CONCERT REVIEW: BRET MICHAELS’ Parti-Gras 2023 Tour: All Killer Hits No Filler at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, NJ (July 23rd, 2023)

bret michaels tour review

If Bret Michaels ‘ is on stage, you can be sure it will be a Rock & Roll Party party! Bret and his band are taking Jefferson Star and Night Ranger across America with his 2023 Parti-Gras Tour . Joining Bret during his set is Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray and Steve Augeri , formerly of Journey , performing some of their band’s signature songs. Together they delivered all killer hits, no filler! The Rock & Roll party rolled into Camden, NJ, at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion , so leave your troubles in the parking lot and join the party. Bret will be your party host and ringleader like no other for the evening.

The Bret Michael Band [ BMB ] played all of Poison ‘s biggest hits like they were all reborn. They captured the energy, fun, and spirit in which they were written decades ago. His outrageous glam look from the 80s is long gone and replaced with more straightforward black jeans, ripped t-shirts, and cowboy boots. Don’t let this look fool you; he still wears his signature bandana. He also hasn’t slowed down a nanosecond and can still easily deliver a high-octane show.

Bret sang and ran the stage in the sweltering heat while high-fiving fans in the front row and the catwalk continuously. He told the crowd, “It’s your party New Jersey; let’s have some fun!” and then turned up the charm by throwing out smiles and winks to all the ladies. He looked like he was having just as much fun as his fans and infused all his songs with the spirit of a good time.

Steve Augeri came out to sing “Separate Way,” Don’t Stop Believin,” and “Any Way You Want It,” while Mark McGrath performed “Every Morning” and “Fly” with Bret ‘s band. They both sang with heart and soul while intermixed with Poison ‘s songs.

All band members entertained the crowd from every part of the stage on every song. Pete Evick, who has been Bret ‘s right-hand man for 19 years in BMB , is not only his guitarist but also holds down a myriad of other responsibilities, like music director and marketing, to name a few. He played all the songs flawlessly with their unique idiosyncrasy to match the sound and tone of how they were initially recorded. He nailed Poison ‘s songs note-for-song as fans expected it and counted him delivering it. Before the show, I had the chance to ask Pete what was working with Bret really like. He responded, “Bret is my favorite front-man. He has outlasted all front-men from that era and still looks and sounds great while delivering 100% each night. He is as cool as Robert Plant and Steven Tyler . After 19 years, I crack up that I spent 19 years with the definitive 80s rock front-man. I’m the luckiest guy because I get to play with my hero night after night. The way he holds the crowd in his hands is a gift!”

Bret continued to win over the audience in a more striking moment of the show when he recognized the troops at home and aboard, thanking them for their service and allowing us to have our freedom. To celebrate their heroics, 15-20 men and women joined Bret on stage for “Something to Believe In!”

By the time he performed “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” on his black Dean acoustic guitar, he did indeed have Camden in the palm of his hands. The audience lite-up their iPhones in approval and swayed back and forth to the heartfelt tune that made up their life’s soundtrack.

It was the most energetic and inspiring 90 minutes of pure rock and roll as the band performed all the hits; “Talk Dirty To Me,” “Ride the Wind,” “Your Momma Don’t Dance,” and “Nothin’ But a Good Time.” He closed the show with a monster jam having all the musicians from Jefferson Starship and Night Ranger join in for a killer version of “Sweet Home Alabama.” These are the moments you live for on hot summer nights. It is a fitting tribute to end the night of partying at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion!

Tickets to the party are available HERE .

REVIEW: There’s nothing quite like Bret Michaels’ Parti-Gras Tour

Photo: Bret Michaels brought the Parti-Gras to PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Photo by John Soltes.

HOLMDEL, N.J. — Bret Michaels brought the inaugural edition of his Parti-Gras Tour to the PNC Bank Arts Center last night, July 16, and the revelers in the crowd were not disappointed. This nonstop four-hour jam session is unlike anything else on the touring circuit. The concert drips with nostalgia, good times, positivity and summer fun.

