Transit tour in Bahrain- My best experience

After contacting many agencies in Bahrain, Ishtar Gate tours was the only agency answered our request promptly- many faked accounts sell tours online, so please be careful of them as they are working illegally.

The guide of Ishtar Gate tours was so informative with a very professional approach and was so polite with us, the car used was land cruiser which gave an extra value for the tour, very safe and high quality service.

Highly recommended.

Best tour in Bahrain

Highly recommended tour operator-luxury vehicle, professional tourist guide were used.

We sent a request to few agencies, but Ishtar gate proposal was the best - I liked when they mentioned in the proposal ; Safety & Quality comes first.

As a family, we felt very safe and comfortable during the tour ; the guide explained everything in detail with an excellent English speaking skills.

Highly recommend services in Bahrain.

He arrived at exactly the time he said, sent us a pic so we would recognize him, and had a nice car to drive us around the city. He was worth every penny and probably should be charging more. His English is perfect. He is a retired educator and shows in his passion to teach. He helped us practice our Arabic on him and even helped us negotiate good prices in the market when we asked him to help us find a few things we wanted. 12 Unique Things to Do in Bahrain on a Cruise Stop or Layover

Things to do in Bahrain

For such a tiny nation, Bahrain packs a lot in. From getting lost in its souq to visiting a centries old fort, there’s no shortage of interesting things to see and do. After spending a full 24-hours touring the country tip-to-tip I have complied some of my favourite highlights. Since I was visiting during Ramadan, this list also includes some sights and attractions that will bring me back for another visit.

With that in mind, here are 12 unique things to do in Bahrain on a long layover, weekend visit, or cruise stop.

Table of Contents

Stroll The Avenues

bahrain layover tour

Like other Gulf nations, Baharain has taken to reclaiming land from the sea. Unlike other Gulf nations, Bahrain has done so more out of need rather than say building the world map out of islands like the abandoned outside of Dubai . Bahrain’s natural borders are just 257 square miles. Through expansion, the tiny country has added a whopping 122 square miles, almost doubling in size . There are ambitious plans to further expand however currently as is, Bahrain is in the top five countries that have reclaimed land from the sea .

bahrain layover tour

Much of this reclaimed land is on the north shore around the capital of Manama. This is best experienced by strolling the Avenues Park, a nice walkway along the water. There you can take in some of the unique architecture including the drill bit-shaped Wyndham Grand Manama and the iconic Bahrain World Trade Center 1 . This area is also home to some of the only greenery on the desert island as well as some shopping centres and eateries.

Tour the Bahrain International Circuit

Bahrain hosts a Grand Prix every March which brings in fans from around the globe. Even if you aren’t in town for the actual race, you can still visit and tour the track . This includes a visit to the roof-top of the Sakhir Tower for 360-degree views of the course as well as the control tower where you can play with the camera systems used during the race.

Visit The Persian Gulf’s First Oil Well

bahrain layover tour

You don’t have to venture too far outside of Manama to understand where the wealth comes from. The country is rich in oil with wells dotting the interior. Interestingly, the world’s first oil well in the Arabic nations was in Bahrain in 1931. This quickly lead Bahrain to become the region’s wealthiest country and supported its neighbours. Today, this script has somewhat flipped.

You can visit this well along with a small museum dedicated to the country’s oil pumping history.

Water The Tree of Life

In a sea of sand and oil rigs, a massive tree in the middle of it all seems unlikely. Still, the Tree of Life has been defining the odds for over 430 years.

bahrain layover tour

Visitors can take in the miracle that has become known as the Tree of Life and offer it a drink. You can also wander the area around the tree and discover ruins from a settlement that once stood 500+ years ago.

bahrain layover tour

Tour Bahrain’s Largest Mosque

Bahrain’s largest mosque is the Al Fateh Grand Mosque . In between prayer and special events, visitors can take tours of the beautiful building and get an insight into Islam from a knowledgeable guide.

Visit Qal’at al-Bahrain

bahrain layover tour

Unlike neighbouring Dubai, Manama and Bahrain have more to offer than shiny tall towers and shopping malls. The Qal’at al-Bahrain , for example, dates back to 2,300 BC. Over the years, the area changed hands and functions several times. Initially a harbour town, the location was the heart of the Capital of Dilum, the area’s most important ancient civilization. In the early 1500s, the Portuguese used this spot to establish a fort in an effort to protect the lucrative trade route Bahrain had come to find itself on.

