An Introduction to the Axarquia

The Axarquia has a natural surrounding of great richness and variety – splendid diversity of  wetland zones, mountain ranges and a place where hundreds of birds pass through during their migration.  It is considered one of the most important locations of Europe for botanic richness.

It’s a region of historic white villages with a distinctive Arabic influence scattered amongst dramatic hills and mountains, and where grape vines, mango, orange, lemon and advocado trees  thrive alongside ancient olive and almond groves.

Wherever you walk you will love the flora, fauna, architecture, spectacular scenery,  history and the warm welcoming people of this corner of Andalucia.

Here’s your perfect opportunity to enjoy a dream holiday walking in Spain

CASPIN JOURNEYS

          A Unique Walking Experience

  Andalucia Walking Tour

Join us on our Andalucia Walking Tour in Spain. An exciting destination that brings together hiking, culture, food and wine! At the crossroads between Christian & Moorish architecture, the beauty of cities like Córdoba, Granada & Sevilla are well known, while the small villages have a charming and quaint feel you will find nowhere else. This plethora of cultures brought with it a wealth of wonderful food - tasty succulent fruits, exotic vegetables, refreshing chilled wine, delicious olive oil, mouth-watering jamon and steaming paella. Hiking in the National Parks of Andalucia is one of the highlights of a lifetime.

  El Espíritu Andaluz

Andalucia is one of the most emblematic destinations in southern Spain. It is a magical place of both rural and urban beauty. There are some truly exciting hiking opportunities to be had. The Sierra Nevada mountain range, Spain’s largest National park looms majestically over the well-loved city of Granada in the west. Further east towards Córdoba is the sleepy and often ignored Sierra Subbética, which was the border between Christian and Moorish Spain for hundreds of years. From its dramatic white hilltop villages with castles and sandy beaches to the mountain tops and lush interiors, Andalucia is a diverse and exciting region to explore.

Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty the region has been defined by its unique location at the crossroads between the Islamic and the Christian worlds. The blend of Moorish and Christian architecture is unique in the world. Nowhere is this more evident than in Córdoba, Granada and Seville. The charming small, white-washed villages of Zuheros, Monachil and Carmona provide the perfect place for quiet exploration and a peek into local Andalusian life.

Andalusian culture is still alive and strong and representative of our romantic idea of Spain. Flamenco, fiestas, guitars, bullfights, tapas and bodegas – a tremendously fun place to go out for an evening stroll, some food and a glass of wine!

Andalucia is the perfect destination to explore on a Caspin Journeys Walking Holiday, where we blend activity and adventure with food, wine and culture!

Day 1 - Arrival in Cordoba & Walking tour

Independent arrival in Córdoba. We start with a guided walking tour of the historic center. We will get an idea of why the city’s star shone so brightly in Roman and Moorish times. As a testimony to this, we enter the incredible and utterly unique Cathedral-Mosque, the city’s main place of worship from the 8th century to this day, and the oldest mosque in Spain. Welcome dinner in one of Córdoba’s excellent restaurants, the city being well-known in Andalucía for its cuisine.

Meals: Dinner

Walk: 2-3 hrs. - City walking tour

Day 2 - Medina Azahara visit with walk - Córdoba

After breakfast we depart for the Medina Azahara archaeological site, a short distance from Córdoba where we see the reconstructed remains of a fabulous 10th century palace city that represented the brief apogee of Córdoba's power and sophistication. We then drive up into the Sierra Morena and hike to a forested area near a water source. After a picnic we return to Córdoba As we stroll to back we can the city skyline dominated by the Cathedral-Mosque from the old Roman bridge.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch

Walk:  1.5 hrs. / 5 km

Day 3 - Sierra Subbética walking day

We travel to a rocky hill top occupied by the hermitage of Virgen de la Sierra which, at 1267m altitude, gives us great views across the Sierra Subbetica Natural Park. The walk is largely descending, through holm oak woods and along the Río Bailón, taking us around 5 hours to reach the white village of Zuheros with its medieval castle keep that overlooks a vast sea of olive trees. At dinner in their village we enjoy a spread of dishes cooked with wonderful local extra virgin olive oil and learn a little about Spanish agriculture and rural life.

Meals: Breakfast / Packed lunch / Dinner

Walk: 5 hrs. / 13 km (feels like 16 km with total descent of 400m)

Day 4 - Moclín - Granada

We pass Moorish period watchtowers and castles from the 13th-15th centuries when this was the Christian frontier with the Muslim sultanate of Granada. We will walk from one such castle, in the village of Moclín, on a delightful circular walk through the valley of the Rio Gollizno which we cross via a hanging bridge. As we climb back up to the town there are superb views of the castle walls and fortifications which, along with a picnic in the shade of pine trees, will reward us for our efforts. We now continue to Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra Palaces (UNESCO).

