Disney's biggest cruise ship will carry 9,000 people on cruises in Asia

Kristy Tolley

Would you travel around the world to sail on Disney Cruise Line 's biggest ship yet?

On Wednesday, Disney Cruise Line announced new details about Disney Adventure , which will become the line's biggest vessel when it debuts in Singapore in 2025. At 208,000 tons, Disney Adventure will be about 44% larger than the line's current biggest cruise ship, Disney Wish .

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Disney Adventure will also look a little different from the Disney ships you know and love. The vessel was originally ordered for Asia-based Dream Cruises, which collapsed in early 2022. Disney bought it from liquidators for the brand and plans to debut it in 2025.

As a result, the line must work with a preexisting ship layout, a whole new ballgame for Disney. The company has historically controlled the design and construction process of its resorts, both on land and sea, from ideation to completion. The 208,000-ton ship was originally designed to accommodate a whopping 9,000 passengers, plus thousands of crew members. However, Disney plans to reconfigure it to hold 6,700 guests and 2,500 crew members. Still, that could mean more than 9,000 people on board when the ship sails at full capacity.

Cruisers on Disney Adventure will be sharing the ship with far more people than on the line's previous vessels. The five ships in Disney's fleet range from 83,969 tons to 144,000 tons and hold a maximum of about 4,000 passengers. (Disney's oldest and smallest ship, Disney Magic , can accommodate, at most, 2,500 guests.) Another way to put it into perspective — the world's current largest ship, Royal Caribbean's 250,800-ton Icon of the Seas , holds 7,600 passengers.

Despite the differences in size and layout, Disney Adventure will still immerse passengers in the brand's signature style of lively, magical spaces.

The ship will feature new themed areas that showcase Disney's core pillars of storytelling — imagination, discovery, fantasy and adventure.

An open-air performance venue will feature a lush garden and elements reminiscent of an enchanted valley. Dubbed Disney Imagination Garden, the space will draw on the adventures of Disney characters like Mowgli and Moana.

Shopping and dining opportunities within the ship's Disney Discovery Reef area will feature popular aquatic and nautical characters from movies like "The Little Mermaid," "Finding Nemo" and "Lilo & Stitch."

San Fransokyo Street, a family entertainment area and street market, will offer interactive games and activities, shops and cinemas themed around the world of "Big Hero 6."

The ship's pool area, Wayfinder Bay, will feature an open-air poolside retreat with panoramic sea views amid Pacific Islands-themed environs.

Town Square will be the hub for lounges, cafes, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. Here, passengers can immerse themselves in the world of Disney princesses, such as Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel.

Marvel Landing will host new immersive attractions that celebrate the Marvel superheroes. Passengers can also enjoy watery fun in Toy Story Place, a whimsical interactive space featuring water play areas and themed food venues.

Additionally, guests can expect Disney-level service, engaging dining options and top-notch entertainment, all hallmarks of the brand.

Disney also shared that the ship's exterior will reflect the fleet's iconic Mickey Mouse-inspired colors, complete with the line's signature red funnels.

North Americans will have to travel far to set sail on Disney Adventure. Disney's new ship will sail three- and four-night cruises departing from Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least the next five years in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board. The line has yet to reveal specific details of the itineraries. Short cruises out of Singapore will likely draw an international crowd, with many passengers hailing from Asia.

When Disney Adventure begins service, it will be the seventh ship in the Disney fleet. The line currently operates five ships; a sixth, Disney Treasure , is due to debut in December.

Asia’s largest cruise ship begins Singapore leg

biggest cruise in singapore

SINGAPORE - Asia's largest cruise ship, Spectrum of the Seas, is on the Singapore leg of its maiden voyage.

The 170,000 ton ship owned by Royal Caribbean International can carry more than 5,600 passengers.

Offering innovations such as robotic bartenders, virtual reality bungee jumping and family suites with in-room slides, it hopes to cater to multi-generational families and millennial guests.

The Spectrum of the Seas is the first of three Quantum Ultra class ships.

It began its Singapore season this month, and has three cruises lasting between three to nine nights to destinations such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong. It will arrive at its home port in Shanghai next month.

The three Singapore cruises are sold out, said Royal Caribbean.

The vessel's maiden call was celebrated on Tuesday (May 21) with an exchange of plaques between Captain Charles Teige, Singapore Tourism Board (STB) chairman Chaly Mah and Sats-Creuers Cruise Services chief executive Lionel Wong.

Royal Caribbean also announced a new seven-month home-porting season in Singapore for an existing 4,905-passenger ship, Quantum of the Seas, due to popular demand.

From October next year to April 2021, 40 sailings will be offered, making the deployment the longest by a Quantum class ship in South-east Asia.

This will add about 180,000 guests to the Singapore cruise scene.

Mr Gavin Smith, senior vice-president of International Royal Caribbean Cruises, said bringing in two of the company's largest and most innovative ships reaffirms its confidence in Singapore as the region's leading cruise gateway.

"Royal Caribbean has big ambitions for Asia, and Singapore sits at the heart of our growth in this region," he said.

Ms Jeannie Lim, assistant chief executive of the policy and planning group at STB, welcomed the deployments, saying they would "add to the diverse cruise offerings in the region".

KUALA LUMPUR (March 30): Disney Cruise Line has inked an agreement with the Singapore Tourism Board to deploy one of the largest cruise ships in the world to Singapore starting in 2025.

In a report on Wednesday (March 29), industry magazine The Maritime Executive said Disney confirmed the previous rumours that the company plans to deploy the Global Dream cruise ship acquired in the bankruptcy of MV Werften to Asia, marking the first time that one of the ultra-large cruise ships has homeported in the region.

The magazine said news of the agreement with Singapore comes as work is beginning at the shipyard in Wismar, Germany, more than a year after the bankruptcy of the yard which was controlled by Genting Hong Kong.

Disney announced in November 2022 that it was acquiring the incomplete cruise ship and would work with Meyer Werft to redesign and finish the ship for its cruise operations.

Under the terms of the agreement with the Singapore Tourism Board, the as yet unnamed cruise ship will be homeported exclusively in Singapore for at least five years.

Singapore Tourism Board chief executive Keith Tan called it an important milestone for Singapore, highlighting that they expect the cruise ship will become “an attraction itself, and is expected to boost the tourism sector in Singapore for many years to come”.

During a press event in Singapore on Wednesday officials said the addition of a Disney Cruise Line ship in Singapore has the potential to add millions of local and foreign cruise passengers across the five-year period, including fly-cruise passengers who arrive in Singapore by air.

