WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
" Just what I needed for my 1962 Thunderbird! Before installing this, I would get leg cramps holding the throttle constant while cruising, I swear the throttle return spring was originally a bed spring. Installed this beauty before taking my trip down RT 66 in 2015. Finally, 7500 miles in comfort! "
Jim H. - United States
250-1223 Universal Electronic Cruise Control
" This is great. It installed pretty easily. I put it on my F-350 so I can park easier since my front camera is obstructed my LED lights and a light bar. I easily installed the sensors in the air dam below the bumper. "
Schawn D. - United States
Forward-Facing Parking Sensor System
" This installed very easily. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs this feature to make their car seat more comfortable. But this does require a high level of car handy skills, as you need to significantly disassemble a car seat. "
Sam G. - United States
Universal Lumbar Support System
" I installed this in a 2018 RZR RS one. I ride in the winter and have only a windshield. I installed the seat heater and it keeps me very warm. "
Ron B. - United States
Universal Seat Heater
" Once installed, the Jeep is more noticeable as one would expect. This is a very good safety upgrade--I was surprised DRL's were not standard on Wranglers. I have had compliments from other Wrangler owners. "

- Description
The 250-1882 is a universal electronic drive by wire cruise control that will work for any vehicle with an electronic throttle and exposed drive shaft. It's a perfect addition to your hot rod build or other custom application. We offer 3 cruise control switch options as well as electronic pedal interface options, depending on your set up. If you are not sure which pedal interface option you need, please call. Comes with installation instructions (located below) and lifetime technical assistance. Please call with any questions before purchasing this kit.
This drive by wire cruise control kit requires the installer to epoxy two magnets to the vehicle’s drive shaft to produce a speed signal output for the cruise control. This is the most efficient and most accurate way to get speed signal from any vehicle. It is a better signal than an onboard speed signal or extracting VSS from data. The Cruise Control Store recommends this kit for all hot rod applications that have an electronic throttle and exposed driver shaft. **** This kit will NOT work with 2003-2006 5.3 or 6.0 set ups. If your vehicle has a TAC module, this kit will not work. ****

Product Description
The Rostra Cruise Control kit is designed to add a cruise control system to those vehicles which did not come with one from the factory. You can set your desired speed by using a Rostra cruise control switch that is steering column mounted (sold separately). You can slow down or accelerate from your cruise by using ths switch for ease of use. The cruise controls feature set speed, tap up/tap down (1 mph per tap), coast/reduce speed, resume/accelerate, and controlled resume rate.

Cruise control for vinatge cars

Since I drive my 55 Ford convertible to Daytona Beach every november I am thinking about adding cruise so does anyone know of a simple cruise control system that would not look too out of place that I could install on it,every year its getting harder to drive the 900 plus miles without cruise and might help with the gas mileage too.

You might check a copy of Street Rodder Magazine for something like this. It would be pretty easy to adapt an OEM, 1970s era Chrysler/Dana-Perfect Circle unit, cruise to your car, but the later electronic ones use a signal generator to run things rather than the speedometer cables . . . which can be a lot less intrusive to the underhood area.
One possible issue might be if your vehicle is a 6 volt or 12 volt system . . .
Just some thoughts,
If I could find a simple system like my 72 olds had I would be very happy,it had a switch for on/off and a single button to set which is all I would need. It has been converted to 12 volts so I do have more options then if it was still 6 volts,I am going to look on ebay and see if I can find some old kits and there is a shop not too far that did install cruise controls at one time so I will need to check with them too. I was hoping someone on here had added cruise on one of their old cars and would know of one I could use,I do drive this one a bunch and it would be nice to have it.
I installed a vacuum operated unit on my '97 Nissan D-21 Pickup. In terms of ït " not looking too out of place," a vacuum unit would fit the bill, but for the tank.
Guest 4 bufords
my 62 invicta has the cruise control unit under the hood and the on/off switch on the turn signal lever but i dont have instructions to hook it up,4 bufords from ct
As for not looking out of place I want the switches to not look too much out of place if possible, whats under the hood I am less concerned with.
If you want the GM/Olds system, you can still get rebuilt transducers (eBay or some of the auto supply chains), probably can find a turn signal lever that might work, a brake switch, etc. all in salvage yards or possibly from the dealer. Several Olds service manuals are online at www.wildaboutcarsonline.com to see how the vacuum lines go. The vacuum actuator and chain can probably be found, too, as replacement parts. The typical GM system (non-resume era) was wired "ON" with the ignition key. The Olds units had a dash-mounted switch with an indicator light. When the "Resume" function came to GM in about 1981, the turn signal switch had an "OFF" position. From there, you can probably get Howell (in Michigan) to build you some cables, once you know the measurements and such.
In the middle 1980s, I bought two Chrysler accessory add-on cruise kits. I believe they were sourced from Specific Cruise in Fort Worth . . . one of our Mopar club associates worked for them back then. It used a signal generator at the transmission and then ran things electronically to run the throttle linkage items. Previous to that, Chrysler used a Dana/Perfect Circle style unit, which had the vacuum transducer integral with the unit, using a flex cable to run the throttle (including a "lost motion" link to protect the vacuum diaphram when more throttle was needed than the unit was applying at the particular time . . . same function as the link chain GM and Ford used).
Many of the add-on aftermarket cruise kits on the market during the initial phase of the National 55mph speed limit (circa 1973), used two magnets glued to the driveshaft for the speed signal. Magnets eventually fell off with time, as the adhesive degraded. Most of these kits had a reverse direction from "OFF" (at the lh end of the slide) to "ON" and "RESUME" (at the right hand end of the slide's movement) from the similar factory-sourced add-on kits (the OEM production was "OFF - ON - RESUME", lh to rh). I believe the Dana/Perfect Circle kits, back then, used the Chrysler-style transducer/actuator, as did the ARA-brand kits.
Please keep us posted on your progress.
Happy Holidays!
You might be able to find (Flea Market, etc,) the 1970s era Sears-Roebuck/other aftermarket units. I sold several still in the original boxes at Hershey several years ago. They were simple to attach, using a magnet held by epoxy and a nylon-tie to the drive shaft with a pick-up pointed at it. There was a vacuum unit and an old-fashioned key-chain affair which would would actuate the accelerator linkage to the carburetor. Switches would deactivate the system when the brake or clutch pedals were depressed. All-in-all relatively simple to install, and surprisingly reliable, except in a friend's '56 T'Bird which had a lot of under-hood heat on a trip to California for then 1998 Founders Tour.

