Chennai’s countryside is becoming a hub for traditional village activities

Engaging in farming and village activities in chennai’s countryside has become a favourite pastime for city dwellers..

migrator

Though this trend started before the pandemic, many are now actively signing up for farm tour activities. Ronald Rajesh of Chennai Adventure Club, tells DT Next that city-bred youngsters are looking for fun activities to do along with family and friends. “People living in Chennai, especially youngsters and children, might not have witnessed the village lifestyle. When we launched one day in a village concept, many came forward expressing their interest. A few villages in the outskirts of Chennai are famous for cultural retreats.

One of those villages is Melmaruvathur, about 60 km from the city. We are organising a county farm tour in this village to showcase the deep-rooted culture of Tamil Nadu. During the one-day visit to the farm, you will get to meet the villagers, taste local food, indulge in village activities and play traditional games which old people of the region used to play,” says Ronald.

The one-day tour starts at 9 in the morning and ends at 5. “We have collaborated with traditional artists from the surrounding areas for this tour. There will be village activities like vazhukku maram, uri adithal, undikol, nondi, maattuvandi ride, tug of war, throwball, etc. People can also participate in indoor and outdoor games like pallankuzhi, kallatom, aadu puli aatam, bambaram, goli, kho kho, 7 stones, etc. Depending on the availability of artists, we also host nadhaswaram and karagattam performances,” he adds.

Another venture, Storytrails has been organising story-based walking tours and short excursions. Their village trails are equally popular among adults and children. “In this one-day trip, people get to discover the charms of Chennai’s countryside. The trail is at a paddy field near Kalpakkam. You can listen to stories on how farming is practiced, how it has evolved over the years, what grows on a farm, village economy, farming as a lifestyle and so on. If interested, one can also do a bit of sowing and harvesting,” says Vijay Prabhat Kamalakara of Storytrails.

A Day Trip From Chennai To The Surreal Countryside Of Tamil Nadu

Photo of Footloose Dev

About 3 hours dive from Chennai, and 1 from Vellore, lies a cluster of small villages, the most gorgeous parts of Tamil Nadu, I’d ever seen before - a kind that can put even the highlighted and the far out corners of Kerala at shame. Stunning vistas full of picture-postcard countryside with gorgeous green fields. Tiny villages nestled against the backdrop of blue hills seemingly losing themselves into infinity. Known as Padavedu , these cluster of villages knew no tourism, but its charm spoke highly of a place that no tourist (irrespective of any taste) would want to miss.

I happened to visit this place during a blog trip to understand the advancements of a local NGO working in the area in order to train the local community for various skill sets and thus generate an additional source of income and improve life. As we made our way from Tamil Nadu and ended up in Vellore, before reaching Padavedu, I expected it to be a cluster of a few dull villages with nothing but a hint of inefficiency and indolence. A place where a tourist wanting to spend a few quick recreational days, at least, wound not want to visit. But what I found was rather the contrary.

A calm and scenic place consisting of 17 villages, Padavedu is encircled by the Jawadu hills, river and other water bodies. Paddy fields and coconut trees equally complement its beauty giving the warmth of green in every sight.

Fire turned village into an 'architectural mixtape'

A devastating fire that destroyed much of a village 300 years ago led to a rebuild that turned it into an "architectural mixtape".

On 19 June 1724, The Great Fire of Woburn, in Bedfordshire, started at the Red Lion Inn and then "shot up and down" the High Street.

Dan Jones, from Woburn Events, said a free Woburn Fire Walk has been created to commemorate the tragedy.

A 45-minute audio tour explains how most of the replaced buildings were in the Georgian style, using brick, "making it a little more fire proof", he said.

Mr Jones said the blaze "changed the village completely", as it was a "really important coaching station".

"It just shot up and down the old wooden and thatched buildings. It lost its medieval market, all its stock, all the food... so it was a dramatic event.

"It had 30 inns, so if you wanted a night out in Bedfordshire in the 18th Century, Woburn was the place to be."