It is also expected to bring about significant spillover benefits for the wider economy. These include greater demand for port and ship-related services, as well as on-ground spending in Singapore for the lifestyle and hospitality sectors.

Disney said details, including the name of the ship, its itineraries, and onboard experiences would be announced at a later date.

The cruise line previously said it anticipates lowering the capacity from Genting Hong Kong’s plans for a passenger capacity of up to 9,500 people with 2,500 cabins to approximately 6,000 passengers and 2,300 crew.

The cruise ship, which will be approximately 208,000 gross tons and 1,122 feet in length, is being called the world’s largest based on its passenger capacity.

In addition to being the first time Disney Cruise Line has homeported in Asia, it will be the first cruise ship over 200,000 gross tons to homeport in Asia.

Royal Caribbean International had planned before the pandemic to homeport its Wonder of the Seas (235,600 gross tons) in China, but so far the Oasis class has operated in Europe and the Caribbean.

MSC Cruises put its MSC World Europa (215,863 gross tons) in Dubai this winter, and now the ship is repositioning to the Mediterranean.

Dream Cruises, which had planned to operate the ship, announced plans for a large amusement park, water slides, shopping mall, Asian spa, and Cineplex, as well as a range of restaurants, bars, and a large casino.

A spokesperson for Meyer Werft recently reported that negotiations were underway with Disney to finalise the exact scope of the conversion work.

How Much is a ROYAL CARIBBEAN SINGAPORE Cruise? How to Book? + Other Frequently Asked Questions

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

For many of us, the idea of going on a cruise doesn’t usually cross our minds. If and when it does, it’s something we normally wouldn’t entertain. No surprises there, really. Cruising is one of those travel styles that often come with a lot of misconceptions .

When we asked our friends what they initially thought of cruises before they learned what it was actually like, most of them said the same thing — that it’s a luxurious trip for extremely wealthy retirees who only eat, drink and party on board. So yes, no thanks to how it’s often depicted in films, we think of cruises as something that’s way out of our reach.

But over the past several years, cruising has become more accessible. While no Philippine city is currently a home port to any major cruise ship, our neighbor Singapore is! Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas , Asia’s largest cruise ship, is calling Singapore home until 2024, giving Southeast Asian travelers an opportunity to explore our home region in style. SG’s central location means easy access to neighboring ASEAN destinations. Depending on your travel dates, the ship may make a stop in Port Klang (gateway to Kuala Lumpur), Penang, Phuket, and more.

Spectrum of the Seas Royal Caribbean

If you’ve always been curious about going on a cruise, but you’re not sure if it’s something for you, it’s your lucky day! We were recently invited by Royal Caribbean to board and explore the Spectrum of the Seas as it sailed to Malaysia. In this article, we’ll answer some of your burning questions about cruising from Singapore!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Is a Royal Caribbean cruise expensive?

Not really. Not always. It can be expensive but it can be affordable, too.

The price of the cruise depends on many things: destination, travel dates, number of nights, number of guests, and the accommodation type. Hence, the rates vary greatly.

Let’s talk about travel dates first. If you do a quick search, you’ll find several cruises with the same itinerary (same number of nights and stops) but each sailing’s price is different. It’s very much like booking a flight. But you can easily find budget-friendly dates! Here’s a quick scan I did just now:

Royal-Caribbean-Cruise-Singapore Price 2

As you can see, it’s entirely possible to find affordable sailings, especially if you book in advance. Royal Caribbean has just recently opened their 2023-2024 seasons, so if you search now, there’s a big chance you’ll find reasonable prices.

On the other hand, November, December and January tend to have the steepest rates because they’re around major holidays — Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year! You’ll also notice the big difference between room types.

How much is a Royal Caribbean cruise from Singapore?

The rates vary depending on a number of factors, as mentioned. But here’s an example of an affordable find:

Cheap Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas Singapore Ticket

A 3-night cruise that makes a stop in Penang can cost as low as SGD 767.52 (PHP 30,700) for 2 persons (interior room) for an August 2023 sailing. That’s SGD 383.75 (PHP 15,350) per person . This can go even lower if you’re traveling with seniors, who are eligible for a substantial discount.

I think that’s a fantastic deal considering that it’s inclusive of the following:

  • 3-night accommodations (interior)
  • UNLIMITED meals
  • entertainment (theatre, movies, etc.)
  • access to amenities (pools, some attractions)
  • stop in Malaysia (tour not included)
  • gratuities / tips
  • taxes and fees

In comparison, here’s what 2 travelers would probably spend on a typical DIY land tour in Singapore:

  • SGD 370 (P15,000) – Hotel (3 nights at a typical budget hotel at P5000/night)
  • SGD 200 (P8000) – Food (4 days at SGD 25/person/day)
  • SGD 200 (P8000) – Attractions & incidentals (SGD100 budget/person)
  • SGD 50 (P2000) – Transportation (SG Tourist pass SGD25/person)
  • TOTAL: SGD 820 (P33,200) or SGD 410 (P16,600)

Of course, depending on your travel preferences, your actual costs may be higher or lower than this, but for me, if I’m staying at a proper hotel, this is what I usually spend on a 4D3N Singapore trip.

But as you can see, the difference in expenses isn’t that much. The cruise cost is even lower, and it would also allow you to visit another country!

So for me, if you’re able to snag a good deal, going on a cruise is pretty much like your typical SG trip budget-wise.

Do children and seniors get a discount?

YES, most of the time! Senior guests (55 years old and above) can get a 10% discount off the cruise fare. This is equivalent to around SGD 80 – 120 per room, depending on cabin type.

Royal Caribbean also has several KIDS SAIL FREE promos, which could reduce the cruise fare for 3rd or 4th guests who are 12 years old or below, staying in the same room as the primary guests.

However, these promos are not available year-round and may not apply to certain dates. These discounts also cover the CRUISE FARE only. Taxes and other fees still need to be settled by the guests.

How to book a Royal Caribbean cruise?

For the Philippine market, the most ideal option is via www.cruising.com.ph , managed by the official Royal Caribbean representatives in the country.

Royal Caribbean Philippines Website

What’s great about booking on the official Philippine website is, you automatically get customer service and assistance in case you make a mistake, you wish to change something, or you want to extend payments. Most importantly, you have someone to call and assist you in case of emergency. Having easy access to customer support here in the Philippines is super valuable for two reasons:

  • The travel scene can still be unpredictable these days. Travel requirements and border policies change frequently and quickly. It’s nice to have someone you could turn to in case of urgent matters.
  • Booking and going on a cruise is a little bit complicated. Or at least, more complicated than the usual land tours. There are a lot of moving parts that you need to watch — flight schedules, cruise timings, travel requirements, check-in and boarding processes, activity and dining reservations, shore excursions, etc. Having someone to keep you updated can ensure you have a hassle-free journey.

