Marvel Studios Releases New Trailer for ‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings’

Last night, Marvel Studios debuted a thrilling, brand-new trailer for Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings , featuring Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), a young Super Hero whose journey of self-discovery unfolds in this never-before-seen origin story.

“Shang-Chi’s main problem in his life is rooted in not knowing who he really is,” says Destin Daniel Cretton, the film’s director and one of the writers, who is excited to bring Shang-Chi’s story to the big screen. “He has to learn how to own every part of himself. If he doesn’t allow himself to look at all of it—the good, the bad, the light and the dark—and to own it all, he won’t be able to reach his full potential.”

Shang-Chi’s journey is told with stunning visuals, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s signature spectacle and displays of mind-blowing action, along with the talents of a diverse, stellar cast and a relatable story. Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings opens in theaters on September 3.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ is Good, Actually

Shang Chi

The arrival of a new Marvel movie guarantees three things. Some people will automatically love it, others will automatically hate it, and Walt Disney Pictures will laugh all the way to the bank. For the rest of us, though, it’s an opportunity to see where it lands in a franchise built almost exclusively on the backs of pretty okay films. There are outliers at both ends of the spectrum, from Iron Man 2 (2010) to Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), but the vast majority of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe exist as a muddled jumble of harmless action comedies that are just entertaining enough. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but it’s the reason entries that try just that much harder find it easier to stand out from the pack. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings tries harder, with its action sequences and with its Asian representation both on and off the screen. And it succeeds.

The twenty-fifth installment of the MCU follows Shaun ( Simu Liu ), a thirty-something living in San Francisco who works as a valet during the day and parties at night. His best friend, Katy ( Awkwafina ), is along for the ride, and while they have no bigger plans for their lives, that’s okay by them. Their slacker lifestyle takes a hit one day, however, when Shaun is attacked on a bus by well-trained fighters and a dude named Razor Fist ( Florian Munteanu ), whose right hand is an interchangeable deadly weapon. One wicked brawl later, and Shaun reveals to his best friend that his name is actually Shang-Chi, he was trained to be a master assassin by his crime-lord father, Wenwu ( Tony Leung ), and he ran away from home as a teenager. Oh, and he has a sister who might be in danger, sending Shang-Chi and Katy off to Macau on a grand adventure.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is every bit a Marvel movie, from the expected narrative beats to a third act smothered by CG effects, but it’s also better and more engaging than many of its predecessors. The reasons are varied, but they come down to the talents on both sides of the camera doing strong work on the action front — rarely an MCU high point — while also showing audiences characters, mythologies, and worlds they haven’t seen before. It’s technically the second entry in Marvel’s Phase Four (after this year’s Black Widow ), but expect it to kick open the universe for what’s to come.

The character of Shang-Chi is one built around martial arts and an inkling of the mystical, and while both come into play here it’s the former that arrives with the most memorable fanfare. He’s meant to be an extremely talented fighter, and as a character without a mask to hide behind, the performer ideally needed to be at the very least a convincing one. Liu delivers, and while there’s all manner of digital assists, it’s clear that the actor’s background in stunts and a serious training regimen are equally deserving of credit.

Of course, the contribution of Brad Allan ( Who Am I? , The World’s End ) can’t be understated here, as his work as action director/stunt coordinator helps shape and choreograph action sequences that burst with energy and creative life. (His fight with Jackie Chan in 1999’s Gorgeous is an all-timer.) Finally, director Destin Daniel Cretton ( Short Term 12 ) and the film’s three editors wisely minimize the cuts during the fights to allow for maximum impact. Their collective work brings two of the movie’s fight sequences, the one on the bus and one on a wooden scaffolding several stories up, towards the top of the MCU’s action accomplishments.

The script, by Cretton, Dave Callaham , and Andrew Lanham , charts a familiar enough origin story and journey of self-discovery, but there’s fun and heart in the details. This being an MCU film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is unavoidably tied to titles both behind us and ahead of us, with the former coming courtesy of direct connections to Iron Man 3 (2013) and Doctor Strange (2016) in the form of character cameos and relative plot threads. The elements that are fresh to the film find their own weight, though, against the history of the franchise.

Parental issues are no stranger to superhero movies — they’re arguably a prerequisite — but they’ve never quite been handled with the nuance and emotion granted the relationship between Shang-Chi and his father. The key difference here is that the film allows Leung time to develop Wenwu into a more fleshed-out villain that we’re used to. Glimpses into the past reveal a centuries-old, power-hungry man brought down to earth by something as enticingly simple as love. His first meeting with Jiang Li ( Fala Chen ), eventual mother to Shang-Chi and Xialing ( Meng’er Zhang ), is a fight that takes on the form of dance. It’s a thing of beauty, and Leung sells the hell out of his love for her — as you’d absolutely expect from the legendary star of Hard Boiled (1992), Chungking Express (1994), In the Mood for Love (2000), and many others. The MCU has featured plenty of big villains, but few if any have the weight of Tony Leung.

Less successful are the flashbacks focused on Shang-Chi’s younger self. They accomplish their goal of setting up his past life and relationships, but the film returns unnecessarily to that same well a few times too often. The scenes stop adding anything new to the mix and instead grow redundant in their effect. The film’s third act stays mostly in the present but suffers as well due to Marvel’s fascination with big, animated finales. The closest MCU comparison here is Iron Man 3 , another film filled with character, wit, and thrills that finds its highs neutered somewhat by a bunch of animated whiz-bang shenanigans in the sky.

Performances are strong throughout — again, Tony freaking Leung is here — with Liu proving a charismatic lead and more than capable of carrying the character forward. You buy easily into his physicality, but his humanity, history, and sense of humor are every bit as important to the character. Awkwafina is, well, Awkwafina, for both better and worse. She delivers laughs and finds the heart in a character just as lost as Shang-Chi, but a few scenes allow her shtick to go on a beat or two too many. Newcomer Zhang is something of a standout as Shang-Chi’s sister and a character who’s every bit as physically talented and emotionally damaged.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings runs maybe a bit overlong — those flashbacks! — but it’s rarely less than an entertaining and at times affecting entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its Asian lead and predominantly Asian cast are overdue not just for Marvel but for big action blockbusters out of Hollywood in general, and rather than feel like a slapdash gimmick it’s clear that the themes and mythologies have been crafted with relative care. Bill Pope ‘s cinematography and Joel P. West ‘s score help pull it all together for a rousing tale of identity and redemption that should leave Marvel stans, action fans, and moviegoers more than satisfied.

How many film franchises go for as long and for as many installments as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has and still keep delivering critical favorites? The first reviews of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are calling it one of the best MCU entries yet. And those most qualified to speak on such elements offer particular praise toward the Asian representation and martial arts action as being exceptional for Hollywood blockbuster cinema in general.

Here’s what critics are saying about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings :

Will Marvel fans love it?

“The movie full on delivers the Marvel theatrical experience you’ve been jonesing for.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“ Shang-Chi joins the ranks for me [with] Winter Soldier , Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War as some of the best that Marvel has to offer… This is the best solo film in years.” – Jon Nguyen, Flickering Myth
“One of the best origin stories in the MCU.” – Rachel Labonte, ScreenRant
“Would rank it pretty high when it comes to Marvel origin stories. I’d say maybe only the first Iron Man and Black Panther movies do it better.” – Brian Frederick, Pop Culture Leftovers
“As Marvel remixes go,  Shang-Chi  is one of the more successful ones. Maybe not as stylistically strong as  Black Widow  and certainly not as much of a watershed moment as  Black Panther .” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm
“[It] puts to bed any concern fans might have had about a drop off in Phase IV of the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe.” – Brandon Katz, Observer

Does it feel unique in the franchise?

“Marvel breaks its own mold on multiple fronts…  Shang-Chi is the most energized the MCU has been in years.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is most enjoyable when it shakes off the tedious franchise imperatives and forges its own path.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
“As familiar of a superhero origin story as  Shang-Chi  is, the film blessedly feels like the least Marvel of the solo films we’ve had lately.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm
“ Shang-Chi  barely feels like a superhero movie at all. If anything, it veers closer to the wistful grandeur of Disney’s live-action fairy tale adaptations.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter
“At its most basic level this is very much another MCU affair. From a critical point of view, there is no reinvention of the wheel.” – Therese Lacson, The Beat

How well does it handle the Asian representation?

