The gondolas plying the busy Grand Canal and the smaller waterways of Venice are one of the most iconic images in the world. They are the symbol of history, tradition, and romance in the city on the lagoon, and a gondola ride in Venice ranks among one of the most dreamed-about experiences for travelers.

So when you finally get to Venice and have a chance to ride in one of its gondolas, you should go, right? That depends. While undeniably romantic and a one-of-a-kind experience, gondola rides also can be expensive, and sometimes they are a letdown for visitors.

Here are a few tips to help you decide if a gondola ride is for you and how to get the most out of your ride should you take the plunge.

What Is a Venetian Gondola?

While gondolas were once regularly used by Venetians, especially the upper classes, today,  vaporetti  have become the main form of water transportation in Venice. A few hundred years ago, there were about 10,000 gondolas plying the canals and lagoon, but today, there are only about 400.

A gondola is a flat-bottomed, wooden boat. It's 36 feet long, weighs 1,300 pounds, and is hand built in special workshops called  squeri,  of which there are still a few today. Gondoliers own and maintain their own boats, and the crafts and careers are often passed down from father to son for generations.

How much does a gondola ride cost.

Gondola fares are standard and set officially. As of this writing, rates are 80 euros for a daytime ride and 100 euros for rides after 7 pm. Rides last about 30 minutes. If you want to extend your time on the water, you'll pay 40 euros for each additional 20 minutes aboard—or 50 euros after 7 p.m.

You can check the current  gondola fares  before you book. And be aware that if you book a gondola ride through a hotel or agency, there's likely to be an additional fee.

Gondolas hold six people. They can be shared without affecting the fee. So if you're traveling solo or with another person, you can find other travelers with whom to share the ride. It's not quite as romantic but will save you some euros.

What to Expect on a Gondola Ride

A gondola is like a luxury car. Although black is the official color, many are ornately decorated and have comfortable seats and blankets. You can stroll around and look for one that suits your fancy.

Most gondoliers will speak some English and maybe a little German or French. They must wear black pants, a striped shirt, and closed dark shoes. They usually have a banded straw hat but don't always wear it. In busier areas where they know the next boatload of tourists is waiting to hand over their money, gondoliers may try to cut the ride short instead of rowing the full 40 minutes. This is a good reason to choose a gondola away from the most congested areas (see below).

The image of a singing gondolier is more a product of Hollywood movies than reality. Singing is not a requirement for a gondolier, and although some may sing, it's best not to expect it. Some gondoliers may offer some sightseeing narration during the ride, but don't expect this either.

Gondoliers stand up to row and use only one oar, as this is the best way to row through the narrow canals of Venice. Discuss it with the gondolier before the ride if you want to go to a particular place. There may be an extra fee involved.

Gondolas do not have awnings or sun umbrellas, so you'll be riding under the full sun on a hot summer day. While it costs more, at sunset or after dark, a gondola ride is off-the-charts romantic and beautiful. Early mornings' cool temperatures and soft light are also prime riding time.

Where to Go on a Gondola Ride

Most people recommend taking a gondola ride on the quiet back canals rather than on the crowded Grand Canal. Riding on canals outside the main tourist area lets you see a different view of Venice, and there won't be bumper-to-bumper gondolas. Good places to find gondolas away from the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Square include the San Polo and Campo San Barnaba areas and the Jewish Ghetto.

Is a Gondola Ride for You?

Gondolas allow you to see Venice from a different perspective and better appreciate how the city functions with canals instead of streets. They are undeniably overpriced and possibly overrated. If you feel like you'll regret not taking a gondola ride in Venice, then our advice is to not miss out on what may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Now, if all you want to do is get into a gondola, you can take a two-minute traghetto across the Grand Canal. A traghetto is an empty gondola used to ferry passengers back and forth across the canal. While it might not be so romantic, it's much cheaper, and you get a great view of the Grand Canal.

Alternatives

If a gondola ride is not for you due to price, lack of accessibility for those with disabilities, or other reasons, there are alternatives.

One of the best options is a ride on an ACTV vaporetto. As mentioned before, vaporetti have become the most common form of transportation around Venice's waterways. One of the many perks of the vaporetti is the accessibility.

Hiring a gondola tour is a pretty straightforward experience. However, there are several ways to go about it and a few things to understand ahead of time.

First things first, you’ll need to locate a gondola station. They’re scattered throughout the city, usually near major landmarks and along the Grand Canal. Just look for the distinctive black gondolas bobbing near the water’s edge.

The official rate for a 30-minute gondola ride is set by the city of Venice – as of my last ride, it was 80 euros during the day and 100 euros after 7 PM. It costs the same whether there is one person aboard or six so don’t let a gondolier take you into paying more unless it’s longer than a 30-minute gondola ride or it is after 7pm.

Step 3: Negotiate the Details

Before you hop on your gondola ride, make sure to discuss the route and duration with your gondolier. A standard gondola ride lasts about 30 minutes, but you can negotiate for a longer gondola tour if you wish – just be prepared to pay extra. Each gondola has a capacity for six people, and the fare remains the same regardless of the number of passengers. If you are traveling alone or with one other person, you can consider finding fellow travelers to share the gondola ride with, which may not be as romantic but can save you some euros.

You don’t have to find people to share the gondola ride with you if you book in advance. Here’s a link to where you can buy passes. You pick the time and place and the service will make sure that there are others booking with you. 

Do you tip the gondolier?

Tipping the gondolier is not mandatory or expected in Venice. However, if you had an exceptional gondola ride and would like to show appreciation for the service provided, you can offer a tip as a gesture of gratitude. It is entirely at your discretion, but I wouldn’t give more than 5%. Your gondolier may even refuse the tip so don’t insist too much. 

What is the best time for a gondola ride?

When’s the best time to take a gondola ride in Venice? Well, in my experience, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this. It really depends on what you’re looking for.

Keep in mind that the gondola rides typically start at around 9am in the summer but later in the winter. They generally stop running around 10pm, but can extend into the wee hours of the night depending on the gondolier. There are no set times for when they start and finish so consider booking ahead of time if you want an early or late ride whether through an online booking agency or your hotel. 

As far as the best time to go, if you’re a fan of stunning vistas and love the idea of the sun setting over the canals, sunset gondola ride is a must. There’s something truly magical about Venice at dusk, with the city’s lights reflecting off the water. Plus, the canals tend to be less crowded in the evening, so you’ll get a more peaceful, romantic experience .

It does cost extra to go at this time, however. 

On the other hand, if you’re an early bird, a morning gondola ride can be equally enchanting. You’ll get to see Venice waking up, with locals going about their day and the city slowly coming to life. It’s a quieter, more authentic side of Venice that most tourists don’t get to see.

As for the time of year, Venice is beautiful in every season. But if you ask me, I’d say spring and fall are the best times to visit. The weather is mild, the city is less crowded, and the gondola rides are just as delightful.

But no matter when you choose to go, remember this: every gondola ride in Venice is unique. So sit back, relax, and let the city’s charm wash over you. Trust me, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Do you need to book in advance?