If you book on the international website, you’re basically on your own (DIY) and should you need further assistance, you need to call their customer service in the United States (US). This happened to my aunt. She mistakenly booked a cabin on a deck and section of the ship that is different and so far away from her companions. She wanted to change rooms, but because she booked via the international website, she had to call the US number.

And if you use our promo code — WORTHIT — you’ll get an additional 5% DISCOUNT on the cruise fare! You can use this on top of any existing promos or discounts.

What are the cabin types available?

The Spectrum of the Seas has four major state room categories. But under each category, not all rooms are created equal. They have different configurations and sizes. But here’s what a quick description of a typical cabin under each category and what sets them apart from each other, sorted from cheapest to most expensive.

Royal Caribbean Room Types

  • Interior Room. No windows. Usually 166 square feet. Some interior rooms have a virtual balcony, which is basically a screen showing some footage of the sea.
  • Ocean View Room. Bigger, usually 182 square feet, and with a large window.
  • Balcony Ocean View Room. Or simply “balcony rooms”. More spacious, usually 198 square feet. The glass wall facing the sea also makes it look bigger. With a spacious balcony. – You’ll also find rooms tagged “ Obstructed Ocean View Balcony “, which refers to those rooms that have a balcony but the view is partially blocked by something. For example, Deck 6 is where the smaller boats are placed, obstructing the view of many of the rooms here. Because of this, obstructed balcony rooms are often cheaper than non-balcony ocean view rooms.
  • Suites. The largest, most luxurious, and most expensive accommodations. They come with a lot of perks, too. Some amenities are open only to suite guests. Here are the different suite types sorted by size and price. – Silver junior suite – Grand suite (1-bedroom) – Owner’s suite – Grand loft suite – Ultimate family suite (a two-level suite that has an indoor slide, an entertainment room, and three bedrooms, good for 11 pax)

Most staterooms (not including suites) can accommodate up to four (4) guests. (I say “most” because some Interior rooms can only host 2-3 pax.) That said, cramping four people in a room doesn’t necessarily give the best value for money. The price difference between booking 2 rooms with 2 guests each and booking 1 room with 4 guests isn’t much.

That’s not surprising given that when you book a cruise, you’re not just paying for a room but also access to endless array of food and amenities. In most instances, pricing is pretty much per person, not per room.

Ocean View Balcony Room Spectrum of the Seas

Which stateroom is the most ideal?

That depends on your personal preferences and budget.

Anything with a view of the ocean — balcony or no balcony — is always a good choice. It gives you some space to breathe. It’s also great if you’re the type who likes admiring the view of the ocean or waking up to a bit of sunshine. If you like taking photographs, the balcony also provides a fantastic vantage point especially when the ship is docked at a port of call. And a window is useful when checking the weather quickly, especially on days that you intend to disembark for a shore excursion.

Penang Malaysia

But if budget is a little tight, an interior stateroom isn’t bad at all. I have tried it before and I didn’t mind that there was no view because I was always outside exploring the other decks anyway. On our most recent cruise, we were assigned a balcony room, but to be completely honest, I didn’t really use it that much other than a couple of occasions when I wanted to take a photo of Penang’s and Singapore’s coasts.

This is probably why I think the obstructed ocean view balcony room can give me the most bang for my buck. I have never really tried it, but I’m guessing since I don’t really mind the view, it can still give me the space of a balcony room at the price of a regular ocean view room. If I would cruise again, this is probably what I would book if the price is much lower.

Spectrum of the Seas Life Boats

If you’re interested in an obstructed ocean view room, it might help to know how much of the view is blocked. It’s not visible on the international website, but it is clearly indicated on cruising.com.ph , allowing you to choose the room with the least obstruction at the same price. Here’s a sample:

Obstructed Ocean View Balcony Room Percentage 2

Needless to say, if you’re going for an obstructed ocean view room, pick one with the least view blockage.

Are meals included?

YES. Each booking comes with access to six (6) complimentary dining options:

  • Main Dining Room , a proper restaurant
  • Windjammer Marketplace , buffet-style
  • Splashaway Café
  • Sorrento’s – Authentic New York Pizzeria
  • The Café @Two70®
  • SeaPlex Dog House , a “food truck” serving tasty hot dogs!

Dining at any of the above is FREE of charge , and you can have as much food as you like. When I like a particular dish, I order another serving. Even at the Main Dining Room, if I like two main dishes, I order both. It’s okay and it’s allowed. You can even ask for items that are not on the current menu. I always order a cheese platter even if it’s not on the menu (LOL).

Because of the sheer diversity of the cuisines that are available for FREE, it is entirely possible to complete the trip without spending anything more on food.

Spectrum of the Seas Restaurant

But if you want to splurge a little, aside from these complimentary food spots, you’ll also find specialty restaurants that incur additional charges, including:

  • Chops Grille , steakhouse
  • Teppanyaki , Japanese food prepared and served by entertaining chefs
  • Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver
  • Wonderland , creative and innovative Alice-in-Wonderland-themed dining
  • La Patisserie , pastries and desserts
  • Chef’s Table
  • Sichuan Red
  • The Hot Pot
  • Leaf & Bean cafe

Teppanyaki Spectrum of the Seas

Room service is also available but a US$7.95 service charge + 18% gratuity applies per stateroom order except for continental breakfast.

What are the attractions on board?

So I asked some of my friends who never considered cruising before: What do you think are in store for you on board? Unsurprisingly, most of them said “eat, drink, and party.” But nothing much other than that. I say “unsurprisingly” because years ago, I thought the same, too! When I was younger, the only mental images of cruising to me were painted by the movies I saw wherein rich retirees just socialize at cocktail parties. LOL.

FlowRider Spectrum of the Seas

But the truth is, boarding a cruise ship is like stepping into another world. There’s just a globe of things to do on board! Competition among cruise lines is intense, so every one is continuously one-upping the others by offering a lot of features, depending on the target market. Royal Caribbean, for example, has been filling their new ships to the brim with fun and exciting amenities. As one of their largest ships, the Spectrum of the Seas has more than its share of thrilling attractions and lifestyle spaces.