Meals: Breakfast / Picnic lunch / Dinner

Walk:  4 hrs / 8 km (feels like 12 km)

Day 5 - Granada & Alhambra Palaces Walking tour

We walk through the narrow streets of the old medieval town and into the area known as the Albayzin with its balconies, walls, stairways and hidden courtyards. We are gradually climbing to reach a vista point across the Darro river valley. From here we can see the magnificent Alhambra Palace, one of Europe’s most stunning monuments and perhaps the greatest surviving legacy from over eight centuries of the Moorish presence on the Iberian Peninsula. We now descend and cross the river and wind up a path to reach the Palace and go in with a guide. After a visit which lasts about 2 hours we make our way down through a forest into another neighborhood for a relaxing lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore further independently.

Walk: 4 hrs. / City walking tour incl. Alhambra Palaces

N.B. Wear thick soled shoes for the cobbled streets!

Day 6 - El Torcal - Ronda

W e head east across Andalucía today and visit its geographic centre, the city of Antequera, and its imposing natural motif, the karst limestone plateau of El Torcal. Here wind, rain and erosion have wrought strange patterns in the pillars of rock, creating a myriad of sculptures and shapes. With a local guide we will do a circular walk (4.5km, 3 hours) through this unique landscape where we will see ammonites – a type of fossil which enables scientists to link the rock layer to specific geologic time periods. We are also likely to see many bird species as the area is categorised a “Special Zone for the Protection of Birds”. We end the day in Ronda.

Meals: Breakfast / Picnic Lunch / Dinner

Walk: 3 hrs. / 8 km circular walk over karst limestone moorland with a Park visitor center guide.

Day 7 - Exploring Ronda and the gorge

Known as “The Queen of the White Towns”, Ronda occupies a spectacular position with the two sides of the town straddling a deep chasm which plunges 130m to the Río Guadalevin below. From atop the gorge there are spectacular views over the surrounding hills and valleys that form the “Serranía de Ronda”, a term which is a diminutive of the word for mountain. Morning guided tour of the lovely old town of Ronda which is also home to Spain's second oldest bull ring, the Real Maestranza, followed by a walk into the gorge. Unwind at and enjoy some free time in the afternoon to further explore, shop and relax.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Walk:  4hrs. / 9km / (2 hrs City walking + 2 hrs hiking down and up the gorge +/-300m)

Day 8 - Sierra de Grazalema hike with lunch at a farm

Scenic drive to Grazalema where our trail into the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park begins. We climb up steeply at first to admire sweeping views across the plains of the Cadiz province and the peaks of the Sierras. Our walk then descends more gradually and enters the narrow streets of Grazalema where we make a short stop to take in the atmosphere and beauty of this quintessential Pueblo Blanco (white town).

Walk :  3 hrs / 6km (feels like10 km  with a short steep ascent and a gradual descent +/- 200m)

Day 9 - Jerez de la Frontera, Sherry and Andalucían horses

Jerez de la Frontera, a hidden gem and a charming Andalucian city, known for sherry wine and equestrian arts. We shall experience a delightful blend of authenticity as we wander around its orange-scented, cobbled streets and immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere. In the Central Market vibrant stalls sell fresh produce, local cheeses, and aromatic spices. We can admire the impressive Gothic-Renaissance cathedral and wander around the lively Plaza del Arenal square surrounded by cafés, shops and a tinkling fountain. Now it is time to experience the majesty, grace and power of Andalusian horses at the Royal School as they practice their dressage. Sherry Tasting: You can’t visit Jerez without indulging in it! Sherry gets its distinct earthy aroma from the soil and the humid sea air where the Palomino grapes grow. We shall visit a traditional bodega, learn about the wine making process and then seek out a cozy tavern to eat in and pair the dishes with local wine.

Activities: Sherry Bodega winery & Royal Andalucian Equestrian School visits

Day 10 - Exploring the Doñana National park – Seville & Flamenco.

We head to the Doñana UNESCO biosphere reserve near Sanlúcar de Barrameda. We explore Mount Algaida, one of the largest and most idyllic stone pine forests on the northeast coast of Cádiz. The coast here has rolling sand dunes, long sandy beaches and one of the largest marshy wetlands in Spain, providing a place to rest and nest on the migratory path of birds between Africa and Europe. After a picnic lunch we travel upstream alongside the Guadalquivir river to Seville. There will be free time to explore the streets of the old town. We take in a live performance of Flamenco dancing and singing before dinner.