You don’t need to book a gondola ride in advance, but I highly recommend that you do. Here are some things to keep in mind:

• Availability: Venice is a highly popular tourist destination, and gondola rides are in high demand. By booking in advance, you ensure that you secure a spot for your desired date and time. If you wait until the last minute, you may find limited availability and the wait times to get on one will be very long. 
• Convenience: Pre-booking a gondola ride allows you to plan your itinerary more efficiently and avoid disappointment. You can choose a specific date and time that suits your schedule and have the assurance that everything is arranged. This can be particularly important if you have limited time in Venice or if you have a specific time slot in mind.
• Peace of Mind: Making a reservation ahead of time provides peace of mind, knowing that you have secured your gondola ride and won’t have to worry about availability or missing out on the experience. It allows you to relax and enjoy your time in Venice without the stress of last-minute arrangements.
• Customization: Some gondola ride providers offer additional services or packages that can be booked in advance. For example, you might have the option to include a musician or a serenade during your ride, or even combine the gondola ride with other activities or attractions. You’re also able to see the routes available and pick the ride that best works for what you want to see.

However, check out the following locations if you want to be spontaneous and you might get lucky and find a gondola ready and waiting for you:

• St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco): This is one of the most popular starting points for gondola rides. The area is always bustling with activity and the gondola ride from here offers stunning views of the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. However, keep in mind that the Grand Canal can be very busy with boat traffic and other gondolas so it might not be the best spot for a private gondola ride. Especially if you are looking for a romantic gondola ride!
• Rialto Bridge: Another popular starting point for gondola rides. The Rialto Bridge is one of the oldest and most iconic bridges in Venice. The gondola ride from here offers a unique perspective of the Grand Canal and the city’s historic buildings.
• Santa Maria del Giglio Gondola Park: This is a less crowded starting point for a gondola ride. The ride from here takes you through some of the quieter canals, offering a more peaceful and intimate experience.
• Bacino Orseolo: Located behind St. Mark’s Square in front of the Hard Rock Cafe , this is a great place to start a gondola ride if you want to explore the smaller, quieter canals of Venice away from the Grand Canal.

Let’s talk about how to make your gondola ride truly unforgettable. Because let’s face it, a gondola ride in Venice is more than just a tick on your bucket list—it’s a memory you’ll cherish forever. So, here are my top tips to make the most of your gondola experience:

• 1. Print Your Voucher: If you’ve bought a gondola ride pass online, make sure to print out your voucher to avoid disappointment. I can’t stress this enough. The gondoliers can’t scan the code on your smartphone, so you’ll need to hand them a physical copy. It’s a bit old school, I know, but hey, we’re in a city that’s over a thousand years old!
• 2. Pack an Umbrella: Venice’s weather can be unpredictable, and there’s no protection from the sun or rain on a gondola. So, do yourself a favor and bring an umbrella. It can double as a parasol on sunny days!
• 3. Check for Acqua Alta Warnings: In the winter, Venice can experience ‘ acqua alta ‘ or high water, which makes it impossible for gondolas to get under the bridges. If you’re visiting during this time, usually in the late fall and early winter, make sure to check for acqua alta warnings. But don’t worry, the tides usually go down after a few hours. Not only that, but you’ll be able to have a private gondola ride on the Grand Canal even during acqua alta since here are no low bridges to contend with.
• 4. Choose Your Gondolier Wisely: Not all gondoliers are created equal. Some are more talkative and informative than others. If you’re interested in learning about the city’s history and architecture during your ride, look for a gondolier who seems friendly and approachable. Ask your gondolier if he can talk to you about the city as you ride. Consider giving a tip if he made the gondola ride memorable with funny anecdotes or gave you some insider tips to visit the city.
• 5. Bring a Bottle of Wine: Want to make your gondola ride extra special? Bring along a bottle of wine. There’s nothing quite like sipping a glass of Prosecco as you glide through the canals of Venice. Just remember to drink responsibly and keep the canals clean.
• 7. Enjoy the Silence: Finally, don’t forget to take a moment to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the silence. The hustle and bustle of the city fade away when you’re on the canals, leaving you with a sense of peace and tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.
• 8. Share the Gondola: If you are visiting Venice on a budget or are not looking for a romantic gondola ride, then a shared gondola ride is the way to go. The price of the gondola is fixed so when you bring up to five people on board, you are only paying a fraction of the cost. This is literally the only option for a cheap gondola ride since the price can’t be haggled. Well, there is one other option for a cheap gondola ride and that is to take the traghetto (gondola ferry service) across the Grand Canal. These look like regular gondolas but much bigger and are rowed by two gondoliers. However, the ride only takes a few minutes but it’s a really cheap gondola ride at only 2 euros.

Gondola etiquette

Here are some tips to help you navigate your gondola ride like a pro:

• 1. Respect the Gondolier: First and foremost, remember that your gondolier is a professional. They’re not just there to steer the boat; they’re also your guide to the city’s history and culture. So, listen to their stories, ask questions, and show them the respect they deserve. And while it might be tempting to ask them to belt out a tune, it’s actually considered poor etiquette. Not all gondoliers are singers, and they’re not obligated to perform. If they offer to sing, that’s great, but it’s best not to ask. If you really want to be serenaded then book a gondola ride that includes a musician that comes along with you.
• 2. Ask Before You Bring Wine: Planning to bring a bottle of wine on board? Make sure to ask your gondolier first. Some gondoliers might not allow it, while others might be fine with it. It’s always better to ask beforehand to avoid any awkward situations.
• 3. Don’t Rock the Boat: Literally. Gondolas are pretty stable, but they can tip if you’re not careful. So, try to keep still during your gondola ride, especially when you’re getting on and off the boat. Find your spot and stick with it for the entirety of the ride. This is especially important to remember when on the Grand Canal as the waves are a bit choppy there so moving around can be precarious.
• 4. Dress Appropriately: Venice is a city with a rich history and a deep respect for tradition. So, while there’s no strict dress code for a gondola ride, it’s a good idea to dress respectfully. • 5. Have cash: Unless you prebooked your gondola ride, you will need to have cash for the payment. The gondoliers don’t have POS machines to accept card payments.
• 6. Don’t haggle the price: The prices for gondola ride fixed times are set by the city and the gondolier can’t give you a special price. Haggling will get you nowhere. However, you can haggle for the duration of the ride if you want it to be longer than the 30 minutes that is typical. However, you will pay more for that. 

Remember, a gondola ride is a unique experience, and part of that experience is respecting the city’s traditions and the people who make it possible. So, keep these etiquette tips in mind, and you’re sure to have a smooth and enjoyable ride.

The Gondola is the most famous traditional Venetian boat. It is an 11 m long and 1,42 m wide handmade boat , built with 280 pieces of 8 different kinds of wood , weighing about 400 kg. Gondolas are built in traditional Venetian dockyards called “squeri,” and every gondola needs about six months to be made. The final cost of a gondola is around 40.000 euros .

General information about the Gondola in Venice

Below you will find crucial information about the Venetian gondola, such as its measures and the differences with other traditional Venetian rowing boats. Ready?

There are 3 things in common to all traditional Venetian rowing boats:

• All are flat bottomed. Traditional Venetian rowing boats don’t have a keel!
• The don’t have a rudder. The rower at the back of the boat stirs the boat by pivoting an oar in an (open) oarlock, a forcola.
• Rowing is performed standing up, looking forward, and pushing.

These characteristics are standard in all traditional Venetian rowing boats , as they are a consequence of the shallow lagoon in which Venice was built.

The flat bottom and the absence of the rudder allowed Venetian boats to navigate over very shallow waters. Similarly, the standing position gave rowers the opportunity to see in advance which route to take. In fact, rowers can understand the depth of the water ahead by how the waves move on the surface.

Apart for its elegance and beauty, there are other elements that set the gondola apart from other Venetian rowing boats.