Here are some of them:

Spectrum of the Seas Amenities

  • RipCord by iFly , simulated skydiving experience (with extra cost)
  • FlowRider , simulated surfing activity (FREE, but instructor fees apply if you need one)
  • Skypad , bungee trampoline with virtual reality headset (FREE)
  • Rock climbing wall (FREE)
  • Royal Theatre , where musical and other entertaining performances are regularly staged (most shows are FREE)
  • SeaPlex , a sports complex where you can ride bumper cars; play tennis, pingpong and basketball; try archery; and more! (FREE)
  • North Star , a glass-enclosed observation pod and capsule ride that allows a 360-degree view (with extra cost)
  • Swimming pools and whirlpools (FREE)
  • Music hall , with band performances every night (FREE)
  • Star Moment , karaoke! (FREE)
  • Spas and gym (FREE)
  • Video game arcade

We were able to try almost everything on the list and we really had a lot of fun! We were at the Music Hall every night and would spend our high-seas day trying most of the rides and attractions.

SkyPad Trampoline Bungee

And oh, don’t forget to catch at least one of the awesome shows at the Royal Theatre and the Two70 !

Royal Caribbean Theatre

Are there attractions for children/toddlers?

YES. Children have their own swimming area, complete with water slides.

The SeaPlex, a sports complex, composed of game rooms and a lot of kid-friendly attractions like an arcade, video game rooms, archery room, bumper cars, and claw machines.

Kids Swimming Area

Some of the shows at the Royal Theatre are also wholesome, which kids can enjoy.

The Spectrum of the Seas also has a so-called Adventure Ocean program, which is basically a youth club or day care, where children ages 3 to 11 can play with other kids. Parents can drop off their kids here.

Is it senior-friendly?

YES, of course. There’s a reason why most people (mistakenly) assume it’s only for retirees and pensioners — when it comes to travel styles, cruising is a favorite among the elderly!

While the ship is gigantic, it is quite easy to explore. It has at least 16 guest elevators: 10 between the aft (back end) and midship, and another 6 towards the forward section. From here, most key attractions on board are easily accessible.

Cruising for Seniors

For guests with mobility issues, cabins near the elevators can be requested. Some rooms are also especially designed for PWD guests.

Cruising in general is popular among senior travelers because of the sheer convenience. Guests are well taken care of. For example, you never have to carry your luggage. Once you check it, the staff will deliver it to your room. And on the last night, you can leave it in the hallway again for the staff to pick it up. The next time you’ll see it again is once you disembark.

On top of all these, everything you need is on board. You may choose not to explore the stops or ports of call at all and still have a grand time.

What are the usual destinations?

The journey always starts and ends in Singapore. But the usual stops, called ports of call , depend on the number nights.

Spectrum of the Seas Shore Excursions

  • 3 nights: Penang
  • 4 nights: Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur and Penang, OR Penang and Phuket
  • 5 nights: Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur, Penang, AND Phuket

The arrival and departure times vary, but you’ll usually get just a day or half-day at each stop.

The last full day onboard is usually spent at high seas, so you’ll be on the ship the entire time.

How to explore each port of call?

You have the option to book a guided tour from Royal Caribbean called SHOREX (Shore Excursion) or you can explore the destination on your own.

The beauty of joining a shorex is they will be taking care of everything for you, including the transfers to and from the port, but it usually comes with a rigid itinerary.

Spectrum of the Seas Kuala Lumpur Penang

If you want more freedom and flexibility, you can explore independently. But just make sure that you’ll be back to the ship before the set time. You can see the arrival and departure times on the Royal Caribbean app.

Penang and Phuket are quite easy to explore because the pier isn’t too far away from the main points of interest or city center. But Port Klang is tricky because it’s roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur, depending on traffic conditions. This means, you’ll be spending at least 3 hours on the road.

Important! You have to be fully vaccinated to explore ports of call.

Is airfare to Singapore included?

No, it’s not included in the published rates.

Some travel agencies can offer fly-and-cruise packages, but if you’re doing it on your own, you’ll have to book the flight separately.

If budget is an issue, try to search for a week that can give you lower rates for BOTH the cruise AND flights. I know it’s easier said than done, but it is possible. I am able to find some dates that do match, especially when airlines have seat sales.

Airfare is more erratic, so that’s what I usually check first. Don’t book flights yet, just scan. Then, when you find cheap flights to Singapore, search for an affordable cruise. When you find one that matches your flight dates, book the flight and the cruise immediately. Please mind your timings. Take note of the departure and arrival times before finalizing your flight reservation.

How much budget should I prepare for a Royal Caribbean cruise from Singapore?

Again, that depends on a lot of factors especially the room type and travel dates. But let’s say that you’re interested in the cheapest possible option — interior stateroom on a sailing scheduled in an off month a year away. Supposing you’re a couple flying from Manila, here’s how much you are most likely to spend per person:

  • P10,000 – roundtrip Manila-Singapore flight
  • P1620 – Philippine travel tax
  • P2500 – 1 night at a hotel in Singapore (P5000/night divided by 2 pax)
  • P15,350 – Cruise (inclusive of meals)
  • P5,000 – transportation and incidental expenses
  • P34,470 – TOTAL

Let’s round it off to a clean P35,000 .

This is the minimum you can expect to spend. But it’s always wise to add some allowance for other possible expenses. You might find yourself wanting a drink, buy a souvenir, try a specialty restaurant or visit an attraction in your free time in Singapore. Having a wiggle room would allow you to enjoy more!

Of course, if you fail to find flights and sailings at these prices, you’ll end up with a higher total cost, so plan your trip well.

If I test positive for COVID-19 before my cruise schedule, can I rebook? What are my options?

For cruises departing on or before 30 April 2023: If you or any of your traveling party tests positive for COVID-19 within 10 days before your sailing date or at the boarding terminal, 100% of the cruise fare will be refunded.

(As of August 30, 2022)

Is it worth it?

Okay, before anything else, full disclosure: My most recent cruise was sponsored by Royal Caribbean, so I may have biases. But in my honest opinion, sponsored or not, a SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS cruise is worth it! Especially if you’re able to snag promos and low prices!

It’s a travel experience that I could recommend in a heartbeat for families, friends, and couples celebrating a special occasion. When I was on board, I kept thinking about how much my sister and my senior mother would love the experience.

I absolutely enjoyed my stay that I’m already planning to do it again, this time with family. (And yes, I will be shouldering all my expenses this time!)

Where to book?

Star Cruises fleet

Star pisces, review of star cruises.

Star Cruises (starcruises.com/sg/en) is owned by Genting Hong Kong (GHK) and is ranked world's 3rd biggest cruise company, following Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD . The company dominates the Asia-Pacific market and is listed on the Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2015, GHK introduced the corporation's newest cruise line brand - Dream Cruises . The new company started with 2 newbuilds - both top-luxury mega-liners, built specifically for the Asian / Chinese market.

