If you are considering a cruise you may be wondering what the difference is between a cruise ship and a ferry. I’ve been on many cruises and have also taken trips on ferries. In this article, we will look at the differences between the two.

Many people wrongly assume that by having taken a trip on a ferry they’ll know what to expect from a cruise ship. This couldn’t be further from the truth in my experience.

What Is The Difference Between a Ferry and a Cruise Ship?

Ferries are small ships designed to transport people and cargo from one destination to the other. Cruise ships are usually much larger than ferries and they usually only transport passengers. Cruise ships are designed with leisure in mind and have many more onboard amenities than ferries.

Ferries usually only make short journeys whereas cruise ships sail for weeks at a time. The purpose, ship design, onboard activities, and onboard experience all vary greatly.

Below are examples of a small ferry, a large ferry, a mid-sized cruise ship, and a large cruise ship.

A Cruise Ship and a Ferry Have a Different Purpose

What is the purpose of a ferry.

The primary purpose of a ferry is to transport guests from A to B. Ferrys are primarily a mode of transport and they often carry cargo and some carry cars. Ferries often provide a cheap alternative to other methods of transportation such as flying and as a result are very popular in some places.

Ferry Examples:

One of the most popular ferry routes is the Staten Island Ferry in New York. I have taken the journey on the Staten Island Ferry and although it is very functional and provides great scenery it’s far from a leisure activity. The ferry carries 70,000 people PER DAY between lower Manhatten and Staten Island.

Another very popular ferry route is the star ferry in Hong Kong. I enjoyed this ferry trip more than the Staten Island ferry because we were able to sit outside with fresh air but even still it is very much a no thrills ride.

What Is The Purpose of a Cruise Ship?

The primary purpose of a cruise ship is to be a floating resort for the passengers onboard. Cruise ships are full of cabins, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and swimming pools. For many people, I included, the idea of going on a cruise is as much about the ship as it is the destinations visited.

Cruise Ship Examples:

The most popular cruise destination is the Caribbean. Guests from all over the world head to the Caribbean year-round to take a Caribbean cruise. Most Caribbean cruises are upwards of 5 or so nights long and are generally pretty relaxed and fun.

Another very popular cruise destination is the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises sail year-round and they are particularly popular as Mediterranean cruises are able to visit a number of countries within a week or so. I’ve taken a number of Mediterranean cruises and usually visit around 5 countries in 7 nights. To do a similar trip on land would be incredibly difficult, and expensive!

What Is The Difference in Purpose?

Guests board cruise ships to enjoy the amenities of the cruise ship whereas guests board ferries to get from A to B. You can also transport things like cars and cargo on ferries which cruise ships are not designed to do.

Size & Ship Design

Generally speaking, ferries are much smaller than cruise ships and you’ll often find that they have a different design. The design of ferry does vary dramatically, some will be flat and lower to the river/ocean and others will look more similar to ocean cruise ships.

The Staten Island ferries are around 3000 gross tons, the largest cruise ship is almost 10x as big at 228,000 tons. 

Despite the difference in size, you’ll often find a similar amount of passengers onboard. On cruise ships, guests have much more space per person as they need a cabin, places to eat, and relax. On ferries, guests are usually just sat together and don’t need much room.

Ferries also don’t need anywhere near as many crew members onboard as cruise ships do. A typical ratio on a cruise ship is 1 crew member to every 3 passengers. On the state island ferry, you’ll find 3000 guests with only crew members. That’s 1 crew member to every 200 passengers.

Onboard Activities

What is there to do on a ferry.

On a ferry, your options are very limited. In most cases for a short journey, you will just be sat down. You may be able to look at the view or if you’re in the middle as I was on the Staten Island ferry you may not be able to see a thing.

On some larger ferries, you’ll find basic restaurants and bars. I’ve personally never felt the need to eat on a ferry as I get too seasick but more on that later!

Lots of ferries do provide free WiFi to pass the time but as most journeys are short there doesn’t need to be any entertainment onboard. Taking a ferry is similar to taking a ride on a train but with a few added things on occasion like video arcades or game rooms.

