Top Sights & Attractions for Cruises Leaving from New Jersey

Statue of liberty.

Many of the best photographs, postcards, and video footage of the Statue of Liberty were taken from the incomparable vantage point of Cape Liberty. A gift from France to the United States as a gesture of friendship and amicable relations, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in October 1886. For American citizens, immigrants, and visitors alike, the raised torch of the Statue of Liberty towering 305 feet above the New York Harbor now symbolizes freedom and goodwill to all who arrive on American shores. Immigrants making the long, treacherous voyage across the ocean to the U.S. were greeted by Lady Liberty welcoming them to their new home.

Downtown Manhattan

If you can, take a few extra days before or after your cruise from NJ to spend time in nearby New York City. Manhattan, the heart of NYC, is home to some of the most famous sights and attractions in the world. Spend a night on Broadway and watch your favorite musical. Stroll under the neon lights of Times Square among thousands of New Yorkers and tourists alike. Read a book in the green grass of Central Park and stand under the Empire State Building to understand its unparalleled vastness. Visit the myriad of museums, restaurants, libraries, famous movie filming sites, and architectural wonders in this amazing city.

Home of Alexander Hamilton

On a cruise from NJ, don’t miss a visit to the home of Alexander Hamilton in Manhattan, The Grange at 141st Street. Born in 1755 on the Caribbean island of Nevis, Hamilton came to New York at the age of 18, became a hero of the Revolutionary War, and went on to become a congressman, a prominent lawyer, and the first Secretary of the Treasury.

Learn More About Cape Liberty Shore Excursions

Where can i eat near the cape liberty cruise port.

Although there are no restaurants near the port, the nearby city of Newark has every restaurant and type of food imaginable. Additionally, there is a food truck with coffee, bagels, and other delicious bites outside the entrance of the cruise terminal, which is convenient for those departing on cruises from New Jersey.

What’s the culture & history of the Cape Liberty cruise port?

Conveniently located in Lower New York Harbor, the Cape Liberty Cruise Port was originally created by private developers in 1930 who intended it for industrial use. However, the ideal location and sheer size of the port made it an ideal candidate for use by the U.S. Navy in WWII. The peninsula upon which the port sits off the eastern end of Bayonne Bay is man-made. In 2003, the BLRA and Royal Caribbean International announced their agreement to turn the 430-acre port into a cruise terminal, and in 2013 Royal Caribbean International built a brand new, sleek, and innovative cruise terminal featuring LED lighting and modern design.

Where can I go shopping near the port?

Since the cruise port sits on a peninsula off the mainland, there are no shopping options in proximity to the port, besides a kiosk with basic essentials in the cruise terminal. About a 20-minute drive from the port, guests can find TJ Maxx and Walmart for last-minute cruise essentials.

How can I get around New Jersey?

While public transportation is available to bring you to a drop-off point outside the Cape Liberty cruise terminal, Port Authority prohibits any guests to arrive at the port in any transportation other than a motor vehicle. Pedestrians are also prohibited from entering the restricted port area, so walking from the bus drop-off station is not an option. Therefore, you’re required to acquire a taxi or other car service for the remainder of the way to the terminal (about a $10 taxi fare). Taxis, Uber/Lyft drivers, and private car services all have access to the restricted areas of the port as well.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency in Cape Liberty is the US dollar (USD). Major credit cards are widely used and accepted, and ATMs are readily available throughout the city and port. Most prices displayed on merchandise and food do not yet include gratuities or taxes. Tipping is not mandatory but is generally considered to be proper and appropriate etiquette for services rendered.

Complete Guide to Cruising From Cape Liberty (New York)

In a city that’s the biggest in the United States, it shouldn’t be a surprise that a single cruise port isn’t enough. After all, the New York area has multiple baseball, football, and basketball teams. Why not multiple cruise ports?

Wake of a cruise ship from New York

In fact, New York has three cruise ports that offer sailings — Cape Liberty, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Of course, with three ports there’s a lot of things to know about each specific terminal.

