The Trek Y22: What Full Suspension Looked Like in 1997

trek y frame mtb

Walking into a bike shop today, a row of different trail bikes may look somewhat homogeneous. If you were to travel back in time to the 1990s, that same row of bikes would look more like a hodgepodge of experiments, with radical frame designs and suspension platforms. Few mountain bikes serve as a better example of 90s experimentation than the Trek Y-Series.

This week, I had the pleasure of reviewing and testing a completely original (and very well-preserved) 1997 Trek Y22 owned by an individual here in Brevard, NC. This particular bicycle, I believe, was a size large, yet it appears smaller than every size-small bike I own. This was normal geometry for the 90s, as mountain bikes continued their gradual trajectory away from road bikes.

Upon its release, the Y-Series captured the attention of both mountain bikers and cycling journalists for obvious reasons. The Y-shaped carbon fiber frame was—distinctive, to say the least, and it garnered mixed reactions, much like a linkage fork or 36-inch-wheeled bike might today. Almost 30 years later, it still looks as strange as it did back then.

However, the Y-Series actually addressed several challenges with full suspension platforms at the time, including pedal bob, bearing fatigue, and weight. At 25 lbs (11.34 KG), you would be hard-pressed to find a lighter full suspension bike today under $8000. Back in 1997, the Y22 was $2200, which is about $4000 when you adjust for inflation.

It’s for all these reasons that I love testing older mountain bikes. An entry-level mountain bike today is vastly more capable than even the highest-end mountain bikes were in 1997. However, the experience of riding a vintage bike is never lacking in fun. The Y22 I tested was light, ‘darty’, surprisingly smooth, and shockingly capable when pointed uphill. Downhill, the ride was absolutely terrifying, thanks to 90s geometry. Thankfully, this beautiful Y22 is back with its owner now, safe from my shenanigans.

What Happened To Y Frames?

trek y frame mtb

  • Add to quote

I've wondered this. I remember when Y frames came out. They were... interesting looking, but nothing I'd personally have owned. Now they're gone. My son bought an old Mongoose Y bike to rebuild a while back, but that's the limit of my experience with them. I'm just wondering what happened to make them stop being manufactured. Was there a flaw with the design? Seems it would be weaker than a traditional enclosed frame, but they apparently worked for a while.

trek y frame mtb

You can't deny a yellow Trek Y-bike with matching yellow Judy SL looked tits back in the day.

trek y frame mtb

I liked the candy apple red version.

ever ride one? pieces of ****.

trek y frame mtb

It was a terrible design from start to finish. The only way the suspension worked was if you sat down. So all the pogo you could ever desire on the way up, then either stand up like an actual mountain biker for the descent and get no benefit from the suspension, or sit down like a Jerry and eventually get catapulted onto your face.

trek y frame mtb

I wish we could harvest that headshock design for fatbikes. Just give me 85mm of travel or whatever on the font end and only adding a pound or so, instead of the 3-5lbs that other fat-bike front forks add. Would be perfect for fatbike hardtails.

I have a carbon schwinn s20 in the garage. It's the sparkle gold color. Can confirm it rides like crap

Diamond tubed frame is a stronger and lighter structure. That is why.

trek y frame mtb

Honestly the slingshot was a better design than any of the Y bike designs.

trek y frame mtb

I can’t believe we used to ride pieces of crap like that…

trek y frame mtb

I think most of them were turned into guitars.

trek y frame mtb

Y-bikes included the URT , and mtn bikers eventually wanted more than the design could deliver. Clink the link for more details.

trek y frame mtb

Are you talking about interrupted seat tube (very common circa 2000) or URT bikes, or Trek Y-bikes, which were both?

trek y frame mtb

My buddy has a CF Trek Y22 hanging in his garage. He was an early adopter.

trek y frame mtb

What if the old Y bikes were fitted with modern day shocks? Would they not ride better? I've seen people outfit the old Cannondale Super V bikes with newer parts and they look badass and their owners claim they ride great. As for myself, I always wanted a '96 or '97 Trek Y-33 with the old school carbon frame.

Naw. Super V bikes were simply single pivots, using the pivot location and interrupted seat tube to get acceptable progression. URT Y-bikes were a completely different thing, mainly the URT part. Totally different characteristics there.

