Street Fighter 6 takes place after the events of the Street Fighter III games. [1] From a chronological order, Street Fighter 6 is the latest title in the official timeline. However, as this mode is focused on the avatar, there's no actual continuation to the story, thus, explainations of what happened to the Secret Society are nonexistent in this mode.

Master Actions can be performed by pressing one of four buttons while the Avatar explores throughout the stage. When the Avatar is enrolled under the veteran fighter's apprenticeship, they gain access to their Master Action. They also learn their fighting style, basic moves, and unique attacks. Master Actions are mainly used to destroy crates and other containers to uncover bonuses like Zenny. The Avatar can strike other roaming fighters with their Master Action to get a head start in a one-on-one battle. Sometimes, Master Actions must be performed to traverse across the stage.

  • The home console versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3 (specifically the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, and PlayStation Portable) also had a World Tour mode of its own, though its presentation is different in that it allowed a player to customize their chosen character's fighting style while battling against predetermined opponents around the world so that they could help build up their chosen character's fighting level.
  • However, the spot of being the only overall stage which does not appear in World Tour falls to the Ruined Lab stage, despite Ed's DLC release date.
  • The mode features the first canonical appearance of Sheng Long , appearing as one of the post-game opponents in 'The Fighty Mighty' Side-Mission.
  • The mode is similar to Dead or Alive 4 ' s Online Mode and the short-lived Dead or Alive Online .

Trolls World Tour

  • View history

Trolls: World Tour (also known as Trolls 2: World Tour , or just Trolls 2 ) is a 2020 American computer-animated adventure jukebox musical comedy film that is DreamWorks Animation's 38th feature film, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The film is a sequel to the 2016 film Trolls and is the second film to be produced by DreamWorks for the "Good Luck Trolls" brand. DreamWorks completed its acquisition of "Good Luck Trolls" following the movies release, so in addition to merchandise related to Trolls World Tour , "Good Luck Trolls" products begun to appear in 2020 soon after the movies release, including 60th Anniversary merchandise and promotion of the brand. As of 2020, the majority of Good Luck Trolls classic products carry the "DreamWorks" branding, as a result 2020 saw DreamWorks promotion two "Trolls" brands.

It is directed by Walt Dohrn with co-direction by David P. Smith, produced by Gina Shay, and written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Elizabeth Tippet, Maya Forbes, and Wallace Wolodarsky, from a story by Aibel and Berger. The film will feature an ensemble voice cast including Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, James Corden, Ozzy Osbourne, Rachel Bloom, Anderson Paak, George Clinton, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Sammy Rockwell, Icona Pop, Ron Funches, Kunal Nayyar, Jamie Dornan, J. Balvin, and Kenan Thompson.

The film was originally scheduled for a wide theatrical release on April 10, 2020, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was released in select theaters and on digital streaming instead. Met with mostly positive reviews like its predecessor, the film set several streaming records, including becoming Universal's most successful day-one rental. Theatrically, the film grossed $51 million.

The film's success led Universal to announce they would be looking into simultaneous theatrical and streaming releases. However, in July, it was reported that AMC and Universal agreed to a multi-year deal to shorten Universal's theatrical window to 10 days (down from the usual 90), and AMC would share subsequent PVOD sales.

A celebration of the Techno Trolls is crashed by the Rock Trolls, led by Queen Barb. After Barb destroys his DJ station with her guitar's power, King Trollex is forced to surrender the blue string that powers Techno music. Poppy, still becoming adjusted to her new leadership as queen, receives a message from Barb that invites all Trolls to a party to unite their music. Her father reveals that there are different kinds of Trolls scattered through their land. The six primary tribes are each represented by a different style of music, Pop, Funk, Classical, Techno, Country, and Rock, and each musical style is powered by a magical string kept by the leader of each tribe. Having separated their tribes following discord and disagreement over which style of music was the best, Poppy wants to help Barb unite the different forms of music, but both her father and Branch warn her not to trust Barb's intentions and accept that the other Trolls are different. Poppy does not listen and sends a cheerful reply to Barb via Debbie, Barb's pet bat.

Meanwhile, Barb gloats over her victory of snatching the Techno string, revealing her plan to string an enchanted guitar with all six strings and play a power chord strong enough to destroy all other music, replacing it with rock.

Wanting to prove herself as a good queen, Poppy travels via air balloon to recruit the other groups of Trolls, Branch joining her in an attempt to express his feelings towards her. Biggie accidentally stows aboard the balloon and joins them. Meanwhile, Cooper, who feels like the black sheep among the Pop trolls, goes on a journey himself to find Trolls who look like him and goodbye to the snack pack.

The balloon ends up in the land of Classical Trolls, which is in ruins to Poppy's horror. A single small flute named Pennywhistle tells Poppy their town had been decimated by Barb's armada, who captured all the citizens and stole the yellow Classical string, and Poppy decides to now unite the other Trolls to stop Barb. Branch and Biggie both urge her to return home to protect the pink Pop string, but Poppy reveals it hidden in her hair. They then travel to the Country Trolls' land, but after introducing themselves with a loud medley of pop songs, they are jailed by an offended Delta Dawn. A Country Troll named Hickory, who claims he is moved by Poppy's motives, breaks them out, leading to a chase to a ravine, where the group falls into a river. Branch does not trust Hickory, even when the Troll builds a raft to take the group downstream. The conversation is interrupted by Chaz, a Smooth Jazz Troll who was hired as a bounty hunter to catch Poppy for Barb, who was incredibly offended by Poppy's reply letter. Hickory incapacitates Chaz, but Biggie, disillusioned by Poppy's poor leadership, decides to return home. Shortly after, the group is abducted by a spaceship wielding magical soap bubbles.

Inside the spaceship, the group meets the Funk Trolls and meets up with Cooper, who is revealed to have been a long-lost identical twin prince of Funk all along. Cooper tells Poppy he finds comfort in identifying with both Pop and Funk, and his parents, King Quincy and Queen Essence, reveal to Poppy that long ago, the original Pop Trolls had attempted to steal the strings and remix the other five music styles into Pop, forcing the other Trolls to each take one string and divide their tribes to save their music. Quincy explains to Poppy that differences do matter, and trying to make all Trolls the same does not help the problem.

After the Rock Trolls hijack the Funk Trolls' ship to steal the purple Funk String, Cooper ejects the group in bubbles, accidentally separating Hickory from the three. Finally fed up with Poppy's selfishness, Branch and Poppy have a falling out, which Branch angrily telling Poppy that she cannot be a good queen if she doesn't listen to others, and the two go their separate ways. Branch is soon captured by both Team K-Pop and Tresillo And His Females Reggaeton Trolls bounty hunters. However, he eventually convinces them to stop capturing and fighting and save Poppy and all music.

Poppy reunites with Hickory, showing him the Pop string. Hickory tries to urge her to return home but suddenly is revealed to have been a Yodel Troll all along. He and another Yodel Troll, Dickory, had been hired to capture her for Barb, but Hickory had a change of heart. Before she can escape, Poppy is then captured personally by Barb, who takes possession of the sixth and final string.

Biggie returns home and, seeing it in shambles, feels remorse over abandoning Poppy. He gathers together their remaining friends to rescue her and Branch, entering the land of the Rock Trolls.

Barb has Poppy imprisoned over a large concert stage where all the captured Trolls are the audience and admits she empathizes with Poppy’s attempts to be a good queen, as she is trying to make rock supreme to prove her own leadership. Barb uses her enchanted guitar to turn Branch and the leaders of the other lands into rock zombies during the concert. Poppy seemingly is transformed into a rock zombie when she falls onto the stage, but upon grabbing Barb’s guitar, it is revealed to have been wearing gumdrop earplugs. She admonishes Barb for being a poor queen by not listening to her people and smashes the guitar. While it snaps the possessed trolls out of their rock zombie state, it destroys the strings, ending music and causing all the trolls to lose their colors, much to Barb’s anguish. Foiled, Barb puts the blame on Poppy for destroying music and blames the Pop trolls for repeating history again.

Cooper hears his rhythmic heartbeat, who then amplifies the rhythm over a microphone. As everyone listens to it and Prince D creates a rhythmic beat with it, other trolls began joining in with clapping, stomping, and other forms of sound-making, thus reviving the power of their music. Poppy encourages everyone to sing together as their colors are restored; Realizing how important other forms of music are, and encouraged by her father Thrash, Barb joins in, regaining her colors, and eagerly accepts Poppy's offer of friendship. Branch finally professes his love to Poppy, who reciprocates his feelings, and everyone performs together; all Trolls finally reunited while celebrating their differences.

In a mid-credits scene, Bridget and King Gristle arrive at the Pop Troll village, unaware of the events that have occurred and worried they have missed the party.

Pre-Production [ ]

On February 28, 2017, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced a sequel to the 2016 film Trolls, with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reprising their roles as Poppy and Branch. [1] In March 2017, podcasters the McElroy brothers began campaigning for roles in the film via a podcast titled "The McElroy Brothers Will Be in Trolls 2". [2] Following the campaign's success, DreamWorks confirmed in September 2018 that the McElroy brothers would make cameo appearances in World Tour. [3]

Production [ ]

The film saw the additions of Sammy Rockwell, Anthony Ramos, Jamie Dornan, Karan Soni and Flula Borg to the cast in May 2018. Corden, Icona Pop, Funches, and Nayyar also reprised their roles. [4] On June 12, 2018, the film was retitled as Trolls World Tour. [5] [6] In October 2018, it was confirmed that Kelly Clarkson had joined the cast, and would perform an original song. [7] In June 2019, along with promotional posters, new cast members were been announced, which include: J Balvin, Mary J. Blige, Rachel Bloom, George Clinton, Ester Dean, and Gustavo Dudamel.

Along with Timberlake, Clarkson, Paak, Blige, and Clinton, songs would be provided by Chris Stapleton and SZA.

Post-Production [ ]

In June 2019, along with promotional posters, new cast members have been announced, which include: J Balvin, Mary J. Blige, Rachel Bloom, George Clinton, Ester Dean, and Gustavo Dudamel.

The first single from the movie's soundtrack, "The Other Side", by Timberlake and SZA, was released on February 26, 2020. The Trolls: World Tour Soundtrack was released on March 14, 2020.

Release [ ]

Trolls: World Tour was simultaneously originally going to be released theatrically in USA on April 10, 2020 by Universal Pictures . [8] It was previously set for the said release date, but was pushed up to February 14, 2020 before being moved back to July 17, 2020. Following the delay of No Time to Die, it was yet again pushed up to its current date. [1] [9]

The film was originally going to be released on April 17, 2020. It was to be released on March 29 in Korea and France, but due to a flu sickness, the films industry's workers were nearly sick, it was pushed forward 2 months; the new release date is now June 17. On March 16, Universal announced that the film would be available for rental on digital platforms the same day as the film's theatrical release as a result of the situation. [10] This move was met with swift and intense backlash from John Fithian, chief of the National Association of Theatre Owners, saying in full: "Only Universal, and only on Trolls, did one studio skip the theatrical model and go straight to the home. Universal continues to advertise to consumers that Trolls will be released simultaneously to theaters and the home on April 10. And they are lying to consumers. Universal knows that theaters will temporarily be closed on April, so unlike every other distributor who must simply delay their releases in that time period, but still understand that theatrical release is essential to their business model, Universal on Trolls didn't make that decision. Exhibitors will not forget this. With the exception of Universal, every studio has gone overboard to reassure exhibitors that the theatrical model works for them, and that they look forward to releasing their movies theatrically once the viruses/germs and done. And every one of those studios called their exhibition partners and talked through their plans for delayed release before they announced them. Only Universal on Trolls undermined the theatrical model. And Universal told no exhibitor about their plans on Trolls: World Tour until approximately 18 minutes before their announcement. Exhibitors know who their partners are. And every other studio has demonstrated true partnership and belief in the theatrical model during this time of situation, and indeed all moviegoers around USA". [11]

Marketing [ ]

On June 19, 2019, DreamWorks released 21 character posters for the film, along with promotional film stills. On June 20, the first trailer was released. [12]

A second trailer was released in November 14, 2019. A third trailer was released on March 14, 2020, featuring the new release date.

Box Office [ ]

As of April 13, 2020, Trolls: World Tour has grossed $60,000 in USA and Canada, and $1.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.9 million.

In the U.S., the film made about $60,000 in its opening weekend from 25 drive-in theaters. Following its debut digital streaming weekend, it was reported by FandangoNow that the film had set the record for most streams on a release weekend by the company. The film also finished number one for Amazon Prime, Comcast, Apple TV, Vudu, YouTube, and DirecTV Now, with Universal reporting it was purchased 10-times more than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , which had made $2-3 million on its first day. The film made at least an estimated $40 million over the weekend, with Universal still to report official figures. Deadline Hollywood estimated that due to the film's approximate $90 million production cost, plus another $30 million spent on marketing (although rival studios claim Universal spent more than that), the film could break-even if 9–12 million people rent the film, resulting in about $200 million in revenue.

