2023 Nitto ATP Finals: Players, Predictions

The 2023 ATP Final features two groups who will play in a round-robin format: the Green Group consists of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Holger Rune. The Red Group features Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Zverev. The top two finishers in each group advance to the semifinals in a knock-out stage. The two winners of the semifinals will then meet in the final.

Djokovic is the defending champion, having defeated Casper Ruud in the finals of the 2022 event. He has his sights on finishing as the ATP Year-End No. 1 for the record-extending eighth time. The Serbian is the current World No. 1, though he’ll face stiff competition from the number two-ranked Alcarez , who famously defeated Novak at Wimbledon this year.

Yesterday's matches saw Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz go head to head but Djokovic prevailed, dominating the semi-final. The 2023 Nitto ATP Finals ready for action at Pala Alpitour Stadium. The main attraction? Novak Djokovic, of course. The defending champion and the winner of this year's French, Australian and U.S. Opens will be in pursuit of a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title, surpassing Roger Federer's six.

Djoko's biggest challenger will be none other than Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old, who beat Djokovic in one of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever seen earlier this year, makes his ATP Finals debut.

Other contenders include Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev who have both won nine titles between them this season, but have been overshadowed by the brilliance of Djokovic and Alcaraz in recent times.

When the action gets underway in Italy, all eyes will be on Djokovic who enters the tournament on an 18-match winning streak that dates back to his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz. Since that loss, the Serbian has won the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open and most recently the Paris Masters .

The world number one will now be looking to eclipse Roger Federer and win the ATP Finals title for the seventh time, but he will face stiff competition from the likes of Alcaraz, as well as previous winners of the tournament in Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Andrey Rublev will also be making his fourth straight appearance at the event, while Holger Rune secured his spot after reaching the quarter-finals in Paris. Completing the field is home favorite Jannik Sinner who won his first Masters 1000 title this year at the Canadian Open.

These eight players will not only battle it out for the title but for a share of the record $15 million in prize money. In fact, if one player manages to win every game at this year’s tournament then they will earn more than $4.8 million, the largest prize money for an individual player in the history of tennis.

It should be a hugely entertaining tournament and one you won’t want to miss. So here’s how you can live stream ATP Finals 2023 tennis from wherever you are in the world.

When Jannik Sinner downed Novak Djokovic in a three-set epic five days ago, he may have been tempted to believe that his toughest test was out of the way early. Instead, the home favorite and the six-time champion will face off in the 2023 ATP Finals final today, with both players on the verge of making history.

You can watch the 2023 ATP Finals final on the Tennis Channel in the US, Prime Video in the UK, and beIN Sports in Australia. Don't worry if you're abroad right now, because you can watch ATP Finals live streams from anywhere with a VPN .

If Sinner was to lift the trophy, he'd become the first ever Italian to win this 54-year-old tournament, a fact that sure isn't lost on the Turin crowd, not least those Carota Boys. Djokovic, on the other hand, is tied with Roger Federer as the most successful player in ATP Finals history, and you can only imagine how much it would mean to the Serb to take the outright record.

The world No.1 leads their head-to-head 3-1, but since their clash at Wimbledon in the summer, Sinner has elevated his game, to the extent that he's currently on an eight-match winning streak against opponents ranked in the top 10.

The 22-year-old has exhibited elite mental fortitude too, during his victories over Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev in particular, though the way Nole swatted aside Carlos Alcaraz yesterday served as a reminder of the 36-year-old's big-match prowess.

Live streaming, ATP Finals 2023: Novak Djokovic looks to surpass Roger Federer - where to watch, format

Both Djokovic and Federer are tied on six ATP Finals titles each. India’s Rohan Bopanna will compete in the doubles event in Turin. Watch live!

Novak Djokovic

The ATP Finals 2023 will see the best in the world, including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz , compete in Turin, Italy from November 12 to 19.

The season-ending men’s tennis championship features two separate tournaments - one for singles and one for doubles. Only the top eight-ranked singles players or doubles teams from the year qualify to play in the ATP Finals - which is often considered the biggest men’s tennis event on the ATP Tour after the four Grand Slams.

Reigning singles champion Novak Djokovic and last year’s doubles winners, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, will be defending their respective titles in Turin. The ATP Finals will be live streamed and telecast in India.

Novak Djokovic is chasing his seventh ATP Finals title, which will take him past Roger Federer as the most successful player in the competition’s history. The Serb is the top seed heading into Turin.

Looking to spoil Djokovic’s party will be Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who will be making his ATP Finals debut in Turin. Alcaraz, the world No. 2 in the ATP singles tennis rankings behind Djokovic, has been drawn in the other group and faces a possible run-in with the Serbian veteran in the semi-finals or final.

