Routes North - Nordic travel guide

9 of the best fjord tours from Oslo

Sitting at the top of the Oslofjord, Norway’s capital city has no shortage of waterways, coasts and islets to explore by boat, sailing ship or even kayak, with terrific views back over the city.

Oslo's best boat trips explore the city and the Oslofjord

Some islands in the fjord are served by public ferry , but others can only be seen on a boat trip or tour. And there are plenty of boat trips to choose from that take in the best of the city’s waterscapes, from museum tours, jazz cruises to evening buffet trips.

If you want to see more of the Oslofjord and the city’s sights, however, you’re better off taking a boat tour with an expert guide on board. Here are some of our favourite Oslo boat trips!

Classic boat tour of Oslo’s museums and sights

Oslo's waterfront is best seen on a boat tour

This two-hour sightseeing tour takes in the main attractions of Oslo and its islands gives you the chance to explore the city’s tall coastline and picturesque houses.

We love that this trip is on a classic wooden sailing ship that glides past the modern Munch Museum, the Opera House and the Bygdøy peninsula, as well as several of the islands.

Museum admission fees are not included in the price, but there’s an expert guide on-board who can advise you about what to see and do.

Cool jazz sailing boat trip

Summer houses in Oslofjord

For the ultimate chill-out tour, hop on a traditional wooden sailing ship for a three-hour cruise around the Oslofjord .

Take a seat on the long wooden benches on deck for an al fresco buffet meal of tasty local shrimps served with bread and mayonnaise, accompanied by funky live jazz along the way.

This is probably our favourite fun boat trip and is a great way to see Oslo from the water and admire the nearby islands with their picturesque summer homes.

Experience the Oslofjord on an electric boat

This boat tour takes in the sights of the inner Oslofjord on a silent, eco-friendly, electric boat .

You’ll sail past the Akershus Fortress and the impressive Oslo Opera House before visiting the pretty Hovedøya Island.

En route you can admire the lovely waterside cabins and holiday homes through large panoramic windows.

We like that this boat is quiet, has a lower environmental  impact and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Sing as you sail on a sunset cruise

This sing-along sunset sailing trip has a band and singer on-board and you’re encouraged to join in with fellow travellers as you sail past the sights of Oslo.

A picnic basket of tapas and a drink is included.

This is a sociable cruise, and makes a fun way for solo travellers to meet others.

Island hopping on local ferries

Hovedøya island can be seen on boat trip from Oslo

There are some beautiful unspoilt islands a short ferry ride away from the capital, and this guided tour takes you to some of the loveliest in an action-packed four-hour excursion using local ferries .

Your first stop is Hovedøya where you can see a ruined Cistercian monastery dating back to 1147 and walk through idyllic woodland (remember to wear sensible shoes).

The next island stop is Lindøya, dotted with colourful summer houses, where can enjoy a picnic or a bracing swim at one of its lovely beaches.

The next ferry leg passes the tranquil wooded island of Gressholmen, much of which is a nature reserve, before returning to Oslo.

We like the fact that this tour uses local ferries, but has an experienced guide to show you the best places to go, and to help you navigate the – sometimes confusing – public ferry system!

Boat, buffet and beer

Dyna lighthouse in the Oslofjord can be seen on boat trip from Oslo

A good way to combine eating, drinking and sailing is on this three-hour tour which offers delicious Norwegian shrimp snacks and a variety of hot and cold drinks .

There’s time to digest everything you’ve eaten on a three-hour boat trip around the Oslofjord – and you can immerse yourself in the city’s gorgeous scenery on the way home.

We think this tour is particularly good value, as it doesn’t cost much more than a regular boat trip, but includes food too.

Explore the Oslofjord by kayak

See the Oslofjord by kayak

Suitable for experts and complete novices, this three-hour guided kayak tour , led by an experienced guide, paddles out from the city into the Oslofjord.

Heading off from the sheltered Sjølyst Marina, it’s a relatively gentle trip to some gorgeous nearby islands and beaches and round the bright white Dyna Lighthouse.

You can either have your own single kayak, or share the paddling with a friend in a double.

It’s a lovely way to see the Oslofjord in a tranquil way and at your own pace.

