at Amsterdam’s storied architecture. The city has plenty of food markets and child-friendly cafes, where Dutch culinary delights meet casual, cozy atmospheres perfect for family downtime and hot cocoa breaks.

Learning a few basic Dutch phrases, such as “ dank u wel ” (thank you) and “ alstublieft ” (please), can go a long way in making your interactions with locals more pleasant (and be fun for kids to practice).

Where to stay: The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht Hotel is a superb choice for families visiting Amsterdam, blending imaginative design with family-friendly comforts and drawing inspiration from the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. The hotel is filled with playful and eclectic decor that captivates kids and adults, with spacious suites and garden-view rooms that can comfortably house three people. Larger families can ask about options for connecting rooms.

Edinburgh, Scotland

family trip to europe - edinburgh park

Edinburgh combines historical allure with child-friendly attractions, making it like Disney World, but without the Mickey Mouse-levels of anxiety and crowds. From its dramatic hilltop castles to intriguing underground tours, the city offers a captivating mix of history and adventure with lots of unique places for kids.

What To Do : When taking the tots to Edinburgh, begin the visit with a trip to Edinburgh Castle . Perched dramatically on an extinct volcanic crag, the castle provides a lesson in Scottish history. Be sure to ask for a kids’ scavenger hunt form at the entrance gate if your kiddos are running and reading already, as it gives the wee ones a kid-friendly way to stay engaged while visiting the large museum.

For outdoor fun, climb Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano, for another spectacular view of Edinburgh. The hike is manageable for families and provides a great way to burn off some energy. Families with slightly older (and braver) kids may want to book a daytime ghost tour of the city, with a more family-friendly approach than the evening tours that may be macabre enough to spook some adults.
