We’re living in the age of “ Barbie ,” and nowhere has that been more evident than the custom fashions Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal curated for the billion-dollar grossing movie’s press tour.

Since debuting the first look at “Barbie” at CinemaCon in April 2022, Robbie has rocked Barbiecore styles on nearly every red carpet and press appearance (most recently stunning in custom Armani inspired by 1977’s Superstar Barbie at the Golden Globes ), all of which will now be commemorated in the fashion photo book “Barbie: The World Tour.”

Popular on Variety

The press tour for “Barbie” sent Robbie, writer-director Greta Gerwig, and the cast on a summer world tour, with stops in Toronto, Canada; Sydney, Australia (Robbie is from Queensland); Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Los Angeles, California; and London, England. At each of these stops — and at the airports — Mukamal sourced or commissioned dozens of outfits that were a nod to a look worn by the original doll.

But when the “Barbie” press tour was cut short due to the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, a press release announcing the book explains, Robbie and Mukamal “worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.”

Vogue recently touted Robbie’s “Barbie” wardrobe as confirmation that “method dressing is here to stay,” but, for Variety’s recent cover story saluting LuckyChap as 2023 showpeople of the year, Variety posited that, in some ways, the looks were an extension of her vision as a producer.

In her eyes, the “experience” began the moment paparazzi captured her and Ryan Gosling filming a scene on the Venice Boardwalk, roller blading in ‘80s-style multi-colored spandex and neon yellow kneepads. Onscreen, Barbie is wrestling with the discomfort of being perceived for the first time and Robbie, too, was aware that they were being watched.

“That’s when we started entertaining the audience,” she explained. “We started crafting the marketing campaign before shooting began. It needs to build to crescendo, to have mystery. All the things that you’d put into a narrative story, we should be looking at that holistically for the campaign too.”

And promoting the movie is part of that experience.

“Our vision of ‘Barbie,’ both as a character and the movie, is joyful and unapologetic,” Robbie concluded. “So, here are these big, bold, joyful looks. They also have a lot of craft in them, and they are rooted in history, and brilliant designers worked really hard.”

The book hits shelves on March 19, from Rizzoli publishing, and features a foreword by Edward Enninful, introduction by Margaret Zhang and an afterword by “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

We all know that the plot of this summer's Barbie movie (in theaters July 21) revolves around Barbie and Ken swapping Barbie's Dreamhouse for the real world. (Although, if we're honest, we'd love to swap our world for Barbieland for a bit). And thanks to the newest announcement from Barbie the Movie 's Instagram, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who play Barbie and Ken, respectively) will be taking a trip around our world, just like their characters.

See on Instagram

"You don't have to go all the way to Barbieland to hang with Barbie and Ken," Robbie says in the promo.

"Margot and I are taking this show on the road," Gosling adds.

The film hits theaters on July 21, but the Barbie team is doing more than just one big premiere — they're doing eight premieres. Films often host premieres in different countries, allowing fans all over the world to be a part of the experience. And Barbie the Movie is no different.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will embark on a world tour that, in addition to the usual New York City and Los Angeles, includes six more cities:

  • Toronto, Canada
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Seoul, South Korea
  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • London, England
  • Berlin, Germany

Not only does the promo give us that exciting news, but it also features some amazing fashion choices, just like we've seen throughout the entire promotional process. From CinemaCon to showing the cast their own IRL Barbie dolls , the fashion choices have put creativity at the forefront. Well, creativity and pink, of course.

We're obsessed with Robbie's corset and mini skirt (a combo fit for a Barbie doll if you ask us). Gosling is also rocking pink, just a more laidback salmon that will definitely influence our next swimsuit cover up purchase.

And, just like us, the pair also has their summer packing list top of mind: "Are you packing your roller blades?" Robbie asks, to which Gosling gives her a smirk. "You know I can't roller blade in real life."

Barbie and Ken go global

Through a video shared on official social media accounts, the actors revealed their intention to embark on a tour across eight of the world’s most significant cities. This exciting journey will take them through Canada, Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, and Seoul.

As we enter July, the tour has begun and the timing of it aligns perfectly with the scheduled release of the expected blockbuster, which as well as starring Robbie is also produced by her, from July 20. The anticipation is palpable, and fans eagerly await the chance to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars promoting this exciting Barbie adventure.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ have generated immense interest and both movies are set to grace the big screen within a mere day of each other. Greta Gerwig earned Academy Award nominations in 2018 for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay for her film ‘Lady Bird’. She also directed the captivating adaptation of ‘Little Women’, featuring the talents of Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan.

Now, turning our attention to the star-studded cast of Barbie, it boasts an enviable ensemble. As well as A-listers Robbie and Gosling, there are also roles for Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon and Nicola Coughlan, adding to the film’s allure even for those of more advanced years.

Why has Barbie been banned in Vietnam?

You may have heard that the new movie has been banned in Vietnam, and wondering why a kids-focused adventure could have caused this reaction. Well, the answer lies in the detail of a map.

In one of the scenes a very child-like map is shown which includes the South China Sea and what is known as the “nine dash line” which is disputed in Vietnam. The following news clip explains more.

What’s the Barbie music playlist?

And as if the cast and direction weren’t enticing enough, the film’s soundtrack is set to be a standout feature in its own right. Boasting an eclectic mix of musical talents, including Dua Lipa, Karol G, Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, and even Gosling himself, the film’s soundtrack is destined to captivate audiences and is worthy of gracing any esteemed festival. Every look from Margot Robbie's Barbie tour wardrobe

From vintage Chanel to custom pink Prada

preview for Barbie - Teaser Trailer 2 - (Warner Bros)

Robbie is joined by an all-star cast, with Ryan Gosling playing Barbie's love interest Ken, alongside many other famous faces – including Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae and our summer digital cover star America Ferrera , to name but a few.

It's not unusual for celebrities to pay tribute to the project that they're promoting when it comes to red-carpet dressing (look to Halle Bailey's ocean-inspired Little Mermaid outfits as a prime example, or Jenna Ortega's goth glam Wednesday looks), so we expected nothing less than a Barbie- worthy press tour wardrobe from Robbie – but nothing could quite prepare us for the joyful ensuing parade of doll-inspired dressing, expertly curated by her stylist, Andrew Mukamal. While Robbie and the rest of the Barbie cast had to take a break from promoting due to the SAG strikes , she's now back in business, wearing more stylish looks fit for a doll. From pink Valentino polka dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles and some seriously desirable vintage Chanel, here is everything Robbie wore to promote the film.

Armani Privé

margot robbie golden globes

For the 2024 Golden Globes , stylist Andrew Mukamal dressed Robbie in a custom Armani Privé look inspired by the 'Superstar' Barbie from 1977. Crafted from pink shimmering sequins, the design featured the same V-neckline and tulle ruffled boa. Robbie finished the look with Manolo Blahnik heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery.

margot robbie

Margot Robbie perfected yet another Barbie look at the 2023 Gotham Awards; the actress channelled the "Black Magic Ensemble" doll from 1964, wearing a black Prada dress, leather gloves and an elegant sheer cape. Similar to the rest of her Barbie wardrobe , she teamed her outfit with a pair of Manolo Blahnik mules.

margot robbie

Robbie attended a special screening and Q&A in Hollywood wearing Sleeper's feathered pink pyjamas, which she styled with a coordinating woven bag and pink mules.

