15 Fabulous Day Trips in Connecticut

Ct day trips

Connecticut is in southwestern New England. It has a big city, fancy suburbs of New York City, a pretty coastline, and rural farmland. I did my residency in Hartford and lived just north of that area for about 5 years. Since Connecticut borders Rhode Island, I still visit often for day trips. Below are a few of my favorite Connecticut day trips.

Table of Contents

The historic boating town of Mystic has an aquarium, cool balancing bridge, colonial seaport, and quaint downtown.

things to do in Connecticut

Hike to Hublein Tower, Simsbury

A 1.25-mile hike through Talcott Mountain’s woods brings you to this tower with sweeping views of Connecticut, including Hartford.

Talcott Mountain is one of my top ten New England family hikes.

West Hartford Center

If you are in the mood to spend a day shopping and eating, West Hartford is the place to be. Here you can find almost any store you can think of. My favorite Connecticut restaurant, Restaurant Bricco , is on LaSalle Road.

New Haven is the Ivy League school’s home, Yale, and the home of some delicious wood-fired pizza. There is some controversy about who has the best, but the original is at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. There are often long lines, so it is good to show up right when they open. One of their most popular pizza is the white clam. While in town, visit the museums of Yale, such as the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Southwestern Connecticut

day trips in Ct

If you want to explore Connecticut’s rural side, try a road trip around the southwest corner of the state where you can drive past farms, go antiquing, visit wineries, and hike to waterfalls.

Read more about spending a day in rural southwestern Connecticut.

Connecticut Wine Trail

You can see the whole state, as well as have an amazing day visiting Connecticut’s 40 wineries, but of course, you would need a designated driver and drink safely.

You can read about my day with the girls at Jonathan Edwards Vineyards.

A Day at Lavender Pond Farm, Killingworth

If you are in Connecticut in June or July, spend a peaceful day among the blooming, fragrant stems. The farm has chairs and games to play as well. This farm is on my list of the best flower fields around New England.

Connecticut day trips

Clyde’s Cider Mill, Old Mystic

If you are visiting in the fall, be sure to join the party at Clyde’s Cider Mill, where you can see cider being pressed by a room-sized antique press and eat apple cider donuts. Right up the road, visit Whitehall Cemetery with graves dating back to the 1600s.

Sharpe Hill Winery, Pomfret

Start your day at the Lavender Hill Alpaca Farm in Voluntown. After getting your fill of these frilly-headed animals. Then take a hike around the Connecticut Audobon Society Bafflin Sanctuary. End your day with a wine tasting and dinner in Sharpe Hill’s beautiful old barn.

Lake Compounce

Read more about spending a day at Lake Compounce, the oldest continually running amusement park in the United States.

Devil’s Hopyard

Devil’s Hopyard is one of my favorite picnic spots in New England. On the two-mile hike, you can see a waterfall, covered bridge, and sweeping green views.

Explore the Connecticut River Valley

Take a boat ride on the river, explore Gillette Castle, take a train ride, or shop and eat in the charming town of Essex.

Read on for how to spend a day in this area.

Visit Old Saybrook

Get a spa treatment at the Saybrook Point Resort and Spa. Walk through the Monument Park. Enjoy lunch on Main Street. A few of my favorite restaurants are the Penny Lane Pub or Liv’s Oyster Bar. Finish your day with a walk by the ocean or a peek at the Lynde Point Lighthouse.

Spend a Day at the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme

Around the turn of the twentieth century, Florence Griswold was running a boarding house on the Lieutenant River banks drawing painters to the area. This was the Lyme Artist Colony, the beginning and hub of American Impressionism. The house is open for touring, as well as a garden and a museum housing a large collection of impressionist paintings. Be sure to leave time for lunch on the veranda overlooking the river.

Mark Twain House

This gothic-style house in Hartford is where Samuel Clements raised his family. There are three buildings to tour, including the house.

I hope you enjoyed this list of day trips in Connecticut. I will continue to add to it as I think of more.

Did I miss any of your favorites? Please let me know in the comments.

I live in Boston, these are some really great things to see in CT. I love Mystic, it’s one of my favorite towns in New England. I actually wasn’t aware if the Lavender Fields, I’m going to need to check those out some year.

