Traveling experiences - brand ambassadors

Travel brand ambassador programs reward a company’s customers or non-staff representatives with perks, such as discounts, upgrades and other rewards, for representing the brand in essential, public ways. Brand ambassador marketing cultivates long-term company/influencer relationships by benefiting both parties. We are firm believers that just about can brand can benefit from a well-managed ambassador program .

Today, we are focusing on travel as so many people are planning post-pandemic trips or visiting their loved ones for the holidays. If you are planning to launch a brand ambassador program, strengthen the one you have, or join one yourself, you should study some successful examples. Remember, your program can and should be as unique as your company, and our platform streamlines the management process.

Airbnb Ambassador Program

Airbnb, the online marketplace for vacation rentals and homestays, has created a sophisticated ambassador program that aptly rewards those accepted into their program. Of course, you need to be a successful host in your own right before you apply to the ambassador program. You must also strongly believe in the company’s methods. If you are a devoted Airbnb host who believes they can help others begin hosting, you should apply for the position on the company’s website.

The company only names you an ambassador if they consider you an exceptional host. If you are accepted as an ambassador, aka a Superhost, you will refer people to the program whom you think would make great hosts. You would then guide them through the process and help them as they host their first guests. The company will then pay you for every new host you refer. You’ll earn more per referral this way than you would outside of the ambassador program. As an added incentive to prospective hosts, your referrals also get a cash reward when they begin hosting. The program attracts and rewards excellence and makes hosting even more lucrative than it already is.

EF Ultimate Break Ambassador Program

Ambassador exploring in Bangkok roads

EF has been a mainstay of the educational travel business for over half a century. In fact, several generations of your family may have taken part in these exciting and culturally rich tours. But you don’t have to be a student to be a part of the EF experience. You can apply to be an ambassador.

EF rewards its ambassadors with exciting world travel opportunities while making it easier for their friends or students to travel as well. The company looks for certain criteria in their ambassadors. It targets 18-29-year-old people who love to travel and who want to spread the word about EF trips. Former student travelers are ideal candidates, but others can participate as well.  You should be the person in your group that others turn to for travel advice and who is an expert at using social media if you are interested in applying.

The rewards are excellent, and travel is the best perk. Earning a free trip is straightforward. People who book their trips while using your unique promo code will get a $100 discount. When 15 people have booked using this code, you will earn your free travel experience.

You can also earn other rewards, including a dedicated EF Ultimate Break Support squad, extra promotion of your social media posts and a chance at exclusive Ambassador Trips at special discounted prices. This ambassador program is one of the best ways to travel to exotic locations on someone else’s dime. You can enjoy yourself while helping educate students about the world.

Wandr Ambassador Program

Wandr is a travel app company that lets travelers share their past itineraries through photos. Users can then literally follow in each other’s footsteps and share in the Wandr community. Once you download the app, you import the trip photos you want to share to an interactive map . Wandr then creates an itinerary that shows the route you took and how long you spent at each stop. Community members who like the look of your trip and save it and plan their own adventure. You can also look at other posted itineraries and add them to your Wandrlist. Members give each other advice about what to expect at each stop, which enriches the travel experience.

The company looks for Ambassadors who are experienced travelers and have already created quality content. To join the program, you have to fill out an application and then wait for an invitation to their private Facebook community. Once you’ve been accepted, you will have chances to earn money for doing what you’ve been doing for free: traveling and sharing your experiences.  The company also pays for travel through third-party vendors and helps you establish paid relationships with their trusted partners. You can also create and sell itineraries on the app.

Envoy by Four Seasons

The Four Seasons has long been synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Many consider these hotels to be a destination unto themselves. Their brand ambassador marketing is in keeping with their impeccable reputation.

Envoy by Four Seasons is one of the more unique travel ambassador programs. It looks for craftspeople, artists and storytellers from around the world who can share their artistic vision of what it means to “be in the moment.” Envoy then connects them to different cultures, places and experiences. Does that description sound a little lofty? Sure it does, but the program offers the experience of a lifetime with the advantage of luxurious accommodations.

If you are accepted into Envoy, Four Seasons will invite you to one of their locations that especially inspires you. You might explore the beaches of Bali or climb the peaks of the French Alps. Want to check out Beijing or Moscow? Apply to the program. Brand Ambassadors: What Brands and Influencers Need to Know

By Eric Stoen on February 23, 2021 • Last Updated February 25, 2021 This post may contain affiliate links. Read my Disclosure here .

Brand Ambassador Definition

What is a Brand Ambassador? Loosely speaking, a brand ambassador is someone who represents your company in a positive light, generating increased brand awareness and, ideally, increased revenue.

With social media, brand ambassadorships have increased exponentially. However, there are many types of brand ambassadorships, and they’re not equal.

I’ve been a long-term unpaid ambassador for one brand ( AFAR ) and a paid brand ambassador for Travelocity , Universal Orlando , Mizzen+Main and Thomson Family Adventures . I have one more coming up as well that I’m very excited about.

