Alcatraz Night Tour Face Value = $56.30 Adults, $55.10 Juniors (12-17), $52.25 Seniors (62+), $33.00 Kids (5-11), Free (0-4).

This fun fact-filled tour starts where SF's Italian-American fishing history, DiMaggio’s Restaurant, and some iconic street performers have all come and gone. From there we go out to the backside of the Wharf to get some nice cityscape and old boat views, while learning about Scoma's - the renowned old-school Italian restaurant that's always in style.

We double back past our starting point and stop by the iconic ship's wheel sign marking the heart of the area along with the steamed crab vendors and more classic Italian seafood restaurants.

At the Musee Mecanique, we'll discover a spot with "one of the world's largest privately-owned collections of coin-operated mechanical musical instruments and antique arcade artifacts." We stop long enough for you to play a game or two, so that you'll want to come back later!

We'll make another slight detour to scope out the historic Pampanito WWII submarine.

Then we take a zig zag to let you see and smell the original and world-famous San Francisco sourdough. If you want to pick up a loaf, we'll ask that you only do so if the store is not too crowded (which it often is). Or simply plan on coming back!

We'll pass the Historical Pier 43 Ferry Arch.

At the outer edge of Pier 39, we make another multi-sensory detour -- to see, hear, and smell! the California sea lions.

As "the premiere entertainment destination" at the Wharf, Pier 39 has all kinds of restaurants, shops, and family attractions - including a carousel, street performer shows, a mirror maze and a lot more...

The tour ends here -- unless you are going to Alcatraz as part of a tour package. For such guests, the tour ends another 5 minutes down the way -- at Pier 33. On time and in the right place for you to take the ferry out to Alcatraz.

Alcatraz History

Alcatraz and history go hand in hand

Once home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to “The Rock”. The presence of infamous inmates, like Al “Scarface” Capone and the “Birdman” Robert Stroud, helped to establish the Island’s notoriety. Yet, many people are unaware of the historical significance before and after it was one of the world’s most legendary prisons.

The 20th Century

Civil War-era buildings, cannons, and subterranean rooms give insight into the 19th century when the Island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. As you dock at Alcatraz Island, visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation, which began in 1969 and ended in 1971, remains etched on “The Rock”, recognizing an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.

Customer Reviews

  • If you only have 1-day to visit San Francisco take this tour! "Our cruise had 1-day in San Francisco and this was really the best way to see it all. In the morning we covered some of the best-known San Francisco neighborhoods, along with tons of photo stops along the way. Our guide had plenty of fun stories and history along the route, which dropped us right back in Fisherman’s Wharf. My family grabbed a quick lunch and enjoyed Pier 39’s sea lions before our afternoon Alcatraz Tour. My kids loved the Alcatraz ferry and the audio tour; I loved the fact that I didn’t have to worry about any of the logistics - Thank you Dylan’s!” Kate S.
  • The most amazing 1-Day tour package, beautiful scenery, perfectly organized! "Everything was exactly as advertised. Our bus was waiting, on time and ready to go. Our tour guide was absolutely awesome. Tons of photo ops. You get to see a lot of the key points in the city, like the bridge, Haight-Ashbury, Little Italy, etc., so much history. After enjoying lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf we explored Lombard Street by foot (as our guide told us the best way to see it), before heading to Alcatraz. No line-ups, no hassle and tickets were ready for us when we arrived. Worth every penny! Total class act!” Moe T.
  • Comprehensive and interesting, 5 Stars "We chose this tour because we only had 1 day in San Francisco as part of a honeymoon tour of the USA. It was perfect, great weather, and our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable and made the whole tour very casual. Lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf was excellent per the recommendation of our guide. Alcatraz was also highly enjoyable. Overall a wonderful way to get a feel for the Bay Area and know where to come back to. We also took plenty of memorable photos!” Andrea T.

How We're Different

We are not a big bus company! It’s very common to see large hop-on, hop-off buses around San Francisco, but we take a much more personal approach. Our guides not only have intimate knowledge and unmatched enthusiasm for the Bay City, but we also use specialized minibuses which are built specifically for city tours. We can literally take you where the big buses can’t go.