If you are sailing from Cape Liberty, then odds are that you are sailing aboard Royal Caribbean. While the port serves multiple lines, it’s dominated by Royal Caribbean, which operates the single terminal at Cape Liberty. It sails one of its large Quantum-class vessels from Cape Liberty to the Bahamas and Caribbean year-round.

To help those passengers sailing from Cape Liberty, we’ve created this guide to tell you everything you need to know about sailing from the port.

  • Distance from Newark Airport: 10 miles
  • Number of Terminals: 1
  • Passengers Carried Each Year: ~500,000
  • Cruise Lines Served: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Mein Schiff

Cape Liberty Location

Cape Liberty is actually located in Bayonne, New Jersey, just southwest of Manhattan. Only about 12 miles from the open waters of the Atlantic, it’s a relatively convenient location to start a cruise as it only takes a short time to get out to sea.

Map of location of Cape Liberty

Newark Airport is by far the closest airport to the cruise port (about 10 miles). It’s just about a 20-minute car ride from the ship.

Driving the port? Then you’ll want to use this address:

4 Port Terminal Blvd, Bayonne, NJ 07002

Of course, many people fly into the New York area to spend some time before their cruise. And with millions of people living in the metro, still more drive to the port. If this applies to you, here are the distances and expected drive times to get to Cape Liberty:

  • Newark Airport: 10 miles | 15-25 minutes
  • LaGuardia Airport: 20 miles | 35-60 minutes
  • JFK Airport: 28 miles | 45-75 minutes
  • Brooklyn: 16 miles | 45-65 minutes
  • Manhattan: 15 miles | 45-60 minutes
  • Queens: 25 miles | 45-65 minutes
  • The Bronx: 28 miles | 45-65 minutes

Cruise Terminals at the Port

Cape Liberty is served by a single terminal, operated by Royal Caribbean. Updated just a few years ago, it is now a 125,000 square foot terminal designed to handle some of the cruise line’s largest ships.

The terminal is at the end of the roughly mile long pier, next to the famous Tear Drop Memorial that serves as a monument to the September 11 attacks.

Transportation options can drop you off right at the terminal, and there is also on-site parking available (details below)

Getting to the Port (Transportation)

In a large metro area like New York, there is no shortage of ways to get around. Whether you plan to drive yourself to the port, take a cab, catch an Uber, or a shuttle, you have a number of options.

We’ve covered all of the ways to get to Cape Liberty (whether coming from the airport or points elsewhere) here . Below, we have some highlights of the most common ways to the ship.

Driving to Cape Liberty If you live in the area, then you might be able to simply drive to the port, or have a friend/family member drop you off.

Driving to the port also offers the most flexibility of any option. You can arrive when you want and also head home as soon as you get off the ship. There is no need to wait for a ride. If you do drive and need to park, Cape Liberty has a parking garage onsite, right next to the cruise terminal.

Uber/Lyft Flying in for your cruise? Or maybe you live in the area and don’t have a car… or just don’t want to pay for parking. Uber and Lyft are a convenient way to get to the cruise port and get back once your cruise is over.

If you aren’t familiar with these apps, you simply download them to your phone and then you can order a ride from just about anywhere. The entire transaction is handled through your phone. We have more details on using Uber & Lyft to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port here .

Estimated rates from points of interest are below. Uber and Lyft charge an $20 fee for rides that originate in New York and end in New Jersey (or vice versa). To avoid this extra cost, you can take public transportation from New York to New Jersey and then catch and Uber/Lyft to the port within the state. That can save you considerably.

Keep in mind that these rates are for the car, where up to four people can ride.

  • Newark Airport: $15-18
  • LaGuardia Airport: $105-120
  • JFK Airport: $120-140
  • Times Square: $77-84
  • Brooklyn: $90-105
  • The Bronx: $90-105
  • Queens: $100-110

Taxi New York’s taxi cabs are famous and yes, they can get you to and from the cruise port. However, you should know that taking you to points outside of New York is at the cab driver’s discretion.