  • This also marks DreamWorks Animation's second franchise to have each installment distributed by a different studio over the years ( 20th Century distributed the first movie in 2016).
  • This is DreamWorks Animation 's fifth musical film, following The Prince of Egypt , Joseph: King of Dreams , The Road to El Dorado , and the first film, Trolls .
  • The film was first titled Trolls 2, but on June 12, 2018, it was retitled Trolls: World Tour.
  • This is the first Trolls film to be distributed by Universal Pictures.
  • This is the second DreamWorks Animation sequel not to have its music score composed by the same composer as its predecessor after Penguins of Madagascar (which was composed by Lorne Balfe); Christophe Beck composed the music score for the first film while Theodore Shapiro takes over for this film, making it the second DreamWorks Animation film to be scored by the aforementioned composer after Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie .
  • The scene in the first teaser when Poppy sings The Sound of Silence is an alternate shot from the original film.
  • This film marks the first time the new MPA logo appears in the end credits for a DreamWorks Animation film or a Universal Pictures animated film.
  • This is also the sixth DreamWorks Animation film with a non-human cast after Shark Tale , the Kung Fu Panda films, and the original film of Trolls .
  • This was the first Universal Pictures release to be available for rental on digital platforms on the same day as its theatrical release.
  • The film celebrates Dreamworks Animation's 25th anniversary.
  • Thus, it is also Universal Pictures' third animated theatrical sequel film not to have a number in the title after An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World .
  • Whilst having the new MPA logo in the credits, this is the first time in a DreamWorks Animation film where the Green Is Universal and Dolby Vision + Atmos are used.
  • This is the first DreamWorks Animation film to be released in the 2020s.
  • Both Sam Rockwell and Anthony Ramos would later star together as Mr. Wolf and Mr. Snake in The Bad Guys.

The gameplay is similar to past installments of the Mario Golf series. Players have to hit shots while taking into account character attributes, wind, weather, and course topography. The power, accuracy, and spin of shots are determined by the timing when the player taps buttons or the touch screen as a target line slides up and down the power meter. A simplified control system, like the Auto control system from Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour , returns where the player has to worry only about the power of the shot, at the expense of being unable to add topspin or backspin. The touch screen can now be used for selecting clubs, initiating shots, and adding spin. Plus, the trajectory of the shot can be altered by moving the circle pad or by using the touch screen as the shot meter is in motion; this is similar to the impact zone feature of past games. A new feature, known as Item Shots , allows players to hit shots with different effects via items. These include burning through trees with a Fire Flower , creating Note Blocks over water hazards, ignoring wind via Bullet Bill , increasing draw or fade by Boomerang , and freezing the terrain with an Ice Flower . These items can be collected by hitting ? Blocks on the course, although players sometimes start holes with items.

The game includes 13 default characters as well as four unlockable characters, with an additional four as downloadable content, making a total of 21 characters. When the bonus characters are unlocked or downloaded, they immediately get a star rank. Miis , Toad , Kamek , Paratroopa , Gold Mario , Toadette , Nabbit , and Rosalina are playable for the first time in the Mario Golf series, though Gold Mario cannot be used in 100 Coins challenges. In addition, Daisy , Boo , Bowser Jr. , Diddy Kong , and Birdo are playable in a handheld console Mario Golf installment for the first time, after previously being playable in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour . With the discontinuation of digital purchases for Nintendo 3DS in March 2023, it is no longer possible to buy the downloadable characters, though they can still be downloaded by those who purchased them when they were available.

Below is a table of the playable characters. Note that Height is on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being the lowest-flying shot and 10 being the highest. Sweet Spot and Control are out of 11. When a character curves the ball, it is either called a fade or draw. A fade is when the ball curves in the direction of the dominant hand and a draw is when the ball curves opposite the direction of the dominant hand. When a shot is used with a curve on a hole with a higher surface, the ball can either over-curve or under-curve, resulting in misplacing of the ball.

Stronger Star versions of the default characters can be unlocked by beating them in their respective character match in Challenges mode.

These characters can be obtained by collecting a specific amount of Star Coins in Challenge Mode, after all Mario World courses are unlocked.

Downloadable

Customizable, non-playable.

These characters appear as either non-playable characters in Castle Club that players can interact with or as background elements in many of the various golf courses in the game.

Customizable gear

There is a variety of purchasable gear that can be used to customize the player's Mii that will affect their stats. The game will have 500 customizable gear items. If a player equips a Mii with a full character gear set the Mii will play similarly to that character. At first, participating in tournaments is the only way players can unlock gear that are not available in the store. But it will start selling them once a major tournament has ended. However, players have to enter major tournaments to earn clothing sets themed after these tournaments.

Various items can be used during gameplay to affect the player's shots. At the start of the game, the player is given the number of items equivalent to the number of holes being played on divided by three. More can be received when the player hits the ball through ? Blocks , which give the player random items. If the ball goes through a box with a picture of an item on it, the player gets that item. In player-tournaments, a set amount of items can be chosen for the tournament players to receive before starting.

Mario Golf: World Tour has the most courses of all Mario Golf games, with 16, including the downloadable courses, making a total of 234 holes. The Castle Club courses have 18 holes and have championships that the Mii can compete in against other Super Mario characters. The Mario World Courses contain gimmicks based on different Super Mario games and have nine holes. All these courses can be accessed through both Mario Golf (quick round) and Castle Club. The six downloadable courses, which could be bought with real money, are taken from the Nintendo 64 game with updated music and graphics. Some of these courses have changed appearances to look like specific worlds from New Super Mario Bros. U .

With the discontinuation of digital purchases for Nintendo 3DS in March 2023, it is no longer possible to buy the downloadable courses, though they can still be downloaded by those who purchased them when they were available.

There are two main modes of play: Mario Golf (Quick Round), and Castle Club.

Mario Golf (Quick Round) is similar to past Mario Golf games, where the player can select a Mushroom Kingdom character or a customized Mii. It features a variety of modes such as Single Player (including Stroke Play, Match Play, Speed Golf, and Point Tourney, all of which provide coins for the player), Vs. (Local Play, Online Friends, and Community Match), and Tournaments (Mario Open and user-created Private Tournaments). Additional regional and worldwide online tournaments are available on the entry floor of the Castle Club.

Single Player

This mode allows players to take on a round by themselves, and against the clock or a computer opponent, as well as Challenges, where courses, Star characters, and Mii costumes can be unlocked. The first four modes allow the player to select any unlocked course. The following settings can be adjusted: number of holes (three, six, nine, or 18), order of holes (normal or mixed), wind strength, whether or not to use items or club slots or have coins on the course, whether to start from hole 1 or hole 10 (when playing the holes in normal order), what tees to start from (regular, back, or tournament), and whether or not to display the shot trajectory. Playing rounds may earn the player Best Badges and will randomly unlock Mii Gear for the player's Mii to use.

Stroke Play

A standard round of golf, where the player's score is compared to par.

The player competes against a computer-controlled opponent. The winner of the round is whichever player wins more holes, although if the players are tied by the end of the game, it will proceed into Sudden Death and go through the selected course again until someone wins. The player may choose the opponents skill level, ranging in five different varieties, two of which need to be unlocked.

Lakitu and a Mii in Speed Golf

Instead of counting strokes, the player's score is determined by how much time is taken to sink the ball.

Point Tourney

Scored via a modified version of the Stableford scoring system . The player is awarded eight points for an albatross or a hole in one, five for an eagle, three for a birdie, two for a par, and one for a bogey. A double bogey or worse scores zero.

Each of the game's courses, including downloadable courses, have ten Star Coin challenges and ten Moon Coin challenges (the latter are more difficult, and unlocked by earning 90 Star Coins). They take the following forms:

This is the game's multiplayer mode. Local play is available for up to four players, but it does not support download play. During multiplayer, all players play at the same time, which speeds up play significantly because players do not have to wait until it is their turn to play. However, all players must finish the hole before they are allowed to move on. Players can see the ghost shots of other players and on-screen icons also show how the player's shots measure with the other players' in terms of distance. Players can send taunts or cheers to each other by pressing icons, as well as emoticons. Matches with online friends and community matches can also be played from this menu.

Skins Match

In addition to Stroke Play, Match Play, Speed Golf, and Point Tourney from the single-player mode, Skins Matches are playable, though exclusive to multiplayer. They are very similar to Match Play in that the goal is to earn the most points. However, this mode can be played by 2-4 players, and rather than having a set point goal, the player with the most points after a set number of holes wins. This mode does not support simultaneous play.

The lobby of the Castle Club mode in Mario Golf: World Tour.

To the left of the Caddie Master's booth is the Royal Garden, which has pipes leading to the six Mario World courses, and a passageway to the Royal Room. Entering these pipes will put the player in a practice round on any of the courses, where the player uses the front tees, starts out with a few items and can grab more from Item Boxes around the course, and hits the ball through coins that appear as well. At the far left of this garden is an aura which will summon Kamek when the player approaches it. Kamek can exchange play coins for game coins, change his/her dominant hand, allow mulligans (the ability to redo strokes), or change the player's swing type, all at a cost of a huge amount of coins. After all three course championships are won, Costume Challenges will begin appearing in the Royal Garden, where players can unlock costumes by completing objectives such as collecting a certain amount of coins, finishing in a short period of time, and beating a target score using Club Slots, all on Mario World courses. Unlike in Quick Round, where the challenges only cover three specific holes and the front or back tees are used, Costume Challenges take place on all nine holes and tournament tees are used. To the right of the main course entrances is an area with entrances to training grounds where players can take a golf tutorial (no gate) and practice their drives (purple gate), approaches (blue gate), and putts (green gate). The practice sessions come in different levels, and the goal is get the ball as close to the pin as possible -- or even sink the ball -- to earn practice points. Succeeding 20 times in the training games each for drives, approaches, and putts will give the player costumes of Bee Mario , Cloud Mario , and Boomerang Mario respectively. Past the practice grounds is the entrance to Sky Island , where the player takes on the One-On, One-Putt challenge, which requires the player to get the ball onto the green in one shot, then putt that ball in the next for nine consecutive holes. If the ball misses the green or just lands on the fringe, or the putt is missed at any point, the challenge is failed. Upon completion, the course will be unlocked and a 18-hole version can be played in Castle Club in its stead. Taking the One-On, One-Putt challenge again and clearing all 18 holes will award the player with a Propeller Mario costume.

Toad's Booth

Hosted by a blue Toad, this is primarily where players can purchase downloadable content. Records for each game mode, including the number of eagles, albatrosses, and holes-in-one made, can also be viewed here. Players can also visit this booth to learn how to play the game, and see a glossary of golf terminology.

Online tournaments

The gold Castle Tournament trophy from Mario Golf: World Tour.

Mario Golf: World Tour features a variety of online tournaments for players to take part in. They can either be made by Nintendo with golf gear as participation prizes (barring DLC tournaments), by other players from across the world in the form of Private Tournaments, or made by Callaway Golf in partnership with Nintendo. SpotPass must be turned on for tournaments to be entered.

After playing through a tournament, the player must upload their score in order for it to be ranked (by score then order of submission) in the leaderboard which can be viewed at any time during the tournament period. Tournaments can be played an infinite amount of times until the deadline has been met, allowing for continuous improvement of a player's score. Most tournaments last for two weeks, those on downloadable courses are one week long, and major tournaments last for almost a month. After a deadline ends for a tournament, the final standings can be viewed in an award ceremony, and both a trophy (gold for the top 10%, silver for the top 20-30%, and bronze for the top 40-60%) and coins are received depending on how the player places. Gaining a trophy in certain regional or worldwide tournaments will allow the player to enter one of four yearly major worldwide tournaments (such as the Castle Tournament or Star Open) that reward the player with a more impressive trophy and a larger coin payout.

Trophies earned from Regional and World Tournaments in the Castle Club appear on the shelf at the back of the trophy hall (a maximum of ten normal trophies can be on display at any one time), and trophies from major tournaments appear in the glass display towards the center of the room. Gold trophies appear beside the screen in the middle, silver ones are seen farther from it, and bronze ones are placed at the far sides of the hall. World tournament trophies appear towards the middle and those for regional tournaments are placed at the sides. The higher the end ranking the player got in a tournament, the closer to the middle its trophy is placed.

Official online tournaments were concluded with World Tour Final, which started on December 20, 2018, and ended on January 10, 2019. Despite this, official online DLC tournaments remained available, with the final DLC Trial Tour 98 on Mario's Star having entries allowed until December 31, 2030, a placeholder date which stayed until the Nintendo Network service was shutdown on April 8, 2024.

The types of Official online tournaments that were created are listed below:

Regional Tournaments

In the Castle Club's basement, the player's Mii can go into a pipe on the red entry machine to join Regional Tournaments. These restrict participants to those in the chosen region(s). The clothing prizes for these tournaments are obtained individually, and are themed after the playable characters (not the downloadable ones), and some enemies and items. Additionally, Callaway Golf has teamed up with Nintendo to produce Callaway-based regional tournaments, which will give the players sponsored Callaway Gear for the Mii to equip during the tournaments and to keep afterwards.

World Tournaments

On the other side of the Castle Club's basement, the blue entry machine has a pipe leading to World Tournaments, which pit the player against the whole world. The clothing prizes for these tournaments are earned in complete sets and designed like Nintendo gaming devices and themed after the major tournaments.

Major tournaments are like the expert tournaments, only that the flight path is turned on. Four of these happen every year. The Castle Tournament is in the Forest Course, the Star Open is in the Seaside Course, and the Moon Open is in the Mountain Course. In these tournaments, the holes are played in the regular order. The World Championship takes place on all three courses at once, six holes being played on for each course, and the holes are done in a mixed order.

In addition to Castle Club Tournaments, Nintendo has also created Mario Open tournaments which allow the use of Super Mario characters, and are played on Mario World courses and downloadable courses. Tournaments in this category cover nine holes, so on the downloadable courses, either the front nine or back nine are played on. All of these tournaments are world tournaments, but they award pieces of clothing for the Mii in the same way as the regional tournaments. Mario Open tournaments are stroke-play or coin-collecting tournaments, and when there are no item restrictions, players start out with three different items. Fixed-character tournaments limit players to using a specific character, and that character is not allowed to have a star rank. In limited-item tournaments, players can only use a particular item, and they start out with five of it. Players can also make their own unofficial Mario Open tournaments under rules of their choice for other players to enjoy.

