Best of Indochina - 16 Days

Every aspect of the tour ran smoothly. The transfers were great and it was so good not to have to worry about getting from the airport to the hotel. The hotels were excellent and the tour guides were fantastic. The dining experiences when include were great. Overall, very happy with all aspects of the tour. Perhaps the only downside was that we were not with the same group of travellers from start to finish. We met some great travellers and would have liked to spend more time with them.

Incredible Indochina in 15 Days - Laos/Vietnam/Cambodia Tour

Incredible Indochina in 15 Days - Laos/Vietnam/Cambodia

My family was very pleased with the hotel's high standards and the company's outstanding service. The allocated guide made every effort to make us feel comfortable. We loved admiring nature and sampling Laotian cuisine. Furthermore, our kids were overjoyed to catch fish for the first time in Hoi An, Vietnam. This was even more enjoyable for them since they had to roll up their sleeves to cook before tasting the food. The Angkor wat in Cambodia was breathtaking.

Vision of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand Tour 18 Days 17 Nights Tour

Vision of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand Tour 18 Days 17 Nights

I spent 25 days travelling across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, and I couldnt have had a better partner for this than Asia Focus Travel, and especially Ms Thu. They were flexible to adjust the travel itinerary to my interests and to allow me to change the direction of my travel so that I could see both the Vietnamese and Thai lantern festivals. For the preparation of my travel, they sent me all necessary information about flights and visas, and Ms Thu remained 24/7 available throughout my travel, always caring for me. It was a great help that all transfers, hotels and programs were booked, so I did not need to worry about anything when I arrived to a new country. The hotels were very high standards, the drivers were fully reliable, always on time, and in-between the interesting programs there was sufficient time left to discover the places on my own. During the travel one day I got sick (luckily nothing serious), and Ms Thu moved mountains and alerted everyone around me to look after me, until I could reach the hospital. This was very much appreciated as a solo traveler, as despite being far from my family, I was not alone. Ms Thu also remained very helpful and flexible when I modified some of the travel days towards the end of the travel, and even helped for me to look up information regarding visas and re-entries to some countries. All in all, this travel was a lifetime experience for me, and the help of Ms Thu made it absolutely safe, reliable and smooth. I can fullheartedly recommend this agency for any travel plans.

Itinerary idea in detail

Private customized tour. Ask us about booking your international flights at our preferred rates.

Your guide will meet you at airport arrivals and transfer you to your hotel. At leisure this evening — perhaps wander out into the vibrant Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake, which is beautifully lit at night.

Temple of Literature, Hanoi

This morning, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the Museum of Ethnology so that you can start learning about the origins, distribution, appearance and fascinating culture of the many ethnic minorities in Vietnam. In the afternoon, an in-depth exploration into the delicious street food available on your doorstep is given by an expert in the field — a local food blogger.

Conical hat making, Vietnam

Today is a full day of driving from Hanoi up to the mountains of Ha Giang. There is plenty to see along the way, and you will have opportunities to observe and interact with locals, take photos of stunning scenery and stop for refreshments and comfort breaks. You stay in a pretty, family-run homestay in a village on the edge of Ha Giang, that is very pleasant to wander around.

Dao Ao Dai women selling brooms

Today, the driving from Ha Giang to Meo Vac takes about half the day, but as ever, there are stops for refreshments and scenery. Your home for the night is a traditional Hmong, clay-walled building which is very characterful. You may like to do some walking in the local area — the Auberge can arrange a guide for you.

Meo Vac Market, Ha Giang

Today, drive to Nam Dam Village (a half day's driving, but the stops will probably make the journey take the best part of the day). A highlight of this journey will no doubt be the vertiginous scenery of the Mã Pí Lèng Pass. You will also visit the Hmong King's Palace at Sa Phin, designed by a Chinese Feng Shui expert, and see a Hmong weaving village with its intricate looms.

Black Hmong at Meo Vac market

This morning, you may like to do some walking in the area populated by the Red Dzao ethnic minority. There is some great scenery and walks between two and six hours. Later transfer by car to Hoang Su Phi, this should only take about three hours. It is a very scenic journey, however, you will see some beautiful rice terraces — the last section is a fairly windy mountain road. Now for a stay at the lovely Pan Hou Village, a beautifully landscaped property with an excellent restaurant and spa house.

Hoang Su Phi, Vietnam

A full day's trekking out on the rice terraces with your private guide. Don't forget your camera!

