Wuhu Travel Guide 2024

Wuhu, also known as Jiangcheng or “Wu” for short, is a prefecture level city in southeastern Anhui Province and an important scientific research and education base and industrial base in East China. Since ancient times, it has enjoyed the reputation of a fertile “land of fish and rice”.

During the over 2000 years’ history, Wuhu today has remained its original advantages and added some modern charm. It’s a place you can enjoy mountain scenery, Hui culture, Buddhism, and contemporary entertainment.

• Immersed in Pleasant City Environment: Wuhu has always been a prosperous city in the history and has a livable environment with lakes and hills. You can take a stroll along the Yangtze River or spend a couple of relaxing hours in various parks.

Top Attractions in Wuhu

Wuhu is a city you can really slow your pace down and enjoy the local life. When you are in downtown, you can pay a visit to Zheshan Park or Jinghu Park, or learn more about Huizhou merchants in Jiuzi Old Town. If you have more time, do not miss Maren Mountain Scenic Area with marvelous mountain view.

Maren Mountain has unique landscape composed of lifelike strange peaks and stones, lush forests, rare birds, and ancient temples. Apart from the beautiful scenery, there are many exciting activities. You can take a walk on the 388 m Feilong Glass Bridge and the glass plank walk it connects, drift down the longest and largest forest high-altitude glass drift project in the world (3000 m long with an altitude difference of 180 m), take a jungle adventure and so on.

Jiuzi Old Town is 1200 m long and 500 m wide, divided by Biandan River. It is China's first commercial cultural tourism area themed in Hui merchants. Along the river, it covers 10 characteristic blocks, more than 10 kinds of immersive performances of Hui culture, 16 major cultural attractions, more than 30 intangible cultural heritage experience projects, and more than 50 time-honored brands of Huizhou merchants.

Among the more than 50 hills with different scenery in Wuhu City, the most famous is Zheshan Hill and it has become a symbol of Wuhu. Zheshan Park has many historical sites and is covered by all kinds of trees, flowers, and dotted by lakes. Some entertainment facilities such as ferris wheel are added to meet the demands of local people. What’s more, it has always been an ideal place for people to overlook Wuhu City.

The magnificent Guangji Temple was firstly built in the Qianning Period (A.D. 894-898) of Tang Dynasty. Following the 88 stairs, you can visit Tianwang Hall, Yaoshi Hall, the Great Buddha’s Hall, Dizang Hall and Guangji Temple Pagoda. Here you can worship Maitreya Buddha, Weituo Buddha, Bodhisattva of Medicine, etc. Guangji Temple is renowned as “Little Jiuhua” and is a national key temple of Han Buddhism.

Jinghu Park is composed of two parts: the big mirror lake (also called Taotang) and the small mirror lake (also called Wangjiatian). Jinghu in Chinese means mirror lake. It gets the name because of its clear water and round shape. Jinghu Park is located in the center of the city, adjacent to the most prosperous Wuhu Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street and Jiuzi Square. It is an ideal place to take a leisure walk.

Located on the Yangtze River in the northern suburb of Wuhu City, Tianmen Mountain is famous for a poem written by Li Bai (A.D. 701-762), one of the greatest poets in China’s history. Tianmen Mountain is also called Dongliang Mountain. It stands out in the river opposite Xiliang Mountain with Yangtze River running through. Seen from the distance, they are like the two eyebrows of a young lady.

Wuhu Weather and When to Go

Wuhu City has a subtropical humid monsoon climate, which is characterized by abundant sunshine, plentiful rainfall and four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is 15-16 ℃, and the annual sunshine hours are about 2000 hours. The hottest month is July or August with an average temperature over 28 ℃, but the highest temperature can be close to 40 ℃. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of only 3 ℃. But sometimes it will drop below 0℃. Wuhu has an annual rainfall of 1200 mm, but the precipitation is unevenly distributed, mainly concentrates in spring, plum rain season (usually June to July) and early winter. The frost free period is 219-240 days a year.

Best time to visit: Endowed with both natural and cultural sites, Wuhu is suitable to visit all year round. But to ensure a more pleasant trip on a comfortable day, the best time to visit is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

How to Get to Wuhu

Wuhu is now usually connected with other cities by train. The airport is expected to open in 2021, so it will be more convenient to get to Wuhu in the future.

Flights to Wuhu: Wuhu Xuanzhou International Airport (芜湖宣州国际机场 IATA：WHA) is about 40 km from Wuhu downtown and 20 km from Xuancheng downtown. It is planned to be put into operation on June 30, 2021. At that time, you can take a flight to Wuhu from main cities in China such as Beijing, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xian, Chongqing, etc. in about 2 hours. It will also gradually open international flights to Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore and other Asian countries.