Bottega Veneta

margot robbie

Andrew Mukamal revealed on Instagram that his inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015. Robbie's Deadline Contenders outfit featured almost identical turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules, her favourite woven bag (this time in red) and Anita Ko jewellery.

margot robbie

Margot Robbie put a Barbie spin on a smart-casual look to attend a special screening and Q&A at the Warner Bros studios in LA. The actress wore a bright pink Versace blazer, a corset top and classic blue jeans. She finished the look with pointed Manolo Blahnik pumps (pink, of course) and loose soft waves.

Margot Robbie's stylist Andrew Mukamal took to Instagram to share a glimpse at some of the unseen looks from her Barbie tour wardrobe (worn for interviews or less public press appearances – scroll through the carousel to see more), including a metallic pink Versace dress and a Clueless -worthy yellow Chanel two-piece. Many of the outfits were paired with her bespoke Manolo Blahnik collection, created specifically for this tour.

"Barbie is truly iconic, so when asked to provide shoes for the wonderful Margot Robbie, whom I adore, I wanted to update some of my most successful designs that have been in my collections for decades, with a Barbie twist of course," designer Blahnik told Bazaar . "Pink is one of my absolute favourite colours – from cerise to powder pink, I love them all – and so it has been a joy to reimagine these styles in a host of pink hues."

Vivienne Westwood Couture

margot robbie

For the European Barbie premiere held in London, Margot Robbie paid tribute to the late, great British designer Vivienne Westwood, wearing a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990. The corseted dress featured a draped side train, crafted in blush pink satin and embroidered white tulle, and was accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Vivienne Westwood

Margot Robbie wore a second Vivienne Westwood ensemble while in London, attending the film's photocall in this printed skirt suit, worn with chunky platform heels and a square textured bag. She added Tiffany & Co jewellery to the look for an extra touch of sparkle.

Dilara Findikoglu

margot robbie

On the same evening, Robbie carried on the celebrations in a red corseted mini-dress by the Turkish-British fashion designer Dilara Findikoglu. Her party look was inspired by the 1962 "Brunette Bubble Cut" Barbie, who wore a red swimsuit. The look was accessorised with Assael jewels and a Maison Ernest satin bag.

Schiaparelli Haute Couture

margot robbie barbie

Perhaps Margot Robbie's most glamorous Barbie look of the entire tour was this black custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown. For the Los Angeles premiere of the highly-anticipated film, the actress wore a design inspired by the doll's 'Solo in the Spotlight' look from 1960. It featured a glittering strapless dress with a tulle hem and a red rose accent, worn with matching opera gloves and a sheer handkerchief. She finished her red-carpet look with a Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker necklace, a bold red lip and a sleek updo.

Emilio Pucci

margot robbie barbie

Margot Robbie's 'Totally Hair' Barbie look, based on the 1992 doll was just that; the actress wore her hair in impressive super-long waves, with an Emilio Pucci dress, pink Manolo Blahnik heels, a Chanel bag and Taffin jewellery.

The actress wore a neon pink corseted Balmain mini dress with silver statement earrings and a matching chain belt, to attend the Mexico premiere.

A more casual take on the Barbie wardrobe came courtesy of this Bottega Veneta look for a day in transit, complete with baby pink Manolo Blahnik mules and Jessica McCormack diamond earrings.

Vintage Moschino

margot robbie

Margot Robbie kept up her vintage style streak, wearing a Moschino skirt suit from the brand's spring/summer 2015 collection to the film's press conference in Seoul . In true Barbie style, she kept her accessories perfectly matching, with a coordinating heart-shaped bag and pink Manolo Blahnik mules.

margot robbie

For the Barbie premiere in Seoul, Robbie turned to Versace, a favourite brand in her press tour wardrobe. This look – based on another outfit worn by the original Barbie doll – featured a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone.

margot robbie

The actress wore a second look from Versace at the premiere –a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs. She wore her hair in the classic Barbie style of loose blonde waves, which fell perfectly over one shoulder.

margot robbie barbie tour

In-between red carpets, Robbie was seen wearing a vintage patterned Moschino mini-dress, from the brand's spring/summer 2019 catwalk show. In true Barbie style, Robbie relied on the power of accessories with a pair of white Manolo Blahnik heels and matching white-framed sunglasses , which are becoming a regular feature in her tour wardrobe.

Vintage Versace

Another vintage moment for Margot Robbie, this time in Versace. The look – from the archives of the Italian fashion house's autumn/winter 1994 collection – perfectly captures Barbie's aesthetic with a metallic pink pleated skirt and high-neck knit, paired with purple socks, white heels and Jessica McCormack jewellery.

margot robbie

While on stage at a Barbie fan event in Sydney, – joined by co-stars America Ferrera, Issa Rae and director Greta Gerwig – Robbie added a pair of white sunglasses to her vintage Versace look.

margot robbie

Yet another vintage Versace moment for the actress, who stepped out on the pink carpet in a blush chainmail Versace mini-dress, while attending a Barbie party in Sydney. The dress was originally worn by the model Claudia Schiffer in 1994.

Margot Robbie And Ryan Gosling Are Still Trying To Make ‘Barbiecore’ Happen

This barbie is on a press tour.

Barbie-Press-Tour

When Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were cast as Barbie and Ken, respectively, in Greta Gerwig’s satirical film adaptation of the iconic doll, we knew their Barbie press tour would be a sartorial tour de force.

But sadly, the internet jumped the pastel-pink gun, making the life-in-plastic Barbiecore aesthetic peak an entire year before the film’s release.

Thanks to the over-saturation of Valentino’s PP Pink and the 290.7 million TikTok users producing their own interpretations of silicon style, our expectations for a magnum opus of ensembles from the cast that slyly references Barbie’s history have been quashed.

Now, with Robbie and Gosling making their first red carpet appearance to promote the upcoming film, their attempts of channelling their characters through pretty in pink silhouettes are not the masterful displays of sartorial wit we were hoping them to be, but rather a borderline campy display of why the Barbiecore aesthetic climaxed and fizzled.

Taking to the stage at the 2023 CinemaCon, the pair gave new meaning to the phrase blonde ambition with their attempts to revive the lurid aesthetic slightly the miss.

Ryan-Gosling-Margot-Robbie-Barbie

Robbie appeared to lean into the executive realness category of Barbie’s wardrobe, donning a pink gingham check two-piece from Prada that proved she meant business.

Robbie departed from her signature Malibu beachy waves , opting for a simple straight style, which she parted to the side, meaning her look could do all the talking.

And shouting it was, with its wrap mini skirt and 1950s-inspired bustier contrasted with a black scallop piping clearly saying: “This Barbie is under contract to dress like this until July.”

Gosling on the other hand kept true to the film’s tagline, “She’s everything, he’s just Ken” , by opting for a Marlon Brando-inspired jeans and a tight-white shirt combination.