Unique features of Venice gondola

Two characteristics of the gondola are quite known. First, the gondola is asymmetric. Second, it is stirred from an elevated position at the stern. However, both these two features are not unique and shared with the lesser known “pupparin” boat.

Unlike any other boat, however, the gondola has a unique shape which keeps only 60% of the length submerged. Moreover, the boat is characterized by two peculiar ornaments , the big “fero da prova” on the front and the smaller “riço” at the back of the boat.

The front ornament , in particular, is an element that is not just decorative and part of the tradition, but also necessary as it adds weight to the bow of the gondola, counterbalancing the weight of the gondolier at the stern !

For centuries, gondolas have been a crucial element of Venetian life. Today, things are a bit different.

The gondola in Venice today

Blak gondolas are the most famous boats in Venice

Today, Venetian gondolas are most known as a black boat used in Venice for tours through the narrow canals of the city. Gondoliers, in fact, offer visitors the possibility to ride on a gondola through Venice for a fixed price of 80 euros for a 25-30 minutes tour.

As of today, there are only 260 to 280 such work gondolas, for a total of 430+ gondoliers and 160+ substitutes . However, there are few things worth mentioning.

Gondolas are one (the most famous, indeed) of several types Venetian boats, and they are not the only type of boat used for tours. Also “ sandolo ” boats, in fact, are used for tours through Venice . For obvious reasons, those who row a “sandolo” for work, are not called “gondolieri,” but “sandolisti.”

Work gondolas are all black, no doubt, but gondolas exist in many other colors! Think of the car models of the taxis in your city. Taxis might well be yellow, but that does not imply that all such car models must be yellow. Work gondolas must be black, but there are over 100 gondolas which are not used for work !

Rowing , in fact, can also be a sport or a leisure . It should come as no surprise that gondolas, the queens of all traditional Venetian boats, are the most appreciated boat amongst athletes and Venetian rowing lovers.

Gondolas can be colorful or plain, like the other traditional Venetian boats

Gondolas used for leisure typically retain the color of wood. Few can even be painted in black. In no case, however, do they have all the decorations, seats and pillows typical of work gondolas.

Most sports gondolas, on the other hand, belong to clubs and are painted with the according colors.

An exception are the gondolas part of the town hall fleet, which are painted in plain bright colors. Those boats, and other type of traditional Venetian boats, are used by rowers during official rowing competitions.

The sports gondola are less fancy than their cousins

What is peculiar about sports gondolas and other Venetian rowing boats used for competitions, is that they are stripped off everything that is not necessary for the race . Such boats, in fact, have no benches, no seats, and no floor !

The only “paioli,” the wooden tiles which make up the floor on which to stand, that are kept in competitions boats are those on which rowers need to put their feet on while rowing!

The origins of the gondola

The word “ gondola ” was first used by the Doge Vitale Falier back in 1093 C.E. , but it’s origin stem from a boat, “scaula,” in use since early 900.

Compared to today’s gondola, the original version was much broader, much shorter, and symmetrical . Bow and stern laid flatter than those of today, and the front and rear ornaments of the ancient gondola were but simple metal blades.

The evolving shape of the gondola in Venice

In late 15-hundred , gondola makers started changing the shape of the gondola. They made longer and thinner hull, whose extremities came out of the water .

These changes were necessary due to the growth of the city and the need to navigate through a multitude of narrow canals. The new gondolas were easier and faster to maneuver as a smaller portion of the boat was submerged, diminishing friction.

The gondola in Venice as a symbol of power

With this new design, the gondola soon became a favorite amongst Venetians. In fact, in 1600 C.E. there were over 10.000 gondolas in Venice!

The gondolas, however, became also a symbol of power for Venetian families , which started decorating their gondolas in magnificent ways.

The final shape of Venice Gondola is designed for better one-man rowing

During 1800, the gondola’s length reached 11 m, the same as today, and its stern and bow were lifted even farther. It was only at the beginning of the XX century, however, that the gondola reached its final shape, with an even higher stern and bow, and a strong asymmetry, which makes it easier for the gondolier to control the boat.

Venetian families spent so much money and energy to have the most beautiful and luxurious gondolas , that the Serenissima government had to intervene!

On the 8th of October 1562, in fact, the Venice Senate decided to halt this “fever” and passed a law that forced all gondolas to be painted in black.

Gondola rides in Venice determined the look of ``modern`` gondolas

The gondolas we see today , however, are different from those of the past for one more reason: they lack the “ felze.”

The “felze” was a removable shell made of wood and metal, that covered the passengers . It was used and much appreciated for two simple reasons: it shielded passengers from the cold wind in the winter and the hot sun in the summer, and it protected them from prying eyes.

In fact, Venice was the city of parties, luxury, masks, and sex, and the felze was an essential part of the gondola for hundreds of years!

The felze is thought to have been abandoned due to the growing number of tourists coming to Venice since early 19hundred.

Visitors didn’t appreciate much the intimacy of this covered cabin, as the reason for most of them to board a gondola was to see the city, rather than having an intimate encounter.

Curiosities about the Gondola in Venice:

Why is the gondola asymmetric?

We mentioned before that the gondola evolved to become asymmetric to improve maneuverability . But why would something asymmetrical be easier to stir than something which is symmetrical? Right?! Well, let’s explain it better.

On every Venetian boat, the boat is stirred from the back . The rower at the back pivots a long oar on the oarlock that is at his right . The moment the rower PUSHES the oar, which is on the right of the boat, the boat rotates to the left .

In the case of the gondola, however, its asymmetric shape tends to make the boat turn to the right . This way, the forces created by the natural form of the boat and the rowing of the gondolier are counterbalanced and make it easy to go straight , even though the rowing happens only on one side.

Note: Despite being symmetrical, all Venetian boats can be rowed only by one person. However, on such boats, the counter-force that has to be applied by the rower to keep the boat straight is much higher than the force needed on a gondola!

The forcola, the beautiful Venetian oarlock, has such a peculiar shape as it gives the rower the possibility of pivoting its oars on different spots .

The oarlock makes it possible to row forward slowly, row forward fast, turn quickly, slow down, row backward , and finally stop the boat.

What else has to be noted is the fact that the “forcola” is not an oarLOCK . The forcola, in fact, is open and the oar can be quickly removed from it , making it possible to promptly park the boat or avoid striking other boats with it.

What's the difference with punting?

Venetian rowing is entirely different from punting, as the propulsion of the boat is given by the displacement of water caused by the movement of the oar .

Unlike poles used for punting, the blade of the Venetian oar is broad and has two sides .

One side of the oar has a hydrodynamic edge that is used for “breaking” the resistance caused by water during the pushing, while the other side is smooth .

How can I become a gondolier?

It’s highly unlikely for any person that was not born in Venice to have a chance at becoming a gondolier. It’s a fact.

Moreover, in the last preliminary examination to become a gondolier in May 2018, 60 people passed the test. However, only 5 of them   did not have a gondolier as a relative .

How does a Venetian become a gondolier?

P assing the preliminary examination is just the first step. After, one must follow classes of Venetian rowing, Venetian history, and language classes , organized by the gondola guild.

Finally, it’s time for the final and hardest examination:

Passing the final exam gives one the title of “sostituto gondoliere,” a substitute.

The job of a substitute is to row a gondola on behalf of a gondolier who owns a gondola license granted by the city. The revenue generated by the substitute is then split between the substitute and the gondolier.