Walk:  2 hrs/ / 5 km

Day 11 - Half day exploring Seville with a local guide

Today is devoted to Sevilla, the region’s capital and one of Europe’s most captivating cities. Iberians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Visigoths had all left their mark before the Moors established their first capital here. After its conquest by the Castilians in 1248, it became a favoured residence of Spanish kings. We visit the Real Alcazar, still a royal family palace and one of the highlights of our guided walking tour. We will see gothic mansions, churches, convents, and the trading house of The Archive of the Indies which in its day was the epicentre of the trade with the Americas (which, when “discovered” by Columbus, were still thought to be the “Indies”). After exploring the Plaza de España we stop for tapas and then you are free to explore independently.  Before dinner, we will take in a live performance of flamenco, that quintessentially Andalusian art, in a palatial residence dating from the 15th century where the colonnaded patio, its traditional handcraft tiling, the aroma of the flowers, and the trace of almost six centuries of history, create a unique atmosphere.

Meals: Breakfast / Tapas / Dinner

Walk:  3 hrs. - City walking tour

Day 12 - Departure Day

Independent departure at your leisure from Seville. Seville airport is just a 20-minute taxi ride and there are good train links to Madrid.

Guided Countryside Walks and Mountain Hikes Around Nerja & Frigiliana

Walking and Hiking Tours in Andalucía

Exploring the hills, mountains and sierras, and discovering along the way, the hidden country and mountain life of rural andalucía through walking..

Andalucían Walks is a local and community-focused business offering walking and hiking adventures and unique rural experiences in a still strongly traditional part of Andalucía, southern Spain. Andalucían Walks is run entirely by me, Javier. Foreigners and locals alike usually call me Javi. To know a little more about me, have a look at my About page.

On this page you will find a brief introduction to some of the more immediately relevant aspects of Andalucían Walks, such as:

  • the different kinds of walking and hiking tours that I offer
  • my approach to guided walking and hiking
  • the geographical location and a brief description of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park
  • my location in the Natural Park where I work and have fun!
  • the benefits of choosing Nerja and Frigiliana as your base towns for exploring the Natural Park

Rambling and walking through the Spanish Mediterranean’s hills and countryside will surprise and delight you. Most of the walking routes through the coastal foothills and mountain valleys offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean sea and the coastal towns and villages hugging the coastline in the distance. Walking will certainly get you working up a hearty appetite, and in the southern Spanish Mediterranean, good food and eating are never far away. In these parts of Andalucía, many old customs and traditions are still maintained and kept alive as there is still a strong sense of tradition amongst the countryside folk in these rural areas. Come walking with me, in the company of a knowledgeable and local guide, to discover some fascinating and enduring idiosyncrasies, beautiful places, and amazing experiences. The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park is one of the least-explored but most dramatic and spectacular Natural Parks of Andalucía and a yet to be discovered, walking and hiking mecca.

Categories of Walking and Hiking Tours

I run a regular weekly scheduled programme of guided walking tours and hiking excursions into the hills and mountains of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. I offer various categories of escorted walks and hikes of varying levels of difficulty, making my walks and hikes available to, and suitable for, persons of all ages and fitness levels. I offer leisurely strolls through the countryside, moderate walks and cross-country hikes, hikes in the foothills of the sierras, challenging hikes in the high mountains, adventure hikes and treks along ridges and through high mountain passes, and multi-day treks across many ranges and sierras of the Park. I also plan and guide customised walking routes for “adventure walkers” who are looking for that extra special adventure in the mountains. Here is a summary of my guided walking and hiking tours:

Easy, leisurely walks in the coastal plain and low lying areas of Nerja and Maro.

My approach to guided walking and hiking

My approach to accompanying you into the hills and mountains is extremely flexible: just choose a walk from one of the walking/hiking categories that is compatible with your fitness level and abilities, and come and join me. And it really makes no difference to me whatsoever whether or not you might be the only person coming out with me for a walk on a particular day or you form part of group of friendly and enthusiastic walkers. I quite enjoy and often look forward to the quiet company and more personal experience that being with just one or two people brings, as much as I look forward to the often chaotic excitement and challenge of leading large groups of energetic, funny and interesting people!

I can handle a wide range of walkers’ profiles and their requirements, from individual walkers to large travelling groups and walking clubs. The types of situations that I most often accommodate are, but not limited to:

  • individual walkers and couples, on a spontaneous basis, interested in any of the regular scheduled walks or hikes (see walking calendar)
  • small and large groups of walkers (up to 15 people), on a spontaneous basis, interested in any of the regular scheduled walks or hikes (see walking calendar)
  • exclusive private bookings (charter), private family outings, exclusive and customised routes for individuals, couples, small and large groups for either full or half day walking and hiking tours and excursions
  • exclusive and customised walking and hiking day tours for rambling groups and walking clubs
  • exclusive and customised walking and hiking multi-day treks for rambling groups and walking clubs

Description and location of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park

The Natural Park is fringed along its perimeter by many towns and villages, with so much to see and do both within the Park boundaries and outside of it. However, what makes the experience of walking here even more exciting and special is the fact that within the Park’s boundaries there are no inhabited houses – it’s all completely natural and wild! The feeling that you get of knowing that the farther you delve into the mountain wilderness of the Natural Park, the more isolated and remote it becomes, is truly exciting and enticing. It truly is an amazing place.