What Is There to do on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships are filled with restaurants, bars, theatres, swimming pools, casinos, lounges, and much much more. Onboard amenities do of course depend on the cruise line and ship but almost all ships will have multiple bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

On a cruise, you’ll find a daily schedule that is full of activities. On some of the more lively family-focused cruise lines, you’ll find things like ropes courses, surf simulators, and zip lines. It’s often easier to think of a cruise ship as being a floating resort or city at sea. You’ll find everything that you would find in a small city on land like gyms, hairdressers and spas!

What Is The Difference in Onboard Activities?

There is a lot more to do on a cruise ship than on a ferry. Entertainment is provided and there are numerous choices for how to spend a day on board. Ferries are more functional than cruise ships and although they may provide some bars and restaurants the experience and quality is usually very limited.

What Movement do you Feel on a Ferry?

If you are prone to travel sickness you are much more likely to feel seasick on a ferry than on a cruise ship. It’s common for people who don’t even suffer with seasickness to feel unwell on ferries, especially if eating or drinking too much!

I almost always take seasickness pills when taking a trip on a ferry. The exception to this would be where I am able to sit on the top deck and get some fresh air, this usually helps but I still wouldn’t want to do it for a prolonged period of time.

You’ll often feel vibrations and bumps and judders when taking a trip on a ferry. Ferries are simply not designed for pleasure cruises, they are designed with a purpose in mind and passenger comfort tends to come secondary to speed and efficiency.

What Movement do you Feel on a Cruise Ship?

I am an incredibly seasick person. I get seasick on almost everything but interestingly enough I very rarely get seasick on cruise ships. Due to the size, design, and stabilizers of the cruise ship, the movement that you’ll feel onboard is usually very little.

There are of course occasions where a ship may be caught in bad weather where the movement felt increases but even still this is very rare and doesn’t put me off of cruising. What’s Included in Your Fare?

The majority of ferry trips only last for a few minutes or a few hours. Cruises usually last for multiple days and can last weeks, even months! This not only impacts the experience but also how much it’ll cost.

Realistically for a cruise, you’re looking at least $100 per night but this includes your accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transport between destinations.

A ferry on the other hand is much cheaper with a trip sometimes costing nothing at all (the Staten Island ferry in New York is free). As a result your fare only includes transportation from place to place. Any food bought onboard is at an extra cost.

Large Ferries

There are some ferries that are as large as small cruise ships and look very similar. These are definitely the exception to the rule but I do think it’s interesting to see these ships.

Some ferries which look very similar to cruise ship are those from the Silja line. Onboard Silja ships you’ll find restaurants, bars, shops, and even entertainment. The cruises taken onboard are longer than that that you’d find on your average ferry and as a result, the ship has cabins and is well equipped for longer journeys.

To Conclude:

Taking a trip on a ferry is a great way to get from A to B. Ferries are usually basic ships with no added thrills onboard. Cruise ships, on the other hand, are destinations in themselves.

Taking a trip on a ferry is nothing like taking a cruise and if you’ve had a negative ferry experience in the past don’t let this put you off cruising! It really is like comparing apples to oranges.

I’ve been on 32 cruises to date but always try to avoid ferries where I can as they make me feel seasick and I don’t really enjoy the onboard experience.

Do I need a COVID vaccine to cruise? A line-by-line guide

When the first cruises allowing Americans restarted in spring 2021, all major lines were sailing with at least 90% of passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. That meant they required just about everyone on board to have their shots, with only a few exceptions allowed for young children and people who can't be vaccinated due to medical conditions or religious beliefs.

Since then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has withdrawn its opt-in guidance for cruise lines, and most are now allowing unvaccinated passengers to sail. In fact, most aren't even checking to see if cruisers are vaccinated or not.

However, with cases picking up seasonally and new booster vaccines rolling out, will you need a vaccine to cruise? Click on your favorite cruise line above, under "Jump to Section," to find out.

Note: In order to be considered "fully vaccinated," passengers must have received their final shot (not including boosters) at least 15 days prior to embarkation. Most lines only accept vaccines (or a combination of vaccines) recognized and approved by the World Health Organization and the CDC. Generally, proof of inoculation must include your name, the type of vaccine you received and the dates on which you received all required doses.

Booster shots are not required unless specifically noted. However, keep in mind that the rules may vary by country, with some lines requiring boosters for international departures due to local regulations or for extra-long sailings like ocean crossings when port calls are few or nonexistent. Passengers who have their boosters are considered "up to date" rather than merely "fully vaccinated."

AmaWaterways

Vaccine required no.