Downloadable content

Mario Golf: World Tour was one of two Mario games on the 3DS to provide paid DLC, the other being New Super Mario Bros 2 .

On April 17th, a demo of the game was released on the Nintendo eShop for Europe, making this strictly the second Super Mario game (preceded by Mario & Luigi: Dream Team ) to have a publicly released demo for download. The demo was later released in North America on April 24. It uses 873 blocks when downloaded and offers ten uses (fifteen for the North American demo).

The demo lets the player go through a tutorial covering camera and shot control or play through either holes 1, 2, and 3 of Seaside Course , holes 1, 2, and 6 of Wiggler Park , and holes 1, 5, and 6 of Yoshi Lake . The demo also allows the player to play the Star Coin Collector mode on hole 9 of Peach Gardens , and the Ring Master mode on hole 14 of Mountain Course . The only playable characters available are Mario , Peach , Yoshi , and Bowser .

Critical reception

Mario Golf: World Tour has received generally positive reviews among critics. IGN gave the game a score of 8.6/10 (a "great" rating). They praised the game's learning curve, training options, quantity of unlockables, and multiplayer, but criticized the map in Castle Club, saying it was "confusing". [3] Joystiq gave 3 stars out of 5, being more critical, while praising the basic gameplay and online options, criticizing the Castle Club, opining it as sparse and dispensable, while also opining that the game as a whole was too safe in its approach. [4] Thomas Whitehead of Nintendo Life compared Mario Golf: Word Tour favorably to Mario Tennis Open . He praised the game for a perceived sense of attention to detail, as well as its skill curve. He gave the game a score of 9/10. [5] The game was scored 83% by Official Nintendo Magazine. [6] Mario Golf: World Tour currently averages a score of 78 out of a possible 100 on Metacritic. [7]

Regional differences.

Diddy Kong gets an Albatross in Mario Golf: World Tour. Notice the missing "!!".

In the British English version of Mario Golf: World Tour , the exclamation marks are missing from the animation for Birdie , Eagle , and Albatross . One is present in the Hole-in-One animation, however. The Hole-in-One text that appears in both English versions are different, the British English version having "HOLE-IN-ONE!", whereas the American English version has "HOLE IN ONE!!", leaving out the dashes.

Bowser Jr. in Mario Golf: World Tour.

The character select screen also has multiple differences in the distance for each character, as the letters size vary for different versions, with the British English letters being bigger than the American English letters. The abbreviation for "Yards" is also different, with the American English version having "yd." and leaves a space between it and the number, whereas the British English region uses a "yd" abbreviation with no space between the numbers and letters.

Pre-release and unused content

A screenshot of Mario Golf: World Tour

In some pre-release screenshots, the animations for " Birdie " or " Bogey " had orange circles and letters, whereas in the final game, they're blue. The letters and wording was also different in the final version, with different colors, fonts and sizes. Many holes where different, either moved or changed completely. Dark transparent boxes were also added behind the wording of certain course information, and some things were moved to different parts of the screen.

Mario Golf: World Tour was created by staff at both Camelot and Nintendo, with localization teams from both Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe also involved, the latter organization involving sixteen translators to bring the game to a variety of languages. Both Shigeru Miyamoto and Koji Kondo were involved as supervisors. Finally, while she was not listed in the game's credits, Kerri Kane portrayed Rosalina via recycled and previously unused voice clips from her earlier work on Mario Kart 7 . [8]

Trolls World Tour

  • View history

Trolls World Tour (also known as Trolls 2: World Tour or just Trolls 2 ) is a 2020 American 3D computer-animated musical comedy film, the sequel to the 2016 film Trolls , and the second film in the DreamWorks Trolls franchise. It was directed by Walt Dohrn with co-direction by David P. Smith , produced by Gina Shay , and written by Jonathan Aibel , Glenn Berger , Elizabeth Tippet , Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky . The film stars Anna Kendrick , Justin Timberlake , Rachel Bloom , James Corden , Ron Funches , Kelly Clarkson , Anderson .Paak , Sam Rockwell , George Clinton and Mary J. Blige .'

The film was first given a sneak preview at the Licensing Expo 2019. [6] Produced as the 38th full-length animated feature by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, it was set to be theatrically released in the United States on April 10, 2020, [7] but due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it was released on digital platforms instead. It was later decided to release the movie on demand. As the pandemic receded, the film was released back in regular movie theatres.

It involves Poppy and Branch as they discover some new Troll tribes that represent the music genres aside from their own tribe. The film also focuses on an event named "Queen Barb's Rock World Tour", of which the title " Trolls World Tour " is a reference to.

The movie had a number of trademarks registered in addition, dated from 6/4/2019.

A sequel titled " Trolls Band Together " is set to be released in November 17, 2023 [8] , but official production and concept development remain ambiguous. [9] Justin Timberlake claimed in April 2020 that they wish to make a total of seven Trolls movies, which made a third Trolls movie highly likely. [10]

It's all glitter and happiness in Troll Village until Queen Poppy and Branch make a surprising discovery - there are other Troll species beyond their own, each defined by a different genre of music. When a mysterious threat puts all the Trolls across the land in danger, Poppy, Branch, and their band of friends must embark on an epic quest through unfamiliar terrain to do the impossible: create harmony among the diverse Trolls to unite them against certain doom.

The movie begins at Techno Reef , where the Techno Trolls gather for a massive rave as their leader King Trollex is about to drop his latest song One More Time . After the song drops and the Techno Trolls enjoy their music, a shadow approaches in the distance.

King Trollex stops the party and approaches by himself. Queen Barb of the Rock Trolls greets him, and tells him to hand over the Techno String . When Trollex refuses to do so, she and her Rock Trolls attack. They send the Techno Trolls flying and destroy Trollex's DJ booth. To try and limit the damage and preserve his peoples' vibe, Trollex agrees to hand the String. Barb tells him that when she's done, they're all going to have the same vibe.

At Troll Village , Queen Poppy begins her morning routine and starts singing Trolls Wanna Have Good Times , the Trolls ' morning medley. During this, Branch starts to think about taking his and Poppy's relationship to the next level and states he just has to get the guts to tell her she is the one. He joins in the medley. During the medley, Poppy and her friends witness the birth of Tiny Diamond , Guy Diamond 's newborn son who turns out to be a Hip hop Troll . The medley continues as the Trolls now celebrate his birth.

At the end of the medley, Poppy and Branch see everyone off about their day. Branch then tries to talk to Poppy and tell her how he feels but he can't say the words, Poppy ends up revealing that she considers him a friend. The word "friend" echoes in his mind and he zones out. Trying to make up for it, the two try and high-five each other but fail, though Poppy then succeeds with Fuzzbert .

Their attention is turned to Biggie , who's being attacked by a bat . Poppy takes it away from him but now has it in her hair. Branch calms the bat down and attention is drawn to a message it was carrying. Poppy reads about a big event Queen Barb of the Rock Trolls is hosting and to bring the Strings. An anxious King Peppy takes the message from her and attempts to destroy it, but Branch calms him down. Peppy explains that other Trolls besides them exist, and they're called "Pop Trolls". This makes sense to them, and they all nod in agreement. Poppy wants to hear more about the other Trolls, but Peppy explains that they're very different from them, while Cooper takes note of Peppy's words about there being different Trolls. He causes the entire village to freak out when he says some don't understand the concept of "Hammertime".

The group breaks down to Poppy and The Snack Pack members. Peppy explains that in the beginning, everything was boring until a Troll made a note that caught everyone's attention. This was the start of the Trolls love for music and they took six Strings, one for each type of music: Techno, Funk, Classical, Country, Hard Rock and Pop. Then over time, arguments broke out over their differences leading to arguments. The Tribes' elders decided it was best each Tribe took a string and go their separate ways, and ever since the Tribes have been isolated from each other.

Peppy shows them the String, which he explains has a lot of power. Peppy wants to run and hide while Poppy wants to go meet Barb, whom she thinks is trying to unite the Trolls again. Peppy and Poppy get into a row over what is best. Later that night, Poppy goes to sneak out in Sheila Balloon , but is caught by Branch. Cooper hears them talking and watches from a nearby bush. Poppy unties the balloon and starts to float away. Branch is unable to just let her go, so he jumps into the balloon. After they leave, Cooper realizes one of the Trolls looks just like him; he leaves Pop Village to find them.

The next morning, Barb leaves the Ocean and arrives onshore singing Crazy Train . She nips into her Angler Bus and shows off the Techno String. She places it into her guitar, converting it to the Rock String's power. As she sits down, she thinks her father King Thrash is missing, but it turns out that he's just in the toilet. As he leaves, she explains to the senile old Troll the plan to get the Strings and play the Ultimate Power Chord. The Old King goes to do the Rock hand gesture, but needs Riff 's help to finish it.

Poppy and Branch try to fly the balloon, but the manual is big and Poppy tries to learn without it, which leads Sheila to tell her to stop. They discover Biggie has stowed away on the Balloon, hidden under the cotton candy Poppy brought with her, since Mr. Dinkles was attracted to it. Poppy explains they're going to help Barb unite the Trolls.

As they approach Symphonyville , they discover that Barb has already arrived ahead of them and everything is in ruins. Pennywhistle , the sole survivor, tells them that Barb took their string from Trollzart and all the Classical Trolls , leaving nothing left behind - they lost everything. Poppy comes to the realization Barb wants to destroy all music. Biggie freaks out over this, so Poppy does a Pinky Promise that no matter what she will protect him.

Meanwhile, as they leave the mountains, Barb's bat "Debbie" returns to her owner, carrying a reply from Poppy and having been given a makeover to the horror of Barb herself. Barb reads Poppy's message saying she hopes to be best friends with Barb, but Barb doesn't understand how someone can be friends as it takes years to form a friendship. Just then, a glitter bomb goes off in Barb face, and Barb has a rant about Pop music. When her father starts to sing the Pop song from the message, Barb has had enough and brings in the Bounty Hunters Chaz the Smooth Jazz Troll , Tresillo and his reggaeton Trolls , The K-Pop Gang and The Yodellers . She explains that she plans to make Rock the dominant music, but will spare whoever brings her Queen Poppy and let them have a tiny territory, stressing to Tresillo when he comments on the size that's the offer. Only the Yodellers didn't show to the meeting, but Barb is confident they'll bring in Poppy as she burns Poppy's message.

The Pop Trio arrive at Lonesome Flats , home of the Country Trolls . At first, there is no one around, but high noon hits and the mayor, Delta Dawn , appears singing Born to Die , which brings out all the Country Trolls. Poppy comments that the song is sad. Branch likes it, but Poppy thinks they don't know that music is supposed to make them happy. Delta feels sorry for the trio as they "look like they were beaten up by a rainbow", and isn't bothered by them. Poppy attempts to cheer them up by singing a medley that covers all the most important songs. Soon the three find themselves alone as the Country Trolls hide from their music.

Delta throws the three in jail for "Crimes against music". When Poppy warns Delta about Barb, Delta isn't worried about her. Poppy has to face that some Trolls don't want to have fun and Branch tries to cheer her up. They begin "plan B", and Branch and Biggie start to dig their way out with the intent to return home. Hickory abruptly shows up and busts the trio out. They escape on the Jail door as Delta, Clampers Buttonwillow , Growley Pete and a number of other Country Trolls give chase.

The four Trolls ride over the edge of a ravine to escape Delta. After falling into the river below, Delta is annoyed that they escaped. The four Trolls survive the fall into the river, with Mr. Dinkles being pulled back from a near-death experience by Biggie. Branch has questions as to why their new friend helped. Hickory explains he didn't think it was fair they rushed to discriminate against the Pop Trolls. He builds them a boat to make getting to the Funk Trolls faster.

During the river journey, Branch wonders in mistrust about Hickory, but Poppy is fine with him and wonders if Branch is questioning her judgement. As the Trolls settle for the evening, Chaz attacks. The three Pop Trolls are put under a trance and when they snap out of it, they're tied up. Hickory kicks Chaz off the boat, thus saving them as he put gumdrops in his ears to block out the noise of Chaz's smooth jazz music. Biggie freaks out as it's clear Poppy cannot keep them safe, thus breaking her Pinky Promise. He leaves to head back to Pop Village.

Meanwhile, Cooper is lost in the desert and tries to drink from a mirage. He snaps out as he's taken by a strange force.

On the river, Hickory sings I Fall to Pieces and confronts Branch over his obvious feelings for Poppy. Branch notes he tried to tell her how he felt about her but failed. Hickory notes of the two of them that Branch is doing all the listening, thus she may not even hear him right now. They come across a large object in the sky and are taken by a bubble beam, with Branch and Hickory landing hits on each other as they try to fight it.

The three arrive in the flying city of Vibe City , and are greeted by a Funk Troll whom they think is Cooper. He turns out to be Prince D , Cooper's twin brother. Cooper introduces them to King Quincy and Queen Essence , his parents. When D states he's half-Hip Hop, Poppy questions her map, which D comments is likely out of date. Branch notes it still has Disco on it. When Poppy speaks about how they're all alike, Quincy states they're not. Poppy suggests to combine their efforts, with Quincy stating that they'll do anything but that.