Hoang Su Phi, Vietnam

Another lovely drive today, to get to Sapa. Please be aware that some of the roads earlier on in the journey are untarmacked mountain roads. Some of the valleys you pass through are absolutely stunning. It's a full day's driving with stops. Tonight stay at the gorgeous Topas Ecolodge, with great views out to the mountains.

Views over the rice terraces of Sapa, Vietnam

Today your guide will take you out to visit minority villages in the area. In the afternoon you can take the cable car up to the top of Fan Si Pan, the tallest mountain in Indochina.

Morning mist over Sapa town, Vietnam

Today is a full day's driving (with stops, as usual) to get to Dien Bien Phu, the site of a very important battle between the French and the Vietnamese that led to the French moving out of Vietnam.

Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam

This morning you have touring of the museum and key sites on the battlefield. Afterwards, you have a couple of hours of driving to get to the little-used border with Laos. Meet your Laotian guide and driver and drive through pretty mountain scenery to Muang Khua, situated on the stunning Nam Ou River.

River travel from Muang La to Nong Khiaw

Today you have a combination of road and boat transfers to reach Phongsali in northern Laos. The boat journeys are incredible — very few tourists get up to this part of the Nam Ou, it feels quite wild and remote. The traveling will take most of the day, but as usual, there will be stops along the way. Phongsali is one of the least visited parts of Laos, it is a mountainous area populated by many ethnic minorities (including the Akha) and where tea is grown. It is close to the border with China.

Trekking towards an Akha Village, Phongsali

Today, your private guide will help you explore Phongsali and its surroundings, including tea plantations and processing plants. The procedure for "curing" the tea once picked is fascinating.

Boat travel in northern Laos, Phongsali

From Phongsali you have a full day's driving to get to Muang La — and a very special property indeed. Muang La Lodge is a luxury property, set up by a French couple, that is perfectly in harmony with its surroundings and the local community. All meals are included here and the food is really quite special. The lodge has an excellent spa and hot springs on site!

Local minority hill tribe village, Muang La, Laos

A full day to explore the local area and learn about the ethnic minorities here.

Laos tribal women

The last leg of your incredible overland journey takes you, over about half a day, to charming Luang Prabang. Enjoy the atmospheric night market.

Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Today you have about half the day to explore the attractions of Luang Prabang with your private guide. We strongly recommend visiting the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, a very well-maintained museum dedicated to the tribal culture of Laos. This will help you process much of what you saw on your journey over from Vietnam.

Tad Sae waterfall

We will transfer you to the airport ahead of your international flight home.

……………………………………………………………………

What is included in the price of my holiday? Your holiday will include accommodation , meals, guide , transport, entrance fees and most of the entertainment while touring.

When is the best time to travel to Vietnam? All year is fine. Travellers should note that Vietnam is especially hot and humid (highs of 35 – 38 degrees) between June and September and Hanoi and the north tends to be cool (15 – 20 degrees) and often misty in December, January and February. The wet season (May to October) does not usually obstruct travel as rain is normally confined to an hour or two each day. The wet season is the hottest and most humid period of the year. Central Vietnam may experience unstable weather in October and November.

Do the Vietnamese harbour grudges against Westerners because of the Vietnam War? Remarkably, the Vietnamese are some of the most friendly and hospitable people in Asia. Travellers to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of the people.

Will I encounter lots of poverty and squalor travelling through Vietnam? Vietnam is one of the poorest countries in Asia. This is not so apparent to travellers as food is plentifully available and business is now thriving. Travellers will encounter beggars in the cities and will also likely be confronted by some poverty. These are all part of the experience of Vietnam. The more powerful image of the Vietnamese is of a positive people committed to improving their lives and advancing their country.

What kinds of transport are used on tour? For road journeys, air conditioned coasters or mini buses are used. These are modern, spacious, comfortable, well maintained, safe vehicles – perfect for small group travel. In cities, towns and villages we use a combination of cyclos (Vietnamese tri-shaw), boats, bicycles (optional) and our own two feet. Some tours include domestic flights on Vietnam Airlines. Most flights are on modern Airbus 320 or Fokker 70 planes. Some tours also include rail trips.

What type of restaurants and food will be available on tour? Vietnamese cuisine is diverse and tasty and one of the many highlights of a visit to the country. We therefore usually eat at quality Vietnamese restaurants – serving a selection of seafood, chicken, beef, pork and vegetable dishes. Some travellers prefer a mixture of International (Western) and Vietnamese food while touring. In Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi there is a generous array of international cuisine, while in most provincial areas the choice is more limited. Breakfast is included each day on our tours and is usually a mix of western buffet and continental style. Vegetarians will find a good selection of fresh foods available

What is not included in the price of my holiday? The price will not include organised any excursions show out on tour program, carbonated soft drinks or alcoholic beverages (unless an ‘All inclusive’ package is purchased), photographs, gratuities (these are included in the cost on some tour packages, please enquire for details), medical services, casino expenditures, spa and beauty treatments or other miscellaneous items you have purchase on tour.