Winter wonderland boat tour

You can visit the Bygdøy peninsula, Oslo by public ferry

Although many of Oslo’s boat trips are summer-only, this two-hour winter cruise allows you to see the Oslofjord at its wintery best.

Wrap up warm as the boat leaves Oslo with stunning views back towards the ultra-modern Opera House. The trip heads into the Oslofjord, past the quaint Dyna Lighthouse and many picturesque islands.

On the way back you also have the option to stop off at the Bygdøy peninsula, home to the famous Fram Museum and Maritime Museum, before a final hop back to your starting point.

Enjoy brunch on a boat

Sit back and enjoy a glass of fizz with brunch as you glide silently past the sights of the Oslofjord on a hybrid-electric boat.

The food is a highlight of the trip, with dishes made from local seasonal seasonal ingredients. In spring, for example, you can expect such treats as a Japanese egg custard with smoked trout or a local shrimp salad.

Are these tours really worth it?

Of course, you can do a DIY boat trip on the Oslofjord by taking some of the public ferries and exploring on your own.

However, you probably won’t save a huge amount of money doing it this way.

Tickets to the Bygdøy peninsula, bought on board the boat, cost 75 NOK each way and the cheapest boat trip – this 50-minute highlights trip on a wooden sailing boat that takes in the Akershus Fortress, the Oslo Opera House and the Munch Museum – costs just 230 NOK.

And the zoning and ticket system on the public ferries can be quite confusing, so you’ll need to suss out which zone the islands you want to visit are in and make sure you get the correct ticket.

Also, bearing in mind how pricey it is to eat out in Oslo, some of the boat trips that include food can be good value too.

Solo travellers may like the sociability of a boat trip, though others may prefer the flexibility and freedom of going independently.

Is Oslo really the best place to take a fjord tour?

The Oslofjord is not Norway’s most dramatic fjord, but is pretty and a peaceful antidote to the bustle of the city.

And if you’re in Oslo you’ll certainly want to go out and explore some of the islands and coastline, especially in summer.

However, it can’t really compare to the Bergen, when it comes to fjord tours. From Bergen, you can take a boat trip out to see some of Norway’s most picturesque fjords, including the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord and the Geirangerfjord.

For more on fjord cruises from Bergen, see our guide to the five best boat trips from Bergen .

Oslo boat tour FAQs

Are any fjord tours included with the oslo pass .

There are no fjord tours currently included in the Oslo Pass , though it does give discounts of around 15% on a few harbour sightseeing tours and boat trips.

It also gives free travel on the ferry to the Bygdøy peninsula. For more on the Oslo Pass, and whether it can save you money, see our guide .

Where do Oslo’s boat tours depart from?

Most boat trips depart from Rådhusbrygge 3 (City Hall Pier No. 3) just in front of the Rådhus. This is also where public ferries depart for Dronningen and Bygdøynes Docks across the bay. Check with the boat trip provider, however, as some departure (and return) points vary.

Do Oslo’s boat tours run all year?

Most private boat tours run from late May or June to the end of August, when the weather is better and the Oslofjord is ice-free.

However, there are also atmospheric cruises that you can take throughout the winter, provided there’s no ice, while public ferries run across the bay from March to October.

Can I explore the Oslofjord by public ferry?

If you’re just heading out to the Bygdøy peninsular to visit the museums there, you can take the Bygdøyfergene from Rådhusbrygge 3. It leaves every 20 to 30 minutes from March to October.

It’s a short but picturesque hop across the inner Oslofjord to Dronningen Dock, where you can visit the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and the Viking Ship Museum.

The ferry then returns via Bygdøynes dock, a short walk from the Fram Museum and Norwegian Maritime Museum. Tickets can be bought on board the ferry, but they’re slightly cheaper if bought online in advance .

Public transport tickets are not valid on the ferry, so you might want to get the Oslo Pass for your trip. There’s more on exploring the Oslofjord in this guide .

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Why go on a fjord cruise from Oslo

If there is one thing Norway is particularly famous for, that’s unquestionably its mesmerizing fjords. Though the most famous ones lie in the country’s western part, those visiting Oslo are still in for a treat.

The Oslofjord stretches from the south part of the capital to the North Sea. Along the way, islands, lighthouses and wild nature paint the scenery. The best way to explore the small inlet and the city itself is to go on a fjord tour from Oslo, and here is why.