AmaWaterways no longer requires proof of vaccination for passengers. However, cruisers are responsible for meeting the requirements of the countries in which they'll be traveling. If they do not, standard cancellation fees will apply. Pre-cruise testing is not required. Should passengers become ill during their cruise, AmaWaterways will assist in procuring testing and other medical services, which will be the financial responsibility of those guests.

American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines does not have a vaccine requirement for all passengers on any of its sailings. Pre-cruise testing is no longer required.

American Queen Voyages

Vaccines are not required to sail with American Queen Voyages , and pre-cruise testing is no longer required.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Vaccination is not mandatory for Atlas cruises, but passengers must comply with regulations in countries on their scheduled itinerary, which could require that they be up to date on their shots. Additionally, pre-cruise testing is no longer a requirement.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways no longer requires proof of vaccination or a negative test prior to passenger boarding. However, mandatory testing and proof of vaccination could still be required in some countries the line visits.

Azamara recommends that passengers follow local regulations and the latest guidance from government health organizations when determining which vaccines to obtain prior to travel. The line also does not require negative test results in order to board unless mandated by local governments in the ports where the line's ships sail.

Carnival Cruise Line

Neither vaccines nor pre-cruise testing is required for Carnival sailings. However, the line recommends that anyone 5 years or older be up to date on their shots and carry proof. It also suggests that cruisers test themselves no further than three days from their sailing date to make sure they're in good health.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity does not mandate vaccination or testing for any passenger on any sailing unless required by regulations in the ports its ships are visiting.

Celestyal Cruises

Celestyal continues to require all crew members to be fully vaccinated, but passengers don't have to be. The line recommends anyone 12 and older be up to date on their inoculations. Testing is also no longer necessary in order to board Celestyal ships.

Cunard Line

Although Cunard suggests that travelers be fully vaccinated and current with their boosters, proof of immunization is not required, nor is pre-cruise testing for any of the line's sailing unless required by law.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line encourages — but does not require — all passengers to be fully vaccinated before sailing. It also recommends pre-cruise testing, no more than two days prior to embarkation, for anyone who doesn't have their shots.

Emerald Cruises

Emerald Cruises suggests that all passengers be vaccinated, but it no longer checks for proof. Pre-cruise testing is also no longer required, but the line advises travelers to check local regulations in the places they'll be visiting.

Grand Circle Cruise Line

Vaccine required yes.

Grand Circle has mandated that all passengers must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to embarkation as a condition of carriage, and proof must be provided before boarding. Passengers who are not fully vaccinated will have to return home at their own expense. Boosters are not mandatory. Pre-cruise testing might be required, depending on your port of embarkation. (The line will send you that information prior to your sailing.)

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Hapag-Lloyd does not require vaccinations or pre-cruise testing as a condition of sailing. However, the line recommends both to passengers as precautions. It also advises that cruisers are responsible for knowing and adhering to all local guidelines and regulations.

Holland America

Holland America now allows unvaccinated passengers to sail and does not make pre-cruise testing compulsory unless either of these is required by local regulations in the areas its vessels sail. Booked cruisers can search for requirements specific to their individual sailings by using this tool .

Hurtigruten

Vaccine required sometimes.

On expedition cruises with Hurtigruten , passengers are not required to show proof of vaccination, except on 2023 and 2024 voyages to Antarctica and the Northwest Passage or West Africa sailings departing from and returning to Dakar. Immunization is also not necessary for the line's non-expedition itineraries, but it is recommended for both coastal voyages and expedition cruises. Neither type of cruise requires negative test results as a condition of embarkation. Passengers with reservations can check specific protocols for their specific bookings using this tool .

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad passengers no longer need to provide proof of vaccination in order to cruise, and pre-cruise testing is no longer required, including at embarkation. Exceptions might apply for departures from certain destinations. The line urges passengers to follow government recommendations for masking, testing and vaccination.

MSC Cruises

Vaccination and testing are no longer terms of carriage when sailing with MSC Cruises . The line still recommends that passengers receive their shots and notes that it's each passenger's responsibility to comply with local regulations in the places their sailing visits.

Norwegian Cruise Line

In early August 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line became the first major cruise line to roll back its vaccination requirements. Proof of immunization is no longer required, nor is testing in order to board for any voyage.

