architecture

Visit from Edinburgh the most spectacular landscapes of the Scottish Highlands with our excursion to Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands. Enjoy the forests of the Los Trossachs National Park. Crossing Glencoe, Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, awaits us. Later, the Great Glen will welcome us. In its heart the waters of the great lakes of Scotland are immersed.

Go ahead and embark on a cruise on Scotland’s best-known lake, the home of the most mythical monster in the country: Nessie. To finish, he offers a pint in a pub in Pitlochry, a Victorian village on the banks of the River Tay.

A 190 High Street, The Royal Mile

Our meeting point is at 190 of High Street at The Royal Mile, Edinburgh where the tour to Loch Ness will start. We will stop in one of the most beautiful and magical valleys in Scotland, Glencoe , where the bloody massacre of the MacDonald clan took place. You will be able to take some great photos of The Three Sisters and also try to spot some of the famous scenery from famous films such as Harry Potter and James Bond.

Jump aboard for this classic one day tour to Loch Ness. Travelling through spectacular Highland scenery, this tour is the perfect way to see lots of Scotland and search for the famous Loch Ness monster (occasionally this route may be reversed) .

We begin by travelling past Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, towards historic Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument.

Your guide will explain the real story of ‘Braveheart’ and William Wallace’s victorious tactics against the English invaders.

There’s a brief glimpse of Doune Castle for Monty Python, Game of Thrones and Outlander fans before a morning coffee stop in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Our options here include the Highland gateway village of Callander or the mountain views at beautiful Loch Lubnaig.

'Our journey continues to a stunning viewpoint before crossing the wilderness of Rannoch Moor to spectacular Glen Coe'

The journey continues to a stunning viewpoint and photo opportunity at Loch Tulla and across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor to famous Glen Coe. The notorious massacre of the MacDonald Clan was carried out amidst this beautiful and dramatic scenery on the 13th February 1692.

You may recognise this part of the Highlands which has been extensively used in the movies Skyfall, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots. A majestic setting in any season!

After travelling along the west coast towards Fort William we stop for lunch.

Sit back and enjoy this beautiful part of the Highlands with Cruise Loch Ness, our monster-hunting partners for over 20 years. The theories are many and varied – a plesiosaur, a lost seal, a giant eel?  No Scottish holiday is complete without a search for Nessie and sonar equipment beams live images from the 200 metres deep loch to help you decide… Our return to Edinburgh takes us through Glen Spean and alongside Loch Laggan.

As we enter the Cairngorms National Park we often have time for a short woodland ‘walk and talk’ in this beautiful part of Scotland. On our way south we travel past one of Scotland’s highest distilleries at Dalwhinnie and through the Grampian mountains towards Blair Castle, home of the Duke of Atholl.

Our final stop is in the heart of the Highlands (Big Tree Country in Highland Perthshire) where you can enjoy an early evening stroll through one of the picturesque villages or a quick refreshment before the final journey home.

On our approach to Edinburgh we travel across the Forth Road Bridge from which you can see the magnificent Forth Rail Bridge. Considered to be the greatest engineering achievement of the Victorian age, it is one of Scotland’s most impressive landmarks.

One of our most popular one day tours from Edinburgh is our tour to Loch Ness and Glencoe; a full day taking in some of the most dramatic scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Our 1 day Loch Ness tour will visit Glencoe and offer options for a cruise across Loch Ness

A Unique Highland Tour from Edinburgh

Departing from Edinburgh, our Loch Ness tour travels northwest, passing the imposing Stirling Castle, before making our first stop in the Callander area in the highlands for some light refreshments, with the possibility of seeing a Highland coo depending on the time of year. We travel on through Rob Roy Country of Clans MacGregor and Campbell then over the dramatic landscape of Rannoch Moor and the Black Mount to Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most famous glens, site of the 1692 massacre of the Clan MacDonald. Here we pause for a photo stop, and to soak up the atmosphere in this haunting glen.

Continuing via Loch Linnhe, our Loch Ness tour will stop in the Fort William area for lunch then continue into the natural beauty of the Great Glen as we pass beneath Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Travelling on, we will pass though the pretty village of Fort Augustus before reaching Urquhart Castle - here, choose to take part in a cruise and castle excursion.

If not, we will continue up to the Clansman Hotel where you will have an hour of free time before we begin our return journey to Edinburgh. Here, you can relax in the hotel with an option to take part in a gin tasting provided by Great Glen Gins and receive a 10% shop voucher on our behalf, or, spend your time exploring the area - such as the Old Coffin Road walk that begins at the hotel car park. There is also the option to take a one-hour round trip cruise along the loch, with stunning views of Urquhart Castle. Loch Ness, 24 miles long and over 700 feet deep, is most famous for its sightings of the Loch Ness monster, affectionately known as “Nessie”. Spend time at Loch Ness, where you can choose to take a wonderful cruise on the loch.