They then reveal the true history of the Strings. Prince D sings It's All Love (History of Funk) and explains that in the past, what broke the Tribes up was the Pop Trolls themselves. The Pop Trolls stole the six strings to play only remixes of all the other music. The other Trolls finally got their Strings back, but the damage was done and everyone no longer trusted that this wouldn't happen again, so they split.

When the song finishes, Quincy and Essence explains that denying their differences would be denying who the truth of who they are. Poppy comments they hadn't thought about this. The alarm goes off and the Funk Trolls prepare for battle as Rock has arrived. Cooper sends his friends on their way to protect them, despite Poppy's plea to let them help. As the trio leaves, the Funk Trolls are plunged into darkness as Riff pulls the plug on their lights.

As the trio float away from Vibe City, they see the Rock Trolls arriving and Poppy wants to go back. Branch finally puts his foot down and tells Poppy its time to go home. Poppy defends herself as wanting to prove she is a good queen, but Branch points out a good queen listens and she has not been, not to her father, not to Biggie, not to Quincy and not even to him. He has backed her up throughout the journey even when she was wrong. He replies he heard back there that differences do matter - like them.

As their bubble lands and bursts, the two have a fight and Branch leaves for home and abandons Poppy, stating as he departs that she's the most important person to him right now. Sad, Branch begins to sing Perfect For Me , a song in the vein of the Country Trolls' sad style. Poppy joins in despite them being far apart at this point. When Branch finishes the song, The K-Pop Gang arrive and capture him. They demand he takes them to Poppy, but Tresillo and his Reggaeton Trolls interfere. The two groups can't live without their music and dance off against each other for Branch. Branch stops them and makes a proposal.

Poppy meanwhile reflects on her thoughts with the String. She puts it away when Hickory arrives, but in her despair at the situation accidentally pulls it out in front of Hickory. It is then revealed Hickory, along with his brother Dickory have been pretending to be a Country Troll together to get close to Poppy. Dickory tries to take the String while Hickory attempts to help Poppy. Their yodelling grabs Barb's attention, and Poppy is snatched by Carol and another Rock Troll. Dickory hands Barb the Pop String and Barb confronts her worry, commenting on how short Poppy is compared to her and how she didn't know why she was worried about her. As the two interact, Barb reveals she has already attacked Pop Village.

Biggie arrives at the village, and finds the surviving members of The Snack Pack. They make costumes and attempt to break into the Rock Trolls' home to rescue Poppy. During their intrusion though, Sid Fret and another Rock Troll catch them. The group convinces them that they're also Rock Trolls, but this lands them into Barb's backup band. Smidge comments "We're screwed".

Elsewhere, Barb brags to Poppy about how she's basically won and asks if Poppy enjoys being Barb's best friend as a mockery of Poppy's earlier message, Poppy comments they are not friends. Barb reflects that as a Queen she's used to hearing people, telling her what she wants to hear and not really being friends. She puts the Pop String in the guitar and comments she'll play the Ultimate Power Chord, then Poppy will see what happens.

On stage, Barb sings Barracuda while The Snack Pack pretends to play along in fear, while Peppy and the Funk twins are hurried forward to the front. When attention is drawn to them, Biggie smashes a guitar shouting "Barracuda" and it seems to get attention off of them. Barb then introduces the Trolls to their former leaders, calling Pop "the worst of all". As Barb goes to play the Ultimate Power Chord and hit Poppy with the power of her guitar, she is hit with the balloon manual as Shelia Balloon appears carrying Branch, the K-Pop Gang and the Reggaeton Trolls. This proves to be a temporary setback as Barb begins to play again. Branch swings over to Poppy and throws himself in the way, where he was a large boulder falls to the ground. When it smashes open, Branch has been converted into a Rock Zombie.

Barb is hooked up to an Angler Bus and flies around the stage converting the other leaders into Rock Zombies. She turns back to Poppy who has opened her cage, she gets Branch to use his mullet to grab her and then hits Poppy with the Power Chord. At first it appears as though Poppy is converted, Barb hands her the Guitar so she can convert Peppy and the Funk Twins, the final members of the leaders' family, but Poppy turns to face Barb. Poppy used gumdrops to protect herself from Barb's Power Chord. Poppy tells Barb that she won't let anyone else be converted. Riff interrupts and speaks up against Barb, questioning how anyone could know they're cool if they all look the same, as some of the Rock Trolls see Poppy and Riff's point of the outlook and agree.

Poppy also tells Barb that a good queen listens and that real harmony takes a lot of different voices. She proceeds to destroy the guitar, snapping the Strings and reverting Branch, Queen Essence, King Quincy, Trollex, Delta Dawn and Trollzart, and her Rock Zombie appearances back to their normal selves. However, every Troll becomes grey in the process as the music fades from every Troll present, and with them the Trolls have lost all music, including rock. When Poppy goes to make sure Branch is okay after he was reverted from his Rock Zombie form, Barb witnesses in horror that the Strings have been destroyed as they fade away. Barb then puts the blame on Poppy, stating history has repeated itself with Pop ruining everything once again. Depressed, the Trolls take a moment to let it sit and face the fact that their music is gone, but Cooper feels a beat within him as he realizes that music is still in his now-glowing pink heart.

As Cooper uses a microphone to amplify the rhythmic heartbeat for everyone to hear, his brother Prince D begins to make a hook beatboxing sound as he joins in, with all the other Trolls witnessing this. Queen Essence notes that her sons are making music; Delta Dawn feels the beat with her lit-up heart as she begins to clap and stomp her feet along to the melody, who then turns to her Country Trolls who also join in. The beat continues as everyone's hearts light up while the Trolls begin a simple background harmony in unison. Essence states Barb can't take their music from them, while Quincy states that while it all started with the Strings, it now comes from within themselves. As the other Troll tribes vocalize melodically with all their hearts lit, Trollex says the music comes from their experiences, Delta adds their lives, and Essence adds their culture; Trollzart simply calls the harmony beautiful. Poppy finally understands the thing she hasn't grasped about differences, knowing Barb can't take away the music that is within all of them.

Now knowing that differences matter after all, Poppy steps forward and begins singing the song Just Sing . She's soon joined by Branch, both becoming the first to regain their colors. Barb asks Thrash what's happening, to which he replies that she must let everyone be what they want to be, as he plays music and regains his colors too. As Poppy and Branch continue singing, the other Tribe leaders join one by one; every Troll slowly recolors as they join in, until Barb is the sole remaining grey Troll. Near the end of the song, Barb finally joins, as she plays her guitar in which she recolors, her hair becoming rainbow-colored as she accepts other Trolls' music with the help of her father . Poppy's hair also colors up with rainbow colors, with the Trolls now united at last.

The song ends with all leaders standing side by side and an united Troll Kingdom. When Poppy said to Peppy that she should've listened to what he had to say and not run off, they settle their differences on the earlier row and he take pride in raising a strong and self-confident daughter, proclaiming himself as a "genius" parent. Meanwhile, Poppy tells Barb now she isn't forcing her and she'd like to be friends with her and Barb finally agrees. In the meantime, Branch concurs with Poppy and confesses his love to her, to which she states back she loves him too; the pair finally do a connected high-five, which begins their relationship as more than just friends. As the camera pans out, the pair can be seen kissing.

Back at Pop Village, Poppy tells the new version of Troll history on how their ancestors were wrong to young Trolls from each Tribe. She's joined by Branch as she says you can't harmonize alone. The two depart and the Pop Village celebration begins. The leaders of the Trolls interact, have fun, and Prince D and Branch sing Don't Slack . During the party, Cloud Guy meets a female cloud; they propose and then have a family. The song ends with Poppy and Branch riding into the sky, Debbie following them.

In the closing mid-credits scene, King Gristle Jr. and Bridget appear, having missed the Trolls' party.

Unused Voices

The following are the voice actors either mentioned by DreamWorks or related to the movie who were thought or meant to appear. They're listed to confirm their status:

  • Chance the Rapper was meant to have had a voice role, which was announced in November 2019. However, his name isn't featured in the movie's credits. [11] It was later confirmed he was meant to have originally done the role of Prince D. [12] Chance was announced at the same time as Sam Rockwell in May 2018. [13]
  • Gwen Stefani was cited by early reactions to be returning as DJ Suki . However, DreamWorks never confirmed her name in any related promotional material themselves. No information has since appeared to confirm if she was ever in the voice cast. [14] To date, the only evidence that Stefani was meant to return is the Stylin' DJ Suki doll. In addition, Trolls: TrollsTopia , whose first season was originally complete and ready to release 5 days after Trolls World Tour 's release, features DJ.

On February 28, 2017, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced a sequel to Trolls , with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reprising their respective roles as Poppy and Branch. [15]

In May 2017, podcasters The McElroy Brothers began campaigning for roles in the film via a podcast titled "The McElroy Brothers Will Be in Trolls 2". Following the campaign's success, DreamWorks confirmed in September 2018 that the brothers would make cameo appearances in Trolls World Tour . [16]

The film saw the additions of Sam Rockwell, Chance the Rapper, Anthony Ramos, Jamie Dornan, Karan Soni and Flula Borg to the cast in May 2018. James Corden, Icona Pop, Ron Funches, and Kunal Nayyar were also announced to reprise their roles. [17] On June 12, 2018, the film was retitled as Trolls World Tour . [18] In October 2018, it was confirmed that Kelly Clarkson had joined the cast, and will perform an original song. [19]

In June 2019, along with promotional posters, new cast members have been announced, which include J Balvin, Mary J. Blige, Rachel Bloom, George Clinton, Ester Dean and Gustavo Dudamel. [20] In June 20, 2019, the film's first official trailer was released online and on the DreamWorksTV's official YouTube channel. A second trailer was released on November 15, 2019.

Alongside Timberlake, Clarkson, .Paak, Blige and Clinton, songs were provided by Chris Stapleton and SZA.

On March 7, 2019, trademarks were placed on Trolls World Tour for books and magazines , clothing , toys, games and playthings , entertainment and prerecorded videos .

The film's third and final trailer was released online on March 7, 2020.

In an interview with Walt Dohrn, he noted that as soon as the film was over, the crew had been bittersweet about its completion, as they wanted to work on the sequel straight away. [21]

A note related to the development cycle of the film is that at the time Trolls: The Beat Goes On! was dealing with the Party Crashers storyline arch. There was a consequence of the film's production on the story arc, which caused a temporary pause at one point. This was because of Trolls World Tour being supposed to introduce new Troll Tribes, which limited what Trolls: The Beat Goes On! could do with the Party Crashers storyline. [22]

The marking custom animation to promote the film was provided from Minimo VFX & Jellyfish Pictures , who would do the animation for Spirit Untamed and have produced assets for The Boss Baby: Family Business and The Bad Guys .

Trolls World Tour was digitally released on video streaming platforms on April 10, 2020. The movie was also released in Digital HD on June 23, 2020, and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on July 7, 2020. The movie was also available to stream on the streaming service Peacock. [23]

Development

The main theme of Trolls World Tour is "differences" and how different people lead very different lives. As a result, some of the underlining themes are much darker and sinister than in Trolls . [24] The intention, however, was not to start out as purposely making a movie on cultural appropriation from the start. [25]

Each Tribe represents a different music, and thus a different culture and race of Trolls. Although they're all "Trolls", they're not all the same. Each Troll Tribe has its own look, behavior and music genre preferences, as well as reactions to life in general. The Trolls' music is used as a means to represent cultures getting along with each other, which is a reference to real-life cultures and their problems.

The main reactions to each Troll culture are represented by the two Queens Barb and Poppy. They have very extreme, but opposing points of views on their world. Poppy's inability to comprehend things that don't fit in her worldview results in her being unable to understand just how different they are; she experiences a culture shock when meeting other Trolls. Poppy wants to save them all, but her issues with understanding the different cultures get in the way. Meanwhile, Barb doesn't care, as she puts value of her own over the others, and thus wants to take away what they have and failing to understand how differences make things more interesting. While Poppy believes different music should unite the Trolls, Barb thinks that divides them, and the only way to get them united is all of them sharing the same music genre. As the film goes on, the differences of the different Trolls put strain even on the basics of Poppy's relationships, and even Branch questions their friendship when he finally speaks against her.

Barb's own campaign for world domination leaves her convinced she's correct, and the actions of her and her Rock Trolls are somewhat zealous. This referenced the fact that the writers had grown up among the Rock culture of the 1980s, where wearing something like a Judas Priest shirt would have made the wearer say "This is who I am."; this formed the basis of how the Rock Trolls acted. [25]

Some of the comments that Trolls make in the film are also real-life comments. It's common for Rock and Metal fans to criticize modern music, such as claiming that EDM is "not real music", while citing Rock and Metal as examples of real music. Likewise, Classical can be viewed as "boring" to many. All of Barb's comments during her temper tantrum at Poppy are real criticisms towards Pop music. Genres under the classification of "Techno" are often criticized as unreal music because of their lack of actual instruments, mostly relying on machines to do all the work, which results in just "bleeps and bloops". Meanwhile, sad songs are often criticized for being depressing, such as those exampled by Born to Die , as some people prefer music that's uplifting and gives good feelings. These criticisms the Trolls make at each other's music are a reflection of actual music fans and their criticisms at fans of other genres; it's used to reflect how people criticize others living against their own.

Smaller themes include history being written by the winners, as the Pop Trolls of the past hadn't accurately recorded their own involvement in the initial splitting of the Tribes. This was apparently kept in the script from early throughout production, as a means of showing a teenager growing up and realizing that what they had learned from their parents and culture was fake. The realization to the characters was real and powerful. [25]

Another small theme was making promises, such as the Pinky Promise when Poppy can't actually see it through.