Oceania Cruises

Upscale cruise line Oceania does not check vaccination records for passengers, nor does it require pre-cruise testing for its sailings.

P&O Cruises

There are no vaccination or testing mandates in place for any of P&O Cruises ' voyages.

Ponant 's website simply reads, "when you visit certain destinations, vaccines can be recommended," but they are not required by the line. Ponant also says it will alert passengers to their specific requirements after they have booked a voyage. Testing is also not needed in order to board.

Princess Cruises

Following an industry-wide rollback of protocols, Princess passengers no longer have to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine, nor proof of a negative test result, unless either is required by local regulations. Passengers are responsible for knowing the requirements for the places their ships will visit.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent doesn't check the vaccination status of any of its passengers unless required by local protocols. Testing requirements vary by location and might depend on whether or not you are up to date on your shots. If vaccination or testing is required, the line will alert cruisers approximately 30 days prior to their sailing date.

Royal Caribbean

To board Royal Caribbean ships, you don't have to be vaccinated or provide test results. However, the line advises staying up to date on inoculations and following guidelines issued by federal health authorities.

Saga has rolled back its vaccination and testing requirements, which is significant, given that the line only allows passengers 50 and older to sail on its vessels. They will only be required if local authorities dictate them.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Passengers embarking on river and ocean voyages with Scenic will not need to be fully immunized prior to sailing. Testing is not required by the line but might be needed to enter the country in which you're embarking on your sailing. Passengers are responsible for meeting entry requirements.

For cruises with luxury line Seabourn , there are no line-enforced regulations for vaccination or testing unless required by local authorities in the countries on which its vessels call. To see if your booked sailing requires either of these, check out the line's search tool .

Luxury brand Silversea does not require shots for its passengers or pre-cruise tests unless they're needed to meet local regulations.

Star Clippers

Star Clippers has eliminated all vaccine checks and testing protocols for all passengers on all voyages.

For all voyages through 2023, Tauck requires passengers 12 and older to be fully vaccinated and have at least one booster dose and/or show proof of recovery from COVID-19. Passengers 11 years old and younger are not required to be fully vaccinated. If they aren't fully vaccinated or don't have a booster, they must provide proof of a negative PCR or antigen test result from a test taken no more than three days prior to embarkation. For sailings in 2024, vaccination and testing requirements will be waived for all passengers.

UnCruise Adventures

All UnCruise passengers are exempt from vaccine and testing requirements. The line will continue to monitor the effects of new variants, as well as CDC recommendations and will adjust its policies accordingly.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Testing requirements are determined by the countries the ships visit, but the line itself has no vaccine or testing mandates of its own. You can check the protocols for the places on your itinerary for the most up-to-date information by visiting the protocols page on Uniworld's website .

All Viking passengers, whether on a river sailing or an ocean voyage, must be fully vaccinated for sailings departing on or before Oct. 31, 2023. It will not be required for cruisers embarking on or after Nov. 1, 2023. Testing is no longer required unless passengers are exhibiting symptoms and seek medical assistance.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages will not check proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar no longer mandates shots for passengers of any age. Testing is not required by the line but might be necessary based on local regulations, which with passengers must comply.

Note: Not to make things terribly confusing, but as you can see in the recap below, the order was reversed in 2024—Cruise 1 featured Dawes Glacier, while Cruise 2 featured Hubbard Glacier. 

2024 Cruise Recap

Cruise 1 - featuring dawes glacier, day 1 - vancouver, bc .

The  Celebrity Solstice  departed from naturally stunning Vancouver, British Columbia, which is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountains. You might want to arrive a day early to explore!

We loved setting up the classroom for quilters. Those floor-to-ceiling windows helped create a blissful learning and sewing environment for everyone! 

Day 2 - Sea Day (cruising) 

Quilters enjoyed our tutorials on “Getting To Know Your Featherweight” and how to use the different quarter-inch feet and piecing accessories. By the end, our quilters had learned unique tips to advance their piecing skills! 

Day 3 - Icy Strait Point

We loved the pristine waters, lush forests, snow-capped mountains, humpback whales, and bald eagles.

Day 4 - Skagway

A bit of time travel! Skagway transported us back to the late 19th century with its rich (no pun intended) Gold Rush-era vibe. We rode a vintage train on a narrow-gauge railroad from Skagway into the heart of the Yukon, climbing 3,000 feet (!) and passing glacial rivers, waterfalls, and gorges.