Universal Orlando Tips - In Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Orlando

But I’ve turned down (or ignored) hundreds of brand ambassador offers. Why? Because they weren’t well-structured programs. Based on my experience, this is what I look for:

Elements of a Successful Brand Ambassador Program

1. it’s a paid brand ambassadorship.

I’m great being an unpaid ambassador for AFAR given that it was the first ambassadorship I accepted and there aren’t recurring deliverables, but since then I’ve only accepted paid brand ambassador roles. If I’m working to market for a company I expect to get paid monthly for that. And my revenue shouldn’t be based on affiliate programs or otherwise tied to sales. It’s fine if there’s a bonus for sales I generate, but so much brand promotion now is on platforms like Instagram where I’m creating brand awareness without direct purchase links, or there’s a slower sales cycle where someone will see my post now but not make a purchase for months, without that revenue being tied to my promotion.

I’ve seen brand ambassador roles for travel influencers anywhere between $500 and $5,000/month depending on deliverables and the reach of the influencer/ambassador. Obviously celebrities can earn far more.

2. There are firm deliverables

A company should require set deliverables, including monthly social posts and periodic blog posts, either on my site, the brand’s site or both. Universal Orlando had us attend and promote attraction/park openings as well, and Travelocity flew us to Mexico several times to brainstorm the program and our roles and to promote resorts at the same time (with additional pay).

Brand ambassador: In Los Cabos, Mexico on an ambassador trip with Travelocity and the Roaming Gnome.

3. There are a limited number of brand ambassadors

I want a program to feel exclusive. If you make bracelets and you’re sending out thousands of DMs offering ambassador roles whereby you send the “ambassador” a free bracelet and they agree to do social posts, that’s not really an ambassadorship. There’s no long-term obligation, and the hundreds of people who accept your offer aren’t going to feel a particular bond to you. A good brand ambassador program should have 10-15 people max, all of whom love your brand and have different niches, so that the monthly promotion is as wide as possible. Give your group of ambassadors a name. Bring everyone together in person at least once a year. Make it fun.

Bowling at Universal Orlando with the Blog Squad - Universal's brand ambassador group.

4. It’s an exclusive relationship

If I’m getting paid monthly by a company to be a brand ambassador, they should expect me to be exclusive and not promote direct competitors. In the example I gave above about a bracelet company, there wouldn’t be any expectation of exclusivity – not for a free bracelet. But I want to be closely associated with any brand where I’m an ambassador and for that to come across in my social bios and in everything I do and post. If I’m an ambassador for T-Mobile, for example, I’d make sure that I’m only using T-Mobile, and T-Mobile would even be seen on unrelated screen shots on IG Stories. If I’m not passionate about T-Mobile, I shouldn’t be an ambassador for them.

In a case where absolute exclusivity doesn’t make sense, such as with a Middle Eastern airline that can’t transport you domestically, at the very least don’t do posts while flying other airlines and don’t agree to promotional agreements with other airlines. If you feel like it’s risky to accept exclusivity because you think a better/cooler partnership could come along, then price that exclusivity into your contract. I’ve had five different contracted campaigns with Capital One and, although never officially an ambassador, I was exclusive to them for over two years. I turned down several other credit card campaigns during that time, but I never regretted my exclusivity – after all, it kept leading to additional contracts.

Brand ambassador exclusivity: Photographing in New Orleans for Capital One

5. A brand ambassadorship is long-term

I usually contract for six-month ambassadorships, with terms for extending them six months at a time. I’ve also had one-year initial terms, which is even better. If I like a company and they like me, I want that relationship to last as long as possible, and a long-term mutually-beneficial partnership is always going to be better than a one-and-done partnership. Your followers will notice when you’re consistent long-term in who you recommend, and they’ll also notice when you’re inconsistent.

Advice to Companies

If you’re thinking of developing a brand ambassador program, I’d encourage you to:

  • Interview potential ambassadors and choose a group that will work well together. You want a cohesive group, and you want your ambassadors to mutually support each other even outside of your deliverables.
  • Have a one-year budget large enough for everything you want to do.
  • Expect to significantly increase brand awareness and be prepared to accept that as a primary program benefit. It could be hard to tie revenue gains directly to your ambassadors, but they can play a major role in long-term company growth as part of an integrated marketing program.
  • Send your ambassadors cool things. Everyone likes to get fun and/or practical swag. And when people get things in the mail, they’ll do additional posts for you and integrate those items into their lives and travels. My 18-inch Travelocity Roaming Gnome has been in the background of many Zoom calls this past year.
  • Have an out. Although I like six-month or one-year agreements, make sure that you can terminate an ambassador if you think someone will represent you negatively, or if one person doesn’t get along with the rest of your group.
  • And promote your ambassadors! The more attention you bring to them, the bigger they get, and the more it benefits you. It really is a two-way street.

“How Do I Become a Brand Ambassador?”

Most of my brand ambassadorships came about from in-person networking. Per my post on Advice for Travel Bloggers , networking is vital. I attended several AFAR events around the world before they asked me to be an ambassador. I met with Travelocity and Universal Orlando at multiple events. The Thomson Family Adventures ambassadorship came out of a hike during the ATWS conference in Alaska. And if a brand that I really like reaches out to me, I’m willing to be bold and propose an ambassadorship.