Well I still believe a Trek Y bike with a new Fox air shock would work wonders for the URT design.

Sure. And covid was fake. Also the moon landing.

I think they'd be cool for gravel bikes, but I don't like gravel bikes, so... That being said I've got a slightly more complicated version of the Y ish URT frame. The GT I drive. Bought it for the wheels a few weeks ago, rear shock needed service, happily tore it to pieces.. Just for a fun garage project, I might tear into the I drive system and clean and regrease. It's not terribly smooth at the moment, but the shock is rebuilt... Apparently the old rubber seals turned into hard plastic, they all shattered upon removal.

Yep, had the team issue back in the day. Broke em 2x's. Thought about making an acoustic guitar out of one. They sounded allot like the old ovation guitars when you thumped them.

There’s a good reason I steered clear of FS bikes back in the day.

Why, just why?

Walmart still sells some 26” wheel Y bikes.

Can’t we all just get along.

trek y frame mtb

How vanilla would that be.

He gots a merkin flag

Earlier this week I saw a guy with a Trek Y-bike at a local trail head. While he was kitting up, he asked his buddy: Think it’s time I should get a new bike? I didn’t catch the reply. They rode off before my brain re-engaged.

trek y frame mtb

Thanks, that was fun, really took me back! I remember at the time thinking the Y-frame was kinda gimmicky and I was far from trusting this new carbon fiber material. But, I sure remember changing my 1996 Proflex (aluminum frame and 26 pounds) from cantilever brakes to V-brakes, what an improvement! And when Fox introduced rear shocks with a "pedal platform," that was another big step forward, really helped tame that single pivot pedal bob. But yeah, elastomer shocks, short wheelbase, long stem, steep angles, high BB, small volume, high-pressure 26" tires; I rode several bikes featuring all that stuff, over some terrain I'd probablyb think twice about today. And survived.

  • USER REVIEWS

I bought a used one off Craigslist its incredible The pedals are metal, infact the metal all around feels so high quality its like super heavy duty. I like how its portable - i can stack it on its seat and back wheel in my apt extremely convenient. The suspension is so smooth for rough city streets and transferring to sidewalk is amazing. The shimano all metal breaks are incredible and the clicker shifters shift smooth. I also like how the frame is skinny looking down. No complaints at all.

If any weakness, the paint chips off, but the person i bought it from wrapped with blue electric tape so it actually looks cool (imgur picture of the bike i bought for 120 bucks): https://imgur.com/a/2hLWEHc

Had mine 20+ years. Built like a tank. Full suspension and very comfy, no mods or repairs at all except I fitted Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres to cut down on punctures and get a quieter road ride and fitted a slightly softer saddle and an extension stem to sit a bit more upright . This isn't the mud lovers Valhalla but if you want a sturdy reliable all rounder look no further.

A bit heavy by modern standards but then, so am I.

this bike has not let me down

i have changed the forks

i want rid of my trusty y3 but dont no were to sell it any one got any ideas

Frame strength and design. I have pounded the hell out of this thing and I couldn't break it.

Stock fork, shock, cassett, and brakes. It would be better to just buy the frame.

I got this bike because a friend of mine wanted one of my boards but he didn't have any cash so I took the Y3 in trade. When I first got it I hated the thing. I am 6'2" and weigh 210. The suspension couldn't handle it. I did everything I could to trash it but the FN thing wouldn't break. I took it to a skate park and rode it on the half-pipe (not recommended), I rode it (more like tumbled with it) down Diamond Head, and all that broke was my helmet (compliments of the half-pipe). After a few months I decided to put some money into it and see if it had any real potential. I reequipped it with Hayes disks, Fox rear shock, Manitou fork, Shimano XTR cassette, and a bunch of other goodies. I must say, you put about $4,000 into the Y3 and you will have a damn good MB/DHB.

good frame,

shock!!! pedals and bars were the only problem

This is agreat bike if you are willing to put money into improving some of the components. the only real problems i had were falty tubes and the pedals but they were replaced instantly the rock shox pyslo is Nuts i go of 5-8 footdrops and they just don't bottom out. The one time the did i nose dived of a ten foot gap i had built. Buy this bike if you don't care about wieght the xc people who had test this bike had to be nuts it is definentily not lite and the bobbing makes it very non xc able

The frame is the best strength of the bike

front and rear shock, all components

I had this bike for 9 years and changed everything on the bike. I have a new cannondale but I prefer to ride my y3. I get compliments all the time on this bike I guess becuase it looks like an Italian bike because the frame is red, tires are green, seat is white. This bike kicks ass

worst fork on the face of the earth....