Day 5 - Endicott Arm (featuring Dawes Glacier) & Juneau

The highlight of Cruise 1! We sailed near the Dawes Glacier, a majestic 15-mile-long ribbon of ice rising like a crystalline fortress out of the frigid water. Half a mile wide, six hundred feet tall, the glacier is famous for its calving, which is when massive chunks of ice break off and plunge into the ocean. 

Below shows our morning view of Dawes. The sunny clear view was spectacular. The cruise coordinator of the ship woke everyone up at 5:30 am because the conditions were so unusual: smooth, calm, clear, and just pristinely beautiful. We are eager to go back and explore excursion options to possibly see the calving up close on Dawes.

Day 6 - Ketchikan

Visiting the quilt and yarn shops in Ketchikan were a highlight! We enjoyed perusing all the Alaska-themed fabrics (and dodging rain drops).

Day 7 - Sea Day (cruising)

The lovely Rosanna (who assisted with organizing much of this cruise—thank you, Rosanna!) taught quilters how to make a Featherweight accessory bag featuring our custom-printed Featherweight collage fabric.

Day 8 - Vancouver, BC 

This is where we said goodbye to the first crew of quilters and hello to the second. Welcome aboard!

CRUISE 2 - featuring Hubbard Glacier

The second cruise had the same itinerary as the first with a couple tweaks: the ship did not make port at Skagway, instead allowing more time to visit the awe-inspiring Hubbard Glacier. 

Day 2 - Sea Day (Cruising)

Quilters got right to work! They had impressive focus while Alaska did her best to distract. 

The weather at Icy Straight Point definitely lives up to the “icy.” Even in May, the lows can plummet to below freezing at night, and during the day, you’re lucky if you hit 60 degrees. A down jacket is the way to go!

Day 4 - Hubbard Glacier & Cruising

Our favorite glacier! This colossal ice palace peaks at 400 feet and stretches nearly 76 miles long. The glacier’s surface is a mosaic of brilliant blue and white and turquoise that seem to glow from within, as if lit by a hidden source. 

But Hubbard isn’t just a visual beauty—it’s also a symphony of sound. The quiet is punctuated by deep rumbles of ice shifting and cracking, a reminder of the glacier's relentless movement. You hear the distant, thunderous roar of ice calving into the water, followed by the softer splash as icebergs break free and plunge into the bay. Magnificent and glorious!

Day 5 - Juneau

A highlight for Kate, Ruthie, and April was the helicopter excursion in Juneau—landing on the Mendenhall Glacier and drinking the water directly from it! The water was clean, cold, and so refreshing—and blue .

Shockingly different weather from one week to the next! On the first cruise, Ketchikan was a chilly, sopping adventure. But on the second cruise—here comes the sun!

Day 7 - Sea Day (Cruising)

Sewing like mad! On the last sea day, the class room thrummed with the happy hum of dozens of Singer Featherweights. There’s no homier sound!

Day 8 - Vancouver, BC

Brimming with memories for a lifetime, we returned to Vancouver and prepared for the long drive back to our hometown of Kooskia, located just north of Central Idaho. See you next year!

I signed up for a three-year, $90k cruise but never left dry land and my friends are still stranded: ‘like the fyre festival’.

Nine months after his wife died of brain cancer in September 2022, Rochester, New York, native Rami Mina, 82, planned to cruise around the world. 

The retired engineer sold his house in Temecula, California, and submitted a $5,000 deposit to Life at Sea Cruises — a three-year world trip run by Turkey-based parent company Miray Cruises which promised passengers a once-in-a-lifetime voyage sailing 130,000 miles, 375 ports and 135 countries for $29,999 per year. It was slated to depart from Amsterdam on Nov. 30, 2023. 

“They were advertising at $30,000 per person, per year, specifically for digital nomads. I immediately signed up,” Mina told The Post. “I reserved a cabin.” 

Mina recalled sharing his personal details in his Life at Sea Cruises application expressing interest in the trip.

“I said I’m fearless, I’m into new adventures — I described that my wife had just passed away.” 

By May 2023, he was conversing with fellow would-be passengers from around the country in an online community board for Life at Sea Cruises.

He met a handful of them in Southern California. 