The Bedfordshire county archives has documents that say 39 dwelling houses were destroyed.

Woburn had also been hit by fires in 1595 and following a English Civil War skirmish in 1645.

At the time on the 1724 fire, the Duke of Bedford was in his abbey.

"He had some architects in and he must have noticed on the horizon the village burning down," said Mr Jones.

"He sent his architects down afterwards and they designed and rebuilt the village and that's why it has such an unique style.

"If you look around the buildings they're often described as an architectural mixtape, so every building looks a little different, a little bit odd."

He said the Georgian style, recently showcased in the Netflix series Bridgerton , was one "that you don't see outside of places like Bath ".

The audio tour will be available to downloaded via an app and a pamphlet is being created for anyone "not tech savvy", he added.

village tour chennai

Justin Timberlake has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The " Selfish " singer was apprehended by police in the Hamptons at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department.

According to police, Timberlake was pulled over after failing to stop at a stop sign and "maintain his lane of travel." "Upon investigation it was determined that Mr. Timberlake was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated position," the release claims.

The singer was held overnight following his arrest and was released on his own recognizance following his Tuesday morning arraignment.

USA TODAY has reached out to Timberlake's representatives for comment.

Justin Timberlake's arrest comes amid his Forget Tomorrow tour

The 43-year-old's arrest comes ahead of two concerts on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour in Chicago on Friday and Saturday.

The "Mirrors" singer, actor and former member of the boyband NSYNC announced the tour in January , his first in five years. The North American leg of the tour kicked off in April at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, with stops including cities in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the U.K.

Timberlake's return to the stage follows the release of his sixth album,  "Everything I Thought It Was ."

"I worked for a long time on this album and I ended up with 100 songs," he told Zane Lowe for  Apple Music 1 in January. "So narrowing them down to 18 was a thing, and then, yeah, I’m really excited about this album. I think every artist probably says this, but it is my best work."

He added: "There are moments that are incredibly honest, but also, there’s a lot of fun on this album. … Some of the songs are more introspective and some of them are more what I think people know me for."

Timberlake also performed several free shows , including a stop in his hometown of Memphis, New York City and Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles show in March included a surprise performance of his song "Paradise," which features his NSYNC bandmates.

Videos on social media  showed Timberlake standing as the curtain behind him slowly revealed  Lance Bass ,  Joey Fatone ,  Chris Kirkpatrick  and  JC Chasez . The crowd instantly went wild, screaming louder than the group as they began singing.

The group performed "Paradise" and "Bye Bye Bye" together, bridging their new music with their classic hit. The night marked their first performance with all five band members since their reunion at the 2013 VMAs.

History becomes modern in 63rd annual Haus und Garten Tour

Sally McDonald's German Village garden shows serenity and relaxation. The McDonald home and garden can be seen on the Haus und Garten Tour this weekend.

Blending history, preservation and contemporary design, the 63rd annual Haus und Garten Tour celebrates homes and gardens in German Village this weekend.

One can explore unique, curated selections of residences where the past intertwines with modern aesthetics.

Featured homes are picked by tour chairs, pending the homeowner's consent. One such homeowner opening their door to the public is Sally McDonald.

McDonald and her husband John bought their 2,900-square-foot house at 205 Jackson St. in 1996 for $350,000. The purchase came with an adjacent vacant lot , the former home of E&C Lang Company.

At the time, this lot was used to store enormous stone slabs. Now known as Lang Stone, the company has since relocated but is still running today, kept alive by fifth-generation Langs.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“I started coming down here (German Village) in the '70s and it was not restored like that,” said McDonald, owner of InteriorWorks. “It was still cute and charming and, you know, but gradually, they've turned over one after another and the lot became rental property.”

The house at 205 Jackson St. was no more than dirt floors, blacktop and beams. After lots of hard work and renovations , McDonald said she is thrilled with her new home.

“I love the wood floor, and I love all the light that comes in,” said McDonald. “We have an awful lot of light with the big wall of French doors and skylights.”

