The legacy of atlanta’s historically black colleges & universities.

The progression from the Civil War through Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement is reflected in the high standards of education established by the historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) of Atlanta, Georgia. The past, present and future of these illustrious institutions are sources of pride for Atlantans, students and alumni.

The  Atlanta University Center  (AUC) is a consortium of four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)—Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. Morris Brown College and the Interdenominational Theological Center are no longer members of the Consortium but are widely recognized for their role in the AUC’s rich legacy. The Consortium allows students to cross-register for a broader collegiate experience.

These institutions of higher education were pioneers in offering education opportunities to Black Americans, and a progressive force in the development of Atlanta’s Black community. They played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement. Graduates have gone on to be pioneers in their fields, across all disciplines, and leaders at every level.

Clark Atlanta University

Clark Atlanta University is the first HBCU in the Southern United States, and the largest in the Atlanta University Center Consortium. It was created in 1988 with the consolidation of two prestigious HBCUs—Clark College, founded in 1869, and Atlanta University, founded in 1865. Both were cornerstones in the Civil Rights movement, and it was there that the first black student legally challenged segregation in higher education in the Deep South.

Graduates have gone on to be pioneers in their fields and their accomplishments include many “firsts.” Some of these have included the first Black graduates of West Point and the University of Georgia, the first Black professor at New York University, first Black woman admitted to the Georgia Bar, first Black person elected to the South Carolina Senate after Reconstruction, the first Black women elected to the Georgia General Assembly and the New Jersey state legislature, and the first Black director of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Clark Atlanta continues to mold future generations of Black leaders across the disciplines.

Morehouse College

Bold, inspiring, men of service. Morehouse College has been shaping spiritually-disciplined creative thinkers and world-changing leaders since its founding, two years after the end of the Civil War. The world’s only HBCU for men, Morehouse is ranked the leading producer of Black men who receive doctorates in education, the spectrum of sciences, the humanities and the arts. It has produced four Rhodes Scholars, college presidents, and leaders spanning many fields. It is the alma mater of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and many other distinguished Black leaders. Other notable alumni include Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., Atlanta’s first Black mayor; social activist Julian Bond and actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Morehouse is committed to training the next generation of ethical, compassionate leaders who will go on to change their communities, the nation and the world. Students are attracted to what it means to be a Morehouse man: a brotherhood of educated Black men committed to truth, morality and justice, who want to have a significant impact on American society.

Morehouse School of Medicine

Originally part of Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine became independent in 1981 and is the first medical school established at an HBCU in the 20th century.

Unlike Morehouse College, the Medical School is co-ed. Its mission is to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities, with an emphasis on people of color and the underserved populations in Georgia and across the world, and to increase the diversity of the health and research professional workforce. MSM alumni have gone on to serve in high-ranking positions such as Surgeon General.

Spelman College

Spelman College

Spelman College has been molding young female minds into successful, educated, free-thinking women since its founding in 1881. It has built a reputation as the leading educator of Black women who go on to earn doctoral degrees in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Students are attracted to the school’s legacy of developing strong, Black women leaders. Individuality is valued at Spelman, and students have a strong sense of social justice. Notable alumni include former surgeon general Audrey F. Manley; Maj. Gen. Marcelite J. Harris, who was the first Black female general in the Air Force; and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Marian Wright Edelman. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker, who wrote “The Color Purple,” Bernice King, Pearl Cleage, Rosalind G. Brewer, Stacey Abrams, Shaun Robinson and Keshia Knight Pulliam also attended Spelman College.

The college ranks in the top 50 four-year colleges and universities for Fulbright and Gilman Scholars, and second in graduates who attend medical school. It is one of the most selective women’s colleges in the country and has the highest graduation rate of all HBCUs.

Spelman played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement, with its students participating in sit-ins and protests throughout the 1960s. It is also home to the only museum in the country that focuses on art by and about women of the African diaspora.

Students enjoy a close camaraderie with the other HBCUs nearby, including a joint homecoming with Morehouse that is the highlight of the year. Prospective students can look forward to a challenging academic environment, commitment to service and community, and a welcoming atmosphere of sisterhood.

One by one, several of the main characters of what many consider the best representation of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in television history made their way into the Marcus Bar & Grille on Wednesday night.

Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown and Glynn Turman were at the Old Fourth Ward restaurant for a tip-off dinner for a national HBCU tour in honor of the impact that iconic NBC television series, A Different World, had on generations of Black youth.

For many people, Black or not, A Different World  and the fictional Hillman College was their first look at an HBCU campus, and most importantly, the culture, sound, and feel of an HBCU.