But Mina’s dream cruise — and many others’ — never came to fruition. Life at Sea Cruises announced on Nov. 17, 2023, that the cruise, expected to leave just weeks later on Nov. 30, was canceled — because the company hadn’t been able to buy the cruise ship.

At the time, some passengers were still in Istanbul , from where the ship had initially been slated to set sail on Nov. 1 before the departure location was changed to Amsterdam.

The company said it would issue refunds in monthly installments from mid-December 2023 through February 2024.

Around a month later, in December 2023, former Life at Sea Cruises managing director Mikael Petterson parted ways with Miray Cruises and launched Villa Vie Residences’ Odyssey ship, promising to sail the world in three and a half years beginning May 30, 2024, out of Belfast.

The cost of a cabin ranges from $99,999 to $899,000, according to Villa Vie Residences’ website. Passengers on the cruise have been given the option to buy the cabins outright instead of paying a daily rate.

“The reality is that Life at Sea was based off the Villa Vie business plan that Miray ended up selling as their own and eventually running into the ground,” Petterson told The Post via email.

“When we saw the writing on the wall, we had no choice but to walk away from that project to go back to the original Villa Vie plan,” he said.

Petterson told The Post that with Villa Vie Residences, he let residents put down a 10% refundable deposit, allowing them to pay as they go 90 days before each segment of the trip.

“We kept all funds in escrow until we acquired the ship to minimize residents’ exposure,” Petterson told The Post.

“The vision is still the same original vision I had six years ago, long before COVID. To traverse the world in a slower-paced fashion, where you spend more time in port to immerse yourself in the cultures of where you go.

“The ultimate way to unpack once and travel to over 140 countries per circumnavigation. The main difference is that we are not a cruise but a lifestyle of exploration only limited by waters access.”

But the luxury liner, Villa Vie Residences, has faced ongoing delays due to problems with its rudders and gearbox, and passengers have been stranded for three months in port at Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Petterson told The Post they’re waiting for final clearance to launch to the Caribbean and South America, while some passengers who sold their homes are left treading water. 

“Some of them have left their jobs, some of them have sold their houses,” said Mina, who is in touch with current Villa Vie passengers. 

“It’s really a house of cards. I feel so bad for my friends. The pictures [of the ship] that were on the internet looked wonderful, in reality the ship looks crappy. Nobody knows when they’re taking off. It’s a replica of the Fyre Festival,” he added, referencing the notoriously disastrous 2017 music event in the Bahamas.

Mina narrowly avoided losing his money to both cruises, he said. By the end of June 2023, just as he was about to submit a $25,000 payment for Life at Sea, Petterson gave him pause. 

“He [Petterson] said don’t pay any more — I need to go and check on the ship. He came back and said the ship is too small, let’s postpone the major payment for a month.”

By June 2023, Petterson, according to Mina, parted ways with parent company Miray Cruises. 

“They [Miray Cruises] knew that the ship was not big enough to go for a world cruise. They were saying the ship is too small, we need to change it. Miray went [bust] and decided to not go at all,” Mina recalled. 

“Before they went belly up, we asked for our money back. I got my $5,000 back,” he said. 

By January 2024, 78 passengers who shelled out for the Life at Sea cruise claimed in a letter to the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida that parent company Miray Cruises defrauded them out of millions of dollars, collecting an estimated $16 million for a new ship that was never purchased, the Washington Post reported.

Mina, for his part, decided to switch course and on December, 20, 2023, set sail with the Viking Sky, he shared on his blog — a 137-night world cruise out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops in Sydney, Haifa, Istanbul, Auckland, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Yangon and Mumbai through May 2024.

While he has been traveling the world, Mina’s pals locked in the Villa Vie Odyssey are still stationed in Belfast with no departure in sight. 

“[The passengers are] super doubtful. They’re super apprehensive. They are not happy. Especially when you’ve been told you’re going to go on your dream vacation. 

“I can’t imagine living in a situation where nothing is under my control,” Mina said.

Petterson, for his part, recognizes it’s hardly been smooth sailing for Villa Vie Residences passengers, but he remains optimistic.

“Our residents have been through a lot, starting with the nightmares of Life at Sea and now significant delays here in Belfast. But all in all, the residents have persevered and are looking forward to the next chapter of their lives.

“It wasn’t a perfect beginning, but it will all be worth it in the end. Of that I am convinced,” he said.