The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park is replete with dramatic landscapes as a consequence of its geology, with common features such as spectacular, rugged mountains and chiseled peaks; dramatic, fragile, limestone crags; and fast running streams running through deep gorges and mountain valleys. The Park also boasts a riot of flora and fauna, the most prominent being the iconic Iberian ibex; with various species of eagles, falcons and kestrels; wild boar; deer; woodpeckers; vultures; red squirrels; chameleons; badgers; foxes; owls; wild mountain cats; genets; over 40 species of wild orchids; a bewildering array of wildflowers; forests of pines, oaks and yews; and hillsides of Mediterranean aromatic plants, just to mention a few!

Map of Spain showing the relative location of Andalucia.

As ex-pat and local resident of Nerja, Jim Ryan, eloquently stated,

Fascinating towns and villages strategically positioned for high adventure

In the south-eastern region of the Park where Andalucian Walks is located, there are four localities that are closely situated to one another that I use as starting points for my walks.

By far the largest town in the area is Nerja, a somewhat sophisticated but modest tourist resort by Spanish standards. Located about 60 kilometres east of Málaga on the Mediterranean coast, it is far removed from the din of the capital city, Málaga, and is literally the last town on the road before crossing the provincial border into Granada. Nerja has an air of discreet sophistication; its pleasant and modest urban presence will not addle your senses, and its everyday vivaciousness should easily keep you amused and entertained. Nerja is well serviced and has a very good selection of accommodation types and is an excellent choice for positioning oneself for some great walking in the mountains.

Although Nerja is my base town, many of my walks and hikes explore the hills and mountains around the hugely likable, but much smaller, traditional, rural village of Frigiliana. Frigiliana is removed from the urban excitement of Nerja, but has its own peculiar and cute kind of hustle and bustle. It’s one of those few places that will charm your senses and warm your heart, leaving you feeling content with life – and with walking here too!

There are also a number of walking routes and hiking itineraries that I regularly do in the area around this quaint little coastal village called Maro. Maro sits wedged between the mountains and a cliff edge, and appears to be incessantly resisting the efforts of the mountains to push it into the sea. It’s a small, humble and very quiet and charming place. The coastal strip east of Maro is a Natural Park in its own right and offers some interesting coastal walking and an excellent opportunity to spot the iconic Iberian ibex.

I’ve saved the best for last. The unique and exceptional mountain hamlet of Acebuchal is by far the most interesting and intriguing of the four localities. I love this little hamlet. It has a fascinatingly turbulent history, but provides one of the best natural gateways into the Natural Park. A unique place with an air of aloof indifference towards the goings on of the outside, modern world. If you come here, you may find that you soon will begin to adopt this attitude too.

All together, this unusual little group of towns, villages and hamlets form a close and interconnected community in the southern corner of the Park and are well communicated with each other. The hamlet of Acebuchal, for example, depends to a greater or lesser degree on Frigiliana, much in the same way that Frigiliana depends on Nerja for much of its own requirements. Nevertheless, each of the localities has its very own, distinct feel and unique character, and they each offer excellent starting points for a multitude of walks in the area.

The benefits of choosing Nerja and Frigiliana as your base town for exploring the Natural Park

Nerja is without doubt, the best-serviced and most sophisticated resort town east of the provincial capital, Málaga. The southern Mediterranean coast of Spain is in an excellent location for winter and all-year round walking and hiking. I consider Nerja and Frigiliana to be the best bases from which to explore the Natural Park for four main reasons:

  • Nerja and Frigiliana are located in the depths of the Axarquía, a strongly rural and traditionally agricultural region, keeping it somewhat geographically removed and isolated from the influences of modernity of the bigger cities
  • Nerja is strikingly positioned on a narrow strip of elevated coastal lowland, tightly sandwiched between towering peaks of over 1500 metres, and the warm, pristine sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast, thus giving it the enviable recognition of being in a dramatic and spectacular location
  • The excellent Mediterranean climate, with mild diurnal and nocturnal winter temperatures and almost guaranteed winter sunshine, make Nerja and Frigiliana, and its outlying cohorts, a prime winter walking destination and possibly the best winter walking destination in all of Europe
  • Nerja on its own is a first-class tourist resort, having an extensive range of quality urban and rural accommodation, not to mention a complete and comprehensive range of services and activities to offer the discerning travelling adventurer.