A unique city fjord

Before we start naming reasons why a cruise across the Oslofjord is a must for anyone visiting the Norwegian capital, we’d like to lay it on the line. As you glide across the Oslofjord, you won’t pass by imposing rocking formations and awe-inspiring glaciers such as the ones that adorn the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord in Western Norway.

However, the Oslofjord has its own unique charm. Combining both natural wonders and cultural sites, the Oslofjord is a feast for the eyes. Moreover, if you’re visiting Oslo for a short getaway, the Oslofjord cruise is the best way to get a real taste of the Norwegian capital without breaking a sweat.

Surrounded by lighthouses, ruins and beaches

An inlet of the Skagerrak sea, the tranquil fjord is divided into an inner and an outer part. Spanning from the Torbjørnskjær and Færder lighthouses in the south to Oslo in the north, Oslofjord boasts forested hills, azure-water beaches and picturesque bays.

A cluster of islands dots the inlet’s crystal-clear waters. As you sail among them you’ll have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their unspoiled landscapes as well as the Dyna Lighthouse. Hovedøya, known for its medieval monastery ruins, Langøyene and Lindøya for their beaches and the virgin Nakholmen island are only some of them.

Enjoy the sight of iconic buildings from a unique perspective

As you reach the inner Oslo Fjord, the Norwegian capital will unfold before your eyes. Seeing the innovative city from the water is one of the best parts of the fjord cruise. The city’s iconic buildings such as the Oslo Opera House and the reinvented Aker Brygge neighborhood will pass before your eyes.

You’ll also have the chance to see the Bygdøy peninsula and its fascinating museums. Docked in front of the Maritime Museum, floats The SS ‘Svanen’, the only preserved three-masted ship from Norway’s golden age. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready to capture one of the most historic vessels.

Relaxation at its best

The fjord cruise from Oslo allows visitors to explore Eastern Norway in an alternative and relaxed way. Lay back on the boat’s comfortable deck and see Oslo from a different angle.

Take some landscape photographs and Instagrammable shots along the way and make your visit to Oslo unforgettable.

Best Tours and Cruises from Oslo to the Fjords of Norway

The capital of Norway , the city of Oslo, is located between the Oslo fjord and the spacious, forested hills. The Oslo fjord, although it is called a fjord, is not such in the geological sense of the word, it is a bay.

Oslo fjord is a bay

The Oslo Fjord is considered one of the most beautiful places in Norway and is its famous natural attraction . Its length is 102 km, and it stretches from the Danish Straits in the south and to Oslo in the north. The fjord is surrounded by mountains up to 1700 meters high, the peaks of which are covered with snow, and numerous waterfalls pour from steep slopes.

Top view of the Oslo fjord

The Oslo Fjord is divided into 2 parts (internal and external) by the narrow Drobak Strait, and the exit from it is marked by two lighthouses: on the east side it is Tornbjornskier, and on the west – Ferder. The entire surface of the bay is covered with many small islands.

The coast of the Oslo Fjord is quite densely populated, about 2 million people live here.

Oslo fjord through the eyes of tourists

During your stay in Norway you must see the fjords . You can choose a variety of excursions from Oslo to the fjords, but it is best to start with a tour of the Oslo Fjord.

On a tour of the Oslo Fjord

A few steps from the Grand Hotel there is a small port where you can go on a sea cruise around the fjord. As a rule, this takes 2-3 hours. Tickets are sold at the bay. During the walk, the guide speaks English, but you can understand what it is about even with mediocre knowledge of this language. On many boats, a delicious dinner is included in the ticket price.

By the way, the best view of the capital of Norway is from the shores of the fjord. From here the cube-shaped town hall looks the most spectacular, in which the Nobel Peace Prize is presented annually on December 10, at the ceremony of which the royal family is present.

Oscarsborg Island Fort

While driving from Oslo, on the eastern shore of the bay, you can observe the buildings of the city of Drebak, then there is the Oskarsborg fort. On the west bank lies the city of Drammen, then the city of Halden (whose name is present in the national anthem), the fortified city of Fredrikstad.