Am I best to book early? It is never too early to begin planning your holiday. Booking early is generally your best assurance of obtaining the arrangements and accommodation of your choice, especially if you are planning a holiday in the peak season or over Christmas and New Year.

When do I have to pay the balance of my tour? Once you have paid you deposit then you can relax and start looking forward to your holiday, your remaining balance due date is then 60days before departure.

What is the difference between any tour type? There are no much difference between any tour’ type , Most packages have a best service runing by our conditions, except Accommodation by customers request,

How will I know what activities are happening on the tour? Your program will provide a detailed schedule of events for that day including locations and times.

How do I keep my valuables safe? Most Hotels are now fitted with safes but otherwise there are boxes in the pursers office.

Are the tour itineraries subject to change? Yes, all tour itineraries are subject to change. With guest safety as the number one priority for the tours, on the rare occasions that weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances may occur, it may cause a change in the original itinerary. In these circumstances, the guide will do everything within their power to guide an alternate option or we will set an other option to you.

How much luggage can I take? There are no restrictions on how much luggage you can take ontour, , however you should consider the size of your bag.

How do I get to the Cruiser in Halong Bay if i only take cruise trip? They will escort you to the transfer shuttle that goes from your place to the port and back again after the cruise. Most cruise packages offer these services for an additional cost to passengers providing their own way.

When can I board the international flight and domestic flight ? Passengers must be at Airport no later than 2hours prior to departure with internation flights and 1hour with domestic flights.

Can I bring visitors on the tour? For safety and security reasons, no visitors will be allowed on joining with .

Is Vietnam Tour right for honeymooners? Without a doubt! Vietnam Holiday offers an atmosphere that’s just right for romance… cosy dinners for two, strolling on beach at sunset, drinking at opening hotel’ room at the night (even under the stars). Most packages provide special services — and breakfast in bed. Also, some packages offer special programs for performing a marriage ceremony or renewing your marriage vows.

Are there non-smoking rooms at Hotel? Virtually all Hotels have smoking and non-smoking rooms. In fact, many dining rooms, and even some entire restaurants, are now totally smoke-free, reflecting passenger requests. If you want your dining table in a non-smoking area, please advise the restaurant manager when coming.

Are there laundry services in any Hotel? Almost all hotels have laundry facilities and many provide dry-cleaning services. There is, however, an additional charge for professional laundry and dry-cleaning services. Many hotels also have self-service launderettes.

Am I likely to become seasick? Seasickness is not common on larger cruise boats during on some Cruise trip in Halong Bay or Mekong Delta or with Flights as they are equipped with stabilizers designed to minimize the feeling of movement. If you should feel queasy, medicine is available from your guide steward. If you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to consider consulting your doctor prior to departure.

Will I need a tuxedo? Many Tourism Union Indochina Travel now have a more relaxed and casual approach to dress throughout the tour – while on others, formal dinners or parties are part of the fun. Just wanted you to know that Troy and I had the best trip ever to Cambodia and Vietnam! Everything was perfect. Sadly, we had to cut our Halong Bay Cruise short one day because a typhoon was coming but they immediately took us back to Hanoi and upgraded us to a fabulous suite. At least we got one night on board, it was sad to leave but we managed to do most of our activities that first day on the boat…bike riding, kayaking in and out of caves, tai chi on deck, cooking class and several fabulous meals. Once again, thank you. Would highly recommend Tourism Union Indochina to anybody!!!!

“…definitely the most professional tour vacation I’d experienced. From the booking onwards, you folks have top ratings all-round. Your Tour Leader (Phil Jordan) deserves high praises for his expert handling….and both local guides (Sarem in Phnom Penh and Phath in Siem Reap) were also top-notch. I’ll be spreading your company’s virtue around, and from now on you folks will be the first tour company I’ll look to for organizing any future outings out east.

On behalf of Martin and myself, our eternal thanks for making the Cambodian vacation so relaxing and enjoyable by looking after us so well.”

