Travelrite’s 2022 architecture tour of Japan

Travelrite’s architecture tour of Japan returns after eight years following the Japanese government’s recent move to permit specialized group tours to enter the country for the first time since the pandemic.

Marking Travelrite’s 20th architecture tour, the 2022 Japan tour will cover 17 nights from 22 October to 8 November and includes six Japanese destinations: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Mount Fuji and Hiroshima.

Led by recognized architect and former principal of Scott Carver Architects, Malcolm Carver, the tour will take place during autumn in Japan – a time of year Carver describes as one of the more spectacular to appreciate the country and its infrastructure.

Following the success of the 2014 Japan tour, this year’s program has considered guest feedback to compose an itinerary featuring Japan’s world-class architecture, memorable contemporary buildings and striking temples along with authentic Japanese food.

The Pritzker Prize for Architecture has been awarded seven times to Japanese architects since its inception in 1979, with four awarded the revered prize in the past decade. Carver will take the tour to see works of eminent Japanese architect Tadao Ando and of ten other significant and internationally acclaimed architects including Tange, Ito, Sanaa, Isozaki, Kuma, Kidosaki, Piano, Pei and Vinoly.

The rich itinerary will include a tour of Peace Memorial Park and Museum; a trip to Naoshima Island, known for its art museums and sculptures; and journey to a modern Buddhist water temple, among other activities.

The tour is limited to 32 participants and includes accommodation, guided sightseeing, entertainment and meals.

Architecture Tour of Japan

Our tour includes the top six destinations in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Mount Fuji and Hiroshima. Japan in autumn is more than just spectacular colour, it’s full of intrigue, with fascinating variety and a land of contrasts. We will visit not only significant modern and contemporary work in Japan but also traditional architecture, all with outstanding landscape design.

Timeless and traditional design has been the leading inspiration for the modernists worldwide through the influence of Japanese design principles. So following the success of several Travelrite tours of the USA we will visit a few of Frank Lloyd Wright’s projects outside of America. Japanese architects have now won the prestigious Pritzker Prize for Architecture seven times since 1979 with four being in this past decade. We will not only focus on eminent Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, but also view exciting projects of ten other significant, internationally acclaimed architects. The best, most popular sites from our guest feedback of our 2014 tour are included plus 25 more memorable contemporary buildings and priceless temples.

We are delighted that Yasuko, our wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide from 2014, who also arranged many memorable authentic Japanese lunches, will also be joining our team to make this the ‘tour of a lifetime’.

Our Health and Safety protocols on tour

The following information is here to assist and help you feel confident in travelling with Travelrite International Tours, post pandemic. On Tour Protocols

Travelrite International Vaccination Requirements:

All guests booked to travel with Travelrite International or Cruiseoffers Value Holidays are required to be fully vaccinated following local government and health advisories. Passengers must ensure they have the valid documentation for both domestic and international travel including your COVID-19 vaccination certificate and international COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

You also need to ensure you meet the current COVID-19 travel regulations and advisories for your departure point, destination, and any transit points prior to booking. This includes border declarations, testing and quarantine requirements.

Tretyakov Gallery: Masterpieces of Russian Art

The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is one of the largest museums in Russia with over 100 000 works of art - including icons, paintings, drawings and sculpture - spanning the entire history of Russian art. Its collection of Russian realist art from the second half of the 19th century is the best in the country.

Pavel Tretyakov, the owner of a successful textile firm, started collecting Russian art in 1856 and opened  his collection to the public in 1867. After Tretyakov's death the gallery's collection continued to grow rapidly, especially after the October Revolution when museum collections were privatized: art was bought, donated or "transferred" from other museums, private collections, cathedrals and monasteries. The most modern part of the collection, dating from 1950-1990, opened on 25th May 2000.

The gallery itself is a work of art - it was designed in an “old Russian” style by the painter Victor Vasnetsov, some of whose works can be seen in the gallery.

Our knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour of Russian art, and show you how the main movements in art reflect Russian history itself. You will see ancient icons including the “Trinity” by Andrey Rublev, and paintings from the 17 th and 18 th Centuries, a period when Russia started to adopt European fashions in art, as in many other areas. Many of the gallery’s most-loved paintings are from the 19 th Century: you will see Ivanov’s monumental “The Appearance of Christ Before the People”, Surikov’s epic history paintings and Shishkin’s views of Russian nature. You will learn about the various national schools of art that appeared in the 19 th Century, as Russia’s artists drew inspiration from everyday life and from their country’s landscapes, folklore, and history, and the striking avant-garde art of Russia’s Silver Age just before the First World War and the Revolution.

Visitors who are familiar with the history of Western art will find this unique collection, both deeply rooted in Russian culture and recognizably European, a real eye-opener. There is so much to see in this huge collection that we are sure you will want to return!