Those are some great ideas for day trips. I think I should like to do them all – from the lavender to antique hunting to the wine trail. Mystic has always been intriguing to me, and those waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard looks so scenic.

I have only done Mystic and its outdoor seaport museum in my only day in CT and I really do need to go back to the state to check out the natural beauty (or maybe the changing of the colours in the leaves in the fall). I am loving the waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard and would defo want to check these out. One place I would like to go is Hartford for a bit of history, as the founder of the town is from a town very near to my home in Hertford, in the UK. 🙂 So there is a little bit of a connection for me, not much, but its enough for me to get myself into gear and visit CT again 🙂

That is cool that you live near our founder. I didn’t know the origin of the name Hartford.

I have never been to Connecticut and this post makes me want to spend a week just exploring the day trips. I would first explore Devil’s Hopyard. A two-mile hike isn’t too bad especially if you get views of a waterfall and bridge. I’ll have to see if it’s pet-friendly too. I’m sure my pup would enjoy this hike as well.

This is a part of the US I’d really like to explore more! I didn’t know that Connecticut had a winery scene but checking out some of them sounds like a lot of fun! Mystic also looks like an interesting little town. I checked out your other post and the drawbridge does look unique with those concrete slabs!

There is also. Harkness park in Waterford Connecticut. it’s a mansion that used to Belong to a rich family. there is Alot to see. it’s surrounded by the ocean. flower gardens . it’s beautiful. Look it up!

Connecticut day trips are a great way to bust the boredom of gloomy winter weather, but if you think you’re limited in options by the snow or cold, don’t worry. We’ve put together our top 6 Connecticut winter activities for non-skiers, to help you get out and explore this winter. These experiences offer some great things to do in Connecticut during the winter, easily reachable from Hartford and even New York City.

Experience the Thrill of the Race

Connecticut may not be known for many world records, but the state has it right where it counts.

Supercharged go kart racing in Connecticut offers the thrill of the race on the world’s largest indoor track . Racers compete on one of two courses, the Coca-Cola or Antonino raceway, taking on the challenge in odorless electric vehicles. If that doesn’t sound like a thrill, never fear, these are no mere golf carts.

Supercharged go karts can travel up to 14 miles per hour, which is quite a racing feat on a winding, challenging course. For beginners, semi-pro heats allow drivers to experience racing while traveling at the lower end of the speed range. For a more advanced ride, experienced drivers can take on a pro heat and feel the full thrill of a wide-open throttle.

Supercharged is located in Montville and also offers an indoor trampoline park, if you are looking for more in Connecticut winter activities. Racers must register and pay an annual $7 licensing fee, which covers the cost of the required head sock to be worn beneath all Supercharged helmets. Single races start at $19.95 with three and five race packages available.

Look under the deals section of the Supercharged website for special offers. It’s one of the more invigorating things to do in Connecticut in the winter.

Diving into the Deep, a Free Things to Do in Connecticut During the Winter

Young woman walks toward the USS Nautilus on a Connecticut winter activity at the Submarine Force Museum

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live on a submarine, or even if you haven’t but have a healthy respect for history, wander over to Submarine Force Museum and Library . This Connecticut day trip is only about 20 minutes away from Supercharged, so it makes a great addition to your visit there.

Within the Submarine Force Museum, you’ll find several interactive displays, including two working periscopes that allow you to see what it’s like to peer above the surface of the water from deep within the ocean. A submarine control center is also available for guests to touch and learn from.

Also within the museum, is a replica of a submarine, detailing each section of the vessel and what life was like inside. It’s a great primer for the featured highlight of the museum, the USS Nautilus.

View of the USS Nautilus from the entry platform.

Launched in 1954, the Nautilus was the sixth ship in the U.S. fleet to bear the name but became the first commissioned nuclear-powered ship in the navy. Nautilus traveled over half a million miles before she was decommissioned on May 20, 1980.

Nautilus now rests at the Submarine Force Museum, giving visitors a glimpse into life beneath the water’s surface. You’ll travel the narrow hallways and stairwells throughout the ship to view living quarters, as well as operational and recreational areas.