Feel free to send an outbound pitch to a company that you like, but a lot of things need to come together for your pitch to be successful: the company needs to have a budget; an ambassador program needs to be something that they’ve thought about or that they can integrate into their current marketing plan; and you need to be the perfect fit. In your pitch email make sure you emphasize your history with the brand and how they can benefit from partnering with you.

Brand Ambassador Best Practices

Have you been a brand ambassador, or have you managed ambassadors for your company? What am I leaving out above that could be considered a best practice?

Become a Follow Alice travel ambassador

Do you love to travel? And do you work social media like you were born with a phone in your hand? If so, you’ve probably wondered about ways to make your passions work for you. We might have just the right offering for you!

February 2024 update: Please note that at present we aren't recruiting any further ambassadors.

Those who become a Follow Alice travel ambassador earn travel credits by promoting their adventures online!!

You need more info than that, of course, so let's chat about ...

The mission

The benefits.

  • How to apply

Our mission as a company and team is to build a global community of friends based out of our clients, business partners and travel ambassadors.

We're passionate about beautiful places, but even more so about beautiful people. After all, a journey is best measured in the people we meet, not in the miles we travel. You think so too?? Then hey, you're just the person we're looking for! We invite you to become part of the  FOLLOW ALICE FAMILY .

We're passionate about special places, but even more passionate about special people.

Man sitting on beach and working on laptop

Digital nomads make for perfect Follow Alice travel ambassadors

Ambassadors are key players at Follow Alice. Our business is founded upon word-of-mouth marketing, and being a travel ambassador is really as simple as recommending a friend.

Over 80% of buyers, according to  Nielsen , say that they trust recommendations from people they know above all other forms of advertising. In other words, we could spend lots on telling everyone about how great we are at Follow Alice (because ya know, we're pretty amazing 😜), but that would never top word-of-mouth references.

So basically, we want to invest in you (rather than advertising tools such as Google or Facebook ) to spread the brand. In return, you receive travel credits from us which make it more affordable for you to continue to travel!

You help us by spreading the Follow Alice word to family, friends and your networks. In turn, we provide you with a credit (worth $100) for each referral that turns into a sale . We get clients, and you get money to spend on travelling. And it requires minimal effort on your part. Win win!

Promote Follow Alice whenever it suits you, and we reward you for it!

NOTE: you are not a salesperson !!

Apologies for the shouting. Just needed to get that out there. So, now we've got your attention, we would like to reiterate this point. The idea of this ambassador programme is not for you to be a salesperson. We don't want you to sell the trips. We simply want you to chat about us and send people our way. That's your job done. Leave the hard sales work to us and our local experts.

We don't want you to sell the trips. We want you to simply chat about us and send others our way.

Ambassador dashboard

Our ambassadors also don't need to scribble down names and figures in a notebook, either. We've created an ambassador dashboard so you can easily keep track of your referrals.

So, in summary, by becoming a Follow Alice ambassador you will:

  • Earn rewards by directing your friends and network to look at our trips.
  • Store all your efforts in your very own ambassador dashboard so you can see what's what at a glance.
  • Effectively have your own little side hustle (hosted on our website).
  • Put in exactly the amount of effort that suits you, and earn travel rewards accordingly.

Take a loot at the example ambassador dashboard below ...

Keep track of your referrals on the online ambassador dashboard

Just kidding! There’s no catch. 😄 Bet you were waiting for one, though?

  • We want you to be part of our community and refer potential clients to us.
  • You want to be part of our community and earn travel credits.

We’re basically a match made in heaven!

1. Spread the word

Speak about Follow Alice to your friends, family and online networks. Let them know who we are and why they should follow us on an adventure!

2. Share your ambassador links

Create unique ambassador links on your dashboard and share them anywhere and everywhere. Check out a couple of existing ambassadors' Insta accounts below as examples of how to use your links.

3. Refer them to us

Your sister wants to go gorilla trekking? Your friend keeps staring at pics of Sri Lanka? Send them to us! Your job isn't to sell the trip – you simply send them our way. You earn $100 for each referral that turns into a sale!

Let's help each other.

We simply provide you with the tools to do what you love, and earn some money and travel credits in the process. And because you're pretty much doing the work already, it won’t feel like you're doing much extra! Talk up, promote and refer to Follow Alice on your own schedule, and when you refer a potential client to us, we'll thank you in rewards.

Katrina Kaif is the new brand ambassador of Etihad Airways

Katrina Kaif, Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced its partnership with Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif as the new brand ambassador. This collaboration marks an important milestone as Etihad strengthens its presence in the Indian market and reunites with one of India’s most celebrated Bollywood stars.

Katrina Kaif, renowned for her global appeal and elegance, embodies the shared commitment to excellence as she reunites with Etihad. Her association with the airline will be unveiled through a captivating series of videos to be showcased across Etihad and Katrina’s social channels.