If a substitute works on behalf of only one gondolier, he keeps 60% of the revenue. If a substitute works for more gondoliers, his share drops to 50%.

A gondolier has the opportunity to either have a substitute work in his place and keep a good share of the revenue or work by himself and keep 100% of it.

That is the reason why all substitutes want to own a gondola license. There are two ways for a substitute to become a gondolier: he either buys a gondola license from a gondolier who intends to retire or waits until the town hall hands out a few more licenses.

While in theory it is not permitted to sell a city license, it is common practice and is, actually, the most common way to become a gondolier, despite the fact that the price of a license is several hundred thousand euros .

In fact, permits are handed out by the city only once every few (sometimes many) years, and only a dozen at a time .

In August 2010, Giorgia Boscolo became Venice’s first official gondolier. (Before her, Alex Hai obtained to work as a gondolier for hotels legally, despite not having a license).

Today, there are a few women gondoliers, and more will be coming very soon!

If you’re planning a trip to Venice, chances are you’ve seen your fair share of gondola photos and videos.

Gondolas are one of the most iconic and traditional Venetian experiences, so it’s just normal that you would want to go for a gondola ride while in Venice.

However you’ve also heard they’re expensive and touristy, so you’re wondering, is it really worth it?

In this guide I’ve included everything you need to know about doing a gondola ride in Venice , including average price, where to book, what to expect and more.

Going for a gondola ride in Venice

But first, what is a gondola?

A gondola is a traditional Venetian wooden rowing boat with a flat-bottom and high points at each end.

It’s very narrow and powered by the gondolier, a man that stands at the back of the gondola and uses a long rowing oar to move the boat.

The oar isn’t attached to the gondola, it’s used both for power and direction. Gondolas are the traditional Venetian boats that were used in the canals of Venice for hundreds of years.

There used to be about 10,000 but the number has dropped to around 500 today.

How much does a gondola ride cost?

Gondola rides in Venice can be pretty pricey.

We wandered around Venice for a while before deciding to do a gondola ride, we checked prices at different gondola stations and were told that the prices were standardised and would be all the same anywhere in Venice.

A private gondola ride in Venice is 80 EUR for 25 – 30 minutes and 120 EUR for 45 minutes.

Gondolas can hold up to six people. The price is fixed for the boat so the more people you share it with, the cheaper it is. There is no need to book a gondola ride online, you will easily be able to find available gondolas in Venice.

The best place for a gondola ride in Venice

Many people want to do gondola rides close to Piazza San Marco or on the Grand Canal as they think that will have the best views, however in my opinion there is a more tranquil beauty to doing a gondola ride in the quite back canals.

Also if you do a gondola ride close to Piazza San Marco you will have to cruise part of it in the open sea, where it can get a bit choppy due to the waves from all the boats.

We started our gondola ride close to Rialto Bridge and found this to be the perfect starting spot since it allowed us to see some very scenic views (I mean just look at those photos of Rialto Bridge!) while also spending some time in the narrow back canals.

What to expect during a gondola ride

Most gondoliers work with tourists every day and should be able to speak at least a little bit of basic English, maybe some French and German too.

If you ask them they’ll tell you a bit of sightseeing stories of the places you see during your gondola ride.

For example during our gondola ride we cruised past Casanova’s house but we would have never known if our gondolier hadn’t told us.

However don’t expect them to sing, I’ve only seen that happen in movies. You can try asking your gondolier if he will serenade you but realistically, I don’t know if he will.

If there is a specific spot you want to go to it’s best to start your gondola ride from somewhere close to it, so that it’s easy to reach. Just ask your gondolier and he should be able to help.

If you want to go massively off the beaten canals (see what I did there?) there might be an extra cost.

Gondolas are pretty basic boats and don’t have awnings or sun umbrellas, if you’re visiting Italy in summer just bear in mind it can get pretty hot in the Italian sun.

You might want to do your gondola cruise early in the morning or at sunset instead (this is also the best time for photos)!

When you go for a gondola ride in Venice you can expect to spend 25 to 45 minutes on a relaxing cruise, admiring the beauty of the architecture that surrounds you.

Some parts of Venice are more relaxing than others, around the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco it can get quite busy with all the other boats so its up to you whether you want to see the main sights, but risk a bit of boat traffic, or if you’d rather be away from the chaos in smaller side canals.

Some of the smaller canals don’t even have pedestrian sidewalks so doing a gondola cruise is the only way to reach them.

Where to stay in Venice

Being the famous tourist destination it is, accommodation in Venice can get very expensive. On my last trip to Venice I stayed at Hotel alle Guglie , which was just inside Venice city, but just outside the main tourist area.

It’s a short 15-minute walk away from Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco. Being marginally outside meant it was slightly cheaper than the average and a great value for money.

Should you do a gondola ride in Venice?

Personally, I think you should do a gondola ride in Venice.

Yes it’s an extremely touristy attraction and yes it’s very expensive, but it’s also one of the most traditional and unique experiences you can have in Venice, as well as a must on any Italy bucket list or Italy itinerary .

Gondolas allow you to see Venice from a completely different angle; many of the canals we cruised through didn’t even have a pedestrian walking area so you would never be able to visit them on foot.

You’re only in Venice once so I’d aim to make the most of it while you’re there, gondola rides are unique to Venice and you don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime experience.

Gondola rides are also a very fun activity to do in Venice with kids .

Why are gondola rides in Venice so expensive?

Indeed, gondola rides in Venice come with a hefty price tag. This can be attributed to the simple principles of supply and demand. Venice, with its unparalleled charm, attracts millions of visitors each year, many of whom yearn for a gondola experience.

However, the number of working gondolas in Venice is limited to just 260-290, allowing gondoliers to set a high fixed price without experiencing a significant drop in demand.

Are gondoliers taking advantage of tourists? Perhaps. But Venice is known for its high cost of living, and the gondola itself is a substantial investment with hight maintenance costs. So while gondola rides may be expensive, there are underlying factors that contribute to their pricing.

What to Expect on Your Gondola Ride and how to prepare

Although black is the official color of the gondolas in Venice, many are ornately decorated and have comfortable seats and blankets. You can stroll around and look for one that suits your fancy before boarding.

To begin, a gondolier assists you in boarding their gondola. Next, you’re invited to take a seat on a comfortable double-armchair. Occasionally, the gondolier may ask passengers to switch seats for optimal balance.

The tour then commences, taking you on a delightful journey along the canals, around your point of departure.

Typically, a gondola ride in Venice lasts for 40 minutes and concludes at the original starting point. If you have a specific destination in mind, it’s advisable to discuss it with the gondolier beforehand, as there may be an additional fee involved.

The Gondolier

The gondolier will be your guide during the ride, and as such, they can greatly influence your experience. Most gondoliers aren’t just exceptionally skilled rowers but also know Venice exceptionally well.

In fact, most are also happy to give you information and commentary about the fantastic sights in front of you. So, don’t settle for a grumpy gondolier, make sure you get along with them.

Many gondoliers speak English, and perhaps a limited German or French. Their attire typically consists of black pants, a striped shirt, and closed dark shoes. While they often have a banded straw hat, it is not always worn.

Gondoliers stand up to row and use only one oar, as this is the best way to navigate through the narrow canals of Venice.

There probably won’t be songs or serenades

Hollywood movies often paint a picture of a singing gondolier, but in reality this rarely happens. And while some may indeed sing, it is not something to be expected.

In certain instances, however, you may have the option to pay extra for a serenade, or even have a musician join your ride.