Adding Aftermarket Cruise Control Is Easier Than You Think
If you’re an auto enthusiast, you probably take pleasure in the response from stomping the gas pedal. But c’mon folks, we can also admit that a long highway trip is more pleasant with cruise control. Set a constant speed, lift your foot, and let the car glide down the pike.
But what if your vehicle didn’t come with cruise control? No worries. There are plenty of aftermarket kits to add cruise control to your ride. If you have some basic skills, this DIY upgrade can happen in an hour or two.
Shop now for cruise control kits
eBay Motors offers hundreds of aftermarket cruise control kits and related parts. But before you make a purchase, answer these questions:
- Is the aftermarket cruise control kit compatible with your car?
- Are your brake lights working properly?
- Are you comfortable working on your car’s electrical wiring and throttle settings?
An eBay search could turn up a usable original New Old Stock (NOS) kit from the carmaker.
If you answered yes (or you’re willing to learn), then cruise control might be coming soon to your vehicle. And if you think this is beyond your skill set, most auto shops can install a kit for you.
Watch the installation of a Rostra cruise control system in a Hyundai Accent:
Tips for Installing Aftermarket Cruise Control
Here’s a quick overview of the primary components. Kits will provide detailed instructions. First things first: safety! Before starting to work on your car’s electrical system, disconnect the battery.
Wiring harness: Most kits come with a wiring harness, complete with colored wires. Instructions will guide you to wire the hot and cold sides of your brake switch. Other wires connect to the ignition “run” contact and ground. A significant step is to splice into a Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) wire. Most cars of the past 20 years have a VSS. If not, there are adapter kits to create a signal generator or use a pick-up coil to create a similar signal.
Kits often integrate with a drive-by-wire system.
Throttle cable: Attach the cable provided in the kit to the existing throttle plate of your car’s engine. Most kits also have sufficient adapters and linkages to fit a variety of throttles. Verify that the cable is not binding on anything under the hood. Aftermarket cruise control kits can also accommodate newer engines that drive by wire—and don’t have an old-school cable to control engine RPMs.
Actuator: The actuator is a mechanical box that controls your car’s cruising function. It is mounted in the engine compartment and has connectors for the wiring harness and throttle cable. It also has several DIP (dual inline package) switches. Moving specific DIP switches up or down allows the cruise control unit to communicate with essential vehicle functions. The settings include the number of engine cylinders, the type of speed sensor, and its output. To save the new settings, power off the actuator and then restore power.
A cruise control switch integrates with the turn signal lever.
Driver switch: Many cruise control systems offer a switch on your turn signal stalk that looks like a factory installation. Others provide buttons on a dash-mounted plate. We recommend the turn signal switch, which has a cleaner look and helps keep your eyes on the road.
Testing Required
Kits are designed for specifically vehicles and provide all the necessary gear.
After completing all the steps stipulated in the kit instructions:
- Re-connect the battery.
- Check to verify that your brake lights still function correctly.
- Start the engine, leave it in Park, and mildly depress the gas pedal.
- Make sure that it returns to a slow idle setting.
A dash-mounted controller activates cruise control.
If the brake lights and idle are working as expected, it’s time to take the car to a deserted parking lot. Next, accelerate to a moderate speed, set the cruise control, and see if the speed is maintained with your foot off the gas pedal. Finally, touch the brake pedal and verify that the cruise control disengages.
If everything is working, your car should be ready for further testing on the highway. It’s a good idea to take several short, local highway trips to verify a successful installation before heading off on a long interstate journey.
While aftermarket cruise control is available to hands-on DIYers, that’s not yet mainstream for so-called adaptive cruise control. But automated road sensing and even lane-keeping is probably not far off. For example, an aftermarket self-driving kit from Comma.ai is usually available on eBay .
