Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The Romulan Warbird You Need To Know

The D'deridex-class Romulan warbird: Star Trek's not-so-jolly green giant.

Star Trek The Next Generation Romulan Warbird

Following the disaster that was the Ferengi's introduction as the big new baddies in the "The Last Outpost", the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation turned to The Original Series for their next shot at giving Picard and the crew of the Enteprirse-D a real foe.

While the Romulans had been rejected as adversaries in the relatively recent Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, they finally managed to return as threats to the Federation in "The Neutral Zone". Along with a revamped makeup application by Michael Westmore, some big shoulders by costume designer William Ware Theiss, and a menacing portrayal by future Gul Dukat Marc Alaimo, the Romulans were also granted a distinctive and imposing new vessel, the D'deridex-class Romulan warbird.

Loosely based on the Romulan Bird-of-Prey from TOS, the Romulan warbird was designed by Andrew Probert and was instantly one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most recognizable ships. This double-hulled, stately yet predatory new vessel would serve as the Romulans' primary mode of transportation (and intimidation) throughout the fictional 24th century, showing up in both Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and making two surprise appearances in Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Fitting the enigmatic and suspicious nature of the Romulans, not much detail is given about their ships on screen, but we're here to scan through the cloaking device to bring you ten secrets of the Romulan warbird the Romulans definitely don't want you to know.

10. Axis Of Evil

Star Trek The Next Generation Romulan Warbird

His last assignment on Star Trek: The Next Generation after spearheading the designs of the Enterprise-D, the Tarellian ship (from "Haven"), and the Ferengi Marauder, Andrew Probert sought to rethink starship configurations in the Star Trek Universe with the Romulan warbird.

According to Probert, Gene Roddenberry had dictated that all starships in the franchise have two warp engines working in tandem, but never specified whether or not those engines had to be situated on the horizontal axis. Keeping the basic shape of the new ship rooted in the appropriately bird-like configuration of TOS' Romulan Bird-of-Prey, Probert opted to place the warbird's engines at the top and bottom of its primary hull.

The proposed design was a radical departure from previous Star Trek vessels and, as Probert saw it, a nice contrast to the very wide USS Enterprise-D:

I didn't have any information except that the Romulans were coming back and that we had never seen their ship before. Since the Enterprise is so horizontal, I wanted to contrast it with a vertical ship.

To Probert's disappointment, however, the producers requested the ship's alignment be corrected and a more traditional, horizontal configuration was further developed.

Probert ultimately left TNG following season one and his work on the Romulan warbird, but later returned to the franchise to provide illustrations for the Ships of the Line Calendars, reworking and fleshing out his vertical Romulan warbird for the 2011 edition.

Inside the Romulan Warbird Valdore

warbird fliers in star trek

The pinnacle of Romulan starship evolution in the late 24th Century, the Romulan Warbird Valdore was a sleek, powerful and intimidating hunter that would keep their already-mighty fleet a force to be reckoned with. Ironically, who would figure that two of these ships would help save the Romulan Star Empire, as well as one of their most hated enemies, the Federation?

The Valdore Namesake

warbird fliers in star trek

The Valdore can trace its history all the way back to the 2150’s. In a plot to engulf the quadrant in war, Admiral Valdore was the mastermind behind another Romulan warship. Converting two contemporary warbirds into drone ships, he used multispectral holographic emitters and triphasic disruptors to give the ships the ability to disguise themselves as other vessels. With the flip of a switch, the tiny drone was suddenly a Tellarite cruiser, an Andorian Kumari class, or even the Starfleet’s Enterprise NX-01 . The Romulans used this deception to cause chaos amongst the other powers by provoking old rivalries and attempting to start new ones. Admiral Valdore used an Aenar, a blind Andorian with extraordinary mental powers, to control the drone ships from the safety of a facility on Romulus. ( ENT: “ Babel One ,” “ United ,” and “ The Aenar .”)

The drones had extraordinary maneuverability and firepower for ships of their size. Despite this, they were eventually defeated by a combined alliance led by the Enterprise NX-01 . Ironically, the chaos and war the Romulans hoped to start helped pave the way for the Federation. Admiral Valdore failed in his gambit. Nevertheless, he was still remembered in the Romulan Empire with the namesake of this 24th-century warbird.