We give him props for wearing a magenta Acne Studios hoodie and a shirt emblazoned with the phrase “from director Greta Gerwig”, but we’re confident their respective outfit choices are proof that Gosling’s Ken will be riding on the coattails of Robbie’s Barbie.

Either way, it’s clear the Barbiecore aesthetic is bringing a saccharine Ken-ergy to 2023, whether we like it or not.

Every Single Barbie Doll Reference From Margot Robbie’s Barbie Press Tour

By Sam Reed

Margot Robbie attends the Seoul Premiere of Barbie on July 02 2023 in Seoul South Korea.

While the rest of the world has embraced Barbiecore for well over a year now, Barbie herself is finally joining us.

Margot Robbie, who plays the Barbie in the upcoming Barbie movie , is leaning into the role off-screen as well, fully committing to the Barbie look for premieres, photo calls , and everywhere in between. No airport pap walk has been spared the wrath of pink on pink on pink .

Along with stylist Andrew Mukamal, Robbie has been putting in the work to make her press tour looks as authentic as possible. In fact, several of her ensembles are piece-for-piece recreations of Barbie outfits from decades past.

Starting from before the film’s release on July 21, 2023, we’re tracking all of Robbie’s Barbie outfits, and the iconic Barbie dolls that inspired them.

Pink and Fabulous Barbie 2015 Robbie in Valentino

Pink and Fabulous Barbie, 2015; Robbie in Valentino

If Barbie owned a sports team, its colors would be hot pink, white, and yellow (Free idea, Mattel! Billionaire Sports Magnate Barbie!), because no other color combo is as instantly recognizable.

Case in point: For a photo call in Beverly Hills, which marked the official kickoff of the Barbie press tour, Robbie wore all three of Barbie’s favorite colors, channeling 2015’s Pink and Fabulous Barbie in a polka-dot Valentino minidress. Even if you didn’t know what Robbie was promoting (though, such is the marketing budget for this film that it feels impossible you wouldn’t know), the color scheme gives it away. She’s just too fabulous!

Robbie in Bottega Veneta

Get in, loser; we’re going to the Barbie-Oppenheimer double feature.

The Barbie convertible (doll size) is almost as iconic as the Barbie Jeep (small-child size). But even better? The Barbie convertible (adult size).

Sure, you could’ve painted any old convertible pink and called it a Barbie car, but it’s just not the same without Margot Robbie, clad in head-to-toe Bottega Veneta, sitting in the driver’s seat.

Robbie at CinemaCon in Prada Robbie at the airport in Chanel

Robbie at CinemaCon in Prada; Robbie at the airport in Chanel

Barbie has been sporting gingham—specifically baby pink gingham—since at least 1973, when the Quick Curl doll (below) was released. However, the pattern may be more than a winking reference to Barbie’s heritage.

After the Barbie movie trailer was released in May, fans noticed a few references to The Wizard of Oz —including Barbie’s pink gingham belted dress. Could it be a coincidence, or is Barbie’s look a nod to Dorothy’s famous blue gingham dress?

In addition costumes from the movie, Robbie has already worn the classic checked pattern a few times during the press tour, including a two-piece Prada bra and miniskirt set (above), and a vintage Chanel blazer (which I’ll concede is more of a plaid than a gingham, but close enough).

Teenage Fashion Model Barbie 1959 Robbie in Herv Lger

Teenage Fashion Model Barbie, 1959; Robbie in Hervé Léger

Robbie and Mukamal’s work on the recreation of 1959’s Teenage Fashion Model Barbie is truly impressive. The striped Hervé Léger bandage dress mimics the strapless silhouette of the OG Barbie’s swimwear, but the look really comes down to the accessories: white cat-eye sunglasses with blue lenses, patent leather peep-toe mules, and gold hoop earrings are one-for-one recreations. And Robbie’s glam just takes the whole thing over the top. From her perfectly curled pony to the red polish peeking out of her peep-toe shoes, this one is really just perfection.

This isn’t the only time we’ve seen this look, either. We got a glimpse of Robbie in a similar get-up back in December of last year, when Warner Bros. released the film’s first teaser trailer. Clearly, Teenage Fashion Model Barbie was featured prominently on the film’s mood board.

DaytoNight Barbie 1985 Robbie in Versace

Day-to-Night Barbie, 1985; Robbie in Versace

Back before the concept of remote work was even fathomable, the “working girl” was often concerned with transitioning her outfit from “day” at the office to “evening” (at least if women’s magazines of the time are to be believed).

DaytoNight Barbie 1985 Robbie in Versace

Enter “Day-to-Night” Barbie , released in 1985. Robbie wore the Versace version of this 9 to 5 –era classic to the Seoul premiere on July 2. Mukamal and Robbie went the extra mile on this one, even bedazzling a faux 1980s cellphone accessory. We love a commitment to the bit.

Sparkling Pink Barbie 1964 Robbie in Moschino

Sparkling Pink Barbie, 1964; Robbie in Moschino

It was only a matter of time until we got the Moschino version of a Barbie look, and the Italian brand did not disappoint. Their take on the Sparkling Pink Barbie from 1964 is pure camp, from the intense pink hue to the rhinestone embroidery to the quilted heart-shaped leather bag.

Though Moschino took a little liberty with the silhouette, giving Robbie a shorter hemline and a more modern cropped jacket, they maintained the ’60s integrity of Sparkling Pink Barbie with an appropriate accessory: a pillbox hat, complete with an oversized bow. Jackie O is shaking.

Earring Magic Barbie 1992 Robbie in Balmain

Earring Magic Barbie, 1992; Robbie in Balmain

Robbie and Mukamal went back in time once again for the Naucalpan de Juarez premiere in Mexico on July 6, paying homage to Earring Magic Barbie (1992) and her hot pink minidress. Robbie’s version is Balmain and pretty perfectly matches the original without looking too dated—even with the silver chain belt and coordinating earrings weighed down with star charms.

Of course, I selfishly hoped that the actor would’ve committed more fully to the fluffy crimped hair, bangs and all. Maybe next time?

Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in Mexico

Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in Mexico

Ryan Gosling joined Robbie on the pink carpet for the event; however, he was sadly not dressed as Earring Magic Ken , (or Gay Ken, as the doll was labeled by the public back when it was released in 1993). True to his name, that Ken did wear an earring, as well as a purple mesh T-shirt styled under a matching lavender pleather vest. His look caused an uproar from some scandalized parents who just couldn’t handle his drip, but his release also opened up a national discourse about gender and was popular among the LGBTQ community. We love him for that.

Totally Hair Barbie 1992 Robbie in Emilio Pucci

Totally Hair Barbie, 1992; Robbie in Emilio Pucci

This Barbie is like, totally all about the hair.

For a photocall in Mexico, Robbie channeled Totally Hair Barbie from 1992 in an Emilio Pucci minidress and hot pink stiletto heels. She passed on Barbie’s oversized cotton headband (sad) but did commit to crimped, waist-length waves. And that’s really all we can ask for!

