Climb the historic tybee island light station..

Climb all 178 steps of the Tybee Island Light Station, and you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the island and coastline!

Once you reach the top, you can walk 360 degrees around the top of the lighthouse in order to enjoy the view from all angles.

At 145 feet tall and with a history going back more than 250 years (though it has been rebuilt several times), the Tybee Island Light Station is both the tallest and the oldest lighthouse in Georgia.

Without a doubt, climbing the lighthouse is one of the most iconic activities in Tybee, and should not be missed!

While visitors can easily rent a boat to experience this unique island, a more hands-on approach is simply to kayak from Back River over to Little Tybee Island.

No matter how you choose to get there, be sure to ask about the tides and keep an eye on the time: the tide dramatically changes Little Tybee Island as it moves in and out.

One of the most-visited places on Tybee Island, the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion has a long history in Georgia.

The original pier dates to 1891, though it burned down in the 1960s before being rebuilt into the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion we know and love today.

Located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski National Monument is a fantastic place to stop when driving between the two destinations.

Built in the mid-19th century and surrounded by an impressive moat, Fort Pulaski is an imposing structure that is packed with history.

Like so many forts along the Atlantic Coast, Fort Pulaski played a role in the Civil War.

The sole battle that took place at Fort Pulaski was between Union and Confederate troops, which ended in the Union taking control of the fort in 1862 and maintaining control of it from then on.

While you’re there, be sure to tour the fort and associated museum, as well as sample one of the beautiful nature trails that show off views of the Savannah River, the surrounding marsh, Tybee Island, and more.

The beaches here are wide, the water perfect for children and the atmosphere is vibrant. This is a place rich in culture, nature, and history.

Relax On One of the Beaches.

When you talk about the beach on this island most assume there is just one main beach but that isn’t the case. You actually have five main beaches and each of them has a different vibe so choose the one that best suits you. Going to one of the beaches is definitely one of the best things to do in Tybee Island GA.

North Beach tends to be the most popular and it is from here you can watch the cargo ships coming in and out of Savannah. You are also likely to see dolphins too.

South Beach is where you will find the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. You will find most of the island attractions here. This beach is also the one that gets the most crowded.

Savannah River Beach has gentle waves and is perfect for small children. It’s not that easy to get to but you can access it from North Beach.

Mid Beach is the beach where the locals tend to go. It is the beach running adjacent to 1st St and 14th St.

Back River Beach curves around the bottom tip of the island and is the best place on the island to watch the sunset. This beach tends to be much quieter than the others and is a very relaxing place to be. You can also see Little Tybee Island from this beach. This beach runs from 18th Street to the Back River Fishing Pier.

Tybee Island Pier

The pier was established in 1891 by the Central of Georgia Railroad and is a must-visit while on the island. It’s one of the free things to do in Tybee Island. While the breeze is a welcome relief during the day the best time to visit is in the evening.

In the evening the sunsets here are incredible and if you go early grab a picnic table and bring some food and drinks it will just be perfect.

This pier is an excellent spot for people watching and fishing. If you are looking for things to do in Tybee Island at night then this is it.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

Situated on the north end of the island next to the Savannah River entrance the lighthouse is a must-visit. It’s one of seven surviving colonial-era lighthouse towers. Visiting the lighthouse is one of the best activities in Tybee Island.

The lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in GA and is one of the most intact historical lighthouses in the whole of America. There has been a lighthouse on this spot since 1736 and the one you see today is the fourth dating from 1866.

The history of the lighthouse is long, varied, and really interesting. You can climb the 178 steps and the view from the top is amazing.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Between Tybee Island and Savanah, you will find Fort Pulaski. This 260-acre site is part of the National Park Service and is one of the best National Parks in Georgia .

If you love history it’s the place for you. The fort was constructed in 1874 to defend Savannah. Daily they offer guided tours, weapon demos, and fort orientations.

It’s also in a beautiful location among lots of nature, Here you will find trails, marshes, and small beaches to hike around.

The fort was declared a National Monument in 1924 and was ranked as the “most spectacular harbor defense structure” in the United States during the Civil War era. Rooms within the fort are preserved with period fittings so you really get a feeling of what this place was like.

Definitely one of the top things to do near Tybee Island. It can rival any of the State Parks in Georgia .

Tybee Island Marine Science Center

If the weather isn’t in your favor when you visit then a visit to the Marine Science Center is a great rainy day activity. It’s one of the best things to do in Tybee Island with kids

The Marine Science Center is a not-for-profit educational center situated on Meddin Drive. There aim to inspire with informative hands-on and interactive exhibits.

Cockspur Island Lighthouse

Cockspur Island is within the boundaries of the Fort Pulaski National Monument. It is in the south channel of the Savannah River near Lazaretto Creek.

It’s home to the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and while the island is closed for preservation efforts there is an overlook trail that offers visitors the best chance to get a closer look at the lighthouse today. The best viewpoint is on the Lighthouse Trail.

The lighthouse dates from 1854 and one of the most interesting facts are that it survived the bombardment of Fort Pulaski, despite being directly in the line of fire.

It is one of five surviving historic lighthouses in Georgia. You can also view the lighthouse from a boat on the water. This is one of the places to visit in Tybee Island

Battery Garland

Located in Fort Screven is the historical landmark Battery Garland. The old gun battery is now converted into a museum that features artifacts and exhibits related to the local history. It’s one of the best attractions in Tybee Island, Georgia.

Created in 1897 Fort Screven was an integral part of America’s Coastal Defense system. The museum charts the importance and this and other historical landmarks in the area.

Visit The End Of US Highway 80

US Highway 80 terminates in Tylee Island. The final stretch follows Butler Avenue across Tybee Island.

The highway’s end is marked by a small monument at the intersection of Butler and Tybrisa Street and the highway terminates at 19th Street, a few hundred feet from the Atlantic Ocean.

US 80 was among the original 1926 routes and was once part of the early auto trail known as the Dixie Overland Highway. it was originally a cross-country route, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, and went to San Diego. It now runs from Texas to Tybee Island.

The Sugar Shack seems to be the place that everyone flocks to. Its been here for 30 years and this family-run business serves incredible ice cream. Seaweeds are also another great ice cream shop with lots of choices. Jimmy’s Seaside Sweets also claims to have the best ice cream in the world.

Traveling east from Savannah and following the Savannah River’s South Channel toward the Atlantic Ocean, the right-angle curve tells me all I need to know. If I head straight, I’ll dive, head first, into the ocean. But if I turn right, I arrive in a world of bare feet, sandy beaches, and three-scoop ice cream cones. As a child who only knew the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia , I was overjoyed to know that a mere four hours in the car would bring me to the ocean’s edge. 

Decades later, the island mystique hasn’t changed much. As I drive past Fort Pulaski and the Cockspur Island Lighthouse, Tybee Island, known as “ Savannah’s Beach ” inches closer. Many times, I bypass historic Savannah, knowing a day trip is inevitable, and make a beeline to the island that tempts everyone with a day at the beach.

A barrier island along the Georgia coast , Tybee Island is small yet mighty with its beautiful beaches, deep-rooted history, and local shops. With three miles of beaches, the island offers a refreshing and unpretentious getaway.

What To Do On Tybee

Learn the history of cockspur island.

Between Savannah and Tybee, Cockspur Island is home to Fort Pulaski National Monument . The site of the first use of rifled artillery in military history, demonstrations of cannon firings take place throughout the year.

On the island’s southeastern tip sits its stately lighthouse. Only accessible during low tide, Cockspur Island Lighthouse is tiny compared to most lighthouses but decorates the channel with a dignified presence. Its service ended in 1909, and the lighthouse is now preserved by the National Park Service. Though you can't go inside, you can still observe its maritime beauty from afar.