Today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing the Ancient Harbour and Capital of Dilmun.

bahrain layover tour

Be sure to visit the Qal’at Al-Bahrain Site Museum to get a full appreciation of the ruins and history of the area.

Dive for Pearls

Once known as the Island of Pearls, the water off of Bahrain’s shores are full of oysters. Divers can collect up to 60 oysters as well as whatever may be inside. This adds an extra level of excitement to this unique thing to do in Bahrain. Guided tours are offered from Manama and take half of a day at a minimum.

Explore an Underwater Amusement Park

Oysters and pearls aren’t the only things to discover in Bahrain’s water. Scuba diving is one of the most popular things to do in Bahrain thanks to the addition of an underwater amusement park . There you will find plenty of submerged structures to explore along with the sea life that now calls it home. This includes a Boeing 747, ships, and a sculpture gallery.

Drive to Sadi Arabi

The island of Bahrain is connected to the Sadi Arabi mainland by the 24 km long King Fadel Causway. It’s a vital lifeline for the country and commerce. Every day some 100,000 vehicles pass over the causeway, carrying goods and services to and from the neighbouring countries. Smack dab in the middle is a manmade island that houses the border crossing.

bahrain layover tour

Visitors to Bahrain can take a day trip to Dammam, Sadi Arabi through a guided tour , Even a drive along the causeway to the border is worth the trip for the drive. If you do decide to visit Saudi Arabia, be sure to apply for a tourist Visa at least three days in advance.

Tour Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort

bahrain layover tour

Built in 1812 as a palace for Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh and this future family, today Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort offers views of the sandstone and beige buildings across the Hunanaiya valley. Tourists can visit inside and wander the centries old fort, exploring its many rooms along the way.

Next up on this list of things to do in Bahrain is visiting its famous Manama souq . Like other Souques in the region, you can find pretty much anything here along with its knockoff replica. From spices and teas to knock of Nikes, you can find it here and at a great price. I recommend having a guide with you to make haggling that much easier.

Bahrain Airport Layover Sightseeing

Airport Overview

Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is one of the smallest airports in the region and the oldest in the Persian Gulf. Opened in 1927, it was expanded in 2021 and consists of a single-passenger terminal for domestic and international flights. However, Bahrain International Airport has a few distractions to offer to the passengers, and if your layover is fewer than 6 hours, you’d better stay at the airport. The airport will particularly delight art lovers, as it is infused with Bharani art, with sculptures and paintings exposed in the terminal. It also possesses a local market, the Souq Al Qaisariya, designed like a traditional Bahraini market and that offers local food, drinks, jewellery, and local artwork. There’s also a small museum, the Cultural Heritage Galleries. And if you’re looking for rest, several lounges will provide you with comfort and art, both at the same time. For more information on the airport, check out our Bahrain Airport Guide .

Manama Sightseeing Attractions

Below are a few of the top things to do in Manama:

Bahrain National Museum

Bahrain National Museum

The kingdom of Bahrain is a fascinating country with a rich 6000-year history, yet little known by most foreigners. Why not take advantage of your layover to learn its history and culture? The best place to do so is the Bahrain National Museum , where you can admire rich collections of architectural relics.

  • Time Required : Open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM from Saturday to Thursday, visitors usually spend two to three hours there. The entrance ticket fee is only 1.1 BHD.
  • How to Get There : Located 15 minutes from the airport, the Bahrain National Museum can be reached by taxi or bus (Line A1, Bahrain National Museum bus stop).
  • Plan Your Sightseeing : Visit  Tripadvisor to plan your sightseeing, read traveller reviews, or book a tour to the Bahrain National Museum.

Al Fateh Mosque

Al Fateh Mosque

The Al Fateh Grand Mosque is a sublime white mosque worth the detour during your layover in Bahrain. It is one of the world’s largest mosques and has an enormous fibreglass dome. The delicate architecture is a blend of traditional and modern Islamic architecture, giving you many opportunities to take stunning photos. Remember, though, that you should dress modestly to enter the mosque (clothes can be provided at the entrance). Located near the Bahrain Museum, the Al Fateh Mosque is a quick visit that can be combined with the museum.

  • Time Required : A maximum of two hours, including transportation, is enough to have plenty of time to visit the mosque. Opening times are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day except on Friday.
  • How to Get There : Located near the Bahrain National Museum, the Al Fateh Mosque is accessible with a 15-minute taxi ride or by bus (Line A1, Al Fateh Grand Mosque bus stop).
  • Plan Your Sightseeing : Visit  Tripadvisor to plan your sightseeing, read traveller reviews, or book a tour of Al Fateh Grand Mosque.