For Barb and the Rock Trolls, their disdain towards Pop Trolls is a form of "ancestry shaming", wherein current living individuals are treated based on their ancestors' actions.

Though made in passing comment as a joke, the fact Disco Trolls may have once existed and have since gone extinct has also been noted as one of the many other darker tones of the movie, as it implies that entire subcultures of Trolls have disappeared over time.

Software Usage

The film was made and rendered using DreamWorks own software rending engine, as DreamWorks uses its own in-house software.

The fuzz was generated afterwards using an effect in MoonRay Render. [26]

The data for the production of the film was exchanged via a partnership with NetApp solutions, DreamWorks has been using this software for over 20 years, as it provides a number of services including cloud file exchange and storage for their files. The service had to provide DreamWorks with access to 1,200TB of file storage space and used nearly half a billion files, of which all were to be accessible and used by the creators of the movie. [27]

SketchCurve allowed the scene of Poppy with her hair wrapped around Debbie to be handled carefully, allowing bending of Poppy's hair in conjunction with Debbie

The hair of each Troll was created with several new tools, including ImportDrawOver and SketchCurve to render each curve of hair, along with another tool named Z-Depth Push , which was developed to handle positive and negative Z-depths relative to the camera. The movie made use of a number of custom cameras in conjunction with these tools to capture the right angles and depth. SketchCurve was used for scenes where hair was wrapped around targets, such as the scene where Poppy captures Debbie in Pop Village. Z-Depth Push allowed the rendering of the Strings whenever they were placed on Barb's guitar to be rendered in the correct 3D space. Certain stylers were modified to accomodate to the new features, such as Barb's mohawk transformation near the end of Just Sing , which used the Kink , Clump and Contract stylers. Funk Troll characters, mainly King Quincy and Queen Essence , needed a custom CurveJiggle tool to aid their rendering, handle the many individual segments and layers for their bodies, and control the bouncing in their movement. The Reggaeton Trolls had a handling different to that of other Trolls in order to help with their mesh and movements. [28]

A reading software was also developed, which read the data without allowing copying of it, improving rendering speed and using up less processing in the making. Overall, the movie was a more technically advanced than Trolls , and used some of the most advanced rendering tools at the time for its fur and fuzz details. [29]

Character Development

Impact of Technology on Character Development

Due to the changes in technology, a simple port of old model designs from Trolls wasn't completely possible. The team also made adjustments to Poppy's facial design. Just to make her eyes bigger changed a lot, especially as Walt Dohrn and David P. Smith are traditional artists. The characters in Trolls World Tour have more flexibility in their models, and move more like traditional cartoon characters rather than modern CGI ones. [21] The crew had to work with a lot of new models and import a lot of old ones into the new software. [30]

It was mentioned that a lot of scenes were fully animated, but to create a "snap" effect, frames were deleted to get a smooth yet instant effect. [31] Another cheat in scenes is when Poppy high-fives Branch after "Just Sing"; though she appears to motion many steps, she only took 5 in reality. The illusion of distance was created using zooming effects and glares. [32] The decision was made to turn off blur after the early trailers, which the film greatly benefitted from. [33]

Character Changes

The following Trolls had their names changed:

  • Queen Essence was originally named "Mama Bootsy".
  • Riff was going to be named "Spyke".
  • Chaz was originally named "Jax the Smooth Jazzer".
  • In addition, the name "Carol" was originally assigned for a child Rock Troll, who was later renamed Amp . "Carol" was later given to an adult Rock Troll .
  • Clampers Buttonwillow was originally named "Chompers".
  • Tadd was originally called "Coral Blush"; all the merchandise carried this name except The Art of DreamWorks Trolls World Tour which was never given a full release.

Tadd and his family weren't green, but instead both his father and him were blue while his mother was pink. Bliss Marina was also a generic blue Random Troll . Likewise, King Trollex had a green hoop around his neck and some slight color changes. The Techno Trolls were meant to be semi see-through, which is still referenced in some merchandise. " Crunch " was a name given to a Rock Troll, who appears to have been switched for Sid Fret late into development.

Crunch's unused design (right) alongside a random Rock Troll (left)

Concept art for Cooper at all stages of his life was created, but never used. His brother Prince D at one point looked more like him, just with a golden cap, a blue goatee, and golden rings in his dreads. In the final movie version, Darnell doesn't have a cap at all, has less gold rings in his hair and completely lacks a goatee. Also, the Funk Trolls were meant to be ruled by a single giant King. In the movie, Cooper met a pair of Jazz birds , which went through a number of design changes. In concept art, he met actual Trolls, dressed in a classy manner. [34]

Concept art of Cooper's stages of life.

King Thrash looked more like his voice actor Ozzy Osbourne at one stage, as seen in a cut scene animatic.

Ancient Trolls resembling cavemen were also conceptualized, but not used in the film either.

In concept art as well, the K-Pop Trolls looked very different to their final film versions, while the Reggaeton Trolls remained mostly the same. Some of the rejected concepts for the K-Pop Trolls included both male and female Trolls. They also had a more oriental appearance. [35]

Barb's face is particularly unique among the Trolls. Part of the "The Sound of Silence" scene was meant to test out how she would interact with Poppy and that her assets were working. Her head was initially so large that it caused issues with her face and had to be scaled down by 10%. [30]

Characterization

The movie brings to question Poppy's character from the first film, addressing the issue of what makes a good leader. In Trolls and Trolls Holiday , Poppy was shown to do her own thing and not to listen to Branch. Finally, this comes to a head when it causes her problems as Queen, as she fails to hear what others have to say. When Hickory joins her group of travelling friends, he makes it worst by telling her what she wants to hear and thus causing her to further ignore Branch and Biggie who are travelling with her. She pursues her quest even though it's going badly, and her people and friendships are strained as a result. Later, Poppy's inability to listen is used against Barb when Barb was forced to acknowledge or ignore Riff when he spoke up against her plans, as Poppy throws the lesson she has had to learn at Barb.

Branch's character was carried over from the first movie, and he has growing feelings for Poppy. Originally, he pair would have been more aware of the reaction to them both denying a relationship with each other. Instead, Poppy remained ignorant of the Branch's feelings for most of the movie.

Plot Changes/Scene Deletions

The storyline's plot begun with the writers asking how to make their world bigger, and they played with the idea of there being other kinds of Trolls that specialize in music. Some ideas were brainstormed, which had both big and small "troll-town" ideas. The idea of the Pop Trolls being a secondary villain in Trolls World Tour had been taken from the idea that people didn't know The Beatles and Elvis Presley had taken ideas from other singers before them. [25] The plot was written over the course of 3 years after the basis was sorted. [21]

Another issue the movie faced was repeating themselves, especially with plot and gags. While it's fine that Guy Diamond farted glitter in the first film, repeating this joke was avoided in the second. [21]

In early promotional material released before the movie itself did, Barb's reason for going after the Strings was because she was jealous the Pop Trolls' popularity and success, and wanted to end their dominance. This was changed at some point before the movie's release, but references to this can be found in very early 2020 merchandise. The Strings weren't always part of the movie's plot, and early concepts just had the Rock Trolls destroying everything and leaving it in ruins, so that Rock would be left the only genre standing strong.

The true history of the Strings was changed significantly. This is tied in with the earlier "Pop being dominant" reason for Barb embarking her World Tour in the first place. The Strings' original plot made it into the Trolls World Tour: The Junior Novelization , due to how late changes to the film were being made. Just Sing also makes references to the altered plot that only makes sense for the original version of the Strings' history.

Chris Heltzel had added to his gallery some storyboards for the movie out of Lonesome Flats, with some segments having multiple possible directions on how they could play out. At one point, the introduction of Delta Dawn was very different: the Country Trolls were busy going about their day when Hickory ran into town to report on the destruction of the Classical Trolls' home after being sent to investigate. Delta would confirm she too had been sent an invitation like Poppy, and would comment she knew it was a set up, ordering the protection of their String, indicating the Strings were in the plot by this revision. The song was different, and instead of Born To Die she sung about how they had prepared for this day their entire lives, and Barb wouldn't be allowed to commit a crime. A Country Troll is still born during the song, but comes from an adult's tail end and not the hair on their head. The Trolls are then shown forming a barricade using cacti. The song is said by Poppy to be serious and intense instead of sorrowful and empathic as displayed in Born To Die; Branch still likes the song despite this. The Country Trolls are then seen training; Delta ends the song unarming her Banjo with the Country String and placing it in a jar for safekeeping. When Poppy goes to talk to Delta, Delta mistakes the Pop Trolls for Rock Trolls; Poppy manages to correct Delta, but Delta doesn't believe a team-up is the best idea, as the Country Trolls have the home field advantage. The storyboard ends as Poppy goes to sing the most important songs in the history of music. [36]

The escape from Lonesome Flats was also slightly different, with a group of Tumbleweeds joining in the chase. Originally, the Pop Trolls and Hickory escaped by Hickory halting, causing those chasing them to fall off the cliff. An alternative version, of which a variant was used in the final movie, had Branch freeing himself from the mustache lasso, getting flung towards the others and knocking the group off the cliff; Hickory tries to make it to the other side but fails.

Based on a toy with a design from the Hasbro Small Figurines "bobblehead" set, Poppy was meant to befriend Carol at one point, then depicted as a child. Her prototype "child" design, later made into the separate character of Amp , can be seen in the Trolls World Tour Look and Find book, along with many elements that were changed late into the movie's development. Other elements can also be seen in the Hasbro Tiny Dancers series.

In another storyboard supplied by Chris Heltzel, Peppy was shown to be lecturing Guy Diamond on how to raise Tiny Diamond; he exampled Poppy's confident and independence, deciding that he had been a fool to raise her to be like that. Guy notes down that Tiny should n't think anything but like his own self. Peppy explains Poppy is out there without a clue of what she's up against and Guy notes Tiny should never leave the village. Additionally, any hopes and dreams should be discouraged. Throughout this the view switches between Guy and Peppy's talk and Tiny, who progressively grows frustrated with doing things like his father's way. The trio are interrupted from the talk with the sound of Rock music, as the Rock Trolls arrive to Pop Village bursting through the doors of the library. In the supplied board, multiple possible introductions were shown of Barb meeting the trio. The storyboard ends with her demanding the string before she has to act up.

Deleted Scenes

The movie originally begun with Poppy singing The Sound of Silence , with Barb interrupting her to do a guitar solo. At one point, she stage-back-slides along the ground. This led into the main movie with Poppy asking "Who was that?", as seen in the first Trailer. A lot of Barb's introduction animation was later used for when Poppy appears to have been turned into a Rock Zombie. A cut version of this was referenced by a real-life enactment of the scene before production. This scene was mostly a test of how Barb and Poppy would interact with each other as well. [30]

Technostring

The cut scene of King Trollex removing the Techno String from Techno Beat Drop Button

The Techno string was originally held in Techno Beat Drop Button ; the scene of King Trollex removing the string and giving it to Barb was cut from the movie.

There was originally a birth scene of Guy Diamond actually going to push his son out, with Branch reminding him to remember the procedure while Poppy telling him that he doesn't need any training and all he needs is have room for hugs, while other Snack Pack members like Biggie and Smidge are panicking. [37]

A deleted scene involved Cooper talking with his reflection in a mirror regarding his own destiny, before embarking his journey.

The trip with Branch and Poppy in Sheila Balloon was meant to have a Can You Feel It? musical number. The number depicted all the other Trolls from Poppy's "Pop" perspective as different but all "Pop-like" to her, and was meant to show how far Poppy's ideas of the other Trolls were removed from reality. In the actual movie, Poppy's lack of understanding how the other Trolls were different was toned down due to this scene's removal. The reason the scene was removed was because the developers had to make a decision between adding songs and moving the plot forward. They originally wanted more songs in the movie than what there ended up being. [38]

In an early cut scene animatic, Barb didn't hire Bounty Hunters. She instead stopped off a diner where unpopular genres of Trolls ended up playing to a empty crowd, and hired several of them to get her Poppy. The Mariachi Sisters , Little Miss Polka and The Barbershop Boys were all cut from the movie, and were among the types of Trolls that didn't make it into the movie's final version as a result.

Another concept for the Bounty Hunters also was revealed by Jeremy Bernstein, in which he went for a "dusty meeting" approach. [39]

The Mariachi Sisters

Concept art depicts Cooper being with Poppy, Branch and Biggie when they arrive at Lonesome Flats , which shows that he wasn't originally going to be doing a solo journey. [40]

In later versions, Cooper is removed by the time the group arrived at Lonesome Flats. The plot is also adjusted so Poppy, Branch and Biggie also met Hickory first before meeting the Country Trolls, who then took them to Lonesome Flats .

In the storyboard, Poppy, Branch and Biggie would have made a joke at the Lonesome Flats jail. It involved them stating that if they stayed any longer, they would end up like "the skeleton family", with the skeletal remains of two adult Trolls and a child being pointed to. [41]

Biggie would be gone by the time where the Queen of Pop song would have been played in the movie.

In early scripts, the Funk and Rock Trolls had a music battle. [42] Poppy was also supposed to get lost in a "Funky forest". [43]

References to a "Funky Poppy" design is seen in early promos. Topps Trolls cards for the film still reference this cut design. Branch, Biggie and Mr. Dinkles also have Funk designs in the set; the presence of Biggie's design indicates that a possible plot change happened with him, and the Funk Trolls' string may have been taken sooner than in the original plot.

A sighting of "Funky Poppy" from the Topps Trolls card series.

There was going to be a song named Cloud 9 , which was set to play when Cloud Guy became a father and looked after his three children .