Take The Family To North Beach

North Beach is family friendly with calmer waves yet plenty of shells and sand. Not as jam-packed as popular South Beach, North Beach is home to the Tybee Marine Science Center which educates visitors about marine life and protects the smallest of creatures, the nesting turtles.

Explore Fort Screven

Next door, ramble through Fort Screven, a coastal artillery fort that played an important role in America’s defense. The fort was built to defend the mouth of the Savannah River and was manned during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. The fort closed in 1947, and later one of the batteries was converted to the Tybee Island Museum and some of the fort's walls were converted to private residences.

Climb Tybee Island Light

Across the way from Fort Screven is the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum, an idyllic collection of cottages with a classic striped lighthouse at their center, all enveloped by a white picket fence. Built in 1736 and considered the state’s tallest, the lighthouse is a hefty climb at 178 steps. Catch your breath in the museum and gift shop.

Tybee is a popular destination for day trips from Savannah. It is about a 45-minute drive by car via Interstates 95 and 16.

The Best Time to Visits Tybee Island

When it comes to visiting Tybee Island, everyone can soak up the charm of sun-kissed beaches during the summer months from June to September. During this period, the island is brimming with excited vacationers seeking respite.

To beat the heat, the best time to visit for outdoor activities in from early April to late May.

Visiting during the Fall months, from September to November, are also great choices. As the school year welcomes students back, visitors can still enjoy pleasant weather and a more tranquil atmosphere.

Winter extends from December to February with much cooler temperatures. However, Tybee remains just as welcoming and quaint. Cozy up in a nice rental, go for cool morning walks and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in a laid-back atmosphere.

March and April are transitional months with high winds that become less mischievous as the spring season nears.

Best Things to Do on Tybee Island

Sail away in style.

Explore the ethereal natural beauty of Tybee’s back river and salt marshes on a boat. The Island attracts many visitors to island soothing saltwater that is also known for its healing qualities.

Crab Creek Charters has several options for exploring the area on water. Book a full day of sailing, go fishing, or take an eco-tour with a group of up to 6 people. There are a few other charter companies in the area, including Bull River Marina, Old Coast Adventure , and Anchors Away Sailing. However, I think they all share the reservation system when booked online.

Nevertheless, the Island’s tranquil coast is a therapy for the soul and mind.

Join the Farm-to-Fork Fete

It’s small. It’s quaint. But best of all, it is not overly crowded.

The Tybee Island Farmer’s Market is open on Mondays from 4 to 7pm and sources beautiful fruits, delicious vegetables, fresh eggs, artisan pastries, specialty products, and more from local producers. The reusable tote bag with loggerhead turtle bursting from its shell is too cute for words.

Stop each for local bits too! There is a great variety of baked goods, a lively atmosphere, friendly vendors, and a celebration of all things local.

Escape to Sun-kissed Shores

On my last trip to Tybee Island during the month of October, we spent the afternoon at the beach. It was a beautiful but cloudy day. The temperature was cool with slight breezes.

Before heading out, I made sure to pack all of the necessary beach essentials including sunscreen, towels, and water to stay hydrated. With the sun beating down, its important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

There was plenty to do from water activities, to building sandcastles, to simply relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. Overall, it was the perfect day full of fun and relaxation, but also an important reminder of the importance of being prepared and safe while enjoying the beach.

Enjoy a Seafood Extravaganza

Being a coastal town, expect a nice variety of delicious seafood options that are sourced from the Atlantic Ocean. Among the most popular foods found at local restaurants, visitors will find dishes like seafood boils, shrimp and grits, oysters that are prepared raw, steamed, or fried, and crab that is steamed, in a boil, or made into crab cakes.

Lobsters are not as plentiful, but you they are available at select restaurants. The clam chowder or seafood pastas will more than please your appetite. You’ll also enjoy a range of fish including flounder, grouper, snapper, and mahi-mahi. Grilled, blackened, or fried fish dishes are popular choices.

Witness Nature’s Masterpiece

Watching the sunset on Tybee Island is a blend of serenity and natural beauty that captivated us. We found some great spots to watch the sunset that gives a unique aspect of the island’s charm.

The Tybee Island Lighthouse provides an elevated vantage point that allows an unimpeded view of the sun as it descends into the horizon. The Back River Beach is another spot with tranquil shores that perfectly capturing the sun’s reflection on the waters.

For a quieter and more intimate scene, the North Beach has secluded spots to enjoy the sunset without disturbance. If you are planning a romanic scene, this would be an ideal place.

Or if you just want to make it memorable, you could plan a romantic sunset picnic. If you are with family, organize a photography excursion to capture images with nature as a beautiful backdrop.

Another way to see the sunset is on an afternoon boat tour, providing you not only with an unbeatable viewpoint but also the chance to witness local wildlife as they end their day.

Regardless of how you choose to watch it, the sunset at Tybee Island promises an unforgettable experience steeped in natural beauty and personal sentiment.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

At the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, meet wildlife by joining a trek in nature. Each walk has a different focus. The beach walk is a guided walk on Tybee’s South beach.

The Marsh Trek is a hands-on exploration where you will go to meet fiddler crabs, snails, turtles, birds and more. There is also a turtle talk, a sea turtle nest excavation, and a coastal experience where you catch and release crabs, silversides, sea jellies, and other marine life.

Make sure you are well dressed for the terrain. Don’t wear sandals, flip flops, or crocs. Some areas are muddy, especially in the marsh.

All of the walks are reasonably priced at $20 per adult. The center is located at 37 Meddin Dr Tybee Island, and it’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Experience the Eerie

On the southern part of the island, join the Tybee Ghost Tour ! You’ll meet your paranormal posse in the south beach neighborhood which bustles with restaurants, bars, and shops.

The tour makes eight stops thought the neighborhood. You’ll hear all about the history and hauntings in Tybee as you walk, then complete the tour at the beach while seeking apparitions. The tour lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours. The spookiness is light with a mix of entertainment.

Raise the Jolly Roger

Craving an extraordinary adventure? Ah, mate! Then you should include the Tybee Island Pirate Fest that is held in early October.

You’ll have a great time dressing up, being in character, and meeting fellow scallywags while enjoying food and drinks. Your vacation photos will be “booty-ful” evidence of all the escapades.

Take the Scenic Route

Imagine a cool breeze touching your face as you explore Tybee Island on your bike.

Yes, the Island features some fine trails and bike paths for a safe and easy way to get a better view of the charming little town. 

Best of all, rent a beach cruiser online at Tybee Island Bike Rentals. They have super comfortable 3G bikes with large seats so that that makes the outing enjoyable. The rental includes a basket, lock, cup holder and helmet. They can deliver the bikes to you at designated meeting points.

Or go to a local bike rental shop at Fat Tire Bikes at 1403 Butler Avenue. Their bikes have large tires, so which makes the ride easy on a beach while enjoying the beautiful seaside view. 

Dive into Local Delights

Wouldn’t you love to spend the afternoon spotting dolphins in the glossy water of the Island? Take a dolphin tour and get close with the most friendly and curious creatures out there in island water. 

If you are visiting a Savannah, there is a five-hour dolphin tour that picks you up at the Savannah Visitor Center. From there, you’ll be transported by bus to a local restaurant to dine on seafood for a great lunch at The Crab Shack.

Then you’ll spend about 90 minutes in the afternoon with fellow nature lovers as you search for dolphins. The tour ends with a stop at the Tybee Island Lighthouse for terrific photos.