“Getting to see myself reflected in a Marvel blockbuster flick, despite its flaws, makes me excited for what more we might see from Shang-Chi.” – Therese Lacson, The Beat
“Cultural authenticity abounds in  Shang-Chi .” – Nancy Wang Yuen, io9
“ Shang-Chi makes major strides in representation; more than just plastering Asian faces on a screen, the film dives particularly deep into the Asian American experience.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“This film often feels like an actual reflection of the Asian American experience versus an uninspired Hollywood imitation.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“It’s a bit tiring to see another dragon trope involved in an Asian-led film. Which is a shame as there are subtle nods for the Asian diaspora to relish.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine

How are the fight scenes?

“You’ll be happy to hear the best parts of  Shang-Chi  are its elevated fight scenes.” – Nancy Wang Yuen, io9
“The action is fantastic… The choreography is the best yet in the MCU.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine
“ Shang-Chi ’s action conveys the one thing so many superhero films are missing: flavor… [It’s] the studio’s best action to date by a country mile.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“The best action I’ve seen in the MCU.” – Jon Nguyen, Flickering Myth
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings doesn’t just boast the best action of the MCU, it manages to do it with two (two!) eye-popping action sequences that unspool before the film’s first act is over.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire
“I’m no fan of fighting sequences but I enjoyed most of the ballet-like style Cretton devised for his movie.” – Patricia Puentes, Ask

Mandarin - Shang-Chi

Does it live up to its influences?

“The movie may not live up to [its influences and] ambitions — the action is still too aesthetically anonymous, too CG-polished — but it’s nice that it has them to begin with.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
“It still only manages pale imitations of its influences: the wuxia-inspired sequences feeling more weightless than anything out of  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , and the Jackie Chan-inspired fight scenes feel more like the Hollywood takes on Chan’s work.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm

How is Destin Daniel Cretton as director?

“He directs the film with such an infectious energy, always putting his characters first, and making you so invested in their individual journeys.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“ At last , here is a director who knows martial arts is the core of the material, so Cretton ensures  Shang-Chi ’s action department will get full credit.” – Nguyen Le, JumpCut Online

How does the movie look?

“Wait until you see the gorgeous design of Ta-Lo in this film. Tons of eye candy and amazing creature designs.” – Brian Frederick, Pop Culture Leftovers
“There are stunning wuxia-inspired sequences that are as gorgeous as they are impressive.” – Eric Eisenberg, Cinema Blend
“[Cretton] manages to at least keep the film visually coherent (and in many of the wuxia-inspired moments, quite beautiful) even as it descends into CGI bombast.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm

How is Simu Liu as Shang-Chi?

“Liu knocks it out of the park as Shang-Chi, adding a tad of levity to the known-to-be-serious comic book character.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine
“Simu Liu gives a charismatic, nicely understated performance, which helps mitigate the muddled storytelling.” – Tim Grierson, Screen International
“He’s responsible, respectful, charming, and carefree, making him instantly relatable to Asian-Americans across the country.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“As magnetic as Liu is in action, he struggles in quieter moments with a script that gives the character more backstory than personality.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter
“Shang-Chi seems to have inherited much of his father’s martial-arts prowess but not nearly enough of his charisma.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

Awkwafina and Simu Liu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

What about Awkwafina?

“Awkwafina in particular becomes a vital source of levity for the script, and a welcoming audience surrogate as the film ramps up to a large battle.” – Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
“Awkwafina, who has proven to be effortless in a layered role with  The Farewell … isn’t allowed to go beyond ‘funnywoman’ here.” – Nguyen Le, JumpCut Online
“Awkwafina is, well, Awkwafina, for both better and worse… A few scenes allow her shtick to go on a beat or two too many.” – Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

And Tony Leung as the villain?

“The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best ‘villain’ yet… Leung effortlessly proves he’s one of our greatest screen actors of the past 40 years.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm
“One of the MCU’s best villains… Perhaps the best MCU villain to-date.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“Tony Leung delivers one of the finest performances we’ve ever seen in the MCU and should go down as one of the franchise’s greatest antagonists.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“It’s the best performance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because the passion and grief it expresses is appropriately Leung-sized.” – Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
“His performance anchors the film and expands the potential of the comic-book villain.” – Shirley Li, The Atlantic
“Leung as Wenwu provides depths of character in what could be a one-dimensional bad guy. However, the film’s real villain is grief.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine

Are there any other standouts?

“The dark horse is Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing… In a lesser film, she would be discarded to the sidelines, but there’s remarkable shading to her character that gives her some of the film’s best moments.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“Michelle Yeoh also plays a pivotal role, and is absolutely wonderful.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com

How is the film’s representation of women?

“The strongest fighters depicted are the women…[but] even as  Shang-Chi  presents more badass women than most Marvel films, they exist to support a man’s journey.” – Nancy Wang Yuen, io9
“In drawing attention to Xialing’s personal history of neglect, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings insistently telegraphs its awareness of its own shortcomings.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
“Zhang’s Xialing has the most compelling backstory, but at times, it feels she is just there as set dressing for the main hero. It’s unfortunate she isn’t given more to do.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine

Does the screenplay do the rest of the movie justice?

“The script, by Cretton, Dave Callaham, and Andrew Lanham, charts a familiar enough origin story and journey of self-discovery, but there’s fun and heart in the details.” – Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects
“ Shang-Chi  does have some pacing issues where the story, at times, becomes convoluted with so much information to set up the world of Ta Lo and how it relates to the MCU as a whole.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine
“The film’s middle sags with exposition and backstory, as its screenwriters attempt to maneuver around a few finicky problems.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Is the movie funny?

“The funny in  Shang-Chi  seems to reflect a millennial sensibility, making the mixture of action and comedy feel fresh for the MCU.” – Nancy Wang Yuen, io9
“ Shang-Chi ’s brand of humor almost reminded me of Taika Waititi’s  Thor: Ragnarok .” – Patricia Puentes, Ask
“The cast manages to carry a strong sense of tongue-in-cheek humor throughout the film, with one later surprise character hailing straight from the Taika Waititi school of comedy.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm
“The jokes keep  Shang-Chi  from tipping over into self-importance, but they also rob it of some of its wonder.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter

What about its themes of family?

“They’ve never quite been handled with the nuance and emotion granted the relationship between Shang-Chi and his father.” – Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects
“Liu infuses these struggles with a real believability and charm.” – Kate Erbland, IndieWire
“ Black Widow is like the MCU worst family vacation scenario for superheroes, while Shang-Chi is a family reunion and a long-lost relative revelation.” – Jana Monji, Age of the Geek

Is Shang-Chi … sexier than your typical Marvel movie?

“This might be Marvel at its steamiest.” – Nguyen Le, JumpCut Online
“In a swerve uncharacteristic of superhero films…  Shang-Chi ’s prologue cranks up the sexiness and romance [with] one of the most passionate and distinct set-pieces Marvel has ever placed on film.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors
“Leung, one of our best cinematic romantic leads and devastatingly handsome to boot, manages to inject sex appeal into a Marvel film with merely a look.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Does it stick the landing?

“The finale of  Shang-Chi  is truly unlike anything that’s come before. It’s pure unadulterated spectacle, and so fantastical, it’s very much like watching a comic splash page come to life.” – Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.com
“Though it falls victim to the dreaded Marvel third-act CGI muddle,  Shang-Chi ‘s is one of the more forgivable ones, if only because it verges on full fantasia.” – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm
“One of my biggest complaints is the heavy use of CGI in the final third of the film, which often felt clunky and ended up overshadowing the emotional scenes.” – Therese Lacson, The Beat
“ Shang-Chi employs its muddled third act with reckless, disappointing abandon…[the] final act demolition derby is an MCU weakness writ large.” – Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors

Will it make us excited for the MCU’s future?

“ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  presents a bright future for Marvel Studios and the expanded cinematic universe.” – Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies
“Given what’s on show here, the future for  Shang-Chi  and Asian representation in the MCU looks bright.” – Laura Sirikul, Empire Magazine
“ Shang-Chi is a step in the right direction, but we’ll have to see how Phase Four plays out to see if the MCU is really embracing diversity in a way that includes people of Asian descent.” – Jana Monji, Age of the Geek

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings   is in theaters on September 3, 2021.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Review

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

03 Sep 2021

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Being the first of anything comes with a lot of pressure and responsibility. Black Panther was the first film in the MCU to celebrate Black and African culture. Captain Marvel became the first women-led film in the franchise. Now, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings marks the MCU ’s first Asian-led superhero film. Of course, there have been characters of Asian descent in the MCU before, including Wong ( Benedict Wong ) from Doctor Strange , Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) from Thor , and Jimmy Woo ( Randall Park ) from Ant-Man And The Wasp and WandaVision . But they’ve always been the main heroes’ sidekick, flunkey, or comic relief. Shang-Chi features not only the first Asian protagonist but also a predominantly Asian cast. Happily, Asians can collectively breathe a sigh of relief—because the movie is good. Actually, it’s really good.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

After running away from his father, formidable crime lord Wenwu ( Tony Leung ), Shang-Chi, ( Simu Liu ) starts over in San Francisco, where he meets his best friend, Katy ( Awkwafina ). Living the loafer lifestyle, Shang-Chi’s daily rituals include breakfast with Katy’s family, working a valet shift, and drinking and karaoking the night away. Basically, living the good life. However, after ten years, Shang-Chi’s past finally catches up with him. Driven by vengeance fuelled by heart-breaking loss, Wenwu forcefully reunites with his son and daughter Xialing ( Meng’er Zhang ) in hopes of recruiting them — along with Katy— into his terrorist organisation, The Ten Rings, an evil empire built around the power of ten ancient rings that Wenwu wears around his arms to generate blasts of energy.

Shang-Chi thrives when the scenes are rooted in the real world, especially in its fight sequences.

Co-writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton , best known for indie darling Short Term 12 , understands family dynamics and beautifully sets the tone for a heart-warming story syringed with humour. But despite the humanity on show, it’s the innovative martial arts that are the USP. Although there are many mystical elements, Shang-Chi thrives when the scenes are rooted in the real world, especially in its fight sequences. The action is fantastic, thanks to fight coordinator Andy Cheng and supervising stunt coordinator, the late Brad Allan , to whom the film is dedicated, the choreography the best yet in the MCU. A bruising bus battle between Shang-Chi and Wenwu’s henchmen is even more hypnotic than the trailers suggest, Liu showing off a barrage of blistering moves to disarm his father’s lackeys. The action doesn’t rely heavily on digital trickery in the real-world; but even its CG set-pieces within the fantasy realm of the hidden magical city of Ta Lo, which Shang-Chi has mysterious ties to, do not diminish the beauty of the diverse fighting styles. These fight scenes are truly gratifying; the martial arts in an early sequence between Wenwu and powerful warrior Jiang Li (Fala Chen) feel more like a dance and the result is simply mesmerising.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

The cast is stellar. Liu knocks it out of the park as Shang-Chi, adding a tad of levity to the known-to-be-serious comic book character. As expected, Awkwafina hits all the comedic cues while remaining Shang-Chi’s anchor through his journey of self-discovery. The chemistry between Liu and Awkwafina is palpable, exuding a real sense of a found family. Perhaps the most intriguing character is Zhang’s Xialing who has the most compelling backstory; but at times, feels she is just there as set dressing for the main hero. It’s unfortunate she isn’t given more to do.

A dashing Leung as Wenwu provides depths of character in what could be a one-dimensional bad guy. However, the film’s real villain is grief. Grief drives Wenwu to perform nefarious acts, even at the expense of his own children. For those of Asian descent, grief is difficult to overcome. In an early scene, Katy’s mother comments on how moving on from a loved one is a Western idea. As such, Leung’s performance is filled with tangible anger and anguish that really brings the character to life.

In the debit column, Shang-Chi does have some pacing issues where the story, at times, becomes convoluted with so much information to set up the world of Ta Lo and how it relates to the MCU as a whole. The rushed ending makes some of the character arcs feel unearned and brushed aside. Also, it’s a bit tiring to see another dragon trope involved in an Asian-led film. Which is a shame as there are subtle nods for the Asian diaspora to relish — Shang-Chi taking off his shoes before entering Katy’s home, Katy’s grandmother asking Shang-Chi when he and Katy are getting married, and Ronny Chieng’s mystery character telling Katy that he speaks “ABC” (American-born Chinese) — that feel never feel forced or over-played. It’s a winning blend of Chinese culture mixed with the successful Marvel formula that avoids the typical Asian clichés and stereotypes of accents and bad drivers, while pointedly calling out some of the racial errors from Marvel's past. Given what’s on show here, the future for Shang-Chi and Asian representation in the MCU looks bright.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Meet the Characters of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

By the D23 Team

It’s almost time! In just a few days, Marvel Studios will debut Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings … an all-new, totally epic adventure that introduces the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest Super Hero—Shang-Chi—in an origin story that blazes across the big screen with never-before-seen, ultra-mind-blowing action; stunning visuals; and the MCU’s signature spectacle, with lots of heart and humor to boot.

The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, whom we first meet as Shaun—a young man living in San Francisco and working as a parking valet when a group of assassins abscond with a pendant that his mother gave him when he was young. Shang-Chi and his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) then leave their comfortable Bay Area lives and journey to Macau, in an effort to warn Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) that danger is coming for her as well. As the film unfolds, Shang-Chi is forced to confront the past he thought he’d left behind. And when he’s drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization led by his estranged father, Shang-Chi realizes he must stop him and his dangerous cabal once and for all.

Before we enter the world of The Ten Rings, let’s take a gander at the cast of characters we’ll soon be meeting—and learn a little bit about ’em:

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Shang-Chi/Shaun (Simu Liu) At the beginning of the film, we first meet Shang-Chi in present day San Francisco—and he seems like an everyday guy. Shaun, who is working at a hotel as a parking valet, has an unknown backstory. But very soon, Shang-Chi’s past returns, and things change quickly and irrevocably. Trained since childhood by the mysterious Ten Rings organization, Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn back into his father’s web.

“Shang-Chi’s core issue is rooted in not knowing who he really is,” says director Destin Daniel Cretton. “Over the course of the film, he must learn how to own every part of himself. There’s residue left inside that he hasn’t dealt with from the traumatic things that happened to him as a kid.” Liu adds, “The movie is about that evolution and personal growth of self-acceptance and self-love. And it’s something that I absolutely think will be relatable, whether you’re Chinese or Asian or not.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) Shang-Chi’s father, Xu Wenwu, is the feared leader of the Ten Rings Organization, which has lurked in the shadows of the MCU since the very beginning. As Leung explains, “I had a phone meeting with [director Cretton] and, of course, he couldn’t tell me much about the story at that time, so I had only little hints about my character and the story. But I felt very good talking to him, and I thought I could trust him.”

“Tony sees Wenwu as by no means a villain,” Cretton adds, “but as a broken human who is chasing after things that were torn away from him, that he desperately wants back. I’m so thankful that Tony came on board. It’s so subtle and so brilliant, the way that he can create a character who can be so brutal, but show us that it’s rooted in Wenwu’s desperation to be loved and to show love.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Katy (Awkwafina) As Shang-Chi’s oldest, closest friend, Katy—a Chinese American—is free-spirited, carefree, and fiercely loyal. But she’s only ever known him as Shaun, and knows nothing about his past as the movie’s story begins. Describing Katy, Awkwafina explains, “Katy is Shang-Chi’s reckless Asian American friend who he meets when he relocates to the States in San Francisco. Katy and her family kind of take him in, and he has a very close relationship with her and her family… She almost feels like she needs to protect [him], which is ironic because he is more than necessarily equipped to take care of himself. But Katy meets him in school by taking down a bully who is picking on him. Since then, their relationship has kind of evolved, and they bicker a lot. But I think that it’s very obvious that they have a lot of love for each other.”

