Frequently asked questions about this trip

How difficult is the trek.

The difficulty depends on where and how long you want to trek. The short trek is easy while the long trek requires some physical fitness.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is normally known as acute mountain sickness. This can happen when people rapidly climb up to an altitude of more than 3000 meters. We ensure minimal risk by adding rest to our trekking itineraries. Most people will feel some effects of altitude, some shortness of breath and possibly light headache, this is normal enough. Acute mountain sickness patients are quite different and usually have a serious headache, sickness, and lose awareness. In almost all possible cases there are sufficient warning signs to take action properly. Descending to a lower altitude is usually enough to prevent any further problems.

What type of accommodation is available during the trekking?

There are mainly tea houses and lodges available for trekking and they are usually made using local materials and are very comfortable. These accommodations are often family-run and usually provide single and double rooms. The dining room is on the ground floor and is often on fire. All food will be cooked in order in the family kitchen. Toilet facilities are sometimes separate and sometimes outside. Most lodges provide mattresses and blankets. It's a good idea to always have a sleeping bag, which can be useful, and perhaps an inflatable pillow.

How long do we walk every day on trekking?

Trekking programs are classified into three different categories: soft, moderate and hard. Soft treks are only about 7 days to 10 days in duration. They generally do not go above 4000 meters; you can expect to walk about 4-5 hours each day. Moderate treks are challenging enough and long treks that go to the high hill country. Physically exhausting, this involves trekking along the cliffs of the mountains for about 6-8 hours. Harder treks are longer treks that go farther away from the general abode of trekkers and tourists. These physically challenging treks involve walking for 7- 9 hours each day.

How much weight do I need to carry on the trek?

You carry some of your personal belongings, such as warm clothing, water, snacks, sun block, cameras and more. Generally, these items will be lightweight, from 5 to 10kg (10 to 20 pounds). Our porters are available for other heavy goods and for your information one porter would be sharing by two people. The maximum weight carried by one porter is total 20 kg. this means 10 kg. per person is allowed for the trek. In case if you wish to carry more than this weight then you need to hire additional porters.

What is the best time for trekking in Nepal?

October and November are considered as the best times for trekking in Nepal due to dry season. December and January are also considered good times for trekking but it is extremely cold at high altitudes.

Thank you a lot for your organization about my trek. It was a superb experience; all was perfect. Karma is a very nice person and a good guide. I appreciated trekking with Odyssey (a reliable Nepal trek operator). If I come back to Nepal, I will be happy to ask you to trek with me again. I am thinking about Annapurna or the Everest trek.

*****(5 star)

Have just returned from my fourth trip to Nepal and as always Odyssey Treks organized everything superbly. We visited Makalu relatively late in the season and were rewarded with empty trails and amazing weather. Karma was as entertaining, friendly, and informative as ever along with Ang Dawa Sherpa who together made the three weeks perfect.

They also organized a few days to Helambu at short notice as I had some time spare, all done easily and professionally. Thanks for the company both and I will be back again. I cannot recommend Odyssey highly enough as a genuinely friendly, locally based company that provides not only unforgettable experiences but also great service at a very reasonable cost.

3 Days Chisapani Nagarkot Trek Tour

3 Days Chisapani Nagarkot Trek

Combined the 3 day trek with a sightseeing day in Kathmandu plus an arriving and leaving day to give almost a week in the area. We had an absolutely brilliant time with Himalayan Sanctuary. Right from being picked up at the airport to when we were dropped back off there for our return journey. Bishnu and his team couldn't have done anything more for us. We were first timers to the country but with their guidance we felt comfortable straight away and were really able to maximise our time there. The sightseeing was brilliant with an excellent mix of locations which we were able to do completely at our own pace. The accommodation throughout was good as were the included meals. The trekking experience was excellent and gives a really good taster for what it can be like on longer treks. The scenery is spectacular and very changeable at this time of year which provides a new sight around almost every corner. I very much enjoyed it and it felt like a real adventure.

Chisapani Nagarkot Hiking

We had the most fantastic time on this 3 day trek! Our guide Kumar was just the sweetest! He told us everything we wanted to know about Nepal and more! I was so concerned after reading stories of travelers getting sick from drinking contaminated water or food, but Kumar ensured we ate well and safely and had no issues whatsoever. The food was absolutely delicious! We highly recommend Kumar as a guide and this travel agency! Thanks Kumar! Can’t wait to come back again! :)

First time to Nepal and this tour was a great way to open my eyes to experience all of it from the city then out into the villages to the beautiful mountain ranges. Bishnu was very warm and friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of village life and culture. Great singer aswell.