The Loch Ness tour will start its return for home, journeying through the Cairngorms National Park and the woodland scenery of Perthshire, including the Forest of Atholl, with an evening refreshment stop at the Victorian resort town of Pitlochry, en route back to Edinburgh, where the Loch Ness tour ends.

Top tip: to save time at the stops and ensure you get to make the most of every minute there, bring along a cold packed lunch!

A great way to see the Highlands and Loch Ness in one day

“This was an excellent way of seeing Glencoe and the Highlands and visiting Loch Ness in one long day. We were lucky to have Connor as our driver and tour guide who was funny and engaged throughout the whole day and was also thoughtful, organised and a great driver. The highlight was the extra trip to Urquhart Castle followed by a sunset boat trip on Loch Ness”

Our Loch Ness day tour from Edinburgh starts from Edinburgh’s Old town. A unique small group tour experience to live the best of Scotland.

Below, we show you the full itinerary of this incredible tour in more detail.

Departure from Edinburgh

Start our Loch Ness trip from Edinburgh ! We depart at 7:30 from Edinburgh’s Lawnmarket and past the world-famous Edinburgh Castle , the volcano at the heart of this vibrant city, heading towards the mystical Highlands .

Leaving the city, we pass by Linlithgow Palace , the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots and into Falkirk to see the awe-inspiring Kelpies with their famous legend. At Stirling, we see the incredible Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument and hear the tale of the greatest Scottish heroes, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce as we travel over their famous battlefields of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn.

We enter the Trossachs National Park , home to Loch Lomond and the town of Callander, the gateway to the Highlands and frontier of the Roman Empire.

See ancient castles, Roman ruins and hear the tales of the Picts before we make our first stop for breakfast at 9:00. Grab some coffee, perhaps try the national dish Haggis and take a picture with our Highland Cows (April to October).

30 minute stop

Scottish farm

Your tour guide will take you up close to the Highland Cows , to lochs, waterfalls, ancient ruins and more, as we pass through the Scottish farmlands, through the lands of the clans McNab and Campbell as well as the Icelandic Vikings who have still left their mark on the landscape, as the road heads up into the misty Highlands, which have earned Scotland the title of “The most beautiful country in the world.”

20 minute stop

We will continue our adventure towards Loch Ness and the Highlands , where the landscape will soon begin to change drastically. The southern plains will be transformed into beautiful lakes, enchanted forests and rugged mountains full of history and mystery.

Then, just when you think you’ve seen it all in the Highlands, we’ll make a stop that will make you fall in love : the vantage-point at Loch Tulla. Look back over the mountains of the foot-hills and the crystal loch itself, set amongst the forests and fields, and realise that you are in a place like no other on earth. Here you will take some pictures that will make you remember this beautiful landscape all your life.

10 minute stop

Rannoch Moor

Once past Loch Tulla, w e are now officially into the Scottish Highlands and heading across Rannoch Moor, one of the most dramatic landscapes ever seen.

Described by Sir Walter Scott as a desert of water , Rannoch Moor is open and wild. Follow the famous road to ‘Skyfall’ past ancient man-made islands and perhaps get a chance to meet our personal friends, the wild deer of the moors .

Glencoe Valley & The Three Sisters

Heading up into the mists of the mountains and through the magical “Meeting of the Three Waters” into the land of the clan MacDonald , we come to one of the most breath-taking sights on the planet: the valley of Glencoe and the Three Sisters. This remarkable landscape, which has inspired poets and film-makers, artists and adventurers , is yours to admire and a moment to treasure.

Loch Ness & Fort Augustus

Through Fort William and up into Glen Nevis at the heart of the Great Glen , the magical Highlands are laid out before you as your guide tells the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, and the road winds up past the Isle of Skye towards the famous Loch Ness .

At Fort Augustus , on the shores of Loch Ness, we take our lunch break and you have time to relax, see the Caledonian Canal , stroll along the shores of the shimmering Loch or take a Loch Ness Boat Tour to go hunting for the famous Loch Ness Monster (boat cruise is £14, and your guide will have passes).

1 hour 30 minutes Stop

Commando Memorial

Leaving Loch Ness, we head to our next stop and discover the place where the training camps of the special forces were established in World War II .

The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge lies in the shadow of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis , providing dramatic views. Admire the scenery and hear the tales of the men who liberated a continent.