Reach for the Sky

Visiting the Tybee Island Light Station & Museum is an amazing experience for history enthusiasts, lighthouse lovers, and those looking to learn more about the maritime heritage of the area. It is the tallest lighthouse in Georgia.

As you explore this historic site, expect a captivating combination of awe-inspiring views and fascinating exhibits showcasing the lighthouse’s storied past.

Begin your visit with a climb up the 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Tybee Island and the surrounding waterways.

Afterwards, take a stroll through the charming museum that houses artifacts and exhibits on the lighthouse’s construction, its various keepers, and interesting information about shipwrecks and pirates of olden days. Your ticket also allow access to the lighthouse, summer kitchen, and the assistant keepers cottage.

While the museum is open year-round, the cooler months of spring and autumn offer more moderate temperatures and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore at a leisurely pace. These seasons also bring an array of colorful flora that adds to the overall beauty of your visit.

Summertime offers a bustling atmosphere with numerous activities on Tybee Island itself but may also result in more crowded and warmer conditions at the museum and lighthouse. On the North and South Beaches, we visited a few quaint and colorful boutiques for fashionable beach wear. We also found whimsical and eclectic items for gifting, home decor, and hand-made crafts from local artisans who appreciated our support.

It was a great place to find all our needs from clothing, gifts, Jewelry, handbags, note cards, hand towels, wind chimes, art pieces, and so much more. The shops carry unique and unexpected gifts, and the adorable finds are well worth the time spent.

Journey Through Time

Are you a history buff? Come to Tybee Island to and spend a couple of hours learning about Fort Pulaski National Monument , located at 101 Fort Pulaski Rd. between Tybee Island and Savannah.

Fort Pulaski played a pivotal role during the American Civil War. It stands as a testament to the advancements in military architecture and warfare strategies of that era.

With military architecture, the fort preserves civil war history and presents cannon firing daily. It’s an excellent opportunity for history lovers to rejuvenate history.  

Children can participate in educational programs, junior ranger activities, and interactive exhibits designed to engage their minds. Moreover, simply explore barrier islands and nature trails, picnic areas, and enjoy birdwatching.

Tybee Island Georgia: 2024 First-Timer’s Guide

Tybee Island is one of 14 barrier islands along the beautiful Georgia Coast . Famed for its laid-back beaches, a picturesque back river area, and its somewhat turbulent history, there’s plenty to do on Tybee Island for beach goers, active travelers, and history buffs alike!

Tybee is also one of the closest beaches to Savannah , since it’s only a 25-minute drive from the city. In fact, because it’s so close, Tybee is nicknamed “Savannah’s Beach.”

The island is loaded with colorful cottages, seafood restaurants, bars, and kitschy souvenir shops. It’s not exactly what I’d call an upscale vacation destination (as evidenced by its second nickname, the “Redneck Riviera”).

Read on to discover everything you need to know if you’re planning to visit Tybee Island for the first time.

Visiting Tybee Island, Georgia

The two most popular seasons to visit Tybee Island are the spring and summer months. That’s when the weather is at its best and you can enjoy long days at the beach.

The water is warm enough for swimming from April through September, and those are also the months when lifeguards patrol the beach.

Once late August hits, peak Atlantic hurricane season begins and continues through early November.

During the winter months, Tybee turns into more of a ghost town. Although the locals stick around, it definitely lacks the vibrancy of tourism season.

Some of the businesses close down during the off season, as well.

If you’re curious, my favorite time to visit Tybee is early May.

Important Considerations

There are a few important considerations to factor in when you’re planning a trip to Tybee. Some of these might be “make or break” sticking points, so I want to make sure I mention them early on!

• Tybee Island’s beaches are NOT dog friendly. Fines are generous if you get caught with your dog on the beach, so avoid that at all costs.
• The hourly parking fees (and associated fines) are steep on Tybee, so it’s a perk when hotels or home rentals offer dedicated off-street parking.
• There’s only one way on or off the island by vehicle, so if anything blocks the road (floods or an accident, for example), you might get stuck for extended periods of time.
• “Orange Crush” is one of the biggest annual events that takes place on Tybee Island, and it isn’t exactly known for its family-friendly vibes. If you’re planning a family vacation, you’ll likely want to avoid that week. Orange Crush usually takes place towards late spring, so keep that in mind when making plans.

Savannah to Tybee Island

Tybee Island is only 18 miles from Savannah, so it’s an approximate 25-minute drive from the Historic District with no traffic. However, it’s worth noting that during high season it can take an hour or more to get there.

If you want to avoid the hassle of parking, the island is close enough that you can grab an Uber or Lyft for reasonable rates.

Those ride-share services typically charge around $30 each way, but you can check the fare estimators on each site to get a quote before committing to a ride.

Make note that it’s much easier to find a ride out to Tybee than it is to get a ride back to Savannah (since the drivers rarely hang out on the island), so it’s best to pre-schedule your ride home.

There are also a few companies that run shuttles between Savannah and Tybee Island.

If you want the whole experience planned for you, with round-trip transportation from your hotel, beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, and coolers, I suggest this Tybee day tripper experience .

Finally, you can also rent a car for the day through Turo or Discover Cars .

If you go that route, I suggest visiting a few of the other attractions on the outskirts of Savannah while you have the rental. Bonaventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Historic Site are a couple popular ones!

Tybee Island Parking

If you drive to Tybee, you’re going to have to pay for parking — there’s virtually no getting around it. Paid parking is in effect on the island from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 365 days a year.

That’s right, folks… you don’t even get a break for Christmas! (Maybe Scrooge lives on Tybee?)

As of March 1, 2023, parking rates on the island officially increased to $4/hour.

Download the Park TYB app so you’ll have it available on your phone, and then follow the instructions to load money onto it or connect it to your credit card.

If you pay at a kiosk and get a printed receipt, be sure to display the receipt on your dashboard. It’s called “Pay and Display,” and as long as that receipt is visible and you are within your time limit, you can park in any paid parking spot.

(Hopefully that makes sense? You can park, display your ticket, and then move to a better spot while still using the same ticket. That’s handy if you park in full sun and then a nice shady space opens up!)

Vacation rentals are plentiful on Tybee Island. So much so, in fact, that the city recently had to place a moratorium on allowing any new ones!

You’ll find adorable small cottages on the north end of the island, while the Back River Beach area offers the most exclusive (and priciest!) homes.

Things To Do on Tybee Island

There are a whole slew of fun things to do on Tybee for every type of traveler — whether you prefer to laze on the beach, spend the day on the water, or learn the history of the island.

Dolphin Tours

The waters surrounding Tybee are a popular playground for bottlenose dolphin, so it’s practically guaranteed you’ll spot some if you take a dolphin tour around the island.

Dolphin tours typically last an hour to an hour and a half. You can choose a daytime tour or a sunset dolphin tour if you want to make it a little more magical.

Tybee Beach Day-Tripper Experience

If you’re staying in Savannah, you can book a beach day experience that includes round-trip transportation to Tybee Island from your hotel or home rental in downtown Savannah.

This is a great way to have a stress-free day on Tybee without worrying about transportation, parking issues, extra fees, or accommodations.

The experience includes beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. On top of that, you’ll also get a cooler with ice to stash your drinks! That’s great whether you want cold beers on the beach with friends or prefer water and soft drinks for a family outing.

A stroll on the beach can be a relaxing activity, and Tybee has roughly three miles of ocean-facing walks, plus an another approximate two miles of river-facing views.

I prefer my beaches in more of a natural state, like Cumberland Island or Hunting Island State Park, but I can’t argue with all the people who love Tybee’s beaches! They’re great for people watching, and you can even watch cargo ships sail into port along the north end of the island.

