Shocking video captured the moment a 5-ton bull elephant in Zambia charged at a safari vehicle — flipping it over several times and killing an 80-year-old American woman during an expedition.

The unidentified woman was among six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a photography tour Saturday when they came under attack by the crazed beast, the Telegraph reported.

“At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant,” Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

Distressing footage captured by a passenger shows the elephant barreling toward the vehicle as it cruises along a bush-lined road before suddenly stopping when its path was blocked.

The passenger continues to record as the animal lunges at the vehicle and flips it over.

The elderly woman later died of her injuries while another woman remains hospitalized.

The other four guests were treated for minor injuries after the violent attack.

“Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Vincent said.

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to the scene to evacuate the victims.

 “This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent added.

The group was reportedly staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa.

African Parks, which manages the park, also controls 22 other wildlife sanctuaries in Africa.

The tour group was making arrangements to return the woman’s body to the US, the Nigerian Bulletin reported.

American tourist killed after elephant rammed truck on African safari seen smiling in photos before attack

T he American tourist killed by a charging bull elephant that flipped over their safari vehicle in Zambia over the weekend has been identified as an adventurous 79-year-old woman who wanted the trip to be her “last big adventure.”

Mattson, who was visiting from Minnesota, was pictured the day she was killed on the safari vehicle holding a flower, her grieving family told KSTP.

She was one of six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a game drive Saturday in Kafue National Park when they came under attack by the incensed animal.

Terrifying video footage shows the elephant chasing after the safari vehicle moments before it charged the group, tipping the truck over as the guide repeatedly yelled at the creature. 

The passenger continues to record as the elephant flips the vehicle over. 

Family told the outlet that the US Embassy contacted them about her death.

Loved ones described the 79-year-old as kind, adventurous and very active in her community.

“She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” said  her friend  John Longabauth. “Because her birthday is in the summer — I think she was going to be 80, and she felt like she would start slowing down. To be honest, I don’t know if she’d slow down or not. But at least you wouldn’t be traveling as far, probably.”

Mattson split time between living in Minnesota and Arizona, her family said.

Her friends in Arizona held a memorial for her following her sudden death. 

According to the Safari company, one other guest was hurt and taken to a private medical facility.

The four other tourists on the trip were treated for minor injuries after the violent outburst.

The horrifying incident unfolded at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday during a game drive through Kafue National Park, Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement. 

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to evacuate the victims. 

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent said.

The group of tourists had been staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa. 

The tour group is making arrangements for Mattson’s body to be returned to the US. 

Police and other authorities are investigating the incident.

American woman, 79, killed during African safari after elephant charges truck

A Minnesota woman died after her tour vehicle was charged by an elephant during a safari in Africa.

Gail Mattson, who was 79, was on safari at Kafue National Park in western Zambia on March 30 when a bull elephant approached her tour group’s truck, which was carrying six tourists and a guide.

The elephant ran toward the truck and flipped it over, as seen in a video shared on social media that appears to show the incident. 

Mattson’s daughter, Rona Wells, confirmed that her mother passed away while on safari, writing in an April 2 Facebook post that her mom “lost her life in a tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

The tour company that operated Mattson’s tour, Wilderness, confirmed in an April 2 press release that an American tourist died after a tour vehicle was “unexpectedly charged” by an “aggressive bull elephant.’

“Our guides are extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Keith Vincent, the CEO of Wilderness, said in a statement. 

Another female tourist was injured in the incident, and four other guests received treatment for minor injuries, according to Wilderness.

The tour company also said in a statement that Mattson’s body would be repatriated to the United States with help from Zambian authorities and the U.S. embassy in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

This incident came after another situation involving an aggressive elephant occurred in South Africa’s Pilanesberg National Park last month.

In a video captured by a tourist that appears to show the moment, the elephant can be seen charging a safari tour truck and lifting it with its tusks. No one was hurt in that incident. 

These types of frightening run-ins with wildlife are quite rare during safaris, Marlon du Toit, a professional safari guide and wildlife photographer, told NBC News. 

Commenting on the fatal incident in Zambia, du Toit said “it’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate react so aggressively.” 

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’ve never had an encounter as aggressive (as) that with elephants,” he added.

He also told NBC News that he had worked with the tour company involved in the Zambia incident for years, and called them one of the best in Africa.

“Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands  of guests on safari on a daily basis, with no negative consequences,” he said.

Aggressive elephant lifts safari car filled with tourists into the air in South Africa

A frightening moment for a group of tourists in South Africa was caught on camera when an elephant approached their safari truck and partially lifted it up into the air.

The incident happened March 18 in Pilanesberg National Park, northwest of Johannesburg.

The group of local South Africans were touring the area when they got too close to the elephant bull to take pictures. That's when the large animal became aggressive and approached the safari truck.

Video from the scene shows the elephant lifting the front portion of the vehicle with its tusks before letting it drop to the ground. Screaming can be heard in the video.