Through the mountains towards the Cairngorms National Park and Loch Laggan, admiring the Laggan Dam and the Palace of Ardverikie , home to the clan Macpherson as well as the forests and waterfalls of this majestic landscape, we reach Pitlochry, a beautiful Victorian town , where we stop to refresh ourselves.

Visit the world-famous Salmon Steps or the traditional local pubs, taste a good Scotch whisky or try a homemade ice cream made with whisky from the area, from the most famous ice cream shop in Scotland.

Forth Bridges

We journey into the ‘Kingdom of Fife’ and over the famous Forth Bridges.

The 19th century Forth Rail Bridge crosses the Firth of Forth here and is the oldest metal bridge in the world. Depending upon extra stops, we aim to be back to our departure point in Edinburgh by around 20.00.

(Make sure you bring snacks, it's a long 14 hours.) He was very funny and had a great gift for storytelling. There were so many beautiful sights to see, and we got plenty of time to take it all in and take lots of pictures before getting back on the bus. When we stopped at Pitlochry, Tully recommended the "unicorn" ice cream from the shop on the corner and it was AMAZING. On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh we travel via Glasgow to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We’ll make our first stop at the charming village of Luss which sits on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Sparkling lochs, tumbling waterfalls and majestic Munros takes us to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. We’ll stop at Scotland’s most famous glen and hear about the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the MacDonald’s were slaughtered by the Campbells.

We’ll get off the beaten track for views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before travelling over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

Fairy Glen

We cross the Skye Bridge on to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle*. The castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet, surrounded by majestic highland scenery. Eilean Donan was used in many films including Highlander and James Bond epic, The World is Not Enough.

The village of Fort Augustus lies at the southern end of Loch Ness and is lunch stop. You can enjoy an optional cruise on Loch Ness or take a stroll along the Caledonian Canal.

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making 🙂 –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

I had a wonderful time with Discover Scotland Tours. We had an amazing tour guide also our driver named Jerry! The tour had plenty of photographic stops from day 1. Driving through the Highlands into the Isle of Skye and to Loch ness the group and I could feel the magic Scottish atmosphere. Thank you Jerry for taking care of every single one of us and thank you Discover Scotland Tours for this fantastic experience.

10/10/22 – Vanessa

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

Situated on the east coast of Skye is the fishing village of Kyleakin and this is where we stay for both nights of our tour. During peak season some of our passengers may be allocated accommodation in the villages nearby to Kyleakin.

The village has some restaurants for evening dining and a shop should you require any necessities.

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

The nearby villages of Breakish or Broadford is fine, however some accommodation providers are situated on roads that even our small coaches cannot get down, so please check with us first at [email protected]

Please contact us to let us know the name of the accommodation you have reserved.

There are cash machines on route should you require to take out money while on tour.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

From Edinburgh to Loch Ness: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated May 11, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Whether you're visiting Scotland for its incredible scenery, it's rich history and culture, or perhaps to trace your family roots, at some point, you'll need to decide how you're going to get about once you arrive. And given the country's incredible natural beauty and magnificent scenery, getting from A to B can be a highlight of your visit.

While Scotland's larger cities in the south, such as Glasgow and Edinburgh , are well served by public transit, things can be a little more challenging (or interesting!) when you set your sights on top attractions like Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands . Not only are these great places to visit in Scotland, they also happen to be quite remote, and that incredibly stunning scenery tends to dictate how you get there.

For those choosing to stay in the nation's capital and who are planning on enjoying a trip to the Scottish Highlands, we've put together the following list of the top ways to travel from Edinburgh to Loch Ness.

On This Page:

  • From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Tour
  • From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Car
  • From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Train
  • From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Bus
  • From Inverness to Loch Ness

1. From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Tour

Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness

Highlights: Small group tour with ample sightseeing opportunities and a boat cruise

A preferred option for many travelers to Edinburgh who also want to visit Loch Ness is to join an organized tour. While there are plenty of tour options to choose from, our favorite is the popular Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands day trip from Edinburgh .

Suitable for small groups, families, couples, and even solo travelers, this first-rate tour has a maximum capacity of just 16 guests. The tour departs from Edinburgh Bus Station, St. Andrew Square at 7:45 am.

Accompanied by an informative professional guide, you head first to beautiful Glencoe in the Highlands. Along the way, you'll pass famous Stirling Castle, as well as the Wallace Monument, a stunning tribute to the legendary William Wallace, famous for his defeat of the invading English in 1314.

After a photo stop in the small village of Glencoe, you'll head to Fort Augustus, where the Caledonian Canal begins. This famous waterway cuts across the Highlands all the way to Inverness. Your hour-long visit provides ample time to explore the old abbey and enjoy the incredible scenery over lunch.