Oslo Ford can not be called monotonous and uninteresting. More than 1000 small and larger islands are scattered over its water surface, most of which tourists can visit on a very ordinary wooden boat. On the banks, surrounded by rapeseed fields, are small houses and traditional farms. If you’re lucky, you can see goats that graze along the fjord, and seals basking on the mountainsides near the water. In general, the views of the Oslo Fjord for the photo are amazing!

Canoeing

Tourists often camp off the shores of the bay, setting up campsites for relaxation. Activities such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking are available here.

Traveling around the Oslo Fjord is an ideal option for exploring the nature of Norway with a shortage of time. The only drawback of such an excursion is that the story about Norway is too short. After exploring the Oslo Fjord, there is a desire to see more bigger and well known fjords in this country.

Other Norwegian Fjords

Norway is, first of all, the fjords that cut the entire coast in the west. The most ambitious is the Sognefjord , there is still its “sleeve” Naeroyfjord, the Geiranger fjord and Lysefjord are no less famous.

1. Geiranger Fjord

Geiranger fjord (Møre og Romsdal territory) is 15 km long. Of particular interest here are the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil Waterfalls, Ornevegen Road (Orlov Road), and Trollstigen Road (Troll Staircase).

View of Geiranger Fjord

The Trollstigen mountain road was created in the 1930s, and it was built using the most basic tools. Riding on a serpentine road, which winds along steep mountain slopes is a real adventure.

The most difficult part of this route between Geiranger and Eidsdal is the Ornevegen road running uphill and overcoming 11 very sharp turns on its way.

2. Naeroyfjord

Neroy fjord in the south of Sogn og Fjordan

The NaeroyFjord is located in the south of Sogn og Fjordane. Its depth varies from 10 to 500 m, its smallest width is 250 m, the largest exceeds 1 km.

A trip on a train along the steep high mountain Flåm Railway is a unique opportunity in comfortable conditions to observe numerous waterfalls and mountain peaks covered with snow caps.

3. Lysefjord

Photos Luce Fjord

The Lysefjord is located in Ryufülk, next to the Haugesund and Stavanger . Its length reaches 40 km and its 422 m wide.

This fjord gained fame largely thanks to the Prekestulen rock (the “Chair of the Preacher”), reaching a height of 604 meters. The rock is crowned by a flat plateau with an area of about 600 m². Scientists claim that the plateau was formed 10,000 years ago. You can admire the view of the Prekestulen rock from several places of the Lysefjord, as well as being on the deck of a ship or ferry, coming from Stavanger.

Rock Kierag (1084 m) attracts tourists with an amazing sight. In its crevice is stuck the famous boulder Kieragbolten, which has a round shape.

Kieragbolten boulder in crevice of Kierag cliff

All these attractions can be seen with your own eyes – you just need to go on tours of the fjords from Oslo.

Oslo Fjord Tours

The most popular and at the same time ideal option for tourists with a limited time is the miniature tour of Norway. The huge advantage of this tour is that the route can be made independently. This is not even an excursion in the usual sense, but rather a set of tickets for a bus, train, ferry or boat. The trip can be planned with a return to Oslo or only one way, for example, to Bergen or Voss.

Hiking in the mountains

Such a trip is possible at any time of the year. Its duration is from 12 hours, if you wish, you can organize an overnight stay in the city located along the route. You can also take part in various interesting events: fjord cruise, trekking in the mountains, kayaking. The minimum cost is from 1440 NOK per person, and the final amount depends on the extent of the tour.

Sognefjord, Norway

A tour such as “Sogne Fjord in Miniature” is also very popular. This tour provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the Sogne Fjord, called the “King of the Fjords ”, with many of its sights. The tour includes boating on the fjord, a trip along the famous Flåm Railway . The tour can be organized both one-day and multi-day, with hotels and events at the discretion of the tourist. The Sogne Fjord in Miniature tour is available daily from May 1 to September 30. The cost for one person is from 1610 NOK.

Traveling on the Flåm Railway

No less interesting is the “Geiranger and mini Norway” cruise from Oslo. This tour, combining a cruise along the coast and an excursion “Norway in Miniature”, provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the Geiranger Fjord and the NaeroyFjord. Traveling back and forth on the same ticket can be done at your own pace, its duration is at least 4 days, and provides for a return to the starting point. Cruise on this route is possible from June to August, on any day. Its cost is from 7420 NOK.

