Uni Watch Tour ’24 Report: Minneapolis!

uts uni tour

Greetings from L.A., where I arrived yesterday. Had dinner with some friends and am looking forward to today’s Uni Watch Tour ’24 activities!

But first I want to tell you about the wonderful Sunday I had in Minneapolis. The day began with a pre-party gathering at Jimmy Lonetti’s great D&J Glove Repair shop. That’s him posing with me in the photo above. As you can see, he went the extra mile by ordering a banner for the occasion (and I  went the extra mile by wearing Uni Watch stirrups and one of our 2016 T-shirts).

Jim’s shop, in addition to being a working leather-repair business, is an incredible memorabilia museum. It leans heavily on Twins stuff, but there’s plenty of other material sprinkled throughout (including some Uni Watch items, I’m proud to say). These photos should give you an idea of how much fun the place is:

uts uni tour

A bunch of readers came by to check out the scene, including Mike Menner, who wore a Nicollet Park groundskeeper’s jacket from Ebbets Field Flannels:

uts uni tour

Jason Tierney lives in Boston but happened to be in Minneapolis for a family event — perfect timing! I really enjoyed talking with him and am hoping he’ll also come down to our NYC event this Sunday:

uts uni tour

Clint Wrede has been a reader and active commenter on the blog since 2006! Not only that, but he works as a librarian at the University of Northern Iowa — UNI! It was great to meet him after all these years:

uts uni tour

And here’s a group shot of some of the folks who were on hand:

uts uni tour

Soon it was time to leave for Gluek’s (pronounced “Glick’s”), where Jimmy had arranged for us to have the place all to ourselves:

uts uni tour

Much like Jimmy’s shop, Gluek’s is something of a museum, devoted primarily to itself. Here are some pics I took:

uts uni tour

Some of the people who showed up earlier at Jimmy’s shop also came to Gluek’s, plus a bunch of additional people showed up. Here are some of them:

I loved Jim Wagner’s vintage baseball jersey. Check out this chain-stitching:

uts uni tour

I also loved this vintage 1960s Kentucky baseball warm-up shirt that Andy (didn’t get his last name) wore. It had previously belonged to his father, who played for the Wildcats:

uts uni tour

It’s always a pleasure to see Ron Ruelle ( creator of the Brooklyn Branches , don’tcha know — note the official Branch Rickety pin on his jersey!), who came in from North Carolina:

uts uni tour

Incredibly, there was an attendee whose first name is Lukas and another named Luke (which was my nickname throughout high school). Crazy, right? I didn’t get their last names, but here they are — Lukas followed by Luke (who wore an awesome St. Paul Saints “pig logo” cap):

uts uni tour

Speaking of names, it was so great to see my old zine pal Yoonie Helbig, who I’ve known for nearly 30 years but hadn’t seen in nearly a decade. Yes, her name is Yoonie — so now you can Yoonie-watch:

uts uni tour

I was super-stoked to see Matt Heitkamp wearing the original Uni Watch tequila sunrise T-shirt, which was part of our Uni Watch T-shirt Club in 2015:

uts uni tour

I very much enjoyed meeting brothers Jacob and Sam Rosenbaum. That’s Sam with the stirrups, although his high-top sneakers obscured the cutouts, grrrr:

uts uni tour

I feel bad that I don’t recall this guy’s name, but I liked his T-shirt:

uts uni tour

I know there were a few folks I didn’t get photos of, including Ray and Debbie, and probably a few others I’m forgetting. Sorry, people!

And get this: Gluek’s had the Twins game playing on the TV, and who should be pitching for Minnesota that day but MLB’s premier hosiery hero himself, Chris Paddack! It was the perfect backdrop for our event:

uts uni tour

Before we wrapped up, Jimmy Lonetti gave me the perfect parting gift — a pair of tube socks with striping in Uni Watch colors (thanks to Jim Wagner for this photo):

uts uni tour

Eventually it was time to go, and I was amused by this procession of Uni Watchers walking to their cars:

uts uni tour

All in all, a very good day!

Before I wrap this up, I want to take a minute to salute Jimmy Lonetti — not just for his key role in putting this day together, but also for the dedication, creativity, and fun that he brings to just about everything he touches (including his day job as a mailman, where he dresses in vintage postal uniforms ). Like me, he recently turned 60, but he’s retained a boyish twinkle in his eye that we can all learn from. I know we’re going to remain friends, and that makes me very happy. Thanks for everything, buddy — hope to see you again soon.

Membership Update

uts uni tour

Membership card designer Scott M.X. Turner has been hard at work on all the orders we received on Purple Amnesty Day. He did a particularly spectacular job on Benjamin Gray’s card, which is based on NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Blaney’s Kobe Bryant tribute paint job . Hideous car, magnificent card!