At first, there may have been some doubters on whether Michaels and these groups could pull off such an expansive rock ‘n’ roll show. Those doubters were likely shut up at Sunday’s gig, which blessedly went off without a hitch, even with torrential rain throughout the day. That didn’t mean the weather didn’t impact the shenanigans because it was hot and humid for the entire concert, which kicked off at 7 p.m. and finished just shy of 11 p.m.

Jefferson Starship started things off as the opening act. For the unbeknownst, this supergroup has an impressive back catalog of tunes from the 1980s, including “Sara,” “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” and “We Built This City.” OK, some of those songs are from the days when Jefferson Starship was simply Starship, but the audience perfectly understood this was a celebration of all iterations of Jefferson, including their psychedelic roots as Jefferson Airplane, one of the most influential bands of all time. That meant they also brought “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.”

Their 35-minute set was a hit fest that moved fast, with little talking and maximum rocking. Lead singer Cathy Richardson fought the heat and turned in a stellar vocal performance, perfectly emoting the wavy, mysterious auras of “White Rabbit” and other tunes. David Freiberg, who was a member of all three iterations of Jefferson Airplane/Starship/Starship, was simply extraordinary, commanding the stage with a tremendous performance of “Jane.”

Those who arrived early at the PNC Bank Arts Center were delivered a sonic treat from Jefferson Starship.

Next up, with only a 15-minute wait between sets, was Night Ranger, with Jack Blades (bass and vocals), Kelly Keagy (drums and vocals), Brad Gillis (lead and rhythm guitars), Eric Levy (keyboards) and Keri Kelli (lead and rhythm guitars). They celebrated their 40th anniversary with a 50-minute set that had the crowd rocking and rollicking. In fact, the rocking began even before Night Ranger took the stage, thanks to spirited introductions from the legendary Eddie Trunk, who is also celebrating 40 years (in the radio business), and the incomparable Terrie Carr, from WDHA-FM, an important radio station that hosted this Rock the Park festival.

Blades and company didn’t disappoint with their setlist. They leaned heavy on the classics because that was the one rule from the boss: Mr. Bret Michaels. This tour is a party of recognizable, singable, fist-pumping tunes that have proved to be the soundtrack of the past 30-plus years. That meant audiences were treated to “Night Ranger,” “When You Close Your Eyes,” “Sister Christian” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me.” They even threw in a few Damn Yankees songs: “Coming of Age” and the exquisite “High Enough.”

Right around 9:15 p.m., Michaels took the stage to much fanfare. He is the deserved headliner and creative force of this Part-Gras extravaganza. He was a nonstop ball of energy for 90-plus minutes, bringing each and every one of the Poison hits, including “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Ride the Wind,” “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Nothin’ But a Good Time.” Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray also stopped by for a few tunes, namely “Fly” and “Every Morning,” sometimes with Michaels accompanying him on the bongos.

Michaels was his gracious best last night, thanking the crowd many times, offering gratitude to veterans and shouting out to his “Jersey” family. He ran around the stage, fist bumping fans, pointing to the crowd and overall revving up the energy to 11. He instigated sing-a-longs and had the audience light up their phones and sway their arms. It was a buoyant performance.

Also joining the fun was Steve Augeri, former singer of Journey, who sang “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Any Way You Want It.” The encore, a song that should be kept a surprise, featured all of the artists back on stage one more time (pretty sure That Metal Show’s Don Jamieson was even up there).

Michaels’ Parti-Gras, which continues for the next few weeks and beyond, is a package tour that promises decades of hits, and it delivers and then some. There were no strange transitions between the styles, and the crowd seemed pleased to rock out to these anthems, whether they were penned in the ’60s with Jefferson Airplane, the ’80s with Night Ranger, Jefferson Starship and Poison, or even Damn Yankees in the ’90s.

Parti-Gras is coming to a town near you, and this celebration should not be missed. One can only hope Michaels brings around his friends every summer season.

NR was aussum. BM had good energy but setlist terrible and guests awful.

Awesome show. Jefferson starship really delivered, played there hits with passion and she nailed the vocals ! I watch Starships videos a lot while on the stairmaster and Starship’s live performance was 100x’s better: videos are so edited – and i never knew live would be that much better !!!! Night Ranger was great and Bret _ WOW ! Sang so intensely What a singer: he sang with such power and what a tribute he did for military service members: “something to believe in” – Bret is classy and modest , and humbled us all with that tribute. Steve from Journey – I never saw that happening and I thought he was incredible! Best concert experience I have had in years . THANK YOU!!!

