I have a set of i3-9 with Dynamic Gold S400 shafts on the way. I can't find any info about them. The seller only wrote that it is standard loft (what that now means). Only thing I can find is that Nick Faldo was involved in designing and testing them back in late 80th, and that these clubs got out on the european market only in 1989. If someone can tell more about the specs, like loft for each club it would be great. And how heavy DG S400 is compared to my current KBS Tour C-taper 105 s shafts.

Driver:  Cobra F9 9° with 44.5" Tensei AV Blue 75 stiff. Irons:  Mizuno JPX 919 Tour (5-Pw, 2° weak lofted) with KBS Tour $-taper 120. Wedges:  Cleveland RTX4 53° and 58°. Putter:  Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft #6.

Don't know the head specs but the shafts are basically as heavy as you can get. Up to 132grams. So pretty big change from 105 KBSs.

I play a set of Macgregor MX Midsize with Macgregor Multiflex (Think thet are like DG R300) that are heavier than my KBS shafts and felt great in the swing. Got the Wilson clubs today, but can't test them before monday because they at work and I'm not today.

Wilson Staff Model Blades Irons Review

wilson staff tour blade fg 49

50 Words or Less

The Wilson Staff Model Blades are beautiful.  Great, solid feel and surprisingly high playability.

Introduction

With 62 major championships and a major win in every decade going back to the 1920s, no golf company has the history that Wilson Staff does.  Their latest iron, the Wilson Staff Model Blades, is a modern interpretation with distinct nods to the company’s storied past.  With one major win already under its belt, this iron is on its way to carving out its own spot in the Wilson Staff story.

I love everything about the look of the Wilson Staff Model Blades.  From address to in the bag, I don’t think any company has an iron that looks this good .  What earns them such high praise is the way they blend classic and modern elements.

Let’s start with the playing position.  At address, these irons have the exact silhouette that a blade player wants: compact length, thin top line, virtually no offset .  The little details elevate it to another level.  A row of diamonds border the grooves, a throwback to Wilson irons of the past.  The “triple-knurled hosel” adds visual interest without being distracting.

As good as the Wilson Staff Model Blades look at address, I think they look even better in the bag .  The profile is a classic muscle back, but the shaping of the lower portion has a distinctly modern look.  Wilson’s shield logo adorns the toe and is balanced with the “Staff Model” branding in a clean, modest-sized font.  Finally, the attention to detail really comes through in the stylish placement of the iron numbers, tipping just slightly off the edge of the thin sole.

Sound & Feel

Playing a blade is as much about the feel as it is the look, and the Wilson Staff Model Blades don’t disappoint.  Hitting a pure shots is extremely rewarding, producing a solid feel and a robust impact sound .  If you’re tired of the “click” of thin-faced distance irons, you will love it.

The feedback from these irons is as impressive as anything I’ve hit in years.  What makes them stand apart is the way they distinguish a good shot from a great shot.  Only a truly pure shot gets the feel described above.  A good shot feels good, but not amazing.  These irons won’t spare your feelings when you make a bad swing, either.  Hitting one on the far toe or heel has a weak, slappy feel that can make you wonder if you should be playing blades.

Performance

In the grand scheme of golf equipment, the Wilson Staff Model Blades are just that: blades.  They’re designed to give pros and very low handicappers supreme control over their ball flight , and they do just that.  To be able to imagine a specific shot, make a quality swing, and see that exact shot is a joy.

Within the world of blades, the Staff Model Blades are surprisingly easy to hit .  Wilson credits their Fluid Feel Hosel, adapted from the classic Dyna-Powered irons, for eliminating unnecessary weight and increasing playability.  I was particularly impressed with the way these irons dealt with thin shots.

wilson staff tour blade fg 49

The Wilson Staff Model Blades have a mid-spin profile that makes them playable for a wide variety of swings.  They are slightly higher spinning than most cavity back irons because skilled players want that spin as a means to shaping their shots.  However, they are not as high spinning as some blades, which strengthens their ball flight and gives them more distance.