The guide backed up the vehicle and slammed his hand against what appears to be the door in attempt to convince the elephant to stop.

The tour operator Mankwe Game Trackers told ABC News they understand the elephant was in musth, a periodic state of the bull elephant characterized by aggressive behavior and a surge of testosterone levels.

Nobody was hurt in the encounter, but the park offered counseling for those who were the most rattled.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — A bull elephant charged a truck that an 80-year-old American was riding in with other tourists on a game drive in a Zambian national park, flipping over the vehicle and killing her, a safari company said.

The attack injured five others on March 30 in the vast Kafue National Park , which covers 22,400 square kilometers (8,600 square miles) and is one of Africa’s largest animal reserves.

According to the safari company Wilderness, the “aggressive” bull elephant unexpectedly charged at the truck, which was carrying six guests and a guide on a morning excursion through wild areas.

It wasn’t clear what upset the bull. But in a video widely circulated online, the pachyderm is seen menacingly charging through the bushy terrain toward the tourists’ vehicle. A man is heard shouting “hey hey hey,” in apparent but futile efforts to scare it away. It reaches the truck and flips it over using its trunk.

Another female tourist was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to South Africa for treatment while the rest were treated for minor injuries, the company said.

“This is a devastating incident for everyone involved and we are doing our best to support the family and all affected,” Tarryn Gibson, the safari company’s head of communications told The Associated Press on Thursday. Gibson did not identify the tourist who was killed, and said her family wished for privacy. The company also asked people to not share the video of the attack online.

While many wildlife parks in southern Africa teem with dangerous animals like elephants and lions, such incidents are rare, although they sometimes do occur with fatal consequences due to the unpredictability of wild animals.

Keith Vincent, chief executive officer of the safari company, said rough terrain minimized chances of an escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough” he said.

Elephant attack leaves American woman dead in Zambia's Kafue National Park

Johannesburg — An elephant attack that left an American woman dead in Zambia was captured in harrowing cellphone video over the weekend. The clip, shot by tourists in Zambia's Kafue National Park, begins inside an open safari vehicle during a game drive.

In the distance, a large bull elephant can be seen coming toward the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen in the video clip, but someone is heard, saying: "Oh my goodness," before a man says, "it's coming fast."

The vehicle stops and then another voice, presumably the game ranger, tries to ward off the elephant verbally as the large pachyderm hooks its tusks onto the vehicle and rolls it several times.

Family members  confirmed that Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old Minnesotan, was killed in the attack. In the post on Facebook, Rona Wells said her mother had died in "a tragic accident while on her dream adventure."

Mattson, a retired loan officer, was 11 days into a month-long vacation overseas, her family told WCCO, describing her as "adventurous" and "loved by everybody."

Wilderness Safaris, which operates the tour in the Zambian park, said in a statement that it was cooperating with national authorities to investigate the incident and it offered condolences to Mattson's family.

Wilderness said the other tourists traveling with Mattson were also Americans, four of whom sustained minor injuries in the attack.

"Our guides are extremely well trained, but sadly the terrain and vegetation was such that the route became blocked," the company said, explaining that the ranger "could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough."

Mattson was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa after the incident but succumbed to her injuries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest national park at 8,650 square miles. It's a popular tourist destination as it's home to five of sub-Saharan Africa's iconic big animal species, lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffalo.

Safari guests observing lions at an elephant carcass over the weekend were “stunned” to witness the pride turning ferociously against an interloper.

The accompanying footage , captured in South Africa’s Thornybush Nature Reserve, shows the lions appearing content alongside the carcass after their feast.

But one lion, front and center at the carcass, was from a rival pride and that spelled trouble.

“The young Avoca Male casually walked into the Monwana Pride and fed with them on an elephant carcass (as if he was part of the pride),” photographer Almero Klingenberg , who captured the footage, explained via Instagram. “A few minutes later, Mapoza showed up and together with his sons, they chased the intruder away.”

That’s understating matters based on the graphic footage.

Cameron Scott, owner of Royal Ngala Safaris, shared the footage and stated that guests were “stunned” by the “chaos” that unfolded.

Scott continued: “The young Avoca male Lion joins the Monwana pride on an Elephant carcass and is immediately disciplined and chased off by my favorite blue-eyed Mapoza and his boys!

“He’s lucky to escape alive.”

Mapoza is a large dominant male lion who’s blind in his right eye, which is blueish-gray in color. Thornybush Nature Reserve refers to Mapoza as “The Lion With One Eye.”

US tourist, 80, killed in attack by ‘aggressive’ bull elephant while on safari in Zambia

An 80-year-old American woman was killed during a wildlife safari in Zambia after an “aggressive” bull elephant “unexpectedly” charged at the vehicle, the tour operators said.

The incident happened at around 9.30am local time on 30 March at the Kafue National Park in Zambia and the shocking video of the moment was captured and posted on social media.

