History & Passion

In 1998, Ciao Tours was launched in Canada with a dream to provide unique, personalized & independent tours of Italy with a local expertise. Ciao Tours was born thanks to an international friendship and has focused on providing the utmost care and attention to our clients while respecting the traditions, culture, people and environment of the countries we live and work in. We discovered an authentic and passionate way to experience a country and chose a niche in the market which the large tour companies were not meeting. (The age of following an umbrella with fifty people you did not know was slowly coming to an end).

We wanted clients to experience the small family run farms called Agriturismo, the local guides in Rome, Siena, Florence & Venice, to enjoy a cooking lesson with an Italian family & more. With that common goal, we all wanted to immerse our clients into the hospitality, culture and beauty of our country, Italy!

Ciao Tours has grown to include a combination of international and local staff in Canada & Italy as well as Greece who combine, in a positive way, their skills and knowledge of their countries. With an office located in Calgary, AB Canada and dedicated Travel Agents throughout North America. As a group of Canadians, Italians & Greeks, Ciao Tours has vast talents in all areas of Tourism and Business. Each person brings their professional abilities to one common goal of ensuring our clients’ customized tour is their most memorable holiday!

Fabulous Trip to Sicily

Ciao Italy did a fabulous job arranging our last minute trip to Sicily. The accommodations, tour guides and drivers that Ciao Italy arranged were amazing! The Hotel Boras was beautiful and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Our tour guide Marina was a wealth of knowledge and just so sweet! And our drivers were friendly, efficient and safe. I have to compliment our driver, Cenzo for not only getting us to my grandfathers village safely, but helping us locate our family there! That is something we never thought would happen. Ciao Italy soiled us and I can’t imagine planning a trip to Italy without using them again!

First time in Italy

My clients loved the Itinerary that Ciao Italy put together with us for Venice, Florence and Rome. The transfer companies and the tour companies were top notch and professional. My clients were very comfortable and happy with everything. This was their first time in Italy and because of Flavia's planning and the companies that Ciao Italy works with, every part of the trip was fabulous. Having someone at the airport and the hotel and the train station, waiting to help them to their next destination, was perfect and I don't think they will travel any other way again.

Sinda at Ciao Italy is Simply Amazing!

Sinda from Ciao Italy Tours did an amazing job with my clients who went on a three city Italian whirlwind in six days -- Florence, Rome, Venice. In addition to the fact that it was very last minute -- less than 8 days lead time. Hotels, trains and tours in each city, Golf cart tour in Florence along with cooking class. Clients had a superb experience!

Unforgetable Holiday

Ciao Italy crafted an unforgettable journey for my clients trip to Rome, Florence and Sorrento. Flavia provided a comprehensive and well-executed Roman holiday with a touch of the Amalfi Coast's magic. Her expertise and local knowledge ensured a smooth and enriching experience. Highly recommended for those seeking a taste of Italy's historical and scenic treasures.

Taking Mom to Nonno's birthplace

We had a private tour of Sicily including a day in Nonno's village. Ciao Italy arranged a remarkable trip customized to our preferences. The guides, drivers, and excursions were great. The hotel was beautiful and the people could not have been nicer or more accommodating. This trip exceeded all of my expectations.

We had an amazing trip to Italy

We had an amazing trip to Italy! The trip was perfectly laid out for us. We had great experiences with all of our car transfers and can not say enough positive thingsabout the hotels that were booked for us. The only issue we had was a tour guide not showing up in Florence but otherwise it was flawless. Thank you Ciao Italy for an amazing experience, we look forward to booking our next trip!!

2023-Family Vacation

We all just returned back from the most amazing Family Vacation celebrating my cousins 50th Birthday. It was such a fantastic, once of a lifetime experience on our private tours. Mario in Rome was extremely knowledgeable in regards to the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Cathedral, Colosseum etc. He made our tour very interesting. Salvatore in Positano, Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Winery was also extremely informative and entertaining. He and the driver made our long trip alot of fun with music and singing on the way back to our ship. Both tours were awesome and all 11 of us were really impressed with our tours and the guides. Thank you Ciao Italy. 🇮🇹❤️😘

Thank you very much!

We had an incredible trip

We had an incredible trip! We started in Napoli and ended in Sorrento at a beautiful villa. We did private tours of Napoli, Procida, Amalfi (Including a winery tour) and Positano. We also did a private boat tour a Capri. The tours were well organized, on time, captured all the important places to see and the guides had a tremendous amount of information. Everything was amazing and I highly recommend Ciao Italy Tours.