Many gondoliers provide informative commentary during the ride, but this is also not mandatory.

You’re in charge of your own sun protection

Gondolas do not have awnings or sun umbrellas, so you’ll be riding in direct sunlight. Remember to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection.

If you visit during the hot summer, consider a ride at sunset or after dark for a cooler, romantic, and stunning experience. Early mornings offer cool temperatures and gentle lighting, making it an ideal time for a ride as well.

Gondola Route Options in Venice

Not all gondolas take the same routes, but your experience can be influenced by where you hop on one. Choose a gondola stop in the area you want to visit.

When y grab one at Rialto Bridge, you’ll be heading for a journey down the iconic, bustling Grand Canal. Seek out a side canal, where water taxis and vaporetti don’t have stands, and you’ll be able to enjoy a tranquil ride off the beaten path.

Instead of opting for a gondola ride on the busy Grand Canal, it is often suggested to explore the tranquil back canals of Venice. By venturing away from the tourist hub and San Marco, you can discover a unique perspective of the city without the congestion of gondolas. Take a short stroll from the main street to find a gondolier and embark on a memorable experience.

Of course, if you want to see specific landmarks such as the Bridge of Sighs, you should take a gondola in the stations near San Marco. Just keep in mind that you will have loads of company.

Many visitors coming to Venice share the desire to take a ride on a gondola under this iconic bridge. Also, several tour guides also bring their numerous groups to those touristy areas to make them board gondolas.

As a result, you may find yourself waiting in a queue for hours before boarding a gondola at Saint Mark’s and Rialto’s. Furthermore, you will then be part of a gondola procession, surrounded by other gondolas in front and behind you, all following the same crowded tour.

For a better experience, board a gondola at a less crowded station. This will provide a more intimate and exclusive atmosphere, avoiding the feeling of being part of a gondola congestion. Additionally, your gondolier will be more energetic and passionate throughout the ride.

Best Time for a Gondola Ride in Venice

The best time for a gondola ride is in the early morning when the sun is mild and the crowds haven’t settled over Venice yet, or around sunset for the most romantic experience.

If you’re visiting in summer try avoiding the harsh afternoon sun as the gondolas don’t have any shade.

What is a Venetian gondola?

A gondola is a traditional Venetian rowing boat, with dimensions that can vary slightly. Typically, it is around 11 meters long, 1.45 meters wide, and less than 1 meter deep. In total, a gondola weighs approximately 600 kg.

Crafted in traditional Venetian dockyards called “squeri,” gondolas take approximately six months to complete. Each gondola is meticulously handmade, composed of 280 individual pieces from eight distinctive wood varieties: oak, fir, cherry, larch, walnut, linden, mahogany, and elm. The final price of a gondola amounts to around 30,000 euros.

A gondola, known for its distinctive asymmetrical shape and flat bottom, is propelled by a skilled gondolier using a long wooden oar. This oar pivots on a forcola, a traditional Venetian oarlock crafted from wood.

Gondola history

The word “gondola” was first used by Doge Vitale Falier in 1093 C.E. It originated from the boat called “scaula” that had been in use since the early 900s.

The original gondola was broader, shorter, and symmetrical compared to today’s version. It had flatter bow and stern, and simple metal blades as front and rear ornaments.

While some gondolas were used for transportation across canals, others were owned by wealthy families to showcase their status.

In the late 1500s, gondola makers started modifying the shape to navigate the growing city’s narrow canals more easily. The new gondolas had longer and thinner hulls, reducing friction and improving maneuverability.

This asymmetrical design gained popularity among Venetians, and by 1600 C.E., there were over 10,000 gondolas in Venice.

Over time, gondolas became symbols of power, and Venetian families adorned them lavishly.

In the 1800s, the gondola’s length reached 11 meters, and its stern and bow were lifted even higher. In the early 20th century, the gondola achieved its final shape with increased asymmetry for better control.

Today, there are only around 260 to 280 gondolas, primarily operated by gondoliers. Private ownership of gondolas is rare.

Is Gondola ride in Venice worth it? The Complete Guide

Venice is a popular Italian destination. It is a city in northeastern Italy that is sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges.

Located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon, Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, architecture, and artwork. The lagoon and a part of the city are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world, and a gondola ride through the canals is often cited as a must-do activity here. 

The city of Venice has been called “La Serenissima”, in reference to its title as one of the “Most Serene Republics”. This is because it was an independent and sovereign state for many centuries, and its history spans over 11 centuries. 

With so much maritime history and the existence of water networks, you must be wondering why the gondola? So in this guide below, we will share everything that you need to know about hiring gondolas in Venice and its heritage. 

History of Venetian Gondola

Venetian Gondolas have existed since the late 11th century. In the beginning, they were used as means of transport only on a series of six islands, that were located at the edge of the Adriatic Sea. 

They became a great way to get around the lagoon’s islands, and today, it is a symbol of the city itself! 

At the height of the Republic of Venice, there were about eight to ten thousand gondolas, but there are only around four hundred in active service today. They are all in use for tourism purposes. So when you hire a gondola, it’s being a part of its history!

Since its early days, the shape of the gondola has changed. And it took about a thousand years for it to evolve to what it is today –  a beautiful, sleek, and cool gondola – painted in black with designs in gold.

And, of course, the gondolier dressed in their recognizable attire! 

About the gondoliers: Guide to Venice gondola ride

The man in a striped sweater and black pants is the gondolier. Gondoliers have been in existence for over 1,000 years. In the past, gondoliers served the aristocracy and were mostly Moorish slaves. 

Licenses are issued to gondoliers by the city of Venice. Most gondoliers descend from a family of gondoliers who are inspired to continue their lineage. 

Gondoliers are always seen dressed in striped clothing, with black pants, and they won’t be operating a gondola without wearing it. They navigate through the floating city like no other – pushing walls, maneuvering smaller canals, under bridges whilst taking you through the nook and cranny of Venice. 

They speak Italian, and some might communicate in English too. It is very rare to see a gondolier offering a guided tour with narration.

Pro tip: When hiring a gondola on your own, always ask or confirm the route from the gondolier. We recommend that you opt for a mix of popular sites and smaller alleyways to explore the city from various perspectives. 

How much is a gondola ride in Venice? Gondola ride venice tickets | Venice gondola ride cost

The cost of a gondola ride in Venice depends on the fact – if you want to enjoy it by yourself and a loved one, or share it with others. 

The standard rate is 80 euros for a 25 to 30 minute gondola ride . At night (after 7:00 pm), however, a gondola ride cost is 100 euros for a private 25 to 30 minutes tour. These rates are fixed, and cannot be negotiated.

This cost is not per person, but for the route/ride. So you can ride a gondola in Venice with a maximum of 5 people for 80 euros. Or if you are a couple, and want to take a private ride it will be 80 euros as well.

If you require additional time on the gondola, you can pay for it in increments of 20 minutes. The charge is €40 and it needs to be confirmed prior to taking the trip. The official prices for gondola rides are posted here . 

Note that you can only pay by cash at the gondola station. You can pay for it once the ride is completed. 

• The cheapest gondola ride in Venice will be a shared ride , done during the daytime.
• The best gondola ride in Venice is to do it privately and in the evening . Sunset is the best time to enjoy all the views and vibes of the Grand Canal.

Some travelers have mentioned that you could get a cheaper ride (for less than €60 for 30 minutes) when it is off-season. Because these prices are officially set, you won’t be able to negotiate this, unless you are offered by the gondolier himself!