The format for the ATP Finals divides the players/pairs into two groups - Red and Green. Each player/pair in a group play the others in a round-robin format and the top two from each group after all the matches are over make the semi-finals.

Rohan Bopanna in doubles draw at ATP Finals 2023

The doubles draw sees Serbia’s Ivan Dodig and the USA’s Austin Krajicek, the top seeds, drawn in the Green Group. Reigning champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are in the Red Group alongside India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden, who are seeded third for the tournament.

This will be l Bopanna’s fourth appearance at the ATP Finals after 2011, 2012 and 2015. The Indian tennis player made the finals in 2012 and 2015, first with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and then with Romania’s Florin Mergea, but lost on both occasions. No Indian has won the ATP Finals title to date.

Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic: French Open

French Open 2024: Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek feature among the players to watch at Roland Garros.

The second Grand Slam of the year is almost here, but who has been impressing on clay?

Often referred to as 'terre battue' - literally 'beaten earth' - the art of playing on the slippery crushed red brick courts in Paris can be a challenge in a season book-ended by hard courts, until we get the spring and summer.

So who are the contenders for the men's and women's singles title at Roland Garros? We take a closer look...

Novak Djokovic

Serbia's Novak Djokovic points at 23 on his garment as he celebrates winning the men's singles final match of the French Open tennis tournament against Norway's Casper Ruud in three sets, 7-6, (7-1), 6-3, 7-5, at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, Sunday, June 11, 2023. This season is most likely the most wide-open it has been. With the sun setting on Rafael Nadal's career, with a record-extending 15th Roland Garros title potentially out of his grasp, you would think the way would be clear for Novak Djokovic to take sole ownership of the mantle of most Grand Slam titles.

Yet Djokovic has struggled to find his stride this season, as he is yet to claim a title in 2024. After being hit on the head by a spectator's bottle in Rome, he bowed out meekly in the third round, before another shock defeat in Geneva. He will now head to Paris to prepare for his title defence.

Rafael Nadal

The 14-time champion's participation remains in doubt even though he is, by his own standards at least, injury-free. Nadal has played only four tournaments this year and won only four games in his last match, against Hubert Hurkacz in Rome.

But an unseeded Nadal is a frightening prospect in the early rounds and, if he can upset fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev, the 37-year-old will start believing title number 15 is a possibility.

Sky Sports Tennis caught up with football icon Luis Figo at the Madrid Open, who hailed Rafael Nadal's career.

Casper Ruud

Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud

Reaching two finals back-to-back and splitting the honours with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Ruud looked to be the man in form on the clay, but after backing up the Monte Carlo Masters final with the title in Barcelona, the Norwegian went out in the round of 16 in Madrid, and in his second-round opener in Rome.

Ruud is a two-time Roland Garros finalist but came up against both Nadal and Djokovic at the peak of their powers - but if he can put the disappointment of his performances at the Madrid and Rome double-headers, he could capitalise on a potential changing of the guard.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas has flirted with Slam glory, having had Djokovic on the ropes in the 2021 Roland Garros final, leading the Serbian by two sets, before Djokovic fought back to deny the Greek his first Slam title.

Like Ruud, a solid early start to the clay court season ended in an opening defeat in Madrid and his Rome campaign ended in the quarter-finals.

Carlos Alcaraz

Organisers of Roland Garros will be breathing a sigh of relief, having seen Alcaraz and reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner both withdraw from Rome. While Sinner might still be doubtful for Paris, Alcaraz could be gearing up to stake his claim on a third Grand Slam title.

The Spaniard will be under-cooked though, having only played one tournament, Madrid, in the lead-up to the French Open.

Jannik Sinner has also struggled with injuries in the build-up, so the men's draw could be thrown wide open this year.

Jack Draper

Jack Draper beat Vit Kopriva during the first round of the Bavarian international

With Andy Murray winding down and both Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans struggling for form, Draper looks to be the pick of the British men at this year's tournament.

Now ranked 35 in the world, the 22-year-old left-hander seems to have put his injury-plagued early years behind him and is ready to take the next step from exciting prospect to genuine title contender. Roland Garros would be a good place to start.

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is a three-time French Open champion

The world No 1 already has three Coupe Suzanne Lenglen trophies to her name and will be looking to do a 'three-peat' and on her current form, who is to say she can't do it?

She has a Stuttgart semi-final and Madrid title already under her belt, and she will go head-to-head with Aryna Sabalenka in Rome, in a repeat of the Madrid final to put the finishing touches to her title defence in Paris.