Finally, these irons are milled to ensure tighter tolerances .  This makes the head weight more consistent which in turn leads to more consistent swing weight.  With more consistent swing weight, each club will feel similar and that should lead to confidence with every iron in the set.

wilson staff tour blade fg 49

If it’s not obvious, I’ll say it plainly: the Wilson Staff Model Blades are one of my favorite iron sets of 2019 .  They’re beautiful, they feel great, and they’re a joy to play.  The audience for true blades like this is fairly small (most golfers should check out Wilson’s C300 irons HERE ), but those golfers will be thrilled by this blend of old and new.

My golf pro loaned me one to hit. Either I was middling everything (unlikely) or these are far more forgiving than have any right to be. Only club I’ve seen which look better than my Ben Hogan Ft Worth. Stunning. Makes you want to hit golf balls all day.

Being. 70 year old golfer I remember the days of the WILSON Dyna-Power clubs. They were the best feeling and performing clubs of the Day. Is Great to see WILSON coming back with quality that once set them apart from the rest of the club companies. Proud of you WILSON. Welcome Back. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

We love the Game. We play for the love of Game.

' src=

I have a set of these 3-PW and they are the best irons I have ever hit, I am 66 years old and play off 8, Love them

' src=

are they forgiving though? like the sweet spot is the size of a larger coin or is it as small as a pin?

' src=

If you ask this question, you probably don’t have the mindset to play them. You’ll blame your mishits on the fact they are blades. These have weight shifted toward the toe for added forgiveness. Will be easier to hit than you expect.

' src=

Very nice and great review. In terms of best looking blades on the market? Still have to give that title to Mizuno.

' src=

I still have my Staff blades from 1979 and still dig them out from time to time. Their new blades are beautiful but I haven’t seen them in person because no one has them in stock just the other Wilson irons. I would give these a try I don’t think blades are as scary as people like to think and you do adjust to them after awhile.

' src=

I had a set Wilson blades that I hit very well and I gave the to a young man that couldn’t afford clubs. Do I miss them yes!

' src=

I’ve played the Tour V-6 for several years and purchased the FG Tour 100 9 and wedge. I very much would like to hit these!!

' src=

I hopefully will be in the market for some new irons this next spring and these are definitely going to be one of my top interest. I’ve been, other than to try a different set here and there, using Titleist 695mb’s and 710mb’s ever since each was released flipping back and forth between the two depending on which one I could find in the best condition and a decent price after I wore out the groves on my previous set. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to find sets of either in good enough condition to bother with that aren’t over priced. Sorry, but I’m not spending $475-$500+ on a model that is 10+ years old unless it’s new in plastic.

Great review. Miura MB-101’s or Wilson Staff Model Blades?

' src=

I’d take the Wilsons. I love them.

' src=

Have a 7 iron coming to try. Unfortunately trying to find a demo iron is not so easy (come on Wilson!). Ordered one with the shaft I want and grip I like though. We will see…

' src=

Recently bought a new set of the new cobra king forged tec Irons having tried them out and received good feedback from you Matt .

I really do like these wilson staff tour blades as a possible second set . Know they’re quite different to the cobras.

Never ever had a set of wilson equipment in the past so not sure about how they compare quality and performance wise to the other major brands .

Seriously thinking about a second set of either these blades or the wilson c300 Forged Irons .

Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks

The C300 Forged is more similar to your Cobras. If you want something that’s more challenging to hit, the Staff Model Blades are it. Wilson’s quality is absolutely on a level with any other OEM.

' src=

I’ve been a single marker for years also a blade man through and through.. I looked for a smooth looking iron for around a year to replace my overpriced titliest blades, and found it immediately with the new Wilson’s… I went into shock at first really Wilson have created this beautiful masterpiece.. And priced fairly.. congratulations Wilson finally sticking to your over priced competitors.

' src=

Wilson Staff Model Blade, Ping Blueprint, TaylorMade PT71 or Mizuno MP 20 MB?

I think the Blueprints are the easiest to play. Beyond that it’s a matter of preference for looks and feel.

' src=

What are the bounce angles on these irons?

Wilson doesn’t have the bounce specs on their site.

' src=

How much forgiveness will I sacrifice by switching from Titleist CB to Wilson blade? I consider my cb’s quite forgiving & easy to hit

Some but not a lot.