• Shared ride with commentary: This is a 35 minute shared gondola tour (5 guests). Live commentary is provided in English and Italian, and many other languages via a mobile app. Check availability here

We recommend doing this activity for your one day in Venice itinerary . You will surely love and appreciate the city’s network of canals and admire its architecture and centuries-old tradition. 

Where are the gondola rides in Venice? Gondola stations

There are multiple areas including gondola stations from where you can hire one. When you book tickets online, you will get the starting point of the gondola tour. 

Keep in mind if you are choosing a tour with commentary, the meeting point is essential to contact the guide. 

Campo San Luca is a popular station to get on a private gondola ride. And this is where we started ours. You can book this ride here . 

Another option is to hire one from the Bauer gondola station (located in front of Hotel Bauer and close to Saint Mark’s Square). This is a popular starting point, you can reserve it here online .

Other than the main stations, there are a few smaller, but popular spots where gondoliers will be hanging out and looking for guests. You can find them near bridges, canal side or by the pier. 

There are gondoliers by the Gritti Palace (hotel) – Santa Maria del Giglio . Campo SM Formosa , located in the district of Castello (northeast part of St. Mark’s Square) also has Gondolas waiting for you to hire. 

You can also take a Gondola ride from the Ponte de Canonica , located just behind the Doge’s Palace. 

You can easily find a gondola for hire, when in Venice. They do not have to be reserved ahead of time. Simply look for signs, confirm the price, the route that you are interested in, and the number of people, and pick one to start the ride. 

Remember to carry cash and pay the gondolier once the ride/route is done. The price of the gondola is for the ride, not per person. So if you are a family of 4, the price per person is cheaper, versus a couple or single on a 30 minute ride. 

Gondola Ride in Venice: What to expect?

A gondola ride is a luxurious activity to do in Venice. Vintage style cushioned seats, with ornate designs, and meticulous gondoliers – maneuvering through the small alleys, ducking down when approaching a bridge, or pushing the walls to make a turn to get you going – all this sounds like royalty, isn’t it? And it is how we felt.

As soon as you pick a gondola you like, the gondolier will let you in gracefully and take you through the Venetian waters. 

Just like you, we were debating if we should get a gondola ride for Salil and me.

We took a Vaporetto to get to the Grand Canal from the neighborhood of Maestre, and I was hooked. I kept looking outside, wanting to photograph the beautiful buildings and gondolas. 

So we just booked a private ride for ourselves in the afternoon. And I am glad we did! 

Our private tour lasted 35 minutes, and I also decided to do a photo shoot as I wanted the trip to be memorable. We had ample time for photos as well as to enjoy the ride. When you are on a short trip to Venice, hopping on a gondola ride will allow you to discover more districts.

After having experienced a private tour, we can share that there is no way to see many amazing parts of Venice without this gondola ride. It was actually very beautiful, and with the lovely breeze blowing…ahh…it was priceless!

Alternatives to Venice gondola rides

When we asked our followers on Instagram if they did a gondola ride, many said they didn’t opt for one, mainly due to money/budget (not enough time being the second reason). 

A private gondola ride is definitely fancy, luxurious, and a memorable experience. But for whatever reason you feel that it is not for you (budget constraints, accessibility issues, etc.), then we recommend looking at the alternatives below. 

We think that experiencing Venice through its network of waterways is a great way to explore the city, but of course, it is not the only way. 

First up, if cost is an issue, opt for a shared ride . You can also book it as a tour with a commentary online (on GetYourGuide) and save money when they run their specials. 

Secondly, other than traditional gondolas, there are ferries, small boats, water taxis, and buses (Vaporetto) that will allow you to see Venice from the waters. 

A water bus or Vaporetto is a nice way to enjoy the Grand Canal as you navigate to/from various districts in Venice. A Vaporetto will be cheap (2.50 euros, or less with a savings pass), plus it is very accessible (strollers, big bags, etc). 

When visiting Venetian Islands like Burano or Murano, you will be using a Vaporetto. You can also book a tour to see these islands , and that will give you room to enjoy your own space on the Vaporetto (when booked as a small group tour, as they won’t be overcrowded). 

Burano, Murano, and Torcello can be visited as day trips from Venice. 

If you are flying into Venice, then you can also use a water taxi to get to Grand Canal from Marco Polo Airport. 

There are ferry terminals located near St Mark’s Square or San Marco Piazza (by the promenade) and you can ride on it to get a great view of the Grand Canal.

Although in a group, it may not be as romantic or intimate, it will still give you an opportunity to explore Venice from the waters – which is what you MUST do!

Gondola rates are fixed. At the time of writing (2022), it is 80 euros for 30 minutes. This cost is not per person, but for the route/ride. So you can ride a gondola in Venice with a maximum of 5 people for 80 euros. If you are a couple, (private ride) it will be 80 euros as well. Gondola rides cost higher in the evening or after sunset. 

No. You do not need to make reservations online. You will find plenty of gondoliers at various stations, or by bridges waiting to be hired. Only remember that their rates are fixed unless they offer you something fantastic. Carry cash, and pay the gondolier once the route is completed. 

We liked both Gondola Bauer and Campo San Luca for gondola hire. But anywhere is fine really, and rates are fixed for the duration! 

Typically, hours are from 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM during the day. But it is best after 07:00 pm (100 euros per ride 30 minutes) for epic sunset views.

Riding a gondola in Venice is absolutely worth it! 

Is it touristy? Yes, it is! Probably every travel guidebook will say that. But everything in Venice is touristy, you know…. the city gets about 5 million visitors per year.

Although it’s pricey, it’s one of the things that Venice is known for. These gondolas have existed since the 11th century, and they allow you to see many amazing parts of Venice that aren’t possible without navigating through the waterways. 

A gondola ride will allow you to see and appreciate the city’s canals, and how it has survived and existed for centuries. 

Enjoying a gondola ride is quintessentially Venetian. We like to experience ‘things’ that a destination is known for, and so we couldn’t skip a gondola ride. 

When we took the private ride, it felt wonderful soaking in every inch of Venice from the waters. Riding the gondola will also give you a different angle from the water and you get a much better view of many structures. Plus it’s great for pictures – what’s not to like?

Trust us, there’s no better way to see this magical place than by a gondola! You can use a water taxi and Vaporetto (public water bus) to experience a ride on the Grand Canal, but the traditional Venetian gondola ride is hard to beat!

The price for a gondola ride is not per person but per boat

First thing you have to consider is that the price for a gondola ride is not per person but per boat .

If you are traveling with your family or with a group of people , you could decide to share the costs among the participants, so that this experience will be a perfect private gondola ride .

Take note that each gondola takes up to 5 people plus the gondolier. Children up to 1 year are not counted, since they can travel in parent's lap.

Rarely, gondoliers might ask to take just 4 people just to better balance the weigh t on the gondola. Safety comes first than the magic of the experience. We know you agree.

The average duration of a Venice gondola tour

Gondola tours usually last 30 minutes . However, you could decide to book a longer tour, lasting 45 minutes or even 1 hour .

It is definitely up to you and to the itinerary you decide to take.

Gondola ride cost: the difference between day and night

As we told you, now gondola ride rates are fixed by the local Municipality .

Basically, if you decide to go on a gondola ride from 9 AM to 7 PM it will cost 80 euro per gondola .

If you decide to go during the evening or at night, from 7 PM to 3 AM , the rate increases: from 100 euro per gondola .