24th-Century Romulan Innovation

At 603 meters in length, the Valdore was not a small vessel. Its sleek design carried familiar characteristics that were a staple of Romulan design. The feather-like patterns that adorned the hull could trace their lineage back to the 22nd-century Romulan Bird of Prey , as well as the 23rd. The previous warbird, the D’deridex Class, featured a similar outstretched neck with large wings containing warp nacelles at their edge. The D’deridex however, featured a bottom wing span with a large open space in between the two halves. The Valdore streamlined that design into a much leaner and sharper swooping bird.

The ship sported disruptor cannons and torpedoes for weapons with implacements all over the hull. It also featured a cloaking device, which had been a key piece of technology for the Romulans for more than 100 years. Unfortunately, the Treaty of Algeron prevented the Federation from using or even researching cloaking technology. This would leave them at a significant disadvantage for many years. But, of course, there are always those who ignore the rules.

The Valdore was a dark green color, typical of Romulan vessels. However, a brown version also exists. Whether that is a base materials difference, another type/mission-specific ship, or is simply an aesthetic choice by the shipyard or designer is unknown at this time. Nevertheless, it is worth noting.

In a glass, darkly...

warbird fliers in star trek

The Valdore , along with another ship of its type, took part in a battle that could have led to the end of both the Romulan Empire and the Federation. Shinzon of Remus instigated a takeover of the Senate by eliminating those who opposed him with the use of a thalaron radiation device. Thalaron radiation destroys all organic matter within seconds, and he would choose to make this technology the basis for his flagship, the Reman warbird Scimitar .

Shinzon was a human, a clone of Federation Captain Jean-Luc Picard, that the Romulans created in the hopes of replacing the real Picard with their agent clone. Ultimately, the plan was cancelled and he was sent to the slave mines on Remus. The Remans took him in as one of their own, identifying with him as another being cast away by the Romulan Star Empire, forced against his will to mine for the Romulans.

Shinzon somehow managed to gain considerable power, despite his rough youth. The Scimitar was constructed at a secret base without the knowledge of the Romulans. He plotted his revenge carefully, also setting his sights on Captain Picard, wanting to make his own mark on the face of the galaxy. He lured the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E to Romulus under the guise of peace talks, only to spring his trap shortly thereafter. The Enterprise narrowly escaped and attempted to rendezvous with a fleet that could stop Shinzon and the Scimitar from laying waste to the Federation. The Enterprise would never reach them.

The enemy of my enemy…

Fortunately for the Romulans and Federation, one of Shinzon’s co-conspirators had second thoughts. Commander Donatra, who had originally supported Shinzon’s coup, turned when she learned of the thalaron weapon and the devastation it could cause.

Shinzon followed the Enterprise and found the perfect spot for an ambush inside a nebula. This cut off all contact with the waiting Federation fleet and the Enterprise was nearly crippled. Commander Donatra, commanding the Valdore, caught up. They were joined with another Valdore-type ship and the odds seemed more in the Enterprise ’s favor.

warbird fliers in star trek

Another key component of the Scimitar was its ability to fire with its perfect cloak. The only way for the Enterprise or Valdore to find the Scimitar was to fire blindly and hope the weapons fire would make contact. The group managed to get a few hits on the Scimitar before it nearly obliterated the other Valdore-type ship, blasting off one of its wings. The fierce battle continued and it looked like the Enterprise and Valdore had damaged the Scimitar. Unfortunately for them, Shinzon feigned a cloak failure in order to lure in the Valdore and hit them in their vulnerable ventral section. The Valdore was out for the count, but Commander Donatra and some of her crew survived.

The Enterprise continued the fight to an old-fashioned showdown. Picard gambled that Shinzon would predict how he would react and Shinzon failed to consider ramming speed.” Shinzon panicked, but it was too late. The Enterprise collided with the Scimitar, locking the two ships together. In the end, only with the heroic self-sacrifice of humanoid android Lt. Commander Data, was Shinzon and his twisted plot for revenge finally stopped.

Commander Donatra and the crew of the Valdore rendered aid and assistance via shuttlecraft to the very crippled Enterprise , giving hope to real peace one day. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

The Great Bird of the Empire

warbird fliers in star trek

The Valdore only appeared on screen one time, in Star Trek Nemesis . Its outstanding design and look are the work of Trek veteran John Eaves. Hopefully, sometime in the future, the Valdore will return as friend or foe to fight for the Romulan Star Empire once again.

Legacy of Romulus - Warbirds

Warbirds – the backbone of the Romulan military.

Malem Light Warbird - Plasma Weaponry

Romulan Republic 's weapon of choice is Plasma .

