At peak times, when every bed is occupied, the transports Ventura in its 1.539 cabins a maximum of 3.574 passengers. Up to 1.226 crew members take care of the guests. Many of these crew members never see the passengers.

Ventura in St. John's / Antigua

This also generally applies to the bridge. However, those guests who book a guided tour called the “Behind the Scenes Tour” have the pleasure of doing the Master of the Ship , Captain Simon Terry , and his deputy, Deputy Capt. Derek Gray to get to know. Never before has a captain taken so much time for his guests during a tour of the bridge area during our voyages. Often enough the work was delegated to the Staff Captain or lower ranks. While the Deputy Captain on the mooring deck informed the guests of the ship's command about the processes, the captain insisted on informing the bridge visitors personally and in detail about what was happening on the bridge and the interaction of the systems. It was extremely informative and also had style.

Ventura in Sint Maarten - The bridge

There are enough crew members with constant guest contact. On the one hand, there are the stateroom attendants. They are responsible for the guest cabins and work very carefully twice a day. And if the guests arrive shortly before 23pm due to a missed flight, as in our case, they can still count on a good-humored cabin steward when they move into the deluxe balcony cabin. - The waiter in the buffet restaurant Waterside and The Beach House are mainly busy with serving and cleaning the tables. This work is done quickly and properly and there is usually still time for a smile and a few friendly words.

Ventura - service staff in front of a restaurant with Barbara Baber

The waiters in the service restaurants are always friendly and always present. In the course of our evening, time-independent "Freedom Dining" sessions, we were served by several service teams. Every time the restaurant was very busy, a very good job was done.

Ventura - waiter at the Tazzine Bar

The Guest Relations staff have intensive guest contact. They take care of the guests with competence and an angelic patience.

Ventura - reception

Our special thanks and great praise go to our (press) supervisor Barbara Baber. She was at our side during our stay on board with words and deeds. We also think of the dance instructor couple Ian & Penny or the friendly staff in the on-board shops. Many other crew members also deserved mention. Unfortunately, there is not enough space for this.

The Chaotic Scot - SCOTTISH TRAVEL BLOG PACKED WITH FUN, FOOD & INSPIRATION

My First Time Guide to the P&O Ventura

P&O Ventura

I recently found out with only a week’s notice that I would be escaping Scotland’s refreshing, sub-zero temperatures to embark on a 2 week Eastern Caribbean adventure on-board the P&O Ventura.

As a Ventura virgin, who generally adopts a more ‘backpacker’ approach to travel, I found myself frantically pestering my good friend Google on all the necessary need-to-knows about P&O’s style of cruising. I was on a mini-mission to ensure that myself, my purse and my suitcase were suitably prepped for my journey aboard this unfamiliar vessel.

That said, one often learns in the school of travel that there is only so much which can be ascertained prior to the experience itself; much of what you need to know will be revealed along the way. Unless, that is, amidst the multiple online sources and infinitely long forum posts, lies a one-stop-info-shop straight from a former first timer… like me!

So I give you – the insider’s info, the desirable details, my top tips for holidaying on the Ventura.

What to Pack

Clothes for the daytime are easy peasy – pack exactly as you would for a normal beach holiday. For my 2 week trip I packed a few sundresses, 2 bikinis, plus shorts and t-shirts for the days we ventured into the rainforest. Most of your daytimes will be spent exploring the destinations so duplicated outfits are not a worry, you’ll be lucky if the same people see you twice!

In the evenings, which are spent on-board, the dress code is ‘smart casual’ . This applies to both the waited and buffet restaurants. While this has to be slightly more formal than your beachy daywear, it is by no means pretentious. Men are asked however, to wear trousers as opposed to shorts.

During our sail, there were 4 optional black tie evenings (these coincided with the days we spent ‘At Sea’). A suit and shirt for men, and cocktail dresses or ball gowns for women.

Now ladies, this doesn’t mean you have to rush out to invest in an expensive dress (unless you want to of course!) – I saw women in catsuits, maxi dresses and dresses which had most likely been worn previously to a wedding or special occasion.

I’m not overly glamorous by any means so didn’t purchase anything new, and I never felt underdressed.

