My night started out when doors opened at 8:30 cause it didn't say when the performance would begin. I don't attend many live performances but after finding the song Paris by Black Atlass I wanted to hear more! My only regret is not keeping track of the set list so I could create a Spotify playlist afterwards! I'm obsessed and can't wait till he returns to LA! I will go to all of his performances!

Alexander Fleming debuted as Black Atlass in 2013 with "Paris," a single that hinted at his range by featuring an acoustic piano version along with the original electronic mix. He appeared on Action Bronson's Top Ten album "Mr. Wonderful" in 2015 and issued his first full length, "Haunted Paradise" in 2016. Fleming signed with The Weeknd's XO Records in 2018. That year, he appeared on the "Fifty Shades Freed" soundtrack with his and Jessie Reyez's "Sacrifice," a song that quickly racked up tens of millions of streams. In 2018 he also released his first studio album "Pain & Pleasure" which was nominated for R&B/Soul Recording Of The Year at the 2019 Juno Awards. 2020 saw the release of his second studio album "Dream Awake." In 2022 Fleming released his latest album "Infinite" under his own label Black Atlass Inc.

Artist of the Week: Black Atlass

When Alex Fleming (and his elegantly slicked-back hair) crosses the room, sits down at the shiny black Yamaha piano, tosses his head back, and begins to dance his fingers across the ivories, you’d never guess that within a few measures would emerge a speaker-shaking bass line and syncopated hi-hat beat. But the nineteen-year-old Ontario musician who performs as Black Atlass melds it all together so well that, once they do emerge, it sounds like the most natural thing in the world. And that’s his intention.

“I wanted to clash elegant-sounding piano and vocal melodies with large-sounding gritty synths, hip-hop–inspired drums, and R&B–themed lyrics,” he says. “The reason it flows so naturally is because I was creating from my subconscious. It’s a hard thing to describe, but when you really love and are really passionate about something … it’s almost as though you don’t have a choice and you don’t even realize it.”

He describes the musical path he’s taken as the natural progression leading from his parents’ eclectic taste in music. “I think back on myself listening to artists like Lou Reed, Radiohead, and John Lennon when I was twelve years old,” he says. “It’s pretty funny. I realized that [only] two or three other kids in my entire school had any idea what I was listening to.”

The EP containing “Paris,” the song in the video below, came out a few days ago on Fools Gold, but Fleming has been touring for less than a year and has already caught the attention of the fashion world—Montreal high-end boutique SSENSE styled the video (Fleming posted behind-the-scenes shots of Saint Laurent packaging on his Tumblr). And last year, Louis Vuitton used the track to score a film celebrating their exhibit at the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs.

Right now, Fleming is back at work on the next Black Atlass release, which is currently planned for the fall.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Greathouse Visitor Center is open on Monday May 27th, 10am-4pm.  Mine tours will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis with the following schedule:

• 3-3:30pm: Coal Mine Experience Tour ($3/person)

Greathouse Visitor Center and Mine Tours

Greathouse Visitor Center  reopens and resumes regular schedule on Sunday May 5. Mine Tours will resume on Saturday May 18.   Advance registration recommended. Registration opens on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Register by phone or online HERE . Updated May 21, 2024.

The East Bay Regional Park District began acquiring land for Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in the early 1970s. Today, most of the mining district is within the Preserve's nearly 8,533 acres. The area is an ideal location for hiking, picnicking and nature study. Naturalists conduct a variety of programs relating the Preserve's natural and historic resources. The Greathouse Visitor Center is located ¼ mile past the upper parking lot along a partially paved, partially gravel trail with some incline. If you would like to request an accommodation to access the Visitor Center, experience exhibits and videos, shop in the gift store, or participate in a mine tour, please call ahead at  (510) 544-2750 . Please give at least 1-week advanced notice for accommodation requests. The Greathouse Visitor Center is wheelchair accessible. There are also ADA-accessible restrooms and an accessible water fountain in the upper parking lot.

