Queen Musical ‘We Will Rock You’ Maps North American Tour

Fresh off Bohemian Rhapsody ‘s box office success, the Queen -inspired musical We Will Rock You will return to North American arenas this fall. Alberta, Canada’s Annerin Theatricals have revived the musical, which debuted in 2002, for its latest touring production, which kicks off September 3rd with a six-night residency in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“Annerin is proud to be able to produce We Will Rock You , and we are obviously lucky with our timing,” Annerin Theatricals’ Jeff Parry said in a statement.

“This is a show I have wanted to produce since I first saw it in London. My vision was to be able to produce it in such a way that it plays in soft-seaters as well as cut-down arenas. I thought that Queen’s musical was for everyone and not just the typical Broadway crowd, therefore we’re producing it in a way that can accommodate most buildings and audiences that want to experience the music of Queen in a uniquely theatrical manner.”

Whereas Bohemian Rhapsody is a straight-up biopic, We Will Rock You uses Queen’s music to tell a futuristic, “quirky, eccentric and heartfelt story of outsiders.”

We Will Rock You: Worldwide Tour

The production.

The production will embark on an extensive world tour, opening in Cape Town, South Africa on 29 August 2020, before touring to Johannesburg, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Israel and beyond. Full casting and further dates and venues to be announced in due course.

The musical is co-produced with Selladoor Worldwide, Carlos Candal, Gavin Kalin Productions and Showtime Management South Africa.

Telling the story of a group of bohemians in a dystopian future and featuring 24 of Queen’s greatest hits, We Will Rock You will be directed and choreographed by Olivier Award nominee Nick Winston (Annie, Loserville, Waiting for Godot). The production will feature set design by Tom Rogers, costume design by Hayley Grindle, lighting by Tim Mitchell and sound by Ben Harrison. We Will Rock You has a combined South African and international creative team. Full casting and further dates and venues to be announced in due course.

‘We Will Rock You’ World Tour Full Cast Announced

This brand new production will be making its world premiere in Manila this October. The principal cast features Nicolette Fernandes as Scaramouche, Stuart Brown as Galileo, Londiwe Dhlomo as Killer Queen, Craig Urbani as Khashoggi, Tiaan Rautenbach as Buddy, Richard Gau as Brit, and Danelle Cronje as Oz.

Joining them as members of the ensemble are Kenneth Meyer, AllenChambers, Siya Makakane, Nadine Grobbelaar, Ashleigh Butcher, RobynIvey, Tannah Levick, Tania Mteto, Adrienne Theron, Claire Boswell, NathanMuller, Zolani Treasure Star Shangase, Tshepo Ncokoane, Michael Fullard,Thami Njoko, Sibusiso Mxosana, Kent Jeycocke, Dirk Joubert, Alexandra Girad and Hannah Marshall.

“The production has assembled a new generation of performers to step into these incredible roles,” shares Carlos Candal GMG Productions CEO and We Will Rock You World tour Co-Producer. “We can’t wait for them to bring new energy and a fresh take on these characters and their songs-iconic songs known the world over, and we’re confident their talent will deliver in a big way.”

The production is helmed by director-choreographer Nick Winston. Also in the international creative team are Ryan Lee-Seager (associate director and choreographer), Libby Watts (assistant choreographer), Tom Rogers (set designer), Ben Cracknel (lighting designer), Ben Harrison (sound designer), Douglas O’Connor (video designer), Sarah Mercade (costume designer), Mark Crossland (musical supervisor), and Megan Rarity (costume supervisor).

We Will Rock You Returns for 20th Anniversary Tour

Queen and Ben Elton’s smash hit musical We Will Rock You is back for 2022 to celebrate its 20 th anniversary with a new tour in theatres across the UK, directed by Ben Elton.

Kicking off in Portsmouth at the Kings Theatre on 7 th February, the tour will then play 27 venues around the country before culminating with a residency at Manchester‘s Palace Theatre on 5 th September.

The musical has seen unprecedented success in theatres and arenas all around the world since it first premiered in London nearly 20 years ago at the Dominion Theatre in May 2002. And now, the original writer of We Will Rock You and godfather of stand-up comedy, Ben Elton will be back in the Director’s chair working with the new 2022 cast ready to rock UK audiences once again.

Ben Elton said: “I can hardly believe it’s been 20 years since We Will Rock You premiered in London. Or that much of what we thought was science fiction in the script back then has turned into science fact! I guess Queen were always ahead of the game! I’ve directed this show all over the world and I can’t wait to bring it home to the UK with a brand new production and a fabulous cast of young Bohemians, most of whom were rocking in their cradles when this adventure first began.”

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.