Solo in the Spotlight Barbie 1960 Robbie in Schiaparelli

Solo in the Spotlight Barbie, 1960; Robbie in Schiaparelli

For the LA premiere on July 9, Robbie pulled off her glitziest Barbie look yet: a strapless Schiaparelli couture dress with a voluminous tulle hem. As always, Robbie and Mukamal took their styling cues from Barbie—this time, Solo in the Spotlight Barbie (1960). From the pale pink handkerchief and peep-toe pumps to the black opera gloves and layered diamond necklace, the pair have once again out done themselves. The only thing missing is a mic stand.

Robbie’s look is a custom creation from Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry and includes a hand-painted rose, which the designer affixed to the dress’s hem. Schiaparelli shared the full process, from sketch to final product, on Instagram.

Though today you can find Astrophysicist Barbie or Game Developer Barbie, back in the early days of Barbie’s existence, her career paths were limited to more glamorous options: singer, ballerina, teenage fashion model, and “career girl,” to name a few.

Enchanted Evening Barbie 1960 Robbie in custom Vivienne Westwood

Enchanted Evening Barbie, 1960; Robbie in custom Vivienne Westwood

When people talk about the Golden Era of Hollywood, this is what I picture: show-stopping satin gowns with trains so long they require multiple handlers, opera gloves that might as well be sleeves, jewelry that’s maybe a little bit costumey but simultaneously rich. I picture a woman about to have an enchanted evening. In other words, I picture Enchanted Evening Barbie from 1960.

For the London premiere of Barbie on July 12, Robbie wore a custom Vivienne Westwood recreation of Enchanted Evening Barbie’s super-glamorous look. Like her Los Angeles, Mexico, and Korea premiere ensembles, this one is a piece-for-piece replica of the OG Barbie’s look, down to the three-strand pearl choker and rosette hip accent.

Where Robbie did deviate is her hairstyle. Rather than micro-bangs and a ponytail, the actor wore a ’90s chignon with two wispy pieces framing her face.

At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, where Robbie and her Barbie producing partners took home the first-ever Golden Globe for cinematic box office achievement, Robbie channeled Superstar Barbie in a hot pink V-neck gown with a matching tulle boa by Giorgio Armani Privé

Ever committed to the bit, Robbie changed out of Superstar Barbie’s pink gown into a re-creation of her matching sparkly black dress for the after parties. You really love to see it.

Margot Robbie Debuts a Last Barbie Press Tour Outfit Before Actors Strike

The Barbie star and her co-stars will be joining other SAG-AFTRA members, ending the summer film's pre-release press run early.

Robbie said at the film's London premiere yesterday that she would “absolutely” be part of the strike. “I'm very much in support of all of the unions,” she told Sky News . “And I'm a part of SAG so I would absolutely stand by that.” ( LaineyGossip pointed out that Robbie wore an outfit recreated from a 1960 Barbie doll at that premiere, which was also the last year that both the writers' and actors' guilds in Hollywood were on strike at the same time. The choice may be a subtle and clever styling nod to the history that was made then and will be made now.)

The Barbie press tour was supposed to go longer; Barbie was slated to have a Berlin and New York City premiere as part of its global press tour, as Ryan Gosling and Robbie announced in early June. The cast already did appearances in Sydney, Toronto, Seoul, Mexico City, and London.

Unless a contract is negotiated swiftly—which seems unlikely, given how SAG characterized negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers leading up to the strike during its press conference today —those cities' premieres, if they are still on at all, will not include have appearances from the cast.

Robbie's Barbie fashion run featured her recreating outfits from several iconic Barbies, from 1992 dolls in Mexico to the first-ever Barbie released in 1959 in Australia.

Margot Robbie's Barbie-est Barbie Press Tour Looks

It's a Barbie world. We're just living in it.

Getty Images

Barbie rave reviews are pouring in, and Margot Robbie stays winning. Not only is the star having the time of her life channeling the world-famous doll at the film's press events, but she's nailing Mattel-inspired looks at Barbie screenings around the world. From red carpet premieres to conventions, Robbie's Barbie looks have gone above and beyond. Robbie's 'fits on the Barbie movie press tour don't just adhere to the doll's signature shades of pink. Much like the highly anticipated film itself, Robbie's wardrobe has major layers.

At the European premiere of Barbie on Wednesday, July 12, Robbie was a vision in satin and tulle on the pink carpet at Cineworld Leicester Square in London. First off, the gown. Robbie wore corseted Vivienne Westwood in petal pale pink. This dress had it all: a vintage Barbie look it homaged , a rosette at the waist, and gauzy train. The "Enchanted Evening" look was accented with a fluffy tulle off-the-shoulder shrug, shoulder-length opera gloves, a three-strand Assael Pearls choker and sparkling Christian Louboutin pumps.

In a rare non-pink moment, Robbie stood out at the L.A. premiere of Barbie wearing an extravagant high-fashion replication of Mattel's 1960 "Solo in the Spotlight" Barbie . Wearing a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown and opera gloves, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and Manolo Blahnik peep-toe heels, the Barbie star managed to look entirely the part without so much as an accessory in the iconic doll's signature shade.

On July 3, at a Barbie press conference in Seoul, South Korea, Robbie channeled retro Barbie vibes in a Moschino matching set. Not only did the bright pink look include a heart-shaped, studded purse, pillbox hat, and matching Manolo Blahnik peep-toe pumps, but it was a near-perfect replica of a vintage 'fit worn by Barbie herself .

The good times kept on rolling in Mexico City where Robbie paid homage to the bestselling Barbie of all time: 1992's Totally Hair Barbie . We weren't just in awe of her very '90s patterned Pucci minidress, pink Manolo Blahnik pumps, perfectly-matched Chanel bag, and Taffin jewelry.

Robbie committed to becoming an IRL doll and wore her hair in long, brushed-out curls nearly identical to Totally Hair Barbie's blonde mane. This look served and we ate it up. But we've only scratched the surface.

On Sunday, July 2, Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal (who, frankly, deserves a Pulitzer Prize for all the historical context he's bringing to Robbie's looks) shared an Instagram post featuring a side-by-side comparison of the two designer 'fits Robbie wore to the Barbie premiere in Seoul, South Korea, alongside the vintage Barbie doll looks that inspired them.

Mukamal didn't just ensure that Robbie was dressed to the nines in Atelier Versace, but that her accessories, including a bedazzled first-gen cellphone and Manolo Blahnik heels — a Barbie tour staple — were also on point. Business Barbie would be proud.

On Friday, June 30, Robbie wore a glittering pale pink ensemble at the Barbie Celebration Party at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia. Her sparkling metallic strapless minidress from Atelier Versace's 1994 Fall/Winter collection stole the show, but her clear Manolo Blahnik pumps were just as on-brand.

Earlier that day, Robbie channeled both '90s supermodels and Barbie in a cropped sweater and metallic pleated skirt from Versace's 1994 Fall/Winter collection. Her white platform loafer heels were deliciously retro, especially when paired with pale fuchsia ankle socks.

Not only are Robbie's press looks meticulously "Mattel-ified," but she is living and breathing Barbie, down to her travel wear. Method acting is impressive, but method-dressing at the airport? Well, that's just next-level.