You can see the other newly designed cards in the membership gallery , where we’ve now surpassed the 3,500-card mark. Amazing!

Remember, the membership program will shut down at the end of Sunday so move fast if you want to get on board. As always, you can sign up for your own custom-designed card here , you can see all the cards we’ve designed so far here , and you can see how we produce the cards here .

25 Years and I've Somehow Never Made This Joke Before

uts uni tour

Last night’s dinner: uni watch.

uts uni tour

Our latest raffle winners are Achilles Three, Clarke Hall, and Zevi Lowenberg, each of whom has won a complimentary Uni Watch membership card. Congrats to them, and thanks again to Jon Dies for sponsoring this one.

After today, I will have five days remaining at Uni Watch. — Paul

Your Full Purp Walk ’24 Report!

Paul wearing a soccer shirt! I thought I’d never see the day.

Both D&J and the bar seem like relentlessly fun places.

The Mpls shirt was mine, Cole Trace. So glad I was able to make it.

As a huge fan of uni (the sushi kind), as well as of this site, I had to let you know that it was worth waiting 25 years for that joke.

Paul’s been urchin to make that uni joke for some time now.

NCAA softball 2024: Scores, WCWS schedule, how to watch

Tiare Jennings gives Oklahoma the lead with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning vs. the Ducks. (0:30)

Can Oklahoma make history and become the first softball program to four-peat? Or will someone dethrone the Sooners?

The road to the 2024 Women's College World Series has officially begun. For the first time since 2018, Oklahoma did not get the top seed in the NCAA softball tournament. Instead, that honor belongs to No. 1 Texas, which advanced to the super regionals Sunday. The Sooners are the No. 2 seed and also advanced Sunday.

We're down to 16 teams. The super regionals will feature seven teams from the SEC, four teams from the Big 12, three teams from the Pac-12 and two teams from the ACC. Unseeded schools Arizona and Baylor will join the 14 other regional hosts.

We continue to break down each regional and provide you with schedule updates , scores and how to watch the NCAA tournament.

Campus tours can be stressful. East Tennessee State University recommends asking these key questions.

Touring a college campus anytime soon?

It can be difficult to know what questions you should ask both yourself and your tour guide. Campus tours can be intimidating and overwhelming to prospective students, but here are some questions to keep in mind:

What are the missions and values of this institution, and do they align with my values and priorities?

Being knowledgeable on the key principles of a college is important to understanding if you are compatible with an institution at a fundamental level.

Does this institution have programs of study, organizations and extracurriculars that I can see myself participating in?

Determine if a school is a good fit by investigating its academic programs and student life initiatives.

yoga with baby goats

What do I hope to receive and accomplish from my college experience, and does this institution meet these requirements?

Making a list of what you want to gain from your college experience and comparing it to what an institution offers can quickly narrow down potential schools. Additionally, if your ideal job has a required or recommended degree, can this institution provide the necessary education?

How can faculty and staff support students when things are tough?

Pursuing a degree is notably hard work, so it is important to ensure that there are systems in place to support students through rough patches.

Is this a community where I can see myself growing and having the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone?

College is a major stepping-stone into self-discovery. Ensuring that an institution will help you grow and explore new aspects of yourself is crucial.

What is the surrounding region like and are there available opportunities and activities related to your interests?

The culture and opportunities a region can offer impact your decision when choosing the best fit.

What does a day-in-the-life look like as a student at this institution?

Receiving insight into what day-to-day life looks like can help you imagine a realistic life and schedule for yourself as a student at a specific institution.

“Tour guides are proud to share why they love this place and why they love their school. Ask those questions,” said Timothy Lewis, director of New Student and Family Programs at East Tennessee State University.

Campus tours and their guides are there to help answer any questions prospective students might have. Schedule a campus tour of ETSU . Read our frequently asked questions for more information.

East Tennessee State University was founded in 1911 with a singular mission: to improve the quality of life for people in the region and beyond. Through its world-class health sciences programs and interprofessional approach to health care education, ETSU is a highly respected leader in rural health research and practices. Cicada map 2024: See where to find Brood XIX and XIII − and where they've already been spotted

uts uni tour

For many Americans, the cicadas are here .

Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.

Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.

So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.

Are cicadas dangerous? Busting myths on the harmfulness of the noisy pests.

Are cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas  are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

How one Wilmington bus tour honors 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education

uts uni tour

One 76-year-old University of Delaware student had an idea.

Karen Ingram had been cultivating interest in a particular chapter of Delaware history long before she enrolled. Now, about to earn her first master's degree this spring, almost all of her academic writings have surrounded this history. Her own experience led her to it. And this weekend, she got to share that passion on "The Trail to Desegregation."