Also, if you don’t feel like indulging in the black tie festivities at all, just head to the buffet restaurant where you can abide by the standard evening dress code.

One of my dresses, as previously worn to a friend’s wedding this year

You DON’T need to pack a hairdryer or a beach towel if you don’t want to, you’ll find both waiting for you in your cabin. For anything you’ve forgotten or need to replenish, there are a selection of shops on-board which sell toiletries, various essential items, clothes, make-up, you name it! Also, the plug sockets in the cabin are for British adaptors , HOORAY! (I always forget travel adaptors).

What’s Included

Budgeting is naturally at the forefront of people’s minds before setting off on holiday. The beauty of cruising is that all food is included and in abundance! Food is available almost 24 hours a day; Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner and Late Snacks from 9.30pm – 6am.

Delicious Dishes from the Bay Tree Restaurant

Pizzas can be made to order from the Frankie’s Grill & Pizza during the day by the poolside. The same applies to fast food items such as burgers, hot dogs and fish goutons from the Poolside Grill on the deck.

Complimentary tea and coffee is available all day from the Waterside buffet restaurant, or from the comfort of your own cabin.

Glasses of water are available at no extra charge all day from the buffet restaurant and poolside bars, and also during meal times. Bottled water incurs a charge.

Optional Extras

Should your inner-consumer be craving some spending therapy, there are multiple means of treating yourself.

  • Dine in a choice of 3 specialist restaurants which offer celebrity-chef-inspired set menus and multiple course taster menus from £30pp.
  • Opt for an extra special dish on one of the standard meal menus for a supplementary charge. The ‘Cook your own Beef Fillet on a Lava plate’ for an extra £6.50 was money well spent!

Chef Kay likes hers RARE.

  • Swap machine coffee for a barista coffee courtesy of Costa (prices similar to at home).
  • Indulge in a relaxing spa treatment. I found the single treatment prices pretty exorbitant, however there are specials and spa packages advertised in your daily Horizon cruise-paper which feature far more attractive prices.
  • Book a shore excursion for your next destination (I did this by myself when I arrived at the port or online to save money however. You pay for the convenience and agent advice on-board).
  • Cut your calorie count with a fitness class at the gym, priced at £5.80 (there are some free classes too though!).
  • Purchase a photograph as a souvenir. The on-board photographers are always around, paparazzi-style to document your trip. I’m rather camera shy unless I’m under the influence so frequently fled the scene! ha ha.

The ship’s central hub – The Atrium

Drink Prices and Tabs

I found the drink prices to be surprisingly reasonable considering the captive position you’re in, being out at sea and all!

Sample drinks menus can be viewed here and are not dissimilar to pub prices in the UK.

There are also multiple purchase specials available for stocking up the fridge in your cabin, plus daily ‘Sail Away Cocktail Specials’ for £3.95 and bottled beers for £3 in the dinner buffet restaurant.

Berry Nice!

Absolutely everything purchasable on-board is paid for through your cruise card and accumulated on a tab. Tabs usually strike me as a potentially dangerous system, one which often results in the kind of surprise you don’t want. Luckily, your bill can be viewed at any time through the television in your cabin so that you can monitor your expenditure as you go. Simples! The final balance will be automatically deducted from the card which you registered before embarking the ship.

An automatic tip of £3.50 per passenger per day is added to your on-board tab, and can be viewed on your bill as a total amount for the trip from the moment you arrive on the ship (again this prevents any surprises or expectations at the end of your trip). This is distributed between all the front-line staff who serve you personally and also for people behind the scenes who you don’t see. This can be removed or reduced by Reception upon request but I certainly didn’t grudge it. You can also tip service staff directly if you wish, but this is not compulsory. We left a nice tip at the end for our lovely Cabin Steward called Nevis for doing such a good job and for his ever friendly demeanour.

My beloved balcony cabin before the bed was split in to 2 singles (I was travelling with a friend!)

WiFi is available throughout the ship, but being satellite operated it’s certainly not free! It is charged at 50p per minute or for more excessive users (like myself) there are packages – £35 for 110 minutes or £62.50 for 250 minutes. You are warned that the internet speed is temperamental but I found it perfectly reasonable considering we were out at sea. To save your minutes I would recommend writing any emails or Facebook posts etc. before you log on, then just copying and pasting.