Splash News

Not only did Robbie wear a vintage Chanel jacket from the fashion house's Spring/Summer '96 collection while toting matching SteamLine luggage at the airport, but she posed in a pink polka dot Valentino cutout dress (with matching Manolo Blahnik pumps, 'natch) alongside a to-scale Barbie dream car along with the rest of the film's cast on Tuesday, June 25 at the official Barbie press junket in L.A.

On Thursday, June 29, Mukamal shared a photo on Instagram of Robbie posed on a balcony in an Hervé Léger bodycon mini dress and Manolo Blahnik peep toe pumps. The stripes and silhouette of the dress likely looks familiar to eagle-eyed Barbie historians, but for the uninitiated, Mukamal captioned the post, "'THE ORIGINAL' 1959." Swipe and you'll see a second pic of the first Barbie doll wearing a strikingly similar ensemble.

Robbie has been channeling everyone's favorite plastic doll since before we were even gifted a full-length Barbie trailer. Back in April, she wore a two-piece Prada matching set to CinemaCon. The vintage vibe came through loud and clear, from the gingham pattern on the bra top and miniskirt to the height and style of her pink heeled mules.

Just when you thought things couldn't get pinker, Robbie served even more Barbie realness. Before leaving CinemaCon, Robbie topped off the look with a pink plaid coat and carried a matching Prada bag. Swoon.

The truth is, Robbie has been serving Barbie as far back as January. At the 80th Annual Golden Globes, Robbie wore a custom Chanel gown that reportedly took over 750 hours to make. The pale pink halter gown, made of silk tulle and chantilly lace, was just the beginning of Robbie's red carpet road to Barbiedom.

Margot Robbie at a "Barbie" photocall on July 13 in London.

Margot Robbie served one last Barbiecore-inspired look before ending the “ Barbie ” press tour on Thursday. The actress attended the last photo call for Greta Gerwig’s film in London, which happened hours before the SAG-AFTRA strike started.

To the event, Robbie wore another Vivienne Westwood outfit: a floral-pattern corset miniskirt and a matching jacket. The top featured puff sleeves and pink front-tie fastenings and red-bordering, while the bottom was decorated with orb-engraved buttons.

Throughout the “ Barbie ” press tour, the actress worked with stylist Andrew Mukamal, who dressed her in Balmain, Versace, Emilio Pucci and Bottega Veneta.

Robbie has been making pink looks her style signature while promoting the upcoming film, which will be released in theaters on July 21. For the film’s European premiere in London on Wednesday, she wore a pink satin Vivienne Westwood gown with a white stole, a recreation of the ’60s Mattel doll “Enchanted Evening.”

The press tour of “Barbie” was planned to include a Berlin and a New York City premiere in the next few days. However, the cast of the film joined the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike, halting the promotion of the film. “Barbie” held premieres and photo calls in Los Angeles, Sydney, Toronto, Seoul, Mexico City and London.

“Barbie” sees Mattel’s famous doll on a journey from Barbieland to the real world. The film, which debuts in theaters on July 21, features an ensemble cast including Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Hari Nef, Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa. The movie’s soundtrack is just as star-studded, featuring tracks from Charli XCX, Tame Impala, Ice Spice, Lizzo and Haim.

Gerwig cowrote “Barbie” with her longtime partner Noah Baumbach. The couple previously collaborated on the screenplay for their 2012 dramedy “Frances Ha.”

Barbie(TM): The World Tour

Barbie(TM): The World Tour

Author margot robbie and andrew mukamal, photographs by craig mcdean, foreword by edward enninful, introduction by margaret zhang, afterword by greta gerwig, from an idea by fabien baron.

For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig’s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short—so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Steamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.   Accompanying McDean’s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collages by Fabien Baron, who conceived and produced the shoots and art-directed the book. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world—the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Explore Life Beyond Barbie Land in Hilarious New Trailer

'Barbie,' directed by Greta Gerwig, is in theaters July 21

Margot Robbie 's Barbie and Ryan Gosling 's Ken find themselves in a bit of trouble in the new trailer for Barbie .

On Thursday, Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer for the upcoming film based on the iconic Mattel toys, teasing Barbie's idyllic life in Barbie Land — and how that lifestyle comes crashing down when the character asks other Barbies and Kens at a dance party: "Do you guys ever think about dying?"

Alarmed by bizarre happenings in Barbie Land, Barbie is prompted by another Barbie ( Kate McKinnon ) to travel to the real world and discover "the truth about the universe," prompting her and Ken to undertake an odyssey and discover the joys — and downsides — of life with humans.

Will Ferrell 's character, the CEO of Mattel , is shown demanding that Barbie and Ken are captured, while the pair appear to be arrested after Barbie punches a man who harasses her on the street.

"To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you're a Ken," an official logline for the movie teases.

When PEOPLE previously asked Gosling what it was like to "break the internet" with his Ken looks, he joked: "Well, the  internet has been trying to break  me for years. It gave me no other choice."

He said "we've been  having so much fun making this movie  and it felt nice to see everyone else start having as much fun as we are. I can't wait for the film to come out and for that to continue."

This is the third trailer released for the movie; a teaser trailer released in December featured narration from Helen Mirren in the style of  2001: A Space Odyssey , as she explains how Barbie changed the landscape for toys. A second trailer released in April showed off Ken's attempt to join Barbie's adventure to the real world without her knowledge.

Barbie might have had numerous animated films thus far, but never a live-action depiction of the pink car and the stylish outfits. Although the idea of turning the Mattel staple into a live-action had been discussed for over a decade, it took Greta Gerwig to sign her name onto the project and make it fly off the page. With none other than Margot Robbie playing the beloved doll, Barbie has become one of the biggest box office sensations of all time. We have got you covered with all the details that you need to know about one of the biggest movies of 2023.

Editor's Note: This article was updated on December 17, 2023.

Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence.

Warner Bros made an announcement at CinemaCon 2021 that the live-action film would land in theaters on July 21, 2023.

On its July release date, Barbie competed against another buzzy film, with a massive cast, known as Christopher Nolan 's Oppenheimer .

A nationwide event titled " Barbie Blowout Party" allowed some audience members to see the comedy a few days early, on July 19, 2023.

On a strange note, Barbie didn't have screenings in every territory, as the film was banned in Vietnam for featuring a map that depicts the "nine-dash-line."

Yes, Barbie was initially released exclusively in movie theaters.

Tickets for the highly anticipated film went on sale on June 21, 2023, and a promotional video was released to coincide with the announcement.

Barbie received an exclusive theatrical release. However, after the film's theatrical exclusive window ended, it became available to purchase and rent on various on-demand services starting on September 12, 2023.

Barbie became available to stream on Warner Bros' streaming service Max on December 15, 2023, exactly one year after the premiere of the teaser trailer in front of screenings for Avatar: The Way of Water .

Stream on Max

After months and months of anticipation, the first teaser trailer for Barbie graced the big screen on December 15, 2022 before select screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water . The trailer was then released online by Warner Bros. the next day, shattering the internet in the process.