Ingram, empowered by community partners for a final capstone project, marked the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision with a bus tour. It would trace Delaware's own roots in this landmark desegregation ruling, as the sold-out Saturday tour made stops at Redding House Museum and Community Center, Howard High School, Claymont Community Center and Hockessin Colored School #107C.

"I wanted to tell the whole story," Ingram said, knowing people rarely get to put all these pieces together. "That is what got us here. I wanted to tell the whole story, on a half-day ride on a bus."

By Saturday morning, some 40 people would pack that fitting school bus in front of now-Howard High School of Technology, once the only high school serving Black students in the state and one of the earliest in the nation. Seats filled with fellow organizers, members of the public and a few special guests.

And while the bus rolled down the street, these Delaware institutions have quietly weaved their own way into well-known national history. Seemingly everyone understands the Brown v. Board of Education decision, eventually stripping the country of its "separate but equal" doctrine, to be one of the most seminal cases in American history.

But many might need a reminder of how closely Delaware is tied to the same story.

Wilmington with two school districts? Delaware’s latest redistricting vision to take shape

Reclaiming connections

Ingram has been hungry to learn more about this history.

Coming to Delaware as a young woman, the New Jersey native took a job working as a legal secretary for Louis L. Redding in 1968, first as a Goldey-Beacom College co-op student. The Wilmington powerhouse lawyer and civil rights advocate had helped lead the legal team on two cases challenging school segregation in Delaware, then at the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board.

Only, as a 21-year-old, Ingram didn't realize it. She left the work for a corporate job, hoping for better benefits.

"I did not know at the time being, you know, that the man who I was working for was very powerful," Ingram recalled. In fact, growing up in New Jersey, in school, in early years of corporate work, she was often in majority-white spaces.

"I did not realize that I lacked a lot of knowledge in African history, of my African American history," she said. "So, I had an opportunity to go to the University of Delaware, and my focus was on African American subjects."

Working within community organizations, earning a bachelor's in her 50s, this master's before 80, soon going for her doctorate — she has been soaking up as much as she can ever since. And rather than write a thesis for her program, Ingram decided to create a project to honor Redding’s legacy.

It started by getting on the bus.

School rankings: U.S. News & World Report just ranked Delaware’s top schools. But what do they miss?

'The Trail to Desegregation'

The family home of Ingram's once-boss is more than a house today.

Tour takers saw a Redding House Museum and Community Center maintained by its own foundation, now also a historical landmark located near downtown Wilmington. After rehabilitation that followed in 1997, it looks to honor Redding’s legacy, one of impact on civil rights, community and law.

During the more than 50 years that he practiced law in Delaware, according to the foundation, the state's first Black attorney handled cases that challenged discrimination in housing, public accommodations, employment and criminal justice.

Redding's two Delaware cases would consolidate with four other cases, now collectively remembered as Brown v. Board of Education. Those cases were Bulah v. Gebhart and Gebhart v. Belton.

"Does anyone know why we're on a bus?" Ingram posed from the front, looking back at her tour as it moved along.

Everyone got the idea. In 1951, the families of Ethel Louise Belton and Shirley Barbara Bulah hired Redding in two separate cases, suing the state for refusing to provide transportation to attend the schools closest to their homes. Belton was required to attend Howard High School, a forced 20-mile round trip on public transportation, while living just blocks from all-white Claymont High. Bulah attended Hockessin Colored School #107-C, even though a white school would have been much closer for the 7-year-old.

Now Claymont Community Center, the high school once housed the "Claymont Twelve," a group of Black students who successfully integrated the school under court order in 1952, according to organizers, despite the Delaware attorney general's instructions not to do it.

Most further desegregation ceased until cases made their way through the Supreme Court. And, though the coming decision called for "immediate" stop to segregated schools, the reality would play out much more slowly. In Delaware, school segregation in some areas persisted until the late '60s.

Hockessin Colored School #107C ceased operations after desegregation. After a rocky road, the school has now been restored and transformed into a Center for Diversity and Social Equity. In 2022, President Joe Biden protected the site, having signed a law incorporating Hockessin Colored School #107 into the National Park System among other additions.

Biden and parks: Delaware played a big role in Brown v. Board of Education. So did this Hockessin school

“The Trail to Desegregation: A Journey to Freedom and Equality” — Ingram's project coming together thanks to help from Delaware Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Delaware Heritage Commission, the Delaware Historical Society and more partners — followed these markers in a loop, while speakers and tours padded it with historical context.

The cases they traced went on to reshape education across the country, even as new challenges persist today. Students, families, communities in Delaware helped fuel this May 17, 1954, decision finding racial segregation in schools unconstitutional in the United States.

Ingram hopes people take that with them, maybe even fueling future tours.

"In the '50s, people were not supposed to be an advocate for their rights; they were just supposed to let things be the way they are," she said. "So I'd like to think that people will know: There is an opportunity for anybody who wants to change things. They can do that."