Another large Chinese cruise brand is the new company (2015-founded) Adora Cruises/CSSC Carnival China Cruise Shipping . At the following link can be found listed all CruiseMapper's news related to Star Cruises owner Genting Hong Kong .

IMPORTANT : On January 19, 2022, the parent company GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd (Malaysia) filed for bankruptcy. On Jan 10th, for insolvency filed the two GHK-owned shipbuilding companies in Germany - MV Werften and Lloyd Werft. On Jan 27th, Dream Cruises filed a winding-up petition with the Bermuda Court for liquidation. and the appointment of the provisional liquidators working with GHK.

NEWS : In late-April 2022, was announced that the docked in Malaysia ships Star Pisces (1990-built), SuperStar Gemini (1992) and SuperStar Aquarius (1993) are listed for scrapping and soon to the beached at Alang India . SuperStar Libra (1988) was last AIS reported on April 7th (in Wismar Germany). The three liners' last crew signed off on May 17th, as new/skeleton crew were hired to take them to the scrapyard for dismantling and recycling.

On August 31, 2022, GHK's Star Cruises Asia Holding Ltd announced entering into a SPA/Share Purchase Agreement to sell its wholly-owned Star Market Ltd (100% of its shares) for US$3,5M/RM15,84M to the company Resorts World Inc Pte Ltd. Resorts World is 50-50 owned by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's former Executive Director) and Genting Berhad (Genting Group's parent company, if which Lim Kok Thay holds ~30% shares). Star Market owns trademarks and intellectual property rights.

Company history

The company's introduction on the global cruise shipping market allowed Star Cruises to tap into profitable and more mature markets in Europe and North America. Its services cater to Asian guests, as well as to Europeans, Australians and North Americans, interested in Asian destinations. Star Cruises chairman was Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, son of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong (founder of Genting Highlands, Malaysia).

Genting Star Cruises (Asia) logo

Star Cruises was established as an associate of Genting Group of Malaysia, incorporated on November 10, 1993, in Bermuda, with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China . The first ships of the company were two cruise ferries bought from the bankrupted estate of Swedish Rederi AB Slite. Star Cruises was the world's first major cruise company to recruit Filipinos for its ships.

The company purchased several other used vessels in the following years. In 1998, it took delivery of the first newbuild - SuperStar Leo (now Norwegian Spirit) . Sistership SuperStar Virgo (Explorer Dream/Resorts World One) followed in 1999. The same year Star Cruises acquired Sun Cruises.

In 2000, Star Cruises also acquired NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) , including the subsidiaries "Norwegian Capricorn Line" and "Orient Lines", becoming the biggest global cruise line in the world. Norwegian Capricorn Line's operations were soon merged into Star Cruises. Before the NCL purchase, Star Cruises had several other newbuilds (either under construction or planned), but following the merger, most of them joined NCL's fleet. However, in August 2007, Star Cruises sold 50% of NCL (for USD 1 billion) to Apollo Management, retaining just 28% stake in NCL.

In 2001, Star Cruises founded the sister company "Cruise Ferries", which started operations in July with the passenger ferry Wasa Queen on short itineraries between Hong Kong and Xiamen. These were followed by overnight gambling cruises - roundtrip from Hong Kong and from Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur). Wasa Queen stopped operating and was sold to another company in 2007, and eventually was scrapped in 2013.

The then-largest ship in the fleet - SuperStar Leo - was transferred in 2004 to Norwegian Cruise Line to take over Norwegian Sky voyages. Since 2006, the trend has been that newbuilds were to be constructed for NCL, and the old ships in the Norwegian fleet would be transferred to Star Cruises fleet in Asia.

In 2008, both Orient Lines and NCL America brands were discontinued, with Orient's sole ship, ms Marco Polo, sold to the Greece-based Global Maritime. The same year, the first ship from NCL Norwegian was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises as SuperStar Libra .

In 2011, Star Cruises received a brand new hull art. SuperStar Aquarius , Star Pisces , and SuperStar Virgo won their new attire. On April 27, 2012, it was announced that Norwegian Dream will join Star Cruises fleet and be renamed to SuperStar Gemini starting service in 2012.

On October 7, 2013, Star Cruises announced that together with their parent company, Genting Hong Kong had entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft, Germany for the construction of one new vessel. The vessel will be able to accommodate 3,364 passengers at double occupancy and will be delivered in Fall 2016.

On February 10, 2014, Star Cruises announced that a second ship was ordered and scheduled for delivery by Fall 2017. On February 9, 2015, the first steel cutting ceremony was held for Genting World at Meyer Werft shipyard. Both newbuilds will weigh 150,000 GT.

In May 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed a partnership deal with Wirecard (digital payments / online shop development company) for implementing a fleetwide onboard payment system. The system ("Quick Pay") was first installed on World Dream and Genting Dream, then launched on SuperStar Virgo. "Quick Pay" allows the passenger to be in full control of their onboard money spending - including pre-authorized limits, account management, monitoring, paying the total bill at disembarkation. The technology is based on scanning individual QR codes (during check-in, in staterooms or via the ship's intranet network, then selecting the "Quick Pay" option. Payments can be made via Alipay (Chinese online payment platform) and the credit cards Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, JCB, UnionPay. The mobile app allows passengers to set up pre-authorized amounts for themselves, as well as for friends and family members.

On March 2, 2018, via letters and emails sent to all booked customers, GHK announced that the liner SuperStar Libra ends its passenger shipping operations for Star Cruises on June 27, 2018. Since August 2018, the vessel serves as a hotel ship in Wismar (Germany) for the shipbuilding company MV Werften. SuperStar Libra is permanently docked (moored) at MV Werften Wismar shipyard's quay. Since April 2016, GHK fully owns MV WERFTEN - a new company incorporating the 3 Nordic Yards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - the shipyards in Rostock , Stralsund , and Wismar.

(new) Genting Global-Class cruise ships

On May 10, 2016, the parent company GHK (Genting Hong) signed with Lloyd Werft Group in Wismar Germany a shipbuilding contract for all 10 new cruise vessels . In 2015, GHK purchased a majority stake in Lloyd Werft (dockyard in Bremerhaven Germany ). In 2016, GHK purchased Lloyd Werft's remaining 30%, plus the three shipyards owned by Nordic Yards (Wismar, Warnemunde, Stralsund), thus forming Lloyd Werft Group.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

Of the 10 newbuilds, 6 are riverboats plus 2 ocean-going (all 8 for the GHK's subsidiary Crystal Cruises ) and 2 are mega liners (for Star Cruises and Dream Cruises). The new GHK liners are sisterships of the Global-Class, each with gross tonnage 204,000 GT tons, LOA length 341 m (1120 ft) and passenger capacity 5000 (lower berths). Ship deliveries were scheduled for 2020 (for Dream Cruises) and 2021 (for Star Cruises). The ship-order has optional 2 more vessels of the same class.