The outfits that The Snack Pack wore to infiltrate the Rock Trolls originally resembled more closely to Hard Rock, rather than their final Rock 'n' Roll-themed designs in the movie. Once again, the Tiny Dancers (with Smidge being seen in her original outfit) and the "Trolls World Tour Look and Find" book show the original designs.

World Building

Each part of Troll Kingdom has a different look. Volcano Rock City is made of leather and denim. Lonesome Flats resembles a quilt. Vibe City uses neon lights and vinyl record references. Techno Reef uses LED and crochet .

As with the Trolls film, many of the landscapes had real-life model counterparts to help with visualization. The ancient ancestors of the Trolls as depicted by Peppy were created in real life with actual textiles and materials before being photographed for use in the movie. [44]

A lot of focus was put onto the overall world to make it bright and fuzzy. Due to the amount of fuzziness there were concerns with rendering. The team relied on VFX supe Matt Baer who figured out the best way to render all the fuzz seen in the movie and overall, Trolls World Tour was an improvement over Trolls . The team wanted to focus on balancing visual story telling. In addition, a lot of trust was put into the creative decision. In turn, Trolls World Tour did a things that had never been done before. So finding the right production team for the job was also important. [45]

The fuzziness and fur of the world was a important focus for the movie and the concert scenes alone were some of the fuzziest ever made. Each scene required much processing power from computer software to render the scenes, lighting was one of the first focusing points of any scene and how it reacted to all the fur and fuzz. Each fur or clump of hair was rendered in a curve that was distinct and rendered at multiple levels to create layers of depth, while being overseen by traditional artists during the process. As a result, scenes in Trolls World Tour were significantly more in-depth and detailed then Trolls before it, with some scenes having over a million curves. [29]

One big balancing act that needed to be handled is the idea of handling dazzling and overwhelming. While the production had to reference the culture of each music genre, it was hard to avoid stereotypes. One of the challenges was turning one Troll Tribe into 6. [46]

Trolls World Tour was allowed to go near water, whereas they had forbidden Trolls to do so. The biggest challenge of the entire movie had been the scale of the project and world building. [21]

The crew often used fabrics in real life to see how it would look in the Trolls' world. For the Rock Trolls, their world is made of silk, leather, denim and fishnets. Its look was created by having fabric blown by a fan to see how it looked. The lava is made of satin fabric. The Country Trolls' world is made of quilted fabrics, burlap, denim, and gingham, and their rivers were formed with gossamer fabric. The cliffs were rendered as stacks of blankets on top of one another. The mountains in the Classical Trolls' world were meant to look as if they were made of rococo-brocade fabric and satin-cord-trimmed; Machu Picchu was used as reference for their shape. They also looked at the wigs and ended up creating a look with a bit of silliness to it by accident. Vibe City was inspired by 1970s LP art, with gold, silver and purple coloration placed into the background. Techno Reef was made to look like a macramé dance club world with lasers, and was inspired by nautical ropes. All of the production team's departments had to come together to make its scene happen. [47]

The DreamWorks Trolls twitter account ran a series of Tweets under the tag of "#TrollsArtTuesday" showing concept art. [48]

The movie's plot takes place over the course of approximately 3 days, with the sunlight in each part of the day being monitored. [49]

The music was based on the 6 main genres featured in the movie: Funk, Pop, Rock, Techno, Classical and Country. Each Tribe started out with a song each. Music demos were made over the course of the 3-year production by Ludwig Göransson and Joseph Shirley. Musicians enjoyed their music coming to life within the movie. The more challenging part was when it came to the movie's original songs. [21] Justin Timberlake described exploring all the new styles of music as exciting and a little daunting. [50]

In 2021, the song " Just Sing " won the "Hollywood Music In Media Award for Best Original Song, Animated Feature". [51]

Success and Critical Response

Due to the money Trolls made previously in cinemas, releasing Trolls World Tour on VOD was considered a ludicrous risk, as the franchise was at this point worth $700 million. However, a contribution to the discussion was that 3 of the trailers received 150 million views. It was estimated that 9-12 million views for the release onto home cinema would result in a $200 million revenue upfront, which was expected to cover the film's costs. The cost of production was $90 million for the movie, and $30 million for P&R. [54]

Instead, the digital release of Trolls World Tour resulted in it making more money in less than a month than Trolls did in 5 months. [55] This was far better than predicted; it was able to compete with Sonic the Hedgehog and Frozen II , and held onto the no.1 film spot for several weeks after its inital release, taking the spotlight from those films. [56] The film was later nominated for Best Movie of 2020 and Best Family Movie of 2020 at the People's Choice Awards . [57] In the UK, the film was a chart topper, grabbing the no.1 spot for 7 weeks (though not consecutively). [58]

In April 2020, Timothoy Donohoo of CBR proposed the reason both Trolls and Trolls World Tour were successful was because they had a level of Nostalgia factor, due to the Troll dolls having been around since 1959. In comparison, the rivalling movie UglyDolls had failed because it was a newcomer with only recent success. While the Troll dolls had waned in popularity since the 1990s, 50 years of nostalgia gave the way for Trolls to succeed, but the lack of such a factor led UglyDolls down the path of failure at the box office. Another factor was though many of the UglyDolls cast could sing, Trolls had used actors that could perform and thus had established reputations of being able to also act. [59]

According to a report, 80% of all sales from VOD is profit for studios versus the theaters, which is at 50% of that profit. A factor in the success of Trolls World Tour was the lack of competition. Another factor is the fact it was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Slashfilm claiming that "it dropped just when families needed something to distract their stir-crazy kid". [60]

In June 2020, the HollyWood Reporter had a much more critical response to the film's success, and claimed that while Trolls World Tour had made $100 million back at the time, it was still in the red due to development cost, boasting that it may never make back the money. Promotion of the film had cost $35 million. While the experiment with Trolls World Tour worked out, they didn't think it was enough to repeat the experiment with bigger franchises such as the upcoming Fast & Furious movie F9 , due at a later date. The film had also sparked worry among its stars that they wouldn't be paid for their contributions, due to it being unreleased at the in the cinemas at that point. On advantage, Universal had kept that the VOD release was a bigger profit. [61]

The cinema industry attempted to make people react negatively to Trolls World Tour , only for it to make $100 million on digital sales alone. The COVID-19 pandemic resulting in cinemas to close started a slide for AMC Theatres. In October 2020, Disney would follow suit and push to release its own movies on Disney+, leading AMC to announce that if ticket prices didn't raise it would face liquidation in 2021. In addition, it faced being stuck with an outdated film stock. Trolls World Tour is now considered a turning point in the spiral for the company. [62]

UPI France was one of the countries largely unaffected by NBCUniversal's decision to feature the film on VOD, and allowed the film a wide release in France due to French cinema rules being different to that of other countries. [63]

In December 2020, an artical by GQ Magazine noted why Trolls World Tour had been the most important film of 2020 for Universal. This was owed to its impact on cinemas when it skipped a cinematic release. Trolls World Tour was the first of several films to recieve that treament, the others that followed were The King Of Staten Island , The Invisible Man and Emma all causeed by the Covid-19 Pandemic since Cinemas were now empty and unable to attract an audience for these films. In addition, the argument about paying $15 per head was brought into question as custom could just pay a single price and watch the same blockbuster at home. Additional notes included how convient things had gotten. The next note was that it was not 2010 and the experience of watching something at home was a different experience now. TV sets were now bigger and more easy available, with the added bonus of being able to pause the screen when a friend or family member needed to make use of the toilet during the movie. While the Cinemas called out the move, it was pondered if that was now the end of the cinematic experience. There was some cost in revenue from a lack of focused control over Cinema tie-in merchandise. 2021 would see a several services such as Disney+ . They did not believe the impact would last one year and more would follow, since Cinemas needed big name bucks to stay alive if they could not attract them this would be over with the eventual possible destruction of Cinemas. [64]

In 2021, it was reported that due to both Trolls World Tour and The Croods: A New Age , DreamWorks thrived in 2020 despite the pandemic, and Trolls World Tour alone grossed nearly $350 million worldwide, $80 million of which within 6 weeks. Meanwhile, The Croods: A New Age had reeled in $160 million. This is without DreamWorks' serial TV animation success taken in mind, as the company was also now looking into adult TV media in the near future. [65]

Overall, Trolls World Tour made $43 million worldwide from cinema releases, and $48 million on DVD and Blu-Ray sales, in addition to its VOD revenue by February 2021, being most successful in France and Austrilia. By July 2023, it had made $54,237,879 on home market sales. [66]

While it's unknown how much the actors were paid, it was expected that Justin Timberlake would earn a 7-figure number in back-pay salary. [67]

Geeks Under Grace reviewer Tyrone Barnes gave the film an overall positive review, claiming that it had a sense of déjà vu. However, he noted that it felt like a cut-down version of Avengers: Infinity War , which came out two years before Trolls World Tour . [68]

Awards & Accolades

  • When Barb shouts "Rockers!" at Trollex, her right hand clips through her head and behind her ear as she does the Rock gesture.
  • When Poppy says the line "Bring your string to the biggest party the world has ever seen", in the invite it can be seen that it actually says "Bring your own string to the biggest party the world has ever seen". Poppy skipped the word "own".
  • During Just Sing , sometimes Rock Trolls while headbanging will move their hair through other Trolls.
  • Also during Just Sing, all members of The Snack Pack except Poppy and Branch disappear from the stage by the end.
  • Sometimes, The K-Pop Gang 's reflective outfits will reveal parts of the skybox area which isn't rendered. This is difficult to see and happens so fast the viewer won't see it particularly well unless the screen is paused.
  • When Queen Poppy was brushing her teeth with the lollipop, The teeth become white in the next scene.

Related Media & Merchandise

Compared to Trolls , Trolls World Tour has had much greater amounts of merchandising overall. Part of this can be put down to the movie's success, and can also be contributed to the number of trademarks held related to this movie. In addition to the 5 trademarks for "Trolls World Tour", a number of characters have been trademarked. These include Growley Pete, Tiny Diamond and Delta Dawn.

The movie highly benefited from its release at home rather than the cinema. [74] Its success is put down to a positive response and good marketing. Due to the fact it was no longer being released in cinemas, the marketing of the movie had to change suddenly and without much notice. Companies distributing merchandise were forced to change their approach, as they were no longer selling merchandise for a cinema-related film. [75]

Companies had different approaches to the marketing of the movie.

As with Trolls, most merchandise for Trolls World Tour can be easily identified by its "look", even across companies. Here's a fashion doll from the Hasbro Fashion Troll Dolls.

He also wrote the Big Golden Book and Little Golden Book retellings of the story.

The Trolls Magazine also begun updated its title and publication to the movies new release.

Similar to Trolls book The Art of DreamWorks Trolls , The Art of DreamWorks Trolls World Tour was created with behind the scenes information. However, the book was never sold and is only available on e-bay currently as only Employees of DreamWorks and others involved in the movie recieved a copy of the book.

Toys & Games

Starting from January 2020, Trolls World Tour had much more merchandise to offer before and after release of the movie itself, and toys and games were released throughout 2020 by various companies. The amount was notable compared to the amount for Trolls in 2016 and 2017 and by 3 months more Merchandise had been produced overall for the movie then Trolls had seen in its first year.

Hasbro updated their small range figurines to include Trolls World Tour toys (though this range was noted for its issues related to quality during this period), as well as the medium range (a new line of fashion dolls were produced) and many new feature dolls . A new toy line Tiny Dancers was created. As exampled with the Tiny Dancers, one of the notable issues with merchandise for the movie is the inconsistency between product and final movie character designs, of which this series best examples. Both King Trollex and Prince D have their early designs.

Top Trumps released a Trolls World Tour deck that is compatible with the past Trolls deck. Other games were made by companies and Topps Trolls had a collectable trading card game.

Wow Stuff also produced a number of figurines as did Funko and LEGO Sets were made for Trolls.

In August 2020, a doll related to the movie, known as " Giggle and Sing Poppy ", was removed. It was removed from shelves a short time after released into stores due to the placement of the button that activated its functions. The removal was based on concerns of it was inappropriate. [80]

As with Trolls , PÜR produced promotional cosmetic sets as a tie-in with the movie in their PÜR X TROLLS range. Compared to their Trolls lineup, the promotion was much larger, with an entire lineup of cosmetics being produced.

China Glaze also released a nail polish collection based on the film.

Food & Beverages

Cakebites did a special promotion for the movie featuring two cakes, one for Pop Trolls and the other for Rock Trolls . Funables also ran a promotion as did TostaRica . Lay's ran a promotional tie-in with their "Poppables" range across the various flavours, while SeaBrook also did a promotion for their own crisps.

MacDonald 's also did a Happy Meal promotion with a number of toys could be collected.

The title of the movie is a play on words. While it references Barb's "Rock World Tour", it also acts as a quick guide or "world tour" of the various locations within Troll Kingdom .

In Japan, the movie was titled Trolls Music☆Power .

It was originally announced as Trolls 2 , with a number of countries have later gone on to use a variant of that title.