Great show, lots of energy. The venue was fully prepared. No wait lines for the bathroom and several options available to quench your thirst with little to no wait.

Before I get into the review of the show, I want to acknowledge The Hollywood Casino at PNRC.    This is the 2 nd year for this venue, and it is a wonderful place to see a concert.   It is a decent size, but you still feel like it is an intimate setting.    They have had an excellent, diverse lineup of shows this year.   Most importantly, $2 of every ticket is donated to Veteran and First Responder charities.     There are a few remaining shows this year.   Please check them out if you have the opportunity.

Bret Michaels Kicks Off Parti-Gras Tour in Detroit

"Does Bret Michaels know how to throw a party or what?" Mark McGrath asked the audience on the opening night of the Poison  singer's Parti-Gras 2023 tour at the Pine Knob Music Theatre outside of Detroit.

It would be hard to find a question more rhetorical than that.

A Michaels tour with any party reference in its title is as redundant as silicone on spandex. He's been the life of the said party since the cat dragged Poison into the rock scene back in 1986, and all these decades later he remains genuinely dedicated to showing audiences nothin' but a good time.

And that's what he did on Parti-Gras' first night, launching the 12-date tour with a hit-fueled night of music whose energy never flagged over nearly four hours, with a crowd of about 10,000 — most sporting the Mardi Gras beads Michaels' crew distributed before the show — following suit.

"I like to have a great time," Michaels told UCR earlier this year. "I like to party. But what I love most is treating people really great  at  the party. I told everybody individually before any of the agents or managers got involved, I said, 'All killer, no filler.' It's all hits. It's gonna be an ultimate good time."

Those hits came early, too, as Jefferson Starship lifted off with "Find Your Way Back," but spent most of its half hour in the guise of the latter-day Starship, playing '80s hits such as "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," "Sara" and "We Built This City," in addition to "Jane" and Jefferson Airplane 's "Somebody to Love" — but, interestingly, nothing from the band's '70s heyday. Night Ranger , meanwhile, threw some of singer  Jack Blade 's Damn Yankees into the mix — "Coming of Age" and "High Enough" — amid hits such as "(You Can Still) Rock in America," "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and "Sister Christian." The troupe also celebrated its 40th anniversary with the song "Night Ranger" from its 1982 debut Dawn Patrol , a near-metallic workout that featured a manic drum solo by Kelly Keagy and some crew friends.

The party raged once Michaels and his six-member band hit the stage for a 100-minute set. "You have no idea how fired up I am. My heart's going!" he declared after opening with a pair of Poison hits, "Talk Dirty to Me" and "Ride the Wind." (The video for the latter song was filmed down the road at Detroit's now-demolished Joe Louis Arena). Michaels also treated it as a kind of homecoming: Poison has played the venue 17 times over the years and ostensibly set a record for the most beer sales during one two-night stand. "I feel like I'm home right now. I feel like I'm in my backyard," he said. Referring to last year's Motor City stop on the Stadium Tour as "one of the best days of my life," he told the Pine Knob fans, "You're taking it up a notch" — and did much the same with his performance.

It wasn't just Michaels, however. Parti-Gras' first night was a case study in playing nice with others (he even left welcome messages on paper plates stuck to everyone's dressing room doors) and incorporating guests into his set. Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, who sported a Hawaiian-style print shirt and joked about being "the guy who still looks like he frosts his tips," delivered renditions of the band's "Every Morning" (with Michaels on congas) and "Fly." McGrath later joined Michaels for a beefy rendition of Sublime 's "What I Got."

Former Journey singer Steve Augeri was also in the mix, sporting a red jacket and white slacks as he demonstrated his uncanny Steve Perry stylings on "Separate Ways," "Any Way You Want It," a torchy "Faithfully" (Michaels' guitarist Dean Cramer recreated the epic solo) and "Don’t Stop Believin'," whose " city boy born and raised in south Detroit " was a particular crowd pleaser.