If you can live without WiFi until you’re on dry land, there is every chance you will find it nearby for free. On the itinerary I travelled on there was free wifi in the majority of the ports. The trick is to use it first thing in the morning when you arrive – EVERYONE uses it before they board the ship again in the evening and it slows down the connection speed. Mornings also suited the time difference between the Caribbean and UK, maximising the number of jealousy induced, freezing Facebookers I exposed my holiday snaps too. Mwuhahahaha!

Anything Else?

  • To keep you in the loop and to allow you to plan your time, ‘The Horizon’ cruise-paper is delivered to your cabin in the evening for the following day. It’s your guide to all the ship’s entertainment, nightly dress code, buffet dinner theme and will also provide you with port information, general cruise tips and any important announcements. Try to carry it in your bag so that you always have the entertainment schedule to hand and don’t miss any events which tickle your pickle.
  • I’m the Queen of Croissants and after observing the breakfast situation throughout the trip I realised that these wee pastry delights are hot in demand and snapped up very quickly! If you’re opting for a lie-in you’ll likely have to settle for a roll. TRAGEDY!
  • Cruises traditionally targeted and attracted an exclusively older audience, and although the majority of passengers on the Ventura did fall in to this category, there were a number of young families on-board. Nearly all evenings are spent on-board the ship, so if you’re looking for hip hop happening night life and lots of current music then this likely isn’t the holiday for you. I did thoroughly enjoy the shows in the Arena Theatre which featured some super talented singers and dancers, and there were various live music acts and comedians too to keep you entertained. There wasn’t really a late night drinking establishment which I considered worthy of staying up for, so more than anything I saw this cruise as an opportunity to recharge my batteries, get some extra beauty sleep and to relax in my cabin or on my balcony.

Have you been on a cruise before? What are your top tips?

Another great blog Bab. Very useful to those like myself who haven’t had the opportunity to have been on a cruise. Very intuitive pal x

Thanks very much Amie 🙂 You should look in to doing a cruise yourself.

Wow your blog is fantastic. Having been on several cruises you’ve absolutely nailed all the info anyone could possibly want. Only wish this had been available before we went on our first cruise in 1997 on Oriana. Since 2009 we have done 9 cruises and look forward to our 10th in September on Arcadia visiting America and Canada, although we may sneak a short one in before that. Well done Kay for preparing the blog x

Thanks very much Kathy, I’m glad you liked it. I just tried to muster up all the things I would’ve liked to have known prior to the trip.

That’s awesome how many cruises you’ve been on. Any favourite itineraries or ships? I would love to sail the Norwegian Fjords, it’s on the list!

You should have got a croissant from room service, breakfast in bed, lovely! Free too. Great blog post, really enjoyed it, I’m off on my fourth cruise on Friday (hoping the seas aren’t too rough!) Loved your formal night dress too.

Aaaaaw, now you tell me Caroline! Ha ha. I wasn’t actually sure how the room service worked. There were a couple of occasions, after too many cocktails the night before, that this would have been much appreciated.

Which cruise are you off on you lucky thing?

Thank you, I forgot all about that dress until I raided my wardrobe prior to the trip 🙂

Ventura is a very easy going first cruise ship. Well it was ours anyway,

I totally agree Julie, it’s definitely a good place to start.

I had been on a Thomson cruise years ago when I used to work in travel. It was great but the standard of the ship doesn’t come close to that of the Ventura.

ventura cruise ship captain

Oh how I wish I had seen this before I went on the Ventura in dec … However I stress everything this lady said is FACT… One point to remember your case will depart from u at the airport in uk u won’t see it until u get on ship … It could take up to 4 to 6 hours before u get it delivered to your cabin … Pack a clean shirt/tshirts etc in you hand luggage just in case you luggage is slightly delayed … Other than that lie back and enjoy …

Thanks Tracy!

That’s actually a really good tip, I’ll add it on to the wee bit at the end 🙂

ventura cruise ship captain

Fab read I am doing this same cruise in December so the tips are invaluable – thank you

Cheers Andrea, glad they’ve been of use to you.