Walking Tours in Andalucia, Spain

Andalucia, southern spain., 11 nights, plus an optional 5 nights in nerja, beside the glittering mediterranean..

2024 dates: May 4th – 20th (including the 5 night Nerja option).

Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park – and La Axarquía.

walking tours in andalucia spain

The area is well known for its whitewashed Moorish villages, which often cling to the hillsides; however not so many visitors penetrate the deep interior of La Axarquía and connect with an ancient way of life, as we surely will. At the end of the 11 days, you’ll optionally spend a few extra nights in a nice coastal hotel in the beautiful old seaside town of Nerja, where you might relax after some 11 days spent hiking and experiencing local culture in the hills. From Nerja, we will take a day trip to see the famous Moorish Palace of “The Alhambra” in Granada.

Until a few decades ago, the Axarquía region of Andalucía was little known. Then, northern European expatriates discovered a few of the pretty hilltop villages and and started buying up some of the run-down ‘Fincas’ and farmhouses in the area. One such Englishman (Cornish in fact!) is my friend Edward and he has restored a beautiful hamlet of Casitas near the town of Periana. Our tour will be based there for the first 7 nights – with its fine restaurant and swimming pool.

walking tours in andalucia spain

The main attractions are the area’s dramatic hill and mountain scenery, its unspoiled white washed villages and the strong sweet wine that is made from sun dried grapes. Because of the region’s sub-tropical climate, this is also a region where some of the more tropical fruits, such as mango and kiwi are grown. Olive oil production is also very important in the whole region. Average shade temperatures in May are often above 20C (68F) and the sunshine is beautifully warm.

walking tours in andalucia spain

As per usual, I have again chosen to work with a local guide on this holiday and over the past few years I have become good very friends with Javier Sanchez (first photo) who will be our companion throughout. Like myself, Javier is passionate about discovering the hidden meaning of a landscape and its people and he will share with you what he has shared with me over four visits to the region since we first met. I believe that it’s so important to involve local people when exploring any area and with Javier, you will not be disappointed, as he has worked tirelessly over many years to uncover the DNA of the region and what makes its people tick. I have spent many weeks with him over the past few years, exploring and generally allowing him to share with me what is so special in this region. His passion is much like mine in Cornwall!

Like most of our holidays, this will be a fully inclusive tour and apart from the odd coffee and beer, etc – you will not need to put your hand into your pocket that much. All accommodations, meals and activities will be included (apart from visits to The Mezquita in Cordoba and The Alhambra in Granada and any optional days in Nerja) and we will enjoy picnic lunches on some hiking days and restaurant lunches on other days. Transport during the tour will be provided and collection and drop off at Malaga airport will be included on the whole. The cost of this 11 night fully inclusive tour (with wine) is £2,700 with no single room supplement payable (for a change!).

If the 5 night Nerja option is added, this will be an additional cost to be paid for at the time, directly. I can however make the necessary reservations. Those who did take this opportunity last year found the extra days spent in Nerja very pleasant and an excellent way to wind down before going home.

Things to know

Virginia Woolf was hit with a wave of inspiration as soon as she set foot in Andalucia—where she reaped the inspo for her most famous novel. Following her footsteps, you’ll visit the sun-kissed Alpujarras to discover the hidden parts of Southern Spain. Hiking through the dreamy, unspoiled countryside, you’ll reach the forgotten white village of Yegen. Once an artistic refuge, it will serve as your base for serene siestas and loud fiestas, revelatory walks and engaging talks. But this 7-day all-women adventure offers so much more! Before experiencing the meditative side of Andalucia in the Alpujarras, you’ll soak in some good old Mediterranean buzz in Granada. And after all the hikes through terraced farmlands, walks among ornate arches, and balmy evenings made for telling stories, you’re bound to learn the Spanish joy of life.

Follow the footsteps of Virginia Woolf and other artists in seldom visited parts of Spain

Combine a city break and a serene hiking trip in the Andalucian countryside

Time for siestas and fiestas, great food, and lifelong memories under the blue skies

walking tours in andalucia spain

Your week-long hiking trip in Southern Spain is based on Virginia Woolf’s 1923 visit to Granada and Yegen—a white village in the Alpujarras that became a refuge for important British writers and artists in the 1920s. This all-inclusive walking holiday gives you a chance to experience both the adventurous and the meditative side of Andalucia with a superb local guide and other venturesome women. Get ready for literary pleasures, sun-drenched days spent hiking, afternoon siestas, and evening fiestas—Spain awaits you open-armed!