For his part, Michaels, decked out in a Parti-Gras tour tank top and five different hats throughout the night, stuck to the Poison playbook, with lead guitarist Pete Evick doing C.C. DeVille's parts proud.

Michaels used "Something to Believe In" to salute military veterans, bringing about a dozen onstage in the middle of the song to be applauded by the crowd. He opened "Unskinny Bop" with a rap and a snippet of  Red Hot Chili Peppers ' "Give It Away," while a sea of cell phone lights illuminated the venue during "Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”

Crew members threw giant beach balls into the pavilion while Michaels sang "Nothin' but a Good Time" with the winner of a "Dress Like Bret" karaoke contest, and the entire cast joined him for an exuberant show-closing romp through Lynyrd Skynyrd 's " Sweet Home Alabama ," trading vocals and guitar solos.

It was another big hit in a night full of them, a fitting close for a party that Michaels told the crowd would repeat in 2024.

Bret Michaels Announces ‘Parti-Gras’ 2023 Tour With Night Ranger + Jefferson Starship

Bret Michaels knows how to bring the party and next summer the Poison frontman will take music fans back in time by hitting the road with rock legends Night Ranger and Jefferson Starship .

Dubbed the "Parti-Gras" tour, the trek will also feature guest turns by former Journey vocalist Steve Augeri, Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath and a still-to-be revealed "nightly surprise" that is guaranteed to rock your world.

Michaels returned to Poison in 2022 as part of the massive Stadium Tour featuring Motley Crue, Def Leppard and Joan Jett, but this time out he's rocking solo within what promises to be a festival-like atmosphere.

Michaels states, “I created Parti-Gras as a sincere and grateful thank you to the fans, friends, and family who have rocked with me over the years. I promise to deliver positive energy, live, raw, real music, and all the bands will deliver sing-a-long hit after hit songs. Your voice will be hoarse after an epic, big, fun stage show.“

“After seeing Bret bring the party in every market of The Stadium Tour, this past year, we are looking forward to more of his ‘nothing, but a good vibe, high-energy performing’ on The Parti-Gras Tour next summer,” added Rick Franks from Global Touring Live Nation who are backing the run.

The 12-date trek gets underway July 13 in Clarkston, Michigan, sticking primarily to the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. before wrapping on Aug. 6 in Charlotte, N.C. All the cities, dates and venues for the run are listed below.

Pre-sale ticketing will start tomorrow (Dec. 6) at 10AM local time via Live Nation , with the tickets going on sale to the general public this Friday (Dec. 9) at 10AM local time. There are also VIP Meet & Greet tickets available via Michaels' website .

CLARKSTON, MI - Imagine being at a backyard barbecue with plenty of food and beer and a bunch of friends just started jamming, playing one hit after another. And those friends just happened to be rock stars. That’s what being at Bret Michaels’ first-ever “ Parti-Gras ” concert was like.

The Poison frontman kicked off the concert tour at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan on Thursday, July 13 and he brought along plenty of star power with him with Jefferson Starship, Night Ranger, Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath and former lead singer of Journey, Steve Augeri.

The first half of the concert went as one might expect. Jefferson Starship’s current lineup featuring lead singer, Cathy Richardson, and original member, David Freiberg, took the stage at 7:00 p.m. and performed all hits for 30 minutes with “Find Your Way Back,” “Sara,” “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” “We Built This City,” “Jane” and “Somebody to love.”

Night Ranger came out next at 7:50 p.m. and played 50 minutes of hits with “Rock in America,” “Coming of Age” (Damn Yankees song), “Sentimental Street,” “Night Ranger,” “High Enough” (Damn Yankees song), “When You Close Your Eyes,” “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “Sister Christian.”

Then, it was “Parti-Gras” time, where it seemed like even Michaels didn’t know what to expect at times as the night went on. He took the stage around 9:00 p.m. and did what he does best by bringing the energy to the “parti,” kicking things off with Poison’s “Talk Dirty To Me,” followed by “Ride The Wind” and “You’re Mama Don’t Dance.”

He then brought out McGrath who performed a couple of Sugar Ray’s biggest hits with “Every Morning” and “Fly” while Michaels hung out on stage, watching and playing the bongos. Things were just getting started.