Much like Swatek, when Sabalenka's form is on, she is very consistent, and despite a quarter-final exit in Stuttgart, she has made the most of Madrid and Rome's extended format to now reach two back-to-back WTA 1000 events.

She achieved her best run at Roland Garros last year, reaching the semi-finals.

Gauff

It has been a slow build-up on the clay for the reigning US Open champion, but Gauff had her first shot at Slam glory in Paris 2022, losing to Swiatek. She made good on her promise and potential at her home Slam in 2023 and closed out her Paris preparations with the Rome semi-final.

Elena Rybakina

Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina reacts after her victory against Poland's Iga Swiatek at the semi finals of the WTA Tour in Stuttgart, Germany, Saturday April 20, 2024. (Marijan Murat/dpa via AP)

Provided Rybakina can take to the court, her run to the title in Stuttgart and semi-final of Madrid would have put her firmly in as one of the favourites. But she has consistently been troubled with illness and has withdrawn from both Indian Wells and Rome as defending champion.

If she is fit enough to start in Paris, she will look to advance further than her best run to the quarter-finals in 2021.

American Collins is enjoying a remarkable end-of-career renaissance, having declared this season will be her last. The 30-year-old's run to the semi-finals in Rome - where she lost to Sabalenka - took her to 19 victories from her last 21 matches including tournament wins in Miami and Charleston.

An imminent return to the top 10 - having been ranked 63 in February - makes Collins' impending retirement all the more difficult to understand.

COLLINS HITS BACK AT CROWD 28 APRIL 24

Katie Boulter

Boulter

What a season it has been so far for Boulter, who has climbed into the top 30 on the back of a second WTA Tour title in San Diego in March. She will therefore be seeded at Roland Garros despite this being her first main draw appearance - an indication both of her rapid rise and her previous aversion to clay.

The 27-year-old is still much more at home on faster surfaces but has shown some encouraging signs on the red stuff.

Why Alexander Zverev can play French Open while facing domestic abuse charges

Follow live coverage of the first day of the French Open 2024 today

This article is part of the launch of extended tennis coverage on The Athletic , which will go beyond the baseline to bring you the biggest stories on and off the court. To follow our tennis coverage, click here .

In what looks to be one of the most wide-open Grand Slam tournaments in decades, conventional wisdom says Alexander Zverev has to be considered among the favorites for the men’s title at the French Open when the main draw begins on Sunday, May 26.

Zverev, a lanky, 6ft 6in (198cm) German, is a top clay-court player. He’s a three-time French Open semifinalist and in 2022 he was giving Rafael Nadal, the greatest clay-courter of all time, all kinds of trouble there in their final-four duel . That was before Zverev tore ankle ligaments in that match, an injury that required surgery and months of rehabilitation.

He can play with power and touch and moves easily across the surface he grew up playing on as a child.

But for Zverev, this will be a French Open unlike any other for a very different reason.

In a moment of unrivaled jeopardy for him and the sport — barring an early loss — Zverev will be competing in Paris over the coming days and weeks while a domestic abuse hearing begins in the German city of Berlin, over charges that he abused a former girlfriend during an argument in 2020.

Zverev has denied the charges, but in October the Berlin criminal court issued a penalty order, fining him €450,000 ($489,000; £384,000) in connection with the charges from Brenda Patea, a model and social media personality who is the mother of his daughter. In Germany, a prosecutor can seek a penalty order on cases it considers simple because there is compelling evidence that it should not require a trial.

atp tour finals stream

The defendant has a right to contest the order, which Zverev has done. The court has scheduled a hearing to begin on May 31 and it will continue on a series of non-consecutive dates in June and July, including some that could occur during Wimbledon, and, if it goes longer than that, the Olympics back in Paris, where Zverev will try to win a second straight gold medal.

Zverev is not required to attend the hearing and he has said he has no plans to do so. Instead, he will be competing in the most coveted tournaments in the sport while under criminal investigation.

Here is a summary of the state of play.

go-deeper

Why Alexander Zverev is allowed to play despite domestic abuse allegations

What are the charges against Alexander Zverev?

Patea has said Zverev pushed her against a wall and choked her during an argument. Patea has said she told friends about the incident but did not file a legal complaint for three years in part because of a sense of shame stemming from the incident. That changed last year when she went to the police and subsequently spoke about the incident in multiple media interviews.

Zverev has denied Patea’s allegation. He initially called it “bullsh*t”. During the Australian Open in January, he said: “Anybody that has a semi-standard IQ level knows what this is all about.” He did not expand on that thought and reached the semi-finals of that tournament in an increasingly embarrassing series of wins for the ATP Tour.