“I would like to compliment Tourism Union Indochina on their superior customer service. It seems to me that many travel companies think their work ends at drawing up itineraries and arranging hotels. However, I found that your company really values the customer experience and this was shown by the phone calls we received in each city, checking whether we had found the experience to our expectation. I think this alone is ingenious, as any problems can be addressed immediately and not potentially left to mar the whole holiday. In all, a wonderful experience in a superb country.”

“Just a quick note to let you know that our trip to Vietnam was a “flawless adventure” one that we will never forget. I know we hit the jackpot with Tourism Union Indochina for many reasons, but one of the biggest was the size of the group. If I ever go on another tour, it will be with a 15 person maximum! Emmie and all local guides were outstanding and the other travellers on our tour were all nice people and easy to get along with. We loved every minute, all the sites, food, history, people, etc. Truly a successful trip! “

“We just got back a couple of days ago form our Vietnam trip and I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had! We were thrilled to have had Josh as our guide and we couldn’t have asked for a more professional, thoughtful, enthusiastic and just plain fun guide. Vietnam is a tremendous destination and it offered everything we hoped for, but Josh’s guidance really enhanced our experience of the culture. We would not hesitate to book another tour with Tourism Union Indochina (although, sadly, it may be some time before we have the opportunity to do so) and have been thoroughly satisfied with our experience. I particularly appreciate your flexibility in dealing with the Visa problem that caused us to cancel our original booking. I cannot say enough about our trip – suffice to say that you’ll be hearing from us again soon!”

“I have just returned from my holiday to Vietnam and Cambodia and wanted you to know that the trip was fantastic. We visited all the big ticket items, many small unknown places and had a great experience. The trip was very well organised, accommodation was much better than expected, guides were very good (a couple were exceptional). Congratulations on a well put together trip. Our tour leader was Natalie (Nat) Bemrose. Nat started the trip as our guide but ended the trip as our friend. She was terrific as a guide, friend and travel companion. We never had to bother about anything…because Nat handled everything so well. She made sure all our accommodation was acceptable, helped with food and advice on what extra to see in our free time and above all she was just a pleasure to travel with.”

“We had a great month of travel in Vietnam. Vietnam is a beautiful country, but a major contributor to the success of this trip was the excellent tour company, Tourism Union Indochina. The journey was obviously well planned by people who know and love the country and are sensitive to the needs of the traveller. A company can have a grand vision, but it is the front line people who make it happen and Tourism Union Indochina has obviously chosen its tour leaders and guides well. Fi Reeves, our tour leader, won 12 devoted followers through her unfailing organizational skills, knowledge of the country, and good humour. Fi knew how to help us have fun, and we shared many good meals, good times, and even a karaoke session. All our local guides were excellent, especially Mr Phiem. His English skills were excellent, his good humour and bad jokes endless, and his ability to answer our questions about Vietnam was exceptional. We are very glad we decided to travel with Tourism Union Indochina to Vietnam. “

“I adored Laos! The people are still so open and kind. It might just be my favourite country in Southeast Asia. We only had 5 people in our group and that was an ideal amount of companions. The logistics of the trip were fantastic; there were always vans waiting for us at each stop and airport, and the drivers were excellent! Our guide in Laos was a very nice guy who will get even better with more experience leading groups. I was impressed with your itinerary and the nice variety of accommodations. Based on my experience and on my travelmate’s recommendations, I would definitely travel with you again. Thanks for sharing Laos with me.”

“I have just returned from the tour of a Tale of Three Cities and had an absolutely fantastic holiday. Belinda Shillcock was a superb organiser, she put 120% effort into the trip, and helped make it a journey of a lifetime. I would also like to add that the three local guides that assisted Belinda were also excellent and certainly able to answer any questions that were put to them. I have recommended the tour to many people back in England – the space on the coach, the choice of hotels, the excellent choice of restaurants and overall maximizing the use of time to gain as much knowledge of Vietnam and Cambodia. I can say we all came back with a thorough comprehensive understanding of both those countries – much of it thanks to Belinda. I enjoyed it so much that I am now thinking of joining one of your trips around China – especially if your guides are the calibre of Belinda. She really was exceptional.”