The trailer begins with a clever homage to Stanley Kubrick 's 2001 A Space Odyssey completed by Richard Strauss's "Also sprach Zarathustra" blaring in the background. A group of young girls in raggedy clothing play with dolls, while Helen Mirren narrates lamenting that in the history of girlhood, there were only baby dolls, until one fateful day. The trailer then shows a giant Margot Robbie as Barbie in a black and white striped swimsuit, towering over the little girls and giving them a little wink. The girls then break into a frenzy, smashing their baby dolls in the process. One of the baby dolls is flung into the air and starts spinning before we smash cut to the title card. The music changes to something much peppier as we see a quick montage including Robbie's Barbie overlooking Barbieland, dance parties involving Simu Liu , our first look at Ryan Gosling 's Ken in action, and a quick look at Issa Rae cheering where a ribbon saying "President."

On April 4, 2023, after releasing a large number of amusing character posters , Warner Bros released the second official teaser trailer for Barbie and, much like the first teaser trailer, it didn't reveal much in terms of plot. What the trailer did give fans is a better look at more of the film's characters as well as the film's noticeably "PG-13" sense of humor, including jokes about Ken staying over at Barbie's house for a night and a hilarious extended clip of the Kens played by Gosling and Liu challenging each other to a "Beach Off" with Kingsley Ben-Adir 's Ken trying to support Gosling.

On May 25, 2023, Warner Bros finally released the full main trailer for Barbie . The trailer finally let the audience know about the film's story, as Barbie's world starts to fall apart, leading her and Ken on a quest to the real world, where she's pursued by the CEO of Mattel and seems heartbroken at the fact that people don't play with Barbies nearly as much as they used to. Set to a new original song for the movie (more on that later) as well as the Cass Elliot classic "Make Your Own Kind of Music," the trailer promises "If you love Barbie. This movie is for you. If you hate Barbie. This movie is for you."

On July 10, a Ken-centric trailer for Barbie was released, featuring Gosling singing the original song "I'm Just Ken."

Barbie follows the titular doll, living in Barbieland, where the Barbies rule everything, taking all the jobs and houses, while the Kens are off on the sidelines, simply living as accessories. When the stereotypical Barbie (Robbie) begins to have an existential crisis, including questioning her mortality, she journeys to the real world, where she bonds with the struggling mother and Mattel employee Gloria ( America Ferrera ). Ken ( Ryan Gosling ) follows along but ends up learning about the patriarchy and attempts to bring it back to Barbieland.

One of the reasons why this live-action is a constant topic of discussion is because, for the longest time, there was practically no concrete info about its story. All that we knew according to a few actors involved in the project, is that it would be an unprecedented take on the Barbie doll that we know so well.

While the Barbie brand might initially seem limiting in regard to creating a story, Margot Robbie and her team were clearly up for a challenge, with the actress saying:

"The IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn't know you wanted'... Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we're really firing on all cylinders."

Will Ferrell , who is part of the large and impressive ensemble of Barbie revealed some interesting details about the film while doing the press for Christmas musical comedy Spirited saying:

It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It's a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn't be more satirical—just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie's criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie.

He also commented about his role in the film:

Boy, when I read it, I was like, 'This is fantastic.' I get to play the CEO of Mattel and be that guy who's just insensitive but weird and then, not to spoil anything, but…. Anyway, that's what excites me.

Even after the two teaser trailers, we still didn't know much about the plot of Barbie . Warner Bros did release this synopsis alongside the release of the second teaser.

WELCOME TO BARBIE LAND, did you bring your rollerblades? 🌟 #BarbieTheMovie only in theaters July 21. To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

We received more concrete details about the plot of Barbie thanks to the most final trailer and an interview from Vogue with Margot Robbie . Robbie revealed that the reason why Barbie decided to leave Barbie Land is that she begins to have an existential crisis , which stems from questioning her own mortality and her feet falling flat.

Robbie also revealed that the Kens that live in Barbie Land don't own anything of their own.

"The Kens have a journey in front of them. In the beginning of the movie, nobody thinks about Ken. Nobody worries about Ken. Ken doesn’t have a house. Or a car. Or a job. Or any power. And, um, that is gonna be sort of unsustainable."

In an interview with Vogue UK , Academy Award-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran ( Little Women ) teased that self-discovery would be a major theme of the film and helped her design the hundreds of different outfits worn throughout the movie:

“one aspect of the film is self-discovery – all of the Barbies but particularly Margot’s Barbie have a journey to go on, and we were able to choose elements of Barbie fashion that were appropriate for those scenes that also gave a subtle nod to her internal journey.”

Margot Robbie first became attached to the titular role of Barbie in October 2018 before officially signing on to the role nearly an entire year later in July 2019. While Robbie seems like a natural fit as the famous blonde-haired doll, Robbie says that she was also prepared to give the role to someone else :

"I didn’t want whoever our director was going to be – Greta being the first choice, but if she had said no – I didn’t want our director to feel pressured to put me in the role. So I was really upfront about like, 'I won’t be offended in the slightest. We could go to anyone. Whatever story you want to tell and whoever you want that to be, I support that. I’ve got skin in the game as a producer, I don’t have skin in the game as an actor, so be free with that choice.'"

In October 2021, the announcement was made that Ryan Gosling was in final negotiations for the role of Barbie's romantic interest, Ken. Although the actor initially rejected the project due to a packed filming schedule, the aftermath of the pandemic led him to have an open spot on his agenda to play the male doll on screen. In July 2022, Warner Bros. revealed Gosling's first picture with bleached blonde hair, tanned skin, and the traditional jean jacket. The shot lead to an instant commotion on the web and even more excitement over the upcoming Gerwig film.

In his press run for his leading man work in The Gray Man , Gosling talked about his pride and excitement with playing the iconic role of Ken.

“I felt like I was seeing myself. I felt seen. I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens. Nobody plays with the Kens."

Though when the actor was asked about any details regarding his interpretation of Ken, Gosling stayed fairly mum.

"That Ken life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man’ life, I think. Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He’s going through some stuff. I can’t wait for people to see the film. That's all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up."

The stacked ensemble cast for Barbie includes many recognizable faces playing different variations of the titular doll, including Kate McKinnon ( Saturday Night Live ) as the Weird Barbie, Emma Mackey ( Sex Education ) as Physicist Barbie, Alexandra Shipp ( X-Men: Apocalypse ) as Writer Barbie, Sharon Rooney ( Dumbo ) as Lawyer Barbie , Nicola Coughlan ( Bridgerton ) as Diplomat Barbie, Anna Cruz Kayne ( Little Women ) as Judge Barbie , Ritu Arya ( The Umbrella Academy ) as Journalist Barbie, Issa Rae ( Insecure ) as President Barbie, Grammy-Winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Marisa Abela ( Industry ) as Teen Talk Barbie, and Hari Nef ( Assassination Nation ) as Doctor Barbie. The film also includes different variations of Ken played by Simu Liu ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ), Kingsley Ben-Adir ( One Night in Miami ), Ncuti Gatwa ( Doctor Who ), and Scott Evans ( Grace and Frankie ). John Cena ( Peacemaker ) also stars as Merman Ken . Barbies and Kens aren't the only characters that live in Barbie Land with Michael Cera ( Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ) playing Ken's best friend Allan and Emerald Fennell ( The Crown ) playing the pregnant dollMidge.