Prices include the experience for one gondola ride of 30 minutes of duration and costs can be shared by up to 5 people.

Duration may change according to unpredictable conditions , like weather, traffic or high tide.

Booking tips: how to book your Venetian gondola ride

You could decide to book a gondola tour directly on the spot (we will tell you where later in the article), but in 2023 it is definitely possible to book your gondola ride online .

You can search the net verifying the websites of the gondoliers and selecting the itinerary of your choice.

You may find that many tours are less expensive than what we told you and prices that are really affordable (35/30 euro per person more or less). If you find this kind of price is just because the tour is not a private gondola ride, but a shared excursion .

It does not have to be necessarily a problem: you just have to consider that your gondola ride will be done together with passengers you may not know .

How to Take a Traghetto (Cheapest Gondola in Venice!)

Looking for a fun and affordable way to cross the Grand Canal in Venice? Try a traghetto (gondola parada)!

For just 2 Euro–yes, you read that right–you can cross Venice’s Grand Canal on a brief but scenic gondola ride.

It’s a little quirky, a lot of fun, and well worth seeking out during your trip to Venice.

Here’s how to take a 2 Euro gondola ride across the Grand Canal!

What is a traghetto in Venice?

Traghetti are essentially the public transportation version of a gondola, a throwback to earlier decades (and centuries) when everyday Venetians needed a simple way to cross the Grand Canal.

Unlike the smaller, more romantic gondolas that you can hire for a ride, a traghetto (also called a gondola parada) holds up to 10 people and is piloted by 2 gondoliers, not one.

Only 4 bridges (Scalzi, Accademia, Costituzione, and Rialto) criss-cross the beautiful Grand Canal, so it’s safe to say there has long been a market for more ways to cross!

While today Venice has plenty of vaporettos serving this purpose, they’re more expensive, more cumbersome, and–let’s be real–less fun than hopping in a traditional gondola traghetto.

How to Ride a Traghetto in Venice

Step 1: find a traghetto..

Honestly, the trickiest part about riding a traghetto gondola in Venice is finding one!

There are technically still 7 traghetto routes active in Venice (down from 30+ once upon a time), but their hours can be fickle and inconsistent.

This article details where you can find them (in theory), and searching “Venice traghetto” on Google maps also pulls up the most popular launches .

However, the best way to find one is simply to keep an eye out as you wander around in the general areas where the stations are located.

You can often spot signs on buildings pointing to their launch docks, and if the traghetto ferry is open at that point, you’ll probably see a sandwich board with prices on it at the launch.

Otherwise, just peek across the Grand Canal–since traghetto routes are so short, you should be able to spot the gondola within a few minutes if it’s active!

We’ve ridden in traghetti leaving from both San Tomà and Dogana and loved both, though the views from Dogana were particularly fantastic!

Both times, we simply happened to be walking by when the traghetto was open and decided to jump on the opportunity to go for a ride.

Step 2: Board carefully.

When the traghetto pulls up to the dock, the gondolier will give you a hand into the traghetto.

While Venetians typically stand on these rides, I honestly can’t imagine doing so!

The Grand Canal is a busy place, especially in the middle of the day, and while it wasn’t particularly dramatic, I caught myself holding onto my seat a couple of times when sitting on the side.

The gondoliers will likely try to balance the weight in the traghetto, so follow their lead on where to sit or stand.

Step 3: Pay your fare (in coins).

Riding a traghetto in Venice is a cash-only experience.

Ideally, you’ll have the 2 Euro per person in exact change, but even if you don’t pay in coins if possible.

And don’t get too excited by the 0.70 Euro price listed–that’s only for locals.

Step 4: Enjoy the views!

Once you board and pay up, it’s time to enjoy the views!

A traghetto gondola ride only lasts a couple of minutes, so if you want to get photos from the middle of the Grand Canal, be prepared and have your camera/phone ready.

It’s lots of fun, though, and depending on which traghetto you ride, you’ll be able to spot one of several Venetian landmarks!

Step 5: Explore your next sestiere in Venice.

Once you wrap up your traghetto ride, you’ll be in a whole new area of Venice.

In other words, it’s the perfect opportunity to kick off a nice, meandering wander through one of the most beautiful cities in Europe (or the world, for that matter).

If you want a direction, try seeing if any of Venice’s best hidden gems are nearby!

… Or, if what you really want is to be back where you were a minute ago, you can always get back in line (if there is one) and cough up another couple of Euro to take the traghetto back to the other side of the Grand Canal.

Is it Worth Paying For a “Real” Gondola Ride?

After riding in a gondola traghetto-style, you may be wondering if paying 80 Euro (per boat, not per person, but still) can possibly be worth it.

The answer is simple: it depends.

We go into much more detail on this in our guide to gondola rides in Venice , but essentially, the experience is different enough (possibly private, much longer, smaller canals) that we certainly see the appeal of doing both.

We’ve ridden in both traditional gondolas and in traghetti, and we expect to enjoy both again in the future!

That being said, a traditional gondola ride–while fun–will not make or break your trip to Venice, and enjoying a traghetto is a fantastic way to stretch your budget while still getting a taste of riding in a small boat on the Grand Canal.

I have been to Venice 6 times over the past fifty years and rising in the gondola on two of the most recent trips. Both times were awesome and worth every penny. I have had the opportunity to ride Venetian gondolas, but I couldn’t do it outside the realm of Venice!

Napa Gondola: The Next Best Thing to Venice

Downtown Napa recently hosted Julie and me for a visit. We knew about the region’s reputation for delicious, full-bodied wines. However, we didn’t realize that Downtown Napa offers an unexpected adventure that transports you to Venice. We enjoyed our Napa gondola experience so much we want to share it with you.

A Brief History of Gondolas in Napa

Interestingly, an individual with an Irish name introduced the Italian experience to Downtown Napa. Sean O’Malley started as an employee in Oakland for the prior operator, Gondola Servizio, in 2018 as a fun job. 

O’Malley says, “The City of Napa had approached Gondola Servizio to expand from Oakland to the Downtown Napa Dock. Living in Napa, it was easy for me to manage the gondola business and be a gondolier. I had fallen in love with everything about the business and offered to purchase it in 2019.” With that, Napa Valley Gondola was born. 

Sharing a Unique Passion in California’s Renowned Wine Country

Some guests may wonder if they sampled too many wines when they gaze into the Napa River and spot a long, narrow boat maneuvered by an oarsman in a striped shirt and a straw hat with a ribbon. O’Malley says, “A typical reaction we get from most people is amazement. It is not often you see a Venetian gondola outside of Venice.”

Sharing his passion for gondolas with travelers is only part of O’Malley’s mission. He says, “What I really love most about this business is the joy the cruise brings to the passengers. It is always a delight when someone discovers the beauty of the gondolas as well as the Napa River.”

Are the Napa Gondolas the Real Thing?

O'Malley says, "I have a little anecdote that I like to tell people that the gondoliers are the most photographed people in Napa, but truly the stars of the show are the gondolas." For those who question the authenticity of the Napa boats, O'Malley elaborates, "The gondolas were hand-built in Venice, Italy, and were imported to California. They're made out of seven types of wood and were custom-made for us in Napa."

Each gondola is 36 feet long and contains unique ornate decorations. You may notice that the slender boats tilt to one side. The asymmetrical design is intentional, counterbalancing the gondolier's weight, which stands to one side.

How Does Napa Compare to Venice?