While she’s a very dependable companion, and is willing to accompany Shang-Chi on his quest, Katy’s also got her own journey of self-discovery to contend with. “I think Katy, throughout the movie, is really questioning her own mission in life, her goals and her sense of identity,” says Awkwafina. “I think that’s something that we all ask ourselves at some point, and we all kind of struggle with. So, she is a very real character to me, and I relate to her a lot.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Li (Fala Chen) Li, an independent spirit and skilled martial artist, is the compassionate and devoted mother of Shang-Chi and Xialing. The Julliard-trained actress describes Li as “a warrior and a Kung Fu master. Her power lies not only in her physical form but also in her ability to bring out the best in everyone who’s around her.” Cretton adds, “The quiet strength she brought to this character was exactly what was needed to stand face to face with Tony Leung’s Wenwu.”

“Fala is a wonderful actress, super-talented,” says Liu. “She was such a joy to work with. [She] brings a loving, warm beauty to the film. Her grace is something intrinsic to the story. That comes from Fala’s heart, and she brought so much love to the character of Li.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) When her estranged brother Shang-Chi suddenly shows up in her life, Xialing must choose between the solitary life she’s created for herself or join her brother in the fight against the Ten Rings. As Cretton says, “Shang-Chi needed to be surrounded by two strong female characters who represented the two worlds that he’s from. It was very important to us to find an actor [to play his sister] who was from China, who grew up there, who speaks Mandarin as their primary language. Meng’er, from the first time I met her, was pure magic.” After an exhaustive international search, Zhang rose to the front of the line as the perfect choice for Xialing. Trained in theater and musical theater, Zhang had never appeared on film before!

Describing her character, Zhang says, “Xialing is someone you don’t want to mess with, even Shang-Chi knows not to cross her. She is a very tough and independent woman, cold on the outside, but has a warm and fragile part deep down inside. She had a traumatic childhood, but she didn’t sink—she got stronger. She’s like a flower that survives the coldest winter.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu) One of Wenwu’s most loyal soldiers, Razor Fist found family and purpose in the Ten Rings. He rose through the ranks to become one of the organization’s strongest and most brutal fighters. Razor Fist, as his name suggests, wears a prosthetic for his amputated left arm, in the form of a giant razor. “Razor Fist could have easily been a one-dimensional villain with a sword for an arm until Florian showed up,” says Cretton. “Florian just nailed it. When you first meet Razor Fist, he may seem somewhat of a cliché cutout of a villain, but you’ll soon have a different view of Razor Fist, and you’ll learn to love him like I did.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Ying Nan (Michelle Yeoh) Ying Nan, aunt to Shang-Chi and Xialing, is a respected leader and warrior of Ta Lo—and she represents a positive, nurturing connection to their mother. “Ying Nan is able to impart upon them their strength, and their ability to embrace who they really are,” says the celebrated actress. “She understands that Xialing and Shang-Chi have been running away from their identity. My character teaches them that we cannot run away from who we are, from the people who come before us. Our ancestors, our parents make us who we are—and we have to learn to embrace the good and the bad. I think the theme of the film is embracing your destiny and truly making yourself and the world around you a better place.”

Shang-Chi Brings Compelling New Heroes and Awe-Inspiring Action to the MCU

Disney welcomes simu liu, awkwafina, michelle yeoh, tony leung, and meng’er zhang to the marvel cinematic universe. io9 reviews the first phase 4 film..

Simu Liu as Shang-Chi in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Marvel’s Shang-Chi   and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a blend of opposites: otherworldly martial arts grounded by slacker humor. From fast-paced split kicks to lyrical dance-fights, the film deserves to be seen on the big screen. But of course, even if you didn’t feel it was safe to do so, that’s the only way you can see the Phase 4 MCU film— Shang-Chi is the first Disney movie to screen in-theaters only after a series of hybrid releases on Disney+ due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic .

Based on the Marvel Comics character, Shang-Chi was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with a script by Dave Callaham, Andrew Lanham, and Cretton. The film follows the titular character ( played by Simu Liu ), a Chinese American millennial who must confront his past to fulfill his destiny. When we meet him, he’s a valet driver in San Francisco, California, working alongside his carefree bestie Katy (Awkwafina). He’s kept his martial arts skills hidden until now, but Shang-Chi has secrets—family secrets that date back a thousand years. Our hero begins a journey of self-discovery in Macau after receiving a mysterious letter from his sister, Xialing (newcomer Meng’er Zhang) about their common enemy: their father Wenwu (Tony Leung), also known as “The Mandarin” (a name already familiar to MCU fans ).

While the original comics depicted Fu Man Chu as Shang-Chi’s father, the film thankfully scraps the racial stereotype and presents a complex—even sympathetic—villain in Wenwu. This is also a huge improvement to the whitewashed casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange . Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has since acknowledged the casting of Swinton as a mistake while prioritizing more respectful adaptations from now on. Cultural authenticity abounds in Shang-Chi . First, it has a majority Chinese cast from the diaspora—many of whom speak a natural mixture of Mandarin Chinese and English dialogue depending on the speaker and context. In addition, the costumes seem to be a blend of eastern and western influences, reflecting the culture of the Chinese American heroes. Finally, the fantasy elements appear to be inspired by Chinese wuxia films, not exotic Asian stereotypes.

Considering this is a Marvel superhero film, you’ll be happy to hear the best parts of Shang-Chi are its elevated fight scenes . When Wenwu meets Jiang Li (played by Fala Chen), their poetic martial arts strokes with interlocking arms and long gazes are the most sensual combat sequence to ever grace the Marvel universe. The training sessions between Jiang Nan (played by Michelle Yeoh ), Shang-Chi, and Xialing exhibit Yeoh’s martial arts prowess and grace. And when Shang-Chi gives an impressive display of his fight skills—including a split kick to knock out two opponents simultaneously on a public bus —he lives up to his comic book nickname, “Master of Kung Fu.” The film’s other highlight is the ability to weave in some truly laugh-out-loud scenes without overwhelming the kinetic action or dramatic story. While Marvel films are known for their dashes of humor, the funny in Shang-Chi seems to reflect a millennial sensibility, making the mixture of action and comedy feel fresh for the MCU.

And again, though this is Shang-Chi’s film, the strongest fighters depicted are the women. Xialing is an incredibly powerful fighter with something to prove given her experiences growing up under Wenwu. Jiang Li is Wenwu’s most formidable opponent while Jiang Nan serves as a martial arts teacher for Shang-Chi. Even Awkwafina’s Katy is no damsel in distress. But perhaps to be expected, the women serve primarily as Shang-Chi’s teachers, sidekicks, and foes. So even as Shang-Chi presents more badass women than most Marvel films, they exist to support a man’s journey. Thankfully, the film does tease the possibility of seeing some of the women again—providing hope that they can be developed further.

Shang-Chi—as the first Asian American superhero to headline a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—is a necessary and worthy addition to the pantheon and Hollywood as a whole. He brings unmatched fighting skills and never takes himself too seriously—earning him the right to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the full roster of MCU superheroes. Not to mention how thrilling it is to see a new group of badass Asian women ready to shake up the movie-verse.

Shang-Chi   and the Legend of the Ten Rings will debut in theaters exclusively on September 3, 2021.

Correction 8/30/2021, 5:40 p.m. ET: A previous version of this post misspelled the Xialing character name.

The cast and crew of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings talk action and authenticity

NEWS DISNEY+

The cast and crew of marvel studios’ shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings talk action and authenticity.

The latest installation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has arrived in cinemas  and is  now streaming on Disney+ for all subscribers.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings  stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organisation. A significant amount of the film's shooting and production happened right here in Australia.

We sat in on a recent press conference with producer Kevin Feige, co-writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton, and actors Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Sir Ben Kingsley, and local favourite Ronny Chieng—who studied at the University of Melbourne and lived in Australia for several years.