Cultural References

  • The scene where the Rock Trolls emerge from the ocean after destroying Techno Reef is a reference to the Mad Max chase scene.
  • When Poppy, Branch, Biggie and Hickory are about to fall into the river out of Lonesome Flats, they briefly float in midair. This is likely based on the common classic cartoon logic rule of "gravity does not work until you look down", which was made infamous by the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons.
  • The One More Time scene is likely a reference to the opening of Daft Punk's movie Interstella 5555 , a visual adaptation of the song's album Discovery . Similarly to the Trolls World Tour scene, the opening involves an alien planet in which a band plays at a concert, only for a human military force to invade and kidnap the band. The fact that the military force brainwashes the band and makes them look like humans is also a parallel to Barb's goal of converting all non-Rock Trolls to Rock music.
  • Queen Barb's "punk rock" design is a classic Troll Doll design for the Good Luck Trolls . There have been several Punk Trolls since the 70s, including one famous one by Russ.
  • "It still has Disco on it" implies that there once was Disco Trolls for there to be a significant genre reference, but it mostly notes the cultural joke of "Disco is dead". The event that often said to have "killed Disco" is the Disco Demolition Night explosion, which caused a cultural backlash and riots.
  • The Pop Trolls alternation of the history of tribes, is a nod to real world historic events, where people embellished the events. This was especially true for battles, where the victor recorded events in their favour.
  • The way Trolls were divided by DreamWorks in previous Trolls media was by family, the classifications of which were " Guru ", " Giant ", " Rainbow ", etc; for example, Branch and Poppy were in the "Rainbow" family. These terms were dropped after Trolls World Tour 's announcement, and Trolls became identified by their Tribe instead of their family.
  • The 2D-animated TV series are generally not considered canon to the franchise's overall storyline, but this is still a roughly accurate setting for how long since Trolls the movie takes place. [81]
  • Trolls: Holiday in Harmony happens only a short time after Trolls World Tour . [81] Tiny Diamond states he is 1 month old in Trolls Band Together .
  • Trolls Band Together would invalidate Trolls: TrollsTopia s plot as it took place just 1 month after Trolls World Tour .
  • Trolls World Tour marked a shift in character development and handling. One such example is seen in The Snack Pack , who was the main focus of Trolls -era media. However, in both Trolls: Holiday in Harmony and the 2D animation Trolls: TrollsTopia , stories were written that featured few members, with Trolls: TrollsTopia only featuring the group together in a major role in the series first episode and Trolls: Holiday in Harmony only showing Poppy, Branch, Legsly, Tiny Diamond and Guy Diamond.
  • The time from Trolls to Trolls World Tour is less than 1 year with its related special Trolls: Holiday in Harmony taking place only a short time after the events of Trolls World Tour .
  • The events of the film actually lead to John Dory confirming Branch was still alive and part led to John tracking Branch down and are partly responsible for the events of Trolls Band Together being able to occur.
  • The events related to Floyd , in regards to Velvet and Veneer 's rise to fame at Mount Rageous actually are taking place as Trolls World Tour is happening, as Floyd's capture occurred 1 month before Trolls World Tour and 2 months prior to Trolls Band Together .
  • The movie also explains why the Pop Trolls had to rescue themselves from the Troll Tree despite there being other Tribes. Its due to their involvement with the Strings - no one was going to rescue them.
  • The rule was also referenced often as a running gag in Trolls: The Beat Goes On! , and later in Trolls: TrollsTopia .
  • It has more deleted scenes and cut songs than the first movie .
  • The moment where Poppy and Branch hug and kiss is zoomed out, which is meant to be a bonus for fans paying attention. [83] [84] [85] DreamWorks had not decided to answer if the Poppy and Branch pairing is official until " Trolls Band Together ". [86]
  • The plot of the movie from the start of Barb's Rock World Tour to Just Sing takes place over the course of 3 nights and 3 days. The day and night cycle was actually noted on the storyboard, including evening and morning sun.

Guitar Hero World Tour

  • View history

Guitar Hero World Tour (initially referred to as Guitar Hero IV or Guitar Hero IV: World Tour ) is a music video game developed by Neversoft and published by RedOctane and Activision. It is the fourth main entry in the Guitar Hero series . The game was launched in North America in October 26, 2008 for the PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 , Wii , and Xbox 360 consoles, and a month later for Europe and Australia. A version of Guitar Hero World Tour for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh has also been announced for a release on July 26, 2009 and was the last Guitar Hero game published to these operating systems by Aspyr Media.

While the game continues to feature the use of a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of rock music, Guitar Hero World Tour is the first game in the Guitar Hero series to feature drum and microphone controllers for percussion and vocal parts, similar in manner to the competing Rock Band series of games. The game allows users to create new songs through the " Music Studio " mode, which can then be uploaded and shared through a service known as " GHTunes ".

World Tour received generally positive reviews with critics responding positively to the quality of the instrument controllers, the customization abilities, and improvements in the game's difficulty compared with the previous Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock . Some reviewers have commented on issues with poorly laid-out note tracks, the limited Career modes, and the difficulty of the music creation tool and the poor quality of the resulting songs.

Development

The fourth major entry to the Guitar Hero series, referred to as Guitar Hero IV at the time, was officially announced upon the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games in December 2007. "We couldn't have done it without Red Octane's support." says the Guitar Hero Team. [1] The game's new title, Guitar Hero World Tour , was officially announced by Activision in May 2008. [2]

Activision and RedOctane had previously registered for trademarks on " Guitar Villain ", " Drum Villain ", " Keyboard Hero ", " Drum Hero " and " Band Hero " [3] (the latter being used in a later title ). Analysts theorized that future Guitar Hero would need to include additional instrument peripherals in order to compete against the former Guitar Hero developer Harmonix 's Rock Band . [4] Activision's CEO Bobby Kotick and early previews of the game revealed that Guitar Hero IV would branch out into other instruments and vocals. [5] [6] [7]

According to the Game Informer preview, the addition of drum functionality came from work initially done towards the Drum Hero title. This work was later folded into the Guitar Hero series after Neversoft was chosen as developer of the series. [5] Neversoft's Allen Flores stated that with the addition of the existing drum gameplay, the development of World Tour took under a year, starting development immediately after the release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock . [8] The drum instrument controller was designed to be more realistic, with details from Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers , Stewart Copeland of The Police , and Travis Barker of Blink-182 , all of whom requested the elevated cymbal pads. [8] The ability to open-strum the guitar was a feature that was planned for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock but was removed before release, finding that it was too difficult on the Guitar tracks. However, they built this feature in from the start of World Tour development exclusively for the Bass tracks. [9]

Bright describes the development of the note track for a given song once it has been licensed for the game as a parallel effort, a process that they have found to be more efficient than their previous work on the Tony Hawk games. [9] Once the song was mixed for use by the development team, a "tempo map" was created by one developer; this map denotes the beats in the music which then can be used by the rest of the development team. Once the tempo map was complete, the song was then distributed to the various teams, such as the specific instrument teams or to the animators, to complete the song. [9] Note-for-note tracking from the song was then performed, and in some cases, changes were made to account for sections that cannot be replicated on the game controllers; the final track represented the note track for the Expert difficulty of the song. Note tracks were then reduced and adjusted to create the note tracks for the lower difficulties in the game. [9] A difficulty assessment was made using the final note tracks to determine where the songs were to be placed in the soundtrack progression. The difficulty model is based on that from Guitar Hero: Aerosmith , which was adjusted from the Guitar Hero III model after the team received negative feedback from players regarding a "brick wall" in the difficulty progression in that game. [9]

The song list for World Tour started as the list of songs that Neversoft wanted to include in Guitar Hero III , but had failed to get into the game or as downloadable content; the list was eventually expanded to over 500 songs. [9] The song list was then prioritized based on what the team thought would be best in the game, and then going after the music that would take the longest time to license, as was the case for the Jimi Hendrix songs. [9] While songs were selected to make sure that guitar, bass, and drums all had great parts, they also opted for songs that would be strong for one single instrument as to make the game still appealing for those playing the single player modes. [9] Some songs were also suggested through the licensing efforts by Activision for inclusion in the game. [9] Flores stated that the inclusion of caricatures of recording artists in the game was either due to the team seeking that specific artist for the game, or the artist approaching the development team and requesting to be part of it. [8] The band Tool , which hasn't licensed its music since 1996, allowed for the inclusion of three of its songs in World Tour as long they were involved with the artwork and tracking of the songs for the game, leading to the creation of the art-like Tool venue. [10]

Bright noted that they had support for "epic drum solos", in which the band animation would focus on the drummer, but removed this feature from the game's final release due to its complexity. [9] They also had to remove the "Jam Over" mode planned for the game's music creation section that would have allowed players to start with one of the game's songs and play over it on their instruments; this feature was removed in order to keep the final product polished and on-time. [9]

The custom song creation feature was inspired by the current "hacking environment" that has arisen from the first two Guitar Hero games, where players would create new tracks and share them with others. [11] [12]

Meanwhile Hands-On Mobile acquired to create a mobile phone version of the game to be released later in November 2008. [13]

A port of Guitar Hero World Tour has been rated by the ESRB for Microsoft Windows computers , though Activision has not officially confirmed this version [14] until it was confirmed by Intel on February 27, 2009 [15] and displayed at CeBIT on March 3–8, 2009 in Hannover, Germany. [16] [17] [18]

Bundling and promotion

Guitar hero KFC

KFC's Guitar Hero -branded Fully Loaded Box Meal.

In preparation for the release of Guitar Hero World Tour , Activision partnered with the fast-food chain company Kentucky Fried Chicken to promote the upcoming release of Guitar Hero World Tour in their Fully Loaded Box Meals in September 2008, [19] which consisted "KFC snacker" sandwich, two chicken strips, a drumstick or thigh, a biscuit, two sides and a 32 ounce soft drink. On October 28, 2008, Kotaku gave their impression of the KFC promotion, giving their overall rating the selection of food with a D-, stating that "it was one of the few meals where vomit phobia was almost outweighed by a feeling to purge this poison." [20]

On October 26, 2008, Guitar Hero World Tour was released in North America with several bundle packages, as well as a standalone game. Europe and Australia received this title in November 2008. In addition to a game bundle that includes a wireless guitar for each platform, the game can be bought in one of two bundles that include the guitar, drums, and microphone controller. The second bundle, only available through RedOctane's store, also includes a T-shirt, keychain, and a recharging kit. [21] Players in the United Kingdom who pre-order the full band bundle also received a second guitar controller for bass players. The bass guitar is the Les Paul guitar, the same model as bundled with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock . [22] During the Christmas season of 2008, Some retailers, such as Target, sold in-store a dual guitar bundle which included two identical wireless Les Paul styled guitars from previous game versions and did not include the new guitar with the tapping area.

Activision created a series of television advertisements directed by Brett Ratner based on the famous scene from Risky Business where Tom Cruise dances to Bob Seger 's " Old Time Rock and Roll " in a shirt and underwear, each featuring a different set of celebrities lip synching to the lyrics while using the new instrument controllers. The first ad included athletes Kobe Bryant, Tony Hawk, Alex Rodriguez, and Michael Phelps. [23] Another ad spot featured model Heidi Klum; two versions of Klum's ad exist, one a "director's cut" where she is wearing less clothing. [24] A subsequent commercial featuring model Marisa Miller was banned from airing as too racy. [25] [26]

A viral YouTube video titled "Bike Hero" showed what appeared to be a teenager riding a bike along a route marked with symbols similar in appearance to the in-game note tracks with LED lights on the handlebars blinking in time to the notes to the song " Prisoner of Society " by The Living End . The video was later determined to be the work of a viral marketing company Droga5 in cooperation with Activision to promote the Guitar Hero games. [27] The viral advertisement was considered a success, with about 3.5 million views since its release. [28]

4gamemode

Gameplay of a whole band playing Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". On top is vocalist, bottom from left to right: Guitar, Drums, Bass

Guitar Hero World Tour builds on the gameplay from previous Guitar Hero games, in which players attempt to simulate the playing of rock music using special guitar-shaped controllers. World Tour expands beyond the core guitar-based gameplay by introducing the ability to play drums and sing vocals, and supports the ability for up to four players to play together in a virtual band through these different instruments. Successfully hitting notes increases the player's or band's score, as well as increase the " Rock Meter " that represents the song's performance. Missed notes are not scored and negatively affect the Rock Meter. If the Rock Meter drops too low, the song ends prematurely, with the virtual audience booing the band off stage. Completing a consecutive series of notes successfully will increase a scoring multiplier for that player up to 4x. This multiplier is doubled when the player activates star power. Similar to Rock Band, the band shares a common score, scoring multiplier and band performance meter while each player has their own performance metric; the band also shares the same " Star Power " meter, though any player may activate it at any time. A player that performs poorly and reduces their performance meter to zero can still continue to play, but they drain the overall performance meter for the band, requiring the other players to make up for this. Successfully completing a song garners a three to five-star rating based on the accumulated score, and rewards such as in-game money that can be used to buy new guitars and outfits for characters.

The guitar interface remains relatively unchanged in World Tour . As with previous Guitar Hero titles, the guitar and bass player must hold down the correct fret button(s) on the controller while strumming in time with the notes as they scroll on-screen. One addition to the guitar gameplay is the ability to play notes while holding a sustained note. Additionally, the bass guitar player will be required to play notes representing an open E/Fb string, which is shown on-screen as a solid line across their note track. To play these notes, the bass guitar player strums the controller without pressing any fret button keys. The drum interface is similar to the guitar's interface, with each on-screen note track equivalent to a colored drum head on the controller, with the bass drum indicated by a line across the note track. The drum player only needs to hit the correct drum pads simultaneously to the note gems to successfully play their track. There are also marked sections on the drum part wherein the player may play any notes they wish in a 'solo' to gain points. The vocal track requires the player to match the pitch of the notes in a manner similar to Karaoke Revolution to be successful. Special sections of each players' note track are marked with glowing notes, which, if completed successfully, builds up Star Power. Once enough Star Power is accumulated, it can be released via various means to double the band's current score multiplier. For guitar and bass, this is done by lifting the guitar controller vertically or (though not in bass) by pressing a button on the guitar face; for drums, by striking both cymbal pads on the controller at the same time; for vocals, by tapping the microphone or making a similarly quick sound.