Global Class ships feature artificial intelligence technologies (including facial and voice recognition for expedited passenger services - boarding, disembarkation, payments), robots (performing mundane tasks), Cineplex (theme park), Asian spa complex, multiple Asian dining venues (including fast food), both affordable and premium retail shopping facilities, roller coaster, water park (with 5 slides), surf simulator. Staterooms are designed for Asian families and can sleep up to 2-4 persons. Most cabins are with two (split) bathrooms. Each liner has 8 sets of escalators and 28 elevators.

Vessel's waste and water management system was provided by Evac (world's leading company building integrated waste-wastewater-water management systems). The company's Complete Cleantech Solution package includes a vacuum collection system, wastewater treatment plant, dry and wet waste treatment plant, freshwater desalination plants (based on reverse osmosis). The freshwater generation plants have the capacity to produce over 3000 m3 of freshwater per day. The contract with Evac was signed on January 3, 2017.

On January 9, 2017, was signed a contract with ABB for delivery of Azipods (power-propulsion units), automation systems and the marine software for all 5 new Genting cruise ships ordered for both brands - Crystal and Star. The 3x Crystal vessels are from the Crystal Endeavor series (polar-class expedition yachts).

These are the first purpose-built ships for the contemporary Chinese market regarding onboard amenities and services (food, cultural events, shows, enrichment programs, shopping, tours/excursions. Cruise ticket prices will be affordable. In May 2019 were unveiled more Global-Class vessel details. The ships will have industry's first theme park at sea, largest cinema at sea, world's longest roller coaster at sea, self-guided robotic assistants, industry's largest standard staterooms (sized 20 m2), Bluetooth cabin door locks, touch-screen control panel, smartphone-control of different en-suite functions (mood lighting, air-conditioning, etc).

On March 8, 2018, at MV Werften shipyard ( Bremerhaven Germany ) started the construction of the first of the two Global-Class Genting cruise liners.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

The GHK-owned Lloyd Werft Group has the capacity to produce annually 2 mega liners (over 200,000 GT tons each) plus 1 mid-sized vessel (around 50,000 GT tons). Lloyd Werft has 2 new covered drydocks, a new ship launching platform and over 0,5 million m2 of covered fabrication halls.

In December 2018, Genting Cruise Lines announced plans to build smaller-sized (Contemporary-class) ships for Star Cruises from the German shipbuilder MV Werften. The first liner will be delivered in 2023. In 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "Explorer Dream" and transferred to Dream Cruises in April 2019.

Star Cruises shipboard experience

The big appeal to western clients of Star Cruises is that its ships not only take guests around Asia but also let you experience an Asian lifestyle.

"SuperStar" ships were the first to offer the largest number of restaurants afloat. This innovation later passed on to Norwegian's "freestyle dining". SuperStars Virgo and Leo offer Italian, Asian, Japanese and Chinese restaurants. Virgo also has the only Indian restaurant afloat. Naturally, Star Cruises ships offer the usual formal dining room, casual buffets, and poolside grills. All dining venues offer open seating for ultimate flexibility.

Shipboard entertainment features spectacular shows by Chinese acrobats, card rooms (Mah Jong), private rooms for parties, karaoke rooms. Onboard service is friendly, impeccable, discreet. Star Cruises has a no-tipping policy and brags with one of Asian cruising industry's highest crew-to-passenger ratios - one staff member for every two passengers.

Star Cruises predominantly markets Asian travelers. The internationally focused SuperStar Virgo attracted passengers from Japan, Malaysia, Australia New Zealand, as well as adventurous-spirited North Americans and Europeans.

In 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed an agreement with Okinawa Agricultural Cooperatives Association and Leospo Inc. Following the partnership, on select GHK-owned cruise liners is offered Okinawa-sourced food and local produce.

  • The new onboard dining options include the famous Okinawa Wagyu beef and Okinawa Agu pork. The offer is available on select ships and during summer when they cruise to Okinawa.
  • In 2018 (April through November), these premium food specialties were available on three boats (World Dream, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Gemini, SuperStar Virgo). The exclusive gourmet dishes were served via specially designed theme menus. They also included the traditional Japanese dishes Shabu Shabu (with ingredients stirred in cooking pot) and Teppanyaki (iron griddle cooked food), as well as BBQ Okinawa Agu Pork and the wok-fried Okinawa beef (with bitter gourd garlic) and Okinawa beef rib eye (with sweet plum sauce).

Genting fly-cruise deals

In June 2017, Genting Cruise Lines (grouping the companies Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) and Asia's largest airline "China Southern Airlines" signed a Memorandum of Understanding/MoU on an exclusive "flight and cruise" partnership in China.

  • The deal is for discounted fly-cruise deals on cruises leaving from homeport Guangzhou-Nansha - a premium travel hub and cruise homeport in Asia.
  • By this strategic agreement, both China Southern Airlines and Genting combined their resources in sales, marketing, promotions, and product development, creating a competitive travel product by the new "Air+Cruise+Travel" program. The program targets both individual and group travelers.

Free Birthday cruise

Star Cruises offers free Birthday cruise deals on select ships and departure dates. Company's "Free Birthday Celebrant Package" consists of:

  • Cabin decorations (set up on the embarkation day)
  • 0,5 kg chocolate cake
  • Birthday card
  • Cruise voucher (at the ship's Reception) is applicable at onboard retail shops and spa/wellness outlets. To use the voucher, you need to swipe your access card at the outlets. When you settle your bill during checkout, the voucher's value is deducted from the total amount due.
  • Free Wifi vouchers for 2 passengers for the entire cruise (at the ship's Reception). Wi-Fi connections on Start Cruises ships are available in all public areas and in staterooms.

Genting Cruises Private Island Resort

In early November 2017, GHK corporation signed an agreement with the Macleod Island 's owner "Tint Tint Myanmar Group" (headquartered in Yangon Burma ) to jointly built new cruise ship facilities on this private island.

Cruise line private Islands are among the best-known assets of the world's largest cruise shipping companies ( Carnival Corporation , RCCL-Royal Caribbean , NCL , MSC ). However, most such private island resorts are located in the Caribbean.