' src=

I have been a Wilson fan ever since my dad gave me his old set of 1962 Dynapower irons. I strayed to Pings in the 1980s, but returned to Fat Shafts when they came out, and now I play FG62s. I hate to say it, but one factor in my love of Wilson irons is simply the way they look. They are beautiful. They fit my eye. I might play better with a more forgiving club, but I just love playing with a beautiful golf club. That being said, I wonder about ways to improve performance. I love the idea of fat shafts, but the club was simply not as pretty as blades, so I abandoned them. But now I wonder: is it possible to put a fat shaft on FG62s or even on my old Dynapowers?

No, I don’t think you can. I’m not sure the exact dimensions of the Fat Shaft, but I believe the hosel would need to be made extra large to accommodate it.

' src=

Any shaft options besides Stiff? Always loved Staffs and played blades my whole golf career but I’m a Senior now. Thanks.

I’m not sure what options Wilson orders through their custom shop. I would suggest contacting them, or you could order the Staff Model Blades through a builder like Club Champion who can build them with any shaft you want.

' src=

Turning 60 this year, I decided to go back to blades with these Wilson clubs (having started my golfing days more than 40 years ago with John Letters Master Mex irons and after that having played with Mizuno MP33’s for a long time before switching to Ping cavity backs). Best decision was to leave my ego behind and have the Wilson blades fitted with light weight regular shafts (KBS 80). Fantastic set of golf clubs, that have helped bringing my handicap back to low single figures again (2.9).

' src=

Playing the AP2’s for a couple of years, but fell instantly in love with these blades. Lowered my hcp last summer from 11 to 6, and I’m 48 yrs now… such a joy to hit, and ironically blades force you to focus more, and therefore makes you a better player in my opinion. (Playing KBS Tour Stiff shaft, carrying my 7iron 170 yards.)

' src=

Thanks! That’s what I thinking about. Improve the game by using a not as easy to hit club with a nice feeling and great feedback.

' src=

I’m currently playing PXG 0211st irons..which are a blade of sorts I believe. I’m inconsistent but working on it.. I get frustrated but Still keep going. Are the wilson staff blades similar to my PXGs I don’t have an official handicap.. I can hit the ball far but if I’m honest the game frustrates me at times.

Stupidly though I’d keep trying to get it right with blades rather than hit big chunky irons

Pathetic I know 😒 anyway pxg0211st similar to these?

Yes, it appears the 0211 ST irons are similar.

' src=

I got Wilson staff Cubs and I love them

' src=

Great review as usual Matt. How would these compare with your two gamers the Blueprint and The Gen 3T’s?

They don’t have much in common with the GEN3 T other than being reasonably close in size. The Staff Model Blade and the Blueprint are very similar, it just comes down to preference.

' src=

I have a strong preference for a more cambered sole. From the pictures, these look a little more rounded than other blades in their class (thinking especially of Blueprints and MP-20s, which are the only two that I think rival the Wilson Staff Model Blades’ looks). Is that what you’ve experienced, Matt?

That’s an interesting observation. Are you talking about rounding from heel to toe – across the length of the sole – or from the leading to trailing edge? Or both?

I was looking from leading to trailing edge. Seems to be a more rounded shape there than many other blades?

(As a quick side rant, this is my biggest complaint about being fitted indoors on a mat. The impact of the sole shape is so much more evident outdoors.)

It may be slightly more rounded, but I think the difference is pretty small.

' src=

Just bought some of these and what everyone says is true. These are easy to hit and was getting the same distance as my Ping i210’s. I put these up against the Ping i59, Ping i525, Mizuno 221 and 225 as well as the Callaway Rogue ST Pro and these won i. Dispersion every time. They felt better than the Mizuno 221 but looks are split 50/50 with Mizuno! Did I mention the price? ..$280 cheaper than the i59 and $170 cheaper than the i525. What else can you say… try them, you wont regret it… I promise!!

' src=

Hey Matt, I’m a college golfer who is a decent ball striker, but not with a crazy amount of speed. Currently playing the apex pro 19s and just fell in love with these wilson staff model irons. I love the way the look and feel, but have always been a bit worried about giving up some forgiveness as compared to a players cavity. I keep seeing that these Wilson’s are long and forgiving for a blade. Would you say the forgiveness is more in line with a small cavity, and are they a lot shorter distance wise than a club like that? Really want to give these a go but don’t want to see more scores skyrocket hahah

My advise is always to get fit to see what the differences are for you. As a low spin player, the higher spin of a blade iron doesn’t cost me a ton of distance. Others see very different results. In terms of forgiveness, you will always give up some with a blade, but, relative to other blades, I think these are fairly easy to hit.