It’s been a while since Marvel Studios introduced audiences to a new hero. Co-writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton talked about the process of bringing this story to the screen, saying, “I personally connect with Shang-Chi’s journey. I love that this is a Super Hero that doesn’t get splashed with chemicals to get his superpower.”

Instead, it’s simpler than that. President of Marvel Studios and producer Kevin Feige shares, “It was really the story of this father and son.” Cretton expands, “It is a journey of self-discovery, of growing up, of learning how to finally deal with pain that he’s been running away from his entire life. And when he is finally able to look inside into his past and embrace good, bad, the joy, the pain, and accept it all as a part of himself, that’s when he finally steps into his big boy shoes, and I think that’s kind of what we’re all doing as humans in some way or another. I really connect with that.”

Sir Ben Kingsley, who reprises his role as Trevor Slattery in this film, explains, “I think when you hear Destin, you know that the motives behind telling this story are pure, crystal clear, lucid, pure motives. They are life-enhancing and they’re not patronising because they do introduce in a beautiful way memory, ancestry, loss, and families torn apart and reunited and reconfigured. All this is from Destin’s heart and Kevin’s heart and the writers’ heart.”

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Film Review: Marvel’s Martial-Arts Saga Nails the Characters and the Kicks

Tony Leung delivers what might be the superhero genre’s best performance yet in a film that blends dazzling fight choreography and dramatic depth

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

This review of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was first published on August 23.

Marvel Comics creators Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin originally conceived martial-arts hero Shang-Chi as a loose composite of the imagery and mythologies of Bruce Lee, Caine from “Kung Fu” (whom Lee created), and Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. If Marvel Studios has thus far made slow progress in developing solo adventures for its many superheroes of color, it takes another successful stride, if not quite as sizable as “Black Panther,” with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a film that builds simultaneously on the lexicon of 50 years of Hong Kong action films and the thematic boilerplate of MCU origin stories.

Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) injects an earnest, charming humility to the character’s introduction into Marvel’s world of larger than life conflicts, while Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh provide Hong Kong bona fides as his father and aunt, both of whom are eager to indoctrinate him in the secrets of wuxia storytelling.

We meet Shang-Chi (Liu), hiding in San Francisco as a hotel valet under the name Shaun, an obfuscation his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) later rightfully points out is a lazy way to keep a low profile when his father Wenwu (Leung) is a thousand-year-old warrior with super-powered bracelets, endless resources, and foot soldiers around the globe working for his organization, the Ten Rings.

Disney Shang-Chi Trailer Simu Liu

After defeating a team of henchmen that came in search of a necklace given to him by his late mother Jiang Li (Fala Chen, “The Undoing”), Shang decides to reconnect with his estranged sister Xialing (newcomer Meng’er Zhang), worrying that she will be targeted next. He arrives in Macau to discover not only that she does not need his help, but she has also established a not-so-secret empire of her own as a fight broker; the postcard that he thought she sent is actually a decoy from Wenwu to obtain her matching necklace as well.

With Katy in tow providing a running commentary for each new development, Shang and Xialing get captured by their father, who brings them to his stronghold to divulge his reasons for seeking their childhood keepsakes: Wenwu hopes to find a path to a village hidden deep in a neighboring forest where he believes Jiang Li is being kept prisoner. Despite their troubled upbringing under Wenwu’s alternately merciless tutelage of Shang and seeming indifference to Xialing, the two of them are torn about whether or not to help him. But when they find an opportunity to access the village — and learn from their aunt Jiang Nan (Yeoh) the real secret behind the voice summoning their father — Shang, Xialing, and even Katy join the fight to stop Wenwu, in the process confronting a family legacy that their father hopes to fulfill and that they are determined to rewrite.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (“Just Mercy”) and cowritten by Cretton, his frequent collaborator Andrew Lanham, and David Callaham (“Mortal Kombat”), “Shang-Chi” oozes with lore from classic Asian martial arts movies (themselves drawn, in turn, from classic cultural storytelling tropes) from the ‘70s to today and enhanced with the best computer-generated imagery that money can buy. You can see echoes of everything from “The Big Boss” to “House of Flying Daggers” (and plenty of Shaw brothers and Tsui Hark movies in between) in the storytelling and set pieces; for the uninitiated, it offers an overview of the genre, almost like a Quentin Tarantino movie, whose influences and inspirations will be fun to uncover and explore on their own after future viewings.

a journey of self discovery with shang

More importantly, the writing trio has created a fully fleshed-out character with Shang-Chi rather than a caricature or pastiche of the martial-arts icons on whose shoulders stands their hero, who possesses the abilities to defeat any opponent coupled with a motivation to avoid fighting at any cost.

At the beginning of the film, Shang is torn between wanting to forge his own path and yielding to the filial piety baked into his upbringing and reinforced through years of grueling martial-arts training. Indeed, it’s receiving his first “adult” assignment from his father (to murder the man responsible for his mother’s death) that instigates his journey of self-discovery. What the film does well is to showcase how Shang discovers that he’s able to achieve fulfillment not by ignoring the past but by confronting it head on, and eventually seeking balance between his father’s indefatigable thirst for power and his mother’s pursuit of harmony.

That this is represented in some really extraordinary fight choreography only adds dimensionality to Shang’s journey; as Simu Liu exploits his opportunity as a relative unknown on screen to the advantage of a character who audiences are watching discover himself, Cretton also leverages Tony Leung’s veteran status (not just as an occasional Asian action star but as one of the most accomplished and gifted actors in the world) to lend gravitas to the choices that lead Shang towards his inevitable path to superhero-dom.

Put simply, Leung never does too much in a scene, and he conveys subdued romantic longing better than almost any actor in the last 40 years. Here, he gives what is probably the best-ever performance in a superhero movie, certainly for a villain; with his possession of the Ten Rings, Wenwu has all he could ever want, fears nothing, and desires only that which transcends all human abilities, enhanced or otherwise — his wife back by his side. Leung conveys effortless authority leavened with a distant sadness, and it makes viewers care, both about him and about the overall stakes of Shang’s evolution, so that when the film pivots into world-ending sequences where monsters and martial-arts choreography become more important than the characters, audiences can still be invested, or at least less put off by familiar climactic tropes.

The action is all terrific, from Shang’s first display of skill in an accordion commuter-bus brawl to a showdown with the forces of evil on the back of a mythical flying dragon. Unfortunately, “Shang-Chi” does not always flow smoothly between its scenes of exposition and setup and these explosive set pieces, as Cretton repeatedly prefers first to study the characters and their motivations and then to put them through their paces, instead of doing both at the same time. It’s honestly an admirable choice in a genre designed quite literally for cutting to the chase, but it’s a pacing better suited for “Crouching Tiger” or one of Zhang Yimou’s action-oriented films than Marvel’s. Some of these reflective moments undercut the urgency of the final battle, much less Shang’s encroaching self-discovery.

Still, Liu leads the cast with a workmanlike understatedness that evokes the sturdy invisibility of someone like Matt Damon, a comparison that seems more apt since Cretton has indicated that he took inspiration from “Good Will Hunting” for the hero. As his platonic best friend Katy, Awkwafina rides a thin line between appropriately pointing out the incredible nature of each new situation in which they find themselves and undercutting the emotional weight of a story that needs to be at least a little bit serious, but she delivers a youthful charge that better connects this film to, say, Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man” entries and the other Marvel films better than reams of interconnected mythology ever could. Meanwhile, Meng’er Zhang is a great acting discovery playing Xialing, a character who deserves to be lionized and spun off like Shuri was after “Black Panther,” and Yeoh once again supplies a unfussy, stabilizing presence both on screen and as a performer that grounds all of the mystical mumbo-jumbo and makes it seem believable.

Following the cathartic reset of “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel’s Phase Four films cannot help but feel a little bit like they are struggling to recapture their predecessors’ magic and narrative momentum. Even if it was long overdue, or maybe precisely because it was, “Black Widow” still felt like the remnant of a timeline before heroes had reached total market saturation. “Shang-Chi,” by comparison, feels like the new beginning that its predecessor was meant to be, as much as anything, because it truly ventures in a new direction — building distantly on the world that has now become common moviegoer knowledge, but adding stylistic flourishes and an unhurried pace from Cretton that suggests it’s content to be its own story instead of a cog in a larger machine. (Truly, the only letdown comes during a post-credits scene where you’re reminded that this character will have bigger obligations to a story that’s not his own later on.)