Make note that there aren’t many shells on Tybee Island. That makes it comfortable to walk barefoot in the sand, but it’s not so great if you’re a shell seeker.

Visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum

Tybee Island is home to the tallest and oldest lighthouse in Georgia. The 145-foot-tall structure dates to 1736. Climbing the 178 steps to the top is a great way to see sweeping views of the island and beyond.

Next to the lighthouse, there are three Light Keeper’s Cottages, a small summer kitchen from 1812 that houses archeological finds from the island, and the Tybee Island Museum.

The museum is located inside an old military battery from 1899. It contains exhibits showcasing the island’s history ranging from its earliest-known inhabitants, the Native American Euchee tribe, to the mid-1900s Golden Era in U.S. history.

NOTE: The museum is closed on Tuesdays and some public holidays, and the lighthouse closes whenever there is bad weather in the vicinity. There is free parking on site (2 hour max limit) for visitors who purchase a museum ticket.

Fish from the Tybee Island Pier

If you want to try your luck at fishing, you can toss a line off the Tybee Island Pier. Just make sure you have a valid saltwater fishing license, which you can purchase from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) .

A few species you might reel in include drum, stingrays, flounder, and whiting. The best time of year for fishing falls between April and October.

If you don’t have your own fishing gear, you can rent for the day from a few different tackle shops on the island or stop by Walmart on your way to Tybee. (You’ll pass it on the drive in.)

Visit the Tybee Marine Science Center

The goal of the Marine Science Center is to create awareness about marine conservation and research through education.

As part of that education, the center offers activities such as beach walks and marsh treks, where you can learn more about the importance of Georgia’s barrier islands and salt marshes.

They also have exhibits with a wealth of information about the indigenous plants and wildlife found along the Georgia Coast — including everything from alligators to corn snakes to clownfish.

During sea turtle nesting season, which begins May 1st, volunteers from the Tybee Marine Science Center work to ensure a safe nesting season for the endangered species.

They help protect the nests, assist hatchlings as they make their way to the water, and they monitor nests after the babies have left so they can support any late hatchlings.

In 2020, they kept a late hatchling and named him Ike. You can visit him at the Marine Science Center!

Kayak along the Back River

If you’re looking for an active adventure, why not go kayaking to uncover the incredible wildlife and serene beauty of the back river area?

You might see osprey, turtles, or dolphin while kayaking in Tybee Creek, Oyster Creek, or the nearby Bull River.

There are multiple places in the area to rent kayaks, and each operation should provide safety instructions and life vests. You can choose to go on your own or join a group tour, but I recommend group tours for first-time visitors.

The advantage of a group tour is that the guides will provide information about the creeks and wildlife in the area, and you’ll have a helper who is certified in first aid within reach should anything happen.

Explore Fort Pulaski

Fort Pulaski National Monument sits on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island as a great reminder of the Civil War. It was the site of one of the major battles of the war and one of the first places major rifled artillery was used in battle.

Today, it’s one of the best-preserved masonry fortifications from the 19th century!

You can visit the fortress on a guided tour on weekdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday tours take places at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The tours last 45 minutes are are perfect for history buffs who want to learn more about the fortress.

Rent a Bike

Renting a bike is a nice way to explore the island while avoiding the hassle of driving around in search of parking. There are many bike rental shops on the island, and you can rent one for a few hours or a few days.

There are plenty of quiet roads on the island where you can take kids exploring without worrying about traffic, but do make note that many of the main roads get very busy over the holidays and during peak tourism season.

The island isn’t very big, so while it would take a long stretch of time to walk from one end to the other, taking a bike ride to see the cute cottages and catch a sunset along the river makes it much more comfortable.

Grab Ice Cream or Drinks by the Water

No trip to Tybee Island would be complete without grabbing ice cream or a cold drink near the waterfront. There are plenty of colorful bars and snack shops where you can do just that!

You’ll find the highest concentration along Tybrisa Street, including the adorable new Boardwalk Ice Cream Shop.

Restaurants on Tybee Island

Whenever you’re hungry, the worst thing that can happen is that you end up walking in circles trying to find a decent place to eat. It’s even worse if that place turns out to be subpar!

To help you find the best restaurants on Tybee Island, I’ve listed a few of my favorites for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Sunrise Cafe

This casual breakfast spot is a classic that has been serving Tybee Island for decades. Their breakfast menu offers a wide variety of sandwiches, omelets, made-from-scratch biscuits, waffles, and pancakes. Even if you have picky eaters in your group, you can find something for everyone at Sunrise Cafe!

Raw Ingredients

If you’re craving sushi, this is a great spot! They have a solid menu of nigiri, sashimi, classic rolls, specialty rolls, and create-your-own protein bowls.

Sundae Cafe

Not to be confused with Sun rise Cafe, Sun dae Cafe is a long-time favorite amongst locals. They serve a wide variety of lunch and dinner options that include meat, seafood, and burgers.

Bubba Gumbo’s

I have to thank Bonaventure Don for cluing me in to this spot! Bubba Gumbo’s is a laid-back, surf-style restaurant located alongside a working marina. It’s one of the only spots on Tybee where you can get fresh-caught Wild Georgia shrimp! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Sea Wolf Tybee

Now, if it’s dinner and drinks you’re after, you’ll find both on the menu at Sea Wolf. The restaurant serves up everything from gourmet hot dogs to oysters to vegan tacos (talk about an eclectic mix!), and they have a wide variety of cocktails, beer, and wine. This is another spot with a little something for everyone.

The Crab Shack

I guess I can’t mention restaurants on Tybee without bringing up The Crab Shack, but I’ll just say I don’t understand the appeal. The restaurant was featured on a short-lived TV series, and they have alligators on site that you can feed, so that’s a big draw for kids.

Best Beach on Tybee Island

It’s always difficult to choose a “best of” option, since my pick for the best type of beach probably differs wildly from someone who is 25 years younger (or older) than my current middle-of-the-road age of 50.

I’ll briefly summarize the options to help you select your favorite, then I’ll link to a different post I’ve written that goes very in-depth about each spot.

North Beach

North Beach is one of the first ocean-facing beaches you’ll reach when you drive onto the island. It’s where you’ll find the Tybee Island Lighthouse and can see cargo ships passing by as they make their way into the mouth of the Savannah River.

It’s one of the best beaches on Tybee Island if you’re into photography! You can get classic “Tybee” shots from the beach with the sunset and the lighthouse in the background.

North Beach has lifeguard stands, public restrooms, changing stations, and a decent number of restaurants and snack stands. Parking is plentiful, and the beach typically isn’t overly crowded.

Mid Beach is aptly named, since it’s a middle-of-the-road type of beach. It doesn’t really stand out in my mind for any particular reason.

The Mid Beach area has lifeguard stands and a decent number of restaurants within easy walking distance. It’s a busy spot, but not overly so.

There are plenty of hotels and home rentals in this area. The parking is primarily street parking, but it’s plentiful.

South Beach

Pardon the improper grammar, but South Beach is where the party’s at .

If you’re looking for crowds, you’ll find them in the South Beach area. The popular pier and pavilion is located in South Beach, too.

The South Beach zone has lifeguard stands, plenty of parking, restrooms, and changing stations. You’ll also find a wide variety of bars, restaurants, and short-term rentals in this area.

Back River Beach

My personal favorite beach on Tybee Island is the Back River Beach area. (Remember, though…I prefer quieter, more natural beach areas.)

This is a peaceful beach, and it’s the perfect spot to escape the crowds. It’s a great place for romantic strolls or relaxing on a beach swing while catching a beautiful sunset over Little Tybee Island.