The Submarine Force Museum and Library is located in Groton and makes an educational Connecticut winter activity, while providing a once in a lifetime experience. Admission is free, and guided tours are available.

In addition to the museum, the onsite library also holds 5,000 volumes of work related to submarines and submarine history. If you ever had a question about this area of naval genre, you’re sure to find the answer here.

Experience this Connecticut Winter Activity Before the Opportunity Is Gone

Bowling shoes in front of a duckpin bowling alley , a Connecticut winter activity.

Duckpin Bowling has been an after-Christmas tradition in our family for several years now. We descend upon Ducks on the Avenue in West Hartford , in increasingly growing numbers, as sons-in-law join our cloistered ranks.

Duckpin Bowling is a unique New England experience, making it an unforgettable day trip in Connecticut.

What’s so different about duckpin bowling, you ask? Well, the size of the ball for one thing. Duckpin bowling balls fit into the palm of your hand. There are no finger holes either, making it a little more challenging to get just the right hold.

Duckpin bowling balls

The pins are pint-sized in duckpin bowling as well, requiring greater precision to knock them down. Strikes are rare in duckpin, so scores are lower than regular bowling, but it’s an experience you won’t soon forget, and one that holds historical significance.

Some say that the roots sprang from a Baltimore gaming hall owned by baseball greats John McGraw and Robert Wilson. However, more recent evidence suggests that the game was being played near Lowell, Massachusetts as early as the 1890s.

Duckpin bowling has always been an East Coast sport, where kingpin centers once flourished in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maryland. Names like Wolfie Wolfensberger and Toots Barger drew SRO weekend crowds when they played, but duck pin today is a dying sport.

Outdated machinery and few spare parts make duckpin a day trip whose days are numbered. To experience this New England tradition before its gone, find a center near you and head out today.

Visit a One-of-a-Kind Dinosaur

Dinosaur skeleton on view at the Peabody Museum, a great Connecticut winter activity.

The Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University may just be the only place to house 4.5 billion years of the earth’s history under one roof. It’s also the only place where you’re likely to see the skeletal remains of a Brontosaurus-Apatosaurus hybrid .

Changing nomenclature once resulted in Apatosaurus being classified as the same creature as Brontosaurus, so the Peabody wasn’t really wrong in putting the head of the former on the body of the latter. Once it was discovered that the two reptilian giants were indeed different creatures, it was too late to dismantle the six-and-a-half-ton giant, so the oddity remains.

In addition to mismatched reptiles, you’ll also experience a rare illustrative look into the evolutionary history of the dinosaur as it was believed to have happened in 1947. The 110-foot long mural was created by Pulitzer Prize winning Rudolph F. Zallinger and features a few oddities of its own.

Skeletal remains of a giant sloth at Peabody Museum, a great thing to do in Connecticut in the winter

In addition to reptilian history and the earth’s evolution, you’ll experience the tremendous mammalian creatures that predate current species, including a giant sloth and full skeletal remains of homo erectus. Also, make sure to spend some time with the museum’s mineral collection, a new addition that showcases several rare and amazing specimens.

The Peabody Museum is open Monday through Friday 10 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5. Admission is $10 per person with senior rates available. Discounted and free admission offers are available on the museum’s website.

You Don’t Have to Ski to Enjoy This Connecticut Winter Activity

While Connecticut winter weather makes it a great time for indoor pursuits, there is one Connecticut day trip that can take you outside, and no, you don’t need to don a pair of skis or grab a sled to enjoy it.

Backyard Adventures is located on several hundred private acres of land and offers ATV tours through the Litchfield hills. While tours begin at a driving range, suggesting an inauspicious start for this day trip, things rev up rather quickly once you’re strapped into your Can Am Commander side-by-side.

UTVs driving through water, an unusual adventure in Connecticut

Setting off at a brisk pace, you’ll cover dirt roads, wooded leafy undercover, sand, water, and a few challenging surprises. On certain ATV tours , you can even reach an overlook, offering a spectacular view of the Litchfield landscape coated in winter glory.

To reserve your spot on this Connecticut day trip, you’ll need to phone 860-866-6104 or Email al**************@ms*.com .  Backyard Adventures is located in East Canaan and offers one of the more unique outdoor things to do in Connecticut in the winter.