According to NYC.gov , “The Driver may choose whether to take such trips. The fare must be mutually agreed upon before the trip may begin.”  If hailing the cab in New Jersey, there will be no issues with them getting to the cruise port.

Estimated fares are below, but keep in mind that they can vary depending on what you negotiate. Above all, we’d suggest not paying more than the Uber/Lyft rates listed above:

  • Newark Airport: $40
  • LaGuardia Airport: $88
  • JFK Airport: $115
  • Times Square: $69
  • Brooklyn: $69
  • The Bronx: $91
  • Queens: $103

For more transportation options, see our article here .

Parking at the Cape Liberty Cruise Port

Of course if you drive to the cruise ship then you will need somewhere to park your car. Fortunately, parking is extremely convenient at the port. While we have full details of all your parking options here , we think most people will opt for the official port parking.

Official Port Parking Cape Liberty features an onsite garage, as well as an open-air lot for large vehicles. The parking rate is $22 per day. Oversized vehicles are allowed, but they are charged double the daily rate.

No reservations are needed. The Cape Liberty port guarantees passengers a parking space. You’ll pay once you arrive and the garage accepts both cash and credit cards.

Hotels with Cruise Parking Given the location of Cape Liberty near the Newark-Liberty airport, there are a number of hotels that feature parking packages designed for people driving to the airport for their flight. However, you can use these same packages to park at the hotel and then head to the cruise port.

These hotels will give you a night’s stay and parking as part of a package. Often you pay only $40-50 more for a night to book the package, saving you a considerable amount of money over parking at the port.

See our full list of Cape Liberty “Park and Cruise” hotels here . We also have a few options below, with links to reviews on TripAdvisor. (Keep in mind you’ll want to book any packages through the hotel website, linked on TripAdvisor.)

  • Springhill Suites by Marriott – Newark
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Newark Liberty International Airport
  • Hilton Newark Airport
  • Best Western Plus Newark Airport West

Hotels Near the Cape Liberty Cruise Port

Need a place to stay before your cruise? The area right around the cruise port is a relative desert when it comes to hotels. There aren’t many places to stay within a couple of miles.

Instead, your best option is to stay near Newark International Airport. The airport is about 10 miles away, making it relatively convenient to the port. As well, if you are flying in and out of Newark, many hotels nearby have shuttles to the airport.

Here are a number of hotels closest to the port with high ratings:

  • Candlewood Suites Jersey City
  • Country Inn & Suites Newark Airport
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Staten Island

For more hotel options, see our listing of hotels near the Cape Liberty cruise port .

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to get to Cape Liberty? The best way to Cape Liberty depends on where you are coming from. If coming from Newark airport or somewhere else in New Jersey, then we’d suggest getting an Uber/Lyft. They are relatively cheap and quick to get you where you need to go.

If coming from New York, then we’d suggest taking public transport to get to New Jersey, and then taking an Uber/Lyft to the port. There is no public transportation that drops off at the terminal and it’s expensive to take a taxi/Uber/Lyft from New York to New Jersey due to the congestion charges.

Instead, take a train to New Jersey and then Uber/Lyft the rest of the way avoid these extra charges. More details can be found here .

What time should I schedule my flight back home from Cape Liberty? Most cruises from Cape Liberty will get you back to the port early in the morning (6-7 a.m.) to get the ship ready to turn around to sail again. After porting, however, you have to wait for customs and immigration to process the passengers. It can be anywhere from about 8:30-10:30 a.m. before you get off the ship.

As well, you have to factor in the time it takes to get to the airport. Newark is only about 20 minutes away, while JFK International and LaGuardia can be up to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Then factor in security time and getting to your gate.