' src=

How would these Wilson Staff Blades compare to the Taylormade p790’s?

The Wilson Staff Blades are not really comparable to the P790s. Here is a review of the newest P790: https://pluggedingolf.com/2021-taylormade-p790-irons-review/

' src=

I could only dream to be good enough to play these. I was just curious if you found the the feel to to be buttery soft?

Thank you for all your great reviews.

I enjoyed the feel, as I described above, but I wouldn’t call them buttery soft.

' src=

How would you compare Calloway apex 21 MB’s to the Wilson staff blades for forgiveness and playability and dimensoins

I have a full review of the Apex MB here: https://pluggedingolf.com/2020-callaway-apex-mb-irons-review-2/

' src=

Matt: The look and increased sole camber of the Wilson Saff blade appeals to me.

I enjoy my sets of MacGregor PCB Tour Irons with Rifle 5.0 shafts- would you think the Wilson Staff blade would be an improvement for a 12 handicap- age 70?

It depends what you’re looking for an improvement in. My advice is always to test your gear against the new stuff in a fitting to see exactly what improvements you’re getting.

' src=

Still playing a set of John Letters Super Mex irons my father gave me when I was a little younger. Wondering if I would benefit from replacing them with the Willson Blades. What can I expect?

– Hessel

I’m not familiar with the set you mentioned, so I’m not sure how the Wilson Staff would compare.

Wilson Staff Tour Blades Irons

Wilson staff tour blades irons , user reviews.

The first set of forgings I bought were MacGregor Masters at a yard sale and learnt the game with those. Only recently did I get the FG-17s, and I couldn''t be more pleased with my choice. The club design (with mass concentrated right behind the striking area) gives a low penetrating ball tragectory when struck at the sweet spot. I have compared them with several current forged blades by Mizuno, Cleveland and TaylorMade -- but have yet to come across clubs that feel better than these. So, if you have a consistent (repeatable) swing, find yourself some used FG-17s and you will not regret your decision.

The set of staffs I have were first purchased in 1976. This would make them one year younger than I am at 26. I love these clubs. I have been on a break for about 5 years , and have just started to hit the range. My only coach and golf mentor Hank Schiller from california hit staffs and hit the hell out of them. Guys joked with him about getting some modern clubs but he wouldnt have it, and now I know why. Granted if you miss hit these clubs they tell you, but when unload on the ball it feels awesome. My clubs are considered the fake bullet backs. If anybody runs into Mr Schiller tell him to give me an email. Everything I know about mechanichs I learned from him.

Old Pinseekers King Cobra 1s

The first set of golf clubs I ever bought, a set of Wilson Staff Blades (FG-17''s), back in 1984. I think they were actually made in ''83. When I was playing a lot of golf, and had my handicap down to about a 3, I played the FG-17''s and loved them. Fade, draw, whatever could me "manufactured" by these clubs. Hitting the sweet spot on these irons is like butter. Sweet and smooth. I would have to rate these irons as some of the best blades ever produced. The Haig Ultras run a close second. Unfortunately, I do not play enough golf to justify swinging a blade, as I do not find the sweetspot as often as I used to. Maybe one day, after my 3 year old and 8 month old get older, and I can afford to join a golf course again, I will take these outta the closet, dust them off, and take them out to the range. For now, they are just taking up space. Anybody want to buy a used set of Staff Blades?

Never used it.

Many blades and cavity backs in my 25+ years of play.

I am a total club junkie. I have played umpteen irons over the last few years, both cast and forged. Last year I abandoned "game improvement" cast cavity backs and returned to forged blades. A couple of my favorites have been Golfsmith Pro Forged and KZG. However, recently I picked up a very clean set of 1983 Wilson Staff FG-51''s and a clean set of 1993 Wilson Progressives. Unbelieveable!!! These sticks are simply fabulous. If you have a decent stroke and strike the ball fairly well you owe it to yourself to try forged blades. You''ll be shocked! It is a myth that they are very difficult to play and only for scratch golfers. You may want to swap out the long irons for cavity backs or hybrids, but in the mid to short irons you''ll love the blades. The wonderful thing about these Wilsons is that you can pick up a pretty clean set on eBay for less than $100 to $150, have them reshafted and regripped for another $100, and you''ll have a terrific set of sticks for way less than a crappy set of cast cavity backs.