The Back River Beach is river facing, so the waves are small and look more like something you’d see in a lake. The area does not have lifeguard stands, and you’ll have to walk a bit to find a public restroom.

This section of the beach is lined with high-end homes that act as short-term rentals or second homes for some of Savannah’s wealthier residents.

Either you’re getting paid to tout the restaurants you mention or you just don’t really know Tybee. I agree that The Crab Shack’s food is overrated, but the atmosphere is good, especially for children. But Sundae Cafe for lunch instead of dinner? How about great food and margaritas at casual Sting Ray’s, gorgeous sunset dinners at AJ’s, fine food at Pier 16, or fun with the locals at Huckapoo’s. We love Sunrise Cafe, but don’t you think first-timers might want to try the famous Breakfast Club? Eat upstairs at Fannie’s and watch the waves roll in. And don’t forget to have ice cream for desert at The Sugar Shack.

I can assure you I don’t get paid to mention restaurants on this guide. In fact, I have a policy not to accept sponsored meals. I also never ask for any special favors when I visit a restaurant. I pay out of pocket for every meal and usually tip at least 25%. (I have the receipts, since I save them all for tax purposes!)

I mentioned that The Crab Shack is fun for kids, I simply said I don’t personally understand the appeal since I think the food is better at other spots. You’re entitled to your opinion, just as the restaurants I listed are my opinions. I haven’t tried Pier 16 yet, but am really looking forward to doing so soon! Sundae Cafe is great for lunch or dinner, and I mentioned that in the writeup. AJ’s has nice sunsets, but I had already listed Bubba Gumbos — which also has really pretty sunsets. I didn’t want the list to get too long, so I simply listed a handful of worthy spots on the island to try.

Since this website is based on Savannah, I don’t go very in-depth on Tybee topics. Most readers simply go there for a quick day trip, so I wrote the post to provide a quick overview. If I ever write a detailed post about Tybee restaurants, it’ll include more restaurants!

5 Things to do in Tybee Island If You Only Have One Day

If you are planning a trip to Savannah, Georgia, be sure to make time for a day trip to Tybee Island. It is only about a 25-minute drive from the heart of Savannah, but feels a world away! Keep reading to discover the best things to do in Tybee Island on a day trip.

1. Buy fresh peaches at the Davis Produce Stand

As you drive over the bridge from Savannah, the stately homes and cobblestone streets are soon replaced with windswept grasslands, sunny stretches of sand, and the heady fragrance of the salty sea air. Welcome to Tybee Island!

Shortly after crossing the bridge, you’ll see the Davis Produce Stand on your right next to the Shell gas station. The address is 7755 US-80 E, Savannah.

This is the best place around Savannah to buy fresh Georgia peaches, because you can’t come to Georgia and NOT try a fresh Georgia peach!

If you are visiting between May through August, you will find bushels of juicy ripe peaches at this produce stand.

However, even if you are visiting in the off-season, you will still find a variety of other seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Along with fresh produce, you can also sample southern boiled peanuts, or pick up some preserved fruit, homemade desserts, and gourmet dressings and sauces. The bottled peaches with a hint of vanilla were our favorite!

You can even find novelty gifts like “Gator Jam”(Ginger Apple, Tangerine, Orange, and Raspberry)

Be sure to sample some of their homemade desserts, the banana cream pudding, tiramisu, and maple bread pudding are divine!

We also love visiting this stand because the owners are so friendly. There really is something to be said about southern hospitality!

We had a laugh as one of the owners taught us how to eat a scuppernong and we bonded over our mutual love of the Osmonds.

Scuppernongs are oversized seeded grapes with thick skin that can only be found in the South.

The Davis Produce Stand is also a favorite stop for Paula Deen. The fresh ingredients from her “Quarantine Cooking” show came exclusively from the Davis Produce Stand.

She lives only a few miles away on Tybee Island. She recently sold her French Caribbean resort-style home on the banks of Wilmington River for a cool $7.25 million.

If you want to drive by and sneak a peak, it is located at 818 Wilmington Island Road.

Her new home is at an undisclosed location about a mile from her former home, if you ask the locals they may just give you directions. We drove by her new home and actually saw the queen of southern cooking herself as she pulled up in her black SUV!

2. Eat at The Original Crab Shack

Our favorite place to eat on Tybee island is The Original Crab Shack . This place is more than just a restaurant, it is an experience!

Choose a table outdoors and you’ll feel like you’re eating in a treehouse. The slatted wood deck is built around clusters of trees with lights and lanterns hanging from the branches.

The tables overlook Chimney Creek where you can watch the tide receding and spot the occasional dolphin popping out of the water.

Resident cats roam around the deck, rubbing up against the legs of patrons and hoping to get a bite of food that has fallen on the floor.

The Crab Shack serves up some of the freshest seafood and low country boil on the island. You are in for a treat if you order the Seafood Sampler Platter!

If you prefer turf instead of surf, they do have BBQ Chicken, Slow-cooked Ribs, and Pulled Pork Sandwiches, along with the traditional southern side dishes.

After you eat, head to the gift shop where you can buy gator bait to feed the alligators in the gator pond.

For $3, you can buy 4 pellets then use the provided fishing poles to clip on a pellet and lower it into the gator pond.

They’ll quickly gather below you and wrestle for a bite, it is definitely a unique and thrilling experience!

The Crab Shack also has an arcade and a bird rescue room where you can meet the mouthy feathered residents with the funniest attitudes.

You’ll also find a gift shop, a replica of the largest crocodile found, a few photo-ops, and some interesting gator facts posted around the property.

Dining at The Crab Shack is definitely a memorable experience and one of the best things to do in Tybee Island!

3. Visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse

If Tybee Island seems like something out of a dreamy movie, that’s because it is!

This cheerful beach town is where Nicholas Sparks’  The Last Song  was filmed, starring Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth.

And one of the most dreamy spots on the island is the Tybee Island Lighthouse that crowns the windswept coast.

The lighthouse is the tallest and oldest lighthouse in Georgia, with a history dating back to 1736. It is a must-see when visiting the island.

In addition to the lighthouse, you will also find three charming Light Keeper Cottages on the grounds. They serve as museums with a small summer kitchen showcasing archaeological finds.

The Tybee Island Museum can also be found in the Military Battery across the street.

For $10 you can tour the museums and climb to the top of the lighthouse to drink in the panoramic views over the island and surrounding ocean.

4. Relax on the beach

If you are visiting during the heat of a dragon breath summer, be sure to escape the humidity on the shores of one of Tybee Island’s beautiful beaches.

Tybee is a barrier island that is home to over three miles of pristine beaches. 

North Beach

The long stretch of land on the north end of Tybee Island is considered North Beach. This is where the Tybee Lighthouse is located, along with other historic landmarks, such as the Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Along with a sugary white sand beach, you’ll also find plenty of cafes and shops in North Beach. The Shoppes at 1207 and Tybee Oaks are considered the premier shopping destinations in Tybee Island.

For a fun afternoon, rent a beach cruiser from Tybee Island Bike Rentals and explore around North Beach, or take a guided segway tour !

South Beach

South Beach, appropriately located on the southern tip of Tybee Island, is where the locals hang out. This encompasses the downtown district where you can find a vibrant nightlife.

Head down to the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion and grab an ice cream at the Sweet Dreams Bar & Grill to eat while you walk along the beach.

Mid Beach is centrally located to many attractions and offers some of the best beachfront accommodations on the island.

The DeSoto Beach Hotel is the only true beachfront hotel on Tybee Island. It features a swimming pool with ocean views, and a private sun deck with beach access.