Katrina Kaif shares her excitement about the association, “I am thrilled to be back with Etihad Airways, a brand synonymous with world-class travel experiences. The airline’s commitment to excellence and its dedication to bringing people together resonate with my own values. I am excited to be part of a team that aims to create thoughtful connections and memorable experiences. I look forward to representing Etihad and being a part of their journey.”

Amina Taher, Vice President of Brand, Marketing and Sponsorship at Etihad Airways, explains the significance of this collaboration, “We are thrilled to welcome Katrina Kaif to the Etihad Airways family as our brand ambassador. Our partnership with Katrina is far from ordinary, it embodies the spirit of innovation and sophistication our airline represents while celebrating our commitment to uniting cultures and communities. With her remarkable journey and global recognition, we’re not only showcasing Etihad’s offerings but also fostering authentic connections that genuinely resonate with Indian travellers and celebrating our commitment to India.”

The new partnership builds on Katrina’s collaboration with Etihad in 2010 when she was featured as a discerning traveller showcasing Etihad’s travel experience. Her prior partnership showcased her appreciation for the airline’s commitment to comfort and top-notch service. Returning to partner again, Katrina and Etihad are showcasing Etihad’s strengthening relationship with Indian communities both domestically and in significant global markets such as the UAE, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

As the brand ambassador for Etihad, Katrina will be featured in a series of creative and engaging campaign videos that highlight the airline’s commitment to unparalleled comfort, flawless service, and seamless global connectivity. Her partnership with the airline bolsters its foothold in the Indian market, where it currently serves 8 Indian cities, further solidifying Etihad as the preferred choice for travellers and aligning seamlessly with the airline’s strategy for sustained growth in India.

The first video from the collaboration to be unveiled features Katrina Kaif on board Etihad’s newest A350 aircraft, offering a cinematic journey filled with emotions akin to a Bollywood film – featuring drama, love, and delightful surprises. The film also highlights the exclusive Armani-Casa dining wear, luxurious bedding, and complimentary in-flight Wi-Fly service, beautifully encapsulating the very essence of Etihad’s unwavering commitment to excellence. The captivating film can be seen on both Etihad and Katrina’s social media channels now.

Hilton Grand Vacations unveils 2024 Brand Ambassadors to headline exclusive member experiences

Hilton Grand Vacations

Annika Sörenstam, Joey Fatone, Katharine McPhee, Charles Woodson and others will support HGV in offering one-of-a-kind experiences for members

ORLANDO, FLA. – Hilton Grand Vacations Inc. , the premier vacation ownership and experiences company, announces its 2024 Hilton Grand Vacation Brand Ambassadors , including legendary golfer Annika Sörenstam , iconic musician Joey Fatone , singer and actress Katharine McPhee and others. “Creating unforgettable experiences for our members is a top priority at Hilton Grand Vacations, and we’re continuously building on our offerings to reach more members with new and exciting events,” said Gordon Gurnik , senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of Hilton Grand Vacations. “ Our partnerships with HGV Brand Ambassadors are an important aspect of creating these experiences, and I’m honored to work with such an amazing, talented group of people.”

In addition to engaging our members and guests worldwide, HGV Brand Ambassadors will participate in the company’s media campaigns and exclusive events throughout the year. Upcoming HGV Ultimate Access events include concerts in Las Vegas, Orlando, Honolulu and Myrtle Beach. Past events have included golf clinics with the legendary Annika Sörenstam, private concerts with “Joey Fatone and Friends,” meet and greets with professional LPGA golfer Nasa Hataoka and more.

The full list of the 2024 HGV Brand Ambassadors includes:

  • Annika Sörenstam , LPGA Hall of Famer and PGA of America Hall of Fame member
  • Joey Fatone , best-selling musician and television host
  • Katharine McPhee , singer-songwriter and award-winning actress

Among recent HGV Ultimate Access events is the annual HGV Tournament of Champions, which brings together entertainment, music and sports celebrities to compete alongside LPGA Tour winners from the previous two seasons in one of golf’s most unique events. Earlier this year, HGV and the LPGA announced that they have reached an agreement to extend their partnership for the next five years, growing the purse each year to reach $2.5 million by 2029. In 2023, HGV also partnered with the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix to offer members a front-row seat to the race from the HGV Clubhouse, a luxurious track-side hospitality suite. The company recently announced new world-class strategic partnerships with Great Wolf Lodge, Bass Pro Shops and NASCAR to further its position as a leader in vacation experiences.

Travel Guide Europe Russia Moscow

Introduction

Moscow's Belarus Station, Moscow

Moscow's Belarus Station, Moscow

© GregW

Moscow is the capital of Russia , and the country's primary political and economic centre. Formerly a communist strong-hold, this city is coming out of its repression and embracing capitalism to the fullest extent. The once empty shelves are now filled with expensive designer and luxury goods. Unlike many areas and cities in the country, Moscow has seen its population growing over the last decades, and is rivalling cities like Paris and London regarding the number of inhabitants, of which the total urban area now has well over 13 million. With the growing numbers of cars, this might give first time visitors a feel of one big polluted area with constant traffic jams and compared to its neighbour St. Petersburg it really needs to grow on you before you uncover its beauty.