The first stop on the  A Different World HBCU College Tour , which is presented by  Cisco  and sponsored by  Wells Fargo , is in Atlanta and begins tonight in the Atlanta University Center. The cast will meet with students, faculty and guests from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. The 10-stop tour will then move on to the nation’s capital at Howard University, and to Alabama at both Alabama State University and Tuskegee University in April. The remainder of the tour stops and dates will be announced at a later date, according to the tour’s I nstagram page  and  website .

The first episode of the show, which was created by Bill Cosby and producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen, aired on Sept. 24, 1987. Asked what the show’s legacy, impact on HBCUs, and this tour mean to him and the rest of the cast, Bell, who played Ron Johnson on the show, said it meant a lot.

“It means everything to us. We’ve spent the better part of 35 years as the preeminent representation for HBCUs in film and television,” Bell said. “The number of engineers, lawyers, doctors, HBCU presidents that have come up to us and said, ‘I am who I am today because I went to an HBCU and watched A Different World . It’s what matters.”

The cast and the show remain synonymous with HBCUs decades after airing its final episode on July 9, 1993. Bell acknowledged that impact and seemingly timeless connection with people that weren’t even born when the show came on the air or went off the air.

“For us to have the opportunity to carry that message to the next generation, it’s a blessing,” said Bell. “We want to get to as many schools as we can. That’s why we all do it.”

After the Civil War, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were created to meet the educational needs of Black students who previously had negligible opportunities to attend college. The unprecedented social, educational and economic upheaval since March 2020 has wreaked havoc on enrollment at many schools.

Our Mission is to Increase Enrollment at HBCUs and Provide Job Opportunities. HBCUs offer medical, doctoral, master, bachelor and associate degree programs. HBCUs have played a critical role ensuring that African American students and others receive a quality education.

ATLANTA — Get ready because class is about to be back in session for a group of friends from Hillman College.

Members from the cast of the hit 80s series “A Different World” are reuniting for a tour at historically Black colleges and universities “to make history on campuses that shaped the narrative of HBCU experiences.”

The “A Different World Tour” will kick off on Thursday at the Atlanta University Center which encompasses Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College.

Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman  and Sinbad are all expected for the tour that will feature panels and other events, People Magazine reported.

Producers Debbie Allen and Susan Fales are also expected to the part of the tour.

“We’re on a quest to raise awareness and enrollment for HBCUs nationwide. By leveraging the star power and cultural impact of A Different World, we aim to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes,” the tour’s website said.

So far, tour dates include Atlanta, Washington, DC and Montgomery, but more are expected to be added.

“A Different World” was a spinoff of “The Cosby Show,” that started in 1987 and ran for six seasons.

The series was centered around Denise Huxtable and her friends at the fictional Virginia HBCU, Hillman College.

Lisa Bonet, who played Denise Huxtable, left after the first season but the show continued for another five years.

“Future stars who appeared on the sitcom included Jada Pinkett Smith and Karen Malina White, among others,” People Magazine reported. “The show was consistently ranked first or second among Black viewers during most of its run, and is often cited as the defining reason as to why many decided to attend an HBCU.”

“Your participation in this tour helps raise scholarship funds, ensuring that more students can access the transformative experience of HBCUs,” the tour’s website said. “We’re not just telling a story; we’re rewriting the narrative.”

Planning Your HBCU College Tour

If you are planning on visiting HBCUs, there are a few things you need to consider before embarking on your journey. In this section, we will provide you with some tips on planning your HBCU campus tour, including understanding HBCUs, selecting colleges to visit, and tour scheduling and costs.

Understanding HBCUs

Before planning your HBCU college tour, it is important to understand what HBCUs are. These institutions were founded prior to 1964 with the intention of serving the African American community. HBCUs offer a unique experience for students who want to learn about African American culture and history while pursuing their academic goals.

Selecting Colleges to Visit

When selecting colleges to visit, it is important to consider your academic interests, location, and campus culture. You can start by researching HBCUs online and creating a list of colleges that interest you. You can also reach out to college admissions offices for more information on their programs and campus culture. It is important to select colleges that align with your academic interests and career goals.

Tour Scheduling and Costs

Once you have selected the colleges you want to visit, it is important to schedule your tour in advance. Some colleges offer scheduled tours, while others require you to schedule your tour in advance. You can also use tour companies that specialize in HBCU college tours. These companies offer tour packages that include transportation, lodging, and meals.

When scheduling your tour, it is important to consider the costs involved. You will need to budget for transportation, lodging, meals, and any other expenses that may arise. Some colleges offer nonrefundable installment tickets, which allow you to pay for your tour in installments. You can also apply for HBCU scholarships or financial aid to help cover the costs of your tour.

In summary, planning your HBCU college tour requires careful consideration of your academic interests, location, and campus culture. You can research HBCUs online, reach out to college admissions offices, and use tour companies to help plan your tour. It is important to schedule your tour in advance and budget for the costs involved. With proper planning, you can have a successful HBCU college tour experience.