The video showed the adult male elephant chasing the car which came to a halt as the animal closed in. The elephant then knocked the vehicle over as the guide screamed, “Hey, hey, hey!”

The woman has been identified as Gail Mattson by her family, according to ABC News . Safari operators, Wilderness Destinations, said the elephant “ unexpectedly charged” at the vehicle that was on an excursion with six guests and a guide.

“An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp,” the company said in a statement to ABC News.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Wilderness CEO Keith Vincent said.

The group, which was staying at the Lufupa Camp inside the largest game reserve in Africa, had gone out for a photography tour at the time of the attack, the Telegraph reported.

The park dispatched a helicopter to the scene. The woman was airlifted and transferred to a hospital in South Africa after suffering unspecified injuries. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Four other people received treatment for minor injuries.

An investigation has been launched into the incident by local police and Zambia’s Department of National Parks.

The local authorities and the US embassy in Lusaka are collaborating to repatriate the woman’s body to her family. African elephants are among the largest land mammals on Earth.

YouTube quietly rolled out a policy change this week that allows people to request the takedown of AI-generated or other synthetic content that simulates their face or voice. The move marks a shift in opinion from YouTube, where the company is now seeing deepfakes as a privacy issue, rather than just a content moderation issue. Safari Flaws Exposed Webcams, Online Accounts, and More

Usually the worst thing that happens when you have dozens of browser tabs open is you can't find the one that suddenly starts blasting random ads. But a group of macOS vulnerabilities—fixed by Apple at the end of last year—could have exposed your Safari tabs and other browser settings to attack, opening the door for hackers to grab control of your online accounts, turn on your microphone, or take over your webcam.

MacOS has built-in protections to prevent this sort of attack, including Gatekeeper, which confirms the validity of the software your Mac runs. But this hack got around those safeguards by abusing iCloud and Safari features that macOS already trusts. While poking for potential weaknesses in Safari, independent security researcher Ryan Pickren started looking at iCloud's document-sharing mechanism because of the trust inherent between iCloud and macOS. When you share an iCloud document with another user, Apple uses a behind-the-scenes app called ShareBear to coordinate the transfer. Pickren found that he could manipulate ShareBear to offer victims a malicious file. 

In fact, the file itself doesn't even have to be malicious at first, making it easier to offer victims something compelling and trick them into clicking. Pickren found that because of the trusted relationship between Safari, iCloud, and ShareBear, an attacker could actually revisit what they shared with a victim later and silently swap the file for a malicious one. All of this can happen without the victim receiving a new prompt from iCloud or realizing that anything has changed. 

Once the hacker has staged the attack, they can essentially take over Safari, see what the victim sees, access the accounts the victim is logged into, and abuse permissions the victim has granted websites to access their camera and microphone. An attacker could also access other files stored locally on the victim's Mac.

“The attacker is basically punching a hole in the browser,” says Ryan Pickren, the security researcher who disclosed the vulnerabilities to Apple. “So if you’re signed in to Twitter.com on one tab, I could jump into that and do everything you can from Twitter.com. But that’s nothing to do with Twitter’s servers or security; I as the attacker am just assuming the role that you already have in your browser.”

In October, Apple patched the vulnerability in Safari's WebKit engine and made revisions in iCloud. And in December it patched a related vulnerability in its Script Editor code automation and editing tool.

“This is an impressive exploit chain,” says Patrick Wardle, a longtime researcher and founder of the macOS security nonprofit Objective-See. “It's clever that it exploits design flaws and creatively uses built-in macOS capabilities to circumvent defense mechanisms and compromise the system.”

Pickren previously discovered a series of Safari bugs that could have enabled webcam takeovers . He disclosed the new findings through Apple's bug bounty program in mid-July, and the company awarded him $100,500. The amount is not unprecedented for Apple's disclosure program, but its size reflects the severity of the flaws. In 2020, for example, the company paid out $100,000 for a crucial flaw in its Sign In With Apple single sign-on system.

Safari and Webkit, though, have a particular set of security challenges because they are such massive platforms. And Apple has had a difficult time getting a handle on the problem, even when vulnerabilities are public for weeks or months. 

“As systems become more complex, they introduce more bugs, and that’s especially true for web browsers these days,” Pickren says. “Safari can do so many things, it’s really no surprise that there are going to be more bugs as more features come out.”

Such bugs may be common, but that doesn't make them any less serious. Attackers regularly take advantage of browser vulnerabilities for both criminal and nation-state hacking. For example, they are commonly exploited in watering hole attacks that target visitors of tainted websites. And hackers actively use unpatched “zero-day” browser vulnerabilities they've discovered or purchased, along with older bugs that they can exploit opportunistically when targets haven't updated their browsers. 

“A bug like this really stresses how crucial it is to keep your browser up to date,” Pickren says. “It's an easy thing to push off, but it's ultra-important.”
