Meander Mount Wellington

Take the 30-minute road to the summit of monstrous Mount Wellington, which has a wooden boardwalk and enclosed lookout. The summit is often covered in snow, even in summer. However, its lower section consists of thickly forested trails for hiking, biking and even horseback riding.

Gather in the Gardens

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are about a 25-minute walk from Hobart's center. Established in 1818, the Gardens have Tasmanian, Chinese, cactus and palm collections, as well as a Subantarctic Plant House that recreates the climate and flora of antarctic Macquarie Island.

Local Cuisine

Don't leave Hobart without sampling the Tassie classic: meat pies. A flaky puff pastry crust covers a savory center of spiced chicken or beef. Go higher-end with a dinner of Flinders Island lamb, local oysters or Spring Bay mussels. For a sweet treat, stop into Daci and Daci Bakers and try to choose just one cake or pastry — it's easier said than done.

There are several local designers with stalls at the Saturday Salamanca Market, including Made By Hand. Salamanca Place is a great spot to shop for souvenirs every day of the week during your Hobart cruise. Peruse the boutiques and shops of this neighborhood for Tasmanian timber and lavender gifts, jewelry, ceramics, hand-woven wool and cloth items and Tasmanian-inspired fine art prints.

Almost 150 cruise ship visits lined up for Tasmania

PORTS across Tasmania are preparing to welcome almost 150 cruise ship visits during the upcoming 2022-23 cruise season.

Plans for the cruise season began to unfold following the state premier’s announcement in June that Tasmania would reopen to cruise ship visits.

TasPorts has released a schedule for cruise activity at its ports, currently displaying 78 visits locked in for Hobart, 33 for Burnie and 23 for Port Arthur.

A further six visits are planned for Bell Bay, another six for Coles Bay, and two for Port of Devonport, according to the schedule.

TasPorts said the Hobart visit number includes turnaround calls by 63-metre LOA Coral Discoverer, which will call Hobart its home port for the Tasmanian cruise season.

TasPorts chief executive officer Anthony Donald said the company is a strong supporter of cruise ship visits to Tasmania.

“TasPorts’ primary role is to facilitate trade for the benefit of the state and as the port operator, we’re looking forward to welcoming cruise vessels back to Tasmania waters following government approval,” he said.

Mr Donald said the upcoming visits will benefit the Tasmanian visitor economy, particularly outside of the state’s major cities.

“Independent economic research confirms that the economic contribution of a single medium sized cruise ship visit to the state is more than $650,000 per visit,” he said.

“If you extrapolate that out over the cruise ship season, you very quickly get a sense of their overall value to the state.”

Mr Donald said cruise ship companies are still displaying a strong interest in visiting the state’s traditional cruise ship ports.

“TasPorts has for some time been actively engaging with cruise lines, local government, local tourism operators and Commonwealth and Tasmanian authorities to prepare for a safe and effective return of cruise ships to Tasmania,” he said.

“This includes initiatives such as limiting the number of cruise ships in the Port of Hobart to no more than two at any one time and maximising disbursement of visitors and their associated spending across the state.

Mr Donald thanked TasPorts’ cruise partners, industry associations and cruise lines for their professionalism and collaboration in the re-establishment of visits.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the industry and Tourism Tasmania to ensure an ongoing effective and sustainable program of visits for the benefit of the state,” he said.

The arrival of Coral Princess will mark the first visit of the season. The vessel is scheduled to arrive in Burnie on 5 November.

Port of Hobart Prepares to Welcome its First Major Cruise Ship in Over Two Years

The port of Hobart is organizing a ceremony to celebrate the arrival of P&O Cruises Australia’s flagship Pacific Explorer on October 25, according to a press release.

The Pacific Explorer will be the first major cruise line ship to dock in Hobart in more than two years, launching a new era of tourism in Australia’s island state of Tasmania, according to the port.

The arrival of the vessel in the port represents yet another step forward for the visitor economy and the rebuilding of Australia’s $5 billion-a-year cruising industry, which will benefit local businesses and cruise line suppliers.

The arrival in Hobart is one of 62 calls to Tasmanian destinations made by ten ships from six of Carnival Australia’s eight sub-brands during the summer cruise season, adding $34.7 million to the state’s economy.

The cruise ship is scheduled to arrive at the Hobart cruise terminal at 7:45 AM local time, while a media conference, scheduled for 8:30 AM, will follow the disembarkation of passengers and crew.

On March 27, eight travelers on a Norwegian cruise in Africa were stranded on the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe after their private excursion arrived back at the ship more than an hour after boarding closed. The cruisers chased the ship for almost a week before reboarding in Dakar, Senegal.

More recently, on May 13, a couple sailing in the Mediterranean with the same cruise line was left stranded in Motril, Spain, after their excursion (not organized by Norwegian) had an hour bus delay getting back to the ship due to rain,  CNN reported .

On any cruise, travelers have the freedom to experience multiple destinations on one trip with port stops where they can exit the ship and explore a new place.

But cruise ships run on a tight schedule, often only allotting passengers around seven or eight hours for a one-day stop, sometimes even less. This leaves many to wonder what happens if you're running late getting back to the ship : Will the crew wait up, or will you end up stranded, chasing the ship from stop to stop?

Will the captain wait for you?

The answer is maybe. 

On an April 2022 cruise on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , Business Insider attended a Q&A with Captain Rob Hempstead, where he answered this very question. 

Hampstead, who's been a Royal Caribbean captain for two decades, started his career in Alaska's fishing industry. After 14 years of fishing, he became a captain. Before Wonder of the Seas, Hampstead served as captain of seven other Royal Caribbean ships, including Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas .

The most stressful part of a cruise for the crew is getting out of the ports on time, he said, "Because the faster we go, the more fuel we have to burn."

Some people come late, and as a result, are left behind, he added. 

However, this doesn't mean he won't wait for you — you just need to know what to do.

When will a cruise ship wait for passengers.

There are two instances in which the ship will wait. The first is if you're late returning from a cruise-line organized excursion. Since the excursion is supposed to only take place within the allotted port time, the ship will wait for passengers coming from a cruise line excursion that's running late.

However, if you've spent the day independently on your own, or with a private tour company, there are certain steps you must take to avoid being stranded.

If you're behind schedule, call the ship agent to alert the cruise that you're running late, he said. On Royal Caribbean cruises, this number can be found at the bottom of Cruise Compass, a daily flyer all passengers receive in their stateroom each day detailing the day's activities.

The agent may also be referred to as a port agent, according to a copy of Cruise Compass obtained by BI.

Whether the ship can wait for you, however, will depend on how late you'll be, he added.

"If I know you're 10 minutes away, I can make an educated decision about whether or not we can wait," Hampstead said. "We will wait if we can." 

Of course, if that's you, you'll have to run up the dock to the ship with many passengers watching, wondering what is holding up the departure, as they quickly realize it was you. Instead, always plan your day with ample time to return to port, or better yet, book your excursions through the cruise line.