Arrive in Malaga by 3 pm, where your guide will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in the center of Granada. Granada was also Virginia Woolf’s first stop during her trip to Spain in 1923. Make yourself comfortable in your room and head for a welcome dinner with your Andalucia tour guide and fellow hikers in the nearby restaurant. During your meal, you’ll get to know your group and discuss the details of your itinerary. Soak in the atmosphere of the bustling streets before a good night’s sleep in your hotel. Your Granada and Alpujarras guided tour has begun! Meals: Dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room at Monjas del Carmen Hotel

An alley in Granada looking over typical white houses and a church.

After a delicious breakfast, head to the streets of Granada. Today your group will explore the neighborhoods of Sacromonte and Albaicin with impressive views over the Alhambra, arguably the most impressive monument of Islamic architecture in the world, built during the Islamic medieval rule over this part of Spain. If you want to go inside the palace, make sure to book your ticket well in advance (your guide can help you with that). Spend the rest of the day according to your interests and enjoy a delicious meal with the rest of the group in the evening. Meals: Breakfast and dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room at Monjas del Carmen Hotel

Courtyard with ornate arches in the Alhambra Palace, Granada.

After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to take the bus to Yegen, a beautiful white hamlet in the region of the Alpujarras. Observe the change from the hustle and bustle to sun-drenched slopes of the Andalusian countryside. Once you arrive in Yegen, settle in your comfortable and traditional accommodation in the village. Get to know your surroundings and discover why the British author Gerald Brenan chose this place to be his artistic refuge—before enjoying your dinner with your group. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room at El Rincón de Yegen

The white village of Yegen in the Alpujarras region of Andalucia, Spain.

After breakfast, it’s time to get a more in-depth experience of the dreamy village you’ll call home for the next couple of days. Visit Gerald Brenan’s house-museum, where Virginia Woolf (and her husband Leonard) spent 15 days. Afterward, your group will walk along the Gerald Brenan trail, following the footsteps of not only Woolf, but also the painter Dora Carrington and the writer Lytton Strachey (all members of the influential Bloomsbury group). Get inspired as you take in impressive views over arid slopes and the surreal village of Yegen (as seen from the distance). Return to your base and spend another peaceful summer evening in the great company (and surroundings). Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room at El Rincón de Yegen Hiking: 2.5 km (1.5 miles), 2.5 hours of walking

Typical white houses with balconies featuring flowers in the village of Yegen, Spain.

Today you’re walking along the GR-7 , where you’ll cross homeland of Aben Aboo, the last Moorish king of Andalucia. Departing from Yegen, you’ll reach Montenegro, a charming hamlet with only several inhabitants and farm houses and a chapel. Continue walking to El Golco, another white village, where you’ll spend the night. Meals: Breakfast and dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room Hiking: 6-7 km (4-4.5 miles)

Today’s walk is along the “path of health,” a collage of streams, woods with ancient trees, and scenic views. Return back to your base, celebrate the end of your Spanish escapade with fellow travelers and your guide and recap what you’ve learned and experienced during this week to remember. Tomorrow marks the end of your guided adventure in Andalucia. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Accommodation: Ensuite single room at El Rincón de Yegen Hiking: 5 km (3 miles), 2-3 hours

After breakfast, take a group transfer to Malaga or Granada for return flights around 10 am. Say goodbye to your new friends, your guide and to Spain—or continue touring on your own in Malaga or somewhere else (ask your guide for recommendations!) Meals: Breakfast

Fortunate to of experienced 4 or 5 trips with walking women. Love the diversity of trips, the choices, ability to spend time within the group of extraordinary women or time independently. Nothing is missed, such a treat to have everything planned for you. Would highly recommend to all.

From the little I have experienced on my holiday with WW, I can see people and places are carefully selected, and held to a high standard with prices that remain almost affordable for all; curated to make the guest at ease at all times wether in the intinerary of the walks or the destination hotel/B&B stay. As a solo traveler I’m only sorry I didnt discover it sooner 🙂

Been on a couple of walking women holidays, never been disappointed. Friendly knowledgable guides, really lovely walks and lots of fun

My first walking holiday and was pleased I kept up. The weather was fine so scenery was great. The accomodation was comfortable and the food provided plentiful and tasty. Group gelled together and guide Chrissy always on hand to assist.

Hiking trails

Hiking trails

Andalusia is best discovered on foot. Enjoy it step by step, without haste, taking advantage of the extensive network of trails , all signposted and standardised , connecting and linking the territory, displaying its very heart and giving up its most hidden secrets. Access unexpected, uniquely beautiful places, landscapes and little corners. Meet the locals, exploring their history, culture, customs and traditions. Savour the region's best fruit and cuisine, both from traditional wood-burning stoves and the most innovative gastronomy. Observe how the different seasons bring changes in the colours and light, aromas and sounds, sensations and shadows that adorn the route and make it unforgettable.