For that reason, we suggest the following times as the earliest you want to schedule your flight home. Yes, you could fly earlier, but this gives you plenty of time so you don’t have to stress:

  • Newark-Liberty: 12:00 p.m.
  • JFK International: 1:30 p.m.
  • LaGuardia: 1:30 p.m.

Welcome to the best vacations on Earth!

Jeff and Ruth of Best Cruises

Best Cruises is one of the largest volume Independent Cruise Agencies in the Northeast.

We took our first cruise in 1990 – it was a 7-day Caribbean itinerary, and it changed our lives. We thought, “Now THAT was a VACATION!” Until then, traveling had involved coordinating flights, hotel rooms, rental cars, meal arrangements, and entertainment (among other things). It was difficult to budget and involved a lot of planning and foresight. We took our second cruise later that same year and we were hooked, and in 1993, after lots of preparation and homework, we opened BEST CRUISES in Edison, NJ.

Since then, BEST CRUISES has evolved to be one of the largest independently owned travel agencies in the northeast. We’ve organized over 100,000 vacations of all kinds for our clients – and not just cruises; along the way, we’ve become experts in river cruising, all-inclusive resorts, group travel, land vacations, and more. We can even arrange totally customized travel packages to make you and your family’s vacation dreams come true.

We have attained Top-Producer status with almost all of the major cruise lines and tour companies, and maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Our goal is to provide our clients with vacation packages specifically tailored to their tastes, with extraordinary personal service at the lowest price available.

City Landscape in the Northeast

Freedom to Explore

Experience the sights, sounds and flavors of the cities where America got her start.

City Buildings in Boston

Walk Among Founding Fathers

Boston is one of the oldest cities in the country, and it has the historical landmarks to prove it. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walk filled with all of the rich New England history that you read about in books. You'll see the meetinghouses, churches and burial grounds that were integral parts of forming the United States.

Fenway Park in Boston

Fenway Is the Fun Way

Bring a bag of peanuts to a baseball game at Boston's famed Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox since 1912. The Fenway Park is one of the main attractions in Boston. If you're more of an art enthusiast than a sports fan, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum are both nearby.

City Buildings in Northeast U.S.

Satisfy the Senses

Delight your eyes and taste buds by enjoying tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House, which overlooks the mountains of Maine and Jordan Pond itself. Portland, Maine, has a reputation among foodies — it's known for the indulgent sweets at Holy Donut, the locally made Gelato Fiasco and the delectable shellfish at The Shop. If you go to Boston, the North End is a Little Italy of pasta, pastries and cafes.

Beach in Acadia National Park, Maine

Hikes and Harbors

Experience the wilder side of New England in its less tame but still exquisite north.

Acadia National Park in Maine

All That Glitters

You can't miss taking in the sights of Acadia National Park in Maine during your vacation. Known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, it's no wonder 3.3 million people visit every year. Hike to the peak of Cadillac Mountain — the first place in the U.S. to see the sunrise between October and March — then feel the rush of ocean waves down in Thunder Hole. Finish the day with a relaxing sun soak on Sand Beach.

Lighthouse in Portland Maine

The Maine Event

Portland, Maine, is the quintessential New England town, surrounded by miles of coastline and idyllic lighthouses. Visit the coastal shops and restaurants along Commercial and Exchange Streets. You'll find artsy spots like Asia West and Sea Bags Maine filled with keepsakes and sundries. If you have the chance, head to the picturesque Portland Head Light, a lighthouse just a 15-minute drive away in Cape Elizabeth.

City Landscape from Old Quebec

Trek Further North

The north of New England, at the tail end or beginning of your adventure, you'll find Old Quebec, a 400-year-old town that oozes European romance. Take a walking tour of this UNESCO world heritage site, making sure to take in views of the Citadel, the St. Lawrence River and the Chateau Frontenac (reputed to be the most photographed hotel in the world).

Revolutionize your next adventure with a New England cruise

From stylish Quebec City to the north, to the idyllic coast of Maine and the historic streets of Boston, there's always something a new thing to do on a New England cruise.