Ping Eye 2, Zing 2, ISI, and I3. Titleist 962, 981, and 990. Orlimar SF302. Macgregor PCB. Hogan Apex Plus. Maxfli Revolution. Golfsmith Tour Cavity Pro and Pro Forged. KZG Forged Blades.

First off, I know these aren't Wilson Staff irons, but there is no entry available for Haig Ultra's. Besides, Wilson purchased Walter Hagen in the late forties/early fifties, so, close enough. Let me say that I've been playing golf for over thirty years now, and while I don't play or practice as much as I should, I suppose my handicap is about 7 or 8. I've owned these clubs for nineteen years now and even though the irons have lost some chrome, to me, they're still the best. I had these clubs reshafted two years ago with TT regular steel shafts an inch over standard length. The big advantage to these irons for me is that the long irons are easy to hit straight and to hit fades or draws when neccessary. I found it difficult to do that with cast, perimeter weighted clubs. They are not as forgiving as some clubs, but they are deadly accurate around the greens, and provide a feel you don't get with cast clubs. Another advantage is that because the clubs are so old the lofts are weaker, and a pitching wedge is a true wedge loft and not 45-47*. It's interesting to me, that while sometimes I may not hit quite as many greens with these irons as with "game-improvement" clubs, I seem to score lower overall with the "Haig's." As many other reviewers have said, I think if you pick up an old set of forged blades on ebay, and put some new shafts in them, you'll be surprised how well they perform against the newer, more expensive irons. One more thing, I have found that many times clubs you perform well with could have more to do with them being properly "fitted" to your swing, than with the clubs themselves. Having said that though, Haig-Ultra's fit my game. In a word-GREAT!

Spalding Tour Edition blades,Hogan Edge original,Ping Eye 2, Cleveland VAS+,Macgregor JNP,Mizuno MP-29,King Cobra II,etc.,etc.,etc.

Played golf as a teenager in the late 70's, and always wanted a set of Staffs but couldn't afford them. Stop playing, then picked golf up again in 1999 after a 20-year hiatus. Kyped a set of Armour TI-100's and liked them, but still had my eye on those Staffs. Spotted my set on eBay, and man was it the right decision! Re-shafted with TT Lite XL regulars and GP Player's Sofftie grips, and have shot my 5 lowest rounds since beginning this stupid game again. I just love them. They have the right feel when I swing them, and when solid contact is made, there's just nothing like them. I can't believe I paid a tenth of what I gave for the Armour's! I've hit the Hogan Apex blades a few times, and I liked them, but these FG-17's are just tooooooo good!!! I don't know about irons that are marketed as "game improvement" clubs, but I can tell you that these 20-year-old forged blades certainly improved my game. Makes me think that all these other clubs are just hyped mediocrities. Everyone dreams of "buying" a good game, and the mfgr's have tapped into this in a big way. Me? I've found what I need. The only money I'll spend from now on is for new grips. I even bought 2 other sets of FG-17's to use in case I break shafts, etc., and I should be assured of having great clubs for many years to come!!!

component cavity backs, Armour TI-100's, Hagen Ultra's,

Tour blades are pretty hard to hit, but they hit straight. They are great out of deep rough.

I got an experienced (c. 1967) set of these forged irons on ebay and they work wonderfully. Less forgiving than game-improvement sets, these great-looking irons make me want to play better because I can really feel more precisely what's wrong -- and what's right -- with my swing. Besides, in any given round most shots involve wedges, your putter, and the odd wood.

What else can be said but these clubs are the best. They combine workability, feel and a classic look. Thin top line, bullet back. They aren't as unforgiving as they look. I have novus graphite in mine to absorb some of the shock on the mis-hits. These clubs have feel, you can close your eyes and know where the ball went based solely on feel. The traditional, no bounce, sole allows for crisp play from fairway or rough. Not for the faint of heart, if you don't have game, don't put these in your bag but, if you can play, you may as well play the best. It was a sad day in my life when Wilson announced that they were going to stop forging clubs.

Titleist DCI Black. Hogan Apex. Hogan Medallion. Haigs.