“We would like to thank you and everyone else involved from your company, Tourism Union Indochina, for our recent, absolutely amazing, fantastic trip. As this was our first trip with Tourism Union Indochina we were a little nervous about what was to come however, what did eventuate far exceeded our expectations. Thanks to the expertise, professionalism and passion of the tour guide Belinda Schillcock, and her three local helpers, every day unfolded as a magical experience leaving us with a ‘real sense’ of the places we visited. As your brochure suggests, we ‘were captivated by the wonders of the countries in which we travelled in’ and our experiences increased our understanding of the history & culture of those places & their peoples.’ We have nothing but the highest praise for Tourism Union Indochina and will strongly recommend the company to all of our friends. Our sincerest congratulations for one of, if not, the best tour we have ever experienced. “

“We travelled to Vietnam with you two years ago with Katrina Cameron as our guide. We have travelled all over the world and this was by far the best experience of our lives. The small group travel concept is fabulous beyond words. We made some wonderful friends and enjoyed ourselves immensely. This year we are back and would like to see China this way with you again.”

“I had the best trip to Vietnam with you and will not think twice about coming back to you when it’s time to head back to Asia. Great news about your UK office, hope it gets you more British support for your trips so you can run even more! We always recommend you – my American friend loved her trip last year proving you really do have international appeal!”

“I wanted to express to you my appreciation for making my travels an experience that I will never forget. Zoe Macfarlane really went out of her way to insure that myself and the group was not only well informed of each place that we would be visiting, but she wanted each of us to get everything that we individually wanted from every location and I am confident in saying that I saw a different side of Thailand that most travelers would have. I honestly never write these letters after I have finished a trip, but I felt compelled to do so because the service was that extraordinary. The next time I travel to South East Asia I will use your organization again, as I am confident in your company’s ability to put together unbelievable trips and hire extraordinary guides. Again, thank you for the memories, the professionalism, and please thank Ms Macfarlane for making this trip a true experience.”

“We are just sorting our Vietnam photos and recalling what an enjoyable trip it was! Everything went very well. The group of 8 got along very well which contributed a lot to the enjoyment of the tour – we all ate out most nights together, a good indication I think. Our tour leader Zoe, was excellent and organisation of everything went very smoothly. As an introduction to Vietnam it worked very well, and we’ll certainly consider another Tourism Union Indochina tour in the future. We have already recommended your website to friends and family.”

“We had a wonderful time – what a thoroughly professional and well organised company! Ned was our tour guide and we were so lucky to have her – she has a real passion for the country and the people. I loved Vietnam and will be heading back there. I loved Hoi An – the beach, food of the area, art galleries, tailors and the fact every bar had 5 hour happy hour 2 for 1 drinks each night! I have already got a couple of our clients that I am going to go through Tourism Union Indochina’s brochure and my pictures with.”

“A huge thank you for the help with organising our recent trip to Vietnam. We had a wonderful time, thoroughly enjoyed every minute and have been singing the praises of the country and Tourism Union Indochina since we returned. It was the best holiday we have had in years. Everything went so smoothly, Claire was a joy, quietly organised and Tifo and Viet both great sources of knowledge and good fun. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. They were all great ambassadors for Tourism Union Indochina.”

“Our trip to Vietnam was an incredible experience. Words cannot fully explain how much we enjoyed the trip. Felicity, our tour guide was marvellous. She was not only a great organiser and guide, but a great person who went well outside her responsibilities to ensure that our trip was a memorable one. Next year we are looking to visit Cambodia and I will contact you when we begin planning!”

“Just a quick note to say my 10 day highlights of Vietnam was AWESOME… the tour totally exceeded my expectations. The hotels were awesome and Stacey, our guide, was fantastic as were the local guides! Loved EVERY minute of it, I can’t even find a fault or complaint if I tried! I can’t talk highly enough about it …I really want to say thank you so much for organising it all for me. Definitely recommend to ALL ages and people! “

“Flicks vitality, enthusiasm and general caring and warm personality really made this experience for me so rewarding. Nothing was too much trouble for her. She is a real asset to your organisaton. I wish I had staff like her… I would love to do another tour in the future but don’t know how any tour leader can now measure up to Ms Flick.”

“I knew nothing about Vietnam as a holiday destination but I had the holiday of a lifetime. Every day living history was witnessed, transport between events and venues was excellent, the food was wonderful and it was top value for money!”

“Awesome country. Awesome people. Awesome trip. Awesome!”

“The itinerary was well thought out and I feel I have a real sense of all aspects of life in Vietnam – the history, its political system, food and culture.”

“The Vietnam tour was FANTASTIC….our tour guide, Joshua, from Tourism Union Indochina was one out of the box !!! It was so good having someone organise internal flights, where to eat, what to expect to pay etc. etc. He was our eyes, ears and tastebuds. The pace of the tour was also great. Do put Vietnam on your agenda before it becomes too commercial. The food, people, countryside, history and shopping are all soooo amazing!”