This is one of the more popular hotels, but if you’re looking for something a little more private, try the DeSoto Beach Bed & Breakfast . This exclusive bed & breakfast has three cozy rooms with private balconies overlooking the ocean.

The Beachside Colony Resort is also a great option for families. The condos have fully equipped kitchens and there are several heated pools, tennis and volleyball courts, and an oceanside restaurant on the property.

There are also several great dining options at Mid Beach, including The Deck Beach Bar & Kitchen, Tybee Island’s only beachfront restaurant.

Back River Beach

Back River Beach is considered a hidden gem where you’ll find an empty stretch of sand along Tybee Creek that is void of the usual tourists.

If you are there at dinnertime, be sure to catch a sunset on the outdoor deck of A-J’s Dockside Restaurant while indulging in fresh seafood.

Tybee’s Back River also encompasses the winding river marshlands. Head over to Lazaretto Creek Marina where you can embark on a dolphin tour , or rent kayaks and jet skis to explore the river.

5. Visit Little Tybee Island

Little Tybee Island is an uninhabited nature preserve just south of Tybee Island.

Although this island is called ‘Little Tybee’, it is actually twice the size of Tybee Island.

The remote island can only be accessed by boat or watercraft. Boat, kayak, and jet ski rentals are available at Bull River Marina.

Just keep in mind that the tide changes every 6 hours. Be cautious so that your watercraft doesn’t get stranded as the tide goes out.

Little Tybee is a popular spot to find shark teeth and fossils. Consider taking a backcountry wilderness estuary tour with Sundial Charters to explore the nature preserve and hunt for fossils. They also offer crabbing, fishing, hiking, dolphin watching, and birding tours.

For a memorable experience, try camping under the stars on Little Tybee. You can also splurge on a Sunset Dinner Cruise or Sunset Picnic Dinner on your own private island.

The  Tybee Lighthouse & Museum is a must-see for every Tybee visitor.   The stunning silhouette will impress even the most experienced travelers with its 154′ height and all of the original outbuildings.  Climb to the top for a panoramic view of Tybee Island!  The Lighthouse may be the most photographed landmark on the entire island.

2.  Ft Pulaski

Orange Crush set to return to Tybee Island this weekend

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The large unpermitted event, Orange Crush, is set to take place on Tybee Island this weekend, and the city is already preparing for visitors.

Last year, there were between 40-50 thousand people that came to the island for the event gridlocking traffic and essentially shutting down both Tybee and even Wilmington Island.

Tybee Island has been prepping for the extra traffic since Tuesday of this week, shutting down essentially all parking on the South end of the island and putting in traffic control measures.

Several streets off of Butler Avenue will be blocked off this weekend to non-residents, in hopes of making sure people’s yards don’t become parking lots like they did last year.

Interim City Manager Michelle Owens says that they’ll be monitoring the traffic situation all weekend, and they’ll make adjustments if needed.

However, other folks on the island say that Orange Crush should be treated like any other event.

”If we see that the crowds in those areas are unmanageable, we will begin to consider what we need to do. We will have barricades staged in those areas just in case we need to deploy them,” said Owens.

“We wish for it to be treated like any other event. We understand that it’s a lot of people that come and it’s hard to handle that many people, we do get that. And so, we’re asking people to remember themselves and we’re asking that both the city and the people who come remember themselves and treat everyone the same. Treat everyone with respect and dignity and we can get through this day,” said Julia Pearce with Tybee MLK.

In addition to parking measures, the police department is going to have extra patrols on duty and the Chatham County Police Department will be monitoring Highway 80 onto the island.

Ahead of this year’s event, several Tybee restaurants have announced closings for this weekend.

As Orange Crush visitors arrive on Tybee, strict parking restrictions are also in place.

“What we’ve tried to do this year is create a circle so that the traffic can keep moving and if it can’t find a place to stay here, it can keep moving back off the island,” said Tybee Island Mayor Brian West.

Some Orange Crush attendees we talked to, many of whom attend historically Black colleges and universities, call the measures over the top for the group they say is just looking to have a good time.

“If you want to keep traffic flowing, the island’s only so big, why block off all the parking spots,” asked Coolie Myrick from Augusta. “They’re sending an indirect message that they don’t want it to happen.”

“I know it’s going to be heavy traffic and stuff, but people are still going to pop out. If they want to make it out here, they’re going to make it out here,” said Devyn Simplis.

Leaders say last year’s unpermitted beach bash sent the small island into chaos with hour’s long traffic jams, drug overdoses and assaults putting a strain on emergency services.

“These activities that we’re seeing aren’t a race or color or even a nationality. They’re things that are happening to anybody. They are things that we would stop no matter who’s doing them,” said Mayor West.

This will be the first Orange Crush event following the passage of a Georgia law allowing cities to put unpermitted event promoters on the hook for public service costs or damages.

As both officials and attendees gear up for the weekend-long beach party, many hoping the headaches stay to a minimum.

Last month, Tybee’s city council approved $250,000 in funding to prepare for this weekend.

Area law enforcement is warning of extensive delays and enhanced patrols along Highway 80 through Sunday.

How the unpermitted events law allows city leaders to hold promoters accountable

The law allows municipalities to sue promoters of unpermitted events like Orange Crush.

The Tybee City Council specifically advocated for the law after they incurred almost $200,000 worth of expenses during last year’s Orange Crush. The bill was just signed into law weeks ago, after being introduced this legislative session.

It was written so it went into effect the second it got Governor Kemp’s signature.

Though the bill doesn’t give Tybee power to do things like close down Highway 80, liked they’ve asked for, it does give them an avenue to deal with any issues from an overcrowded island.

“It covers any costs that we have to clean up the beach as well as the city streets. It helps us to accommodate any extra law enforcement that we may need in order to help us deal with the event,” said Owens.

This year’s Orange Crush is being advertised as starting today and going through Sunday.

Orange Crush: ‘Orderly’ HBCU beach party comes to Georgia coast

TYBEE ISLAND ― As the sun set on Georgia’s most popular beach Saturday, the Orange Crush beach party was a celebration without the chaos.

Thousands of students and alumni of historically Black colleges and universities converged on Tybee Island Saturday for the unsanctioned bash that one attendee called the “new Freaknik.” But instead of the clogged streets, fights on the beach and property damage that marked last year’s Orange Crush, the first 24 hours of the 2024 version had more of a college spring break vibe, with a steady traffic flow – albeit slow moving – scantily-clad young people, loud music and energetic dancing.

Tybee officials employed unprecedented traffic and public safety measures for beach bash, with more than 100 off-island law enforcement officers on hand to supplement the Tybee Police force. The increased policing included a Georgia State Patrol helicopter and several all-terrain vehicles from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Law enforcement had made 12 arrests, including nine for felonies, as of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Tybee Interim City Manager Michelle Owens.

She called called attendees “orderly” and said safety measures put in place for the event accomplished their intended purpose. Officials closed three parking lots near the island’s most popular beach, prohibited parking along a part of U.S. 80 and blocked access to residential neighborhoods with barricades.

“Some people might perceive it as unwelcoming,” said Owens, herself a graduate of the local HBCU, Savannah State University. “I wish they would see it more as in order to be safe, you have to put these measures in place.”

The day was not without incidents, particularly once afternoon turned to evening. A motorist fleeing from the police along U.S. 80 collided with another vehicle, drove up on the sidewalk and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase before being apprehended. Another Orange Crush attendee was involved in an altercation in Tybee’s central business district and was being treated by emergency medical personnel. Details of the assault were not immediately available.

Last year, more than 100,000 partiers converged on the beach town over an April weekend, overwhelming the 3-square-mile island with traffic, parking and property damage issues.