Challenging Yourself at It Adventure

It is a strange name for this day trip experience, but the location only makes it more unique. Deep inside the Jordans Furniture showroom in New Haven is the world’s largest indoor ropes course. Thrilling mid-air fun and another Connecticut record breaker make this experience one you have to see for yourself.

Jordans Furniture calls It Adventure Indoor Ropes Course a state-of-the-art facility, and when you clip your carabiner into the overhead track system, you’ll be inclined to agree.

While traditional adventure courses require you to unclip your safety harness from the line at each event and reclip to a new one, It utilizes a revolutionary system. Once you’re connected, you’ll be able to experience the many thrills of the course without worrying about clipping and unclipping. At It Adventure, you’re securely fastened into the overhead track at all times, allowing your own personal safety system to travel seamlessly with you.

The It adventure course includes catwalks, angled rope ladders, zigzag swinging beams, cargo nets, bridges and more on four levels. Four zip lines at various heights round out the ropes course, including the final leg that travels directly over the regular dancing water feature.

Exiting the course is probably the biggest thrill of all, and possibly the greatest challenge. You’ll jump from one of It’s 56-foot high elevated platforms. While taking the initial step off is a challenging maneuver for many, you’ll be safely and gently belayed to the ground by the It ropes course system.

Several climbing experiences can also be purchased for the three separate rock walls.

While It’s rope course is designed for individuals over 48 inches tall, younger and shorter youth can experience the thrill at Little It, and abbreviated version of the standard course located in the same area as the main attraction.

Connecticut Winter: What to Expect

So, how bad is winter in Connecticut?

Expect cold! Connecticut’s wintertime temperatures have an average high of only 36° from December to February, with an average of about 26 inches of precipitation. If you like snowy holidays, you might just find them in the Nutmeg State!

The gold standard for how to dress for Connecticut winter weather is in layers. You can always take off a layer or two if you don’t need it, but no one wants to freeze their butts off while waiting in line on a cold Connecticut winter day.

If you’re worried about winter road conditions, check the CT Roads site for up to date info on what to expect. Be cautious and give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going. You will want to be sure the vehicle you’re driving has proper tread on the tires – it is important, safety first!

All in all, there are worst places for weather than Connecticut in the winter! Just do a little prepping and planning and you’ll be fine.

Submarine Force Museum , Groton

The Submarine Force Museum (One Crystal Lake Road, Groton) is a unique place to visit in the winter as it is home to the USS Nautilus.

At the museum, which the US Navy runs, you will find 33,000 artifacts, 20,000 documents, 30,000 photographs, and more to learn about submarines.

Mystic Seaport Museum

The Mystic Seaport Museum (75 Greenmanville Ave) is the largest maritime museum in the world, and it is a fun place to go in Mystic, CT in winter.

The highlight of the museum is the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest commercial ship in the country and the last wooden whaleship in the world.

You will see other historic vessels at the museum, and there is a recreation of an old seaside village called Seaport Village.

Inside the museum is a Mystic River city model showing what the town looked like in the mid-19th century.

Make sure you get your all-day admission ticket to the museum in advance.

Downtown Cabaret Theater , Bridgeport

One of the fun things to do in Connecticut in winter is catching a show at the Downtown Cabaret Theater (263 Golden Hill St., Bridgeport).

They have many different types of shows that play on their main stage, including concerts, musicals, holiday specials, and other theater performances.

There are also shows for families at the Theater for Young Audiences, with performances of classic children’s tales and holiday specials.

Ice Climbing , Various Locations

Ascent Climbing is a company in Connecticut that will take you out into your local natural area and teach you how to ice climb.

Every winter, they offer guided ice climbing all over the state, where you can learn to ice climb safely.

Some climbing locations in Connecticut work best to learn how to climb, and they choose one that is most convenient for you.

They also provide all the technical equipment you need, included in the cost of your class.

Connecticut Weather in Winter

Connecticut gets pretty cold in the winter, but not so cold that you cannot spend time outside enjoying it and all the fun places on this list.