“I wanted to say a very big personal thank you from Janet and me for the absolutely amazing and outstanding holiday we had in China. It turned out to be a far better trip in all respects from that we were anticipating and I can only say again for the nth time how glad we both are that we chose Tourism Union Indochina for our trip. The organisation was in our view faultless, the accommodation far better than we expected and ideally located, and the things we did and saw, fantastic. When we got home we re-read the Company Brochure and the best complement we can give is to say that the Tour achieves exactly what it says in the Book.”

“It was great to have a local guide who had amazing knowledge of his country. I really enjoyed hearing Mr Boulae’s experiences and his running of the tour was superb. I loved the boat ride down the Mekong, and it was amazing to see the giving of the alms by the monks.”

“Our leader Rebecca is a natural treasure. The local restaurants, shopping and history are amazing. Hue’s Saigon Morin was pure bliss – I enjoy the colonial/planter atmosphere – that Tourism Union Indochina uses.”

“On an ‘adventure’ holiday I did not expect such good hotels in such great locations, so was pleasantly surprised!”

“The flow of this trip was so smooth & felt so effortless & natural. Our tour leader Rebecca was so efficient in making everything work out well, keeping calm under any circumstance!””

“Our local guide Mr Saren’s very genuine personal guided tour of Phnom Penh’s Toul Sleng Museum was unforgettable. It made it poignant and real in a way that only someone that lives there could do”

“Our local guide “Matthew” was absolutely lovely, great company, friendly, polite, helpful, with good ideas for our itinerary, and met all our requirements. Please may I take him home?”

“I loved cycling and walking in the countryside outside Yangshuo – being able to get close to the rural population in China. Of course, cruising the Yangtze and passing through the locks was also a highlight!”

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Thailand. The places were interesting and the people so friendly. It was made all the more enjoyable with our great guide! Staying in the Floating Hotel and Lisu Lodge were fantastic experiences”

“Our local guide was exceptional, with a real passion toward his job, always wanting to impart his knowledge onto us. Staying in the jungle rafts on the River Kwai was a once in a lifetime experience!”

“We really enjoyed everything – the sights and sounds, the people (both Vietnamese and fellow-travellers) and Monica Fairley, our tour leader was excellent. Our minds are still buzzing with images and recollections from Vietnam and Cambodia while we get back to ‘normality’, whatever that it!”

“Had a fantastic holiday….Kristy was great, positive, professional and kept everyone happy. Not easy the age range was 30-80! Fantastic small group, no problems at all. Gorgeous hotels all the way! Going to China for holidays next year and will definitely use you guys, can I have Kristy again though?”

“I do want to go on record to say that our trip last November/December to Cambodia and Vietnam was a huge, huge once-in-a-lifetime experience for us two. We have been praising your company every chance we’ve had since we returned home. Your planning, your timing, your sensitivity, your professionalism were extraordinary! “

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Can I drink the water in Laos?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Laos. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Laos?

Major credit cards are generally accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in the city and tourist areas in the cities. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Laos.

What is ATM access like in Laos?

ATMs can be found in the cities of Laos, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic. Smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam & Laos?

The best time for visiting Vietnam and Laos is from October to April. The temperature is cool; the sky is clear from north to south in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the weather in Laos is mild and dry all year. Besides, from December to January, the weather in north Vietnam will be colder, which is better when exploring the mountainous area in the north of Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Mekong River, Laos' principal waterway, has high water levels that make transferring simple.

What are the top places that you should not miss when taking a tour to Vietnam & Laos ?

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital and second-largest metropolis, is the country's political, economic, and cultural hub. Hanoi is a historic metropolis with traditions dating back over 1,000 years. The city contains several areas of ancient importance and beautiful scenery, earning it the moniker "land of millennium cultural relics."

The splendor of nature and artistic significance of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent jewel in Vietnam's tiara. Visiting this area is like entering into a fairy tale, the stuff of tales, with dozens of towering limestone islands, karst grottoes, and quaint junk boats cruising the brilliant emerald waters.

Hoi An is a popular tourist attraction with a 1,500-year heritage. Therefore, Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was previously named one of the top 10 tourist cities in Asia, attracting visitors from all over the world with its long white-sand beaches and many interesting activities.

Luang Prabang

The deep appreciation of the culture that Luang Prabang, one of the must-visit cities in Laos, generously extends to all visitors is incredibly alluring, whether it be for the city's history, culture, religious activities, nightlife, variety of genuine meals, or well-known attractions like Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, or Royal Palace Museum.