Recently re-shafted these relics with X-100's, and had them re-chromed and re-grooved. What can I say? Still the best sticks ever made. High fades, low draws, whatever you want, these babies can do it. Wasted a lot of time searching for newer, "more prestigious" sticks, when I had the best all the time. I would encourage any good player (these ain't for high handicappers) to seek them out.

Zevo blades, Marumann "Curtis Strange", ad nauseum.

Wilson Staff FG Tour irons

At address, the Wilson Staff FG Tour irons offer a fantastic blend of being small enough to feel that you can control flight and shape, while also offering confidence-inspiring size and forgiveness. Best of all however, is the feel. A well-struck shot feels just as silky smooth with these as with any of the more expensive forged options currently on the market.

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Neil Tappin

The Wilson Staff FG Tour irons have been forged from soft carbon steel to offer a more responsive feel. The wider sole and cavity back lowers the centre of gravity to help improve ball striking. The classic design is based on the famous F17 iron model created by Bob Mandrella.

These irons should suit golfers who prefer the feel of a forged club, want a Tour iron that also offers forgiveness, and like a classic-looking design.

Hi, I'm looking for some background on my clubs. I have a set of Wilson FG 49s 2-SW. I love them. Such a small sweet spot but when you find it... Wow! Can you give me some background and/or history? Also, if I were to sell, what should I ask for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Jason

I have seen these, sure. Tour blade with a massive hozel from the 1980s. Very similar to Mizuno TPs as I remember it. Quite rare, but probably only to a collector of Staff clubs = small market. You can pick up "vgc" TPs for £100 or so. I had some TP9s, bought them for £125 and sold them for £125. But that was 15 years ago. I wouldn't hold your breath on the value.

Thanks Dave. That's good info. Very little available on the set so it's really appreciated. I'll keep hold of them I think as they're beautiful to look at.

I picked up a set of FG-49's from the UK about a month ago 1i + 3-SW for a steal in my opinion. They replaced my 89 Fluid Feels as my daily drivers and I started doing quite a bit of homework on the s

Wow. They sure look nice. I am something of a Wilson Staff nut, but I did not know these existed. I think the most unusual aspect is the odd "font" for the numeral on the sole of the club. I have a set of Wilson Staff RG-100s about which I can find nothing. Also a nice set. They are not the same, but your FG-49s remind me a bit of my RG-100s. Both share features of some of the classic models (presumably earlier, but maybe not), both have very clean lines. I'll be watching to see if someone can supply good info on your irons. In my experience, Wilson has been bought and sold several times and records of older models have been tossed out. So unless you happen to find an oldtimer survivor type in the company, you probably will just get the same line I have gotten several times -- "They were top of the line clubs in their day, but we no longer have records of specifications or manufacturing details. They were probably produced sometime in the 1980s [or whatever decade the person imagines]." By the way, how did you acquire them? Was there a demo set you tried out? Or did you just buy based on the recommendation of someone? Was there any advertising or brochures that steered you to them? FYI, My FG-100s are from eBay and I suspect I got an EXCELLENT deal solely because nobody had heard of RG-100s. They are really nice clubs, as I suspect yours are too.
Oh, I had never heard of the FG-100´s either. It would be nice to see pictures of them (Google provided none). I acquired the set from a local dealer in southern sweden. All my friends from the junior team in the club played either Mizuno TP-9´s or Hogan Apex, and I convinced my father to buy a set of blades for me. We went to the dealer, about an hours drive away, and I browsed all the suitable irons from the right brands, but all were just a bit to expensive. The guy in the shop finally showed me the set of Wilsons, and explained that I could get a good deal on them because they were custom ordered for someone who had backed out of the deal. They are great irons and after having played the titleist 695 MB´s for a while I am prepared to go back to the Wilsons. The only thing stopping me is that it would be impossible to find a replacement if I truly broke one of them. Shafts on 7 and pitch are already replaced due to accidents in the wood many years ago, but what if I broke one of the heads? Br - Johan

I remember those. Nice irons. They were fairly common in the UK and Europe and were a sort of sister model to the later Fluid Feel model Wilson irons. It sounds as though they may not have made their way across the pond. I remember one of the local pros having a set. Amusingly, a bit like your mates on the junior team, I was also a TP-9 man (or possibly onto my set of TP-11s) when you were picking them up. Our junior team's iron collection was like a scene from a Mizuno and Ping convention, and 90% of the wood spots were occupied by colourful-shafted Taylor Mades. Several people had essentially the same bags but for one or two clubs. I always liked the squarer look of Wilson's blades, but I could never get on with the diamond hatching that framed the faces of many models. Where are you from, Staffer?