Trains to Wuhu: You can take a high speed train to Wuhu from many cities in China such as Beijing (4.5h), Shanghai (2.5-3h), Hangzhou (1.5h), Suzhou (2-2.5h), Guangzhou (7.5h), Hefei (1h), Chizhou (1h), and normal train from Huangshan (4.5h).

How to Get around Wuhu

The attractions in Wuhu can be reached by bus or taxi. Subway is not available in Wuhu. If you want to extend your trip to the nearby Yellow Mountain and Mount Jiuhua, you can chart a car or take a train to get there.

Wuhu to Yellow Mountain: Yellow Mountain is in Huangshan City, about 190 km from Wuhu. You can charter a car (about 3 hours) to get to Yellow Mountain or take a long-distance bus (about 3.5h) at Wuhu Bus Station to get there. Trains are also available. You need to take a train (4.5h) from Wuhu to Huangshan City first, then travel another 60 km (1 hour by car) to the scenic area.

Wuhu to Mount Jiuhua: Mount Jiuhua is in Chizhou City, about 140 km from Wuhu. Apart from charting a car (about 2h), long-distance bus (about 3.5h) is also available and Jiuhuashan Bus Station is only hundreds of meters away from Mount Jiuhua Scenic Area. Or you can take a high speed train (1h) to Chizhou first. At Chizhou Railway Station, there will be tourist bus to Mount Jiuhua and it takes about 40 minutes.

Where to Stay in Wuhu

If you are to stay a night in Wuhu, it is most recommended to stay in the downtown area near Jinghu Park. In this area, you will have more choices of the well-equipped 5-star hotels such as Wanda Realm Hotel Wuhu (芜湖富力万达嘉华酒店) and some comfortable 4-star hotels. You can also easily get to the train station, bus station, Jiuzi Square and Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street. It is also very convenient to get to the attractions in Wuhu.

Note: As Wuhu is not an international city like Beijing or Shanghai, the hotels may be not as luxurious as the ones in those cities and the standards of star-rated hotels are different. To ensure a comfortable stay, 5-star or 4-star hotels are more recommended.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”  

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

As fighting continues in northeastern Kharkiv, its governor has issued some updates.

Russian forces struck a farm in the town of Korotychy, killing a civilian and wounding three others, said Oleh Syniehubov.

Another attack on Liptsiy injured a 71-year-old woman, who was rushed to hospital, he said.

The regional defence council has ordered the mandatory evacuation of 113 orphans from three settlements, said Oleh Syniehubov.

Plans have been laid out to evacuate a total of 1,600 residents today.

Just 200 to 300 people remain in the embattled town of Vovchansk, he said, which had a population of 2,500 before the assault and 17,000 before the war.

Russian agents plotted to set off a series of bomb attacks in Kyiv and the Western city of Lviv, Ukraine says.

The prosecutor general's office said authorities arrested two military agents over plans to blow up markets and a site near a cafe in the capital, as well as a defence enterprise in Lviv, seizing 19 explosive devices.

Four of the bombs were intended for Kyiv on Thursday, the day when Russia celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

"According to the plan of the Russian special service, the explosives were supposed to detonate during the supermarkets' peak hours to cause maximum damage to the civilian population," the agency said.

'Disguised as tea boxes'

The explosives intended for the Kyiv builders' markets were disguised as packages of tea, while a bomb was placed in a car for the cafe, according to the SBU.

The Lviv attack was meant to happen last February, the SBU said.

An unidentified defence enterprise was the target, according to prosecutors.

There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Last week, the SBU said it had caught two agents within the state protection department plotting the assassination of Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov.

The Ukrainian military says Russia has had a "partial success" near a village in northern Kharkiv.

But Ukrainian soldiers stopped Russian forces from moving further near Lukyantsi, the general staff said.

It said Russian troops have continued offensive actions, and Ukraine will build up its forces in the area depending on the situation.

Russia launched an incursion from the Belgorod region in Russia across the border into northern Kharkiv on Friday.

Analysts have warned it could stretch Ukrainian forces between two fronts, creating opportunities on the main frontline that Russia may exploit.

Echoing the analysis we featured earlier from the Insitute for the Study of War (see our 11.18am post), a senior Ukrainian official has said Vladimir Putin's reshuffle shows he wants to scale up the war effort.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said: "Russia is finally isolating itself and will try to scale up the war, expand its formats while reconfiguring the economy."

In a surprise move, Vladimir Putin sacked his defence minister of 12 years Sergei Shoigu and named economist Adrei Belousov as Mr Shoigu's successor.

The Institute for the Study of War said Mr Belousov, who has no military experience, will be charged with integrating the defence industrial base into wider domestic policy, further placing Russia on a war footing.

It suggests the Kremlin is preparing for a protracted conflict with Ukraine - or even possibly a future confrontation with NATO, the ISW said.

Approximately 40 miles from the fighting in northeastern Kharkiv, children in the region's namesake city are undertaking their first lessons at an underground school.