Sights and Activities

  • Red Square and the Kremlin - The Red Square separates the Kremlin , the former royal citadel, from the merchant quarter. The square holds Lenin's Tomb, everyday except Monday's and Friday's from 10:00am until 1:00pm. St. Basil's Cathedral, the famous onion-domed church sits to the south end of the square. To the east is the GUM department store, previously known for its long lines, it now features a number of high end stores. The Kremlin has long been the one of the most important seats of political power in Russia, and current houses the Russian president. The Kremlin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Also there are place Historical museum, Alexander's Garden and many other famous building you can discover with a city guide.
  • Moscow Metro - The Metro in Moscow is not just for transportation. It’s a huge underground bomb shelter, that was build in Stalin time also as a beautiful museum where you can enjoy the best samples of Soviet art and architecture. The most remarkable stations built in Stalin Empire style: Mayakovskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya and Revolution Square, then go deeper into the history exploring vintage trains in Moscow Metro museum.
  • Novodevichiy Convent - Founded in 1524 by Vasiliy III (the father of Ivan the Terrible) in honor of the return of city Smolensk to Russia, the Novodevichiy Convent has become a shelter and sometimes a prison for many ladies of Russian royal and nobility ("boyar") families. It survived during the Napoleon army occupation in 1812 and was used as the Museum of Women’s Emancipation at Soviet times. Being one of the best preserved samples of medieval Russian architecture it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Also, close to the convent you can see the Novodevichye Cemetery, that is the most famous cemetery in Moscow.
  • Izmailovo Flea Market and Kremlin - Izmailivo Flea Market (often called Vernissage) is a famous one-stop souvenir venue in Moscow. If you want to take a piece of Russia to your country, this place is the best to visit. You can find everything there - from matrioshka dolls to Soviet life-style propaganda posters, from samovars to bear skin rugs, from oil paintings to school and military uniforms at best prices than elsewhere in Moscow. There are some Faberge eggs too! Even if you buy nothing it is a fun place to watch and take photos. Izmailivo Kremlin is located nearby. It was built in the 21st century as a replica of the traditional Russian architecture, but has become a popular entertainment place not just among tourists, but among the Muscovites as well. There is a typical Russian wooden church, a bunch of cafes and workshops on its territory. If you like to know the history of Russian vodka, welcome to the Vodka Museum.
  • ENEA (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy, formerly VDNH) - Built in 1939, ENEA (former VDNH) was the Soviet Union's largest exhibition to display the country’s economy achievements. It was planned as a temporary venue, but due to its enormous success, it became permanent. Now the ENEA is an open-air museum and is still a very popular exhibition center, where you can see not only some of the best samples of Soviet architecture and science, but also some contemporary, history or entertaiment art too. Watching the Fountain of People’s Friendship, the Worker and the Collective Farm Woman monument, the Gagarin’s Spaceship “Vostok”, you can still feel the spirit of the bygone Empire. Close to the ENEA, there is a Cosmonautics Museum and one of the largest parks in Moscow called the Botanical Garden, where you can go boating or have a bike trip. Inside this park, you can see and admire the Japanese Garden and the Greenhouse, which the Muscovites like visiting in spring.
  • The Cathedral of Christ the Savior - is a a memorial temple, that according to the Russian tradition, was build as a victory celebration in the Napoleonic war. During the revolution of 1917, the cathedral was at the very heart of Russia’s religious life, but finally it was demolished by the Bolsheviks in 1920. Some marble pieces were used then for metro design. Only in 1994, the government made a decision to rebuild this cathedral, and in 2000 the construction was finished.
  • Peter the Great statue - In the years since it was unveiled, the opinions about the Peter the Great statue have been very mixed. It was voted as the ugliest statue in 2010, and listed amongst the ten ugliest buildings. The people of Moscow can add to that, that they don't want to pay tribute to the man that moved the capital of Russia from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It is located on the western confluence of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal in downtown Moscow. It was designed by the Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate 300 years of the Russian Navy, which Peter the Great established. It is reported that the local government in Moscow, offered the statue to be relocated to St. Petersburg, but the offer was rejected, and for this moment this (in)famous statue is still on display.
  • Moscow State University’s main building - The complex consists of 30 major and 20 auxiliary buildings, an observatory, a botanical garden, a park, and a sports area. Its total surface area is about 167 hectares. The main building of Moscow State University, or ‘GZ’ (an abbreviation of glavnoye zdaniye,‘main building’, as it is called by students and teachers) facing the center of Moscow with its broad front. Its clear silhouette is visible from afar. The main building, topped by a spire with a star, reaches the height of 235.7 metres; the highest part of the building has 36 floors. So it is the greatest sister of seven indeed.
  • Poklonnaya Hill - was, at 171.5 metres, one of the highest spots in Moscow. Its two summits used to be separated by the Setun River, until one of the summits was razed in 1987. Since 1936, the area has been part of Moscow and now contains the Victory Park with many tanks and other vehicles used in the Second World War on display. Historically, the hill had great strategic importance, as it commanded the best view of the Russian capital. Its name is derived from the Russian for "to bow down", as everyone approaching the capital from the west was expected to do homage here. In 1812, it was the spot where Napoleon in vain expected the keys to the Kremlin to be brought to him by Russians. Since the 1980s the hill also includes the monumental museum to the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. The main building of the museum was constructed between 1983 and 1995. 'Hall of glory' holds reliefs of the 12 soviet Hero Cities, on its marmor walls are inscribed the names of several thousand Heroes of the Soviet Union, awarded during the war. 'Hall of remembrance' downstairs contains 'Books of remembrance' with the names of more than 26 million of the Soviet war dead.