But she was not finished yet, as just last year, she redid her kitchen, adding new granite, backsplash tiles and more.

Continuing to showcase the mix of history and modernity in German Village is of paramount importance to the German Village Society Executive Director Sean Kessler.

Franklin Park Conservatory upgrades: Franklin Park Conservatory unveils plans for new entrance, visitors center and gardens

“There are lots of house and garden tours in Columbus now, but this was, if not the first, one of the first to happen,” said Kessler.

The uniqueness of these houses, both inside and out, is a huge draw not just for Columbus residents, but tourists from outside of Ohio.

“I was only six months on the job, and I had people coming here saying, ‘Yeah, we're from Baltimore, we come every year; this is our girls' trip. ’ So, yeah, you know, it attracts (people) from all around,” said Kessler.

Scottie Scheffler’s victory at the Memorial presented by Workday shows how far he’s come

Change Text Size

DUBLIN, Ohio – Not long ago, Scottie Scheffler wasn’t winning. Well, wasn’t is harsh. He wasn’t winning enough – not for someone lapping the field from tee to green at a rate not seen since peak Tiger Woods. That type of prowess is historically accompanied by at least a half dozen victories, including a major championship or two, and proclamations of generational stardom.

Instead, Scheffler’s 2023 was defined mainly by what he didn’t do. His two wins should’ve been six. His close calls in majors should’ve yielded at least one victory, and his tightly contested battle with Jon Rahm for Player of the Year should’ve been a runaway race.

See, the world loves to poke holes in greatness and Scheffler had one rather glaring bugaboo that was rightly picked apart: his putting. As invincible as he looked with a driver, iron or wedge in his hands, the cloak dropped when Scheffler stepped on the green. Suddenly, he was human. All the drama shifted from the approach shot to the putt. The exceptional wedge to 5 feet was expected. Whether or not he made the birdie putt became the riveting question. With cameras tightly focused on Scheffler’s putter head, we watched balls veer offline and saw an exasperated Scheffler as the camera panned up. He insisted he was improving and that the fix was not far off, but the stats showed a man without answers.

It came to a head at last year’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, where Scheffler strung together his magnum opus from tee to green, gaining 20.7 strokes on the field, the second-best ball striking performance of anyone in the previous 20 years on the PGA TOUR. Yet he stood on the 18th green down by one shot and watched as his 15-foot birdie to go to a playoff slid by the cup, a familiar sight. He lost more than eight strokes on the greens that week, the worst mark in the field. In a year full of putting disappointment, no shortcoming better encapsulated Scheffler’s season – historically great ball-striking and historically poor putting. As he walked off the green, Jack Nicklaus stopped him and said, “(You) didn't make the putt today, but one day (you’ll) make the putt.”

So, as Scheffler poured in a slippery 5-foot par putt on the 18th to win this year’s Memorial by one over Collin Morikawa, it was a reminder of just how far Scheffler has come, with his putter and his place in the sport.

Scottie Scheffler pars the last to hold on and win the Memorial

Jack was right. This time, the putt went in.

“It was pretty special thinking about that as I was walking over to shake (Jack’s) hand today,” said Scheffler after his final-round 74. “Yeah, it was a fun week.”

Scheffler is displaying domination only a few men – Nicklaus included – have conjured. Everything that seemed possible a year ago, but fell just out of reach, has come true. Scheffler is the commanding force in men’s golf with no sign of slowing down, regardless of off-course circumstances that would have spurned lesser competitors.

Scheffler’s win at Jack’s Place was his fifth of the season, the first to reach the milestone since Justin Thomas in the 2017 season. He is the first to win five times before the U.S. Open since Tom Watson in 1980, and Scheffler enters the year’s third major at Pinehurst No. 2 as the overwhelming favorite. With 3-1 betting odds, Scheffler holds the lowest odds entering a major championship since Tiger Woods at the 2009 PGA Championship.