As for the world of humans Will Ferrell stars as the CEO of Mattel , Connor Swindells ( Sex Education ) plays Aaron Dinkins, an intern at the toy company, Jamie Demetriou ( The Afterparty ) plays the CFO of Mattel, and Helen Mirren ( The Queen ) plays the narrator. America Ferrera ( Superstore ) and Ariana Greenblatt ( Avengers: Infinity War ) play the mother and daughter Gloria and Sasha.

Rhea Perlman ( Cheers ) also has a memorable role in the film as the ghost of Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie.

A promotional video was released featuring Robbie, Liu, Ferrera, and Rae looking at their very own Barbie dolls .

Robbie also revealed that she initially wanted Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot , to play one of the Barbies in the film, but Gadot was unable to commit due to scheduling conflicts.

Before Robbie was cast in the lead role, Amy Schumer ( Trainwreck ) was going to star as Barbie in a different iteration of the film at Sony. Schumer would later drop out of the film due to creative differences and was later replaced by Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway ( Les Misérables ) who eventually also left the project. This version of the film would have followed a Barbie who is kicked out of Barbie Land after being deemed not perfect enough.

Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig directed the film and co-wrote it alongside her partner, Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach ( Marriage Story ). In addition to occupying the lead role, Robbie is also one of the producers behind the film through her Lucky Chap Productions label, alongside her husband and business partner Tom Ackerly . Also serving as producers on the film are Academy Award nominee David Heyman ( Paddington 2 ) and Academy Award nominee Robbie Brenner ( Dallas Buyers Club ). Executive producers include Michael Sharp ( Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ), Josey McNamara ( Promising Young Woman ), Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz , Courtenay Valenti ( Elvis ), former Warner Bros chairman Toby Emmerich , and Cate Adams ( The Witches ).

Academy Award nominee Rodrigo Prieto ( The Irishman ) serves as the cinematographer, Nick Huoy ( Little Women ) serves as the editor, Glen Pratt ( Paddington 2 ) is the visual effects supervisor, and George Drakoulias ( Marriage Story ) is the music supervisor. Academy Award nominee Sarah Greenwood ( Beauty and the Beast ) served as the production designer and the costumes were designed by Jacqueline Durran.

Academy Award winner Alexandre Desplat ( The Grand Budapest Hotel ) was initially tapped to compose the film's score but reportedly dropped out and was replaced by Academy Award winners Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt ( A Star is Born ).

Both Robbie and Gosling praised Gerwig as a filmmaker during an interview with Collider's Perri Nemiroff , with Gosling saying:

"[S]he’s just such a brilliant person and such an inclusive person. She’s brilliant but incapable of being pretentious. I think what I admire so much about her work is she doesn’t allow herself to create a divide between drama and comedy, and she encourages everyone around her to do the same. So you end up mining places that are in the in-between. It feels very specific to her, but also something that you can relate to because it’s more like life."

Robbie compared Gerwig to the legendary Stanley Kubrick proclaiming:

"It’s like, “Who are my top 5 dream directors?” And Greta’s on that list because she is just an incredible dream director. She is an auteur. She is gonna be the [Stanley] Kubrick of our generation, or whoever she wants to be. She’s gonna be her own thing. It’s not even about female director or not, she just is one of the greats of our generation."

A Barbie movie had been in the works for a long time and was initially being set up in 2009 at Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark ( Jerry Maguire ) producing the project.

In 2014, the film moved over to Sony Pictures with Laurie Macdonald and Water F. Parkes ( Men in Black ) producing and Jenny Bicks ( The Greatest Showman ) penning the script. A year later, it was announced that Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody ( Juno ) would be penning a new draft of the script and that Amy Pascal ( Spider-Man: Homecoming ) had come on board to produce. Sony ordered another rewrite of the script in 2015 ordering three different drafts from Lindsey Beer ( Sierra Burgess Is a Loser ), Bert V. Royal ( Easy A ), and Hillary Winston ( The Lego Ninjago Movie ). When Amy Schumer joined the film a few months later, she and her sister Kim Caramele ( Inside Amy Schumer ) rewrote the screenplay written by Winston.

After Schumer dropped out of the film and Anne Hathaway came out, the studio brought in Olivia Milch ( Ocean's Eight ) to rewrite the script and Alethea Jones ( Fun Mom Dinner ) to direct. Pre-production came to a standstill and the project ultimately moved over to Warner Bros.

The news about the Barbie movie was first reported back in 2018 with Patty Jenkins ( Wonder Woman ) being eyed to direct, but given the delays caused by the pandemic, the production process only kick-started after Academy Award nominees Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig finished working on White Noise .

Production on Barbie finally began in March 2022 at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in England.

A few months later, Hari Nef shared a picture on social media alongside the rest of the cast, confirming that the project had now wrapped.

Sarah Greenwood revealed in an interview that so much pink paint was used for the sets of the film that it led to an international shortage .

A featurette was released on June 16, 2023, that highlighted Greenwood's work, and gave an exclusive tour of the Barbie Dreamhouse used in the film.

Reshoots for the movie took place in Los Angeles, California in April 2023.

While Barbie is traditionally a very kid-friendly property, many were wondering if Gerwig and Baumbach would be bringing some of the edge that they brought to their films such as Frances Ha , White Noise , and Lady Bird . It seemed likely that the film would either be rated PG or PG-13, but definitely would not be G or R.

Barbie was officially rated PG-13 by the MPA for suggestive references and brief language .

While it was initially reported that Aqua 's classic song "Barbie Girl" wouldn't be played in Barbie , it looks like the creative team had a change of heart as they brought in Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice to do a new version of the hit song titled "Barbie World" alongside Aqua. The song was officially released online on June 23, 2023.

Dua Lipa, who also has a supporting role in the film, recorded an original song for the film titled "Dance the Night," which can briefly be heard at the end of the first teaser trailer. On May 22, the artist officially announced that the single would be released on May 26 . The song can also be heard during the first half of the full trailer.

On June 1, the second single from the film, "WATATI" by Karol G (feat. Aldo Ranks ), was released. The third single "Angel" by PinkPanthress was released on June 9. The fifth single "Speed Drive" by Charli XCX was released on June 30, while the sixth single "Barbie Dreams" by Fifty Fifty (featuring Kaliii ) was released on July 6.

The film's soundtrack Barbie: The Album also includes songs by Ava Max , Dominic Fike , GAYLE , HAIM , Kali , Khalid , Lizzo , Tame Impala , and The Kid Laroi , with more "Barbies & Kens to be announced." The soundtrack also features a song sung by Ryan Gosling himself called "I'm Just Ken." The soundtrack was released on July 21, 2023.

On July 6, it was announced that Academy Award winner and Grammy winner Billie Eilish had created a song for the movie titled "What Was I Made For?", which was released on July 13.