For many Moscovites it is also a perfect opportunity to skating on the city biggest rink in ENEA and visit as many performances and cafes as they can.

The North Station, in Khimki neighborhood, provides berths for cruise ships to St Petersburg , as well as Astrakhan , Rostov-on-Don and other cities along the Volga. The South Station is not used commercially anymore.

Getting around

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the numerous 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre. With the Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in southwest central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in southeast central Moscow. The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and curently you will find no gardens there. The recently constructed Third Ring is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. Finally, the outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road, a motorway which is over 100 kilometres long and encircles the entire city. Finally, a Fourth Ring is due to be built between the Third Ring and the Moscow Ring Road in the next years, much needed to relief a bit of the growing pressure on Moscow's existing other (ring)roads.

Using a car in Moscow by the way can be very time consuming and stressful. The street system was never designed to accommodate even a fraction of the exploding population of vehicles and the traffic jams never seem to clear until the night. Most roadways are in a constant state of disastrous disrepair. You will have to compete for the right-of-way with seasoned drivers in dented "Ladas" who know the tangle of the streets inside out and will not think twice before cutting you off at the first opportunity.

Sometimes, all traffic on major thoroughfares may be blocked by police to allow government officials to blow through unimpeded, sirens blaring.

There is very little parking. Parking illegally can lead to a hefty fine of RUB2500 and your car being towed. If you are driving to Moscow, park as soon as you can at a safe place such as your hotel and use public transit.

By public transport

Check the All in one Moscow Search Engine for public transportation.

Moscow has an elaborate and wide spread subway system . There are 12 lines and 172 stations covering a total length of 278 kilometres. The Moscow Metro uses magnetic cards (contact cards) for tickets with a fixed number of journeys (up to 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 60 and 70 journeys for 30 days from the day of the first journey). 60 roubles (approximately US$2) will get you a ticket valid for 5 trips of any distance. The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30am until 1:00am. During peak hours, trains run roughly every 90 seconds on most lines. At other times during the day, they run about every two to three and a half minutes, and every six to ten minutes late at night. Most station names are only printed in Cyrillic, so travellers are recommended to learn how to pronounce the letters of the cyrillic alphabet to make travelling the metro easier.

Keep connected

Russia is a huge country, and excess to the internet varies a lot. The main cities and tourist places have (free) wifi excess at lots of places, like restaurants and cafes (McDonald's is always a safe bet). Internet cafes are present in larger places as well. Rural areas and especially if you venture into remote and/or mountainous areas have little excess at all. Most travellers will find connections though when using their phone or tablet.

See also: International Telephone Calls

The emergency number is 112. The country code for Russia is 7. Russian phone numbers have an area code with three, four or five digits (according to their province), followed by an individual number with, respectively, 7, 6 or 5 digits, always yielding 10 digits in total. The three digit code 800 is used for toll-free calls. Mobile phones always have three-digit "area" codes and seven-digit numbers. Calls within any one area code may omit the area code (except in Moscow). Inter-area code calls within Russia: 8 (wait for tone) full Russian number including area code. The international access code for dialling out from Russia is the sequence of 8 (wait for secondary tone and then) 10. International calls to Russia, as always, replace the plus sign (+) in the international phone format with the local international access code for the country you're calling from, followed by Russia's country code of 7 followed by the individual Russian phone number including area code.

You will require a SIM-unlocked GSM 900 / 1800 compatible international cell phone when buying a Russian SIM card. If you do not have your own international cell phone, it's best to buy a cheap cell phone with some value on the card. Foreigners can purchase a local SIM card by showing your passport. BeeLine is considered to be the best in terms of reliability and connections quality. However Megafon's services can be a bit cheaper.

Russian Post is the national postal service of Russia. It's English version is currently under construction, but mainly involves the track&trace system. The domestic post is reasonably reliable, and sending international mail is fairly reliable but slow, taking at least a few weeks to European countries, longer to the USA or Australia for example. The delivery of mail sent from abroad to Russia is highly unreliable, and people or companies tend to use foreign addresses, from where a private carrier sends it to Russia. Alternatives like poste restante are non-existent with Russian Post. Most cities and large towns in Russia have a Central Post Office (Glavpochtamt), which also sells stamps and envelopes, and usually has fax services and Internet availability, though the latter mostly not in smaller places. Also, many hotels have postal services, including mail boxes. Post offices tend to keep long hours, usually from 8:00am or 9:00am until 8:00pm or 9:00pm Monday to Friday, and closing earlier during weekends. The main central post offices in the biggest cities keep even longer hours. For sending parcels, you can also try services by DHL Russia and FedEx Russia . For all mail you can use the regular alphabet, though maybe include the country's name in Cyrillic. For sending post to Russia (or trying to receive it) note that addresses should be in reverse order: Russia, postal code, city, street address, name.