Outstanding full day tour!

We took tour 348609 - Grand Tour of Tuscany - Siena, Pisa and San Gimingnano - small group and it was outstanding! This tour has three stops plus a visit to Castello Sonnino winery and was one of our only tours that had fewer than the maximum number of people that was advertised. There was a wonderful guided tour in Siena plus we had time on our own in Pisa and San Gimignano. It is a long day but definitely worth it because much of the driving is through the Tuscan countryside which was absolutely beautiful. we visited Castello Sonnino in the heart of the Chianti region of Tuscany. The highlight of our visit was seeing the recently hand-harvested grapes drying to be made into Vin Santo. It was magical to witness this centuries-old production process in person.

Tuscany with Wine Lunch

A great opportunity to see other areas that are further away from the city of Florence. Took this day excursion to Pisa ,Siena, San Gimignano with lunch included at a local vineyard! All in all it was a lovely day full of wonderful scenery, beautiful buildings and was very well organised from start to finish by our friendly guides .Although a long trip (11) hours the time flew by very quickly. A really good way to see the joys of Tuscany at your leisure. Would definitely recommend this company.

We would like to thank Nancy Bradford and Ciao tours …

We would like to thank Nancy Bradford from Nomadic Travel Company in conjuncture with Ciao Italy tours for an amazing, beautiful, personalized trips! They put together our tours of Venice, Bologna, Florence, Sorrento, Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Rome. Hotels rooms were what we expected but bathroom and showers could have been bigger. Travelling and transfers were exactly how we requested it! Everything was perfect from start to finish, English speaking vans drivers and trains were on-time, with spacious seats and luggage accommodations. Activity vouchers, with detailed explanation, VIP tickets to skip long lines and tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. There was not a day that we did not know what to do or where to go! We are very happy we used Ciao Italy and we would highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Italy. Michael and Maria.

Ciao Italy knows Italy!!!

We started planning very close to travel dates but Ciao Italy worked with our local agent to get us into great hotels in Florence, Milan, and Rome. They booked tours for us: some private and some small group as well as transportation. The highlight was an expensive private tour of the Vatican Musuem and St Peter's Basilica. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly but also politely assertive with other tour guides to move us through without waiting anywhere. The architecture, the church, and the extensive collection of artworks, including walls and ceilings completed by Raphael, Michelangelo, and others is so vast that this really is the best way to take as much in as a day allows. Tours of ancient Rome, highlights of Rome, highlights of Florence (Uffizi and Accademia Gallery), and train tickets between cities were included. Details and vouchers were provided for printing.

Confirm with Sub-Vendors

Most of the client experience that I booked through CIAO Italy was good. The couple of experiences that went bad were due to CIAO Italy not confirming with their sub-vendors that everything was all set. Both bad issues were in transportation. One local company had the wrong date for the transportation, and the other the driver got lost on a 2.1 mile ride...and the driver was a local. Not quite sure how that happens. Neither of these issues were CIAO Italy's fault, but I think they should get in the habit of confirming the information with their vendors so the clients have a smooth experience.

Hello Ken it is obviously very disappointing to read this review. We are glad that your trip generally went well. You had a group of 10 people and stayed in Rome and Sorrento with tours and transfers in between. We are aware of one disservice which was the arrival transfer from the train station to the hotel in Rome and in fact the local driver did not provide the service we booked. We have been working with the same drivers in Rome for about 10 years always with exceptional results and impeccable service, this was one very rare event that something went wrong and we promptly refunded the service with our sincere apologies. We do not have any information about a second issue, kindly send us an email or call with details so we can address it. Finally I would like to correct your statement as WE DO CONFIRM with our local suppliers all services very carefully and we only work with expert and reliable local drivers and tour guides. We care very much about our reputation and we work diligently to make sure that clients are satisfied and come back home with wonderful memories. Again our apologies for that transfer that did not go well, and I hope you enjoyed the rest of the many services and activities we organized for your group. Thank you Guido D'Ugo