Ooops. I meant RG-100, not FG-100. I think I have a photo or two. If not, will take some. Will post again.

Here it is (RG-100): Note the very flat muscle and the mini-bullet groove. Yet I suspect this is from the later 1980s or early 1990s. They have a very nice acoustic and tactile feedback for a square hit on the sweet spot..
Oh yes, the Mizuno TP-11´s. I had a friend who played them, and it is probably my all time favorite Mizuno. Really liked the short roundish look of the blade, and how straight the top of the muscleback was. Just like everyone else I played a TM burner, but I just couldnt find one with a graphite shaft that I could hit straight, so I had to go for a steel shaft. The FG-49´s dont have the diamond hatching on the face, which is good because I like a clean face as well. I am from Sweden, from the most southern part of the country, so golfing season is march to october. When I was younger I played winter golf in the snow, and I will never forget the feeling in the hands when misshitting a 3 iron in below zero degree weather =). Br - Johan

Yes, the overall shape looks a lot like the 49´s, but with some differences in the muscle. The muscle is also very flat on the 49´s, but no bullet groove, and the topline of the muscle is a bit straighter on a 4 iron. Br - Johan

I am surprised, and very grateful, that a complete stranger, from a different country, decides to reach out and do something nice for someone that he does not know. I´ll do what I can to deserve it.

it's no problem, it will be nice for this SW to be part of a set again, where it belongs :-) otherwise it would just sit in my garage and never get to hit a ball ever again, and that will never do for a club like this !

hi, just a little extra info for you - i worked as an assistant pro back in the late 80's for a pro who was a wilson staff player, so we were fairly well-informed on wilson products of the time. this particular model was launched in 1989 in the UK and a fairly extensive ammount of the designing, prototyping, grinding and testing etc. was done by nick faldo. wilson were desparate to have a set of their own in faldo's bag as it was always common knowledge that he was bagging mizuno's in a staff bag. unfortunately the end result wasn't quite what the man wanted, so the mizzies stayed put!! nice clubs, but similar to the mizuno tp19's that faldo helped design - very unforgiving. hope this is of a little use to you. regards tony

The timeline makes sense, the wilson site has FG-51 placed at 1991, and 2 majors between 1989 and 1991 seems reasonable. I seem to remember Faldo playing TP-9 in 1989, so I guess the plan was for the FG-49´s to top them then. I wonder if they were forged by Hoffman. My father bought the clubs for me new in 1989, got a good price because someone had ordered them half an inch shorter but didnt buy them when delivered.

hi, no problem. glad i could be of assistance. couldn't honestly tell you who forged them as the line of information was nowhere near as complete as it is nowadays. if you're interested i know you can pick up a book of old wilson catalogues dating way back by jim kaplan. i'm unsure as to how extensive the info in it is, but if you're into "old sticks", as i am, then is well worth a look. regards tony hi, just a little extra info for you - i worked as an assistant pro back in the late 80's for a pro who was a wilson staff player, so we were fairly well-informed on wilson products of the time. this particular model was launched in 1989 in the UK and a fairly extensive ammount of the designing, prototyping, grinding and testing etc. was done by nick faldo. wilson were desparate to have a set of their own in faldo's bag as it was always common knowledge that he was bagging mizuno's in a staff bag. unfortunately the end result wasn't quite what the man wanted, so the mizzies stayed put!! nice clubs, but similar to the mizuno tp19's that faldo helped design - very unforgiving. hope this is of a little use to you. regards tony
Thank you so much, that was more information about these clubs than I have found in the previous 21 years =). I found a set of wilson staff fg-49 golf clubs on ebay and stumbled across this topic while researching the club. You asked about how you would replace a broken head in the set if one were to break, you could purchase these heads and keep them as backups. The link to the auction can be found here. The set looks pretty cool although it seems the heads may have been sanded down to achieve a "satin" finish. You could rechrome them at the ironfactory or something, but that would add the cost. Right now, I play the FG tours and have my eye on the FG-62s. It's nice to see the company come back to the forefront of golf club manufacturing. Anyway, best of luck to you!