ONE WEEK DOWN THE COAST

A one-week cruise through New England will allow you to visit all of the can't-miss cities along the coast, from Quebec to Bar Harbor and even down to Boston .

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO See New England Like a Local

Autumn is one of the best times to visit New England, with comfortable temperatures, crisp air and colorful fall foliage. Most New England cruises start, stop or finish in Canada, so make sure you have both Canadian and U.S. currency on hand. Depending on the season during your New England cruise, you'll need different clothes and footwear. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes as many New England ports are best experienced on foot. Packing layers is a good idea when visiting the region too. In the summer months, the weather can cool down at night so it's always best to have a sweater or light jacket on hand!

When visiting Boston, the easiest way to get around is by the subway or "the T" as the locals call it.

FRESH, FRIED AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Take advantage of New England's coastal locales by diving into some lobster rolls, oysters and clam chowder. Once you've had your fill of raw delicacies, indulge in the many fried options that the area has to offer, from donuts and cannolis to plentiful French fries.

Traditional Italian Cannoli from a Boston Pastry

Holy Cannoli

Once you've made it to Boston, you must try the delicious chocolate chip cookies at Chipyard located in Faneuil Hall. Another must-try are the cannolis at Modern Pastry in the North End, but be prepared to wait — these are not Boston's best-kept secret.

Fresh Oysters on a Plate

A Shucking Fun Time

Fresh fish and seafood is plentiful in Maine, especially in Portland. Head to The Shop, a raw bar and shellfish shop. The oysters are hand-picked daily — only the best for their customers!

Frite Alors from Quebec

Poutine, Please

Quebec's national dish is a must-have, especially at Frite Alors. This spot has been voted as the best restaurant for its classic poutine featuring crispy fries and semi-salted fresh cheese curds. Find out for yourself why the sauce is often described as a "blanket of love."

LONDON (AP) — For one night only, the utilitarian, concrete basement of London's Tate Modern museum was transformed into a lush green jungle — and it was the hottest fashion ticket in town.

Luxury Italian fashion house Gucci hosted its star-studded cruise collection catwalk at the Thames-side modern art museum Monday, showing a series of delicate sheer outfits, relaxed denim and daywear, all adorned with the brand's coveted leather bags and other accessories with the double-G logo.

Singers Dua Lipa and Solange Knowles were on the front row with supermodel Kate Moss and her daughter Lila, along with actors Demi Moore, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. Also in attendance were Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is chair and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company.

It was a big-budget event and the first cruise collection by Sabato De Sarno, who was named Gucci's creative director last year and debuted his womenswear designs in September.

Gucci normally stages its shows in Milan, but like other fashion powerhouses it chooses locations around the world to show off its cruise, or resort, collections — the shows in between the main spring and autumn displays. Last year's destination was the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea.

On Monday, models meandered down a runway that wound its way around hundreds of ferns, overhanging plants and mossy paths, the mass of green a contrast to the grey, industrial show space. De Sarno said that contrast extends to his latest designs, which paired luxurious evening looks and floral embroidery with casual jackets and slouchy denim.

And what of the footwear? Comfort comes first, with all outfits, even the most glamorous evening gowns, paired with Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats or platform loafers worn with little white socks.

“Rigor and extravagance, strength in delicacy, Englishness with an Italian accent,” the show notes read.

De Sarno featured a few checked jackets in a nod to British style, though some other designs were a much more subtle tribute. Dresses and coats covered with squares made of a shimmering bead fringe were a reference to Scottish plaids.

Titled “We'll always have London," the show was partly a love letter to the British capital, which the brand says plays a key role in its founding story more than a century ago. Its founder, Guccio Gucci, traveled to London as a teenager and had a stint working as a bellhop in the Savoy, the luxury London hotel.

The brand says Guccio took inspiration from that experience when he opened his first store in Florence in 1921 to sell luggage. The rest, as they say, is history.