  • Paul P 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A few bumps but overall a nice experience So far, the trip has been very good, however, there have been some issues that have required us to contact Ciao Italy to get corrections. First day, arriving in Venice after an overnight flight, we got to the hotel and there was no reservation. After 30 min or more, it was finally determined that the reservation was in the name of our travel agent and not in our name. Very frustrating. Also, the paperwork from Ciao Italy said the hotel stay included breakfast and lunch. Not so! Hotel told us only lunch is included. Ok. The stay in Venice was very nice and we enjoyed the tours. Next stop was Florence. Breakfast included with stay and it was a very nice stay. Then on to Naples/Sorrento. Arriving at Sorrento, we were told we did not have rooms with a sea view as promised in the Ciao Italy paperwork. Contacted our travel agent and she began trying to get Ciao Italy to correct the issues. After an hour (we had already checked into the hotel), Ciao Italy came back with a resolution - transfer to another hotel with rooms with sea view. So packing up and then traveling by taxi to the alternative hotel. It was a very nice hotel - nicer than the original but still VERY inconvenient that we had to move to another hotel. The new hotel, while nice, is not located nearly as close to shopping and restaurants. These issues should have never happened if Ciao Italy had paid attention to the details. The resolutions have been good, but we should not have to involve the travel agent after our journey begins. It has been inconvenient. *** Update after trip was concluded *** Final stop was in Rome. We were booked in Hotel Imperiale, in a good central location for seeing the ancient city of Rome. The hotel is touted as a 4-star hotel but this hotel is older and has not been updated in the last couple of decades. There were no electrical outlets near the bed (no good if you use a CPAP machine). I would barely rate this hotel a 3-star. The staff was very helpful - truly the bright spot for this hotel. I would recommend that Ciao Italy review their hotels so that when they recommend a 4-star hotel to their clients, it is truly a 4-star hotel. We had some issues on the trip that could have been avoided with more careful follow up; however, the issues were handled - but should never had occurred in the first place Read more Written November 4, 2023

This Ciao Italy Escorted 7 day/6 night tour of Venice, Florence & Rome was the first time my husband and I took an organized tour and it was terrific! Well organized, a good balance of escorted tours and free time (though a little more time on our feet than oldsters like us are used to), smooth transportation by high-speed rail between cities. Milena was a fantastic tour director. She stayed with us the entire tour and made sure everyone was happy and received everything they expected. She is full of energy and knowledgeable. Ciao Tours even set up an extra visit to Pompeii for us that was not part of the tour we selected. A great experience - we would definitely recommend Ciao Tours! Read more Written September 2, 2023

Our driver Valeria was very professional and provided us with commentary on the different towns. We were particularly interested in experiencing the true Tuscan region, and suggested lunch and wine tasting at a typical family owned Tuscan winery. What an experience! Absolutely sensational. She was there when we were ready to go and accommodated all our requests. Highly recommend. Read more Written June 23, 2023

She spoke English well and was full of information while we were driving the Tuscany countryside. One member of our group left and went off on her own and Valeria and our tour guide, Paulo went above and beyond to find her when it was time to leave. This woman’s disrespectful behavior cost us precious time we were going to get to spend in San Gimigano but Valeria and the other driver Diego found a way to give us back some of our time there for which we were very grateful. They also got us back to our ship in plenty of time. I would take another tour again anytime with Valeria. My whole family loved having her as our driver. The best of Cinque terre Tour provided by Ciao Italy Tours

Italy is a country that travel was invented for . . .

Places you can never quite get enough of . . ., everything you imagine . . . it’s true, tour information, matera – amalfi coast – capri, tuscany – riviera – lake como, naples – procida – sicily, for the love of italy.

After twelve years of traversing many of the twenty regions of Italy, I know there is so much more to discover and many more years of exciting adventures. There is something unusual, something wonderful, something unexpected around every corner. I have loved Italy from day one. Every time I return, I know why.

In the words of Frances Mayes, “In Italy you can find the place that corresponds to your soul more easily than any other place in the world.”

Ciao Italy Tours are designed to capture the true essence of Italy so that you feel totally immersed in local culture.  The days are leisurely paced, but filled with different adventures for you to experience Italy as a traveller, not as a tourist.  This is an Italy that will tug at your heartstrings.

Like most stories, it began with an idea in 2008 . . . to create an exclusive travel adventure for a small group of like minded people who enjoyed being active, had a passion for wandering Italy and wanted a truly authentic experience.

Planning a trip to Italy with the internet and guide book may not have you walking a hidden path without a tourist in sight; eating glorious food in a tucked away cobblestone alleyway or engaging with locals in the daily rituals of Italian life.

Groups are small with no more than 12 people   –  perfect if you are a solo traveller, a couple or a few friends seeking an unforgettable adventure in Italy.

We wander narrow, winding streets in walled medieval hilltop towns, order cappuccino Italian style (al banco), explore outdoor markets, discover artisans working in tiny shops, are spellbound by thousands of years of history, walk ancient, awe inspiring trails and eat simple, delicious food amidst loud Italian families.