Average temperatures in winter are between 32°F to 47°F during the day, with the temperatures dropping to as low as 1°F in the coldest month of January.

In Connecticut, there is an average snowfall of 37 inches every year, which is more than the average in the US.

Dressing up in warm layers is important especially if you’re exploring the outdoors.

Must-Visit Connecticut Winter Getaways

connecticut winter

While falling temperatures lure many people into dreaming of a tropical beach vacation, traditional warm-weather getaways still have a lot to offer visitors in the off-season. During this time of year, you can find reduced rates at premier hotels and less crowds at tourist sites.

There may be no better off-season destination in the Northeast than the Connecticut coast, which combines history, picture-perfect scenery and top attractions. Here are three of the top Connecticut towns to explore this winter.

Old Saybrook

Located where the Connecticut River meets the Long Island Sound, Old Saybrook is one of the state’s oldest towns, having been incorporated in 1854. That history is on full display with numerous museums and parks celebrating the town’s past.

Fort Saybrook Monument Park is a 17-acre park complete with storyboards that detail the history of the Saybrook Colony, which was founded in 1635. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s panoramic views of the Connecticut River.

The General William Hart House , built in 1767, was once the home of the Revolution-era political and military figure. The property is now listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Visitors can tour the property, including its award-winning historical garden.

Aside from its historical sites, Old Saybrook also has a thriving cultural scene. One notable former resident is actress Katharine Hepburn, who moved to the town as a child. Old Saybrook has honored the Academy Award winner by renaming its cultural arts center after her. Known as The Kate , the center is located in a historic theater that was also formerly the town hall. It presents a full repertoire of cultural and performing arts programming for all ages.

When you get hungry, visit one of Old Saybrook’s delectable seafood restaurants like Fresh Salt and afterward head to the 30 Mile Brewing Company . The brewery is all about variety, serving everything from stouts and double IPAs, to saisons and sours, meaning it has something for everyone.

connecticut in winter

No Connecticut winter getaway is complete without a visit to the quintessential New England town of Mystic . Nestled along both sides of the Mystic River, the town is one of Connecticut’s premier vacation destinations. It is best known as home of two of the area’s most-visited attractions: the Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium.

Founded in 1929, the Mystic Seaport Museum is the country’s leading maritime museum. It is the home of four National Historic Landmark vessels, including the Charles W. Morgan , which holds the distinction of being the last wooden whaleship in the world.

The museum’s maritime gallery is the nation’s foremost art gallery specializing in contemporary marine art and ship models. The Mystic Seaport Museum also holds special events, workshops and classes suitable for people of all ages throughout the year.

Mystic Aquarium ’s indoor and outdoor exhibits allow visitors to get up close and personal with thousands of creatures including African penguins, rescued seals and New England’s only beluga whales. Make sure to catch the complimentary sea lion show to see these fascinating animals in action. The aquarium has numerous exhibits and events going on year-round.

But Mystic is much more than just these two unique locations. Need some retail therapy after all that exploring? Olde Mistick Village is home to more than 30 unique shops selling everything from Christmas ornaments to Tibet Himalayan handmade crafts to fudge, candy and specialty foods.

Olde Mistick is also the perfect place to grab a meal as it’s home to some of Mystic’s finest restaurants including Jealous Monk and Pink Basil . Afterward, head to the Village’s multi-theatre arts and movie cinema to complete your night out on the town.

Nestled along the center of Connecticut’s coastline is the town of East Lyme . It is a popular summer destination with its long stretch of public beaches, but is just as enticing during a Connecticut winter.

Much like other towns in the area, East Lyme boasts an impressive history, no better exemplified than by the Thomas Lee House and Little Boston School . Constructed circa 1660, the Thomas Lee House is Connecticut’s oldest wood-frame house. In 1914 the house was sold to the East Lyme Historical Society, which continues to offer tours of the estate.

The Little Boston School House was built on the Lee family property in 1805 after then-owner Elisha Lee deeded land to have the building erected. The school was restored to its early-20 th -century appearance and opened to the public in 1973.

More history is on display at the Samuel Smith Farmstead . Built in 1685, the building represents a perfect example of a Colonial-era, gambrel-roof house. Free tours are available of the property, which also includes a barn and farm.