Subarna was a wonderful guide! Full of knowledge, good humour and supported us all with any query or request we had. He went above and beyond the call of his job. I could not master the names of our two porters but have to say that they were lovely guys with big smiles and hearts and were pleasant company. Aside from that, I loved the tracks we went on, beautiful scenery, loved the diversity of the country-side and it was a huge pleasure to meet some of the locals along the way. Accommodation was excellent and meals were delicious. Am unable to think of any complaints at all. Had an amazing time!!

Jai was a fantastic guide and showed us some incredible views! The pre trip briefing the night prior was very helpful. The accommodation during the trip is austere but the views are incredible! Jai altered our timeline slightly on the last day to help take us around Kathmandu to see important historical sites that we hadn’t yet seen.

What people love about chisapani tours.

Millenium Trek with Ajay, Raj Kumar, Temba and Tek was so wonderful. It was a great experience to see the nepali village life. Food was awesome and hospitality unforgettable. Life in the villages is simple but it's an experience we will never forget.
My friend and I had an absolutely incredible time on the Chisapani Nagarkot 3-day hike with Outshine Adventure. It was the highlight of our 2 week trip to India and Nepal. (We are two women in our 30s from the US.) Everyone at Outshine is lovely and they always answered my questions quickly and professionally. Madan and Kumar were wonderful, friendly, and informative as our guide and porter. We went in early September 2023, and I was worried that it would be too wet and rainy at that time of year, but it wasn't an issue (I do recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots though). The nature was incredible and the views were spectacular (that’s an understatement!). We were tired after each day of hiking and the tea houses were perfect places to appreciate the view and rest after each day. Highly recommended!

Chisapani – Hiking spot of northern Kathmandu

Kathmandu is one of the blessed city in Nepal. Not because it is the capital of Nepal rather being the center point to escape out to different Hiking, alluring, and exhausting destinations such as Nagarkot, Chitlang, Shivapuri Nagarjun, Markhu, Chisapani, etc. Probably we already covered the article to these destinations, in this post we are linning about the Chisapani, which is another adventuring Hiking spot from Kathmandu.

mountain-view-from-chisapani

We are always figuring out to explore the natural beauty of Nepal in a short period of time. Chisapani is the destination that is at an altitude of 2140m, that offers you the scenic environment followed by the sound natural beauty, and smell of the pure alpine forest. If you want to escape out from this busy traffic of Kathmandu , why don’t you make a plan with your friends to Chispani? It’s is the perfect destination for Hikers who are professional as well as beginners.

The northern side of Kathmandu is covered by Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and it is the nearest national park from Kathmandu, where you get the chance to explore the natural beauties and scenery of Nepal. The trail to Chisapani is not only the lush jungles aside, but you also get the chance to meet the hearted villagers and their daily lifestyle. To energize your body during the hike, you could speak with the villagers and know about their daily lifestyle.

After the hours of the stairway, when you skip out through the forests, you will surely have the spectacular views of different Himalayan ranges, that surround you from East to West. The popular Himalayan peaks who could get a chance to spot are Mt. Manaslu, Mt.Ganesh Himal, Mt.Langtang, Mt.Dorje Lhakpa, Mt.Shisapangama, Mt.Gauri Shankar.

chisapani tourist places

If you plan to stay overnight at Chisapani, it will be a great chance to not miss out the beautiful Sunset, getting down through the mountains, and the Sunrise letting up through the mountains. Capturing such moments with the great effort surely inhales you the returning trip via Hiking.

From Sundarijal, Chisapani is around 6-7 hours of Hike. From Chisapani you can even go till the Nagarkot which takes plus 5 hours to reach. If you got the 3 days off-time, it will be the great option hiking right from the Sundarijal to Nagarkot via the Chisapani.

Best Time To Visit Chisapani

Late Autumn and Spring season in Nepal is usually the best time to visit Chisapani and other similar destinations such as Nagarkot, Chitlang, and Chandragiri. During this time period, the scenes of the Himalaya range are much clear and clouds free. Also, the Hiking trails are also not that sleepy and trouble. So, the best time to visit Chisapani is between March to April.