“It’s not luck and it’s not just a run,” said Tom Kim, close friends with Scheffler. “It’s a consistency that’s unbelievable. He gets better every day. He's Tiger-esque.”

In a matter of three months, Scheffler has gone from one of the best in the world to the unrivaled pinnacle that everyone is chasing. He has won this year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters, the RBC Heritage and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. Winning those five events in a career would deliver a lasting imprint on the sport. Scheffler accomplished it all in one season.

He has done it amidst his fair share of distractions. Some were good, like the birth of his first child, Bennett. Others were worse. He’s dealt with increasing comparisons to titans of the sport, a la Woods and Nicklaus, a pressure that has crushed others through time. Then, there was the incident outside Valhalla Golf Club during the PGA Championship that led to Scheffler’s arrest. Scheffler still finished T8. Then he carded a runner-up at the Charles Schwab Challenge, both while the case was ongoing and as he dealt with the emotions of Grayson Murray’s passing.

Scheffler was undeterred by any of it. His greatness persisted.

“I don't know how he does it,” Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott said. “With what happened at Louisville and then the tragedy with Grayson, that really affected him a lot. So yeah, it's been a whirlwind of emotions for the last month, but sometimes it's probably a safe place to go, you get in contention and you’re just focused on what you’re trying to do and can get away from the noise.”

Scottie Scheffler battles tough course conditions to win the Memorial

His mental toughness has kept Scheffler grounded, though that’s a characteristic the world No. 1 has carried much longer than a few months. The biggest on-course variable that shifted was the putter.

When the struggles popped up last year, Scheffler initially avoided making significant changes. He kept at it with his normal blade putter, utilizing the same drills with Randy Smith that he used since childhood. He contended he was hitting good putts that weren’t falling, but as the struggles accumulated, it became hard to justify that small changes were all that was needed.

“I tried to do my best to block out the noise, but it was tough coming in here every week and having to answer questions about my putting. It's like, listen guys, I'm doing the best I can, I promise,” Scheffler said with a laugh.

Scheffler ranked 161st in Strokes Gained: Putting last season. His struggles were notable to his friends, too.

“I saw a lot of frustration there,” Kim said. “Even in practice, you could just see him grinding on the putting. He's come a long way.”

In September, Scheffler sought the help of putting coach Phil Kenyon, notable given Scheffler had never worked with anyone other than Smith. Kenyon worked with Scheffler on refining his technique and once that was solid and repeatable, they prioritized feeling athletic instead of being robotic. Scheffler won the Hero World Challenge in December, his first stroke-play event alongside Kenyon, but the woes weren’t corrected until February. That’s when Scheffler switched from his blade putter to a mallet. He won four of his next five starts, including THE PLAYERS and the Masters. He's 71st in SG: Putting this season – far from exceptional but plenty good to support his generational tee-to-green statistics.

“I wouldn't trade those weeks that I had back or the year I had last year, just because I felt like I learned a lot about myself and what makes me tick and I think it made me a better player today,” said Scheffler. “A lot of the challenges in this game, I think, can only toughen me up.”

Scottie Scheffler’s interview after winning the Memorial

It was an experience to fall back on during the final round. Scheffler watched as several putts lipped out or just slid by, any of which would have made Sunday’s proceedings smoother. The lead began at four shots, but by the fifth hole, it was just one. Adam Hadwin made three early birdies, and Scheffler bogeyed the fourth. His lead bounced between one and two shots all day long as Hadwin fell down the board, Morikawa charged and Scheffler couldn’t get a putt to drop. But the pivotal swing came on the 16th when Scheffler jarred a 16-foot par putt, and Morikawa missed one of a similar length. That briefly gave Scheffler a two-shot lead. The lead dropped to one after Scheffler bogeyed 17 and Morikawa made par, but the cushion was enough. Both facing short par putts on the 18th, Scheffler stepped up first, knocked down the speedy 5-footer and fist-pumped for the crowd. Morikawa’s putt didn’t matter. It was over.

“He just knocked that ball in like champions do,” Nicklaus said.

A champion many times over.
