Though summer activities are in full swing, it is not too early to begin making plans for the fall. Belmont University’s College of Music and Performing Arts (CMPA) just announced its Fall 2023 performance season and released tickets for its lineup of musicals, theater productions, musical performances, guest artists, recitals and dance shows.

Included in the season are productions such as Hello, Dolly! , Working , Silent Sky , The Play that Goes Wrong and A Wrinkle in Time . Performances will also feature students and faculty in both classical and commercial ensembles.

“This season will focus on hope, unity and belonging and the power that the performing arts has to bring people together,” said CMPA Dean Dr. Stephen Eaves. “We are excited to welcome the community to campus to experience the work of our talented students and faculty and join us for a celebration of music, theatre and dance.”

Belmont’s College of Music and Performing Arts includes both the School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance. Students have access to a variety of performing ensembles to showcase their talents, with 25 instrumental and 14 vocal ensembles that cover styles across the spectrum. The Department of Theatre and Dance provides student opportunities and training in all aspects of theatre creation and production, including design, directing and performance, with five main stage performances per year and multiple second stage experiences each semester, and a dance minor that offers a dance production at the end of each semester.

Belmont’s award-winning, nationally ranked Musical Theatre program offers a full production each semester and the Opera theatre performs a staged reading every fall. Events also frequently feature performances by faculty-artists, alumni and special guests.

All performances are open to the public. The full schedule and ticket information can be found on Belmont’s College of Music and Performing Arts website at cmpaevents.belmont.edu .