How to get to the fjords from Oslo on your own

To get from Oslo to the fjords yourself, you can use different transports. You just need to think through the route well and choose the best option.

  • To Lauwvik by bus, and from Lauwvik by excursion ferry to Lysebotn;
  • To Tau by ferry, and from there by bus to the Prekestulen House. A pier in Stavanger near the bus stop Flytobussen, tickets can be bought on the ferry itself. It is advantageous to buy a combo ticket, it gives the right to travel by ferry to Tau and back, as well as to travel by bus to the Prekestulen House. A combo ticket will cost approximately 260 NOK.

The Norway Guide

Fjords Near Oslo: How To Get From Oslo To The Norwegian Fjords

Norway is well-known for its idyllic fjords that are surrounded by majestic mountains, making quite a dramatic and beautiful landscape. While some people assume that these fjords are all over Norway, the reality is that most of these are found in the western part of Norway. Seeing one of these fjords for yourself when visiting cities like Oslo or Trondheim will require a pretty long trip.

We will be looking closer at the fjords nearest Oslo in the article, and taking a closer look at how you can get to the fjords and how long it takes to get there.

Technically the Oslo fjord is the fjord nearest Oslo, but this is not what most of us think of as a “real” Norwegian fjord. The closest scenic Norwegian fjord to Oslo is Sognefjorden, a four and a half hour drive from Oslo, or Hardangerfjorden, a five hour drive from Oslo.

Stegastein view point

Both Hardangerfjorden and Sognefjorden are considered to be one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway, and both of these are great options if you want to see these beautiful fjords with your own eyes.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can get to Hardangerfjorden and Sognefjorden, and which towns you should stop at.

How to get to Hardangerfjorden from Oslo

There are several different spots where you get a nice view of Hardangerfjorden that are close to Oslo, and we’ll be looking at two of the best options below.

See Hardangerfjorden at Eidfjord

The shortest trip to Hardangerfjorden would be to travel to Eidfjord . This is where the very end of Hardangerfjorden, so it will be the first time you see the fjord when travelling across the mountain plateau that separates the western and eastern part of Norway.

The total travel time from Oslo to Eidfjord is around 5 hours. You will come across plenty of unique natural sights and attractions along the way , so you will probably want to plan for some stops while crossing the Hardangervidda plateau.

Eidfjord itself is a cozy little town, and you can stay there for a night if you want to go hiking in the surrounding area the next morning.

How to get to Eidfjord by car : To get to Eidfjord, drive Rv7 towards Geilo, then cross Hardangervidda. It will be signs that point towards Bergen and Eidfjord along the way. You pretty much stay on Rv7 the entire trip, so it’s very easy to get there. That said, this is a very scenic route that will take you trough Hallingdal and across Hardangervidda, with a lot of beautiful nature along the way.

How to get to Eidfjord by bus: Eidfjord does not have a direct bus line, so this is not the best place to travel to if you don’t have a rental car. There are other options for seeing the fjords that are much easier to get to from Oslo by bus.

Hardangerbrua

Enjoy Hardangerfjorden at Odda

Another option for seeing Hardangerfjorden is to travel to Odda . The total travel time from Oslo to Odda is around 5 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on how fast you drive. The great thing about this small town is that it’s much easier to get here by public transport than to get to Eidfjord, so it’s a great option if you want to ride the bus.

Odda is a great place to go to if you want to see some of the most beautiful places in Norway. It’s the starting point for the Trolltunga hike , and it’s very close to Buarbreen , a glacier arm that is part of Folgefonna . It’s much more popular than Eidfjord, but it’s far from the most beautiful town in Norway.

How to get to Odda by car : Drive on E18 until you get to Drammen, then follow E134 until get to Skare. From there follow road 13 until you get to Odda.

How to get to Odda by bus : Odda is also a stop for buses who travels between Bergen and Oslo, so just jump on one of these buses and depart at Odda to get to the fjords by public transport. One of the companies that sell bus rides between Oslo and Bergen that stops at Odda is Nor-Way buses .

Hardangerfjorden

How to get from Oslo to Sognefjorden

Sognefjorden is another of the major fjords in Norway, and the town closest to Oslo where you can see Sognefjorden is Lærdal . This is a pretty small town that is popular among tourists, and it’s a nice place to stop by to look at the fjords.