Hiking Route to Chisapani

The initial point of Hike to Chisapani starts from Sundarijal, which is the initial hiking spot to different destinations that fall in the north-east side of Kathmandu.

Kathmandu (Bus Park) -> Sundarijal -> Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve -> Mulkharka Village -> Borlang Bhanjyang -> Chisapani.

So, this is the short introduction to the nearest Hiking spot from Kathmandu that is Chisapani. Instead of Hiking, you can even reach the point via your Bike as well. It is another great option to experience off-roading.

8 Best Beach Destinations to Retire in for Beautiful Views, Mild Weather, and a Laid-back Vibe

From small towns to big cities, these are the best coastal destinations for retirees.

chisapani tourist places

RAUL RODRIGUEZ/Getty Images

There’s something attractive about being near the sea, whether it’s the beautiful view, invigorating air, or childlike fun of splashing in cool water. We almost instinctively choose lakes and oceans for vacations, and scientists believe that proximity to the water offers actual benefits . It’s no wonder so many people want to spend their retirement years near the sea.

To come up with a list of the best places to retire near the beach, we've researched coastal towns and cities in the U.S. and around the world.

Carlsbad, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

Located on the Pacific Coast in San Diego County, Carlsbad boasts mild weather year-round. The city, nicknamed “The Village by the Sea,” combines a small-town atmosphere, a walkable downtown, parks, restaurants, cafes, and locally owned shops all within convenient distance of San Diego (under an hour) and Los Angeles (about two hours). Niche notes the median home price in Carlsbad is about $1,070,500. According to Zillow , the average home price is $1,558,692. There’s a state income tax, but social security retirement benefits are not taxed. And yes, living on the California coast is costly, but retirees whose budget allows appreciate the beaches, scenery, weather, local events, and quality of life.

I’ve visited Carlsbad’s golf courses, beaches, restaurants, and annual Flower Fields, where locals bring picnics and pick strawberries during the season. Residents and tourists buy produce at the Wednesday farmers market, as well as attend festivals like Oktoberfest, Taste of Carlsbad, and the Spring Kaleidoscope art fair. Plus, Legoland is nearby for family visits, and Disneyland is just about an hour away.

Beaufort, South Carolina

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

"Beaufort is an idyllic place to live for people of all ages, but especially retirees. Beaufort is known as the 'Queen of the Sea Islands,' and there's a special quality of life and code of conduct that [locals] live by that you don't find anywhere else,” travel journalist Michelle Gross, who has lived in Beaufort for several years, tells Travel + Leisure . “From the salt air and scenic marshes to embracing a slower pace of life, I'm convinced there's nowhere more beautiful to settle down than right here in Beaufort, South Carolina."

Beaufort offers history, cultural diversity, world-class restaurants, delicious seafood, and a variety of entertainment. With year-round mild weather, outdoor activities abound, including golf, hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. Niche reports the median home value in Beaufort is $312,900. There’s no estate tax in South Carolina, and residents 65 and older can deduct $10,000 of income from most retirement plans for state income tax purposes.

Falmouth, Maine

Not everyone who wants to live near the ocean is seeking a tropical climate. Some retirees enjoy views of the sea along with distinct seasons — cold winters, warm summers, brisk autumns, and the return of spring each year. Maine is home to many lovely coastal towns , including Falmouth, which Niche calls “one of the best places to live in Maine.” According to Best Places , Falmouth “offers a charming downtown area with excellent shopping and dining opportunities” plus plenty of activities such as kayaking, fishing, and visiting National Historic Landmarks like the Wood Island Lighthouse.

Falmouth is located in southern Maine on the Atlantic Ocean and Casco Bay, and, as in many coastal communities, home prices here are high. Redfin ’s February 2024 data indicates a median home price of $1,175,000. Retirement communities like OceanView at Falmouth provide a range of living arrangements, and the town's website describes annual community events like summer concerts, a Memorial Day parade, and Very Merry Falmouth, with a tree lighting, fireworks, and an Ugly Sweater 5K run.

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Located in northeast Florida, about 30 minutes from Jacksonville , Ponte Vedra Beach is a luxurious beach town with a range of places to live. “Ponte Vedra Beach is home to some of Florida’s most beautiful beaches and golf courses , minutes from high-end retail and restaurants,” says Ethan Loosen, who has been selling real estate throughout the area for eight years with Dream Finders Homes . “The northern part of Florida stays warm most of the year, while still experiencing the seasons during fall and winter.”