Casey Alexander

  • Title Head Coach
  • Phone 615-460-6420
  • Alma Mater Belmont, 1995

Career Record: 255-163 (14th season) Record at Belmont: 118-43 (Sixth season) thru 2023-24 Casey Alexander was introduced as the 10th head men's basketball coach in program history Wednesday, April 10, 2019. He begins his sixth season as head coach in 2024-25. Alexander's first five seasons as head coach at Belmont - succeeding hall of fame coach Rick Byrd - have been extraordinary. Belmont's 118 victories since the start of the 2019-20 season rank tied for 13th nationally with Creighton, St. Mary's (CA), and Utah State - more than Alabama, Illinois, Auburn and Tennessee and among the likes of Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas and Purdue. Belmont posted another 20-win season in 2023-24, joining the exclusive company of Gonzaga, Kansas and Oregon as programs to win 20 or more games in 14 consecutive seasons. Alexander has also posted eight consecutive 20-win seasons himself (dating back to his tenure at Lipscomb) - one of only six active NCAA Division I head coaches, joining Dana Altman, Mark Few, Greg McDermott, Kelvin Sampson and Bill Self. Alexander also has one of the best conference records in the nation over the last eight seasons, 109-31 (.779). Belmont finished Top 3 in the Missouri Valley Conference in 10 statistical categories in 2023-24, and ranked among national leaders in 3-point field goal percentage, effective field goal percentage, assists and scoring offense. Belmont has posted 17 all-conference honorees during Alexander's tenure, including three in 2023-24. With two-time all-conference guard Ben Sheppard selected No. 26 by the Indiana Pacers in the 2023 NBA Draft, Belmont is among exclusive company with two or more first-round selections in the NBA Draft over the last five years. Despite graduating program legends Grayson Murphy and Nick Muszynski and seven of the Bruins’ top eight scorers, Alexander led Belmont to a 21-11 record in its inaugural season in the always-competitive Missouri Valley Conference. Belmont earned season sweeps of regular season champion Bradley and 2022 regular season champion Northern Iowa. Belmont’s 14 conference victories also represented the most league victories in the nation for any program in its first year in a new league since 2016. Sheppard, Drew Friberg, Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Cade Tyson earned MVC conference honors. Belmont ranked Top 50 nationally in eight statistical categories, including seventh in 3-point field goal percentage and 17 th in effective field goal percentage. Alexander was also named finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award for the third time, an award he received in 2018. He joined the exclusive company of Mark Few, Tom Izzo and Jay Wright as the only coaches in America to win 100 or more games and win four consecutive conference championships from 2018-21. Belmont has earned national Top 25 poll votes to 11 of the last 13 seasons, while finishing the season ranked Top 100 12 consecutive seasons - joining the likes of Gonzaga, Saint Mary's (CA), San Diego State and Wichita State outside the autonomous conferences. Following another impressive campaign, Belmont finished its decade in the Ohio Valley Conference with an 81-5 record at the Curb Event Center in league games. The Bruins finished first or second in conference standings 17 consecutive seasons (12 first, 5 second) before placing third in its inaugural Missouri Valley Conference season. Belmont finished the 2021-22 season with a 25-8 record, and joined Saint Mary's (CA) and San Francisco as one of three programs (outside traditional multi-bid conferences) to earn at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament and National Invitation Tournament over the last 15 years. The Bruins played one of the nation's toughest non-conference schedules, earning victories over four programs receiving national Top 25 votes - including Drake and Iona - en route to the ESPN Events Invitational Championship game, broadcast by Jon Sciambi and Dick Vitale. Nick Muszynski, Grayson Murphy and Ben Sheppard earned First Team All-OVC and NABC All-District honors. In 2020-21, Belmont went 26-4, which included 21 consecutive victories, an OVC-record 30 consecutive conference victories (over two seasons, including tournament), national Top 25 poll votes eight consecutive weeks and the program's 12th regular season conference championship in 16 years. Belmont also entered Selection Sunday with the most wins in America (26, Gonzaga). The 1995 Belmont graduate was named 2021 Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Men's Basketball Coach of the Year, was a candidate for the Naismith Men's Coach of the Year, and finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award and the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award. Nick Muszynski and Grayson Murphy earned several national honors, while Luke Smith was named All-OVC Newcomer Team and CoSIDA Academic All-American. Alexander led Belmont to Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2020, and the program's ninth NCAA Tournament bid since 2006. Alexander's 26 victories represented the most by any first-year head coach in NCAA Division I in 2019-20, and Belmont's victory at Boston College became the latest Power 5 Conference conquest. Adam Kunkel, Grayson Murphy and Nick Muszynski earned All-OVC First Team honors, marking the third consecutive year Belmont had three players earn first team all-conference honors in the same season. Moreover, Murphy joined NBA Champion Ian Clark as the second Belmont player of the the program's NCAA Division I era to earn conference defensive player of the year honors. One of the most instrumental contributors to Belmont's ascension to national prominence in NCAA Division I and NAIA, Alexander spent six seasons as head coach at Lipscomb University. The Nashville native spearheaded a program renaissance, leading the Bisons to the best three-year stretch of their NCAA Division I era and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Lipscomb won 113 games during Alexander's tenure, including 72 over the final three campaigns. In addition, Lipscomb went 59-31 in Atlantic Sun Conference games and a sparkling 35-9 during the last three seasons. Alexander led Lipscomb to a 29-8 record in 2018-19, rewriting the program's record book from total wins, national top 25 poll votes and top 50 ranking in the inaugural NET ranking system. The Bisons won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship and defeated Davidson, UNC Greensboro, North Carolina State and Wichita State in succession during an historic run to the 2019 Postseason NIT Championship game. Earlier in the season, Lipscomb defeated No. 18 TCU for the program's first-ever victory over a nationally ranked opponent. Lipscomb ranked top 25 nationally in numerous statistical categories, including scoring offense, scoring margin, assists per game, field goal percentage, free throws made, free throw percentage and defensive rebounding. Alexander was named 2019 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year, while Lipscomb senior Garrison Mathews garnered Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and Atlantic Sun Player of the Year honors. Three-point shooting was an area of strength during Alexander's tenure, as Lipscomb made 1,793 3-pointers over the course of six seasons. Prior to Lipscomb, Alexander spent two seasons as head coach at Stetson University. Inheriting a program that spent the previous decade under .500, Alexander led the Hatters to an 11-7 conference mark in Year 2; equaling the most league wins for Stetson since 1987. Stetson center Adam Pegg earned the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Prior to his first head coaching opportunity, Alexander spent two decades at Belmont; first as a player and later as a member of Rick Byrd's coaching staff. A product of nearby Brentwood Academy, Alexander played point guard for Byrd at Belmont from 1991-95. He compiled a 119-25 record as a player, and helped lead Belmont to the top of the NAIA. As a senior in 1995, Alexander directed the then-Rebels to a 37-2 record, a No. 1 national ranking and an appearance in the NAIA National Semifinals. From there, he spent 16 seasons as part of Byrd's coaching staff. Belmont won 287 games with Alexander on staff. Over Alexander's final eight seasons, the Bruins tallied 172 victories, six postseason appearances (four NCAA Tournaments, one NIT, one CIT), four Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championships, four Atlantic Sun Conference tournament titles, a remarkable 132-41 record in Atlantic Sun play, and road victories over Missouri, Alabama, and Cincinnati. Alexander's final season as a Byrd assistant in 2011 was arguably the finest in program history; Belmont went 30-5 and led the nation in scoring margin. Alexander played an integral role in the recruitment and development of Belmont standouts, such as NBA Champion Ian Clark ('13), Kerron Johnson ('13), Drew Hanlen ('12), Alex Renfroe ('09) and Justin Hare ('08). Alexander was inducted into the Belmont University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Belmont in 1995 and a master's degree in sports management from Austin Peay in 1996. Alexander and his wife, the former Sunni Dixon, also a 1995 Belmont graduate, are the parents of three children: Allie, Reed and Mason.