The Romulan Star Empire has long been one of the dominant powers in the Alpha Quadrant . Boasting unparalleled cloaking technology, powerful Plasma and Disruptor weaponry, and the resourcefulness to quickly develop countermeasures for the tactics of other factions, Romulans were a key force in many conflicts since the 2150s.

Warbirds – the most iconic of Romulan vessels – have formed the backbone of the Romulan military for centuries. With the destruction of Romulus , these Warbirds have become a lasting symbol of the once mighty empire’s strength – as well as a new home for some of the many refugees in the wake of their planet’s destruction.

With an emphasis on the tactical use of potent abilities stemming from advanced Romulan technology, Romulan Warbirds are built to fight like the Romulans themselves – with a high risk and high reward style.

Romulans are masters of Cloaking technology, and all Warbirds are equipped with a Battle Cloak . In addition, Romulan and Reman racial traits also improve ship's cloaking capabilities:

Some Romulan Warbirds, such as T'varo Light Warbird Retrofit (T5) , T'liss Temporal Warbird (T6) and Faeht Intel Warbird (T6) , come with a built in Enhanced Battle Cloak , allowing them to fire torpedoes and launch mines while under cloak.

Similar to Klingon starships, all Warbirds can equip Dual Cannons.

Unlike Federation and Klingon Defense Force vessels, Romulan Warbirds are powered by a unique Singularity Warp Core . The Singularity Warp Core can build power as the Romulan ship engages in combat, and then utilize this power to produce one of several devastating effects on the battlefield. As an added consequence of their unique Warp Core, Warbirds create a deadly Singularity implosion when they are destroyed.

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Romulan Warbird

The script of “The Neutral Zone” merely called for a “Romulan cruiser,” but — coming on the heels of the disappointing introduction of the Ferengi — the makers of Star Trek: The Next Generation wanted to make a strong impression with the return of the Romulans. Their new Warbird had to look menacing.

Andrew Probert, who was about to leave the show after one season, told Trek Brasilis in 2001 that his starting point for the Warbird (the name “ D’deridex class” wasn’t mentioned until “Tin Man”) were the Romulan Bird of Prey and Klingon/Romulan D7 battle cruiser from The Original Series .

I started with bird and bird wing shapes. And eventually came to a design similar to what is on the screen.

Romulan Warbird concept art

Probert proposed a vertical configuration to create a contrast with the horizontal Enterprise , but this idea was rejected. Probert had a chance to revisit this design for the 2011 Ships of the Line calendar.

Tilting his sketches a quarter gave Probert something close to the final design. He considered giving the Warbird only a top wing, and leaving the bottom open, but was happier with a closed loop.

There needed to be open space between the nacelles, he explained. Gene Roddenberry had dictated that every starship had two nacelles, from which Probert deduced that nacelles worked in pairs (hence the Stargazer got four) and needed to be able to reach each other to create a warp field.

In other words, there would be no obstructions between the engines to disrupt the energy fields or connecting forces between them.

Greg Jein recalled in an interview in 2002 that he enjoyed building the miniature “because it was such an unusual shape.”

We had to carve that out of flores foam and we vacuformed on top of that, and we take the foam out, so we had a hard shell, so we could put the armatures and lights in.

A second model was built during Season 3, which debuted in “The Defector”. The main difference from the original was that the new model had more lighted windows. Jein’s team also added detail to the outside of the nacelles.

The first model was painted green and the second a blue-grey, creating some confusion about the “real” color of the Warbird, but on screen it was always lighted green.

Foundation Imaging created a CGI version for the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Message in a Bottle,” which was from that time on used by Deep Space Nine as well.

History [ ]

The Scimitar class was the culmination of a Romulan development program to create a powerful new class to utilise against the Dominion . ( TOS novel : Captain's Blood )

800px-Scimitar Warbird

A Scimitar -class warbird.

The design included a revolutionary thalaron radiation core, developed by the Tal Shiar , making it a deadly adversary. ( DS9 - Tales of the Dominion War short story : " Twilight's Wrath ")

Only one vessel of the class was completed as the necessity for such a super-weapon disappeared following the end of the Dominion War . That vessel, the Scimitar , was under the control of Shinzon of Remus , and he used it to destroy the remaining unfinished Scimitar -class vessels to make sure no one could oppose him. ( TOS novel : Captain's Blood )

The Scimitar herself was later destroyed when Lieutenant Commander Data of the USS Enterprise -E fired a phaser into the vessel's thalaron core to prevent the weapon from being used to kill his shipmates. ( TNG movie & novelization : Nemesis )

Tulwar Warbird

A Tulwar -class variant.