For the price, it's an incredible bike except for the front fork. It is terrible. When you buy this bike, expect to add on $150-300 to the price for a decent front fork. Other than that, its good. The frame is wicked strong and can handle a lot. So it starts with 5 chilis but -1 for the fork.

Good price for an entry-level FS

stock components

Bought it used for a decent price last year, but cashed in on the upgrades. I ordered about another $400 in parts from a very popular mail order place (not to be named here). To make a long story short, they screwed up the order (like they so reliably do) but this time in my favor. I got the whole shipment/upgrade for free. I've been riding the bike for two seasons now and its been awesome. I tossed the stock parts immediately. With the changes, I've had no complaints yet except for the XT cassette that is as durable as a turd. Next year I want to upgrade the shocks... maybe I can cut another deal. :) I'm sure there are better, more energy efficient fs frames out there. But I find as long as I keep my butt on the seat, there really is no bobbing or energy loss. I recommend the bike to those who are looking to get into the fs scene. It's not worth the msrp, but used it can be a good deal.

I-drive tested

Weight strength and true Y frame ... not to mention price

Great bike... Got mine on closeout sale ... 725 with spins... so i can't complain ... I was disappoiunted in the parts ... Not that great... but for the money i paid... it was cheap ... I would recomend to anyone who wants a bike to upgrade that wants to look cool at the same time... and for all you posers who only ride on the road... get a freaking road bike ... you pretty little buggers ... and for those who want to look good and have a bike that can take a beating too ... get this one.but be prepared to upgrade front shock and drivetrain ... have fun... and for those looking for hardtails... i would reccomend a c'dale F400 ... best bet

Vrx200, C'dale super v

Trek Roscoe 24

Trek Roscoe 24

Roscoe 24 is a mid-fat kids' mountain bike designed to build confidence on the trail. It takes cues from the adult Roscoe, but this ride was built from the ground up for kids. 2.8" mid-fat tires, a 1x drivetrain, and a wide-range cassette make Roscoe the ideal bike for little rippers who want to build skills and have a ridiculous amount of fun keeping up with Mom, Dad, or an older sibling. Fit for riders 51-59" tall. It's right for you if... Your little shredder is ready to hop off the neighborhood streets and onto the trail, and you want to get them started the right way with a real-deal mountain bike that builds skills and confidence from the outset. If you're looking to teach your little one the wisdom of the trail, there's no better teaching tool than Roscoe. The tech you get A durable Alpha Gold Aluminum frame with a sloping top tube for added clearance, 24" wheels with mid-fat 2.8" tires for added traction and stability, a 1x8 Shimano drivetrain with a wide-range cassette for hills and technical sections, mechanical disc brakes, and loads of thoughtful details borrowed from adult MTB tech, like a closed front dropout and a tucked-in rear brake caliper so when kids drop their Roscoe it doesn't mean an automatic trip to the shop for a replacement part. The final word Give a kid a Roscoe and you'll make a mountain biker for life. Mid-fat tires and a wealth of kid-specific design details make this bike the perfect introduction to the trail. If your little one is ready to tag along when you hit the singletrack, this is the kid-friendly set-up that's made to build confidence, skills, and a healthy obsession with the world's greatest activity. Why you'll love it - There's no family outing as fun as a trail session, and Roscoe is the ideal kids' bike for building great memories - This isn't a small adult bike—it's built from the ground up for kids, by people who know exactly what works for them and what doesn't - When you're learning to ride, simplicity is best: a 1x8 drivetrain lets kids focus on keeping the rubber side down - The kid-specific frame geometry has a sloping top tube that makes it easier to hop on and off - The rear brake caliper is tucked into the frame to help prevent damage from laying the bike down