Marvel is, of course, working tirelessly to construct the next stage(s) of its universe, but like the bamboo scaffolding that surrounds a Macau high rise, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” offers a good reminder that it’s nice to slow down and take a little extra time to explore what’s already built instead of firmly affixing your view on stories that haven’t yet been reached.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” opens in U.S. theaters September 3.

'Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings' Review: Tony Leung's Villain Eclipses The MCU's First Asian Superhero

shang-chi review

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a mouthful of a title, but with the amount of pressures riding on Marvel's first Asian-led film, perhaps it needs it. This isn't an instantly recognizable hero like Captain America, or one loaded with cultural pride like Black Panther . Shang-Chi 's history is much knottier and more complicated. The character of Shang-Chi emerged out of the '70s Brucesploitation craze — the phenomenon that followed the death of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Comic book artist Paul Gulacy even took direct inspiration from Lee, drawing Shang-Chi to look like the martial arts star. But here's where the knotty part comes in: Shang-Chi was created as a counterpart to Sax Rohmer's pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu (yes, that Fu Manchu ), enjoying his heyday as the star of '70s and '80s martial arts pulp stories before disappearing into the ether.

Shang-Chi was always a strange character to revive as Marvel Studio's first Asian superhero, but there is admittedly something intriguing about reclaiming a character created out of caricature and cultural stereotypes, and turning it into something empowering. But does Shang-Chi actually achieve this? Not really. But in the interim, it does turn out a mostly decent Marvel movie buoyed by crisp, kinetic action and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best "villain" yet.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings does the classic Marvel Studios thing and remixes the more troubling and wilder parts of the character's history into a palatable crowdpleaser — presenting our Shang-Chi ( Simu Liu ) as the son of Wenwu ( Tony Leung ), the leader of the ancient Ten Rings organization and the "real" Mandarin (a character with his own complicated cultural history) who has been leading his clandestine terrorist group from the shadows for centuries thanks to the mythical "Ten Rings" weapon he carries. Raised as an assassin from childhood, Shang-Chi ran away to the States, where he adopted a new name and life. That's how we first meet him: as Sean, a sweet San Francisco hotel valet working alongside his best friend Katy (a scene-stealing Awkwafina ), happy in their arrested development, even as their friends scoff at their low ambitions. But that all changes when Shang-Chi is attacked on a bus by a group of assassins sent by his father, and he's forced to reveal his sick martial arts skills that he's had along — thus accepting his destiny as our Chosen One of the week.

As familiar of a superhero origin story as Shang-Chi is, the film blessedly feels like the least Marvel of the solo films we've had lately. This is thanks to director Destin Daniel Cretton 's decision to drive the film by its strong character dynamics, both in the comedic double act that is Liu and Awkwafina's "two idiots" routine, and the complicated family relationship between Wenwu and his estranged children Shang-Chi and Xialing ( Meng'er Zhang , an imposing physical presence in her first feature film role). Liu and Awkwafina, both coming from the comedy scene, thrive in the first half's "fish out of water" narrative, with Liu playing the bewildered everyman well to Awkwafina's overly enthusiastic tourist. Awkwafina, in particular, shows her skills by smoothly juggling the film's best comedy moments with a few scenes of real gravity. The cast manages to carry a strong sense of tongue-in-cheek humor throughout the film, with one later surprise character hailing straight from the Taika Waititi school of comedy.

But while Liu's stuntman chops are on display in the exhilarating fight scenes choreographed by the supervising stunt coordinator Brad Allan (an elite member of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team who sadly passed shortly after making this film), the star's chance to prove his leading-man charisma is completely eclipsed by Leung, who effortlessly proves he's one of our greatest screen actors of the past 40 years with a simple roll-up of his shirtsleeves. Cretton seems to be keenly aware that he has an international superstar on his payroll and makes total use of it, treating us to many a close-up of Leung's face on the verge of tears, emotions roiling underneath the surface in that beautifully subtle, evocative way that the Hong Kong actor has perfected over the years.

It's to Shang-Chi 's benefit that the film essentially has two leads, really. Leung's Wenwu is presented as more of a tragic antihero than as a full-fledged villain, with his doomed romance with Shang-Chi's mysterious mother Jiang Li ( Fala Chen ) and his subsequent near-redemption given as much screen time as Shang-Chi's journey of self-discovery. And Leung, one of our best cinematic romantic leads and devastatingly handsome to boot, manages to inject sex appeal into a Marvel film with merely a look. Liu might be accomplished at playing the comedic everyman, but is less gifted at carrying the film's dramatic scenes, struggling to match the talents of Leung, or even Awkwafina, and portrays most of Shang-Chi's internal struggles with the same pained look.

But as a hero whose superpowers are his badass martial arts skills, Liu more than excels at the job. Shang-Chi 's fight scenes are breathtaking — whether in the bruising street-fighting scenes when Shang-Chi is dodging magical steel blades on (and outside of) a bus, or when the film goes full wuxia in scenes with Leung and Michelle Yeoh . But while Shang-Chi does manage to escape the shadow of Bruce Lee (mostly by shedding the '70s martial-arts exploitation genre entirely, which feels like a missed opportunity), it still only manages pale imitations of its influences: the wuxia-inspired sequences feeling more weightless than anything out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , and the Jackie Chan-inspired fight scenes feel more like the Hollywood takes on Chan's work — albeit one of the better Hollywood versions that actually lets the action play out onscreen instead of being edited to high hell. And Liu, as a skilled physical performer who trained hard for the role, has the physicality to pull it all off.

It almost feels cheap to criticize Shang-Chi for its dull visuals — we know at this point that the MCU "house style" flattens out even the most visually distinctive of directors, until all the films share the same muted gray color palette. Cretton has never been particularly renowned for his visual flair, coming from the character drama indie world, but manages to at least keep the film visually coherent (and in many of the wuxia-inspired moments, quite beautiful) even as it descends into CGI bombast. And though it falls victim to the dreaded Marvel third-act CGI muddle, Shang-Chi 's is one of the more forgivable ones, if only because it verges on full fantasia.

As Marvel remixes go, Shang-Chi is one of the more successful ones. Maybe not as stylistically strong as Black Widow and certainly not as much of a watershed moment as Black Panther , it is elevated by the strength of its hard-hitting fight scenes and the supporting performers — especially the Tony Leung of it all.

Shang-Chi’s Journey of Self-Discovery

Shang-Chi’s Journey of Self-Discovery

Get Tickets SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is now playing

Marvel Cinemtic fans recently experienced the origin story of fan-favorite, Natasha Romanoff in BLACK WIDOW, but soon they will be introduced to the newest superhero in the MCU. To prepare for the next installment in Marvel Phase Four and the origin story of Shang-Chi, we interviewed Destin Daniel Cretton, director of SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS.

Destin Daniel Cretton most recently directed the AMC Artisan Film JUST MERCY, starring two of Hollywood’s biggest names who have played an integral part in the success of the MCU, Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan. Cretton told us that the two actors were influential in his transition from the creative development of the smaller budget, artisan films to the blockbuster machine that is Marvel. Ryan Coogler, director of the BLACK PANTHER also played an essential role during the process, influencing Cretton’s decision with bringing his vision of the character to life and making him relevant, current so all fans could relate too him, whether you are Asian American, African American or Caucasian. “The fulfilment of a childhood dream to actually put a superhero in the world that, I could actually dress up like at Halloween, or relate to as an Asian American… with Simu was extremely fulfilling.”

a journey of self discovery with shang

A very important aspect in the creative process for Cretton was watching actor, Simu Liu transform himself into the hero, Shang-Chi, “Watching Simu bring the character to life with his humor, charisma and his intensity, was really fulfilling and magical.” He spoke about his excitement for fans who will be inspired by Shang-Chi, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, turning his pain from the past into strength. More importantly though, he is very excited for fans to discover all of the characters in SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, “I am as equally excited to introduce the world to all of these characters, they’re such a rainbow of personalities, that when you leave the theatre will be almost impossible for you to hold on to the fictional belief that all Asians are the same. Every character in this movie is so beautifully and drastically different.”