Rose Hill Cemetery

Although little remains of the coal mining communities, a historic cemetery serves as a monument to the lives of the former residents. Buried here are children who died in epidemics, women who died in childbirth, and men who died in mining disasters and of other things. Although over 10 nationalities resided in the mining area, Rose Hill Cemetery was a Protestant burial ground, and many of the people buried here were Welsh.

Over the years, vandalism has taken its toll on the cemetery, which the Park District is attempting to restore. If you have information concerning people buried here or the location of missing gravestones, please call the Black Diamond office at  (510) 544-2750 .

Greathouse Visitor Center

Reopens on sunday may 5th, 2024.

The Greathouse Visitor Center is located in an underground chamber excavated in the mid-1920s. View the workings of a 20th-century sand mine and learn about the lives of 19th-century coal and 20th-century sand miners. The center contains displays, photographs, and artifacts related to the park’s coal and sand mining eras.

Admission is free. Parking fee is $5 per vehicle on weekends and holidays, when the kiosk is attended (Visa/Master Card, cash or check only). For more information, call  (510) 544-2750 . Please note that while dogs on leash are allowed in the Greathouse Visitor Center, they are not permitted on Mine Tours.

Coal Mine Experience Tour

Tours will resume on saturday may 18th, 2024.

Tour the new Coal Mine Experience exhibit to immerse yourself in the history of the Mount Diablo Coal Field. Discover the story of miners who toiled underground as you experience a replica coal mine. We'll discuss the dangers of working deep in the layers of the earth and explore the area's fascinating geology. For safety reasons, you may tour the mine only as part of a guided tour and all participants must be at least seven years old . 30 minute Coal Mine Experience tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays (Year Round). Advanced reservations highly recommended. Tour groups are limited to 15 people and meet outside the Greathouse Visitor Center.

Tour route is flat along hard packed dirt. Total tour length is approx. ¼ mile (plus the distance to and from the Greathouse Visitor Center).

Hazel-Atlas Mine Tour

From the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s, the Hazel-Atlas Mine produced silica sand to make jars, bottles, and other glass items. Today, tour participants can take a 1309-foot walk into the mine to see mine workings, ore chutes, the shifter's office, and ancient geological features. For safety reasons, you may tour the mine only as part of a guided tour and all participants must be at least seven years old .

1 hour Hazel Atlas Mine Tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays (Year Round). Advanced reservations highly recommended. Tour groups are limited to 15 people and meet outside the Greathouse Visitor Center.

Tour route includes some mild incline and uneven terrain caused by underground railroad tracks that run the entire length of the tour. Total tour length is approx. ½ mile (plus the distance to and from the Greathouse Visitor Center).

Black Diamond Mining History Tour

Beneath these hills is a history of industry, innovation, and perseverance. Join us as we explore both eras of mining that occurred here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Participants will tour both the Coal Mine Experience and the Hazel Atlas Mine. For safety reasons, you may tour the mine only as part of a guided tour and all participants must be at least seven years old .

1.5 hour Black Diamond Mining History Tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays (Year Round). Advanced reservations highly recommended. Tour groups are limited to 15 and meet outside the Greathouse Visitor Center.

This tour is a combined tour of the Hazel Atlas Mine Tour and the Coal Mine Experience tour. Half of the tour is along flat, hard packed dirt. The other half includes some mild incline and uneven terrain caused by underground railroad tracks. Total tour length is approx. ¾ mile (plus the distance to and from the Greathouse Visitor Center).

Natural Features

Vegetation:  The Preserve's 65 miles of trails traverse areas of grassland, foothill woodland, mixed evergreen forest, chaparral, stream vegetation and exotic plantings. Notable among the latter are several tree species introduced by the coal miners. These include the black locust, pepper tree, almond, eucalyptus and tree of heaven.

