Verona, the most romantic city in Italy, by bike
Verona is a city on a human scale and almost all the main sites of historical and artistic interest are located within a few meters from each other. That’s why visiting Verona by bike , perhaps accompanied by a local guide who will tell you unpublished details about monuments and buildings, reveal curiosities and anecdotes and help you to immerse yourself in the spirit of the city, can be really interesting. Cycling is a great way to get around quickly , discover even the most distant monuments and can be an original experience for the whole family, perfect even for those traveling with children . So why not set off?
An ideal bike tour starts from Piazza Bra , to admire from the outside the Arena , one of the most famous Roman amphitheaters in Italy, where world-famous artists still perform, in an absolutely magical atmosphere. Continue towards Via Cappello and the unmissable Juliet’s house , to take a look at the famous bronze statue and the iconic balcony, and then head towards the adjacent Piazza dei Signori and the Arche Scaligere , a monumental funerary complex in Gothic style. So, why not stop in the charming Piazza delle Erbe , where you can admire the Renaissance buildings, do a little shopping among the souvenir stalls and maybe treat yourself to a cappuccino or a spritz, depending on the time of day? From here, through the narrow streets of the historic center, you can head towards the Adige River , to stop in Piazzetta Bra’ dei Molinari and enjoy the spectacular view of the river and the hills, and take the picturesque street of Ponte Pietra , with its delightful little stores , bars and typical restaurants . After taking a look at Ponte Pietra, the oldest bridge in Verona , the only one left from the Roman era, you will reach the Duomo , the main place of Catholic worship in the city, whose official name is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta . After passing Castelvecchio , a medieval fortress that houses an important art collection, you can head towards one of the oldest quarters of the city, to admire the splendid Romanesque basilica of San Zeno Maggiore , which houses a masterpiece by Mantegna , the Dead Christ .
But the wonders of Verona are not yet finished: crossing the medieval bridge of Castelvecchio, with its battlements and towers, we pass on the left bank of the Adige, where two other unmissable sites await us: the Roman Theater and Castel San Pietro . The first is an amphitheater dating back to the first century B.C., perched on the side of San Pietro hill, where theatrical performances and events are still held today. At the time of its greatest splendor, the theater included a series of spectacular terraces on different levels , which ended right in the esplanade that today houses Castel San Pietro, the last stop on this ideal tour of the city. You can get there directly by climbing the staircase that unravels next to the remains of the theater, but eventually, also with a comfortable funicular or with the normal road. Once you get to the top, besides admiring the massive fortress , built for military purposes between 1852 and 1858, on the ruins of a pre-existing 14th-century castle, you can’t help but be enchanted by the splendid panoramic view of the entire city in front of you. If you can, plan your itinerary so that you are here at sunset : it will be easy for you to understand why Verona is considered the most romantic city in Italy.

About this trip
Eurovelo 7 goes from the north cape to malta. we ride it here from verona to bologna so to visit extraordinary unesco heritage cities (verona, mantua, bologna) and have the chance to slowly discover often unrecognized territories: the po valley countryside reshaped by the hand of man, with its artistic and food&wine heritage. starting in verona, we head west, stop in peschiera del garda, continue along the green mincio river bike path to mantua. we meet then po and secchia rivers, before intercepting the bicycle path on the old disused railway that from mirandola has us pedaling safely to osteria nuova. the last stretch to get to our destination is a bit more complex, but great will be the satisfaction of arriving at piazza maggiore, the heart of bologna, what’s included.

Available options
Individual arrival in Verona.
6 PM Bike fitting at Itinera Bike shop, if included.
Overnight in Verona.
We leave Verona cycling first on the bike path along the Biffis Canal and then through vineyards and olive groves inland from Lake Garda on low-traffic roads to Peschiera del Garda.
Look for a beach or visit the Peschiera Fortress, the impressive 19th-century defensive work of the Habsburg Quadrilateral.
Overnight in Peschiera del Garda.
We take the quiet Mincio Cycle Path that follows the placid, emerald-green flow of the Mincio.
The first stop may be Borghetto sul Mincio, a few houses and many mills on the river, an ancient place with a special charm, above which stands the beautiful medieval castle of Valeggio sul Mincio, with its swallow-tailed Ghibelline battlements.
The stage destination is Mantua, a charming medieval city surrounded by three lakes. The arrival between Lago Superiore and Lago di Mezzo is striking and even more so in summer with the blossoming of the Lotus flowers.
Overnight in Mantua.
From Mantua, we shortly plunge into the countryside, among canals and cultivated fields, pedaling along the Mincio River to Governolo, which was a fortified village with a castle, later destroyed. Now the partially buried waterworks, a tower with a clock and a few houses remain. On the next stretch we skirt the Po, the longest river in Italy, with a wide basin, now partly sandy because of widespread drought. Our stop is Ostiglia, a simple, hard-working town that grew up along the river. To relax, a dip in the hotel pool awaits us.
Overnight in Ostiglia.
Crossing the bridge over the Po, we find the town of Revere, admire the Ducal Palace with its tower and then resume the road westward along the P embankment, high above the surrounding countryside.
We soon leave the Po and descend to skirt the winding course of the Secchia River. Along the river we find Concordia sulla Secchia, the first municipality in the Emilian area. Passing through the streets of the center we can still see the wounds inflicted by the 2012 earthquake.
We now head into the countryside surrounding Mirandola, the birthplace of Giovanni Pico dei Conti della Mirandola, a 15th-century Italian philosopher. The town still retains its original octagonal plan and welcomes us with a large square, the Pico family’s beautiful medieval castle, and a small but lively historic center.
Overnight stay in Mirandola.
Shortly after the center of Mirandola, we come to the section of the Ciclovia del Sole recently built on decommissioned railroad tracks. The route runs alongside the active railroad of the Brenner-Bologna line.
We meet San Felice sul Panaro with the beautiful Rocca Estense (a brick castle with Ghibelline battlements), cross Crevalcore passing through the long porticoes, characteristic of Emilian cities, and arrive in San Giovanni in Persiceto, which surprises us with unexpected attractions: from the Museum of Physics, to the small squares with splendid murals, to the very ancient history of Carnival, traces of which we can find scattered throughout the town.
Overnight in San Giovanni in Persiceto.
Just a few kilometers separate us from Osteria Nuova where we leave the bike path on the former railroad track and a somewhat convoluted route awaits us to safely enter the great city of Bologna, jokingly defined in three words: the learned, the red, and the fat. It is the rich city of a thousand porticoes, soaring towers, ancient university, renowned and tasty cuisine, and so much more to see.
In Piazza Nettuno, which with Piazza Maggiore represents the center of the city, we are expected to arrive at the Bologna Welcome Info Point. We can safely leave our bicycles here for a walking tour of the historic center and to take advantage of a free visit to the Clock Tower, which allows us to admire the city from above.
We pick up our bicycles to arrive at our accommodation in Bologna, a modern hostel with a youthful atmosphere.
Breakfast, check out and end of the services. Arrivederci !