From here, it's a scenic drive along the canal to what is one of Scotland's best known tourist attractions : Loch Ness. Here you'll have 1.5 hours to explore the area, including taking photos of spectacular Urquhart Castle... and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive monster said to inhabit the loch's deep waters. A boat cruise on the loch is included in the cost of the tour.

After a ride through the attractive scenery of Cairngorms National Park, the tour winds up back at the original pick-up spot in Edinburgh that evening.

2. From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Car

Inverness, Scotland

Highlights: Flexible itinerary with numerous stopover options

For those wanting to do some sightseeing on their own, driving from Edinburgh to Loch Ness may well be a good option. While the journey time without stops is around three hours each way and makes for a long day's driving, the remarkable scenery you'll see along the way can make the effort worth it.

If you've got the time, you may in fact want to make an overnight excursion of your Loch Ness Adventure. While Inverness offers a variety of excellent accommodation options, from luxury hotels to quaint bed and breakfasts, there are also a few good choices dotted around the loch itself that are worth considering. These range from elegant The Lovat to budget-friendly inns.

You'll spend much of your journey traveling on the M90 and A9 to Inverness. Along the way, you'll enjoy sights such as the Firth of Forth, the attractive city of Perth, and Cairngorms National Park and Aviemore, to name just a few.

If you haven't already taken a break, do so in beautiful Inverness . Here, you can explore the attractions of the Highlands and enjoy a stroll around the grounds of Inverness Castle, the city's attractive high street, and its charming 19th-century indoor shopping arcade.

From Inverness, the last leg of the journey along the A82 to Drumnadrochit overlooking Loch Ness is just 25 minutes, so you'll still have a few hours to explore the area before heading back to Edinburgh.

3. From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Train

Tay Rail Bridge

Highlights: Variety of train pass options offering unique rail views of the Highlands

Getting to Loch Ness and back to Edinburgh via public transit in a day is certainly possible, but be prepared for a long day of travel. An average train journey from Edinburgh to Inverness takes up to 3.5 hours , plus an additional 30 minutes to an hour for the last leg of the trip to Loch Ness; this can vary depending on whether you take a local bus, a tour boat, or pick up a car rental.

However, if you're planning on being away for a night or more, then the rail journey can certainly be worth it, especially when you factor in the spectacular sights along the way. Part of the fun of the train is the chance to travel across the famous Tay Rail Bridge , a mile-long feat of engineering constructed near Dundee in the late 1800s. This popular route, widely considered one of the world's top train journeys by rail enthusiasts and travelers alike, also takes in the same great views of the Cairngorms.

If you're planning on doing a lot of rail travel in Scotland, you may want to purchase a BritRail Spirit of Scotland Pass before you leave home. This handy pass will save you money, and allows you to hop on and off trains at your leisure. Even greater savings can be enjoyed if you're booking through ScotRail three months in advance, with fares available for as little as £5 one way.

4. From Edinburgh to Loch Ness by Bus

A bucolic Loch Ness scene

Highlights: Leisurely and cost-effective with a stop in Inverness

Getting from Edinburgh to Loch Ness by bus is possible, but as with the train, it requires stopping at Inverness first. It might also be well suited for those who are continuing on to other Scottish Highlands destinations, and who are less concerned about time constraints.

A number of coach lines service the route, including National Express , and the average journey time is close to four hours . As with rail services, discounts can be secured by purchasing your tickets online in advance of your travel.

5. From Inverness to Loch Ness

Hills reflected in Loch Ness

Highlights: Visit via convenient bus or boat transport or hike or bike the 360 ° Trail

Unless you choose to travel from Edinburgh to Loch Ness by car, you're going to also have to decide how best to get from Inverness to the loch itself. In addition to local buses, which take around 30 minutes to get you there from downtown Inverness , there are a number of other fun options you may want to consider.

One of the most exciting is to hop aboard a tour boat. Jacobite Tours offers fun excursions from Dochgarroch Loch to Loch Ness. Easily accessible from Inverness by shuttle bus, it's a nice steady pace that allows for plenty of sightseeing, and entering the loch from River Ness is a definite highlight.

For lovers of the great outdoors who plan on an extended stay in the area, why not walk or bike from Inverness to Loch Ness? The recently launched Loch Ness 360° Trail starts and finishes in Inverness, and consists of a spectacular 72-mile trail that can take up to six days to complete on foot (it's faster by bike, which can be rented in Inverness).

You'll need to plan your accommodation stops in advance, especially in the summer season. But if slow travel's your thing, you'll enjoy every minute of this epic adventure.