GHK's partnering with Tint Tint Myanmar Group makes Macleod Island the first Asian private cruise resort destination. It is opened exclusively for Genting cruise ship tourists visiting the island via ships operated by the GHK-owned Dream Cruises and Star Cruises. Among GHK's other Asian projects are Guangzhou-Nansha Port development (in China) and Port Danang (in Vietnam).

Macleod Island was first visited by a Star Cruises ship (SuperStar Libra) on November 3, 2017. The 5-night / 6-day itinerary also included Penang Malaysia  and Phuket Thailand .

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Despite the global Coronavirus crisis , Genting Cruise Lines (shipowner) didn't suspend its fleet's passenger shipping operations. Instead, the company (parent of Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) expanded its cancellation policy with "Cruise As You Wish". It allowed all existing and new bookings made before or on October 30, 2020 (initially July 31), to be canceled penalty-free up to 48 hours (prior departure).

These bookings were fully refunded (100%) via FCC (future cruise credit). With rebooking, the amount of the fare paid is automatically transferred to any Dream Cruises or Star Cruises itinerary starting before or on March 31, 2021 (initially December 31 2020).

Itinerary of Star Cruises

Following on Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit held in Qingdao, Star Cruises celebrated the inaugural cruise of SuperStar Aquarius from her new homeport Qingdao on June 13, 2018. Guests from the Shandong peninsula and neighboring cities are now able to enjoy journeys to Japanese destinations like Beppu , Fukuoka City , Nagasaki , and Sasebo . The flagship SuperStar Virgo also offered Qingdao homeport itineraries (November 2018 through March 2019).

Star Cruises officially set a record number of homeport deployments done by the same brand in Port Qingdao. By homeporting here SuperStar Virgo, the company became the only cruise line in history to have 2 ships homeported in Qingdao during the same year.

While cruising at sea, passengers enjoy a hassle-free experience onboard SuperStar Aquarius, complemented by Asian hospitality and delicacies unique to Star Cruises. The flagship of Star Cruises, SuperStar Virgo, calls Qingdao homeport starting in November 2018, taking passengers on 4-night voyages to Kagoshima , Fukuoka, and Nagasaki.

Note: Starting operations for Dream Cruises in mid-April 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "MS Explorer Dream" and homeported in Shanghai (China). For the winter season 2020, Explorer Dream was deployed in Australia-New Zealand.

Why disney's new cruise liner may be charting the wrong course.

Concept art of the new Disney Adventure, which will have its home port in Singapore

More details about Disney's plans to expand its cruise line into Asia have emerged with an announcement about the entertainment onboard its new ship which will have its home in Singapore when it comes on stream next year.

Named the Disney Adventure, the 208,000-ton ship is one of the world's biggest cruise liners. Disney reportedly bought it for just $44 million in 2022 after its previous owner, Hong Kong-based Genting Cruise Lines, fell into administration. At the time, it was set to accommodate up to 9,000 passengers making it the world's biggest cruise liner by passenger capacity though Disney has since scaled it back to 6,700. Instead of sailing it to the United States to join the six other ships in its fleet, Disney decided to make the Adventure its first cruise liner with a home port in Asia.

As part of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and Singapore Tourism Board, the mega-ship will sail for at least five years from the Marina Bay Cruise Center just a 12 minute drive from Universal Studios Singapore. The location seems like a no-brainer as it brings the fight to the doorstep of Disney's biggest rival, but actually Mickey may be charting the wrong course.

Disney's ships are designed in an Art Deco style to reflect the golden age of cruising but inside they are awash with the kind of fairytale trappings that guests find in its theme parks. Photo opps with cuddly characters are de rigueur, as are Broadway-style extravaganzas based on classic Disney cartoons.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Its latest ship, the Disney Wish, is also home to an interactive dinner show featuring scenes specially-shot by the actors of the wildly-popular Avengers superhero movies. On its top deck there is even an innovative water slide with screens set into the side of the tubes which tell a story about Mickey Mouse whilst riders rocket past on rafts propelled by powerful jets of water.

The Disney Adventure is set to make an even bigger splash as it will have an entire street themed to 2014's animated Oscar-winner Big Hero 6 which was a huge hit in Asia. A poolside retreat will be inspired by another animated favorite – Moana – while shops and restaurants will be based on classic Disney cartoons like The Little Mermaid and Lilo & Stitch . The Avengers will have their own hub.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line. "When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before – and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro and Singapore Tourism Board Chief ... [+] Executive Keith Tan announce the Disney Adventure (Daryl Goh, photographer)

They are the same kind of sentiments that Disney says guests will get from a visit to its theme parks and it's no coincidence. Disney's ships are almost the equivalent of mini theme parks which makes them ideal for locations where the media giant doesn't have an entertainment complex.

Unlike Universal, Disney has repeatedly rejected the opportunity to build inner city Family Entertainment Centers, instead choosing to focus on fewer, much larger, resorts scattered around the world.

There are only six Disney theme park resorts and although this is one more than Universal, its rival is expected to overtake it in the coming years with new outposts in Texas and the United Kingdom. Disney's theme park strategy leaves it under-exposed in a number of major markets including India, Australia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates which is one of the wealthiest untapped areas as we have reported .

In the fall last year, Disney launched its first cruises in Australia where its closest park is a nine and a half hour flight away from the country's biggest city, Sydney. It may seem like the Adventure ship is plugging a similar gap as Disney doesn't have a park in Singapore.

However, Asia is dripping with them. With parks in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo, Disney has more resorts in Asia than in the Americas. All three are within a seven-hour flight from Singapore with Hong Kong less than four hours away which is no bad thing at all.

As we recently reported , when Disney launched its cruise line in 1998, it opened its Castaway Cay private island in the Bahamas at the same time. This enabled it to sell twin-center breaks where stays at Walt Disney World in Orlando are combined with a cruise to Castaway Cay. It sets off from Port Canaveral, just 50 minutes by car from Orlando, with transportation laid on by Disney to make the two destinations seem like they are part of the same vacation.

Thanks to their immersive theming, Disney's cruises are popular with mega-fans as well as families. Many of the former have the biggest budgets and therefore give Disney the greatest gains. So much so indeed that in 2022 its Adventures By Disney tour operator launched a 24-day package visiting every Disney park by private jet for the princely price of $110,000 per person. Despite being in the midst of the pandemic, it sold out so fast that the tour returned the following year at the increased price of $115,000. Yet again it sold out so it is taking place for a third time in 2024.

With three Disney resorts within striking distance of Singapore it seems like a no-brainer to schedule a cruise that takes them all in but, remarkably, this doesn't seem to be on the cards. Disney's announcement makes it clear that the Adventure will sail on cruises for three and four nights from Singapore which is just about enough time to get to Hong Kong but not back. It certainly isn't enough time to take in all three of Disney's Asian resorts which are widely seen to be the jewels in its crown as we have reported .