Roll on December and hope you have a fab time 🙂

Great blog post! We’re off to the Caribbean on Ventura on Valentine’s day. My husband is dying to know which restaurant you can get the steak on a lava rock in, so if you can let me know I’d be very grateful 🙂

Aaaaw, that’s so romantic. It’s the Beach House restaurant which does the steak. Definitely go ands dine there. We didn’t discover it until later in the cruise so went several times when we did!

Have a great time 🙂

ventura cruise ship captain

As a long standing cruiser, have your breakfast delivered with as many croissants as you want by simply putting your order on your outside door handle before going to bed. The balcony is ideal for eating breakfast and so much less hassle than the self service buffets. If you want a fry up, pop up to the buffet, get it and bring it back to your cabin to enjoy.

Thanks for the great tips Margaret, I will add them to the end of my post. Breakfast was very busy on some mornings so your balcony would be a lovely escapism. Plus I wouldn’t have had to miss out on my beloved croissants!

Happy future cruising to you! 🙂

Well hello, impressive write up! How are you and the boyfriend who’s just a friend, and the couple who were brother and sister? LOL Like you we had a fab cruise on Ventura. Px

Thanks very much Pauline! Oooooh, I suspect you’re a wee onboard spy? Did we come across you on the ship with our ‘Just Friends’ sign? ha ha. We had such a good time, it’s been difficult aclimatising back to Scottish temperatures!

ventura cruise ship captain

I have just returned from 2 weeks around the Caribbean on Ventura and this was my third trip on this ship and would agree with all said on the blog.I did however pay £75 for the behind experience tour which took you to the medical facility, kitchens, veg and meat stores, engine room, theatre, recycling facility and on the bridge with the Captain Paul Brown, although expensive this tour takes place on a sea day and lasts for about 4 hours whith breaks for tea and cakes and finish with champagne with the Captain and for me one of the highlights of the cruise. We enjoyed this cruise so much we have already booked for next year, same ship, weeks and cabin.

You are a Ventura super fan aren’t ya?

That does sound like a cool way to spend your day at sea, having a wee nosey behind the scenes then enjoying a cheeky glass of bubbly with the captain.

Glad you’ve got another trip to look forward to 🙂

ventura cruise ship captain

many thanks for your blog comments, we leave this week for the ventura from Bardados. Ian and Elaine

Thanks Ian and Elaine. I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year since I was on the Ventura – time flies!

Have a fantastic trip, I’m so jealous 🙂

ventura cruise ship captain

Hello – I enjoyed your write up, thanks for the info and top tips from all writers. We too are going on the Ventura on Valentines day! Husband dislikes packing , so I have to suggest items for him. Besides a Dinner suit for formal nights, should he take another jacket? Also I’d heard there are themed/costumed nights? Any other tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi Christine! I’m glad you found the tips useful 🙂

Aw, what a great way to spend Valentines – how romantic!

Are you going to the Caribbean on the Ventura? If so, I don’t think your husband would need another jacket, unless he would normally wear one to dinner at home. There was a tropical themed night, so my friend just bought a daft hawaiian looking shirt on one of the islands. I think there was a 60/70s night too, but this might change every year. It’s optional anyway, and you’ll know from the first day you’re on the ship so can easily buy something.

Have a fantastic time – I’m so jealous!

ventura cruise ship captain

Hi Christine, it’s our first time on board a cruise ship and Ventura was our choice to start our (hopefully) long cruising bug. I was interested to read about the tips part of your article because I have been trying to find out if the tips are shared between everyone behind the scenes aswell as on the ‘frontline’. I haven’t been able to find out if this is so until your article but could I ask – how do you know this for sure please? Did one of the Ventura staff tell you this is the case? Or did you assume this is the case? The article was really helpful, thank you for writing it! I look forward to hearing your response. Lisa

Following on from my previous comments about tips, please accept my profound apologies for calling you Christine!!!

Hi Lisa! Thanks for leaving a comment, and so sorry for the super-late reply. I didn’t notice your comment until now!

I honestly can’t remember how I heard about the tips being split. I must’ve been told this by one of the staff. My memory is terrible! Have you been on the Ventura yet?

Really glad you found my article helpful 🙂

Cool Cruiser

P&O website used to have a page listing who the current captains are - I've searched and can't find the page any more.

