CrossCountry HST farewell tour sold out
A FAREWELL railtour to mark the planned withdrawal of CrossCountry HST sets in September sold out within days.
The‘Pines Express’tour, organised by Modern Railways magazine and CrossCountry is due to run on September 26 with an HST set working from Leeds to Swanage via Sheffield, Tamworth and Reading. Proceeds from the tour are being donated to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Following the discovery of defects on 43304 upon arrival at NL after working 1E63 on 14 September, 43304 was taken off set XC03 and 43366 put on, with 366+XC03+303 working 5Z43 NL-LA on 17th. 43184 remained at NL as standby for the tour and will work back to LA with 43304 now that 43304 has had a traction motor change and associated repairs from the top team at NL (reported elsewhere as having suffered sheared drive links on no. 3 wheelset - which pierced no. 2 bogie air pipework - and sheared bolts on no. 3 gearbox housing). If you know of any working of 43184 solo from NL to LA and back again in that time, can you provide evidence - as no-one else on the planet has seen that move. I went up last Tuesday and only 43304 was visible and had been moved to a different siding near to the HST servicing shed. I looked in the servicing shed and the old steam shed - the only two places 43184 would have been to be informed it wasn’t here. Still not there Wednesday but had returned by the time I was up there at 7pm on Friday just gone. I can only report what I see and had been informed of by another member of staff. Click to expand...
Bus benefit for CrossCountry railtour travellers
Travellers on the CrossCountry HST farewell tour on 26 September will benefit from free bus travel between Bournemouth and Swanage on the day of the trip, thanks to a partnership with local bus operator Morebus.
Tickets are now sold out for both the ‘Pines Express’ trip from Leeds to Swanage and the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ trip from Swanage to Bournemouth, which have been organised to mark the withdrawal of HSTs from CrossCountry after more than 40 years of service. Proceeds from the railtour will go to the Brain Tumour Charity, remembering CrossCountry colleague Jo Taylor, who passed away in 2021.
As well as travelling on the HST, ticket holders will be able to travel free of charge on Morebus route 50 between Bournemouth and Swanage on the day of the trip. The bus journey, which unusually incorporates a crossing on the Studland chain ferry, is widely regarded as one of the most scenic in the UK.
Andrew Wickham, Managing Director of Go South Coast, said: ‘At Morebus, we are delighted to be supporting CrossCountry’s HST farewell tour by providing free travel for ticket holders on Morebus route 50 between Swanage and Bournemouth on the day of the tour. We are pleased to support the Brain Tumour Charity, which is especially close to our hearts, as one of Go-Ahead’s founders and former Chief Executive, Chris Moyes OBE, was tragically taken from us by this condition in 2006.’

I get that the point is to travel on a route that they haven't travelled on in some time, but I still think a tour actually covering the whole XC route would've been better (similar to LNER's HST Farewell). LA never saw an XC HST set unless it came off out of diagram, which is not particularly robust for a 40 year old train doing 700ish miles a day. In addition NL often did odd jobs / shunts etc for XC overnight, even to the extent of turning HST vehicles on their turntable.