Meticulous planning and research goes into every trip to ensure you are getting a perfect balance of local experiences and time to wander and explore at your own pace. Not too structured because often the most treasured memory will be something unplanned and totally spontaneous!

“Whenever I go anywhere but Italy for a vacation, I always feel as if I have made a mistake.”

10 reasons to travel with ciao italy, authentic experience.

It is a passionate, intimate, authentic journey, allowing you to experience Italy from a local perspective.

Small groups

Groups are small with an average of 10 and a maximum of 12. We visit and stay in small, quintessential hilltop towns, eat in tiny trattorie where the locals eat, explore places off the tourist grid on foot, in a wooden boat, on a bicycle or on a vespa behind a driver/guide.

Time to explore

A three night minimum in most places is the difference between experiencing a place or seeing a place.

Intimate knowledge

Twelve years of organising and guiding tours through Italy, including time spent in Italian Language School in Tuscany.

No third party

Everything is booked directly including accommodation, private transfers, tours and places to eat.

Perfect balance

Not too structured with the perfect balance of organised local adventures, choices of special interest activities and free time for wandering and exploring.

Central accommodation

Accommodation in historical, often family owned 3-4 star boutique hotels and villas centrally located in the centro historico, town piazza, lake edge or seaside.

Up to the minute research

Research is a continual journey, sourcing the best local places to eat, drink and shop where artisans are at work in their small shops, as well as new places and tiny towns off the tourist radar.

Sensational walks

Walks on ancient, hidden trails with rarely a tourist in sight.

Experienced travel consultant

Recommendations and assistance with booking flights and travel insurance.

What my travellers say

“Deb’s energy and enthusiasm, along with her research and local knowledge, make her personalised tours absolutely stress free and totally enjoyable. The Hotel or Villa accommodation was always in wonderful positions. Consider it a treat in store to travel with Deb.”

Louise Bushby

Deb’s knowledge, planning and energy are what I love most. Small groups and great interaction with people happy to share this authentic taste of Italy. Do yourself a favour and experience this sensational country with Deb – you’ll be sorry if you don’t.

Gail Hartshorn

Deb’s passion and enthusiasm for all things Italian means everyone in her small groups, either seasoned or first time novices, receive an amazingly well researched experience in Italy. Deb loves ‘the scene behind the scenes” and introduces her travellers to places in Italy generally only seen by locals. Our first tour was in 2019 and now we can’t wait to return to Italy for our next slice of la vita bella with Ciao Italy Tours.

Judith Laurence and Ian Price

It was my first time and now I’m hooked! Two tours with Deb gave me total immersion into the Italian way of life. Loved it all. The small villages, culture, food, history, different adventures every day, our fantastic accommodation. Can’t wait for my next Italian adventure with Ciao Italy Tours.

Fiona Gardiner

What an incredible time we had on our first trip to Italy. From day one we were blown away. We loved all the little, hidden towns on the Tuscany tour and had enough time everywhere to create indelible memories. After being home for three months, we planned our next tour with Deb which was the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. Again, Deb gave us the best holiday ever as she puts 100% into it. We would return to Italy in a heartbeat to join another Ciao Italy tour.

Greg and Anne McMillan

“What an incredible holiday you created for us. Your delightful enthusiasm was contagious! I could never have found all the beautiful walks in stunning out of the way places that you took us on. So much fun. Best holiday ever!”

Carolyn McKinlay

“Loved your quirkiness and sense of adventure. Every day was filled with delightfully unexpected morsels of great food, laughter and FUN! The walks were sensational and challenging and I loved every minute!! Thanks, Deb, for helping me to fall in love with Italy all over again.”

Sandy Carlson

Deb took us to many amazing little out of the way places as well as many of the 'must sees'. She knew all the great little cafes, bars, restaurants and sights that were off the normal tourist grid. This made the experience an authentic and truly memorable one. Unlike many tours there was plenty of flexibility in the itinerary to do your own thing and explore on your own terms. I thoroughly recommend anyone who wants the real Italian experience to travel with Deb. Buonissima!

Roger Marek

Wow! I love Deb's tours so much I have done six. Every trip has been an amazing experience full of unexpected delights. Deb is so passionate about putting together an Italian adventure that will literally change your life forever. I know I will go again and continue my love affair with Italy!

Diane Rogers

Discover Italy like a local. That’s the experience you get on Deb’s tours. The small group is perfect for eating at hidden cafes and bars known only to locals and seeing places you’d never find on your own. We loved the flexibility of options every day to appeal to individual interests. Two tours so far with Deb and we’re keen to go again.