Speaking of barns, no visit to East Lyme is complete without a stop at the Book Barn . This hidden gem has a collection of more than 500,000 books spread out between four locations, all within one mile of each other.

CT Winter Getaways: Top 10 Most Scenic & Remarkable

cardinal singing in the winter at one of the best places to visit in ct during winter vacation getaways

Sure, CT beaches aren’t swimmable, and you may need to bundle up to go out, but winter travel has distinct benefits.

First, there are fewer tourists wherever you go, which is ideal for introverts or for those traveling during a pandemic.

Second, fewer winter travelers mean hotels and inns offer lower rates than during their peak season.

Often, the difference between planning CT fall getaways and Connecticut winter getaways just a few weeks later can be up to 50% off.

Cute places to Visit In Connecticut In the Winter

Start planning before you pack your parka!

Many of the cutest towns in Connecticut offer great reasons to visit in the winter.

Below are a few of our top picks, curated according to what Connecticut winter activities are available at each location.

Any of these places to visit in Connecticut in the winter make ideal winter getaways.

winter getaways Connecticut map CT Winter Getaways: Top 10 Most Scenic & Remarkable

The closest town in Connecticut to New York City is our town: Greenwich, Connecticut.

Getting here is a breeze. Hop on a northbound train trip from Grand Central Station to New Haven or Stamford. If you’re driving, follow directions to Greenwich, CT , while driving north along the Hutchinson Parkway or Interstate 95.

Once you’re here, there’s more than enough to entertain you for a long romantic weekend winter getaway .

Top Indoor Winter Activities In Greenwich

Are you planning on spending as much time indoors as possible? Then there are plenty of options within walking distance of our downtown Greenwich inn, Stanton House Inn.

wine fireplace best places to visit in ct winter vacation getaways CT Winter Getaways: Top 10 Most Scenic & Remarkable

Here are some great winter activities to do in Connecticut for couples:

  • Shopping in the downtown Greenwich Avenue district is always a unique Connecticut attraction . And that rule applies any time of the year.
  • The rotating exhibits at museums in Greenwich are a perfect way to spend an afternoon.
  • High afternoon tea service seems to make more sense in the winter months. And there are two options in Greenwich: Cady’s Tea Room in Stanton House Inn’s dining room or The Drawing Room in the nearby Cos Cob neighborhood .
  • Finish the day or enjoy a mid-day meal by a fireplace at one of the top downtown Greenwich restaurants , such as The Ginger Man or L’Escale Restaurant .
  • A short distance from Greenwich is the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk to stay warm and learn more about the Long Island Sound sea life.

Best Places to Visit In Greenwich, CT, During the Winter Months

A biting wind should not deter you from enjoying the great outdoors on your Connecticut winter vacation!

Strap on your boots (in case it’s muddy or slippery, depending on the period of the winter) and hit up some of the best hiking trails near Greenwich, CT . A personal favorite in the winter is Mianus River State Park. Its varied terrain, views of the Mianus River, and cool farmstead ruins make for many a great winter picture opportunity. There’s a reason why this is one of the best state parks in all of Connecticut .

Another ideal place to get a great winter photo for Instagram is Greenwich Point Park . While this best of the beaches near Greenwich, Connecticut , is lovely to walk along in the winter, the best part is the southwestern corner. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline on the far horizon.

A little farther into the state but still close enough to be a Connecticut day trip from Greenwich are two major historical attractions. Both are emblematic of the artistic and architectural influence of famous Connecticut residents:

  • Philip Johnson Glass House , in the town of New Canaan, CT
  • Weir Farm is a main attraction on the list of Ridgefield, CT, activities

And, let’s face it, another benefit of Greenwich is how close it is to New York. So you can enjoy a little winter tranquility when you want, and take a day trip to explore the many winter activities in New York City when so inclined.

Best Winter Festival to Attend In Greenwich

As winter festivals go, the biggest in Greenwich is the Reindeer Festival . In a typical year, this event stretches through December. The festivities start with a parade down Greenwich Avenue with Santa and his reindeer.

The reindeer alone are a great excuse to make Greenwich one of your planned winter getaways from NYC this December.