Andalusia meets all the requirements and offers the best conditions for hiking. How To Get Ready For The Best Hikes In Andalucia

woman preparing her backpack for the best hikes in andalucia.

If you’re looking to get out amongst nature then hiking in Andalucia is a great option for doing precisely this.

There are, however, a few things to bear in mind when preparing for any hiking excursion.

Firstly, Andalucia gets incredibly hot in the summer months. Therefore, always exercise caution when attempting hikes, especially the more challenging ones at this time of year.

It’s possibly best not to even consider many of these options during this period.

You’ll also need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear when undertaking even the easiest of hikes in the region.

Also, ensure that you take along water and sunscreen (plus a good map or GPS for more off-the-beaten-path hikes).

While many of the hikes we’ve looked at are open around the clock, don’t attempt them outside of daylight hours as you can end up in a whole world of trouble if you’re trapped out in the wilds overnight.

One thing you must always do is factor in plenty of time to complete your hike during daylight hours, as many trails can become hazardous after dark.

Should you require rescuing, you are likely to be hit with a heavy bill so don’t let that person be you!

With a undeniable lust for life, the region of Andalucia is home to over 3000 fiestas every year from carnivals, to religious processions to dance festivals. Here are some of the most exciting "ferias" to witness in Andalucia.

Semana Santa -  otherwise known as Holy Week transforms towns across Andalucia between the Sunday before Easter Sunday (Palm Sunday) to Good Friday/Easter Saturday. The highlight of Semana Santa celebrations are colourful processions with beautifully decorated floats featuring images of Jesus Christ and other religious icons, accompanied by Nazarenos dressed in distinctive robes and capes carrying candles.

Feria de Abril -  colourful at the best of times, Seville really comes alive during this very popular festival also known as the "world's most colourful party" which generally takes place two weeks after Holy Week. Over seven days you will see  sevillanas  (a traditional local dance with the brightest costumes), eat  pescaito frito ( fried fish) from food stands, and enjoy the city being lit by thousands of lanterns. It culminates in a spectacular firework display.  This is definitely a festival where you will eat, drink and be merry!

Malaga Carnival -  similar to the Feria de Abril, this is a smaller scale version which you may wish to visit if flying into Malaga. Expect lots of flamenco and lots of sherry! Dates are changing every year but usually begins the week before Shrove Tuesday and lasts around 4 weeks.

Corpus Christi -  the largest festival in Granada, this week-long event celebrates the presence of the body of Christ in holy water. You can witness puppet shows, processions, concerts, bullfighting and flamenco and it usually takes place 60 days after Easter Sunday.

Feria del Caballo -  traditionally held in the first or second week in May, this lively festival brings together the finest horses of Jerez in a 52,000m fairground. V arious equine events take place throughout the week such as carriage driving,  doma vaquera  (traditional working horse discipline) and  acoso y derribo  (rounding up of cattle). And a very colourful horse and carriage procession takes place every day!

Whatever festival you see in Andalucia, be sure there will be plenty of polka-dot dresses,  cervecitas and sherry overflowing, lots of laughter, songs and dancing!

Fiestas of Andalucia

With  Moorish, Roman, and Greek influences, the region of Andalucia has a complex history, which is part of the reason it is such a fascinating part of Spain to explore.

Early beginnings -  dating back to around 8000BC, North African tribes (now known as Iberians) established farming settlements throughout Andalucia. The Phoenician traders (who originated from Southern Syria, Lebanon and Northern Israel) established the sea port of Cadiz in around 1100BC and led to the emergence of many cities on the Andalucian coast. The Phoenicians were followed by the Greeks and Carthaginians (hailing from Tunisia) who monopolised Western Mediterranean trading routes.

The Romans -  from around the 3rd century BC, Roman legions appeared in Andalucia and would remain for nearly 700 years. Betis (Andalucia) was one of Rome's richest colonies, exporting olive oil and wine via the  Guadalquivir river, Andalucia's main river and it is where Roman emperors Trajan and Hadrian were born. Under Roman rule, Spain became a Christian country. The Roman Empire eventually collapsed following invasion from a barbaric tribe, the Visigoths.

The Moors -  Islamic warriors invaded Spain in the year 711 and called the region Al-Andalus. Islam became dominant and  The Moors spread their cultural legacy, evident in places such as the Alhambra in Granada and Mezquita (Great Mosque) of Cordoba They led the region for 8 centuries and the Andalucian cities of Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada and Cádiz were recognised throughout Europe as centres of great learning, renowned for impressive art and architecture, and homes to prestigious scientists and philosophers. They also created sophisticated irrigation systems, and many  pueblos blancos.

Reconquest -   In the the 13th century, Christian reconquest reached Andalucia and by the end of the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon, had taken the last stronghold of the Moors, Granada and the Alhambra Palace, and Columbus set sail from Andalucian port, Huelva, to discover America in 1492.