Michaels then performed Poison’s “Something to Believe In,” bringing out some local men and women who have served our country as he does at every concert during that song. Poison’s “Unskinny Bop” followed.

Then, some Journey with Augeri starting with “Separate Ways,” followed by “Anyway You Want it.”

The mix of songs continued as Michaels performed Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” If you’re head wasn’t spinning with everything that was going on, Michaels brought McGrath back out and the two performed Sublime’s “What I Got.”

Journey’s “Faithfully” followed with Augeri on lead vocals again. Michaels and McGrath sat on stage and watched before joining in towards the end. Augeri and the band then went into “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Augeri then handed things back over to Michaels and asked him to play “Fallen Angel” by Poison, which was next on the setlist, apparently, but the concert was cutting it close to the 11:00 p.m. curfew, so Michaels told Augeri they were going to give the crowd “Nothin’ But a Good Time.”

After that, Michaels brought back every single artist who played this evening and they all performed “Sweet Home Alabama.”

“Parti-Gras” was a whirlwind evening of hits. If you plan to attend one of these concerts at a city near you this summer, get ready for all hits and nothing but the hits in a fast-paced setting that will have you smiling and singing at the top of your lungs with open arms.

“I feel like I’m home right now,” the Poison frontman told a crowd of about 10,000 on Thursday night, July 13 as he opened his 12-date Parti Gras 2023 tour at the amphitheater. “I feel like I’m in my back yard.” He frequently addressed the audience — most wearing the Mardi Gras-style beads distributed before the show — as “family and friends” and added that even after Poison’s appearance at the Stadium Tour last July at Comerica Park was “one of the best days of my life,” the fans were “taking it up a notch” on Thursday. “I’m having the time of my life,” he proclaimed.

Michaels opened Parti Gras, his new multi-act summer concert concept, at Pine Knob for a reason, of course. It was his 19th appearance at the venue — 17 of those with Poison, which he’s claimed (believably) set a record for beer sales during one of its two-night stands. Sporting a Parti Gras tour tank top and five different hats during the night, he spoke warmly about the metro area’s longtime support, recalling early shows at clubs such as Blondie’s and Harpo’s before Poison became a multi-platinum arena headliner. “What an amazing moment to be standing here at Pine Knob, all my friends, all these years later,” he gushed early in the hour-and-40-minute show, taking time, too, to offer effusive thanks to the local crew and promoters.

Michaels and his six-piece band stuck to the Poison playback on Thursday, too, delivering seven of the band’s biggest hits — including its cover of Loggins & Messina’s “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and, of course, the party anthem “Nothin’ But a Good Time,” the latter sung with the winner of a “Dress Like Bret” karaoke contest. During “Something to Believe In” Michaels paid tribute to U.S. military veterans by bringing about a dozen onstage to be saluted by the crowd, and he slipped a bit of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Give it Away” into the beginning of “Unskinny Bop.” And “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” was, as usual, played to a sea of cell phone flashlights.

The twist for Parti Gras, however, is that it was about more than Michaels.

Following hit-filled opening sets by Jefferson Starship and Night Ranger, he was joined during his part of the evening by a pair of other singers who brought their own formidable legacies to the show. Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, wearing a Hawaiian-style print short and joking about “looking like a guy who still frosts his (hair) tips,” performed his band’s hits “Every Morning” (with Michaels playing congas) and “Fly” and later joined Michaels for a solid cover of Sublime’s “What I Got.” Short-term Journey singer Steve Augeri played four of that band’s hits as well, pleasing the Pine Knob crowd with “Separate Ways,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Faithfully” and “Don’t Stop Believin’,” the song that put the non-existent south Detroit on the map.

Michaels brought the whole “cast” out to close the night with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” another tune that’s been played more than a few times on the Pine Knob stage. “Next year you want to do something big-ass like this to kick off the summer?” he asked. Rest assured that the response was enthusiastically affirmative.

Before, that, however, Michaels will be returning to play Sound Board at the MotorCity Casino Hotel on November 22, the night before Thanksgiving. Tickets go on sale July 20 via Ticketmaster. More details via soundboarddetroit.com .