This is a monster tour.

Head into the Highlands…

As you head towards the Highlands , you’ll see the amazing Forth Railway Bridge , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s bright red, so you can’t miss it, and it’s a stunning example of Victorian engineering. With its triple cantilever design, it is the biggest one of its kind in Britain and the second-biggest in the world. Our journey continues past Perth, the old capital of Scotland. With a rich and influential history that stretches back over 800 years, it has always been one of the most important political, judicial and commercial centres in Scotland.

As you journey north, you will pass Dunkeld – ‘fort of the Celts’ – the ancient religious centre of Kenneth MacAlpin. Our first stop will be at about 9.30 am in the beautiful, small Highland town of Pitlochry , one of the gateways to the Highlands which lies on the River Tummel. Here you can buy some delicious home baking and get ready to continue deeper into the Highlands.

Through the spectacular Cairngorms…

Then enjoy the stunning scenery as you travel through the spectacular and unique wilderness of the Cairngorms National Park , the largest national park in Scotland. This large mountain range has five of the highest mountains in the UK within its limits. We pass Aviemore, the main town in this area, that is now a centre for outdoor and holiday activities, and then continue north and drive through Inverness – the capital of the Highlands. Perched picturesquely above the river, Inverness Castle dominates the horizon of this thriving city. Then it is on to the famous Loch Ness .

Take a cruise and visit Urquhart Castle or Nessie spot from the shore…

Loch Ness is the largest body of water in Britain by volume; incredibly, all lakes and rivers of England and Wales would fit in it. With these dimensions, it’s not surprising that a monster is believed to live in the depth of the Loch. The famous “Nessie” was first seen by St. Columba in the mid-6th century. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that the mysterious creature came to widespread notice when it was seen again by an American couple. Since then, there have been thousands of sightings, and who knows? Maybe you will be the next to spot it. During our time at Loch Ness, you have a few options. You have the opportunity to visit Urquhart Castle and then join a cruise on Loch Ness (cruise and castle combined: additional £28.00 per person).

See UK’s highest mountain…

We then make our way through the Great Glen towards the Commando Memorial, erected in 1952 and dedicated to the remembrance of the Royal Marine Commandos who trained here during WWII. We stop here for a quick photo opportunity of Ben Nevis , the UK’s highest mountain at 4,413 feet (1,345 metres). Next, we will have a short refreshment stop, where you can purchase coffee, refreshments and perhaps a wee nip of whisky.

Relive the massacre of Glen Coe…

Glen Coe is broodingly beautiful and steeped in history. It is in the centre of an extinct volcano that exploded millions of years ago, leaving the rocky mountainous place we see today. As you stand at the mouth of the glen, you’ll feel the past come to life as our guide tells you about the terrible massacre of Glen Coe. You’ll learn the parts clans Campbell and MacDonald played in this brutal part of Scottish history. The other side of Glen Coe is Rannoch Moor , one of the last great wildernesses – 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, and a site of special scientific interest. It is also where part of the James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ was filmed.

Salute William Wallace and head home…

The route home takes you past the beautiful city of Stirling and its stunning castle, which is one of the most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. Several Scottish kings and queens have been crowned at Stirling, including Mary Queen of Scots. Not far away from here, William Wallace had one of his greatest triumphs at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. You’ll catch a glimpse of the Wallace Monument as we pass by Stirling. His exploits were dramatised in the award-winning film ‘Braveheart,’ starring Mel-Gibson. We’ll continue to Edinburgh arriving back at 8.30 pm approximately.

On 26th December & 1st January there will be no cruise or castle visit available. On these dates we recommend you bring a picnic with you as there will be limited options for food.

Please note on some dates this tour will operate in reverse.

The best tour I’ve taken. The tour guide (Robert) was excellent. He made sure we saw as much as possible. He was clearly very knowledgeable about Scotland. Plus the views were incredible. 100% recommended.

This was my third trip over the years with the Highland Experience Tours and I keep going back and recommending to friends! All guides have been fabulous, Rory on the last tour was exceptional - knowledgeable, fun and kilt wearing! The Highlands, Glen Coe and Loch Ness is a perfect day trip to get a glimpse of Scotland and also love their slightly longer Isle of Skye tour! Groups are small, minibuses clean and comfortable, pick up from the Royal Mile. Lean back, look out and enjoy the scenery! Highly recommend!

This was a really great day out to see the highlands and Loch Ness. We saw much more than if we tried to do this on our own, a long day but well worth it. John our driver was very knowledgeable and friendly. Covid measures in place. Minibus very comfortable.