In addition to the standard four difficulty levels ( Easy , Medium , Hard , and Expert ) for each song and instrument, a new Beginner level has been added in World Tour. This difficulty is aimed for younger and unskilled players; notes are generally simple straight lines in time with bass drum beats, and allowing any or no fret button to be held while the note is strummed (for lead and bass guitar), any drum to be hit (for drums), or any sound to be made (for vocals).

Games Modes

The primary single-player game mode is Career mode, which can be played on either the lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, or vocals. Career mode has been slightly altered from previous Guitar Hero games. After creating a band, selecting or creating an avatar, and then selecting an instrument, the player is then presented with one of several gigs containing two to five songs each. Most gigs end with an encore song that is not revealed until the other songs are completed. Two of the lead guitar gigs feature "boss challenges" with Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent; these boss challenges, featuring original songs by Wylde and Nugent, are different from Guitar Hero III 's boss battle, removing the focus on attack power-ups and instead featuring a call-and-response mechanic similar to the existing Face-Off mode. The gigs are arranged by difficulty based on the selected instrument. The player is awarded in-game money for each song completed, and completing each gig can also award additional money for meeting certain criteria, such as never letting the Rock Meter drop below a certain level or playing the first several notes of a song perfectly. Completing a gig can also unlock one or more gigs with more difficult songs to complete. Additional awards, such as customization items, are also awarded for completing gigs. The player's accumulated earnings across any of the single player Career Modes are tracked and used to rank the player's overall performance level.

Band Career mode is similar to the solo Career mode, with the game songs presented as several gigs to be completed. A band must have at least two players to proceed, but the second player may be either a local player or one over the network. Players may be at different levels of progression in the game, but will still gain benefits for successfully completing songs when playing together. After completing each gig, a magazine will appear on screen with the band featured on the cover.

The in-game interface features vocals along the top of the screen, and three tracks underneath, for bass, drums, and guitar; only tracks for active players will be shown. Full four-player bands can compete with other bands online in a Battle of the Bands mode.

Both single players and bands can play a setlist of up to six songs in Quickplay mode, still earning in-game money rewards for their performances. Existing competitive modes from the series, including the Battle Mode from Guitar Hero III , are also present in the game.

The Wii version of the game features a special " Mii Freestyle " mode that allows players to use their Miis as their characters as they improvise songs via the guitar and drum controllers or using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Characters and Customization

4characters

Render of a band composed of in-game characters: Judy Nails on vocals, Eddie Knox on guitar, Lars Umlaut on bass and Johnny Napalm on drums.

Players are able to use the Create-a-Rocker mode which is based on the Create-a-Skater mode in Neversoft's Tony Hawk series and the advanced character creation scheme from the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. Players can change their character's pose, clothing, tattoos, makeup, and age. Selected characters from previous Guitar Hero games are available as templates for creating a rocker. Previous games featured Gibson Guitars, but as a result of a lawsuit with Gibson Guitars, branded guitars are not featured; instead, the player can create a customized guitar from various components, such as bodies, fretboards, and headstocks. The player's in-game drum set and microphone can also be similarly customized. Activision had formed partnerships with several instrument equipment manufactures to featured in the game, including Ampeg, Audio-Technica, EMG Pickups, Ernie Ball, Evans Drumheads, Guitar Center, Krank Amplification, Mackie, Marshall, Orange County Drum & Percussion, Pork Pie Percussion, Regal Tip, Sabian, Vox, and Zildjian.

In addition to the computer- and player-controlled characters, avatars of notable musicians are featured in the game, either with motion capture or the licensing of their image for their character. Such artists include Hayley Williams , Jimi Hendrix , Ozzy Osbourne , Zakk Wylde , Billy Corgan , Sting , Ted Nugent , and Travis Barker .

New venues in the game include virtual recreations of real arenas, such as Ozzfest , Amoeba Music , Live Nation’s House of Blues , Sunset Strip and San Francisco’s AT&T Park . One venue showcases the trademark art style of Tool and was developed in collaboration with the band. World Tour is the first Activision game on the PlayStation 3 to support dynamic in-game advertising provided by IGA Worldwide; similar advertising for the Xbox 360 version is provided by Massive Incorporated.

Instruments

GHWT

Guitar Hero World Tour Wireless Guitar Controller

RedOctane developed a new guitar controller for World Tour . The unit is approximately 25% (1/4) larger than previous controllers, making it closer to the size of a real guitar. The new controller includes a longer whammy bar and places the Star Power button directly below the strum bar, improving the access of these features. The strum bar itself was made quieter and longer. The neck of the guitar is detachable, similar to the Gibson Les Paul controller for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , but the connector has been hardened to avoid connection issues experienced with the previous unit.

The neck of the guitar features a touch-sensitive pad just below the normal five fret buttons. The player can use either the fret buttons or the touch pad to play regular notes. The pad also allows the player to play notes via tapping or via " tap strumming " similar to the slap bass method for bass guitar, and to alter the pitch of sustained notes. Guitar tracks feature notes connected by a semi-transparent purple line, (except for the Wii version, in which semi-transparent gems replace this purple line) called " Slider Gems "; the player can play these notes by sliding their fingers up and down the touch pad or by tapping the fret buttons without strumming. The touchpad can also be used for sustained and staccato notes in the music studio feature while recording guitar, and is used for finer control over loops when recording other instruments.

GHWT drums

Guitar Hero World Tour Wireless Drum Controller . It includes 3 drum pads, 2 cymbal pads, and a bass drum pedal.

Guitar Hero World Tour features a wireless six-piece drum kit, with a bass drum pedal and five velocity-sensitive drum pads for snare (red), two toms (green and blue), and two cymbals (yellow and orange), which Activision has stated provide the " most realistic drum experience ever in a video game ". The drum kit was designed with help from John Devacka, the developer of MTV Drumscape, and developed key patents used for most modern music games that are now owned by Activision. Special note gems on the drum track are " armored ", requiring the player to strike harder on the appropriate drum head in order to break the armor and score points. During song creation, the velocity sensitivity feature of the drum pad allows players to alter the sounds made by the drums. The drum set also has a MIDI input port in the back, allowing users to connect a compatible MIDI drum kit to play in the game. The Wii version of the drum controller includes a slot for the Wii Remote to fit into, enabling it to become wireless, much like the guitar controller introduced for the Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock .

Microphone

The official microphone used for vocals uses a USB connection. When playing vocals, a gamepad or Wii Remote is necessary in order to navigate menus, select difficulties, and pause.

Logitech and Activision announced that the former company will produce " premium " instruments to be released later in 2008.

Instrument compatibility

World Tour will work with older Guitar Hero guitar controllers. Activision stated during their E3 2008 press conference that Xbox 360 users will be able to use the existing Rock Band instrument controllers as well as other third party controllers in Guitar Hero World Tour; Rock Band instruments for the PlayStation 3 are not guaranteed to work in World Tour, though Sony is attempting to help make these units compatible. All Rock Band original Harmonix instruments for PlayStation 2 will work with World Tour. According to issue 027 of the UK's Official Playstation Magazine, all Guitar Hero and Rock Band PS3 controllers are cross-compatible with all games (except for Guitar Hero: World Tour drums on Rock Band, however some require patching, which is done automatically when connected to the internet).

Console makers have helped to ensure instrument compatibility between current and upcoming guitar and band games. Both Sony and Microsoft have announced that instruments for World Tour , Rock Band 2 , and Konami's Rock Revolution will work between all three games on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The Wii version of the game only supports guitar controllers from previous Guitar Hero games, and " no compatibility with any other peripherals ". The Rock Band 2 Drums however, are compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour .

World Tour adjusts the tracks in the game to account for the instrument controller being used. For example, sections of the lead guitar track that are designed to be played on the new World Tour controller's touchpad can be played by tapping the frets on older controllers without strumming. When using Rock Band 's drum controller, which has one fewer percussion pad than the World Tour unit and lacks velocity sensitivity, two of the lanes on the " World Tour " drum board merge, reducing the note track to four drum pads and bass pedal, and no armored notes are presented.

All of the 86 songs in the game are master recordings, a first for the series. Project director Brian Bright claims that they have " a pretty even split between the '80s, '90s, and classic rock " with a " good amount of emerging bands ".

Custom songs

Guitar Hero World Tour allows players to create their own songs through Music Studio and share them with others through the Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection internet capabilities. The Studio is similar to Apple's GarageBand software. The player can create the tracks for each song by playing it in real or slowed time, with the game quantizing offbeat notes to the nearest beat as set by the player, or tracks can be constructed one note at a time. The notes played by the user will be the default Expert difficulty track, and the lower difficulty versions will be generated by the game.

Players can create the tracks for lead, rhythm, and bass guitars and for drums, selecting from a number of different sounds and kits for each instrument. Distortion and other effects can be added to these tracks through Line 6 amplifiers in the " GHMix " mode. Players cannot record vocals directly, but can create a hum-along vocal line in the Studio. PlayStation 3 users with MIDI-compatible computers will also be able to connect their computer to the console and use it for song composition; a similar feature is sought for Xbox 360 owners. Eurogamer reported that a crew at Activision was able to successfully create a " perfectly respectable cover " version of the first verse of " Smells Like Teen Spirit " by Nirvana.

Tournament : Smash World Tour 2021

The Smash World Tour 2021 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament circuit organized by the team behind VGBootCamp .

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the circuit ran online qualifiers for both games; however, the regional qualifiers and finale were offline. The pot prize started at $150,000 ($75,000 for each game), with a merch shop to increase it throughout the year.

"Phase One" was different between each game. For Melee , a panel of players determined 16 players to invite to each regional finale. Players were selected based upon several factors, including their performances in both 2020 and 2021 tournaments. For Ultimate , online qualifier tournaments were held in each region, with 8 or 16 players advancing to the regional qualifier.

"Phase Two" was mostly offline. Each region hosted a regional qualifier which determined the players sent to the finale, with the number of finale slots depending on the region. If qualified players were unable to attend, additional players were chosen based on their placement in the Last Chance Qualifier.

"Phase Three" was the finale , where the 32 qualified players of each game faced off offline. A Last Chance Qualifier was held for each game with the top 8 players qualifying for the finale, [1] bringing the total to 40 players for each game. If qualified players were unable to attend, additional players were chosen from their regional qualifier.

For the offline tournaments, players were required to pay for their own flights and hotel.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic [ edit ]

As the circuit was announced during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no qualifier tournaments for Melee while all Ultimate qualifiers were held online. This has led to a negative reaction from several top players such as MkLeo and Tweek, who noted how unreliable Ultimate 's online netcode was. [2] [3] Indeed, several matches were fought with a distance of over 2,000 kilometers between the players while several controversies related to connection problems popped up throughout the qualifiers, most notably in tournaments that spanned an entire continent such as South America and Europe .

As the circuit progressed, in order to accommodate the varying progress of the pandemic in each region, several tournament dates of the second phase tournaments were moved around: [4] [5] [6]

  • The SWT: Central America Melee Regional Finals was anticipated to August 28th-29th.
  • The SWT: Europe Ultimate Regional Finals was postponed to September 18th-19th.
  • The SWT: NA West Ultimate Regional Finals was postponed to October 9th-10th.
  • The SWT: Europe Melee Regional Finals was postponed twice, initially to August 14th-15th, then to October 23rd-24th. [7]
  • The SWT: East Asia Melee Regional Finals was postponed twice, initially to October 2nd-3rd, then to November 20th-21st, then anticipated to November 13th-14th. [8]
  • The SWT: East Asia Ultimate Regional Finals was postponed three times, initially to September 25th-26th, then to November 6th-7th, and finally to November 27th-28th. [9]
  • The SWT: Oceania Melee & Ultimate Regional Finals was postponed twice, initially to August 27th-29th, then to November 12th-14th, before being cancelled, [10] with Sora and Jdizzle being invited for Melee and Ultimate , respectively.

Notably, due to the severe status of the pandemic in South America, the in-person tournament for the region was cancelled. Instead, Chape and HP were chosen as the South American Melee finalists while the Ultimate qualifier was changed to online. This announcement led to an outcry of disappointment within the South American community, with many South American players accusing Smash World Tour and VGBootCamp for sidelining a community that saw seldom national representation. Amidst the controversy surrounding the final , GimR posted a response clearing up the situation, specifically noting their efforts to ensure tournament matches ran as smoothly as possible and the difficulty it took for South Americans to obtain a United States visa, especially during the pandemic. [11]

All the qualified players from the SWT: East Asia South Ultimate Online Qualifier were unable to attend SWT: East Asia Ultimate Regional Finals due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. As a result, eight competitors from SWT: Japan Ultimate Online Qualifier were announced to take their place while XIFL took the sixth qualifying spot, bringing the total number of qualifying spots for the finals to five. Billie Eilish announces world tour for new album

Billie Eilish has announced an 81-date world tour starting later this year.

The What Was I Made For singer confirmed dates in North America, Australia and Europe from September.

Billie previously told music website Billboard her third studio album would be her most sustainable yet and she's partnered with an environmental group to organise it.

Tickets for the tour - named after upcoming album Hit Me Hard And Soft - go on sale on 3 May.

Billie will start in Canada on 29 September before taking her show to the US in October.

She'll then head to Australia in February, arriving in Europe next April.