Maximizing the Tour Experience

When it comes to HBCU college tours, it's important to make the most out of your experience. Here are some tips to help you maximize your tour experience.

Rev. West advises students to “treat each day of our tour like the first day of school.” He encourages stepping out of comfort zones and engaging with new people, making each tour a unique learning experience. With a non-stop itinerary, students are immersed in a college-prep atmosphere from day one. They have the opportunity to explore different campuses, attend admissions presentations, and participate in workshops and activities.

Preparing for the Tour

Before embarking on an HBCU college tour, it's important to do your research. Research the schools you'll be visiting and take note of the programs, requirements, and tuition fees. You can also reach out to the admissions office to schedule a meeting with an admissions counselor or to request additional information. Furthermore, you should pack appropriately for the trip. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and a notebook to take notes.

If you're a high school student, you may want to consider joining a program like the Black College and University Tour or the Young Scholars Program. These programs offer organized tours of multiple HBCUs and provide opportunities to meet with admissions counselors, current students, and alumni.

Engagement During the Tour

During the HBCU college tour, it's important to engage with the tour guide and ask questions. Take note of the facilities, programs, and services offered by the school. Also, pay attention to the campus culture and student life. You can ask questions about the student organizations, sports teams, and other extracurricular activities.

It's also a good idea to connect with current students and alumni during the tour. Ask them about their experiences and what they like about the school. You can also ask for advice on applying to the school and how to succeed once you're enrolled.

Post-Tour Actions

After the HBCU college tour, take some time to reflect on your experience. Review your notes and think about which schools you liked the most. Research these schools further and consider applying. You can also reach out to the admissions office with any additional questions you may have.

In conclusion, HBCU college tours offer a gateway to not just academic opportunities but also a deeper understanding of African American culture and history. As Rev. West from 32nd Street Theater says, “It's about pursuing happiness and broadening horizons.” Start your journey today and embrace the rich legacy of HBCUs.

Although HBCUs were initially established to provide education for black students, they now accept all students, regardless of race or ethnicity. They offer them the chance to advance their skills and abilities.

HBCU Making Moves Tour

Our HBCU Making Moves Tour focuses on exposure to the rich legacy of the HBCUs and the unlimited opportunities an HBCU college education provides.

Our History

It all started in 1987, when Carl Ray put four boys on a plane, flew them into Atlanta, rented a van and took them to Tuskegee’s Homecoming. Since that one trip, over 5500 high school and community college students have attended the tours. Helping Carl on these tours always were his trusted friends Reginald Braddock, Brenda Long and John Wright, all four Tuskegee Institute Graduates. Sadly, Carl passed away in 2015. Today, Reggie, Brenda and myself continue where Carl left off. We have never stopped. We continue the work, the commitment, the duty, and the responsibility of the Tours because of the impact that it has upon the kids. We have had students (especially our young men) that have never dreamed of going to college, end up going to college, graduate and become very, very successful.

What Is Our HBCU Making Moves Tour About

Our HBCU Making Moves Tour focuses on exposing your child to the unlimited opportunities afforded them through a college education. The accomplishments range from (but are not limited to) the richness of cultures, histories, traditions, legacies, heritage, and pride. The student has a chance to meet and talk with Professors and student body who will support their endeavors to be successful.

Along with visits to numerous HBCU campuses, there are many cultural and historical sites that will be visited pertaining to African American Culture.

When your child returns from the Making Moves Tour, it is hoped that they will have gained a sense of pride in themselves inspiring them to greater strives.  Making Moves is there for a continuance of lifeline support, guidance, and mentoring as your child will continue to be shadowed throughout high school and college graduation.

What makes us different than all other tours

It’s your History, Culture, Heritage, and your Legacy. It’s a school that was built just for you, a school where the President, Professors and student body looks just like you. It is where you will be nurtured and challenged to grow to your fullest potential.

It is a place where you are valued, respected and loved. It is a place where you will learn about yourself and learn to love yourself for who you are. It is a place where you can see so many wonderful Black Women and Men doing so many amazing things. It’s a Sisterhood, a Brotherhood.

HBCU All-Stars Announce Its First International Tour To Paris With The All-Star Game's Alumni

Kyle t. mosley | jun 6, 2024.

HBCU ALL-STARS INTERNATIONAL TOUR | 2024

  • Grambling State Tigers
  • Texas Southern Tigers
  • Tennessee State Tigers
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions
  • Howard Bison
  • Jackson State Tigers

Travis Williams continues to break new ground for HBCU basketball. Ten HBCU All-Stars alumni will embark on introducing HBCUs to an international audience with the first-ever HBCU All-Stars International Tour to Paris, France. The excursion begins Wednesday, June 19, to June 26, as several of the nation’s top HBCU All-Stars will participate.

