The inside story

The Windsor estate is the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world . It is not only one of the official residences of the British monarchy, but also an amazing synthesis of nine hundred years of British history .

In 1066 William the Conqueror chose this location west of London due to its strategic position on the Thames River. Since that time, all major events that occurred from the conquest of Sir William to present time have always taken place near the Windsor Castle and are closely linked to the history of the British kingdom. The castle has had a great significance in British history throughout the years as it has seen the many trends and tastes of various rulers who succeeded one another.

The castle extends over 45,000 square meters on an artificial hill and is one of the favorite residences of the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II spends many weekends there and a flag that is hoisted on the round tower of the complex indicates her presence at the castle. Nevertheless, several areas of the castle are open to the public and waiting to be discovered! This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in a real fairy tale atmosphere !

You will have the chance to see the magnificent State Apartments where 39 British monarchs resided. Here you can admire the beautiful works of art from the Royal Collection, which houses treasures by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Canaletto. Marvel at the sight of the largest dining table in the world that has more than 100 seats!

From October to March the Semi-State Rooms are open to the public. These private apartments of George IV are incredibly decorated and are still used by Queen Elizabeth II for official receptions.

St. George’s Chapel is one of the most magnificent examples of English Gothic architecture. Inside you will find the graves of ten kings, including Henry VIII and Charles I.

Ladies of all ages! Be ready to be delighted once you step in front of Queen Mary's Dollhouse . It is the largest dollhouse in the world! Commissioned in the first half of the twentieth century by Queen Mary, it is a faithful reproduction of a typical aristocratic era and is complete with interior elevators, electricity, and running water!

Visiting the Castle is more than a simple visit. Tours and tickets take you back in time, giving you the chance to explore over 900 years of British royal history.

Things to do search, what's on search, food & drink search, shopping search, what's on search, food & drink search, dog-friendly places to eat and drink in windsor and maidenhead.

If you are here with your dog for a short break or just for a day, it is good to know things you can do with your four-legged friend, as well as pubs and places to eat and drink that are dog-friendly too.

Take a look at our dog-friendly page for attraction information, suggested places to stay and great walk ideas.

Dog-friendly pubs in Windsor and Maidenhead

Upon asking, you will find that many pubs are happy to have dogs under the table.

For instance in Eton, the George Inn has a completely dog-friendly restaurant, bar area and garden area with water bowls available and dog treats behind the bar.

Dog-friendly places to eat and drink in the Windsor and Maidenhead area

In the warmer weather, cafés with outside tables and chairs – in Windsor Royal, Yards Shopping , Peascod Street, Lower Peascod Street, Guildhall Island and the High Street – make it easy to enjoy an al fresco meal.

In the cooler weather, areas such as Windsor Royal, Station Shopping – with its wide range of eateries – mean you can still enjoy drinking and dining outside under Jubilee Arch or Rear Arch.

Well-behaved dogs, on leads, are welcome on the terrace overlooking  The Savill Garden .  Please note dogs are not allowed in The Savill Garden Kitchen (the main restaurant in The Savill Building) or in the garden itself.

At Great Fosters Hotel near Egham, your four-legged friend can even indulge in a doggy afternoon tea comprising a savoury selection, biscuits, treats and drinks!

Always check in advance of your visit how much of a property is open to your four-legged friend.  For instance some hotels and pubs will allow dogs in the bar area but not the restaurant.