Within the rainbow of personalities, fans will be introduced to the “real” Mandarin, not the Trevor Slattery character from IRON MAN 3, but Shang-Chi’s father, Wenwu. Cretton finds the version in his movie very relatable and prefers to call the Mandarin, Wenwu. “The way Tony Leung plays him, really breaks the stereotype of the Mandarin… he’s a fully realized human being that may do things… that most of us would never do and you may not agree with. But you will relate to the reasons why he is pushed to do those things.” From the trailer, very little is known about the father of Shang-Chi but Cretton spoke briefly about the pain that is pushing Wenwu, and that it may appear vicious and scary.

One thing that fans of the comics have noticed, is the shape of the Mandarim’s rings themselves. Instead of being jeweled rings, the creative team behind SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS referenced the influences of KUNG FU HUSTLE and THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN with inspiring the design of the bracelets seen in the trailer on posters. Cretton shared that they did not want the ten rings to be on the Mandarins fingers, because it felt too similar to the previous villain in the MCU, “when that idea was birthed, it created a whole new exciting journey to go on with the ten rings.” The shape of the ten rings may be different than the comics, but we will have to wait and see if the bracelets contain the same powers.

a journey of self discovery with shang

As we wrapped up the interview, one part of the movie that Cretton could not dive deep into was the involvement of a previous MCU character, Abomination. He did go on to say though that, “The fun of working in the MCU, that it is incredibly fun and creatively fulfilling, because there is so many hanging questions from the past that you can choose to answer in your movie, or pitch to connect dots in the MCU.” You can see bits of the role Abomination plays in the journey of Shang-Chi in the newest trailer in an epic battle within a caged arena.

Get your tickets and embark on a journey of self-discovery and epic adventures when you see SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS on the big screen and an AMC near you.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Is An Action-Packed Origin Story Of Self-Discovery And Identity – Review

It’s been a long time coming – Marvel’s first Asian superhero has taken center stage in the MCU and is finally on the big screen.

a journey of self discovery with shang

Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follows the origin story of Shang-Chi as he explores his past and journeys into becoming the eventual superhero that saves the world. The movie stars Simu Liu as the titular superhero, Awkwafina (Nora Lum) as Katy, Tony Leung as The Mandarin, Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, and Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon, with Benedict Wong reprising his role as Wong and Sir Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery.

The MCU has officially begun Phase 4 and what a start it is with its introduction to Shang-Chi. Thankfully, this movie doesn’t require any prior Marvel knowledge in order to watch and enjoy it. Though some prior movies like the Iron Man trilogy laid the groundwork for Shang-Chi , this movie explains all of that for you. This really allows Shang-Chi to shine as a stand-alone origin movie.

a journey of self discovery with shang

One of the many high expectations for this film is the action, does it live up to the hype? Let’s just say it’s an absolute no-brainer that I have to highlight is the action sequences. Everyone’s been praising the fight scenes and the choreography and the praise is well-deserved. Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Andy Le (Death Dealer), and the entirety of the stunt team and choreographers expertly created something captivating and dynamic. You can tell that this team put in so much work into perfecting their stunts, and the one-shot moments are tremendously impressive.

This movie showcases so many different martial arts styles that I wish I was able to list them all off when I watched it. As someone who grew up watching a lot of wuxia movies (a genre of Chinese fiction that focuses on martial arts), Shang-Chi honors this tradition and genre in a way that makes my heart soar. Fight scenes tend to be dramatic and intense, but there were a couple of wuxia fights in this movie that were so elegant and even serene. Those wuxia scenes truly looked like beautifully choreographed dances that carried their own narratives. The mixture of multiple forms of martial arts is just as persuasive in its storytelling as the dialogue and the characters, and I love how a specific conflict of fighting styles is a mirror reflection of Shang-Chi’s identity conflict and ultimate self-acceptance.

a journey of self discovery with shang

Speaking of conflict and acceptance, I love the way this movie explores Shang-Chi’s internal conflict and his growth. Shang-Chi’s journey explores common diaspora experiences that many Asians in Western communities encounter when trying to adapt and survive. The constant struggle of fitting in between Western and Eastern societies is so poignant for many people, and this movie does not shy away from being unapologetically Chinese. Even just the fact that the characters are multilingual and will switch between English and Mandarin in the middle of a scene is an accurate reflection of how many multilingual communities communicate.

Not only that, this origin story follows the clash of different cultures as well as the turmoil of who he was and who he could be. Even just the fact that Shang-Chi changed his name to Sean is a relatable experience for many Asian immigrants who are simply trying to fit in. It’s a small, humorous moment but it definitely will resonate with many people because our names connect us to our history and our family. On the other hand, the more explicit struggle that Shang-Chi faces is whether or not he will follow in the footsteps of his father and whether he can accept that he is the culmination of everyone who had come before him. Combining that with the conflict of family tensions and balancing the importance of family, the story is multidimensional without being confusing, and the resolution is impactful. I absolutely adored watching that unfold and seeing how it rippled out, not just to Shang-Chi, but to those around him.

a journey of self discovery with shang

The friendship between Shang-Chi and Katy is so natural with a great mix of vulnerability and quippy humor that makes them so relatable. It’s a testament to Liu and Lum’s fantastic on-screen chemistry. Honestly, the rapport for the entire cast is so effortless and it genuinely feels like everyone meshes well together. Liu and Zhang also have some great moments of connection and tension that easily serves as a strong foundation to their story and relationship. This is Meng’er Zhang’s first foray onto the big screen and she absolutely kills it. Her character Xialing is captivating and it left me wanting to learn more about her which I hope Marvel really considers. I wouldn’t be upset if there was an eventual spin-off focusing solely on her because I need more of her.

We can’t talk about the cast without addressing the legends in the room, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung. Michelle Yeoh has taken Hollywood by storm and continues to reign supreme in her performances here especially when her martial arts skills shine. Tony Leung is phenomenal and is one of my favorite actors of all time, so I’m incredibly thrilled that mainstream Western audiences finally get to experience his mastery. Although his character The Mandarin, or Wen Wu, is technically the villain, Leung’s portrayal is multidimensional and sympathetic which is a much-improved contrast to his racially insensitive comic book counterpart. Also, though I was watching for the plot, I was definitely looking very respectfully at Mister Tony Leung.

a journey of self discovery with shang

I will admit that I went into this movie with low expectations. I am not someone who has watched a lot of Marvel movies or shows, nor am I an avid fan of action or superhero movies. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It is a fantastic origin story that is very friendly for viewers like me with little to no existing Marvel knowledge. Overall, I found this movie to be a must-watch; better yet, I came out of this movie wanting to watch it again and again!

Most of all, I can’t understate the cultural significance and impact of Shang-Chi and what it means to the Asian-American community. This is a major milestone for Asian representation in something as hugely accessible and prominent as Marvel. A new generation of Asian-American children now will get to see someone who looks like them on the big screen, and many older Asian-American folks can celebrate this achievement.

P. S. There are two credit scenes and both are worth sticking around for, so be sure to watch out for them. I’m excited to know what foundation they’re laying for the future and what connections will be made later down the line.

How to Begin Your Self-Discovery Journey: 16 Best Questions

Self-discovery

As part of this process, we must not only search to determine what constitutes our true selves, but let go of objects of identification we’ve long mistaken for ourselves, requiring a balance of introspection and new experiences.

So let’s set sail.

In this article, we’ll give you a range of powerful questions to help you along your journey of self-discovery and point you toward further reading and resources.

Before you continue, you might like to download our three Meaning and Valued Living Exercises for free . These creative, science-based exercises will help you learn more about your values, motivations, and goals and will give you the tools to inspire a sense of meaning in the lives of your clients, students, or employees.