A steady stream of Orange Crush attendees flowed onto the island throughout the day, including some early risers who said they’d gotten on the road as early as 6 a.m. to make the drive to the shore. Those partiers joined hundreds of others who arrive Friday for the weekend-long bash. Several attendees said they’d gotten on the road as early as 6 a.m. to make the drive to the shore.

Tybee business owners expressed mixed feelings about the onslaught of Orange Crush attendees. Most restaurants, bars and beachwear retailers were open throughout the morning and afternoon but many closed around 6 p.m.

Others didn’t open at all. Ricardo Ochoa, the owner of three Tybee businesses, opened only his bike rental shop on Saturday — and closed after lunch. He said Orange Crush’s reputation, the local government’s preparations for the event and the media coverage hurt business. He said he’s also experienced staffing shortages, with employees who live off-island hesitant to come to work because of the traffic.

“Our businesses are already lower than the same week last year,” said Ochoa, who operates a restaurant, Sea Wolf and the clothing retail store Wild Zinnia Beach Boutique in addition to the bike rental shop. “It has cost us several thousand dollars.”

Orange Crush began Friday afternoon, when hundreds of 20-somethings met at Tybee’s south beach by the pier wearing swimsuits, flip flops and Crocs. Several young men walked around holding large Bluetooth speakers blaring syncopated rap music.

Many of the women danced, gyrating and yelling out the song lyrics. Echoes of chants and cheers roared from all of the individual groups.

Others in town for Orange Crush played games like spades and Twister. Vendors pulling large coolers full of pouches of frozen cocktails for sale worked the sands.

For Precious Kaio, a junior from Atlanta who attends Georgia Southern University, coming to Orange Crush is a chance for college students to unwind from the stress of campus life and coursework.

“I’m just out here trying to have a good time before finals,” she said.

Faith Dixon, Kaio’s college classmate who’s also from Atlanta, stood nearby taking selfies. Dixon said Orange Crush gives them a chance to interact with their friends away from the confines of campus.

“Me and my friends are here just to have fun with our peers and to make some new connections,” Dixon said.

Reese Harvey, of Decatur, is at Orange Crush for the first time. He calls his time at Tybee Island “a getaway.”

“It gives me a chance to put my feet in the sand and have a little vacation,” Harvey, 23, said.

Orange Crush attendees weren’t the only beachgoers. A crowd of locals and visitors, most of them white and carrying surfboards and towels, congregated near the pier. Empty liquor bottles, beer cans, red Solo cups and Styrofoam boxes were scattered across the white sands.

Game wardens from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources worked the beach on all-terrain vehicles and under the pier on side-by-side vehicles. The game wardens were there to assist the Tybee police and ensure there was no fighting or disorderly conduct.

In Tybee’s business district, adjacent to the pier and beach, Orange Crush attendees walked from block to block sipping alcohol from open containers, which is legal in the beachside town.

Barricades and traffic cones lined Butler Avenue, Tybee Island’s main street and part of U.S. 80. Pairs of police officers, sheriffs and state troopers parked their cruisers facing opposite directions in the center of the street.

“It seems like the police are more prepared than last year because it was chaotic,” said Jamary Gresham, a 25-year-old Decatur native who’s attended Orange Crush two consecutive years. “Some people in the street were just doing anything they wanted like donuts in their cars. The beach was full, and it was crazy.”

Checkpoints and police traffic control vehicles marked the roads leading to Tybee Island, including on I-16, the highway that connects Savannah to Macon and most of the rest of Georgia. The increase in police presence has raised some concerns from attendees.

Harvey, the Decatur resident and first-time Orange Crush attendee, said the event is a great platform that promotes fun and Black joy.

“This brings Black youth as a community together,” Harvey said. “We can celebrate because it’s a part of the culture.

As Tybee Island implements control measures for weekend, Orange Crush founder recounts challenges

As a 19-year-old Savannah State University student in 1988, Kenneth Flowe knew he had to be strategic when getting a permit to host the first iteration of Orange Crush. However, he pulled the permit for the pavilion in November ― five months before the April beach bash he planned for Tybee Island.

"We figured they would try to figure out ways to block us from accessing the beach," Flowe said.

Flowe, who is credited with founding Tybee Island's Orange Crush, sees parallels between his experience creating the event, historic treatment of Black beachgoers and restrictions being put in place for the 2024 event on the island, including blocked roads and extreme parking restrictions.

"I think it's horrendous they're doing all this because this is a public beach," Flowe said. "I think that it's important for African Americans to be able to access public space without being harassed by policy makers. When you take that tactic, then you get folks who are saying, 'I'm coming on that beach, come hell or high water.'"

Two decades before Flowe decided that a huge beach bash was the best way to put SSU on the map for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, 11 Black students were arrested at Georgia's first wade-in , a demonstration similar to a sit-in, on Tybee.

Orange Crush weekend 2024: Everything you need to know about the event

Prior to the wade-in demonstrations, Black people were forced to travel outside of the city for public beach access. After three years of wade-ins, Tybee's beaches were integrated by October 1963.

"They were jeered at by beachgoers and arrested for disrobing in public," Flowe said. "As a result of this, those young folks who were simply trying to use public water had criminal records. I just anticipated that the authorities would try to figure out a way to prevent the beach party if I didn't conduct myself properly."

Ahead of the inaugural Orange Crush, Flowe and other members of the student government invited students from Spelman College, South Carolina State University, Florida A&M University, Alabama A&M University, Clark Atlanta University and more.

The event, Flowe claimed, was "very well organized," and on April 22, 1989, the first Orange Crush had a football game, relay races, picnic, bikini contest, a male auction, a step show and a body-building contest.

"To me, it looked like 5,000 students showed up, but it might have been 500," Flowe said. "It was really hard to keep track because that wasn't really on our mind and there were just so many students, coming from so many places. Apparently, it was enough for the authorities to feel the need to call out various police agencies."

The two main things Flowe remembered from the first Orange Crush: a lot of people and a lot of law enforcement.

The festival continued to be held and sponsored by SSU, drawing in students from HBCUs in Georgia and along the East Coast, until 1991. SSU severed ties with the event after a dozen arrests, a stabbing and drowning at a singular festiva l, but by that time Tybee Island had been solidified as a place for HBCU spring break celebrations. It continued, unpermitted, drawing crowds year after year.

Organizers and event promoters began taking advantage of the attendance and promoted events on social media that would fall on the same weekend, and as the crowd grew, crimes occurred, setting up conflict between attendees, residents, law enforcement and city leadership.

In attempts to combat the large crowds and the potential for violence, the City of Tybee has implemented aggressive regulations in the past. In 2018, it prohibited open alcoholic beverages and implemented traffic stops and property searches, limited housing rentals, noise and some restaurants and businesses closed.

This resulted in a mediation between the group Concerned Citizens of Tybee and the city by the U.S. Department of Justice. The agreement states that officials should not treat Orange Crush differently than any other special event, permitted or not.

The now unpermitted event known as Orange Crush by locals is shaping up this year to look similar to the event of years past: with lots of law enforcement and barricades to prevent the strain on Tybee Island's resources that it brought last year.

In 2023, the third weekend in April brought more than 111,000 people over the course of three days, and the high volume of people caused clogged roads, traffic accidents, a road rage incident resulting in a shooting, crowding and complaints around drug and alcohol abuse, noise, illegal parking and litter, according to the city.

Tybee's efforts to control Orange Crush crowds

Despite efforts to obtain permits from promoters of previous Orange Crush events, no permits were approved, and Tybee Island officials have set up restrictive access to the beach between April 16-21, including:

Barricades on Butler Avenue will prohibit on-street parking, beginning April 16.