Black Diamond is noted as the northernmost location of Coulter pine, black sage, desert olive, and dudleya. In addition, several species that are restricted to the Mt. Diablo area occur here, including the Mt. Diablo globe lily, Mt. Diablo helianthella and Mt. Diablo manzanita. In the springtime, the hills are covered with some of the most remarkable wildflower displays in the Bay Area.

Wildlife:  Black Diamond supports a healthy wildlife population. Coyotes and snakes are commonly seen. Mountain lions, bobcats, foxes and deer are occasionally spotted, while birds of prey soar overhead. Over 100 species of birds have been seen, from the rare golden eagle to the ever-present meadowlark.

The side-blotched lizard has its northern limit in the Preserve, and one rare animal species has been found here, the Alameda whipsnake.

There are two camping areas in Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. For more information visit the Camping page. Reservations are required for both--call 1-888-EBPARKS ( 1-888-327-2757 ).

Star Mine Group Camp Area  is available all year for organized, educational groups only. It can accommodate up to 35 people. It is located in a grassland/oak woodland community at the eastern edge of the Preserve. Overnight camping is limited to two nights. Parking (maximum eight cars), picnic tables and a pit toilet are available at the site. Campers must bring in their own water and haul out their own garbage. No water is available at the site. Camping reservations must be made at least ten (10) days in advance.

Stewartville Backpack Camp  is for the general public. The fee is $5 per night per person. Camping is limited to two nights during the spring, summer, and fall. There is room for 20 campers. Picnic tables and a pit toilet are available, as well as water for horses (the water is non-potable and must be filtered or treated for human consumption). The camp is located near the junction of Stewartville and Upper Oil Canyon trails, 3.2 miles from the Preserve headquarters parking lot. Camping reservations must be made at least five (5) days in advance.

Celebrating Pride at Black Diamond Mines

Springtime snakes, bees, bats, and butterflies, oh my, mini miners, rattlesnake appreciation hike.

Native Americans have lived in the greater Bay Area for thousands of years. Black Diamond was located in the backcountry between three tribes: Chupcan (Concord), Volvon (Clayton) and Ompin (Pittsburg). All three nations spoke the Bay Miwok language. With the arrival of Spanish, Mexican and American settlers after 1772, the Bay Miwok way of life changed rapidly.

Until the discovery of coal, cattle ranching was the major industry in this area. After the mines closed, some miners found a new career in ranching. Abandoned mining town buildings became barns, railroad ties were used as fence posts, and boilers were converted into water troughs. Descendants of original mining families still graze cattle in the Preserve.

Coal Mining

From the 1860s through the turn of the last century, five coal mining towns thrived in the Black Diamond area: Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley, and Judsonville. As the location of California's largest coal mining operation, nearly four million tons of coal ("black diamonds") were removed from the earth. The residents of the mining towns were from all over the world, and their life was characterized by hard work and long hours. Occasional celebrations and a variety of organizations and social activities served to alleviate the drudgery of daily existence.

The coal mines had a significant impact on California's economy. By the time operations ceased due to rising production costs and the exploitation of new energy sources, much of California's economy had been transformed from a rural to an industrial base.

Sand Mining

In the 1920s underground mining for sand began near the deserted Nortonville and Somersville townsites. The Somersville mine supplied sand used in glass making by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company in Oakland, while the Nortonville mine supplied the Columbia Steel Works with foundry (casting) sand. Competition from Belgian glass and the closing of the steel foundry ended the sand mining by 1949. Altogether, more than 1.8 million tons of sand had been mined.

Jennifer Lopez Continues ‘Atlas’ Press Tour in Mexico Without Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez is continuing the press tour for her new film Atlas without husband Ben Affleck at her side.

After walking the red carpet solo at the sci-fi film’s Monday, May 20, premiere in Los Angeles, Lopez, 54, is now in Mexico, a source confirms to Us Weekly . She has Atlas press events and interviews scheduled for her trip. Affleck, meanwhile, is currently filming his upcoming sequel The Accountant 2 .