Our minibuses have large windows for full view of the city as we conduct the tour and are climate controlled with plenty of room for everyone. We stop several times and provide many photo opportunities.

Alcatraz Boat Tour

There are two very different ways to visit Alcatraz via ferry tours from two different companies, and each trip is both fun and informative:

1.   Take an Alcatraz boat tour cruise around the island without leaving the boat , with a recorded audio program explaining in detail all the features you can see from the water (the subject of this page).  This lets you see parts of the island and prison you can’t readily see from land.

Insiders Tip:  During the summer there is also a new 2-hour Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge narrated tour that sails once a day from Tiburon . We have more information in the next section below.

. 2.   Take a ferry to the island, disembark and walk around the gardens and go inside the old prison.   This option puts you on the island and (if you wish) inside the abandoned prison. Reaching the top level of the island complex requires either a steep walk up the hill (it’s the height of a 13-story building) or a tram ride.   ( Click here for our page about buying tickets for this trip . )   This ferry trip to the island takes 15 minutes in each direction and is the best choice for those who might get seasick easily on a longer trip, even in the more sheltered waters of the Bay (like one of our editors!).

If going inside the old prison sounds like fun, the walk around the island option is best for you, and you can click here to read about it . If you like seeing the rugged island and the exterior views of the prison that can’t be seen when you’re walkiing around on land, the extended cruise will be better and the information on this page will be useful.

Insiders Tip:  There are a number of companies that offer different tours of San Francisco Bay with different routes and durations whose boats sail past Alcatraz as part of the trip. They do not have the same extended visit time and dramatic narration of the history of the prison as the tours described below, but are a good choice for getting to see a variety of locations around the Bay.  If you’re not focused on Alcatraz alone they may be a better bet.

Insiders Tip:  Both of the Sausalito ferries cruise past Alcatraz as they travel between Sausalito and San Francisco, although they do not stop there.  This is another option for seeing Alcatraz from the water if you also want to visit Sausalito for lunch .

The New Alcatraz Boat Tour with the Golden Gate Bridge

I mentioned above that there are tours of San Francisco Bay that cruise past Alcatraz as they show you many landmarks in the Bay Area. There is also a dedicated Alcatraz boat tour (described in detail below) that focuses on just one landmark.

There is a compromise choice: a combined 2-hour Alcatraz boat tour and Golden Gate Bridge tour that goes beneath the Bridge. This  narrated tour that gives you a close-up view of our two most famous landmarks on San Francisco Bay. This tour is available only during the summer, but those are the months when the Alcatraz park visit tickets are sold out long in advance.

The tour departs from Tiburon in Marin County (from the Angel Island Ferry pier ), and there is just one sailing each day at 2:30 PM. It’s offered from June 17 through September 30, Their website and link to buy tickets is here .

The Narrated Alcatraz Tour

Blue and Gold Fleet (which also operates some of the Sausalito ferries  and Tiburon ferries ) offers a 90-minute Alcatraz boat tour from their San Francisco headquarters at Pier 41 / Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf . They call it “Escape from the Rock” and it goes around the island twice as well as going under the Golden Gate Bridge and back.

The tour takes 90 minutes and they have a recorded narration thst covers the history of the island and prison in a dramatic “History Channel style” audio program called “Escape from the Rock.”

Ticket prices for the Escape from the Rock tour are:

To buy tickets online for “Escape from the Rock” from Blue and Gold Fleet, click here.

Insiders Tip: Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf has a big but expensive parking garage, and Blue and Gold Fleet does not validate parking.  But the high-end restaurants at Pier 39 do validate, so if you have a meal (also expensive) here along with your Alcatraz cruise you’ll at least get a break on your parking!

We have more information about parking in the area here .

Alcatraz Tour Schedule (Cruise Around Island)

The page with the updated schedules for this cruise is located here.

On the satellite image below you can see Alcatraz and a tour boat at the left that is about to go by the island.  If you zoom in you’ll see the dock, which is at the right (eastern) edge of Alcatraz in this image.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