I advise anyone who travel to Lærdal by car to also visit Stegastein view point , as seen in the photo at the top of this article. This is only 30 minutes away from Lærdal, and provides one of the best views over Sognefjorden.

How to get to Lærdal by car : To get to Lærdal, follow Rv7 from Oslo until you get to Gol. Now follow the signs towards Lærdal on the road 52. At a certain point you will come to E16, and follow this towards Lærdal. The trip takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes in total.

How to get to Lærdal by bus : There are lots of buses who travel to Lærdal, and both Vy and Nor-Way buses have daily departures from Oslo.

Sognefjorden

From Lærdal, the drive to Sogndal is pretty short (about an hour), and extremely scenic. Sogndal will not only have several inns and a hotel where you can stay, but it’s generally a bigger city with lots of shopping options and places to get a good meal.

Get from Oslo to the fjords by plane

If you want to ride an airplane from Oslo to get to see the fjords, the easiest option is to catch a plane to Sogndal . This is is the very center of the fjord region, and is a great place to go to if you want to experience the Sognefjord.

The plane ride itself is just under one hour, but you might not really save all that much time when you factor in that you have to get from Oslo to Gardermoen , then wait a while on the airport.

That said, if you don’t want to rent a car, but still want to experience the fjords, then flying to Sogndal is a great way to do so.

The other option for flying a plane to see the fjords is to take the plane from Oslo to Bergen , then catch a bus from Bergen to the fjords (which are fairly close by since the fjords start in the area around Bergen). Just travel to Gardermoen, book a ticket to Flesland airport in Bergen, then ride Bybanen from Flesland to Bergen city center , and ride a bus from there.

You have hundreds of different options when it comes to travel to the fjords from Bergen, so feel free to pick any you like. Just find a nice town on Google Maps, then use a bus or train to get to it.

Get from Oslo to the fjords by train

It’s actually very easy to see the fjords from the train, and you will need to book a train ticket to ride Bergensbanen . The first stop where you get to see the fjords are Vossvangen (usually just called Voss in everyday language). From there on towards Bergen, you get to ride along the fjords and have a great view of fjords all the way until you get to Bergen.

The train ride from Oslo to Vossvangen takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes in total, but it’s filled to the brim with pristine Norwegian nature along the way.

What hotel to you recommend to stay at near Sognefjord? We will be driving from Oslo in August for 3 nights. Do you recommend a boat trip, if so which one?

It’s a bit difficult to recommend specific hotels since Sognefjorden is huge. I would probably recommend to spend the first night at a hotel in either Lærdal or Kaupanger (f you’re going north) or Flåm (if you want to drive on the south side of the fjord), then drive further towards the west the next morning. Most hotels along the fjord tend to be pretty crowded with tourists in early August, but more spacious later in the month.

I have spent a few nights in hotels in this region, but none of the hotels have really stood out to me. Most are just fine, but nothing spectacular. At the same time, I haven’t really had a bad experience with hotels in this region, so I don’t have any recommendations for hotels to stay away from either. I would just browse a bit to find one that suits your needs.

Best regards Nicklas

Thank you for your very helpful article!

I’m glad you found it useful, Olga!

Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Hi Nicklas! Great article we are so excited to see your country in June 2024! We want to use the public buses and do a half day fjording it (lol) then have late afternoon/evening in Oslo. We only have a day! Is this possible? Thanks!

This is not really possible when using public buses. The buses from Oslo to either Lærdal or Odda leaves rather late in the day, making it very difficult to get back to Oslo again the same day. Keep in mind that the drive is 6 – 7 hours each way! That’s 14 hours of bus travel in a day..

Your only real option is to experience the Oslo fjord. It’s nowhere as magnificent as the fjords of western Norway though. Or rent a car and prepare for the long drive. You can probably manage it if you drive from Oslo at around 5 or 6 AM.

Awesome advice! We just booked and we will be in Norway two days before our cruise ship leaves. However we don’t have the flight schedule yet. Flying into Oslo so now we are thinking about using the train. Probably to the closest town that you suggest. Thank you so much, we can’t wait to see your country 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴

Cruising in the winter in Norway offers a very different experience from a typical summer cruise in ... [+] the Norwegian fjords.