Where to Stay For Your Greenwich, CT, Winter Getaway

Of the 4   Greenwich, CT, hotels , only one bed and breakfast remains in town: Stanton House Inn.

Start a quaint holiday tradition by booking one of our New England inn guest rooms with a fireplace in-room . It’s a unique way to enjoy the evenings of your romantic winter getaways in New England . You could also reserve one of our king bedroom suites with a large bathtub to enjoy your own private spa day, complete with bed and breakfast spa services .

Be sure to check out our romance package to build your unique Connecticut Valentine’s day packages too. We also offer a couples in-room massage package , to add to a bit of luxury to your winter getaway.

You can also keep looking for more things to do in Greenwich, CT, in the winter to add to your itinerary when you read our guide!

Heading Further Into the State to Find More Places to Visit In CT During the Winter Months

While Greenwich is the first stop when traveling from NYC, there are plenty of other places to visit.

Directions for every other point on this list will be from Greenwich. That way, you can use it as a starting point to explore more day trips in CT for couples during your winter getaway.

With its cute downtown perched on the Saugatuck River and gorgeous waterfront, the town of Westport, CT is worth a day trip to explore.

The train from Greenwich to Westport is typically a 45-minute ride. Driving often takes about 30 minutes via the Merritt parkway or I-95.

Places to Visit In Westport, CT, In the Winter

Head to Westport on a Saturday morning to visit the Westport Farmers Market hosted indoors on Saturdays all winter. It’s an excellent way to start your visit, and your fresh produce won’t go bad sitting in a cold car on a winter day if you have other stops to make!

Have lunch at Terrain , a whimsically decorated restaurant and garden shop hybrid. Afterward, visit the MOCA Westport for their rotating art exhibition.

If the sun hasn’t yet set by the time you’ve finished at the MOCA, meander to Sherwood Island State Park to watch the sunset over Long Island Sound.

Drive right past Bridgeport, Connecticut to get to the next spot on our list.

Most equate New Haven with two very different things: the elite and prestigious Yale University and severe urban poverty.

The city has been working to change its image, even offering cash payments to young urban professionals willing to move here.

Yet, this place of extremes offers plenty to curious visitors. In many ways, it’s a smaller and much more manageable version of New York City with a great food and arts scene.

How to Get to New Haven On a Connecticut Winter Vacation

shoreline best places to visit in ct winter vacation getaways CT Winter Getaways: Top 10 Most Scenic & Remarkable

New Haven is a straight shot from Greenwich—just drive an hour up the Connecticut shoreline on I-95. The Merritt Parkway is often a more pleasant drive, provided there are no accidents along the way, slowing traffic.

It’s also about an hour-and-a-half train ride from Greenwich. Take a train to Stamford, CT, then switch to an express train from there to New Haven if possible.

Ideal Places to Visit In Connecticut In the Winter: New Haven Edition

Many of my personal favorite things to do in New Haven, CT , are not unique to the season. That said, they’re still ideal for romantic weekend getaways.

Get to New Haven early enough in the morning to visit a museum before lunch. Yale University hosts several spectacular collections. A personal favorite is the Yale University Art Gallery, one of the oldest and broadest collections in North America.

Afterward, get ready for lunch. You could head to Louis’s Lunch , the restaurant that first developed the hamburger in 1895 and is still in operation, depending on the day.

Instead, head to Wooster Square, the old Italian neighborhood of New Haven, separated from downtown by I-91.

There, you can indulge in cold weather Italian-American comfort food: pizza. New Haven restaurants regularly receive awards for their creative or simply delicious pizza. Of them, Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana has been setting a standard for its coal-fired pizzas since 1925. While they’ve opened franchises elsewhere, New Haven was the flagship restaurant.

Once you’ve filled up on cheesy goodness, the afternoon should have warmed-up a bit. It’s a perfect time to head out for a walk.

You can continue to explore Wooster Square or downtown New Haven. Or you can drive through the high-end East Rock neighborhood to East Rock Park for a sweeping view of New Haven. Alternatively, you can get another walk along the waterfront of New Haven’s harbor at Lighthouse Point Park .