What is self-discovery according to psychology, fostering self-discovery skills: 10 examples & tips, why is the process important, a look at self-discovery coaching, 3 exercises, games, and activities for adults, best worksheets and journal prompts, 16 questions to ask yourself or your clients, helpful books & apps for your journey, tools from positivepsychology.com, a take-home message.

Drawing often from the field of philosophy , psychologists point to the illumination of our daimon (or ‘true self’) as the ultimate goal of self-discovery.

Formally defined, this true self is

“the central inner force common to all human beings and yet unique to each, which is the deep source of growth… [that is] free, healthy development in accordance with the potentials of one’s generic and individual nature.”

Horney, 1950, p. 17

As part of the process of searching for our true selves, we are ultimately working to identify three things (Waterman, 2011):

  • Personal potentials
  • Our purposes for living
  • Opportunities to act upon those potentials and purposes in living

The search for our true selves, therefore:

“refers to those processes, both intuitive and reasoned, by which those [personal, purpose-related] potentials are discovered and come to attain the status of personally concordant goals that are to be actualized.”

Waterman, 2011, p. 360

According to this view, a person’s true self essentially lies beneath the surface, and our task is to find, recognize, or understand that which already exists. Once you have, you can then make choices about your life and identity that are more consistent with this self-knowledge (Waterman, 2011).

Self-discovery support

Seek a supportive atmosphere

The more time we spend in the presence of supportive family, friends, lovers, and communities , the sooner we will be likely to discover our true nature. This is because warm and encouraging atmospheres facilitate feelings of inner security while providing the freedom to have our own feelings and thoughts (Horney, 1950).

To this end, here are some ideas to consider:

  • Seek quiet spaces and time out to facilitate reflection or journaling .
  • Join a social group whose interests and passions align with your own, such as a painting, writing, or poetry group.
  • Find a coach or therapist for a safe space to pursue self-discovery.
  • Set boundaries with people who discourage your individuality, negatively affect your emotions, or put you down.
  • Seek the company of people who inspire you, make you feel positive, and challenge your perception of yourself.

Identify your drifts

Pay close attention to the things you naturally love doing, or drifts, particularly those that are personally expressive . By paying attention to the subconscious pull of these activities, you can allow them to guide you toward your true self, stemming from your genetic makeup, upbringing, and experiences (Pagedar, 2021).

  • Our drifts tend to emerge when the mind is still, so try selecting a quiet day to do some meditation or practice some relaxation techniques.
  • Try to notice activities that cause you to slip into the state of flow , as these often point us toward our drifts.
  • Consider which activities you possess a natural aptitude or talent for, perhaps using a strengths-finding exercise .
  • Think about which activities you find intrinsically motivating . These are the activities you would undertake in the absence of external rewards, such as money or the approval of others.
  • Notice times when you feel a strong sense of personal responsibility to do something or have a unique vision about how something should be carried out.

To understand why self-discovery is so important, we must consider the consequences of failing to identify our true selves.

According to Horney (1950), when a person experiences a large discrepancy between their lived and real selves, they are likely to experience a sense of alienation from themselves. This remains true even if the person is successful in their activities and receives external rewards.

Such a person may often notice themselves wondering, “ Why am I doing this when it’s not who I really am? ” The consequence is a feeling of guilt or dissatisfaction if we fail to live up to an idealized version of ourselves that we cannot be.

Besides this negative emotional toll, the problem with pursuing such an ideal is that it will be rooted in externally derived standards of worth.

To illustrate, here are some examples:

  • A student feels pressure from their parents to pursue a prestigious career in law, even though this line of work does not inspire them.
  • A famous musician has mistaken their true self with their like of the status, prestige, and social validation they receive while performing.
  • A woman’s family talks her into finding a husband and settling down when she’d rather travel the world with her friends.
  • A son feels obligated to take over the family business when he’d prefer to start his own venture.

When we cannot live in alignment with our true selves, we must spend energy attempting to deny and distort our experiences to make sense of a pervasive lack of happiness and personal fulfillment. This ongoing effort can go so far as to produce psychological states and conditions such as depression (Waterman et al., 2010).

This is why self-discovery is so important.

Our goal in life should not be to pursue imagined or externally derived ideals, but rather to develop a more realistic understanding of our strengths and limitations. By doing so, we can avoid negative psychological states and self-actualize , feel contentment, and make better contributions to the world.

Self-discovery coaching

A growing trend in coaching, self-discovery coaching is about looking beyond specific goal pursuits (e.g., “I want to improve my self-esteem ”) to discover how we can live authentically and be truly happy .

Self-discovery coaching has many components, including (Elevate Life Project, n.d.):

  • Exploring your values to live in congruence with what’s most important to you
  • Discovering grounded confidence, centeredness, and strength
  • Identifying your abilities for making easier decisions

The role of a self-discovery coach in this process is to act as co-pilot on a client’s journey toward authentic fulfillment by challenging them, imbuing them with courage, and showing compassion.

If you or your clients are looking to set off on a self-discovery journey, consider the following fun and insightful activities to get you started.

This exercise is a useful starting point for viewing yourself clearly in terms of values, beliefs, and more. The exercise guides users through a two-step process of considering themselves from the perspective of others, followed by a consideration of their self-perceptions at different times in their life.

Spontaneous collage

Collage is a fun and cathartic method of self-discovery that helps people bypass the socially protective aspects of the mind and reveal aspects of their authentic self. Best of all, no previous art experience is required.

For a great resource, check out Shelley Klammer’s 12-week online course and check out the #collageforselfdiscovery hashtag on Instagram to get inspired by others’ collages.

Kokology: The Game of Self-Discovery

Created by famous Japanese psychologists Tadahiko Nagao and Isamu Saito, kokology , the study of kokoro (“mind” or “spirit” in Japanese), is a fun and sometimes hilarious game for learning about yourself.

The game invites players to answer questions about seemingly innocent topics, such as the color of an imaginary bird that has flown in their window, to reveal profound insights in their answers.

Self-discovery journaling

Journaling and worksheets can both be hugely helpful for this purpose.

To help, look at some of the following free resources from our site:

  • Self-Awareness Worksheet for Adults This worksheet poses a series of 15 questions to help you discover more about your true self. Specifically, the questions tap into topics such as your talents/strengths, values, and barriers to living more authentically.
  • What Are My Qualities and Traits? This worksheet invites you to identify your top five and weakest two qualities from a list of 100 strengths. It then invites you to consider how you might shape, develop, and use your toolkit of identified strengths to better your life.
  • Reflecting on Three Things This worksheet invites you to explore what defines who you are. These reflections can include statements, objects, roles in life, people you admire, and ambitions.

If you’re more into journaling, see if any of the following prompts might inspire some of your upcoming entries (Hollis, 2019):

  • What things have you been doing lately that may be positively or negatively affecting your mental health ?
  • What ways can you touch or move your body that makes you feel good?
  • If you could spend the day doing anything, what would you do?
  • How do you show love to other people?
  • What are some things about you that you wish other people knew?

People with the knowledge of Wang's ideas and tourism planning have conducted field investigations, and found 12 sites across Guizhou which carry traces of Wang's spirit, Xie says.

Those sites have been pieced together into a classic learning route, along which travelers can enjoy a dialogue with the ancient thinker while having fun.

Li Xiaolong, head of the Guizhou Longchang Wang Yangming Research Institute, believes the value of each of the 12 sites is different, but their connection is very close.

"Wang Yangming came to Longchang with a heavy heart, but was light-hearted and full of hope when he left," Li says, adding that the 12 sites have preserved elements reflecting the changes Wang went through.

"When visiting each point, it is important to quieten your mind, truly enter into the thinker's inner world, and carefully appreciate and reflect upon the historical background and his life experiences. Only then can you gain something meaningful from the journey," Li says.

Zhang Lubin has been working at the Yangming Culture Park at Longchang, one of the sites, for eight years.

It was where Wang gained his philosophical insight, which was named the "Longchang enlightenment".

"I have given group tours thousands of times now, hosting probably 60 or 70 tours during the busiest months," Zhang says.