There will be a road safety checkpoint on April 19 going into Tybee.

No on-street parking will be available on Butler Avenue from Second Street to Tybrisa Street.

14th and 15th Street Parking Lots will be closed.

16th Street Parking Lot will be reserved for City of Tybee Island Parking Decals only

Illegally parked vehicles on public property will be towed to the 15th Street parking lot.

An emergency lane will be designated on U.S. Hwy. 80 for First Responder vehicles only

Traffic protocols will be enforced with strategically placed barricades along Butler Avenue to manage the flow efficiently.

Side street entrances on the western side of Butler Avenue will be closed from Lovell Avenue onwards.

Access to Lewis, Miller and Second avenues will be blocked from the Hwy. 80 entrance.

No turns east onto 14th, 15th or Tybrisa Street from Butler Avenue (Residents: Eastbound access available on 14th and 15th Streets)

The island will also have more than 100 extra law enforcement officers, including from the Georgia State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources and Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Tybee Island PD details traffic stops made during Orange Crush weekend

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) – Tybee Island saw 54 arrests and 111 traffic citations over Orange Crush weekend. The annual beach bash brought thousands to the 3-square-mile island.

Each week, the Tybee Island Police Department (TIPD) releases a report detailing the activity their officers encounter. This edition included multiple traffic stops over the weekend.

On Friday, a Tybee officer responded to the Post Office area to assist the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) who had stopped a vehicle for an expired tag. Officials say GSP found several bags of marijuana, possible edibles, cannabis gummies, a candy bar believed to contain hallucinogenic mushrooms and over $5,000 in cash. All three of the vehicle’s occupants were arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, and Possession of a Schedule I Drug.

Also on Friday, when GSP conducted a traffic stop on Highway 80 near Salt Pines, the driver reportedly jumped from the vehicle and ran from the scene leaving his passenger behind. With help from GSP’s Aviation Unit and several agencies, law enforcement searched the north end of the island for the driver. They found the suspect’s shirt near the crawlspace under a home on Officer’s Row. To get the suspect out and surrender, officers deployed a Pepperball into the space. However, the suspect did not emerge and was never found.

Finally, on Friday, TIPD officers pulled over a driver they said was speeding and failing to maintain its lane. Officers said the driver had glassy eyes, delayed reactions and slurred speech. He eventually admitted that he had taken “Ecstacy” and was placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI (Drugs), TIPD said.

On Saturday, a TIPD officer stopped a vehicle traveling in the center lanes reserved for emergency vehicle use. Officers decided to use a K9 to sniff the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert from the dog. According to TIPD, officers found marijuana, a white powdery substance that field tested positive for cocaine, 5-gallon jugs of mixed alcoholic beverages, approximately 200 small plastic bags commonly used for the distribution of illegal substances, a scale and 20 “rice crispy” style treats believed to contain THC. The driver was arrested and charged with Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device, Obstruction and two counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute. The passenger was arrested and charged with two counts of Possession of Intent to Distribute.

Meanwhile, a bystander began to yell at the officers and arrestees. Officers told the bystander he could observe the traffic stop but could not interfere. TIPD said the man continued to obstruct the officers through his disorderly behavior and they arrested him. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction.

TIPD also reported instances of women stealing bicycles and a man urinating in someone’s yard, among other activities. To read the full report, visit here .

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Thousands of Black college students expected this weekend for an annual spring bash at Georgia’s largest public beach will be greeted by dozens of extra police officers and barricades closing off neighborhood streets. While the beach will remain open, officials are blocking access to nearby parking.

Tybee Island east of Savannah has grappled with the April beach party known as Orange Crush since students at Savannah State University, a historically Black school, started it more than 30 years ago. Residents regularly groused about loud music, trash littering the sand and revelers urinating in yards.

Those complaints boiled over into fear and outrage a year ago when weekend crowds of up to 48,000 people daily overwhelmed the 3-mile (4.8 kilometer) island. That left a small police force scrambling to handle a flood of emergency calls reporting gunfire, drug overdoses, traffic jams and fist fights.

Mayor Brian West, elected last fall by Tybee Island’s 3,100 residents, said roadblocks and added police aren’t just for limiting crowds. He hopes the crackdown will drive Orange Crush away for good.

“This has to stop. We can’t have this crowd anymore,” West said. “My goal is to end it.”

Critics say local officials are overreacting and appear to be singling out Black visitors to a Southern beach that only white people could use until 1963. They note Tybee Island attracts vast crowds for the Fourth of July and other summer weekends when visitors are largely white, as are 92% of the island’s residents.

“Our weekends are packed with people all season, but when Orange Crush comes they shut down the parking, bring extra police and act like they have to take charge,” said Julia Pearce, one of the island’s few Black residents and leader of a group called the Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization. She added: “They believe Black folks to be criminals.”

During the week, workers placed metal barricades to block off parking meters and residential streets along the main road parallel to the beach. Two large parking lots near a popular pier are being closed. And Tybee Island’s roughly two dozen police officers will be augmented by about 100 sheriff’s deputies, Georgia state troopers and other officers.

Security plans were influenced by tactics used last month to reduce crowds and violence at  spring break in Miami Beach , which was observed by Tybee Island’s police chief.

Officials insist they’re acting to avoid a repeat of last year’s Orange Crush party, which they say became a public safety crisis with crowds at least double their typical size.

“To me, it has nothing to do with race,” said West, who believes city officials previously haven’t taken a stronger stand against Orange Crush because they feared being called racist. “We can’t let that be a reason to let our citizens be unsafe and so we’re not.”

Tybee Island police reported 26 total arrests during Orange Crush last year. Charges included one armed robbery with a firearm, four counts of fighting in public and five DUIs. Two officers reported being pelted with bottles, and two women told police they were beaten and robbed of a purse.

On a gridlocked highway about a mile off the island, someone fired a gun into a car and injured one person. Officials blamed the shooting on road rage.

Orange Crush’s supporters and detractors alike say it’s not college students causing the worst problems.

Joshua Miller, a 22-year-old Savannah State University senior who plans to attend this weekend, said he wouldn’t be surprised if the crackdown was at least partly motivated by race.

“I don’t know what they have in store,” Miller said. ”I’m not going down there with any ill intent. I’m just going out there to have fun.”

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson was one of the Black students from Savannah State who helped launch Orange Crush in 1988. The university dropped involvement in the 1990s, and Johnson said that over time the celebration “got off the rails.” But he also told reporters he’s concerned about “over-representation of police” at the beach party.

At Nickie’s 1971 Bar & Grill near the beach, General Manager Sean Ensign said many neighboring shops and eateries will close for Orange Crush though his will stay open, selling to-go food orders like last year. But with nearby parking spaces closed, Ensign said his profits might take a hit, “possibly a few thousand dollars.”

It’s not the first time Tybee Island has targeted the Black beach party. In 2017, the city council banned alcohol and amplified music on the beach only during Orange Crush weekend. A discrimination complaint to the U.S. Justice Department resulted in city officials signing  a non-binding agreement  to impose uniform rules for large events.

West says Orange Crush is different because it’s promoted on social media by people who haven’t obtained permits. A new  state law  lets local governments recoup public safety expenses from organizers of unpermitted events.

In February, Britain Wigfall was denied an permit for space on the island for food trucks during Orange Crush. The mayor said Wigfall has continued to promote events on the island.

Wigfall, 30, said he’s promoting a concert this weekend in Savannah, but nothing on Tybee Island involving Orange Crush.

“I don’t control it,” Wigfall said. “Nobody controls the date that people go down there.”