He has faced accusations of spousal abuse before.

In 2021, another ex-girlfriend, Olya Sharypova, the former Russian tennis player, accused Zverev of repeatedly abusing her in 2019 in New York , Shanghai, Monaco and Geneva while they were romantically involved. Unlike Patea, Sharypova never involved the criminal justice system in her case, casting her assault allegations in a lengthy article with online magazine Slate and on social media.

Zverev denied those allegations as well. A private investigation of those charges paid for by the ATP Tour found there was not sufficient evidence to penalize him.

go-deeper

Alexander Zverev keeps winning. But nobody wants to talk about his domestic abuse trial

Why is Zverev still allowed to play tennis?

Unlike most major sports leagues, tennis does not have a specific policy for punishing a player who is facing domestic abuse charges. The ATP Tour rulebook does allow for a provisional suspension of a player who is charged with a civil or criminal offense that is “contrary to the integrity of the Game of Tennis”, but the body has so far not used that policy in the case.

Zverev recently became a member of the tour’s Player Advisory Council. He said earlier this year he wanted to serve on the council to be a part of the ongoing discussions about the sport’s format and schedule.

The other entities that oversee men’s tennis, which include the four Grand Slam events and the International Tennis Federation, have so far followed the lead of the ATP Tour. All have chosen to let the legal process play out before deciding whether to levy any sort of punishment.

atp tour finals stream

More than a year ago, the ATP Tour hired Andrew Azzopardi, who led Malta’s national Safeguarding Commission and served as a case manager for England’s Football Association, to become its director of safeguarding. The tour has said that Azzopardi is working on a policy on spousal abuse charges, or, in Zverev’s case, a preliminary judgment from the court in Berlin.

Zverev’s legal team at German firm Schertz Bergmann has called the legal process “scandalous”.

“There can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure,” it has said.

What do tennis players think about Zverev’s case?

Most players have said little about the situation. After the initial charges from Sharypova, Andy Murray was outspoken about the need for a clear policy and an investigation. Eventually, the ATP Tour hired the Lake Forest Group, a third-party consultant, to work with its outside legal counsel, Florida-based firm Smith Hulsey & Busey, and conduct what became a 15-month investigation.

Since that investigation concluded without finding sufficient evidence to penalize Zverev, most male players have opted not to comment on the latest charges. Among the women players, both Sloane Stephens and Iga Swiatek were critical of the process earlier this year, especially the ATP Tour’s decision to give Zverev a position on the players’ advisory board.

“Would that happen on the WTA Tour?” Stephens said. “Probably not.”

Swiatek, who tries to steer clear of controversy, said, “For sure, it’s not good when a player who’s facing charges like that is kind of being promoted.”

How have the charges been portrayed in tennis media?

While Zverev and his supporters in the sport have largely stayed away from any direct discussion of the preliminary judgment and the legal proceedings, he has otherwise tried to portray himself as a glamorous globetrotting tennis player, just like any other. The ATP Tour has cooperated with this effort.

The tour partnered with Netflix and Box To Box Films on Break Point, a docuseries/tennis commercial in the spirit of the wildly popular Drive To Survive about Formula 1 motor racing. An episode in the second season of the now-canceled series focused almost entirely on Zverev and his admirable comeback from the ligament surgery mentioned above. It even went so far as to portray him as the white knight in his rivalry with Daniil Medvedev, who was portrayed as an on-court villain and practitioner of the dark arts of tennis chaos.

The episode did not include a single mention of the spousal abuse charges. In addition to the on-court action, it showed Zverev padding around his Monte Carlo apartment with his current girlfriend and hobnobbing at a party with executives of Richard Mille, a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer.

Social media widely panned the episode and when Netflix canceled Break Point after two seasons , critics pointed to its sanitized treatment of a controversial personality as an example of one of the reasons the show failed to cultivate a large and broad audience.

go-deeper

Netflix and tennis: Why did Break Point fail?

If he is found guilty, what might that mean for Zverev?

Penalties for domestic abuse in Germany range from a fine to a prison sentence; though if Zverev were to be found guilty, it’s unlikely that, as a first-time offender, he would serve time.

The other question is whether tennis would suspend or fine him. A suspension could be costly.

Already this year he has collected more than $3million in prize money. Tennis players don’t earn salaries. If they don’t play, they don’t get paid.

Also, Zverev has significant sponsorship deals with Adidas and Head, his clothing and racket sponsors. A guilty verdict would leave them with a decision to make about whether to retain him as an ambassador.