Winter Festivals In New Haven

If our New Haven winter getaway itinerary isn’t enough, plan to head to New Haven on December 1 for the New Haven Holiday Tree Lighting in the Town Green.

Or head back to Lighthouse Point Park for the annual Fantasy of Lights, one of the most popular Christmas lights displays in CT .

Quaint, genteel Madison primly reclines on the Long Island Sound, only 20 miles from New Haven. It’s only another 25-minute drive downtown New Haven or a 30-minute train ride.

So that’s a 3-hour train ride from Greenwich, through New Haven or a 1-hour-and-15-minute drive.

Best Places to Visit In Connecticut In the Winter: Madison Edition

Head to Madison’s downtown shopping district as soon as you arrive on a winter’s day. Spend some time perusing the most interesting local shops, including R.J. Julia Booksellers and the Audubon Shop .

Then, walk the beach at the expansive Hammonasset Beach State Park in the afternoon. Afterward, have a drink and watch the sunset on the deck at the Madison Beach Hotel .

Where to Stay For Your Overnight Madison, CT, Winter Getaway

Does your itinerary of the best things to do in Madison, CT , sound like more than you can complete in just a day trip?

Stay over in Greenwich or Madison, or you can check out some of the other nearby towns like Guilford and Branford .

The local Guardiano family has been taking care of guests at their gracious 10-room bed and breakfast for over 30 years. The Homestead offers an intimate introduction to Madison and its stretch of the Connecticut shoreline.

winter bridge in one of the best places to visit in CT during winter vacation getaways

Want to feel like you’ve wandered onto the set of It’s a Wonderful Life ?

Then be sure to add Litchfield to your list of places to visit in Connecticut this winter.

Litchfield County is one of the quaintest corners of Connecticut, and Litchfield feels like the center of it all.

The drive from Greenwich to Litchfield is about an hour and a half. Along it, you’ll get the pleasure of some highways and backroads with gorgeous views of the surrounding winter scenery.

And once you’re there, there’s plenty to keep you busy during your Connecticut winter getaway.

Litchfield, Connecticut, Winter Vacation Activities

If you’re looking to stay inside, explore the area’s great antique shops like Housatonic Trading Company . Afterward, enjoy a favorite Connecticut winery by visiting Hopkins Vineyard near Lake Waramaug.

But outdoor activities are a major draw to Litchfield and the surrounding Litchfield Hills in the winter. Try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing through the 4,000 acres of the White Memorial Foundation . Downhill skiers or snowboarders can get their fill at either :

  • Mohawk Mountain , a top pick for the best ski resorts near New York City
  • Or Ski Sundown

In Cornwall or New Hartford, respectively.

There are plenty more winter hiking trails to choose from at Macedonia Brook State Park . Or you can simply enjoy the winter scenery along Lake Waramaug with an 8-mile walk along the lakefront.

Winter Festivals Near Litchfield, Connecticut

There’s no question:

A trip to Bethlehem for the Christmas Town Festival is the most Christmas-y celebration imaginable in the state.

This holiday season festival is also one of the most family-friendly winter activities on this list. A typical year includes activities like:

  • Face painting
  • A ride on the Christmas Town Train
  • And even craft and food vendors

The Christmas Town Festival runs the first weekend of December.

As the name implies, the town of Middletown, CT , is as central to the state of Connecticut as you can get.

It takes about an hour and a half to get from Greenwich to this Connecticut River town.

Places to Visit in Middletown, Connecticut, During Your Winter Vacation

From this town’s central location, you can explore a sizable chunk of the Connecticut River Valley.

couple skiing at one of the best places to visit in CT during winter vacation getaways

Head to the nearby New Britain Museum of American Art or the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford if you’d like to soak-up some fine art during your visit.

Alternatively, explore our full list of attractions, activities, and things to do in Hartford during the winter.

Some of our favorite winter activities in Connecticut are just a short drive from Middletown. Powder Ridge Mountain is the place for:

  • Snowboarding
  • Snow biking
  • Even night skiing

Head east from Middletown to Allegra Farm to schedule your very own horse-drawn sleigh ride through the winter fields.

And next, does getting a better view of the local winter wildlife sound appealing?