Carnival Cruise Line bans 1 onboard activity, but not another

C ruise ships have different rules than land-based hotels and entertainment venues. Some of those rules are practical. You can't, for example, light a candle in your cabin.

On land, a candle may help set a romantic mood with only a small chance of burning down your house, but on a cruise ship, the dangers are much more significant. A small fire can become a catastrophe so candles, power strips, curling irons, and clothes irons, among many other things are banned on cruise ships.

Related: MSC Cruises makes bold moves to take on Carnival, Royal Caribbean

Cruise ships also have very specific rules when it comes to smoking. You can never smoke in your cabin or on a cabin's balcony. That's partially due to the risk of a fire and partly due to how smoke travels.

Most regular cruisers have experienced someone breaking the smoking rules on their balcony, Smome travels up and smoking in places where it's not allowed generally leads to other passengers calling security and the penalty for being caught could be anything from a warning to being thrown off the ship.

Both Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) and Royal Caribbean allow smoking in parts of their casinos. Royal Caribbean does have small non-smoking casinos on its Oasis-class ships while its Celebrity Cruises line only allows smoking in a small section of its pool deck.

The two rival cruise lines, however, both have strict rules when it comes to gambling.

Carnival asked a key question on onboard rules

If you walk around a cruise ship, you will usually see people playing various games. Some play card games, while others have packed dominos, board games, and other types of games. Carnival and Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) encourage gameplay — they even hard card/game rooms on some ships — but there are certain rules.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald recently responded to an onboard controversy involving gameplay.

"Why has LRC been banned? Left Right Center is a game played by hundreds of Carnival cruisers every week on your ships. I ask because according to Cruise *** website, the game has been banned from the ships," wrote "V" on Heald's Facebook page. "We’ve played this game with my friends who cruise with us for years. Why this game and not others? Please explain."

The poster followed their question with threats and anger.

"This is the kind of rule that will turn Carnival cruisers away and to other cruise lines. This is being done to line the pockets of the casino. Just admit it and stop being a fool," they wrote.

Carnival makes its gambling policy clear

Heald has addressed this issue before, but he made it clear in his response that the game is not the issue.

"Thank you 'V' and the game itself has not been banned. Playing for money on any game outside of the casino is strictly not allowed. No exceptions, even for quarters as I may have misspoken about a few days ago," Heald wrote.

This post came after an incident where a number of passengers had been playing the dice game for money on one of Carnival's ships. Heald shared the rules again because he saw some media outlets getting the cruise line's policies wrong.

"I saw some of the cut-and-pasting news sites who report on my posts and repost them on their page had headlined we had banned the game. We have not. You can play any game you wish but not for money. And to suggest that this is so that money will be spent in our casinos is silly billy nonsense," he added.

The post was largely supported by Heald's Facebook followers.

"I love it when they say 'this will turn people away.' These are not real problems that are going to stop people from cruising. That statement should only be allowed if John stated that the entire ship was removing all food or they would no longer have stateroom doors," Stephen Phillip Hawker posted.

My Secret to Weeks of Free Lodging in Europe

I wanted to stay in apartments or houses—but i was a brand-new college grad on a budget.

This is One Thing , a column with tips on how to live.

After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely. I didn’t want to do my work shifts from a hostel bunk bed or random cafés that stayed open late. (I’d be in Europe, thanks to an EU passport, and my gig was based in the states.) Paying for Airbnbs the entire trip would eat up way too much of my paychecks. It was kismet that just as I was starting to plan my travels, my friend sent me a video about a couple traveling the world and dog-sitting along the way, using an app called Trusted Housesitters .

As an avid dog lover, I thought it was perfect. I paid a little over $100 to make an account, then started browsing housesits around the world. I adorned my profile with pictures of me and the various dogs in my life, and applied for opportunities across the ocean. Before I had even left the United States, I had three gigs set up: I’d spend about 10 days in Scotland and Wales, then three weeks in Amsterdam.

Just like when setting up drinks through a dating app, you do have to be vigilant and pay attention for red flags when talking to potential hosts. My stay in Scotland was less than ideal for many reasons—the situation could have been easily avoided if I had listened to my gut and declined that gig. (The app does do background checks, and there’s an opportunity for both sides to leave reviews, meaning you don’t go in completely unaware.) But the other dog-sits were fantastic. One experience went so well that last fall, I returned to Amsterdam to once again to dog-sit Pretzel, a lovely Maltipoo, while her parents got married and went on their honeymoon.

Although I opted for longer sits abroad, there is also the option to just watch a furry friend stateside for a weekend. (If you do go internationally, be mindful that you might potentially need a work or tourist visa.) I just checked the app, and as I’m writing this, there are opportunities available in cities that include Austin, Atlanta, and Boulder.