Belmont Double Alumnus and Doctoral Candidate Darrell Hawks

The Barn at Mill Ridge Park

May 28, 2024 | by Jasmine Simmons

  • Darrell Hawks

After a positive undergraduate experience in Belmont’s adult degree program, the Master of Business Administration was an uncontested choice for double alumnus Darrell Hawks (BBA ‘12, MBA ‘15).

“It was such a good experience for me in the bachelor's program that I didn't give much thought to other universities for the MBA,” he said. “ My experience with Belmont has been very positive not just from an educational standpoint, but also from a relationship and networking standpoint.”

Hawks serves as the executive director of Friends of Mill Ridge Park , a community-based nonprofit working to enhance and advocate for Mill Ridge Park –– a 600-acre collection of parceled land in Antioch.

As a current candidate in Belmont’s Strategic Leadership in Education Ph.D. program, Hawks is intentionally leveraging components of the program to support his work as a community organizer, particularly when it comes to effectively conducting and presenting research.

“What appealed to me about this program as it relates to my current work, is that it gives me the opportunity to learn in depth about doing research,” he said. “I can be more effective and productive in my work, the better I can understand the issue, challenge or need I'm trying to solve. Then I can effectively present that need to those who can help me solve it.”

Friends of Mill Ridge Park

Darrell Hawks at Mill Ridge Park

In 2011, Southeast Nashville was identified by Nashville’s Open Space Plan and Metro Parks Nashville’s Plan to Play as the area of Davidson County most underserved by the parks department. Mill Ridge Park, which officially opened in August 2023, is a long-anticipated solution for the “park poor” condition of Davidson County’s Southeast community.

“Mill Ridge Park is more than just a park,” Hawks said. “It is really the antidote to a community lacking sufficient green space, outdoor services and park amenities.”

Before the park officially opened in 2023, Friends of Mill Ridge Park hosted over 12,000 visits to the parklands in a concerted effort to engage the community and garner support for the park’s development through activities including hikes, birding, yoga, kite festivals, movie nights, cookouts and more.

Belmont has become a valuable partner for the Friends of Mill Ridge Park as the organization works to support park initiatives and increase its footprint in the community.

Bridging Belmont to Mill Ridge Park

Hawks’ connection with the Massey College of Business and Finance Professor Dr. John Gonas opened the door for a full-circle partnership that is thriving at Mill Ridge Park and benefiting underserved communities in Southeast Davidson County.

A one-acre plot in the community garden at Mill Ridge Park is designated to supply fresh produce to The Branch of Nashville a community resource center with a food pantry that serves the Antioch community.

Access to fresh produce is a common challenge for food banks and Belmont Honors students identified the community garden at Mill Ridge Park as an excellent opportunity to meet this need for Belmont’s nonprofit partner.

“A large portion of the recipients of food from The Branch are refugee and immigrants,” Hawks explained. “They are also our neighbors. They're our community. They are the people who this land is meant to serve anyway. It's a full circle thing.”

Belmont’s plot was made possible by a partnership between the University, Mill Ridge Park, The Branch Nashville and Cult2vate –– an organization committed to tackling food insecurity by harvesting fresh, local produce and distributing it to those in need in Davidson and Williamson Counties.

“Our big overarching goal was to create sustainable supply chains for good food going to The Branch,” Gonas said.

By building and maintaining 12 raised garden beds at the Mill Ridge Park community garden, over 500 pounds of fresh produce from the gardens went to The Branch food pantry shelves and into Southeast Nashville homes over the last year.

The BASIC initiative laid the foundation for a long-term relationship between Belmont and Mill Ridge Park which benefits the Southeast Nashville community and Belmont students by providing them an additional opportunity to earn service credits and serve the community.

Enhance & Advocate: Continuing the Work

The Barn at Mill Ridge Park

Belmont’s community garden at Mill Ridge Park is only one example of the positive impact happening through Hawks and the Friends of Mill Ridge Park. As the park continues to develop, more are joining forces to support it.

Friends of Mill Ridge Park recently received a $1.1 million grant from the Frist Foundation to preserve and convert a historic barn located on the parkland into a community space that will serve a variety of purposes. Among other things, the barn will be a space to host a farmers' market supplied with produce from the community garden at Mill Ridge Park and local farms and gardens.

“Because of the long-awaited desire and need for the space, we've seen the community respond exactly as we expected,” Hawks said. “It is well-loved and well-used. It's so inspiring to see the community coming together to enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the park space and to participate in the programs.”

At The Barn, Friends of Mill Ridge Park will host events and programs that generate sustainable income to serve and strengthen the diverse and growing community. This new venture will present more opportunities for business students at Belmont to engage with Friends of Mill Ridge Park to plan, establish and execute infrastructures for sustainability.

As Hawks continues championing the green space, establishing partnerships and fostering collaboration, Southeast Nashville’s community will continue to benefit from new opportunities created at Mill Ridge Park.