In Vang Vieng, visitors may enjoy kayaking and inner tubing on the Nam Song River, as well as the town's rope swings, zip lines, swimming pools, and wide decks for mingling. Many ethnic Lao, Kmou, and Hmong villages are also within a short distance from the town, and Vang Vieng Organic Farm is located in the hamlet of Phoudindaeng, about 4 kilometers north of the town. Visitors may thus engage in a variety of activities in Vang Vieng and have many unforgettable experiences.

The best itinerary for a Vietnam & Laos tour?

You will first arrive in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest city in Vietnam with plenty of scenic spots and historical sites first. Then take a flight to Hoi An to enjoy a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1,500-year heritage then continue to take another flight to Hanoi - the country's political, economic, and cultural hub and Halong Bay - another UNESCO World Heritage Site and end the trip in Luang Prabang to enjoy the city's history, culture, religious activities, nightlife, variety of genuine meals, or well-known attractions like Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, or Royal Palace Museum, etc.

How many days should I spend for a tour to Vietnam & Laos

For a short trip (6 – 8 days), you can visit the three most popular places in both countries:  Hanoi, Halong Bay (Vietnam) and Luang Prabang (Laos). If you have 9 – 13 days, Hue, Hoian, Ho Chi Minh City, and Mekong Delta are good choices for adding to your trip to Vietnam and Laos. In the case where there are 14 days or more, besides the above destinations in Vietnam and Laos, you will have enough time to visit other places in Laos like Vang Vieng, Vientiane, and Xieng Khouang.

International visitors to Vietnam are sure to be deeply impressed by the captivating landscapes, unique traditional cultures, and proud history that permeates the country.

Explore the tunnels to gain insight into their historical significance and the resilience of the Vietnamese people. Return to Saigon after the visit.

Immerse Yourself in Saigon's History: Enjoy a city tour highlighting Saigon's iconic landmarks. Admire the striking Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, both showcasing beautiful architecture from the past. Visit the former Presidential Palace, once the seat of the Saigon Government. End the day with a visit to the War Remnants Museum, providing a poignant perspective on the American War.

Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia Cultural Walking Tour

Most tourists never see Halong Bay in the morning. They miss the fishing junks sliding past limestone spires that thrust from the turquoise water. They can't imagine how the scent of fresh coffee hangs in the air as eagles float overhead. It's an extravagant sensory moment possible only because we spend the night on the water…on a luxury junk. And it's just one unique event we'll share with you in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Of course we visit the great cities of Indochina. But we also stop at the simple homestead of a rice farmer…meet the enormous residents of a Laotian elephant preserve…wander the temples of Angkor with an expert guide…and stay in Indochina’s finest hotels and resorts. Along the way, you’ll wind your way through exotic markets, eat truly remarkable local specialties, and experience the traditional cultures you only find if you approach the region like a traveler, rather than a tourist.

• Walk along rice fields, meeting farmers in conical straw hats

• Ride a long-tail boat in the heart of the Mekong Delta

• Dine at one of Saigon's finest French restaurants

• Explore by rickshaw before visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels

• Shop the local market where the wares range from incense to flowers to betel nuts.

• Near Hanoi, walk on a countryside footpath from a pagoda through bamboo groves to visit children and their teacher at a local school

• Explore Halong Bay, Vietnam’s eighth wonder of the world, with limestone islands that sweep like a dragon’s tail across the emerald green bay

• Learn to make spring rolls during a hands-on cooking instruction.

• Shop for fine ethnic handicrafts in Luang Prabang’s night market

• Participate in a moving ritual as barefoot monks walk silently for their morning alms

• Enter Angkor Wat through a gate known only to the locals

Why Choose Classic Journeys

We believe in creating authentic connections by immersing you into the history and culture of a people and place. So we find the most well-connected local guides who share their relationships and knowledge with us. And with them, we handcraft walking tours in cinematic settings that allow you to see the world on foot and at eye level.

It’s why Travel + Leisure magazine has named Classic Journeys as the #1 World’s Best Tour Operator multiple times, and the editors of T+L say, "Classic Journeys provides unbeatable access to experiences around the globe." Here’s what that access means for you every time you travel with us.

  • Experience the world on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region.
  • Exceptional full-time local guides who become your well-connected friend. Our amazing guides are with you throughout each day of the tour, share their lifelong connections as well as engaging anecdotes about the history and culture of the region.
  • Small groups that provide you unrivaled access. An average of fewer than 10 guests per departure means we can offer you special access to sites like Stonehenge so you experience the stone circle when it’s closed to the general public, a guided visit to Zion Narrows that other companies cannot arrange because of larger group sizes, and vineyard walks with a count and countess in Tuscany.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in the region you’re exploring, including rainforest lodges, 16th century villas, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From gourmet picnics to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know our walking tour regions more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Sustainable travel that supports the places you’re visiting. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.