Any idea who will be captain on Ventura in October-November this year?

Previous postings on this subject have revealed that P & O don't publish info on how senior staff are deployed any more.

P & O have not said why but one can only surmise that it would be a safety/anti-terrorism measure. But it also allows flexibility to switch staff at short notice without complaints from passengers who could claim that they booked a particular cruise because so and so was the Captain or Ents Manager.

Sorry came out blurred - just realised it doesn't go past Sept.

As a Princess fan who came back to P & O after 13 years, I have been surprised at the lack of info from P &O. The first notable thing was the refusal to give firm port times, just vague late afternoon, etc. A P & O cruiser told me this on a Princess cruise and I didn't believe him.

Get quite a few emails from Princess, welcome from the Captain, Maitre d, Cruise Director re entertainment, etc. Why are P & O so secretive!!

Incidentally, going on a second Azura cruise to get another experience of them, so will see how it goes.

We now look up the port via a cruise calendar app.

It usually gives an indication of P&O timings. As well as if there are other ships in port that day. It's a good way to see if you have a full day or merely am or pm there.

Are you allowed to name the app?

Update 10 minutes later. Finally remembered the website showing the approx. times.

P&O don't tell their captains either, they have to visit the website http://www.cruisecal.com like everyone else.

Just off Ventura where Captain Angelo Vago was in command, understand he will be leaving shortly and while I can't be specific, it will be either Simon Terry or Derek Gray taking over.

When we were on Oriana in Sept 16, Captain Ashley Cook said that he was leaving Oriana when we docked in S'ton to fly to Canada to take command of Arcadia. David Box was to be the new master of Oriana.

Just back off Oriana and David Box was Captain. I hadn't seen him since Artemis in 2008. Nice man.

Yes he is. We were on Adonia in 2014 and Captain Box was the master. Very friendly.

These are all captains I haven't heRd of. Mind you on our Aurora cruise we had Wesley Dunlop and he was a new one..so are they bringing in new Captains..or just the odd one or two
That's very interesting. We're on Aurora in Dec and I was wondering who her captain is. Was you cruise on Aurora recent?

We were all told last New Year that Capt Vago was retiring in March and heard all about retirement do's etc. ..... and then he reappeared on Ventura. So who knows....

It doesn't matter to me who the Captain is, but it is nice when some are a real presence around the ship like Captain Camby and Derek Gray.

They do seem to change regularly. Even though we've cruised with P&O quite a few times, I don't recognise many of those names at all.

Our favourite Captain was Chris Wells. He was always personable, informative and entertaining. I think he's now with Cunard. Least favourite was Paul Brown on Britannia. Very little info, the same 'joke' every day (time for a gin and tonic, maybe two) and his pronunciation was appalling - cruisin', sailin', mornin', evenin' etc. No 'g's in his vocabulary, although that seems to be a trend with people nowadays including many politicians (Priti Patel, Sadiq Kahn etc etc) and, the worst of all, Sky News otherwise excellent political editor Beth Rigby. Sounds appalling!

We had David Pembridge on this years Britannia cruise who was infinitely better and made announcements when there were dolphins and pilot whales, which can really make a cruise for people.

Yes, they do seem to change around regularly. We had Ashley Cook and Marcin Banach on Oriana last Dec. They changed over in Gib!

That's interesting - we had him on our first cruise in 2012 on Azura and I did wonder where he'd gone to! Interesting as on Oriana in 2014 we had Captain Camby and this year we had him on Azura!

Neil Turnbull did that on Azura last year as well - or it may have been his 2nd in command - either way we were told several times and certainly by the Captain when we passed Ventura (with the "not so handsome captain" in Turnbull's words!)

Getting on Azura on Friday. Does anyone know if Captain Camby is still on or has he changed over for the winter?

We were on that cruise too. It was his first cruise as captain with P&O, he had previously been with SAGA. I think he said he was doing 6 months from August 29th before having a break of 3 or 6 months.

Host Sharon

We have him for the second half of Aurora's world cruise.

  • 1 year later...

Can anyone please share the current staff list for the P&O vessels? I know P&O previously listed their staff however I cannot seem to locate an up-to-date list? I have only managed to find a list from 2014. Does any body have a recent list from 2017?