Norway has never been more popular as a cruise destination. In 2023, more than six million passenger visits were recorded by Norwegian cruise ports, an all-time record .

Yet in the popular summer season, Norway’s busiest ports are full to the brim with cruise ships. So, where is that growth coming from?

The typical Norwegian fjords cruise used to be a summer-only experience, with ships relocated to the Mediterranean or other parts of the world for the rest of the year. But the popularity of Norway has seen cruise lines experiment with lengthening the fjords season from as early as April to as late as September.

This increase in the number of fjords itineraries comes at a time when winter cruising is also enjoying a boom in popularity, thanks to the extensive coverage of the solar maximum meaning it’s prime time to see the northern lights.

Fjords Season Longer Than Ever

The Norwegian fjords region is famous as a summer destination, with images of lush green mountainsides and bright blue skies used to draw in travelers from all over the world. Despite more uncertain weather, many cruise lines have extended their seasons in the fjords from the late spring through to fall.

It’s not just about offering the same itineraries earlier and later. James Moss, itinerary product manager at Fred Olsen Cruise Lines explains that cruising outside the beautiful spring and summer months offers chances to see different sides of Norway.

Blossoming apples in Hardangerfjord are among the attractions in Fjord Norway outside the high ... [+] cruise season.

“In autumn, we take guests to Hardangerfjord for the harvest season. In Ulvik, we offer guests the opportunity to meet local farm owners and sample produce like pears and apples,” he says.

Boom In Northern Lights Travel

Interest in northern lights cruise itineraries has also grown significantly in recent years, due in large part to the prominent coverage of the expected solar maximum in the media.

The best northern lights itineraries aim to get north of the Arctic circle as early in the cruise as possible in order to maximize the number of port calls from where aurora chasing is possible. There are also good chances of sightings from the ships themselves, if you’re prepared to dress up warm and stay up late.

Although the chance to see the northern lights is the star attraction, cruising Northern Norway in the winter offers other benefits too.

Moss says guests can “witness the fjords from a different perspective with stunning snow-topped peaks” and experience thrilling winter activities “such as ice fishing, dog sledding and snow-shoeing.”

Popular With German Lines

Norway is also becoming a more popular destination for German-focused cruise lines. AIDA Cruises—part of the same Carnival group as Costa, Cunard, Holland America, P&O Cruises, and Princess—is a common sight at ports less popular with other cruise lines such as Trondheim.

Other European cruise lines such as MSC Cruises start many itineraries from Kiel or Hamburg.

New Hurtigruten Offering

Since Hurtigruten lost its monopoly on the Norwegian coastal route, the company has sought new uses for some of its vessels.

Hurtigruten MS Trollfjord now offers visitors the chance to sail to the North Cape during the ... [+] winter.

To celebrate 130 years of the coastal route, Hurtigruten introduced two new routes for MS Trollfjord that act more like cruises than local transport. The popularity of the new offer has resulted in Hurtigruten making the two routes permanent, with a few alterations.

In the summer, the ‘Svalbard Line’ will take guests from Bergen, up the Norwegian coast, and over to Svalbard, with port calls at remote settlements Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund.

In the winter, the ‘North Cape Line’ travels from Oslo, all around the south of Norway and up the coastline to Honningsvåg, for the North Cape, before returning to Bergen. Both routes offer ports never before served by the line.

Hurtigruten’s coastal ferry rival Havila Voyages also announced an extension to its Geirangerfjord season. For many years, the coastal ferry has taken a detour from Ålesund into one of Norway’s most scenic fjords for the summer season.

In 2025, the Havila ships—which are capable of sailing on battery power for up to four hours—will also carry tourists and locals into the Geirangerfjord during April and May .

Growth In Expedition Cruising

Cruise ships carrying more than 200 guests—the vast majority of mainstream cruise lines—face tough new environmental regulations that open up the Arctic travel market for specialist expedition cruise companies. The number of expedition ships visiting Longyearbyen had already increased from 39 in 2016 to 81 in 2022.

While sailings in and around Svalbard are restricted to the late spring and summer months when light is available, many expedition ships offer trips in Arctic Norway during the winter season for northern lights expeditions and whale-watching tours.