Visit cambodia's ta prohm temple, angkor's ta prohm temple... one with the jungle.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor contains hundreds of temples and palaces built by Cambodia's Khmer people from the 9th – 15th centuries… all enveloped by forest until the early 20th century. Built in the 12th century as a Buddhist university and monastery, jungle-clad Ta Prohm Temple is one of Angkor's gems. Left in the clutches of centuries-old vines, its delicate reliefs are covered by creeping plants and its massive stones are cleaved by green; the effect is otherworldly yet magnificent.

Meet the hill tribe villagers of chiang mai in thailand.

Outside Thailand's city of Chiang Mai, the people of the region's remote, rural hill tribes farm and observe traditional ways of life. Each tribe has its own language, beliefs, customs and crafts... and its people are happy to share them with visitors to their colorful villages. Meet members of the Palong, Padong and the "long-necked" Karen tribes, whose women are known for the distinctive, traditional brass rings worn around their necks – which you can try on yourself.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey and current visas to enter Vietnam and Cambodia. You will not need a visa to enter Thailand for the short duration of this tour. Please Note: Your passport should contain at least three blank visa pages.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of Vietnam, of Cambodia and Thailand to determine if entry visas are required.

Tauck has collaborated with VisaCentral in the US to assist our guests with processing and issuing their travel documents. If a guest opts to work with VisaCentral, their services are available online at www.visacentral.com/tauck . To speak directly with VisaCentral Customer Service, call 844-860-7199 (toll-free in the US) or email [email protected] .  All US citizens require a valid passport to enter Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain a minimum of at least 3 blank visa pages. Please be advised that that extra visa pages are no longer available for passports. If you need additional pages in order to comply, you must renew your passport even if your current passport has not expired.  If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest US passport agency or consult the US State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .  A visa is not required for Thailand.  Visas are necessary for both Vietnam and Cambodia. Please note that these visas must be processed within 90 days of your arrival.  All fees will be listed on visa paperwork.  The visa fee, as well as any applicable consular fees and shipping fees, are not included in the tour cost. The visa application will include the amount of the visa fee, which varies by destination.  Additionally, you may elect to obtain a Vietnam e-visa online at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en and/or a Cambodian e-visa on line at www.evisa.gov.kh  Non-US citizens should contact the embassies or consulates of Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand to determine what documentation is required.  We advise bringing a photocopy of your passport as well as 2 extra passport photos in case your passport is lost during the tour. Be sure to check the expiration of your passport. New passports and visas may take several weeks to obtain.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to obtain ALL necessary documentation prior to your tour may result in being denied entry into a country, or delays in entry until proper documentation can be obtained. In consideration of the larger group (and to maintain our planned itinerary), travelers who have failed to obtain the necessary documentation in advance may need to remain at the airport, and could thus be responsible for arranging (and paying for) their own transportation to join the group. Tauck will not be responsible for obtaining any missing documentation, nor will Tauck be responsible for any expenses incurred, missed tour components or other losses resulting from the failure to obtain proper travel documents in advance.  Regardless of which visa service company is used, the application will require a summary of your Tauck itinerary, which we will be happy to provide. Please email [email protected].   Please note: Because a visa is an official document, Tauck cannot apply for a visa on your behalf, and we are very limited regarding the assistance we're able to provide. If you require help, we recommend working with a reputable visa service company as they can provide the highest level of assistance.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $759  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to strictly enforced weight restrictions on the on-tour flights, luggage weight per person must not exceed 44 lbs (20 kg) and you are permitted only one piece of checked luggage. Luggage exceeding the allowable weight is subject to excess baggage charges, which may result in a considerable additional expense.

The maximum allowable weight for carry-on luggage is 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and the maximum allowable dimensions are 22" by 14" by 10" (55.9 cm by 35.6 cm by 25 cm).  These dimensions include all wheels, handles, pockets, etc. If these dimensions are exceeded, the carry-on piece will be checked.

Regulations within most airports require that customers handle their own luggage through customs.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking  here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking  here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes 6 on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Southeast Asia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Please Note: There are numerous steps on this itinerary. In addition to walking, various other modes of transportation used to highlight the different aspects of Southeast Asian culture and geography for this tour could include airplane, boat, sampan, cyclo and tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw).

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