“This is one of the most important and rare moments in history where we get a once in a lifetime opportunity and global platform during the Olympic year in Paris to represent our esteemed HBCUs, four premier Black College conferences, the Best in Black College Basketball, and the United States of America in a part of the world where HBCUs and the HBCU culture do not exist,” Travis L. Williams, Founder and CEO, HBCU All Stars LLC said.

Alums from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 HBCU All-Star Games in New Orleans, Houston, and Phoenix will be partake in the Quai 54 World Streetball Championship at the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin Stadium. Celebrities and even NBA stars will travel overseas to enjoy the annual basketball tournament, which sold out in less than two hours.

HBCU ALL-STARS INTERNATIONAL TOUR | 2024

“This is history in the making to host the first-ever HBCU All-Stars International Tour in Paris, one month before the 2024 Summer Olympics take place. The very deserving 10 players that have been selected from our 2022, 2023, and 2024 HBCU All-Star Games are playing professionally now in the NBA G-League, internationally overseas, and doing well in pursuing their goals, dreams, and aspirations of playing at the highest level in the NBA. They are truly excited to represent the HBCU All-Stars Basketball Movement, and the best in college basketball from our country’s most esteemed Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The legendary former HBCU coach Cy Alexander will serve as the Head Coach, bringing a wealth of valuable experience, knowledge, expertise, and respect.

“Since October 2019, I have been working extremely hard through my sports marketing, events, and media company, HBCU All-Stars, LLC, to provide these amazing national and global opportunities for our proud and prestigious HBCUs, deserving student-athletes, and brilliant coaches across the country. This God-driven vision will provide exposure, access, recognition, and opportunities on a global platform in Paris against some of the top international teams competing in this event and in the friendly exhibition games. There were many outstanding players very deserving of this great honor and opportunity to play at the highest level and on the biggest international stage in Paris.

HBCU ALL-STARS - 2023

“As always, I am just being obedient to this God-driven vision that was founded in 2019, and it has been a long journey and dream come true to get to this point in year three, especially after a very successful, sold-out HBCU All-Star Game in Phoenix during Final Four Weekend at Grand Canyon University.

We will continue honoring and celebrating the rich history, tradition, and contributions of HBCUs to the sport of college basketball. Now, we are taking the movement internationally to show the world that HBCUs have just as much talent, skills, knowledge, and abilities when provided with the same national and global spotlight. All we need is the same access, opportunities, exposure, and recognition,” said Williams.

With a mission to advocate, educate, expose, mentor, and invest in HBCU students, student-athletes, and coaches across the country, the event aims to showcase the “Best in Black College Basketball.”

Launched by HBCU All-Stars LLC, a Black-owned sports marketing, events, and media company in Atlanta, the HBCU All-Star Game brings much-needed E.A.R. (Exposure, Access, Recognition) and O.R.R. (Opportunities, Resources, Results) while celebrating Black excellence, Black history, and Black cultural experiences at the highest level.

Grambling State, Donte' Jackson HBCU coach NCAA Tournament

NCAA tournament win nets contract extension for HBCU coach

Donte’ Jackson continues to rack up wins at Grambling

' src=

It wasn’t a requirement but winning a NCAA Tournament game solidified Grambling head coach Donte’ Jackson as a hot commodity in college basketball. On Friday morning Grambling ensured that Jackson would hang around the HBCU ranks for a few more seasons, awarding him with a contract extension through the 2029 season.

“Coach Jackson is without a doubt one of the best basketball coaches in the country and we are blessed that he’s the leader of our men’s basketball program,” said Dr. Trayvean D. Scott, Grambling’s Athletic Director. “He has taken our program to heights that haven’t been seen for decades and we are confident that he will continue to be successful and mold our student-athletes into men who represent our institution the right way.”

Since coming to Grambling in 2017 Jackson has proven to be a consistent winner at the helm for the Tigers. He’s won three SWAC regular season titles during that time frame as well as three SWAC Coach of the Year awards. Last season was a real shining star for Grambling, winning its first ever SWAC tournament title. Jackson then won his first NCAA tournament game, beating Montana State 88-81 in the First Four. Grambling won then lose in the opening round after taking on No. 1 seed Purdue.

In April of 2023 Grambling extended Jackson’s contract to run through 2028 with a then four year extension.

Moving up the leaderboard

Even though Jackson has only been at Grambling for seven years, he’s already second on the all-time wins list. Jackson has picked up 120 wins at Grambling, only just the second coach in school history to past the century mark. He trails the legendary Fredrick C. Hobdy in all time wins at the school.   Jackson has twice been named the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year. During the 2022-23 season, he guided GSU to 24 wins – its most wins in a single season since joining Division I in 1977.

Donte’ Jackson was no stranger to HBCU basketball before arriving at Grambling. Prior to GSU, Jackson spent three seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. During his time there, he went 66-21 overall and won the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, where they defeated West Georgia in the first round.