Speculation about Lopez and Affleck’s status began to swirl earlier this month when Lopez attended the 2024 Met Gala solo after more than a month of stepping out without Affleck, 51. A second source subsequently told Us that the twosome “are having issues” in their marriage.

“They started having issues a few months ago as Jen had started ramping up work commitments and prepping for her tour,” the insider explained. “Jen is very focused on work. They are on two completely different pages most of the time.”

Lopez will knick off her This Is Me … Live tour next month in Orlando. She released her ninth album, This Is Me … Now , in February. The record was accompanied by a film titled This Is Me … Now: A Love Story .

Despite her busy work schedule, Lopez made time for an outing with Affleck earlier this week. In photos obtained by In Touch , Lopez smiled as she got into a car with Affleck on Thursday, May 16. The outing in Los Angeles marked the couple’s first time being photographed together in 47 days.

Lopez and Affleck’s recent relationship woes are the latest chapter in their long history together. They first began dating in the early 2000s after meeting on the set of their film Gigli . The duo got engaged in November 2002, but called off the wedding and split in January 2004.

Lopez and Affleck both went on to welcome children with other people after their breakup; Lopez shares twins Emme and Max, 16, with ex-husband Marc Anthony while Affleck shares Violet, 18, Fin, 15, and Samuel, 12, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner .

After their respective divorces from Anthony, 55, and Garner, 52, Lopez and Affleck reconnected in 2021. They tied the knot in July 2022 during a trip to Las Vegas and celebrated with a larger ceremony in Georgia one month later.

As they work on the issues in their marriage, Lopez and Affleck are currently living apart, the second source told Us . Lopez recently looked at a home in L.A. that she plans on buying as an investment property while Affleck has been staying in L.A., but not at the couple’s home. The insider added that Lopez and Affleck have no plans to separate despite their current living situation.

Atlas hits theaters on Friday, May 24.

Why Ben Affleck skipped Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Atlas’ premiere amid rumored marriage woes

The spotlight is on Bennifer.

As the negative rumors about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage continue to mount, the singer had the premiere for her new sci-fi Netflix movie, “Atlas,” on Monday night — and her husband wasn’t there.

Lopez, 54, arrived to the red carpet event all on her own. However, she made sure to accessorize with a wedding band for her outing.

The “Let’s Get Loud” singer wore a black-and-white ensemble for the glitzy Los Angeles event.

She was seen posing for photos solo, before joining co-stars Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown and the Netflix film’s director, Brad Peyton, on the carpet. Per People , Affleck reportedly wasn’t in attendance because he’s busy filming “The Accountant 2.” He was photographed on the LA set on the same day.

Lopez and Affleck have been the subject of breakup rumors since last week.

It all started when Lopez attended the 2024 Met Gala solo . Then, it was reported that  Affleck is staying at a separate house from Lopez , who was seen house hunting without her husband.

On May 15, InTouch reported  that Lopez and Affleck are in therapy to work on their marital issues.

“Ben believes in therapy, to a point, and is willing to be a good sport about participating with an open mind, even though he hates the whole humiliating process,” a source told the outlet.

To add fuel to the fire, the “Hustlers” actress  “liked” an Instagram post  detailing the qualities of a partner that could  lead to an unhealthy relationship .

The post explained that “you cannot build a healthy relationship with somebody” who “lacks integrity and emotional safety,” “doesn’t respect your time,” lacks “communication skills” and doesn’t have a strong sense of self.

On May 16, the A-listers were spotted in public together for the first time in 47 days.

They arrived separately at an event for one of their kids in Los Angeles, but they both had their wedding rings on.

Before that, the pair hadn’t been photographed together since March.

Page Six reported on Monday that Affleck has “come to his senses” about his failing marriage Lopez.

An insider said: “If there was a way to divorce on grounds of temporary insanity, he would. He feels like the last two years was just a fever dream, and he’s come to his senses now and understands there is just no way this is going to work.”