The classrooms - the first of their kind - are heavily fortified in an effort to allow some pupils to return to in-person teaching out of reach of Russia's bombs.

Kharkiv's schools have been forced to teach online throughout the war as some Russian missiles can reach the city in under a minute.

Metro stations are playing host to dozens of classrooms, while others have been welded together from layers of steel reinforcing wire and poured cement.

Russia has been increasingly carrying out off-road motorbike attacks under the cover of darkness, according to British intelligence.

Lighter, faster, all-terrain vehicles have highly likely been used since the start of this year to hit Ukrainian positions, transport personnel to the frontlines and conduct reconnaissance, the UK defence ministry has said.

It said Russia reportedly purchased 2,100 Chinese off-road vehicles named Desertcross 1000-3, some of which were personally inspected by Vladimir Putin in November.

"Since the start of 2024, Russia has highly likely increased its use of light vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles and off-road motorbikes, to transport personnel to the frontlines and conduct attacks on Ukrainian positions, particularly at night."

But the army has sacrificed armour and firepower for mobility, with light vehicles "far more vulnerable than their armoured counterparts", the UK MoD said.

Ukrainian drones have "already demonstrated their ability to effectively target" the vehicles, it added.

As we covered in some detail here earlier this year, Sweden dropped more than two centuries of historic neutrality by joining NATO.

The Baltic Sea, which includes maritime access to the Russian city of St Petersburg and the Kaliningrad enclave, is now almost surrounded by members of the alliance.

Today, Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson said Nordic and Baltic cooperation was "deeper than at any time in modern times", underpinned by increasing security threats from Russia.

He is hosting German chancellor Olaf Scholtz and the prime ministers of Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland in Stockholm, with security policy and NATO's July summit in Washington topping the agenda.

"We have long appreciated our neighbours, but at the same time underestimated the importance of concrete, operational cooperation," Mr Kristersson wrote in an op-ed in Swedish business paper Dagens Industri.

Meanwhile, the three Baltic prime ministers have been meeting in Lithuania to reaffirm that Moscow's intimidation is not going to dissuade them from supporting Ukraine.

Estonia's prime minister Kaja Kallas said that "Russia has also intensified the shadow war against all of European countries. It wants to really scare and intimidate the free world to scare us away from helping Ukraine".

"We shouldn't be scared," she added.

With a second front opening in the war and a surprise reshuffle in Vladimir Putin's cabinet, it's been an important week for the war in Ukraine.

Is Russia taking advantage and conducting an offensive in the border region due to the fact that several Western countries don't allow their weapons to be used on Russian soil?

Thanks, Jeanie, for this very topical question.

Russia claims to have seized nine border settlements as part of a major offensive in the Kharkiv region. Although Ukraine has known for months that Russia was amassing military forces in the region - between 30,000 to 50 000 troops - the scale and ferocity of the attack appears to have caught Ukraine by surprise.

Although only Vladimir Putin and his senior military leadership will know the details of Russia's military strategy, most military analysts believe that Russia does not have the military resources to mount a significant and enduring second front without compromising the offensive in the Donbas - widely believed to be Russia's main effort.

However, Putin is well aware that Russia has a window of opportunity to capitalise on Ukraine's shortage of weapons, and by opening a second front, it forces Ukraine to spread its resources even more thinly, leaving Ukraine more vulnerable on the frontline in the Donbas.

Russia's military objectives for this new offensive appear to be to create a "buffer zone" to protect the Russian border town of Belgorod. This logistics hub for the Russian military effort is just within artillery range of Ukraine, and Putin has long promised to push the Ukrainian forces outside artillery range - around 30km. 

In addition, Russia wants to threaten Kharkiv, so it's pushing forward to enable its own artillery to be within range of this major Ukrainian city.

Moving large quantities of military personnel and equipment from the frontline cannot easily be done discreetly - which under normal circumstances would leave Russian forces vulnerable to Ukrainian attack. 

However, in an effort to limit the potential for escalation, the West has precluded the use of Western-provided weapons to target Russian forces on Russian territory. This significantly limits Ukraine's ability to target Russia's forces as they prepare for a fresh offensive.

However, although we can speculate on Putin's objectives, a battlefield is a dynamic environment, and Russia has considerable forces in reserve to capitalise on any momentum achieved during its current offensive.

Vladimir Putin's surprise choice of new defence minister Andrei Belousov has been speaking to a parliamentary committee as part of his confirmation process.

In his first public comments since being appointed to the post, he called for greater care for soldiers, including better access to housing, hospitals and welfare benefits. 

State media quoted him as saying there was too much bureaucracy surrounding the payment of benefits to military personnel. 

"I think it's a mess when participants in the special military operation who come back on holiday are driven from civilian medical institutions to hospitals which are often simply overcrowded. This issue needs to be resolved," Mr Belousov said.

The comments appeared to be aimed at demonstrating to members of the armed forces that he understands their concerns and will work to improve their conditions.