Historical influences of Andalucia

As well as a plethora of beautiful natural landscapes in which it is a pleasure to walk and cycle in, Andalucia has plenty of stunning cities to spend time exploring! Here are just a few...

Granada -  probably the most famous city in Andalucia and for good reason! Visit the iconic Arabic palace, The Alhambra, wander through the old Arab neighbourhood of Albaicin with its souk-style market or marvel at it's amazing location with wonderful views at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Ronda - Most famous for the 200m chasm of the El Tajo gorge which divides the town in two. The 18th century Puente Nuevo, 'new' bridge, offers some of the best views. The historical Moorish quarter is especially interesting, although you are sure to discover many more delights as you wander the streets.

Seville -  Explore The Alcázar of Seville, the oldest Royal Palace in Europe with its beautiful Moorish courtyards, fountains and gardens before heading to the Cathedral, the largest gothic Cathedral in the world and home to the historic tomb of Christopher Columbus. Seville is also home of Flamenco, so be sure to try and catch a show at one of the many flamenco bars.

Cordoba -  Whilst none of our tours visit Cordoba - at the moment! - it is really worth visiting if you are in Andalucia as part of a longer trip! Highlights include the Mezquita (Mosque-Cathedral) with its fascinating history of being a mosque or cathedral depending on who ruled the city, the iconic Roman bridge over the Guadalquivir  river and the medieval palace of Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos.

Jerez de la Frontera -  this vibrant city is the  heart of Spain’s sherry wine country.  Bursting with Andalusian charm, Jerez’s streets are peppered with scores of Sherry Bodegas, including the famous ‘Tio Pepe’ and ‘La Ina’ which both provide daily tasting experiences for around €10 per person. Later into the evening, discover the age-old tapas bars serving plates of local alchahofas, rabo de toro and espárrago.

Cadiz -  the oldest settlement in Spain, this ancient port city offers over 3000 years of history.  The old town of Cadiz remains much as it was during the 18th century ‘Golden-Era’ with sailor’s alleyways, grand plazas and turreted houses.

If you've ever seen the movie El Cid , you know that the Moors invaded Iberia then the Spanish chased them out. Of course, that took almost 800 years—and in the process created Europe's richest and most fascinating culture. Seville is the suavest of cities. The Alhambra? The way water in all its variety is used to cool air that whispers through beautiful stone fretwork is unimaginable. The vastness of la vega, the province's plain, is truly cinematic, scattered with whitewashed villages, punctuated by ruined alcazares (fortresses), and carpeted in vineyards, swatches of gnarled olive trees and stately groves of poplar. We stay in fantastic accommodations and at one of Spain's finest 5-star hotels. And the walks—in both city and country, through mosques and Spanish palaces—are gentle revelations every step of the way. Our local guides are exceptionally well-connected, so you get introductions to families that own the olive groves and even Alhambra's resident wood inlay expert. Can you tell Andalucia is one of our favorite places on earth?

  • Meet in Seville for a leisurely stroll that takes in King Ferdinand's Alcazar and the chic shopping district.
  • Journey into the Andalucian countryside to walk among green hills to one of Los Pueblos Blancos ("the white villages").
  • Explore the clifftop town of Ronda, perched high above the Tajo Gorge.
  • Walk the banks of a lovely river and enjoy a wine tasting at a vineyard where the buildings date back to the 16th century.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for a large colony of flamingos on a walk amid the natural pillars of El Torcal National Park.
  • Join a local friend from Granada for a personally guided visit to the Alhambra and shopping in the alcaizeria.
  • Walk in fragrant forests and visit a traditional olive oil mill before arriving in Córdoba where visits include the elaborate Mesquita (mosque).
  • Marvel at an up-close flamenco performance you'll never forget.

Why Choose Classic Journeys

Travel + Leisure has awarded Classic Journeys the #1 World’s Best Tour Operator multiple times and says, "Classic Journeys provides unbeatable access to experiences around the globe." Here’s what that access means for you.

  • Experience the world on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region.
  • Exceptional full-time local guides who become your well-connected friend. Our amazing guides are with you throughout each day of the tour, share their lifelong connections as well as engaging anecdotes about the history and culture of the region.
  • Small groups that provide you unrivaled access. An average of fewer than 10 guests per departure means we can offer you special access to sites like Stonehenge so you experience the stone circle when it’s closed to the general public, a guided visit to Zion Narrows that other companies cannot arrange because of larger group sizes, and vineyard walks with a count and countess in Tuscany.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in the region you’re exploring, including rainforest lodges, 16th century villas, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From gourmet picnics to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know our walking tour regions more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Sustainable travel that supports the places you’re visiting. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.