Of course, you have the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s dog—you need to do some planning and can’t just leave the pet alone all day, and the owners don’t pay you. But the free accommodations feel like a fair exchange to me. I also love that many of the dog-sit locations are in more residential areas, so you’re able to experience local life in whatever city you’re in. Plus, you get to hang with a cute dog. What could be better?

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

If your travel wardrobe is in need of a dire refresh, you’ve come to the right place. Amazon has discounted a plethora of stylish and sporty styles from Adidas just in time for warmer weather. Travel + Leisure writers and celebrities alike have praised the brand for its comfortable sneakers and apparel, and right now shoppers can snag deals up to 50 percent off this weekend.  During this under-the-radar sale, you can score some of the brand's most iconic staples, including the widely loved Stan Smith sneakers , track jackets , backpacks , and more for as little as $15. But here’s the catch: We don’t know how much longer these deals will last, so make sure to head to checkout ASAP to grab these discounts before they disappear.

Adidas Cloudfoam Pure 2.0 Running Shoes

Shoppers gush over the cushioning of these appropriately named running shoes, claiming that they feel like “walking on clouds.” That comfort comes from the brand’s signature cloudfoam padding that is designed to keep feet supported all day long. Beyond this shoe’s comfort, these running sneakers have a convenient slip-on tab and textured outsole, making them easy to pull on while offering excellent traction. Plus, the sneakers are available in sizes 5 to 11.

Adidas Women’s Stan Smith Sneakers

Ever since Adidas launched its iconic Stan Smith silhouette back in the 1960s, it has been loved among celebrities and travelers for its effortlessly stylish look and comfortable fit. In fact, my mom has been gushing over these sneakers for decades, wearing them as her go-to sneaker. The sneakers are equipped with next-level cushioning to support the arches, toes, and heels. Shoppers can pick up a handful of colors, including navy and gold .

Adidas Men’s Stan Smith Sneakers

These sneakers are also discounted by 20 percent in men’s sizing. Like the women’s version, they feature durable rubber outsoles for anti-slip traction, meaning you can run through TSA knowing your feet will stay firmly in place. The sneakers come in sizes 4 through 13 and a number of colors.

Adidas Daily 3.0 Sneaker

These Adidas sneakers have everything you’d want in a travel shoe: rubber outsoles for traction, an extra-cushioned footbed for comfort, and an easy-to style design that you can wear anywhere. On sale for $52 thanks to an on-site coupon, these travel-ready and best-selling sneakers may just be the only shoe you’d need to pack for your next adventure.

Adidas All Me Tote Bag

As far as travel essentials go, a reliable tote bag is a must. Tote this versatile travel staple around a new city, use it as a gym bag, or stow it underneath your airplane seat. It also has a genius two-strap construction that can be worn on your shoulder or as a crossbody bag. And it has a handful of spacious pockets large enough to fit clothes, shoes, toiletries, and more. Try it out for yourself while it's $42 today.

Adidas Grand Court 2.0 Tennis Shoes

These classic tennis sneakers have earned a spot on the Amazon best-sellers list. Shoppers note that they’re “comfortable to wear and boast the iconic aesthetic that [Adidas] is known for.” The sneakers are supportive, sturdy, and timeless, and you can wear them just about anywhere, whether you’re on the pickle ball courts or touching down in a new city. Pick up the discounted sneakers while they’re just $60 in select sizes and colors like black and white .

Adidas Essentials Warm-Up Track Jacket

When it’s cool in the morning yet warm in the afternoon, having a reliable jacket is a must. We like this best-selling track jacket that boasts a full-zip design so you can customize your warmth. This jacket is machine washable and made from a material that’ll keep you warm without overheating. It also features two front pockets and is lightweight enough to tuck easily into a suitcase.

Adidas Adilette Sandals

With an impressive collection of more than 8,000 five-star ratings, these slip-on sandals have proven to be the ultimate multitaskers by shoppers. These quick-drying sandals effortlessly transition between “perfect house slippers” to slides you can wear at the pool and beach. Other shoppers have even worn them as shower shoes. Beyond their utility, these sandals boast a cloudfoam bottom and cushioned feel. And thanks to an on-site coupon, these do-it-all sandals are 50 percent off this weekend.

Adidas Superlite Sport Performance Visor

My go-to choice for sun protection is usually a visor rather than a baseball cap or sun hat. The open-top style lets me keep my hair down or throw it up in a bun without sacrificing coverage from sun rays. Right now, I have my sights set on this lightweight, moisture-wicking visor, especially since it’s only $17 this weekend. Plus, it’s designed with a non-glare undervisor, meaning it won't block your vision during runs and workouts.

Adidas Creator 2 Backpack

If you’re in search of a backpack that’s designed to keep your belongings protected and organized, opt for this Adidas bag. This backpack’s spacious compartments are big enough to house a laptop and hiking shoes, whether you're flying across the country or going on a hiking trip. It also features adjustable and cushioned shoulder straps for an extra layer of comfort and two convenient mesh side pockets for a water bottle.