O'Malley says, "The bonus about using gondolas in the Napa River is that conditions are very similar to what you find in Venice, Italy." While conditions may be similar, the scenery is a bit different. Venice buildings line the canal, nearly appearing to float. Plus, many gondolas regularly fill the iconic waterways.

Napa has more ground between the waterway and its quaint downtown area. Since Napa Valley Gondola currently has three gondolas, the Napa River will be less crowded than Venice. O'Malley states, "The major difference between what we do here in Napa compared to Venice is we offer only private cruises." While Venice offers a historic setting, Napa delivers a more relaxed experience with its charm, private cruises, and open waters.

What Can You Expect on Your Cruise?

O'Malley says, "We offer a traditional cruise experience much like you would find in Venice. It consists of a 55-minute cruise with the gondolier. Now, every gondolier is different. We all have different ways of providing entertainment to the customers - so every cruise is unique." 

For travelers who want a scenic wine-tasting experience, Napa Valley Gondola offers a "Wine-makers Cruise" with wines from Ward Four Wines . Justin Trabue founded the winery and prides herself on making wine accessible to Black communities, supporting small businesses, and sourcing from vineyards with sustainability efforts.

How Many People Can Ride in the Gondola?

While a gondola cruise is perfect for a romantic date, the experience is also fun for groups or families. O'Malley says, "We have a good mix between couples and groups. The gondolas can hold up to six people, so it allows for families or friends to all go on the gondola at one time. We also have three gondolas, which gives us the capacity to take out groups of 18."

How Long is the Napa Valley Gondola Cruise Season?

Napa Valley Gondola tries to offer cruises year-round. Of course, the weather ultimately dictates the availability. The primary gondola cruise season in Downtown Napa runs from April through December.

Our Thoughts

Julie and I enjoyed exploring the famous wine region. While there are many things to do in Downtown Napa , including unique wine tastings, boutique shops, and art galleries, we most enjoyed the Napa Valley Gondola and Napa Valley Wine Train experiences. Each is so different and unexpected.

First, the partnership between Napa Valley Gondola and Ward Four Wines is a tremendous fit. You can take pride in supporting small businesses that want to provide everyone with access to unique experiences.

The gondola cruise is perfect for a date but is also fun for a family or group. It is a wonderful way to experience the region's charm and romance. The relaxing ride induces a sense of calm as you gently glide along the Napa Valley River.

Keep your eyes open for wildlife. Guests regularly see birds, foxes, beavers, or river otters. Before our cruise, we spotted a beaver. We encountered green herons, ducks, geese, and mergansers during our ride. 

Beyond the wildlife, we could not help but admire the craftsmanship of the gondola itself. You can see the level of detail that goes into each vessel between the different types of wood and the unique metal figures. The peaceful ride delivers a surreal experience, the next best thing to Venice.

How did I avoid paying Venice’s new ‘entrance fee’? By joining the local Venezia FC fans

Fans heading to the waterside stadium don’t have to pay the €5 tourist fee. And with the team fighting for promotion to Serie A, the atmosphere at the last home game of the season is electric

S unday day-trippers to Venice flashing their €5 entry ticket QR code to get through the turnstiles at the city’s main access points look bemused when football supporters simply show their match tickets instead. Attending a sporting event just happens to be one of the exemptions in the opaque regulations behind what locals see as an attempt to turn their town into a living museum .

Anyone who joins the crowds of football fans making their way through the streets to the Sant’Elena neighbourhood, in the east of the city just beyond the Biennale Gardens, will discover that this city is a long way from being a museum, and that buying a ticket to watch Venezia FC affords the opportunity to enjoy a slice of local life. Where else in the world can you arrive at a football stadium by vaporetto (waterbus)? It costs just €15 to sit up in the Curva Sud stand surrounded by friendly cheering, singing Venetians, and watch a match against the backdrop of Venice’s lagoon.

For the last home game of the season, against lowly Feralpisalò from Lombardy, I jump on the vaporetto outside Venice Santa Lucia station headed for the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo . Built in 1910, it is Italy’s second-oldest football ground, with a capacity of just 11,500. There are always plans afoot to build a modern stadium on the mainland, but for now it remains the unique venue where all of Venice – kids, mums and dads, bar staff, butchers, bank clerks and gondoliers – forget about the daily invasion of tourists and come together to support the local team. And that team is verging on promotion to the giddy heights of Serie A under American owners who have realised the global potential of a Venice football team.

Sitting next to me on the vaporetto, wearing the team’s distinctive green, orange and black, are local builder Thomas Blascovich and his son Nicolas. “Though I was born on the mainland, my parents come from Venice itself and I attended matches with my papà from the age of seven,” says Thomas. “I consider myself Venetian even though I live on the terraferma . And, though it may sound strange, the moment the bus crosses the Ponte della Libertà and I get on the vaporetto, well, I feel I am at home again.”

With tickets to the match almost sold out, I grab a seat early, high up in the rickety Curva Sud, home of the most passionate home supporters. Here I meet Nicholas Pettenello, an 18-year-old Venetian student. “All my friends at school support the team and it is a ritual for us to meet up and see the match on Sundays,” he says. “It is a great experience, win, lose or draw, with everyone singing and cheering for 90 minutes. It’s one of those rare moments when we are all Venetians together, standing united, forgetting all the tourists that take over the town.”

Match days always follow the same pattern, he says. “We meet at Sant’Elena for a beer and a panino at Vincent Bar en route to the stadium, and after the game we head for Via Garibaldi in the Castello district, where osterie like Strani and Alle Colonnette are favourites among supporters, and then on to Piazza San Marco. Pretty much a perfect day for a Venetian, so long as we win.”

One person I do not expect to see in the Curva is Duncan Niederauer , Venezia FC’s American owner and former CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. But there he is, proudly wearing his team’s shirt. He is welcomed like a saviour by the tifosi , and stays for the raucous celebrations after Venezia win 2-1. It is certainly not the kind of welcome the Glazers could expect if they ventured into the stands at Manchester United.

The 93rd-minute winning goal gives Venezia an outside chance of automatic promotion to Serie A on the last day of the season on Friday night. (The nail-biting playoffs are a more likely outcome, though, and may go on until 2 June.) After the match, I walk with the singing supporters to Via Garibaldi, where for once it is the cruise ship groups who look shocked as we cram over bridges into narrow streets.

In Trattoria alla Rivetta , a famed hangout for gondoliers near St Mark’s, Alvise d’Este, 31, is on a break from taking tourists along the Grand Canal. “Whenever I can get off work on a Sunday, I will be with my friends in the Curva Sud. Today I was working, but I was getting phone notifications from the game on my gondola.”

Back home, I have a final celebratory spritz al bitter with Lorenzo Pedrocco, a sprightly 88-year-old born close to Stadio Penzo and one of the few remaining Venetians who was there when the team famously won the Coppa Italia (Italian cup final) in 1941. “Sadly I cannot get to see matches any more,” he says. “But I am as proud of our team, of being a Venetian, so I was following the match today as always.”

If Venezia do return to Serie A, glamorous teams such as Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan will be making the boat trip to the creaking Stadio Penzo next season. And tourists will see Piazza San Marco invaded by joyous tifosi belting out their favourite anthems in Venetian dialect, and traffic on the Grand Canal disrupted not by a victory parade atop a bus, but in a flotilla of gondolas.

Of course, there is always a big if with playoff matches, but even another season in Serie B will give all Venetians, those living in the historic centre and the diaspora on the mainland, the chance to celebrate their venezianità in their beloved island stadium.