By the 2400s Scimitar -class vessels were in use as a dreadnought by both the Romulan Star Empire and some groups of Reman rebels , the latter including the Reman Resistance under Obisek . In 2409 the Romulan Republic also developed two variant classes, designated the Falchion and Tulwar -subclasses . ( ST video games : Star Trek Online , Legacy of Romulus )

A year later, the Romulan Republic launched a new line of Scimitar -derived ships, with a distinctly Romulan appearance. ( Star Trek Online news )

Features [ ]

Scimitar -class warbirds are huge, but even for their size, they have an unusually high amount of weaponry: 52 disruptor banks and 27 photon torpedo tubes. In addition, the class features at least one huge shuttle bay which can hold in excess of 40 Scorpion -class fighters . The class is also fitted with an advanced cloaking device which is undetectable by any previously known means and can also be operated whilst maintaining full shields and firing weapons.

The most notable feature of the Scimitar class are the thalaron cores. Scimitar -class vessels are able to create a thalaron discharge which could wipe out all organic tissue on a target ranging from a starship to a planet . To fire the weapon, the ship must splay its wings into a firing position; this takes several minutes, during which time the thalaron radiation is built up from the core. ( TNG movie & novelization : Nemesis )

By 2387 , this design had set the standard for other classes of Reman vessels, though it is very likely that they lacked the thalaron generator the Scimitar possessed. ( ST comic : " Countdown ")

The Untold Story Behind The Next Generation’s Reimagined Romulan Warbird

W hen “The Neutral Zone” episode aired on May 16, 1988, audiences anticipated the return of the Romulans, a formidable species not seen since the original Star Trek series. The ship that was to represent this enigmatic alien race underwent a significant redesign process led by Andrew Probert, who undertook the challenge to conceive a Romulan ship with a unique aesthetic contrasting the USS Enterprise-D.

Observing that the Enterprise-D had a broad, horizontal profile, Probert was inspired to create a ship that differed dramatically, choosing to focus on a vertical design language. As Probert explained:

“I didn’t have any information except that the Romulans were coming back and that we had never seen their ship before. […] Since the Enterprise is so horizontal, I wanted to contrast it with a vertical ship.”

His innovative ideas brought forth a concept in which the command center resembled a “sideways burger” with an enormous, vertically aligned elliptical ring. Images of these early designs can be viewed here .

However, the unconventional verticality of Probert’s design raised concerns among Star Trek producers, who pushed for a more traditional horizontal format that aligned with the franchise’s ship design ethos. In response, Probert re-envisioned the Romulan vessel with a bird-like silhouette that, in its early incarnations, lacked a “bottom wing” and resembled a bird in flight, as seen in this concept art .

After several modifications, the final design introduced a lower wing structure, and the preliminary look of the Warbird came into focus. The design evolution can be followed with this image of a subsequent design stage .

FAQ Section

Why was the original Romulan Warbird design never used in The Next Generation?

The original vertical design by Andrew Probert was deemed too unconventional by the producers, who preferred a more horizontal orientation that aligned with the existing Star Trek spaceship aesthetic.

What was the key inspiration behind Andrew Probert’s initial Romulan ship design?

Probert aimed to contrast the design of the Romulan ship with that of the Enterprise-D, which was very horizontal. He wanted the Romulan ship to stand out with a unique vertical orientation.

Where can I see Andrew Probert’s initial and subsequent designs for the Romulan Warbird?

You can view the early and later concept art for the Romulan Warbird at the Forgotten Trek website, which showcases various designs stages through provided links.

The creative process behind the Romulan Warbird in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” showcases the complex interplay between innovative design ideas and the necessity to maintain a coherent visual language within an established universe. Andrew Probert’s original vertically-oriented design may have been striking, but it was the collaborative evolution of the concept that ultimately resulted in the Warbird fans came to recognize in the series. This design iteration reflects the careful consideration required to balance novelty with the expectations of a legacy sci-fi franchise.

The "Romulan vessel" on the cover of its own magazine

Lacking a formal designation in canon , these ships were identified as "warbirds" on storyboards, as shown in the The Ready Room episode for " Absolute Candor ", [1] but were simply designated as "Romulan vessel" in magazine issue 5 of the Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection .

The otherwise unspecified vessel was a design by John Eaves , which eventually came in two size variants. The subject of this entry became at 76.2 meters the smaller one, and was by Eaves designated as a "Romulan fighter". ( Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection , issue 5, pp.8-14)