Manama Souq & Little India

Bahrain Souq

The entrance of the souq is marked with a beautiful 1949 gate, the historical building of Bab al Bahrain. Passing this national landmark, you’ll enter the bustling area of the market, a labyrinth of narrow alleys selling colourful handicrafts, spices, jewelry, etc. There are also plenty of small cafes and restaurants to taste the local cuisine. Inside the souq, visit “Little India,” an area full of Indian shops, old historic houses, and a 200-year-old Krishna Temple.

  • Time Required : Consider at least three hours, transportation included, to visit the souq. Add one or two hours more if you intend to take your time and have a meal there.
  • How to Get There : The Manama Souq is 20 minutes west of the airport. You can get there by taxi or bus (Line A1, Manama Terminal, then walk for about 10 minutes).
  • Plan Your Sightseeing : Visit  Tripadvisor to plan your sightseeing, read traveller reviews or book a tour.

MODA Mall & Bahrain Mall

The MODA Mall in the Bahrain World Trade Center hosts world-famous luxury brands and designer shops for a top-notch shopping experience. If you want to pamper yourself, you will also find many restaurants and beauty salons just a short ride from the airport. For a wow experience, you can also opt for the Bahrain Mall , the largest shopping mall in the country, home to many luxury brands and yummy food courts.

  • Time Required : The duration of your shopping escapade depends on your love for luxury brands, but don’t plan less than two hours for the MODA Mall and three hours for the Bahrain Mall.
  • How to Get There : The MODA mall is near the Bahrain National Museum, about 15 minutes from the airport by taxi. You can also get there by bus, with line A1 (Palace Avenue bus stop, then walk for about 10 minutes). The Bahrain Mall is further away, about 30 minutes from the airport, and it is best to reach it by taxi.

Bahrain Bay Beach

On an island where the sun is always shining and the water is always at a perfect temperature, what’s better than spending some time at the beach? Bahrain Bay Beach is your best option on a layover, as it’s just a few minutes from the airport. Chill on a deckchair on the pristine white sand, or have fun in some of the activities offered at the beach, such as water slides and a wave pool. Be careful, though: if you travel during the summer, it’s best to avoid being under the sun during the day, as the weather can be pretty warm (around 40 degrees with high humidity).

  • Time Required : Consider at least 3 to 4 hours to enjoy your stay at Bahrain Bay Beach.
  • How to Get There : The best option to get to Bahrain Bay Beach is to grab a taxi that will take you there in 15 minutes from the airport.

Airport Transportation

Conveniently located near Manama, Bahrain International Airport offers a few transportation options. Several air-conditioned bus lines regularly operate between the airport and the city center, while taxis and car rentals are also available for layover travellers.

Public transit options include:

  • Bus : Four public bus lines serve Bahrain International Airport from and to the city center of Manama (Line A1, A2, 10, 11), running every 20 minutes from to. Departure is located outside the Arrivals Hall, on gates 3 and 4. For fares, routes and schedule: Bahrain Public Transport Company Website .

Private transit options include:

  • Taxi : Taxis are located outside the Arrivals Hall, in the Car Park B area. You can reach Manama city center in 20 minutes by taxi, any time of the day or night, for about 8 BHD.
  • Limousine Service : Bahrain International Airport also offers limousine services operated by Hala Bahrain. For prices and reservations: Hala Bahrain Website .
  • Car Rentals : Several car rental companies are located on the ground floor, in the public Arrivals area (opposite gates 1 and 2). You have the choice between all car levels, from economy to luxury.

Before You Go: Layover Tips

Now that you are motivated and excited about your mini layover vacation check a few final logistical concerns off your list before you fully commit.

  • Do you need to organize a visa to leave the airport? Requirements change frequently and for each nationality, so be sure to seek out current details on the availability, cost, and procedures of obtaining a transit visa.
  • When is your next flight’s check-in time? Double-check with your airline exactly when you need to be at the airport – and plan your layover accordingly.
  • What are security wait times like at the airport? Some airports are notorious for extended security wait times, so be sure to research in advance and factor that into your overall time budget.
  • What’s happening with your luggage? When you check in to your first flight, confirm whether your luggage will be checked through or needs to be picked up between your connecting flights. Check out our Bahrain Airport Guide for information on luggage storage.