Retirees who are planning an active lifestyle will appreciate the mild weather, golf courses, beaches, and opportunities for exploring the area. Nearby Jacksonville offers a major airport, restaurants, and nightlife. St. Augustine , America’s oldest city, is less than an hour away, and Orlando is about two hours by car. Home costs average $853,855 according to Zillow , and while prices are high, many retirees appreciate the fact that Florida has no state income tax. Health care is another plus, with a variety of hospitals nearby, including the Mayo Clinic.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Located in Central America, Belize comprises more than 400 islands, nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, rain forests, jungles, mountains, and ancient Maya ruins. Retirees looking for a beach destination with swimming, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and a tropical climate might enjoy making Ambergris Caye , the largest of the coastal islands, their home. As a tourist destination, the island is home to restaurants, shops, and some of the country’s most fascinating sites. Residents speak English, and the U.S. dollar is accepted, as is Belize currency.

Belize welcomes retirees, and the Belize Tourist Board has created initiatives, like the Qualified Retired Person Program , to facilitate visas for new residents who meet income and other requirements. The cost of living is about 35 percent lower than in the U.S., and rent is 77 percent lower. On a trip to Ambergris Caye, I met several retirees from both the U.S. and European countries. There’s a lively expat community here, and according to the couples I spoke with, they meet for dinners, beach parties, and excursions to the mainland and even the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico .

Quepos, Costa Rica

Leamus/Getty Images

With shores on the Caribbean and Pacific, Costa Rica provides plenty of options for retirees who want to live near the beach. The Central American country offers a few ways to become a resident , mainly based on minimum monthly income. The cost of living is reasonable, and health care is available through both public and private systems. According to International Living , “Aside from the Hospital Metropolitano clinic at the marina, there's a modern public hospital just outside of town.”

The harbor town of Quepos, known for sport fishing, has beaches, restaurants, a marina, and shops. Roughly 60 miles from San José, the location is convenient for local and international travel. Quepos is also the gateway to the popular Manuel Antonio National Park, where visitors enjoy hiking, wildlife spotting, and remote beaches.

During my own trip to Costa Rica, I was left with admiration for its people — friendly, sincere, and welcoming. With fishing, sandy shores, and lots of natural beauty, Quepos is ideal for retirees seeking beach living and Costa Rica’s pura vida .

Mazatlán, Mexico

Elijah-Lovkoff/Getty Images

Located on Mexico’s mainland where the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez meet, Mazatlán features miles of beaches and a moderate climate. Restaurants, shops, parks, hotels, and entertainment venues offer much to do, on top of outdoor activities like boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking. The international airport is less than 30 minutes away, and there’s a ferry to La Paz in Baja. I spent some time in Mazatlán recently, and was impressed with the downtown area’s restaurants and parks. The seaside malecón , a four-mile promenade with monuments, food and souvenir vendors, and cliff divers, showcases beautiful views along with ocean breezes, making it a popular place to stroll day or evening.

Mexico’s low cost of living is a big draw for retirees, and Mazatlán’s costs for rent and food are well below those of most U.S. cities. Mexico offers high-quality health care through private hospitals at low costs, and many retirees arrange private insurance or simply pay cash for services. If they meet minimum income and savings requirements, retirees can also apply for temporary (up to four years) or permanent residency, with applications processed through the Mexican consulate in their country of residence.

Nha Trang, Vietnam

jean-claude soboul/Getty Images

Located about 250 miles northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and nearly 800 miles south of Hanoi, Nha Trang is a coastal city with a beautiful beach and an established expat community of about 4,000 people . The average year-round temperature is approximately 81 degrees Fahrenheit, and there are wet and dry seasons. The latter runs from January through August, while monsoon season spans September to December.

High-quality health care is available through several local hospitals, including Vinmec Nha Trang International Hospital, which has modern facilities and an English-speaking staff. Most retirees arrange private health care coverage. According to an article by Betsy Burlingame, founder and president of Expat Exchange , “Most international retirees in Nha Trang opt for apartments or condos in the city center, close to amenities and the beach. There are also options for houses in quieter, residential areas.” Burlingame describes Nha Trang as a walkable city with reliable public transportation, vibrant nightlife, delicious cuisine, and abundant opportunities for recreation, from parks to hiking and boating.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

chisapani tourist places

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations.

◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.

◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

chisapani tourist places

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

chisapani tourist places

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).