Disney's cruises do not visit Tokyo DisneySea (Photo by Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images)

It isn't currently even possible to book any Disney cruises to or from Hong Kong, Shanghai or Tokyo despite all three being port cities with the theme parks in the latter located just a 22 minute drive from the terminal. A tour to these parks by ship would take several weeks though people would be prepared to pay a premium as Adventures By Disney has shown.

Disney could claim that this would defeat the object of the Adventure as it wouldn't be visiting untapped areas. However, if that is the driving force behind its location then Singapore isn't the ideal place for its home port as so many Disney parks are within a such a small catchment area.

Just last month, Disney's chief financial officer Hugh Johnston said that "the cruise business, frankly, is one that has an enormous number of opportunities for us" and it seems it hasn't plumbed the depths of all of them yet. The lack of a cruise which takes in all of the Asian resorts is another example of Disney leaving money on the table and it hasn't escaped the attention of other operators.

Testimony to this, cruising giant Holland America Line operates a voyage which visits the cities where all three resorts are located and it has been travelled with this benefit in mind by Disney mega-fans.

As we recently reported , the media giant has also been left in the wake of luxury operator Princess which was the first operator to introduce an on-board wireless guest recognition system even though Disney developed its own technology years earlier for its theme parks.

Likewise, as we also reported , earlier this year Princess swung open the doors to by far the most immersive entertainment experience at sea. Its spooky Spellbound nightspot is the first permanent outpost of Hollywood's exclusive Magic Castle club and it is packed with high-tech trickery. The venue has emerged ahead of a lounge based on Disney's Haunted Mansion theme park attraction which is due to debut on its new Treasure ship in December.

Industry giant Royal Caribbean has also cruised into Disney's waters with ships which are laden with attractions. In January it launched Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise liner which is also home to the Thrill Island water park, the largest at sea. Of course, other operators don't have Disney's characters and theme parks to keep them afloat and that's all the more reason why the Mouse should make the most of them.

On a Royal Caribbean® cruise, you will find seemingly endless opportunities to kick your heels up, tempt your tastebuds and enjoy white-knuckle thrills that leave you craving encores! Whether you are going on a Caribbean cruise, a Mediterranean cruise, a cruise from Australia or any other Royal adventure, our cruise prices include all sorts of fantastic fun—like enjoying most of the ship’s shows and attractions, as well as access to select dining venues. But for more insider tips on how to maximise the value of your voyage, do read on!

1. Tips for finding the best holiday cruise deals.

What could be even sweeter than a Royal Caribbean® cruise? Regardless of your destination, you can score incredible holiday deals on cruise fares, special onboard experiences, shoreside excursions and more. We offer multiple choices of destinations and cruise lengths, beginning with two night getaways from Singapore for a quick reset and refresh. Summer cruises make a big splash with the kiddos, while our far-flung escapes to such destinations as Europe, Australia and the South Pacific will have you exploring the world’s best.

Wonderful deals can be had if your heart is set on one of these destinations. A little flexibility on travel dates, may allow you to save big on suites and balconies. After all, imagine soaking in the sights while sipping morning coffee from the privacy of your own balcony! It takes your cruise experience to another level. To get hooked up, simply sign up for our newsletter and be among the first to know of the latest offers, including flash sales, deals by destination, onboard spending credits and other irresistible deals. Our kids sail free promotion can add up to sizable savings for a family, while sharp discounts on a second fare is the ticket for couples to enjoy a dream get-away together.

2. Should I plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise holiday, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean® often runs early saver deals for guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings, but only if your itinerary hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular getaway dates — like the holidays , spring break , and  summer holidays — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale).

3. How to create your all-inclusive experience.

One of the factors that keeps our guests coming back year after year, is the incredible array of top-notch experiences included in their fare. There are exciting activities for young guests and grown ones; delicious dining ; show-stopping entertainment and heart-racing activities . You can occupy your every waking moment with our complimentary offerings, filling your days with thrills, fun and unforgettable moments! We also offer packages for guests seeking all-inclusive dining and beverage options. Our Specialty Dining Package covers meals at some of the finest restaurants in our fleet, epicurean delights that are a can’t-miss for foodies. And if lounging by the pool means holding something tall, fruity and frosty in your hand, our Specialty Beverage Package may be just the thing. It extends unlimited access to drinks, including alcoholic beverages, freeing you up to simply focus on your tan!

Singapore retains its title as the most expensive city for rich people to live ‘extremely well’ while Hong Kong rises to second place, Julius Baer says

A view of the Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino and the Merlion statue in Singapore.

Singapore is the most expensive city in the world for rich people to live the good life for the second year in a row, according to the Swiss private bank Julius Baer. The bank’s Global Wealth and Lifestyle report is designed to capture the “cost of living extremely well” in cities around the world.

The Chinese city of Hong Kong is now the world’s second most expensive city, up one spot from last year.

Yet other Asian cities dropped down in the rankings. Shanghai, previously in second place, dropped to fourth. Taipei, ranked in eighth place last year, dropped out of the top 10 entirely. Tokyo fell to 23rd place, from 15th place in 2023.

Instead, European cities made up the bulk of the top ten. Milan, Zurich, and Paris broke into this year’s top 10.

Currency fluctuations are a major reason for changes on the list, Julius Baer explains in its report. The U.S.’s higher interest rates are putting pressure on many Asian currencies, sending them to record lows against the U.S. dollar.

“We tend to forget that the costs of living look completely different in the eyes of a stranger, especially if that person thinks in U.S. dollars or Swiss francs,” Christian Gattiker, head of research at Julius Baer, says.

What makes Singapore number one?

Singapore’s status as an “important regional and global hub” is due to positive factors like stable politics, good health care, low crime, and excellent public transport, Julius Baer suggests in its report. Singapore’s government is also trying to attract global businesses and wealthy individuals.

The city-state is the world’s most expensive place to own a car, due to rules requiring owners to buy a “certificate of entitlement.”

Singapore relaxed its pandemic restrictions earlier than Hong Kong and several other Asian cities, and thus saw an influx of wealthy migrants. That sparked a surge in home prices , which are still rising despite the government’s efforts to cool down the property market.

Another area where new wealthy migrants led to increasing costs: the island’s premier golf clubs. Between 2019 and 2022, a foreigner’s membership for the Sentosa Golf Club, a 36-hole course that overlooks the Singapore straits, more than doubled to hit 880,000 Singapore dollars ($650,000).