Welcome to the Veneto
Your guides will meet you in Verona, and then we’re off to the fairytale village of Borghetto on the banks of the Mincio River. Enjoy a welcome lunch and get fitted for your bike before we take off on a warmup ride to the fortified village of Castellaro. This tiny lakeside hamlet is listed as one of Italy’s Borghi piu Belli (most beautiful villages). Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Borghetto’s boutiques and footbridges, relaxing at our hotel, or enjoying a longer ride. Tonight, we’ll taste the Veneto’s best pumpkin tortelli —the hand-stuffed pasta that’s a regional specialty—on the riverside terrace of our favorite local restaurant.
Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Borghetto sul Mincio, Custoza, Santa Lucia Accomplished: 14 miles / 23 km, elevation gain: 650 feet / 198 meters Longer Option: 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 1,568 feet / 478 meters Accommodations: Regia Rosetta
Renaissance Mantua
Breakfast awaits as you wake to the peace and quiet of the Veronese countryside. Today, we follow the winding course of the river through this famously fertile land to reach Mantua, home to one of Italy’s greatest concentrations of Renaissance art. Explore the Renaissance architecture of the town before enjoying lunch at our favorite osteria off the main square. After lunch, opt to complete the ride back to the hotel or take a lift in the van to a local water park and spend the afternoon riding waterslides with the locals. Tonight, our chef friend Serena will show us true Italian hospitality as we make pasta and laughter at a cooking class that feels more like a dinner party.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Mantua, Goito, Falzoni Accomplished : 21 miles / 34 km, elevation gain: 338 feet / 103 meters Longer Option: 41 miles / 66 km, elevation gain: 774 feet / 236 meters Accommodations: Regia Rosetta
Exploring Monte Baldo
Leave the bikes behind and hop in the van for a 45-minute transfer—today we’re making our way to Monte Baldo, the huge massif dominating the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Meet a local mountain guide for a canyoning trip; sliding, rappelling, and jumping down a series of waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain pools. Or, if heights aren’t your thing, opt for a hike along one of Europe’s most scenic footpaths with 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. We’ll stop for lunch in a typical mountain hut or historic castle before shuttling down to the lakeside town of Riva del Garda, then reward yourself with an afternoon of relaxing on the sunny shores and swimming in Italy’s largest lake.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Monte Baldo, Riva del Garda Accomplished : 3-4 hours hiking and/or canyoning Accommodations: Hotel du Lac et du Parc
Via Ferrata
Today we’ll venture into the mountains north of Lake Garda to try our hand at via ferrata. This form of Italian mountaineering combines hiking and rock climbing and can be adapted for all levels of explorers. Take an optional ride around the clear waters of Lake Cavedine and scramble up to the heights above Arco for breathtaking views of the lake and mountains below. Cool off with a dip in the river or dare to dive in from the old Roman bridge. This evening, visit a mountainside farmhouse that produces its own olive oil, vegetables, fruit, and meats for a truly remarkable dinner.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Lake Garda, Tenno, Arco Accomplished : 3-4 hours hiking; rock climbing; swimming Accommodations: Hotel du Lac et du Parc
The Lessini Mountains
Get an early start and transfer to the tranquil Lessini Mountains, where we’ll hike to the well-preserved WWI trenches scattered across the plateau. These high pastures are the summer home for herds of cows who produce the local cheeses. We’ll inevitably encounter these ladies during our gradually descending ride along the ridgelines of the Valpolicella—and sample their cheese a little later, too. A picnic lunch is served at a local farmhouse, then pedal on through vineyards to the valley floor. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the hotel pool before enjoying dinner and gelato in Verona.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Lessini Mountains, San Rocco, Verona Accomplished: 29 miles / 47 km, elevation gain: 656 feet / 200 meters Shorter Option : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 610 feet / 186 meters Accommodations: Relais Fra Lorenzo