To confirm a previous post, these irons were not sold in the USA & are not listed in the USA Wilson catalogs. I have every (USA) staff model produced back to 1956. If anyone has a set of the Fg-49 models they would like to sell, I would be interested.

Very interesting info here, does anybody actually know what FG and RG actually stand for as previously mentioned with regards to the FG-49's and RG-100's !?

I am not sure if they were a custom/tour issue or just European models of similar style to US heads. Andy

Fairly certain the RG stamp was for custom grinds. Here is a picture of my RG 10 wedge ordered circa late 1980's.

I've taken a break from the game to bring up the family, but now have an opportunity to play more regularly and so hope to get back to good single figures. My Wilson Staff FG 49s (with Dynamic Gold s400 shafts) are still with me and still flight the ball really well, but I'm now looking for some help. I'm still playing these fantastic and beautiful clubs (as well as a Mizuno Tour Pro 5 persimmon!), but have the feeling that the advances in technology now outweigh the pleasure of wielding these irons. Also... thought of striking the stiff 1-iron is a bit daunting. One recent youg pro suggested that its only fit place was "as a stake for the runner beans". What can I say... no class! Anyway, I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my well-worked 8-iron and the very clean 1-iron. The former I'm still hitting consistently to155 yards carry, whereas the latter... I think on reflection that the pro (or Lee Travino in his famous quipe about 1-irons and lightning) might have been right. In considering change to bring me into the 21st century, does any one know the loft angles for the the 3-PW + SW FG 49s so that I can work the numbers on some new clubs? Were these FG 49s similar/identifical to the (I think) later FG 51s? I haven't yet got a direct response from Wilson, so perhaps someone knows? Would anyone recommend the Mizuno MP59s as a way forwarrd, or is there something else I need to look out for and iron test, e.g. the Titleist MB 712s?

  1. Wilson Staff FG-49 & FG-55 Tour Blades

Including the FG-49 & FG-55 mentioned above and a 1988-90 set of Staff Goose-Necks (not pictured), This is my Wilson Iron collection. Remake of the 1971-72 "Button Back" Irons. These were sold from 1993-96. 1969-70 "Bullet Back" remakes were also sold during this time.

  2. Late 70s-Early 80s Wilson Staff Tour Blades

The mid 70s 'Staff' model and the late 70s Staff Tour were brilliant irons. Both were still seeing a lot of play in the bags of good players when I started out in the game in the mid 80s. Fat muscled clubs with a high CoG and a squarish toe grind. The FG-17s came along a couple of years later and were more of the same.

  3. Wilson Staff Tour Blade FG-49

On my travels today I ventured into a pawnbroker with a large warehouse out back and stumbled upon a set of Wilson Staff Tour Blade FG-49 1 Iron through SW each with Dynamic Gold X100 shafts. Despite showing signs of wear on the more popular short irons, I couldn't pass them up for 20 bucks. They're a beautiful club!

  4. Wilson Staff Tour Blades Irons

Model Reviewed: wilson staff tour blade '78-'80. A game improvement club in blades clothing. My handicap dropped 4 points after buying thes. Not to say that these clubs are forgiving, but they do give lots of feedback about your swing. Lofts are traditional, so there was an initial loss of distance.

  9. Wilson Staff Model Blades Irons Review

Playing a blade is as much about the feel as it is the look, and the Wilson Staff Model Blades don't disappoint. Hitting a pure shots is extremely rewarding, producing a solid feel and a robust impact sound . If you're tired of the "click" of thin-faced distance irons, you will love it. 11. Wilson Staff Tour Blades Irons

Model Reviewed: Wilson Staff FG-17 Tour Blades. Played golf as a teenager in the late 70's, and always wanted a set of Staffs but couldn't afford them. Stop playing, then picked golf up again in 1999 after a 20-year hiatus. Kyped a set of Armour TI-100's and liked them, but still had my eye on those Staffs.

  12. First Look: Wilson Staff Model Blades

The Wilson Staff FG Tour irons have been forged from soft carbon steel to offer a more responsive feel. The wider sole and cavity back lowers the centre of gravity to help improve ball striking.