Songs on the album include "Pink" (Lizzo), "Speed Drive" (Charlie XCX), "Journey To The Real World" (Tame Impala), "Hey Blondie" (Dominic Fike), "Home" (Haim), "Forever & Again" (The Kid LAROI), "Silver Platter" (Khalid), "butterflies" (GAYLE), "Choose Your Fighter" (Ava Max), and "Barbie Dreams" (FIFTY FIFTY Feat. Kail).

A sequel to Barbie is reportedly already in the works at Warner Bros and Mattel, with Robbie confirming that discussions are already underway. Although Robbie also stressed that nothing is set in stone as of set.

“It could go a million different directions from this point. But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”

Here's everything you need to know about the new 'Barbie' movie starring Margot Robbie

  • The full "Barbie" trailer and the list of artists on the movie's soundtrack were released Thursday.
  • Barbie will be faced with difficult questions about life, death, and her body in the film.
  • Here's everything we know about the highly anticipated movie, directed by Greta Gerwig.

Summer is fast approaching and along with it comes one of the most buzzed-about film releases of 2023 — Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie.

Here's everything we know about the live-action take on the world's most beloved (and hated) doll, in theaters July 21.

Who is in the 'Barbie' movie cast?

According to Deadline , Margot Robbie was in talks to headline the movie as far back as 2018, when the project first moved from Sony Pictures to Warner Brothers. ( Amy Schumer was previously attached to star as Barbie when it was in development at Sony before she bowed out in 2017 , and Anne Hathaway was also reportedly considered for the role after Schumer's departure.)

Per Deadline , Ryan Gosling's casting as the Ken to Robbie's Barbie was finalized in 2021, after Gosling had initially passed on the role due to scheduling concerns.

More of the "Barbie" movie's huge, star-studded cast was announced in early April 2023. Robbie, who's also producing the movie, and Gosling play "traditional" versions of Barbie and Ken, while many of their castmates play other versions of the dolls.

Issa Rae will play a Barbie who is president, and Kate McKinnon will play a version of the doll that is "always in the splits."

Other actors, like America Ferrera and Will Ferrell, play human characters, according to the character posters released by Warner Brothers. Michael Cera will play the only male doll character who isn't Ken — he's Allan.

Emerald Fennell will play Allan's pregnant wife, Midge, and Helen Mirren will serve as the film's narrator.

Will the 'Barbie' movie be rated R?

According to V Magazine , the comedy-fantasy film cowritten by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has a PG-13 rating.

What is the 'Barbie' movie about?

The full "Barbie" trailer was released on Thursday by Warner Brothers and finally gave viewers some plot details.

It revealed that the movie will follow America's most iconic doll as she leaves her sheltered life in "Barbie Land" behind and steps — flat feet first — into the real world.

She'll be asking some big questions on her journey (with her boyfriend Ken following along). Her biggest one, which literally stops her friends in their tracks, is "Do you guys ever think about dying?" There will be singing, dancing, and lots of bright colors along the way.

According to a recent Vogue interview, Ken mostly thinks about the beach in the film , while Barbie experiences the harsh realities of being sexualized against her will. The trailer also indicates that Ferrell's character, the CEO of Mattel, will serve as an antagonist of some kind.

What artists are on the 'Barbie' movie soundtrack?

The "Barbie" movie soundtrack was announced on Thursday and will be released July 21. It will feature artists like Ice Spice, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Khalid, and even Gosling.

What will Barbie's dream house look like?

Architectural Digest gave fans a look into Barbie's Dream House in June.

According to Robbie, there are both physical objects and sticker-decal pieces in Barbie's house that give the set the feel of being a Mattel toy.

So, for example, she has a slide in her bedroom that she can use in the morning to slide down to the pool. But Barbie's pool water is just a decal because there are no actual elements in Barbie Land.

Gerwig shared that the different shades of pink that can be seen all around Barbie's house were so important to get right that the crew had many meetings discussing the color.

Barbie's house has a bar and a magical closet that picks her outfit out every day and puts it on for her. Everyone in Barbie Land has a see-through house so they can talk to each other.

Plus, the Barbies don't have to walk down steps to get to their cars, they float into them.

"Barbie" will be in theaters July 21.

An explosion of "Barbenheimer" memes. Director Greta Gerwig's sweetly subversive comedy starring  Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll will be available Tuesday, Sept. 12, to rent or purchase for home viewing.

The biggest movie of 2023, which has raked in $1.4 billion worldwide , focuses on Stereotypical Barbie (played by two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie) as she ponders her existence and ventures to the Real World, with her adoring Ken (Ryan Gosling, also twice nominated for an Oscar) in tow.

Here’s everything you should know about the pink-saturated movie, which awards pundits have already tipped as an Academy Awards contender :

And if you're itching for an at-home "Barbenheimer" double feature , you'll have to wait a little longer on that: “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s true-life drama detailing the birth of the atomic bomb, is still in theaters only.

Is the 'Barbie' movie suitable for kids?

"Barbie" is rated PG-13, so it's not intended for young children . The movie delves into heady themes such as the meaning of life and the patriarchy. In a dance scene, Robbie’s Barbie drops the line, "You guys ever think about dying?” There is a degree of sexual innuendo: Gosling's Ken suggests spending the night with Barbie at her Dreamhouse, then acknowledges he has no idea why.

Is the 'Barbie' movie for kids? Here's what parents should know

How long is the 'Barbie' movie?

“Barbie” runs 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Who is in the 'Barbie' cast with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling?

Half of Hollywood, basically. Robbie and Gosling lead the bunch as Barbie and Ken. Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Nicola Coughlan, Hari Nef and many more play other Barbies, while Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir are among the various Kens. Emerald Fennell and Michael Cera portray now-discontinued dolls Midge and Allan, respectively, and pop star Dua Lipa appears as a mermaid Barbie. America Ferrera and Will Ferrell round out the cast as human characters.

Who is on the 'Barbie' movie soundtrack with Dua Lipa?

Dua Lipa scored a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the film's disco-infused lead single, "Dance the Night." The movie opens with the infectious new song "Pink" by Lizzo, and ends with the emotional "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish. Artists including Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Charli XCX and Haim also contributed to the soundtrack, as did Gosling with hilarious power ballad "I'm Just Ken."

What happens at the end of the 'Barbie' movie?

If you've already seen "Barbie" and want to read more, Gerwig took us on a spoiler-filled deep dive into the movie's brilliant last line, along with the real-life history of the doll's creator. Rob Thomas also opened up about Gosling's inspired cover of Matchbox Twenty in the film, and we took a look at Ferrera's powerful monologue that is resonating with viewers.

Who created Barbie?

Barbie was created by Ruth Handler , who co-founded Mattel in 1945 with husband Elliot. The doll (full name: Barbara Millicent Roberts) is named for the couple’s daughter, Barbara.

Mattel is the maker of other popular toys including Hot Wheels and Polly Pocket.

How old is the Barbie doll?

Introduced in 1959, the Barbie doll is officially 64 years old .

If Barbie doesn't exactly look like a baby boomer, it might be because Barbie was meant to be 19 when she was released, and plastic dolls aren't usually subject to the aging process.