Affleck and Lopez were initially together in the early 2000s. They ended their engagement in 2004, and went on to marry and have kids with other people — respectively, Jennifer Garner and Marc Anthony. 

But the stars rekindled their flame in 2021, and tied the knot in 2022. They share a  blended family of five kids .

JoJo Siwa revealed she was “punched in the eye” while celebrating her 21st birthday.

The “Karma” singer took to TikTok to detail her shenanigans in a video that showed her in a kitchen filled with bottles of liquor.

“It’s my 21st birthday,” she said in the clip. “I’m drunk as f–k right now!”

Siwa briefly paused as several pieces of bread were tossed at her while her friends giggled in the background.

“Bread I’m supposed to eat,” she explained as she picked up one from the floor.

The “Dance Moms” alum then moved closer to the camera to show off her swollen eye, saying, “I got punched in the eye. It hurts really bad, but I’m OK.”

Backing away, she then mouthed, “I’m not OK.” However, she didn’t reveal how she got the injury.

She styled her blond locks in a faux hawk hairstyle and wore black paint on her face.

The singer debuted her “black beast look” shortly after turning heads when she wore a nude skin-tight catsuit in the music video for her single “Karma.”

Some say that age is just a number. But age 65 carries some added significance. After all, it’s usually when social security kicks in. But lately, on the PGA Tour, it’s also the age for one last send off against the flat bellies.

As a testament to his career, Black Desert has presented local legendary professional Jay Don Blake, who will turn 66 on Oct. 28, with an exemption to compete at the inaugural Black Desert Championship this fall, according to a press release. The tournament, which will be held Oct. 9-13, will mark Blake’s 500th career Tour event in his hometown of St. George, Utah.

Blake’s exemption comes not long after Russ Cochran, who is three days younger than Blake, teed it up for his 600 th career start at the Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Cochran was invited to play in the team event as the partner to reigning Tour Rookie of the Year Eric Cole. They nearly made the cut despite Cochran making his first start since the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii. Cochran’s son, Reed, also serves as Cole’s caddie.

Black Desert Managing Partner Patrick Manning surprised Blake and his wife, Marcie, who was his caddie for over a decade on the Champions Tour, with the exemption less than two weeks ago on Black Desert’s 19-hole course. Blake was also met by 18 family members on the green, including all his children and grandkids.

“As soon as we announced the Black Desert Championship and the PGA’s return to Utah, we knew we had to get to work,” said Manning. “With Jay being born and raised in St. George and 499 Tour starts, we knew what a special moment we could create to help him reach 500. This has been a work in progress for about a year, getting approval from the PGA (Tour) about two weeks ago.”

Blake was inducted into Utah State University’s Hall of Fame in 1991. During his collegiate career, he won the 1980 NCAA Golf Championship, followed by a second-place finish the following year. Blake, a two-time All-American, was also named the Collegiate Player of the Year in 1981.

Blake earned his card 43 years ago, making his first Tour start six years later in 1987. His best year came in 1991, with his lone Tour win at the Shearson Lehman Brothers Open, five other top-10 finishes and a top-30 money list placing. He also led the Tour in putting in 1991. Blake, who earned more than $5 million during his Tour career, went on to win three time on the senior circuit and $10 million overall. He most recently played in the Tour’s 2018 Barracuda Championship and competed in two PGA Tour Champions events last season. He last broke 70 at a Champions Tour event at the 2018 Sanford International.

“We know our community is eagerly anticipating Blake’s performance in this year’s event,” said Manning. “The opportunity to watch our hometown hero mark yet another chapter in his career is what Black Desert is all about, making remarkable within reach.”

The Black Desert Championship, which will be part of the FedEx Cup Fall series, will mark the first PGA Tour event contested in Utah in more than 60 years.

Played against the backdrop of southern Utah’s red rock mountains, the par-72 Black Desert Golf Course was designed by Phil Smith and the late Tom Weiskopf, the final design from the World Golf Hall of Fame 2024 inductee.
